"Were thirteen almost nine and they time to and what's really wonderful questions as I was leaving the farm everybody, there was getting ready to have lunch. They had all been working on the farm getting ready for our feed two birds harvest, and they were taking break for lunch, and then they were going to go back and finish the heartless the morning. Dearie just described sounded very similar to the Tuesday I was there. Sunshine fresh air, people gathering together finding, company routine, and purpose. As she and I continued our conversation deary shared with me her background growing up in Baltimore being aware of. And economic disparity while still very young. Going off to study at Berkeley for her college years. In time I asked her what had originally brought her to work at the homeless garden project and what kept her there. You just feeling you know something was horribly wrong that you know here we are the wealthiest country in the world and the way that we've set things up. Creates a situation where a lot of people don't have a place to live and and I've been thinking a lot about the idea of home and really thinking that home has been kind of one of the central themes of my life. And I. So value home in the idea of home and my actual home. my home community on the connection to the land dairy shared with me a transformational moment while studying at Berkeley. I had the most wonderful mentor Dr Paul licked. And at one point he told me something that I. Really feel. So strongly that everyone should have someone in their life who tells them this at some time he told me you know you can do whatever you want. So my goal was to continue doing research, but I sort of took a different path and had a sudden and when I had my son I realized that I did not want to do research anymore that I really wanted to do something that was going to more directly give back to people and make an impact on people in nineteen ninety one I was doing an internship at the Resource Center for nonviolence. And I heard about the homeless garden project. I had already found the writing of myles. Horton he wrote a book called unearthing seeds of fire. In, he talked about the role of people in making social change. When they are not themselves experiencing a social problem. His idea was the most powerful way that someone can be involved. Is, to. Bring people together who are experiencing a social problem and have them come up with their own solutions. So. I was kind of looking for a way that internship for how to how to realize that vision. And I heard about the homeless garden project and I felt. That it was everything I was looking for. Dairy started at the Homeless Garden Project as a volunteer and took on the writing and producing a newsletter about the project interviewing the participants who were experiencing homelessness and sharing their voices and stories with the larger community. One person really wanted to get involved then he wrote this. Amazing. Essay. He was just an incredible writer. His name was bill. Tracy. And he wrote a piece called a day in the life of the Homeless Garden Project. He was a Vietnam Vet Just a natural leader, a very big personality, the newsletter and personal story work showed dairy, the power of relationship and listening. I learned how much people love to talk about their story and Almost like. A deep need you know to be heard and to be validated by being heard about your story. I got to hear how much people valued. Having an opportunity contribute in some way to work you know to have. The structure to have a purpose. And I also got to hear sort of some of the stories of how people became homeless. All of them different and here people's dreams about what they wanted to do as they moved out of homelessness. Derry goes on to share how the H. G. P. got started initially. Shortly, before the beginning of the project. Are Amazing co-founder, Paulie. was involved with a group of people starting the first shelter in Santa. Cruz. County. And unbelievably in the nineteen eighties there was no shelter and Santa Cruz County. And some people got together and did a hunger strike and said that they were not gonNA. Eat again until the county built a shelter. Paulie group. Of Ministers. Who called themselves the Citizens Committee for the homeless They banded together and. Found a place of the old family, Stalinist shop and Santa Cruz County. And Krit together a shelter and they would go down and spend the night with the people living in the shelter. Now Paul had a history of starting. Being involved in the startup of amazing things. He himself is philosopher and theologian and a gardener. He has the most beautiful garden. he's a writer. He has a great appreciation for herbs and. He helped start the garden of the university. And brought Allan Chadwick to the university for the initial farming garden? So. Picture this man starting the shelter and then spending the night in the shelter. and he said the story I've been told that you know when he woke up. In the morning. There was just this raw energy like being on the streets of New York. And he wondered how can anybody ever dreamed of anything.

"King counties order to close community gatherings Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canadian borders will be closed to any travelers exempting travelers from the US stocks dropped by eight percent on Wall Street today triggering a temporary halt in trading for the second time in the last week here's CBS news wire Jiang with more this is absolutely crushing for the economy there is no other way to put it and it's exactly what president trump did not want and did not expect because as you mentioned the fed cut its benchmark rate yesterday by a full percentage point to now the range of zero to a quarter percent president trump addressed the nation earlier to warn that the virus that may persist until August CBS news bill Tracy has details on that a more somber president trump said the corona virus could last through July or August and cause a recession we've made the decision to further tougher the guidelines on blood the infections now we'd much rather be ahead of the curve then behind it a Seattle police department closed their headquarters and facilities to the public so lots of coronavirus news today and I understand that there is some coronavirus news in where you are reporting from Jack you wanna fill us in on that yeah so we've just been given a shelter in place order here in California at about six counties are affected by that and that San Francisco Alameda Contra Costa and Santa Cruz County so all nonessential personnel are being asked to stay home I luckily enough am essential personnel because I'm a radio guy so I get to go to work but the the weird thing about all of this Miley is as how quickly people just say O. okay all right yeah I know I guess I just won't go to work now it seems like everyone just kind of falls into place with it I understand why people do it and I understand the reasoning behind it you don't want to impact the hospitals and things like that but the it's just it's interesting thing to observe watching people just say okay yeah I guess I won't leave my house for three weeks I guess I'll just stay in for three weeks wow so how do you know what I mean when was this announcement will start with that about three hours ago yeah have you had time to talk with with other people of whether their friends are just people in the community about how that is impacting specific situations well it was so abrupt that most people are confused because the language is very confusing it says that you know you can't leave your house and then in the next sentence in this quarter that was released it says you can go on walks and you can walk your dog and you can exercise and you can exercise as long as you're six feet away from somebody else so this kind of a lot of contradictory orders being given where it says we can go to the grocery store and you can go to doctors appointments but restaurants are closed and please don't leave your house it's all it's all very new for us so it is a little confusing did they give a timeline for when this might change I mean I know that's hard to say no they say in anything that goes into effect at midnight tonight and then it will be lifted supposedly on the seventh of April but they did leave a little amendment in there that said well we can change that if we deem fit on the seventh it's three weeks eight it does beg the question how officials are arriving at these these time lines eight it seems like most of it is based on on science and how people are expected to be recovering from the virus if they are contagious and once once it is contained how I how to move on from there like it once you have testing and you know how many people could be infecting others at what point would it be safe to sort of release people back into to have more of those variables but that's that's pretty extreme that's that's something that you know who's who knows if Seattle is going to be saying that that soon we we've had some more some more updates today locally which have a global impact the first human test on a possible vaccine for the virus took place today in Seattle and for people receive the vaccine I have a local reporter Kyra seventies Deborah Horne spoke with Jennifer holler one of those people last night I saw the AP reports that the first human was was getting the vaccination in the morning and I thought home I think that's me and at eight AM Jennifer Heller made history in the fight to save the world from the deadly coronavirus how you feeling I'm feeling great I'm feeling great the actual vaccination itself felt much like a flu shot didn't hurt much very easy I feel great and also entering a new week of closures throughout the state today's day one word school is out for a few weeks here until April twenty fourth allegedly that could change we'll see our students are having to adjust to unexpected time off high school students Spencer to recess as it was depressing it was kind of depressing at first not gonna lie because schools shutting down will be able to my friend's friend Dale teacher Karen to Shera says it's sad it makes me sad because you know usually with our communities you don't really close and we really enjoy spending time together and so it's really sad to see Washington state superintendent Chris right doll was not optimistic about how long schools might be closed I think we should be prepared for this to last all the way through the string and maybe not a return to school until the fall that is not in the model right now but I'm not the whole text but I'm taking my cues from them you just sound energy won't disconnect gas electric a service during coronavirus crisis the company is saying and more updates into Qantas P. wallop into les love tribes are shutting down casinos to contains front of coronavirus with more casino closures expected and then this is this is another one do you hitting a lot of coffee drinkers Starbucks is shutting down all of their cafe seating areas and stores with drive thru windows with exclusivity to the drive through our seventieth spoke to customers at a downtown Starbucks store who were on board with the company's move we all want.

"Eight seven two three seven seven six. We might need your help on this call is 'cause we got to come up with a way to make. I don't want to say it this way. But we gotta make the all star weekend. Great again. And it's a it's a it's a decent event. It's a lot of fun to to watch from afar in all of my broken this when the NBA ages travels from city to city and just puts all the NBA is in your face with all the the celebrity and all the fanfare, and you know, icons of the game and legends of the game. They keep the history intact. You see Bill? Russell you. See a lotta peop- Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and you see the future of the game as well with the rising stars. So I think the NBA does a great job and packaging it but Taylor Rachel. We gotta do something to spice some of these events up because the hierarchy hierarchies changed the level of importance has changed and kids lives. I remember a day. I remember back in my day. Here we go. Lawn. When when the when the dunk contest was the premier event, and now it is kind of on the same level as the skills contest to be honest with you. And of course, we can get into how we can improve the game. But Rachel let's start with you. What would you do to spice up or improve all star weekend, especially this weekend in Charlotte two thousand nineteen? All right. This is what I would do back in the day. I remember when it was great to the dunk contest. It was something. You look forward to you know, like, I don't know. Like it was the game itself. Look forward to that more than just the game. So I think what was so great about it is that you had recognizable players in the actual contest. We today we see all the players on the sidelines. You know, it's just more about like what they're wearing their reaction to whatever the contest is rather than them actually being in it. I think if we go back to that it would be way more exciting to watch. You know, when when people have to say who is that imagined tonight's slam dunk contests. Jones. Lebron james. And two other players. No, my point is though like we all, but we all we all love the slam dunk contest. When we were kids. Why was Michael Jordan was Dominic Riggins? It was Vince Carter was Spud Webb. It was all your name. And I'm not listen. It's fact not opinion, we're not taking away from any of the contestants shine over the past couple of years. But the reality is the star factor is why that was the all star game. And actually not the game. The problem with all star games in general is which all star games, actually matter. I mean, golf, which all star games. Do you watch and say this is a legit all-star game. Well, I think baseball and basketball, the only ones they can really do as far as the simulation of the actual game without guys getting hurt. And guys actually performing is some of these skillful feats that we see football is pretty much the guys who are in the Super Bowl and the guys who aren't hurt C getting fourth or fifth or six alternate, guys hockey. I mean, they've done a lot of different things at the three on three stuff and trying different. Different reasons for you to tune in. But they've got marketing issues as is baseball and basketball. I think tried to do it as close to what the game is possible. The problem is I I used to love the game. The game was exciting to me the game when close in the fourth quarter guys actually kind of get a little bit competitive fire competitive spirit. And I think the last time we saw that was all three was Jordan's last game. And and Iverson and Marbury con went out in the fourth quarter. And it was a fun game. Because people were defending and people actually were defending Jordan, Shawn. Marion is is all record saying, you know, he wanted to for joins last all-star game for him to go out there and and have a good time. But also be competitive, I think that's where it's kind of lost its luster deduct contest as well. I don't think there's much left you can do without pulling animals and all kinds of cars and. Taraf giraffe. Is not many places you can go and the people that are doing the greatest dunks right now guys that are not in the NBA who on Instagram. So if you want to bring some of the Instagram dunkers and trick shot dudes into the frame really doing that though. It could be it could be gimmicky. But I think it'll be a draw the problem is you won't get LeBron James do this. You won't get the stars to do this. I think is one of the two greatest basketball injustices. We've had in our generation is one LeBron never doing the dunk contest and him never going up against Kobe in the finals when both of them were the eastern Western Conference for all those years. So in the end, it's the star power. I agree with Rachel, and I'm not going to be nice. I don't know who three of the four people are who are Dunkin. Actually, it's an and I am a basketball fan. I covered the game. And I I'm a big fan of the game. I tried to watch the games much Bosley can. But we've got a lot of flooding dudes in the NBA. But for whatever reason those guys because of the the obligation sponsorship wise, what the NBA wants you to do in terms of the fan experience. Guys wanna take that weekend off as much as possible. That's why the three point contest has become. I'm actually more interested in the three point contest. The market it's marquee event. And there's some members up there that Dell Curry might actually be involved tonight. So if he Steph are all involved in one three point contest, it should be fun. But about Monica you saw her make that half court underhanded. Hey, mama curry. She's hey, let me tell you. It is Charlotte, by the way, they she should she should be in there. I'm fine with any any curry is fine. By the way, think about the the responsibility and the onus being offered Kimball Walker shoulders because usually the host city, the host player has to be the guy who shows everybody around lets everybody know where they should be going Kimball walkers free and easy this weekend. Because the entire curry family is. So that's kind of cool. But I don't know what we can do. I don't think you can concrete wise to spruce up the all-star experience. And and that's the thing too. We grew up in a different time in Washington different time. I don't know if if the kids today are like, hey, I kinda like my all star weekend experience. You don't think they do? I really don't think they do. And I think I like what you said about the whole gimmicks and things other outside of bringing in animals what else? Can you do? I disagree. I see I think that if you brought in people we knew or even legends like imagine somebody old school coming into Don somebody hurt though. Yeah. To try to come out and do. No, I can't do it would've been cool to see. Vince. Do it Vincent. Well, actually, Vince may be older than Bill. Tracy McGrady came out. You trying to get somebody trying to hurt. There was an old really big three. There's an old timer all-star game. I think the last one was in like seventy eight seventy nine there were actual ambulances on standby guys will pop hamstring hamstrings left. And right when athletes are done being athletes, you can speak over. Whoa. Will speak to yourself. Out in ten years. I'm just saying. If you go and being a skills competition on a soccer field right now against some of the highly tuned athletes in the world, it'd be an issue. I'm gonna struggle staple. My achilles. Tendon now before the entertained, you would be great because you've ever see the soccer got do it in this. This. Tracy, Tracy McGrady and is big pants now. I'd like to see Tracy McGrady on a soccer field. That'd be interesting too. Because I've never seen a deer out. That's the concept that you bring in people from different sports into the dunk contest. What we're doing? Now, we're getting away from this. This radio original golf, you guys would know this because you're not mass and it's not a slight. But Major League Soccer did something very interesting with their all star game data collection of their league. All stars come together in you play a club around the world, the Real Madrid Barcelona Manchester United's, but that's been going on since I was playing. So now, you're that's a little quote, unquote, stale, if you're going to actually want to try to get people to watch take all your all stars right now, they show up at the court and you draft three v three teams similar to the big three. And you have a tournament knockout round stage right there. Not going. It's not going to make the players play harder. I'm not what you're trying to do. You're trying to make. No, no, no issue with the game that they're not. They're not compelled the all star game is meant for corporate sponsors. And for the league. It's a showcase for corporate sponsor has nothing to do with the players trying harder. Yeah. But the entertainment value of the game not just give you entertainment when I'm just saying. Is going to be there. No matter what though the sponsors, and the ratings are the ratings aren't going to be there. They held at some saying the ratings aren't going to be there. So when I was when we were taking to players off the court isn't gonna make anybody play harder. No, you're creating the entertainment and the drama around the three v. Three teams don't tell me. There was any drama with Janas and LeBron drafting on TNT four I thought I thought the draft was going to be live like with the players like created like a bachelor like a reality show. Like, give me reason to show up. Anybody for being the last pick and all those line AST last year. Had an issue entertaining. What sacrifice though like worried about feelings? Now. Russell Westbrook already got feelings like your feelings in the in the do you think that's going to make the actual weekend better? Or it's going to be entertainment. I think you've got to find a way to get me to watch that all star game. I haven't watched an NBA all star game since Michael Jordan retired. Because there's no for me. I don't need to watch that game. I don't need to watch that game. I want you to watch the NHL star game. I don't need to watch the major league baseball star game until they said that team whoever wins that league you are the home team for the World Series. Correct. When they did that like, that's the only reason I watch and I'm not gonna watch all star game. We'll just see you this conversation. NBA all star Saturday night is on ESPN radio tonight at eight PM eastern tune. It's college basketball action is Kansas battles..

Great. His dead, LeBron James great rate. He is great. So really go around the Brown James that both know dislike something can be good and also be good at, doesn't mean that they're the same. It just means that they're both good what you're saying. But I'm saying, give great is like the best that you can be. If greatest Anderson LeBron is exceptional. How about exceptional means hall of fame for me. Bronze and exceptional NBA player, but didn't you just have a debate episode about how certain people make the hall of fame of not much, yeah, but really out of hall of Famer at this on the say that that's what he's trying to say is that people make the hall of fame even if their resume may not be the greatest because people people know what they did. So like for instance, tracing Grady because he had the injuries his his fool. Shit don't look like a couple of other people, but if you know basketball and you watched and you know how Bill Tracy McGrady is. So they're going to let him because he deserves being because Hannah was undeniable. But because he had the injuries. Some people who get to see my look. It should be like, how did he make it will if you was around, you know, trace ingredients that do. So he got in Saint Hugh GRA here had the injuries, but his time he was Greek freak before Greek freak. The way people slab at the mouth. Greek freak was the same radio, but some people might not know that because they didn't get a chance to see that it wasn't around for that, which is what I like about the NBA because football baseball, it should as a little bit more tighter and Arkansas per. That's what I like. Because some people might get in. But I, I love it because now tracing graded can't give forgotten about because it's something that he had no control of. He has no control over his knees. Same thing with gross, but they'll still get in and be remember forever, which is phenomenal. But that's what we have top ten at position. I have fun doing it. I like the overall list even though it's not my list of thinking still good job. It was a lot more easy to not choke somebody. But I almost did piece. Starlight lounge presents an evening. Progressive box. Oh, what a great honor, Jim, the lights for this next one too much there. It is got to get things just right..
