We run the gamut and honestly, it's everything from carved wooden boats by hand and we're partners with the center for wooden boats as well. And you can go down there and see boats that were carved literally by hand by people who only had a hatchet in the hammer and all the way up to large vessels like the tugboat, the Arthur fought. This Saturday and Sunday, visitors can meet students from Bryan's maritime high school, climb aboard a wooden boat and learn the nautical ropes, so to speak. We're going to have a monkey fist, which is a heaving line, throwing contest. So what that means is it's all up to the individual throwing the line how accurate they can hit the mark. Kumble's Taylor van sites with an explanation. 43 million Americans hold some amount of student loan debt last year, payments were deferred and interest rates lowered is a way to ease the economic impact of the pandemic. But Now there's a push to just cancel some of those federal loans. Reporting on this in The Washington Post is Daniel Douglas Gabriel, who joins us on the coma News lights as you report federal student loans make up $1.6 trillion worth of debt held by Americans. Is President Biden in favor of canceling any or all of that debt. So President Biden campaigned on canceling about $10,000 per federal student borrower. Azad part of economic relief and and had some separate ideas about improving some of the existing forgiveness programs from public servants as well as looking at some form of cancelation for those who attend public institutions for Before either associates are bachelors degrees. What we're really focused on here is the call for $10,000 worth of release through as as a means of improving the economy as a result of the pandemic. How would this happen, though it does the president have the authority tol this debt canceled through executive action, Or does he have to go through Congress? That is debatable. Right now, there are many legal scholars as well as lawmakers who say that he does have the authority under the Higher Education Act to use administrative cancelation. At through executive action. Some folks do not believe that is the extent because it's never been done for something quite on the scale, but proponents of this idea said The same authority that Trump administration used to waive interest on federal student loans for the almost last year. Um, is the exact same authority that President Biden could use in order to cancel some portion of debt as disaster relief. Is there any Republican support for canceling the debtor? Is it all going to be uphill for President Biden? Yeah, there isn't any support us for for canceling debt through this particular means. I say that because you know, there are existing loan forgiveness programs for public servants, teachers, nurses and the like, And that does have bipartisan support. Those programs need to be reformed some to make that a little bit easier and simpler for Participants. But this particular form of debt cancelation so far is very much within the Democratic Party's platform and only the Democratic Party's platform and more so towards the more progressive liberal and of the spectrum. Because not everyone that within the party full fully comfortable with this idea of cancelation because there are other competing policies, including doubling the Pell grant for low incomes, college students and looking at some form of tuition free public college. So some folks are a little concerned that if we focus so much attention on canceling the dead, there may not be enough political will momentum and money to address some of these other policy prescriptions. Finally, in any price tag, assigned to this idea of at least partial cancelation of that there hasn't been a definitive price tag on a 10,000 that President Biden campaigned on because we're so rating to see what the design of that policy would look like. "Happen today. NBC from all appearances, It was a peaceful transition of power. No big demonstrations, no riots. And ABC News Washington correspondent Andy Field with a closer look in the tens of thousands of National Guard troops certainly seemed to help Andy. It didn't the fact that there weren't really any outside Spectators here. In fact, we saw chatter online in some of the few social media sites there is still left for some of these right wing groups. That they were told to stand down. Don't even risk going up against 25,000 troops in Washington or another cities. And so we saw relatively little unrest. I think also what may have chilled Their excitement about trying to do something like this again is the fact that the FBI has arrested I think over 100 people so far, and these folks are facing serious jail time and As much as you want to overthrow a government and follow a guy who now is no longer in power. You probably want less to go to jail or prison. And so that may have helped stop some of the Problems again as well. Even with that, Andy, I have to admit when I saw the Bidens get out of the beast, the big limo just about the driveway. There, the White House. I was a little concerned that a lot of people were that why they did that There could still be problems. You know, having been in that zone and covered virtually every inaugural since the second Reagan inauguration. That is a very secure area in order to get in there. Even the reporters that you saw, I think President Biden did a bit of fist bump or an elbow bump with Some reporters. He's walking down Pennsylvania Avenue. There, you need to go through about four or five levels of very tight security. Even to get to that point. You've been vetted. You have credentials, so the people who were in those areas Were pretty well known to the people who are in security there. I think one of the bigger problems over the last couple of days and we saw this was that they had 12 National Guardsmen who removed from duty there. Two of them. They thought may have suspected ties to some of these extremist groups, the others they were just being ridiculously cautious. Some of them had some sort of criminal. Record or something in their background that may have raised some eyebrows and they were removed from their posts there just to be safe, But thankfully, we got through the day without any problems, and Joe Biden and Kamila Harris are literally Back at work within minutes of arriving in the White House. Let me ask you this when you talked about your experience covering these events. Is this the sign of inauguration days to come Andy? Or or is there feeling that post pandemic It'll be more of a celebration with massive crowds and future inaugurations? Boy, I hope it's not a sign of things to come. These have been Really terrific celebrations and even with President Trump and the controversial on how big a size of the crowd there was there I was in that crowd. I was on that mall in some of those big, empty spaces. There wasn't the giant crowds that he eventually generated later for some of his big rallies, and the president was all upset about that. And tonight we have the first press conference from Jen Psaki, the new press secretary for President Biden. Much different tone than four years ago in Sean Spicer came out in an ill fitting suit, not expecting to give a press conference at all. I think he borrowed a suit jacket from someone and then proceeded to literally The very first things out of his mouth were lives for the administration, saying that it was a much bigger crowd that it wasn't Which was odd because virtually no one cared except the president. Let's hope for future large crowds and inauguration days to come. Thank you, Andy. That's a B C's Andy field. 6 40. There was a sense of not One guy in charge of everything, but a sense of this was going to be inclusive and Randy. It's gonna be quite some time before we can say our long national nightmare is over, and the pandemic isn't going away anytime soon. And, as he said, that's job One and I think president didn't realize is that I think the people around him realize that and But until they can make good on his promise of 100 million shots in 100 days, he won't be judged is the success. I mean, if they fall short in that very basic promise that does not portend well for the remainder of his term. And so that's why that's where the focus needs to be. Joining us on the camo news line is ABC correspondent Mark Ram, a lard mark. We we started with, too, but we have multiple people who have been taken off detail What's going on here. Yes, as part of the enhanced vetting of these 25,000 National Guard members, 12 of them in total have been removed from this assignment for the inaugural coverage our security coverage now the Department of Defense said that two of them were removed over concerns about Extremism and comments or text that essentially made them concern about ties to potential far right extreme or radicalized groups. They did not say who these groups were or what they may have been affiliated with. But basically, they said, one of them came through the chain of command. So presumably a colleague or a fellow guardsman, or someone had given some report to you know their superior and then up the chain of command, which notify them about one of these guard members. And then, in the other case, it was from an anonymous tip. Actually, for so there were two of them that have been removed from their details over that extremist concerns. Now they say that they will be sent home and then their command. Back at their home base, or, you know, law enforcement back where they live, will conduct any further investigation or disciplinary action, or whatever might come of this. That will be conducted one thing at home then the other 10 were removed, according to the Department of Defense, for other reasons, disciplinary issues or there was Some potential criminal links or something like that, that they uncovered through this additional vetting process and the Department of Defense said in all of these cases, The first goal was just removed them from service or remove them from this particular assignment. "And branches, knocking out power to hundreds of thousands of people come ozone. Herb Weisbaum is a victim of these intense gusts. What happened at your house? Heard we were watching TV last night about midnight or so and the storm was, you know, the rain was coming down. It was so loud of the wind was world and overhead and you know it kind of scared. We live with a lot of trees in our neighborhood here in Bellevue. Always said there was this gigantic thought and shaking of the house and all the power went out. And I thought it was ah, big thunderclap that had taken place right over the house, like there was a storm self right over the over our area that that's what happened. And after a few minutes, I just decided tow. Go look outside to see if a line it come down or what had happened. I opened the front door and there's like branches and this gigantic tree was probably 5 ft. Around in circumference. Was on the house, and it was on the dormer window up there, so it didn't go all the way through the roof. Thankfully, that sort of broke the fall. But there were branches everywhere I looked, and it was kind of scary that when it was hell, and the rain was coming down and my neighbors shelter me, there could be a live power line. Don't go. Don't go walking around. We don't know what's going on out there. Neighbors, an engineer. So you know we hunkered down for the night. And we're thankful that dog was scared out of his mind for Sami was panting and trying to find a place to hide in the cat buster who's not afraid of anything was under the bed. Um, and then last, But at least I went to my office with a dormer window wishes to sort of make sure no rain was coming in or what water was coming in. I looked at the floor. The first thing I saw was paint chips and plasterboard all over the place because the impact of that tree hitting the dormer window. It shook up all the Two by fours or four weights wherever they were there, and there's cracks all along the walls and stuff all over the place. So we really lucked out that we didn't It wasn't worse. This is a day when you're dealing with calling insurance. And you as a consumer man, I'm sure you're taking down notes learning a lot of lessons. What can you tell us? What have you learned from this? What were you ready? For? What? Weren't you ready for? I'm always prepared as I've done so many tips about being prepared so we had. I mean, if we had to get out of the house, which we didn't we have a guest log fireplace, which worked And a gas hot water heater so we could take a shower and I one circuit is on the house. We have some power on for some reason till they get the tree off the line. We won't know. So something's work. Um, realized the refrigerator was out. It would be good for like 24 hours of the freezer, but we're not gonna power back for a couple of days till they get this tree removed, so I was able taken extension cord and plug it into the one circuit that was running. So that's up and running, and we had a couple of power strips so we could use that to get a couple of things go. Hunt wanted some coffee in the morning, etcetera. Um and then we had just bought for the For the winter season. These lanterns, their battery powered lanterns. They sell my home Depot. All those Carlos those kind of places. So while we had flashlights, which you could see around with it lights up like a good portion of the room, and I don't know there were $19. Whatever they were. They were just phenomenal to light up the place. And then if we have an escape, you know would leave the house. We did have our go bags. We had to go back in the car. We had to go back in the front hallway with all of our stuff in that the medicines in the back of glasses and all that kind of stuff, and I remember turning my wife dead. When this is all over. We settled down. Stop shaking. I said, you know, you always have to be prepared because in an instant in an instant life can completely change. And you can't say, boy. I wish I had done all this stuff. You have to do it. And be ready. And that's the real big takeaway lesson from this is you have to be ready for the worst to happen because it could happen in instant and you've got to be prepared toe. Take care of yourself.
