"Bill Thorne is this Senior vice president of communications and public affairs at the National Retail Federation and joins us now. Good morning, Bell. Good morning, April and Marty, How are you? Good. How different will this shopping season be for retailers? Do you think well, it's going to be different for retailers, and it's certainly going to be different for consumers. This is a time that nobody anticipated and so retailers are doing everything they possibly can to ensure that People have what they want. Get what they need have a great experience and can focus on the celebration this season, which is really all about family and friends. Get the shopping done. Get that stress out of your life. The inventory is there. The prices are great. And so it's just one of those things that you can check off the list and then shop safe. I also wondered, too is getting people out in circulation May If you want to say my word, changed the Malays and maybe offer some enthusiasm and and a little hope for people if they're out in about the prior to the holidays and thinking about doing those things, getting out and shopping and commingling with other people, but doing it safely. Yeah, Doing it safely is the key, but absolutely. There's pent up desire. Look, everybody knows how to shop online. You go to a site. You find the product. You quick, check out and then you walk away, but what they're missing and what we've been hearing from consumers in our research. Is this desire to go into a store and be a part of that purchasing process where they can ask the questions where they can walk the aisles where they can touch and see the products and they want that experience. We've all had that for all of our lives and all of a sudden that was taken away, and now we want it back. But we want to make sure that the consumer knows that they could do that safely. They have a role to play in that, but the retailers air, creating an environment to ensure that that's one less thing that they have to worry about. Yeah, they even offering incense. Tibbs to try to get shoppers in right now ahead of, you know the big Christmas rush. Oh, yeah, the incentives. They're pretty pretty dramatic, primarily because we know that it's just going to be a long holiday season and that it's going to be different because you're not gonna have the numbers of people at the stores in the stores at the same time again, going back to the safety concerns, so The price discounts the deep discounts that you'd normally find on Thanksgiving Day for Black Friday Cyber Monday and the Super Saturday those air all going on right now. "About restrictions due to the pandemic? I was in Arizona for my kiddos fall break and spend about 15 minutes outside of a store waiting to get in, but because of capacity limits had to wait outside. Now that was Arizona and 90 degrees. I'm wondering about Colorado in the wintertime with snow on the ground. Is that going to be a concern? Do you think for retailers that they've got these capacity limits in some states? It is a concern. But again, that's why we're encouraging people to start early. I just don't think that you're going to find those black Friday pictures of the thousands of people storming a story. It's just not going to happen, and so The retailers are going to ensure that they abide by local rules and regulations and what we're hopeful of is that those while abiding by those that it is recognized by the entities that are enforcing And that they recognize these retailers are doing everything they can to keep those consumer safety and the other problem we have. April is that you know, one municipality may do it one way and you go across the street. They're doing an entirely different way because it's in a different county or different townships. So You know, kind of getting the uniforms standards, but we're not. We're going above and beyond. So if if they're asking us to do something, we're doing it. It's retailers because we want to make sure that we can stay open and that consumers have a place to shop. You know, I don't have to tell you this bill, but I know that for many of these smaller retailers this holiday season, maybe a last chance for them one to try to at least Make up for some of the losses the year maybe even to literally survived, But also it could be a catapult to get into 2021. So it actually could be a launching pad for some of these businesses. If they get a nice retail, you know, sales and retail market for the holidays. Yeah, it's incredibly important. You know, Another thing that the small businesses have done the small retailers have done is they've used that time. In the early days of the pandemic, where they couldn't open their stores to really build a robust online presence that they may have not had before. They have the time and they have the certainly the drive to try to get online and in front of those customers that normally shop their stores, and they've been very creative about moving stuff out to the sidewalk and understanding that we're getting in the winter time. That's gonna be more difficult. But you know, to the extent that the The customer can see something online and call that store owner and say I'm very interesting that can you meet me at the curb because that's the way that the retailer wants to operate, meeting the consumer where they want to be where they feel safe, secure, where they pay the price that they want to pay for the product they want to buy. You can imagine online shopping will be gone gangbusters. I'm sure any idea what products and services shoppers air looking for this year and have their needs and desires may be changed because of out crazy 2020 has been, you know, that's a really good question. And, yes, I think that you're going to see some changes for sure. Most of the purchasing that has been done and it's been pretty robust. Retail sales numbers have been incredibly good over the last several months, but What people are buying her things for their house. Their buying D I y. They're buying things to set up virtual classrooms and virtual offices. And so I think that what you're going to find going into Christmas is that people aren't the holidays is that people are going to be looking for things that are a little bit less about that, and a little bit more about just Blurting something that I want to give to somebody else because I love them. I care for them, and I want them to be able to focus on something else than what's going on around us. And that's all what the holiday season is about. Just focusing on family, friends, the community and celebrating in Thanksgiving continued health and safety from the National Retail Federation. Thanks so much, Bill Thorne. We appreciate it. Happy holidays. April, Marty. Thank you. Happy holidays. You get up there and shop. We certainly will. But first we'll take a break on this holiday edition of Colorado's Morning news. "Be a holiday season like we've never had before. National Retail Federation is hoping to help you and also help all those stores out there and all those companies that need to sell things to stay in business and Help the economy recovers, so the National Federation has come up with some plans. We want to find out what they are. Let's talk now with Bill foreign. He's the senior vice president for communications and public affairs for the National Retail Federation. Bill. Thanks for being with us on first light. Michael. Thanks for having so I've read some predictions that consumer spending is actually going to go up. Maybe 1 to 1.5% between November and January. So we know people. I guess I guess they want to spend will be able to spend but you need to help them. Spend it in what way? Well, we launched this campaign. We're calling it the dude traditions campaign. It's encouraging people to stop early in the shop safe and shopping early, just to kind of get through the stress of What people put on themselves as it relates to buying gifts for friends and for love's with loved ones and then stop safe because our retailers are ready to have people in their stores. Stores are safe to shop. The people that work in stores are trained. They know how to keep things safe. So we encourage people to get into the holiday spirit early, and certainly the retailers are if you've been reading lately, the early deals are pretty much the deals that you would find any time. Around the Thanksgiving holidays. So black Friday well every Friday in October, and some stores is black Friday. So the holiday season is in full sway. I was gonna ask about that is black Friday dead because the big retailers seemed to be have abandoned it. You know, it's a really good question. And what we've been seeing Michael over the last several years is the importance of black Friday has diminished now It's still important, I think psychologically because people really see that it's the beginning of the holiday season. There are people that have traditions around black Friday, the family goes together to the store to take advantage of the deals. But in terms of importance the spend is being spread out now, so you've got Thanksgiving Day, But this year, most retailers are staying close. But you would have people shopping on Thanksgiving. Black Friday. Small business Saturday CYBER Monday Super Saturday, so it really began to kind of lose its importance Black Friday as it relates to determining how the season was going to go. It's still important when we talk about black Friday. We're not talking about that day of the week. We're really talking about the deals that they would find on that day traditionally, and so those deals are being offered. Now. Four minutes before the hour on first light. We're talking with Bill Thorne of the National Retail Federation. So you said. You want people to shop safe and shop early. Now I get why you want people to shop safe. But why early? Our eyes? There's some fear that consumers may not know that there may be a little reluctant to go out into the stores. Well, I think the shop early is a people want to get out and shop, so there's no reason not to. But I think that there's also this idea that we don't know what's going to happen. So it's this confluence of the regular seasonal flu with the coronavirus what that's going to mean and cemented municipalities. Some states that really start Restricting access to certain stores or areas. So what we're saying is while it is what it is, and we know what it is, take advantage of that and get the shopping done and just get that stress. Off your shoulders and get ready to be in the spirit of.

"Like that's only response is like to do like something some, not that again, not that what she's saying is even making that big of a blip because she's not that famous joining me. She's not. It's not like it's Chrissy Teagan or like somebody coming out and saying something about the crash. It's someone on a relatively small show who really, ever heard of, again, love the show, love her, but saying a little something. So it's gonna take a lot more for her to get to that level where the crash would even respond. Maybe. I just love. I just love when British people complain about American culture and like various ways like Emma Thompson of Thomson talking about like me too. Yeah. And it's like. You're so much smarter than any of our like icon legend, actresses Meryl. She never British people have their own set of smut that they can attend to like, but it makes ever as an American that what I'm like. Thanks for thanks to your support like saying this better than than our people can. But is there anything else about Jamila. Maybe all maybe all Britain's want is for me to go on a rant about Theresa May or like Brexit. You know, maybe that's all they want. If you're British and you want that, tell me I won't be able to provide, but are Are you you on. going to say, do you have to study up or like maybe Britain's love it when like Jimmy Fallon complaints about Brexit, they're like, oh, that's what we need like a strong American act about Brexit. Americans had a lot to say about Brexit. Like one I'm saying is maybe they loved it. This is getting incomprehensible. So let's move on speaking of Americans on politics, hyper para VO got arrested. Capital this court. I don't really know where it was anyway, but you should know. Good form Bill. So another amazing news story that happened that had no celebrity element. And then like later on the day, just as just like the contagion plane, somebody was like, hey, pirate payroll was there. And suddenly I was like, what? Just kidding? Like I don't care. I don't care. Don't care. Then prepare is mentioned. You're like stop Justice Cavanaugh. No to what it. No, excuse me. It's just having this this business that we are in. It's like you've got up to brains. It's like I have like the brain that cares about all the like shitty stuff going on in our country and our world, and that brain has to be separate from the who brain because when they merged together, then it just doesn't make any sense. Yeah. Like you just doesn't. You can't like you can't like get to the point of anything. If you're too, if you're smoshing together, like Bill Thorne's, latest single or something, and you know the new supreme court Justice hearings like or what the confirmation. Hearings like you just can't smash them yet. That's true. You'll go crazy. So what happens is when they do smush piper parable getting arrested, you're like, what's more important? What does it mean that it's your job? So it's difficult pipe repairable was. The Senate office buildings e earlier this week at the Cavanaugh hearings. And she was one of the many, many protesters. Most of them are women by the way shout at two shutout to are politically active ladies. Do we men or women who went and took it upon themselves to be like, fuck this dude. And she got arrested. So did a lot of people and she tweeted about it and people notice because Peace Watch covert affairs. Open affairs was big people like Cody ugly. Yeah. It was your. Oh, it was piper parable and the women who dressed as the Handmaid's tale eighties who made the real slash at these hearings and they were arrested. And you know, good for piper ball even know what to say about this. It's like. Prepare, Bo, I know doing your civic duty. I didn't go to the supreme court hearings. Yeah. Well, maybe you did piper parable did more is that I feel like there could be a rhyme piper. Parable went to the hill..

"That doesn't mean anything. Again, she just is very busy. She's very, very busy. I mean, anyone who owns a social media company with someone, Josh must be completely without extra time spare time. I mean, there's just crazy. It's like you expect her to have the wind. You expect her to travel. You expect her to have the gold jewellery line. But this one persona. Internet face internet company, Facebook agency, partner apps, Chapas chat bots. A I in a are by Josh, Bo, because I'm reading his Instagram name by. Josh. He also he by this guy named Josh and Christina Milian featured MTV Forbes New York Times and more. So it's like I'm not gonna dive any deeper into this, but I'm just going to have to believe in, say like, wow, a million owns of Facebook agency part. That's what we're talking about right now. The reason we're talking about Christina Miliana's because she can't stop getting robbed. She and her boyfriend. I mean, maybe the person's looking at our Instagram being like this woman better have a lot of money. She has so many companies will. It's funny that you bring up Instagram because that's one of the reasons people are speculating keeps getting robbed because she keeps Instagram whenever she's not home. She has literally a travel Instagram. Yeah. So they're following interim dot com slash more million where you get to see where she travels. I mean, people should learn this longtime ago. KENDALL Jenner, I believe is the one who spoke out about this really loudly she was like or no, it was Kylie don't was like, I don't like host when I'm actually traveling because don't post airplane mode. All of my Instagram's. They're just like drafted up top. And then. When I post them once I'm back home so that no one knows wind. She is places sort of RAV aim wanna one and you're saying she got robbed many times. She got robbed just twice in one week twice in one week though. In one week I very clever robbers slows robbed around the same time to someone else's rob to Bill Thorne. Yes. Run a race rumoured basically do not post when you're on vacation. The race. Summer thing was different because that was an armed robbery. So like people like ran an like with weapons. The other, the other people were robbed, sort of with the intention of going into an empty house. You know, they assume no one was home and they wanted to get in get out Sagan. I think it was a situation where they just knew they knew the belt on wasn't home. They knew that was Khalifa, wasn't home. They gang. I didn't rob a million, but I keep thinking of myself looking at Cristina millions, Instagram being like, wow, I didn't know Christina. Milian had so much going on like I should go rob her like, that's like, that's the journey of the person where it's like, whoa, like she must like there must be a lot of good stuff of that house. She's busy. She's hey, I think she was getting paid. I don't think she was busy, but she's busy. Let's talk about speaking of busy. Let's talk about her boyfriend. So Cora whose real name is Matthew Tota her. Ex-husband is the dream the sauna, Connor slam the dream. They they, I don't know what the deal with the relationship was, but it ended kind of badly, I think. So it wasn't that great of an ending. And now she's dating. This really interesting guy named 'em pa- Cora whose name is just Matt. I think..

"I just think that's kind of gross, but then actually the more I thought about it, having sex with an actual person is probably grocer than having sex with adult that's been cleaned, get right. If you really kind of think that through she won't. Yeah. Yeah. Would you have sex with a with a fancy doll? I don't know. What does she look like? I don't think about that. What would my doll look like it? Is that considered cheating? No, it's a doll. I don't think it's cheating wacky news over the UK. I love how uptight the media is there when it comes to the royals. And just because the queen's very uptight last week, Meghan Markle walked around without pantyhose on which is the Royal. No, I know the Queen does not like female royals to be without invented. I heard she flew coach. I know I read that too. That was wild. When day Megan Markle was wearing a pantsuit which the Queen of not also like, oh female royals to wear pantsuits trash. Meanwhile, in grief, Lindsay Lohan has gone viral. I love it. There was this video of her dancing like an idiot, not even like an idiot. I think she was having fun. I love the moves. I'm obsessed with video. This video has gone viral, and people are recreating it now and let me tell you I time and time again, I just prove it. I am pressed the end. I call things. I said, Lindsay low, hence picking up and it's happening. I don't know if that means her show is going to be a hit, but at least getting attention again, that makes me happy dancing with the stars. She should be on she should, but but you probably won't a couple of more crazy home robberies, Bill Thorne was robbed just days after a failed attempted robbery at her house, Christina. Millions home was robbed twice in the and we. That's insane. Kinna dawn, I know of on. To your favorite thing? The bachelor new bachelor has been Colton Underwood. He can't believe it why? Well, he's actually I can't believe it because day one the first time I saw him I said to Cal and I go, that guy right there is going to be the next bachelor. She's like now it's going to be when I was like, I don't know virgin. This dude's definitely going to be the bachelorette versatile. He's a virgin. Yeah. Blow these like show him Abano Sean, lose a born again, virgin. That's bullshit version never gotten down before. So this is going to be really interesting. I like them again version Burtt. Than a real. I want the chance of something going down in the boom, boom room. I need that to happen. So I, you know, who knows what's going to happen in those sweets? So I don't know. It's going to be fun. I hope I hope he loses his virginity during go. That would be the best. Oh, I can't wait. I like the guy too. So I'm looking forward to it. Meanwhile, your friend LaLa from Vander pump rules got engaged my friend actually, I got invited to engagement party, but I go, did I know I was, I come with, you know it already happened. "Especially great show, and everyone on it is truly coach wanted kind appointed. You didn't do a full path even though really the only other interesting person beside Gina is Justin bell Goni, but he's kind of interesting like like he's a very good person. He has like a video companies just makes like inspirational video, but I used to like thirst fall him on Instagram, and I had to stop because it was it. I was not. I was hard. It was all baby videos. I don't like babies like it's all been miracle Weiss and like he's a huge hippie. And like I swear to God, like I, I was there for every day. His wife's pregnancy just like like, he's just like, I can't believe God lets me watch my wife stomach grow and it's just like he's renting this movie and justify verse stores. It's just seems like restores with Cole sprouse and just like she's such a person. I'm sure he's a great father, but the. Polls, cuts out the call, cuts out like mid rave about people that make sense. Like I like she was like, I can't believe you didn't talk about him. I went down a deep hole and then I had to like crime out of the hole and she's just like, I love him. I wanna marry him. He's he's amazing. Do you know he did a Ted talk Lindsay this year now, what was it about? Tod Ted, talk on masculinity, toxic masculinity now? Okay. I'm done being quote man enough. I've been pretending to be a man that I'm not mine tire life, but I'm tired of performing and I can tell you right now that it is exhausting trying to be man enough for everyone all the time I've found you found the one thing I don't like more than I don't like cruises, which is TED talks ended up in TED talks. This Ted talk is eighteen minutes long, which honestly feels short for a tedtalk doing Ted talk is a red flag. If you're like dealing with someone and they've done a Ted talk, you're like red flag will literally. Red flag red logo to, oh, okay. But do we do? We stand Justin bowl, Tony much right to I don't really care. A lot of people also call them like how dare you call Gina of them. She's not. She's like they were like four people watch this show and like even they might agree with, you know, I think she's of them. I'm not changing that. Okay, fine. I'm just saying, are you called or. I like to, I like to take feedback. Them in terms of like like celebrity in our celebrity world, like she's part of like tabloids no matter how many people watch show. It's like she's somebody that people like to to deal with and talk about and look at and hear about. And I want to truly do believe like my mom knows Gina Rodriguez. You should call an Askar. She's on vacation. Okay. Well, when she's back. Hi, I'm his on Twitter. This picture on my time line of Richard Lewis. MSNBC's orienting builder and Alexandra Daddario. And I was wondering how do they know each other performed Bill Thorne. Thanks, bye. This is weird one as an MSNBC. STAN bub. Do you like Ari Miller. We have been watching slash listening to Rachel meadow like every single day for ten years, and it's very much it's not a brag because it's actually sort of lame. It's lame depressing. It's it's really white noise for me. She just like, I listen to it on a morning when I'm showering. KEO it's comforting to me. I usually turn on the podcast and I just like play audio and I'm half paying attention. It's just like it's such a deeply ingrained part of my warning team that I can't shake it. It's not. And so when I do see, I don't necessarily love it. I'm Rachel STAN. Everyone that I have MSNBC on his white noise as a lot of people with cable to. I don't particularly care for a lot of people on that channel. Like I don't like listening to a lot of them. I love Andrea Mitchell. I got a soft spot in my heart for Chris Hayes. Our Email Bor is difficult because Ari Melber is have you ever wanted to show now his whole thing is like really, really dry humor about like pop culture, things and specifically rappers always talking about rappers like he wants. Does that too. I exit. Yeah, but Ari Melber does way more to even more insane extreme. So I guess what I'm saying is I don't..
