Can Seattle arts groups survive the pandemic?

"Corona virus is a public health crisis of course but it's also devastated the economy it's been especially destructive businesses that depend on people gathering together in person tourism restaurants and the arts. Kyw's arts and culture reporter. Marcy silman has been monitoring the health of the regional arts and culture community. She spoke with kim. Malcolm about what. We might see moving forward so marcy for the past couple of months. You've been doing some deep dive reporting on how the pandemic has impacted our cultural communities. How would you describe what you found across the board. Kim organizations are treading water. If they haven't already drowned you might remember last march. When governor inslee issued his social gathering restrictions. everyone had to shut down operations museums and some art galleries have started to welcome back visitors. But they're at twenty five percent of normal capacity which just does not sound sustainable. And marcy you and i've talked about how performing arts groups and musicians have been streaming content and how it just doesn't cover the costs for many of them. So what are arts leaders telling you about this pivot to digital when it doesn't pay the bills. Peter bowl who is the artistic director at pacific. Northwest ballet told me that he pivoted digital because he wanted to give some work to the dancers musicians backstage artisans and other staff who would otherwise be unemployed. According to a new study from the seattle advocacy group arts fund. Thousands of area of workers are still jobless and even though as we said. Some venues have reopened. This survey found only about nine percent of local artisans and been rehired many back part time or reduce salaries but kim beyond providing jobs. I think that this pandemic has really forced performing arts groups to reckon with the digital age in a way that they hadn't done before the pandemic kit. And what do you mean by that. Well for at least a decade arts groups have been trying to figure out how they compete with free or low cost online content that arts fund study that i mentioned found that every responding group plan to permanently integrate digital content into their arts program offerings the ceo of arts fund. Michael greer told me that's partly because audiences are really leery about heading into enclosed spaces with lots of people that component that new revenue component is going to be essential to kind of filling the void of individuals. Trepidation do moving back into the theaters or just a general reorganization of how society interacts with itself. Not even just in the arts bottom line marcie will most arts groups survived this pandemic. It's really hard to say for certain. But to quote the head of seattle's office of arts and culture randy angstrom. The sector is on the knife's edge getting people to value in compensate artists and creatives for their time was already a challenge. Then the pandemic it and it was devastating. And i think that that devastation was disproportionately felt by by park organizations and artists because they've been underinvested and undercapitalized for so long and i'll just note here by poc refers to artists who are black indigenous and people of color. What is happening with these communities. Well this summer one worries alicia. Johnston told me that they only have the funds to make it through the calendar year. I did check back with her earlier this week. And she says that right now. They've got about half the budget for twenty twenty. One heart of that came from contributions sparked by black lives matter but she told me those have tapered off and even though she describes herself as one worry self designated worrier about money. She's pretty hopeful that they'll raise the two hundred thousand dollars. They need to keep this community cultural center going. Marcy i know can county. And many private funds have funneled relief. Money to the arts sector. What are arts leader saying about what they need to survive. Many hope congress will enact another significant stimulus measure randy. Angst room would like to see a twenty first century version of the works progress administration. That was the depression era program that funded arts projects across the country. Local artists have already stepped up. And they've been making murals. And creating digital arts lessons plan for the public schools angstrom and many other folks think it's time to fairly compensate them for that work. And how optimistic is he that that might happen. I'm gonna let him answer that. I am hopeful because the creative community of the city gives me that help. I am hopeful because of the incredible resilience. I've seen and we need to meet that resilience with dollars and faith in their work but angstrom says the city cannot finance this on its own. They really need a major influx of federal dollars. At this point. Who knows when that's going to happen. We'll mercy speaking of resilience. I have to acknowledge. Even though i don't want to that this is most likely our last on air conversation about the arts as you retire from k. u. o. w. after a remarkable thirty five years. Marcy i just wanted to say thank you we're gonna miss you and all the attention and the advocacy for the arts. That you've paid Here in this part of the world. I'm just grateful for all the work and thankfully that still lives online. It does indeed. It's been migrate pleasure working with you as the all things considered host. And i'll miss you. And i won't be gone from the world of seattle's arts and culture still always keeping my eagle eye on it.

"Hello everyone podcast number thirty eight. My name is Cam Connor along with my son on Chris. So welcome back. Everyone is head of a heavy week in the world hockey in the last couple of weeks and we will will be covering that. So we'RE GONNA GET DAD's opinion on Bill Peters everything that's going on with him you're GonNa talk about someone you know pretty well Darryl Sutter and bit of criticism criticism. That's come his way over the last week and then we'll get out of the heavy topics you've got a couple lighthearted stories to sharing you got some interesting questions questions before we get started. We wanted to thank everyone. WHO's been following data on social media? FACEBOOK instagram your most active on twitter. which is cam connor and joe been posting a lot of last run the past photos that people seem to be enjoying so if you haven't followed him yet take a second and give him a follow? We also want to thank everyone who has purchased our merchandise especially during the black Friday sale weekend. It's not too late. Always check out view from the penalty. Box Dot com slash merch. And Dad. I know one day. We'll be watching the game and walls look in the audience and we'll see someone in the crowd wherein of youth from the penalty box shirt or sweatshirt. Maybe we'll settle for wearing a hat but you know our with eighteen thousand people at the Games to get a camera on good luck to you will settle for an iphone case but but anyways we appreciate it. So thanks everybody WHO's purchased any of our merchandise and lastly we've noticed a lot of reviews views on itunes and spotify. So we really do appreciate that. We do read them and I know it helps. Give Dad the motivation to keep digging digging up those stories and recording these episodes. So we're going to start with your Stanley Cup. Prediction team Tampa Bay lightning added. Ah Little Bit of an update. Dad How are they doing. Tampa Bay lists rule back the clock last year their first place I think if I'm not mistaken overall all in the NHL for most of the season they ended up per spice overall. And when you go into playoffs people know you're good teams. No you're good and they really do get up the this year. I actually think it's not a purpose book Tampa Bay's in the middle of the pack for their division. And I personally personally. Immune if I'm the code ship the owner I want him in the first place so pay bragging rights but honest to God. It's like as long as you get into the playoffs. That's really what it's all about. You know as I've said before when you get into playoffs even if your team or you as an individual at not had had the greatest season you get in the playoffs. It's like all new season and if you shine in the playoffs that's what people remember so with Tampa Bay being in the middle of the pack. I believe that they come st reading area. They make the playoffs. That's when I believe Tampa Bay a as long as you're goaltending. That's I've said that one hundred times you got to have goaltending the gamache and as long as it goaltending ending strong in the playoffs. That could be the team that this might be years. So I'm still sticking with Tampa bankers alot. There's about the teams just like the ORLA loose because I mean I live here in Edmonton. They've got a team that Had any given night they could beat you six to one like they've got some firepower coming from the three guys. The potential there in you know as I said when you get into the playoffs. That's key get into the playoffs. I would want wanted chicken on the orders. Saad goaltending has been rising to the occasion. It's a long year so you know there's some next day get beat like everybody in navy you buy three four five goals. You don't want to see it happen by overall encouraged by the Orleans goaltending and Tampa Bay and the Orleans for example. Our teams really do not WanNa meet in place for so I'm GONNA stick with Tampa Bay so now we're GonNa talk a little bit about Someone whose his name has been in the news for the past couple of weeks. And that's Bill Peters he how do we say he's been. I guess accused by. I hope I don't put your name at Liu Who wrote on twitter not very surprising. The things we're hearing about Babcock Apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Same sort of deal with his protege in Y Y C which is the abbreviation or Calgary. Drop the bomb several times towards me in the dressing room in my rookie year. Because was he didn't like my choice of music. The next one came from cow Jordan. Sorry if I butcher his name never wish anything bad to the person but you get what you deserve bill after years making it so the NHL had experience with the worst coach ever by far kicking me in punching another player to the head during the game in the end. They I guess Calgary suspended him did a pretty quick investigation feel like it lasted a couple of days and then they. They didn't fire him. They let him resign. So my question to you. Dad Is all the teams that you played with or all the players that you've spoken to. Have you ever seen a player. Ever get physical with another player view racial to another player forever. Take it to this level that Bill Peters has been accused of you know I Wrack my brain on that one for Sindh. I've never I've never heard heard anything racial like players. There's certain topics you know this things that you just don't say that the even if if you don't like the other team you're going to say something just to get him gone even if you don't mean it but I've never personally have heard her nores anybody the I know that played in the NHL or the W. H. A.. You even the miners is ever brought up that deeper a racial card. Somebody you know calling somebody the of another race a name. I just haven't heard and I know if it would happen on the teams that I played with played four. Not only me but the other guys would have said Whoa. WHOA WHOA you know? You've crossed that line. So it's unfortunate. You know you get a coach. That's doing you would never mind the twenty or twenty five players out a team. You get a coach that's done this. I flabbergasting that You know this bill repeaters that you would ever do something like this so I think he's got you know he's really Rhoda are a letter that stated needed you know regretted what he did and he just kind of when when he stated that you know it happened a decade ago. Well as soon as I read read that he is minimizing what he did by trying to make it seem like it was a long time ago. Soon as I saw that I just shipped my hand and I I I just hope that they would kick them out of the League very quick 'cause then they chose not like that so I'm glad he resigned. And what's interesting from your perspective is. When you played there probably weren't many players of different ethnicities that would have been tying so I guess one of the positive things with how? NHL has evolved is that all ethnicities and Henry's are now hiring in the league and some people are saying that while this is great the NHL hasn't kept up with this in terms of enforcing policies in having more are tolerant training and really incorporating all the different cultures of people that are are playing in the League again. If you look over the years back when I played like we didn't talk that way we just didn't talk our you know. Today there are lot more people playing hockey. And that's great to see and I don't believe the players today. What even think about something like that? My you know while I was Gonna say but admitted a bite my tongue dictate. They just don't think like that. I think every one of those players feel very fortunate to be doing what you're doing. All of us are Additives maybe oop dead. But not to the point where you start name calling that that crosses the line and I would hope that this Mrs Rare on this unfortunate that somebody who you look up a coach coach would do that. That's just blows me away. So have you ever heard of a coach coach actually getting physical with a player that didn't perform well or something in that sorts. I can't imagine you would tolerate a coach punching you. I've never I've never seen that kristen. I played football soccer water polo lacrosse. I've been just just about every sport you could play and I've never witnessed anything like that at all to hear that bill peers actually Obsta a guy head and it was a player and it was on the bench and Rob Grim Dimuro I saw him a TV and he said yes that did happen. So it's not just somebody saying it and maybe exaggerate an just blows me away. I never I've seen a lot of verbal abuse you know in my mind is Kinda crossed the line but you know we're we're hockey players. Were tough you gotta be mentally the top notches physically tough and you know our feelings get hurt too but you just Kinda roll with it and you pissed off and you're not maybe inside. You don't like the coach but not to use coaching. And you got to forget about it. Move forward unfortunately. So for Peter's The punch somebody like that just blows me away. I haven't even seen a coach. Cushion player nevermind. Hundred men had to kick somebody in the leg or whatever he did. Yeah you got shoot pads. Aw and no. It didn't hurt but it's the action that somebody will even think about doing. It was interesting as you're talking. I another player layer has come forward this time Sean. Avery who I know has a colored has but he has said that Mark Crawford has when he was coaching Ching him kick him as well and he said you know how I stand at the end of the bench. He came down and gave me an ask that left a mark so it sounds like this is a lot more more common practice in. It's interesting to me that a coach things that that's the way to try and teach a player but his mistakes were. It's a show something you know. Cummock from Sean Avery. We heard him on interviews. DOC is old girlfriends. This is on hockey night riding candidate. You know one of the other players that was a defenseman save retrial. started the old groper and their rogatory things that he said the actions that he does on the ice but he is a troublemaker for him to even step up said somebody did this to me..

"bill peters" Discussed on 31 Thoughts: The Podcast

"It's Friday afternoon. I'm in Toronto. You're in buffalo just in advance of the Buffalo Sabres. Toronto Maple leafs game and earlier on Today Day. Bradsher living general manager of the Calgary flames had a press conference in Calgary announcing that Bill Peters has resigned effective immediately as the head coach of the Calgary flames and will no longer be part of the organization. We'll start with a wide brushed. I hear what did you make of that. Press conference and that announcements. Where where do you WanNa Begin? I mean obviously there's still a lot we don't know here. It sounds to me like they reached a settlement with bill. Peters about what was gonna the happened with a contract or anything. I thought they did an interesting job of at least spelling out what the process was on November twenty fifth in Pittsburgh Burke during the game I was made aware of a tweet on social media from Akeem Olu post game. I immediately met with the media. Inform them that we were aware of the allegations. Obviously something that we take very very seriously and that we would immediately early. Beginner review of the entire incident in issue post game prior to departing to Buffalo. I made a call and contacted. Did a Chemo Lou. which was the first of two conversations that I had with Akeem throughout this review on the plane? We were going from Pittsburgh Buffalo. I sat with bill and questioned him about the the incident in question and a long conversation with bill traveling to you buffalo. Once we arrived at Buffalo I met with my staff. Communication Staff Management Staff. There was in attendance and we put together an action plan of how we would move forward and the three critical areas that we felt that we had to have on. That plan is number. One Was To conduct a full review of the situation of of the allegation of the incident and it had to be thorough. I've been criticized a lot over the last three to four days. Things have not move quickly. They've not moved in a timely fashion. If I've not met anyone's time agenda I apologize but it was more important to make sure that we get all of the information. This was something that needed to be handled correctly. It needed to be handled in a timely fashion but I was not going to trade carelessness for thoroughness. Second part of our action plan was dealing with our team. We're in the middle of a road trip dealing with young men were made aware of this allegation. I met with the team number of occasions number one needed to provide support to our players needed to provide information and updates. We check to see if there is any situations in our team where people were putting in situations that they were not comfortable with there. Were none but dealing with thirteen was important and then third part of this was dealing with the media. We tried to give you much update as we can as regularly as we could with as much information as we could. The media speaks to our fans speaks to our stakeholders and we thought it was very important. That everybody was kept up to speed on this process. It may not have been perfect but we tried our very very very best Later that night to I communicated with bill that he would not be part of the team And that he would be taking art practice November. Twenty six really started the review. Here obviously the allegations took place in Rockford. I contacted and tracked down various members of the organization Asian five players That were part of that team. Management of the Chicago Blackhawks Management. At that time of the Rockford Ice Hawks members the Rockford Ice Hockey coaching staff again met with our players in the twenty sixth and we also prepared for the game that was going to take place on the twenty seven. That was at that time now in the two thousand six informing Jeff that he would be coaching Moving Craig Conroy. Down onto the bench with Ryan Hoskin Mardi Jalen A- and really really do the host of issues that that take place on an operational standpoint later that day and into the early evening became aware of allegations that took place in Carolina China on the twenty seventh. Now we'll move to a met with bill form that he wouldn't be traveling with team that we would fly him home to Calgary which he did on the twenty seventh seventh and at that time I made contact with past and current members of the hurricanes management stuff as well as the player that went public with allegations ends of of contact and these things take time Former players are all over the globe. We tracked him down and spoke with him. We played that night on the twenty seventh in off flow and during the game I received a letter from bill which also went out publicly as as a statement that was dressed to me? Yesterday we arrived early hours On the morning of the twenty eighth I gathered sort of the information that we put together the information that we've been gathering obviously obviously communicating both internally to the people within our organization senior management ownership throughout this process was involved and communicating regularly really with the League and continued to follow up on calls it I needed to follow up with that brings us to today and the resignation letter that received from bill this morning and now I think the question is going to be more. Does it go from here. And I think it goes beyond Calgary they said for the flames basically basically the matter is closed and I think now the NHL investigation takes over and you know. How did we get to this point? Where eleven years there's after one action and Four years after another that they finally got out and I think that now the NHL takes over. And I think we're gonNA see the The investigation into who knew what and when and also what this is going to mean for the future how this is going to change the way things are done. Yeah let's roll down a little bit that and Just as you're talking I'm thinking of the line from the movie Magnolia. We may be done with the past. The past isn't done with us. I don't think in nor do any of us think that the past it done yet with us. Currently in the presence from Calgary flames point of view really. Is this done. I'm sure they'll probably have to do some talking with the League to do about you know what they knew. And you know Kinda how they knew it In terms of their looking into Bill Peters. I think that one of the things things that's going to happen here is I don't know for sure but we're kind of talking about it is when these incidents happen. Who needs to know you you know Brenston? We'll talk on spinning checklists with Mark Crawford and that was handled internally and then and they felt it didn't happen again and that was the way it needs to get done now. I wonder if that changes that whenever something like this happens and God forbid it ever happen again. The League has to know that it's no longer to an organization to decide. We can handle this internally. Nope you have to tell us. And I think that's kind of where it's GonNa go in terms of making sure as your line from Magnolia says the past doesn't bite you because you deal properly in the president I think for the flames you know. They're in the middle overseas. You heard the Carolina guys talk about it the other day the incident was relatively the recent four years ago and not a lot of guys are left from their team but they just said Hey. We're looking forward and the flames are middle of the season. And I think they're going to say that too they're gonNA save there year Elliott. I'm with you. I thought it was an interesting way that bradsher living laid out the time line of how everything came together and as much as it may not have quench the thirst of some people that wanted more details and wanted More out of Bradsher living. I don't know that we should be surprised. Every every step of the way every person involved in this one including Bill Peters himself in that letter that he released. While the Calgary flames were playing the Buffalo Sabres. Everything we think here has been heavily lawyered. So I don't know how we could expect anything other than what we got. You know I got a very interesting though today to to agree with you about that. You know we've all wondered why he has apologized for Carolina or talked about Carolina and his statement and and somebody made a good point to me and that is that is still something that I w would be anything like this but there's legally they're issues around that if you admit to something like that could there be anything you have to face a lawsuit. You know I don't think they'd be charges urges by a lawyer would say you have to be aware of that. And so I wonder when you kinda wonder why no apology to Carolina for the players in Carolina. That might be it. And that's another idea of how lawyers have controlled this process. So for the Calgary flames and Brad for living This is now something for the past. We shall see if that remains true if anything else comes up around Calgary we don't know but we do know that from the NHL point of view Elliott. The investigation does continue. Where does he? NHL Go now. Why Cuma Lewis said? He will be interviewed by that. I know that Bill Peters is on the list to be interviewed by them. I believe some other people are going to be interviewed interviewed by them. You know I could see Ron Francis being on that list. I can see the hurricanes Some previous and current members of the hurricanes being on that list. I I can see the people in the Blackhawks Organization being on that list and I can see them saying if anybody else. There has any concerns wondering that happened to them. You're welcome to come here to and I think that that's basically you're gonNA it'd be the way it is. I think they're going to try to find out. What else is out there? Why certain anything happened? And I don't think this is going to be a short process. I think that they are going to try to uncover everything they can and should all lines lines of communication that they can and also. It's not only about what happened. It's about what makes sure this doesn't happen again. And what can the penalties be for not reporting a what can the penalties be for these incidents occurring. And I think that's kind of where we are. How can the NHL act on its own here or does it have after act in concert with the Players Association and I do WanNa follow up by asking you where the Players Association is in all of this? Technically if you're under contract which which you can have any P representation but she if you're called on to appear you have to appear you know it's not like you can say no so. I mean the lose at the Players Association. I'm sure they WANNA act as an advocate on behalf of players that they feel has been wrong. But like like you said like you know Jeff. We've only been in this process for four days. I mean it seems like four years but we've only been in this process for four or five five days so I think we're still figuring this out you know also Thanksgiving weekend the state senator. I think well the shells working at that. I think this is going to be something. Were commits a lot of time to and I'm curious to see where it's GonNa go only a couple of minutes left on this when this just a quick thirty one thoughts..

"Of the National Hockey League suspended bill Peters a black player says Peters use the N. word about him years ago Peters has apologized but faces an investigation by the team which David McGuffin is covering from Canada's capital Ottawa either David Hey there so what what exactly do Peters do so he basically according to this player chemo Lou who played from in the minor leagues ten years ago he dropped he uses a tweet the dialer put at this week he said he dropped the N. word several times towards me in the dressing room in my rookie year because he did not like my choice of music on quote by some Peters is he's a hard nose sort of coach is sort of you might call a disciplinarian old school style lose twenty years old at the time he said it really impacted in this moment other players not team of confirms that this happened as an assistant coach so I added wrinkles in this actually as well is that there's been separate allegations out this week that he Peters physically abused other players as well so yeah so he's been pulled from his coaching position behind the bench in Calgary they're investigating the matter he's not yet been fired and our people responding in Canada which is a country that I think of is generally welcoming diversity or trying to yeah I mean can it it's I think there's been a lot of anger certainly among some sectors there's been a lot of disappointment that things like this are still happening in hockey in this day and age and this is only ten years ago as you say this is Canada's national sports this game is really woven into the fiber of what it means to be Canadian there's a sort of a very outspoken former black NHL players yours to rocky played in the NHL for a dozen years he says growing up he heard the N. word all through his youth playing hockey into back though not at the NHL level but he says Peters needs to be made an example of that guy should not be coaching that a challenger that was ten years ago the image also don't want to have a coach like this in early do working so hard to roll to get you to say the hockey is for everyone that something like this happen to me is so wrong for its part the NHL has called Peter's behavior repugnant and unacceptable but it's held off commenting told us further further investigation I just said no to Peter's did release an apology through the NHL's through the initial team through the flames which he apologized to the often the organization we didn't specifically apologized Hulu which really stood out to a lot of people and Lou is called that that apology insincere and I guess we should do I guess we should note that in that apology appears to acknowledge you did say what he was accused of saying all this some question about the exact circumstances how does this fit in to broader debates about diversity in Canada right now yeah so he I mean US down there may have heard earlier this month there is there was a famous Canadian hockey commentator don cherry really one of the most famous people in this country frankly who was fired after he went on air during hockey night Canada broadcasting accused immigrants who your first two as quote you people one quote of not respecting Canadian military veterans during Remembrance Day celebrations up here so there's there's just a there's there's a there's a real debate now going on about whether hockey has which is an incredibly white sports so whether that has actually embrace the diversity that this country house and brace itself in the last several

How does hockey reckon with an abusive power structure?

"By the time you finish listening to this podcast. It's likely there will be more stories out there about abusive hockey coaches right now as we are recording this and as you're listening to it. The sport is facing a reckoning. It began with the toppling of one of the biggest domino's in the game. Mike Babcock out as coach of the Toronto Maple leafs tonight. Every mounting losses position became more and more tenuous and tonight his reign lean over. leafs nation is over. Mike Babcock was fired by the Toronto. Maple leafs for the same reason. Tons of hockey coaches have been fired before him. His team was underachieving. He might have been a bigger name than those other coaches but still not unusual then. The story started during the two thousand sixteen seventeen season. Mitch Moore had a private meeting with Mike Babcock and the coach asked then rookie to list the players on the team from Best Work Catholic to worst martyr complied not realizing that that talk within show his list to some of the players ranked the lowest and not long after that it became clear. The stories weren't just about Mike Babcock. Major allegations made against Calgary flames head coach. Bill Peters a former. NHL Her Chemo Lou. who spend spend some time with the flames in the early part of this decade calling for his alleged use of racial slurs while they were both part of the Chicago Blackhawks Organization now players ears are saying publicly things that used to be kept behind closed doors at all cost and the NHL in almost every league below it is realizing that it has a problem problem or more accurately that it has had a problem for quite some time? Now the question is what happens next. What did they do about it? What changes changes in the leafs? They've been playing a lot better since they fired the guy who humiliated one of their best players who thought I'm Jordan Heath Rawlings. This is the big story. Jeff Blair is a senior writer at sports net dot CA. He is the CO host of writer's block on Sports Net. Five ninety fan every day. He has covered a lot of dressing rooms ends and locker rooms throughout his career. Hey Jeff how you doing short. I'm doing well you've You've covered a lot of dressing rooms and locker rooms over the years I was. I was thinking about this the other day when the stuff happened with the Chemo. Lou and Bill Peters out of thinking to myself. I ever seen a locker room. I thought something nothing really poisonous and happen. And I think because unbalanced I spent more time around baseball clubhouses than anything else and initially when I started reporting Winnipeg CFL locker rooms is kind of a little different than hockey. I mean baseball. There have been African American players. There've there've been Latino players in baseball has its issues but it's nothing to go on a clubhouse now and see that the white players are in the minority I mean that's just the way it is and the NFL. When I covered it's the same thing and I don't remember any relationship with a manager or coach or a team I thought was particularly toxic? I mean they're examples of tone deafness. But what I think happens more often than not in a lot of these situations is just the manager coach. Whatever you WANNA call it becomes tone-deaf two things? Well why don't you start then by explaining how we got here where it started with Mike. Babcock in the leafs. Yeah there's a couple of things first of all. I'm a little concerned that people are sort word of mixing. Mike Babcock not you but people in general people were kind of going all Mike Babcock and then Bill Peters. Because here's the thing Mike Babcock seems to have tried cried some Caveman Sports Psychology on Mitch. Martyr So tell us about that. Mitch Monitor the first year. The story is now now that everybody's confirmed Mike. Babcock wanted him to work harder. So Mike Babcock called them into his office and said list your teammates in terms of hardest working to least hardworking. And tell me where you'd put Yourself Yourself Mitch. Marna with coach wants to do this so he goes ahead and does that and Somehow and I I don't know when it came out but somehow Mike Babcock doc essentially went to some of the guys that were below martyring. Say Mitch thanks. She works harder than you. You know this guy's dog in it right now and he thinks that works harder than you and the best line out of the Whole Story and God love Mitch. Martin but the best line of the whole story's Mitch Marnie just kind of shrugging and going nobody took it seriously right. You know it's like that's just that's just babs so I mean their stories. You know you can go. God stories about would coaches used to do for motivating players or trying to catch players airs. I Never Scotty Bowman Scotty. Bowman got tired of his team's missing curfew. So Scotty Bowman would go down. And I can't remember which city this went down to the front desk of the hotel and I think curfew was midnight. Went Down to the front desk of the Hotel at eleven thirty gave a stick to the dorm and said do me a favor when the guys come in get them to sign the stick and we'll we're going to auction off to charity so the next day Scott he goes into the locker eight. These are all the guys that showed up after midnight. Their names are on the stick so I mean stuff like that is you know. That's all part of an old school. Coaching you mentality. Whatever you think of it? Yeah it's and I mean at the heart of the the coach player relationship and this and this is why we'll talk specifically about. Bill Peterson Chemo. Lucas IT'S A. It's a point I think people are missing. I mean at the heart of a coach player relationship. It's a power relationship. I'm the coach. I control the most important part of your career. I control your time I control. How many starts you're gonNA make I control? Will how many at bats you're going to get I control if you're going to be coming in the ninth inning. I control if you're going to start back to back games like Then I control. You're earning power. This is sort of at the route. That's the traditional relations traditional relationship. Is that changing it is in the NHL. I find this fascinating because the four major sports in North America all right now if you look at sort of the players relationship to to power in the game the NBA players leak. It just is players are getting lots of money They make a a lot of money from shoe deals so they're comfortable financially outside of what they're earning contract like Shaquille O'Neal didn't spend any money he made playing basketball. He invested all all he lived off. His shoe deals coaches have no power over anybody in the NBA the NFL's you know you're disposable piece of meat. There's no such thing as guaranteed contract. Baseball's always had a very very strong players association. It's Kinda splintered now and I think we're kind of in an every man for himself air but what's happened in hockey is there has been an an influx of really talented really young players and because of the way the NHL 's collective bargaining agreement is setup. You Essentially Ashley. Now have a bunch of guys who were twenty two twenty three or twenty four making eight million dollars a year under contract for five six or seven years and that's the biggest difference to me. Is that players always used to make more than the coach and this is specifically the NHL players always used to make more than the coach. But they've got more term So if you're Mike Babcock and you've got three years left on your contract you've got Mitch Monitor. He's got six years left. He's making ten and a half million dollars a year. How do you? How do you motivate that? How do you manage them? It would take us. Ice Type. Doesn't matter to him take two minutes ice time away from me. I'm getting ten million dollars a year and by the way I got a job here for years down the road and you say that so hockey ocoee more than any other sport I think is is going through. This and hockey is going to half the data and and and the coaches are going to have to. The players aren't going to have to adapt. The coaches are going to have to debt. And this this gets the Bill Peter Situation and and why I think this is particularly vile you know first of all. I mean there's no statute of limitations and racism so I've heard people will make the case. Well he said this ten years ago three organizations ago he wasn't even with the flames. You have somebody claiming that he. He used the N.. Word that he used a racial epithet. You have that player's teammates backing you up. You have subsequent you have players coming out. Who played for Bill? Peterson Peterson Carolina. Saying hey he physically abused me. You have players coming out and saying yeah not only did he. Physically abused Rod brindamour. Not only did he did. He physically abused guys. But you've got player saying oh by the way we spoke. The Ron Francis who was general manager the team at the time and he didn't do anything wrong. There was something but the Akeem loose. The situation is really. I find it really bothersome. Because what was he supposed to do. You know these guys are playing in the American Hockey League They're not making a lot of money. Bill Peters when he was coaching that team the Rockford ice hawks. He held the future in his hands. so if you're a guy like a chemo Lou and you're trying to establish yourself or you're trying to get your career going going to your general manager and writing out your head. Coaches racist is probably not not a good career. Move and I think more than anything else. What this says is that at that time? Ten years ago that organization Chicago Blackhawks. There wasn't a structure in place. I mean I'm not gonNA say that guys don't yell things at each other in the locker room or on the ice and we we know they do. We know that racial epithets unfortunately are still a part of the sort of the on Ice Onfield Dialogue and sports. I don't think this happens now though like if we were rewinding this Chemo Lou had been Ah. I don't think that happens. 'cause he reports to somebody or he goes on social media then and it's taken care of but it bothers me that people are saying that some people are saying well you know ten years ago and nobody else stood up. It's people have to understand Dan that again. This gets to that that power relationship between the player and the coach. There's no way the player could you know what are you GonNa do. You're going to sacrifice your long term financial future because of this. I mean I'm not. I'm not saying that means. Bill Peters is right but hockey I think more than any other more than any other sport just by the the nature of how players are developed. Kids leave home. Kids go to town cities. They're billeted with people dependent on the structure. They are dependent on on the power structure there absolutely dependent on the power structure. And I think maybe that's what has created this culture around hockey the the NHL is really really trying. I think to find a way and I mean the NHL in general teams coaches are trying to find a way to deal with this the new age the players the the ultimate lesson the lesson from hopefully for this whole thing with Bill Peters is that there has to be every organization has to look at itself often say do we have the structures in

"No matter how long it's been. BRINDAMOUR comes forward. Because of of the kid in Calgary and and and the story on Babcock abusing sport actually because of the kid that played for Carolina's now in the K. h. l.. I think I'm not sure. But he came forward because of him he had nothing to do with the story but he just came forward in the last couple of days right but only because of Michael Jordan who played for Carolina. The story with Lou is about Peter's when they were down together down to the minors nut and my point is brindamour has nothing brindamour is nothing to do with that one. I understand that but I'm Elliot Elliot. BRINDAMOUR comes forward because of this other story right in the domino effect. Yes you're right. It's too coincidental Steve. Yeah he's coming forego okay You know it's like a bunch of guys standing around Steve. You don't look at it this way and their hockey team. And and maybe when the coach leaves the room after him using the n word and the and they rally around the guy. Let's do don't try and drop that. Try and forget what he just said it was wrong. It was brutal let's regroup You know and and you hello everyone at that point a dozen say a word about coming forward so until tell some guy goes you know what you guys I needed to talk to you about this. This is bullshit. This is what this guy did and I'm GonNa go talk to the GM and then maybe two or three other guys go. You know what you're right. You're right if you do it. I'll do it if you do it. I'll do it and if you do it then I'm in etc et CETERA. And I can certainly see that scenario with brindamour going. You know what it's high time. It's high time that this shits gotTa stop and I gotTa be in to bring it up so yeah and you see in moments of other like somebody tweeted out earlier today about You Know Peter Latvia. Let you know there's a guy that's had great success in the NHL. And when he was with the Philadelphia Flyers on the bench and he gives like a pretty solid punch to the back of the head of one of his players on the bench like wouldn't and then just an absolute look of a homicidal maniac in his face as he's yelling at him like that's just not the way to handle people.

"You got the bill. Peters accusations expanding and these new ones are backed up by Carolina. Head coach Rod Brindamour will the sensory son Mark More Orbi Esky. The guys leadership cannot be questioned and will expand on that the Edmonton Eskimos fire their head. Coach probably look into Ottawa for help once again and finally early the sends hosting Boston they only get on the scoresheet once. Back up the struggle Thomas. Yes it was. That was the goal by Thomas. Chabad Dave Randolph with the call on sports net that would give Ottawa. Uh a one nothing lead. Nice play by Chris Tierney as well the past kind of reminiscent of his pass to Brady ca chuck overtime versus Montreal. Fewer call That that gave the sense of one. Nothing lead but the cuddly Brad Marchand tied at a short time later she bought didn't really have a very good shift leading up to the sedan. With Shara era winning goal couple of battles lost their on fifty fifty bucks leading up to that but on the front. How incredible isn't that? That guy has been captain of the Boston. Austin bruins now for fourteen years guys gone from Ottawa. For fourteen years he took a high sticking in the face tonight in return to Ottawa. Bleeding and I would wonder how you miss a high stick on a guy who's nine feet tall. Meanwhile the sends out shoot their opponent again as they didn't Columbus but they lose their second second straight a low scoring. Tilt this time your final two one to Boston and again as they did against Columbus they looked about as good as you can in a losing performance. So that one's right in tank nations wheelhouse I suppose. Entertain me. But don't put points on the board toward the standings won't that high draft pick. Here's D. J. Smith after the game we worked really hard You know we made a couple mistakes and ended up on our net real good players of there's scored but You know we just haven't found a way to to score on our chances but I don't know if we can play much better through bird's there's a lot of really good things that we did out here for a young team to come out here and play as hard as we did against that team. I thought we were great. So the sands lose two in a row for the first time since October. Twenty first you score one goal in two games. I usually gonNA come away with a couple of losses. They were the better team on the night though the outshot Boston. Thirty four twenty one just not enough finishers as DJ Smith was alluding to that. powerplays plays horrendous like nine and a half percent this but that in perspective for you Edmonton Tampa Bay Boston. They're all up over thirty percent. Right now sends sends it nine point five. It's not a stretch to say that if the power play was merely week in a run of the mill week instead instead of horrendous sends it'd be probably hanging around in a playoff spot honours Nielsen made nineteen saves Rask with thirty three. I was thinking about Nielsen. How you know? He's clearly. Got The number one job from Craig Anderson here in Ottawa. It really is worth revisiting. How good the trade was that? The sends made back in January. The sends picked him up with a lot of fanfare really from Vancouver for two guys whose NHL careers were over. Mike McKenna was one of the guys the sends gave up there. He played one game after the trade and then retired In the off season Tom Pyatt played no more. NHL Games and ended up going into Europe. Boys platen in Sweden this year. That is a pretty damn cheap price for a number one goalie. Anyway sends lose to the Boston a little better than Montreal. We all did the night before halves. Falling eight one to Boston at home. The bluebirds out sends next action will be on Friday November twenty nine gets the Minnesota wild the first game of a five game road trip so the wild and the sends meeting the two bottom two of the bottom five teams in the National Hockey League. Now there's more allegations coming Out Against Bill. Peters a lot of these stories are.

"For whether the reason the reason he looked like he did it is because he didn't agree with a Lou when he came came forward to say. I need to talk to you about this. Next move is no and then and then moves them. You know it's the fact it's ten years later or is it is what it is you know that I don't know why the guide waited ten years. Here's but but I do on the other hand that a lot of this is just fine. You know fuck it. It's water under the bridge. Got A guy like that. It's like like the these cases we've heard over this year from Matt Lauer and Epstein. The Movie Mogul Guy or Epstein was the not the movie mogul guy but the guy who was Who's the big movie producer? WHO's kicked this thing off so Harvey Weinstein. Yeah so what happens you get you get those high profile people and this guy falls right in there. You know the coach Peters eaters and so we ended up calling that. When you look back at these other other things so you get Weinstein Epstein and you get Matt Lauer and a bunch of other? Oh Shit that's happened Louis C. K. The Epstein thing was way gross though that was its own category right where Mike comparison is my comparison. His with all of those things where people coming forward years later right and the the problem with it is for people like that who get abused used from people who are in positions of power when people say. Why didn't you come earlier? Well the reason is they got a career. They're having to think of so they're faced with this unbelievable gross dilemma. an actress for example trying trying to get a role and this shit it happens to you and your new in the industry your work you know these interns who got abused by Matt Lauer. So that's what happens if I do this undone. I'm toast when I come forward so I don't WanNa hear anyone talking about. Oh yeah why do you come forward ten years later you know. Put yourself self in their position you put yourself in all those examples You will when they ask these people even even why they asked him. I don't know but but that's why that happens. I'm sure I totally agree. I mean it's a it's it's by definition abuse of power In two thousand nine bill. Bill Peters would have the sensibility to know how wrong that is and he wouldn't use it like if appear or His boss were a black man Dan he would never drop the bomb on someone that he had respect for but because he was in a position of power over the players. If this all went down as this is being presented then he would know that he didn't give a shit. You Know De. Just I'm just GONNA go ahead and say it if you did something back in the day. Ten or fifteen years ago You you better look at that. You better look at that and say I I. I should deal with this. I gotTA deal with this. I lost my mind and I would like to see someone at some point. Who knows that they did something heinous as said something or active in some way to come Ford and say I've got to come clean on something that no one knows about right? You know in a in a in a better world I guess. That's that's what would happen. But that's why this happens. That's why you imagine this poor guy. The coach runs in the whip that around all day in the locker room. And then he's what can he do as with the metoo movement You know you you could see Hollywood trembling in its boots right because you knew that that was a rampant issue that was happening and continues to happen. I'm sure but I feel like the same thing is happening with bad coaches not just in hockey Across the board anybody. That's in a position of power. But you know this discussion is about hockey. and I wonder if we're GONNA see this wave of bad bad stories now come out that people people feel empowered to finally step up and say hey This coach did this. And this is how this coach treated me back in the day both professional level and a minor hockey level. You see it on a minor hockey all the time and not just the kids who want to stay on the team and don't want to disappoint point coach but the parents well because sometimes you you're playing at a very high level and competitive hockey and coaches doing something abusive There's a lot of parents who amenaces really heinous But there's a lot of parents who would turn the other cheek because they don't want their son to be excluded were they. They don't want them to be off the AAA team. So they kind of roll with it. And so this gives the coach like just all encompassing power our and the wrong personality given that power it can be a very dangerous thing. Thankfully I think the grand majority of coaches are we are reasonable people but It'll be interesting to see if we're going to see this. This avalanche of new stories come out. That people feel empowered to step forward and tell their story Orey. Yeah well closer to home you know gay rights and the Gay community right has has been has been battling for a long time now to be accepted in in the main street mainstream society society right and it's been nothing nothing about an uphill battle for those people and at some point someone's stood up for someone came came forward and closer to home when you look at. What Mayor Watson did Scott Macarthur that these guys came out? It's fantastic. It's fantastic for people who are who are gay in this circumstance. I can't do this man. I might lose my job. You know. It's sad it's a sad state of affairs but Kudos to this guy looking back at that thing ten years ago and saying can I can put a positive spin on this thing and you know he maybe talked to some people about it and said I got exposed the guy so for those who come after you know and so but that is that that is fucking racism on steroids to me. What that guy said? Yep Okay when we come back on the show I want to get to our rb computing web poll and also want to get to Some Trivia as well so the RB competing web poll is about this particular topic so lots of good feedback on on twitter at TSN. Steve I WANNA remind.

And so those are those are good eh but going grey cups. I wonder a Great Cup with my brother. My most a I've been to a bunch and my brother and I going to go to Montreal all the big old to watch. It was some sort of significant game because the Eskimos one so it would be in the must be in a right the late. Seventy sometimes Eskimos WANNA bunch and they played they seem to play the Alawites in the Grey Cup every year to during that time the right right back in the Sonny Wade Davis Stevie Johnny Rodgers and all that stuff and my brother and I just got totaled more at the game and we were annoying people starting a noisy next thing I know about the start of the fourth quarter. Two guys come up behind us. Okay in the stands and just throw a blanket over top of us and and tie it what we think that move you guys you guys shut up sit down shut your hole just not shut our whole cheer and all that. But I don't know what we're doing. That was probably bridge jumping up and down. And I don't know probably spitting on people off the bad wages because I couldn't talk not not not in a bad way is probably like when I talk the spirit capable. Just put a blanket a blanket over us and that's your most memorable birthday. That's that's one of the one of the most memorable ones for sure. I think most of my Memorable stem cell Christmas stuff. I think about things that got for Christmas and all that but I did one birthday year where I got a just an awful looking vehicle. It was a it was a Honda and Honda. CIVIC was. It was quite popular in the day. But this is a called a Honda Civil Matic and so it had this big square hatchback on it so picture this standard little Honda but a big ugly the ass on it and it was Brown Dirk crap brown color and it was rusty already but it was not not too bad bad and my dad just picked that up as a just a used car and gave 'em from my birthday so it was wheels. I was happy to have. It now is thrilled. And so that made it memorable rebel but as a vehicle. Who boy did that suck ass? Honda civic me and my brother did Honda Civic. Yeah I remember One of the funny stories was my brother. Joey Got God wrestle. He had he was up skiing camp fortune and so he took the car for the date. It was a little small. Small hatchback was just sort of around little. You're talking about one where the big the end was the back end was bigger and stuff this. Maybe it was the same sort of thing but little stick shift and he was up skiing and my dad and I was down in the basement in the record. Steve Watching sports that day and there's a phone oncoming dad was really cool. Nothing much bothering like you never. He's not he's not. He didn't get into high drama. Didn't overreact very laid back and until this day my brother phones and says hey dat no no cell phones landline. Answer the Phone Day showings jungle. Yeah sure no. He's he says what's going on. He says talked. He tells me to answer the phone. Answer the phone. uh-huh what's going on. He says well smash the car. I said Oh no you okay. Yeah I'm fine I'm fine. Oh you know and I sit here talk to Dad. My Dad's like what's up. He says. Yeah I've smash the car. You know driving driving back and forth and he goes well. What do you meet some extra car because what happened? Why slipped off the road? It's fine though and can drive it by dad. Says he goes. Yeah I could drive. It goes okay. Well get home. Don't worry about it you know so. It's all my dad's like did. Oh this hung up the phone get back turn the volume up TV. We hear the door open to the house and my brother comes downstairs and he says hey that and tomatoes. Yeah Hey hey how was skiing. My father said Yeah. The skiing was good debt. It was pretty good because what happened with the car and My brother goes well. We're just driving on that road come from skyline. I don't know if you know camp fortune there was one. Say The lock Berg side. We're locked Berg. Lodge was and then skyline skyline was the other side of fortune. There's a Chevrolet there and you could anyways says there's a road to road together camp for coming down that little winding road down and the car slips off the road into the ditch was icy and because okay goes So the the passenger door my it doesn't sound like because yeah it's find find. The passenger door doesn't open it got. It's SORTA bent. They're a little bit and all okay. Well the passenger doors open. Yeah that doesn't doesn't open the hood. Ah The hood SORTA got crushed and you can drive it. But you've gotTA SORTA stretch stretch your head up. Stick it up so you can look over the hood. Gee what you're able to drive. Give me that again or does it over. We've got a new front bumper okay. The door doesn't open on the passenger side. You gotta get the the last cracked okay. On the on the driver's side window ah cracked and the Hoods Anyway de goes maybe we should have a look and go outside. It's fucking toby's just totaled old. We might have different ideas of what it means to be drivable. Yeah I ever really heard him. Swear he's like what does Jesus and then it was like anyway it was. I just remember and I think that was around my birthday. That's why I remember that story hilarious. That's what sitcoms are made of Steve. Those fucking real life things Anyway good story for sure. It has not been a good day as we transitioned to the sports side of things for one. Bill Peters SA- Guy Who is Carolina's head coach for a long time. He was a team. Canada coach. One of world hockey championships recently. And now the Calgary flames head coach and the G. M. Bradley living is doing damage control today with all kinds of reports reports about a very bad situation. tree-living says Peters is still on the staff but isn't sure whether he'll be behind the bench for the next game both the flames and the NHL are both investigating a new allegation that Peter's directed racial slurs at a player ten years ago when when the two of them were in the minors Akeem allu- who's a nigerian-born player says Peters dropped the end bom several times in addressing room during his rookie year Peter's hasn't commented on this yet tree-living apologized for not having any definitive answers at practice in buffalo on Tuesday and They're gonNA be taking on the sabres coming up on Wednesday or tonight as we record this and right now. I haven't had a chance to sit down with bill the living said or our people internally to talk about this and get to the bottom of it we take these matters very very seriously and so at this stage of the game. Here's what basically is being alleged from a low. Yeah I I've never heard the story yet. got a Louis Black and he tweeted out on Monday and it was based on after the Mike. Babcock things right. Because Peter's and Babcock have been they've worked together in the past in fact I think Peter's was coach Babcock at one point in any event because Babcock was going through all this stuff the things that were alleged against him In the whole Mitch. Martyr thing so a Lou tweeted at Monday. That Peter's dropped the bomb several times toward me in the dressing room in my rookie year. Because he didn't like my choice of Music Olu said. He rebelled against him and Peter fors- bonded by asking Chicago Blackhawks executives to send Lou to a lower minor league level and a pretty tough situation and it doesn't look good at all for Peter's because after that tweet Frank Sarah Valley from TSN got a hold of him and then also got a couple of players who were in that dressing room to back up the story so does not look good for Peter's right now so so what I know you can't read the tweet Maybe gave it all to us right. Now what what was the tweet can you. Can you fill in the blanks or or leave the blanks where the bank should be left. Yeah and it was basically He's said something along the lines. I'm paraphrasing but peters is alleged to have said Kay Akeem turnoff that end music. I hate that end. Music Zik with ends doing other ends in the blank shot that and music off and then he leaves the Room Lake. Doc he said like you know something like this so casual right as if he had said you know. Don't forget to take your sticks tonight boys and then leaves and so everybody was according according to a Lou totally shocked and you you said you could hear a pin drop after Peter's did that. Yeah well I'll tell you what it sure makes Don Cherry's thing pale by comparison. I mean my take on this. Steve Always said you you know what what what's racist and to me. It's what what's the intent. What's the intent of what you're saying because people can't get a little tongue tied they can get a little mixed up and and so so we gotta look at the guy and say is he a racist? What's his intent? And when I hear that okay way you are gone you are gone man. This guy's a racist disguised racists based based on that and a heavy heavy one. You know it's like that scares me. You know that that one's scares me like what are you. What are you really you know? And and some of those people say although that doesn't sound I'm very unedited but you just wonder what they're thinking about in their own head you know. That was ten years ago. I mean that's two thousand nine men. The bombs been taboo for a lot longer than that. Obviously sorry you broke up. I say the end bomb has been wildly taboo Abu for many decades beyond that totally totally. It's a there's no offense or buts you've got fire the guy there's no i. Can you see the guy standing behind the bench tonight. No I don't think I can I'd like to hear his side of the story because as with the Dan share. I'm not that I'm comparing the two but I did one here. Don Cherry's apology and And then sort of measure it from there as to whether she lose his job over what he said. I don't know that there's anything that Bill Peters can necessarily say to save his job other than complete and utter denial but the fact that That there are some some other players who are willing to come forward and say yeah a loose presenting this exactly the way it happened. It's hard to imagine that Even a denial his going to help things. Yeah you gotta you gotTa Chop Them. You GotTa get rid of the guy you I don't I don't I can forgive a lot of stuff man But but that one is just. That's you know that's your into your into the hate deal there right. Yeah and I guess at some point after the incident in the little relationship as you'd expect soured and so apparently Peter's goes up to a low after this happened at a practice that would happen. I guess within a couple of days of that and snapped at him about how something was going at practice in lieu said. Don't even talk to me and at that stage. Peters responded by by saying you know what I want this guy gone down to a lower minor league level. So it's not it's not just the racist commentary. It's also the behavior after the fact not getting to the bottom of a DECI- Kyi's this wise. This player talking like that all of a sudden well he knew full well while he was talking and like that. And that's to the game you know if you're a sensible guy you're you realize okay while you're what I what I said. There was way over the line. I need to mend these fences fences instead. He compound things by an Illu. Believes this by helping to destroy guys. pro-career.

"I don't know what they're gonna do with their goal tending because even Blackwood and I need to see more. But whether it's can Cade Schneider's been hurt. You look at lock. I don't think they've got a number one goaltender. I mean. I I think the devils are going to be serious contenders. Down the road. They've gotta figure this goaltending out. So I'm not going to be that worried about keeping Kate. I still think he's a perennial backup. David Hynes says other than John Cooper, who do you think is the most deserving of the honor at the end of the season coach of the year. Barry trots, Bill Peters, Phil Housley or someone else. Well, how's he saw something to prove right now? Buffalo is in the plows. Bill Peters who got fired by Carolina has taken an underachieving. Flames team has made them one of the best teams in the NHL. So the names that you mentioned John Cooper's got the best team in the NHL. But nobody surprised by that Barry trots deserve consideration. Because the just looked like a better coach team by the playoffs aren't promised to them either. Neither it is to Phil Housley Bill Peters right now. And I do have a vote as broadcast or I do vote for the jackass Dems award. I would give it to Bill Peters. PJ fifty five has how do you see Lou meaning Lula Morello playing the trade deadline with the islanders Lee Nelson, ever Lii and more all free agents at the end of the season. And while a plow spot is a possibility he does have probably more things to deal with at the trade deadline. Than other general managers true. But you never really get value for a guy that can walk at the end of the year. I I got a chance to talk to Lou, I guess it was Thursday when the Rangers were Addison Square Garden, he said he's having a ball being a part of the islanders. He's a Wheeler dealer for sure. But I think he understands the importance of this team getting to the playoffs the importance of building something as we move towards them moving into their new building. There's a real push to get the playoff games to be at the Coliseum. I think of Louis feels like he's got a team that can make the playoffs and make a bit of Iran. I think he will hold onto those assets. I think maybe split the difference. Some will go some we'll stay. I think Lee stays. I think Nelson stays I think Abberley might be somebody he might deal away. But I think Lucy's value of team making the playoffs after missing since two thousand sixteen not having been out of the second round. But once over the last twenty five plus years, I think it's important as well for the islanders to to make the playoffs. So we'll see another island or. Question. Rumors that ho sang messed up again by showing up late to a meeting then falling asleep. He has a history of this which sent him to the minors. And now a trade rumor what is the return on him. Sounds like the extra baggage will bring value down. Certainly will you can't tell me that the islanders are dealing from strength. We know his talents. He can flat out dangle these captivating player, but he's a problem child and everybody in the world knows it, and that's going to be used to their advantage in trying to trade for him. But I do think you can get something for him. Lou obviously doesn't play the game of being late. But he also doesn't play the game of of trading talent away. When there's true ability tell team, so we'll see how it works out. Robert says Don you've often said that the Rangers should trade Hayes because he can re-sign free agency. But how often do rentals re-sign with teams that traded them? If they really want him long-term, they should give him a new contract before free agency. All right. We're art. Clearly, they could have done that last year and didn't Hayes only wanted to sign a one year deal. Now, he could become an under strict free agent because clearly he wants to be an unrestricted free agent. And I don't think Hayes would sign a deal unless he's blown away. And I don't think the Rangers should be in a position to blow Hayes away, especially with this upper body injuries going keep out for seven consecutive game..

"Have you checking your crawlspaces tonight. The Denver Spiderman doesn't really deserve his name. His real name was Theodore Edward Kony's. He was a drifter who in nineteen forty one decided he'd settled down. There was a little problem the home. He chose was already occupied Chona's is found a trap door in a closet that lead to a tiny attic. Cubbyhole? He went undiscovered for five weeks leaving his hidey-hole to -cational steal food out of the fridge. One day the homeowner Seventy-three-year-old Bill Peters discovered Kony's as he was foraging for food Philip wacked Kony's with his cane and Coney responded by brutally murdering. Philip bludgeoning him to death with an iron stove Stoker police investigated the mutter, but they found no signs of a break-in. And though they found the door to the attic, they didn't explore it. They thought it was too small for any human person to fit through after the murder. The victim's wife and the housekeeper reported hearing strange noises in the night, and they believed the house was haunted. So they moved out and Kony's presence remained unknown. He stayed in the house until nineteen forty two when police came to make a routine check and they heard noises coming from the second floor. They followed the noise and saw a pair of legs vanishing into the trap door. They grabbed them before he could disappear. He was tried and convicted for Phillips murder and spent his life in imprisonment. Although really was that a punishment is so probably felt like a sprawling estate compared to the tiny. Nookie hit away in. So do you have any crawlspaces in your home? No reason just curious. All right. So thank you for coming on. This is really fun. You guys have anything to plug. Yes. Thank you so much for happiness. Katie yet. You can catch Nolan myself on our show ridiculous.

"I mean. I can be in the battle. I mean, it all comes down to Mike Smith being healthy and playing well, six years of age. So that's a question Mark, right? When he was healthy last year, they were better than when he was out when it was out. It really kind of fell off with them. So he's obviously key for them Bill Peters. I really liked him coming into Carolina. I liked the fact that he went through all the steps. I really, you know, in Carolina a little underwhelmed by what happened there. I know there was some limitations, but at the end of the day, you know, I didn't see that team really moving forward over these last couple of years. So I think for Bill Peters in Calgary, now some of that stuff, you know the the Calgary Flames have shown they're willing to spend money. You know, we're not gonna be able to look at Bill Peters now and say, well, the organization just didn't really support him. You didn't have the money, couldn't go out and get the players and a lot of young guys. I mean, this is Bill Peters is the second job he should know exactly what he's getting into. This'll be a big test for him to see where he's at. You know, they moved Dougie Hamilton, I'll out of their statistically Dougie was pretty good, but for whatever reason. Fit within their group. So you know, you're round goes back as a captain a little bit older, but still in pretty good player. Thirty four years of age. Hannifin comes in still a lot to prove for him. TJ brody's a good player. Hamernicks solid by her fans, don't him from his time with the islanders. So I, I mean, I think the players are there any upfront real Monaghan meal. You right down the line and they have some pretty good offensive players, but they're in a very tough conference or tough division and they're going to have to need. They're gonna have to have things go well, and they're certainly going to have to have likes best play well and you know the Golden Knights. They went out and got Paul Stazzone that's gonna help them. Obviously up front, Nick Holden. They picked up on the blue line. But my biggest concern is Ken, the guys that really just had career years for them do it again, can Carlson duplicate Marsha show that is so many guys there that I thought just played out of their heads now that they come into their own, or were they playing with a chip on their shoulder and have career years? Because I, I don't think they can afford all these guys to take a step back at the same time. Time. Yeah, I know. I agree with that wholeheartedly of, you know, it'll be interesting to see how William crossing does this year. I mean, he was just so good last year, talk coaches that was probably a top five player in the league last year, forty three goals and just was a dynamic player in all situations. Can you know? I'm not expecting him to score forty three goals again this year, but I'm also not expecting of course towards six. I mean, I'm expecting that he's going to have a very, very good season and be a similar player that he was last year of the second go round. You know the it is going to be different. I don't know. You know, it's just that's the way it is in in pro sports updated in life. I mean, you know, they came together. It was a unique thing. Everything happened now in the offseason they added Paul stabs me not the speediest guy, but you know a proven center in this league that can give them a little more depth than the middle. I think when they played Washington that was kind of a whole Washington centers, you know, we finally saw a team that had like real depth down the middle, give the give the Vegas Golden Knights trouble. So they had staff in there. They've added. Max patch ready now, who's the goal scoring winger went out made the trade trying them longer term little bit younger than James. The kind of a similar player. He has experience as a former Canadian with the would you go with these system coach in Montreal..

Anybody was curious how off over here. I enjoy the crock getting seen all the details. You know, the first seen very well because of you. Good shake. All right, glared Disney history for Peter Pan is it was released on February fifth of nineteen fifty three. It is based off of the play Peter Pan or the book the boy who wouldn't grow up by j m berry it is the fourteenth Disney animated feature film. It's let me see here. Peter Pan is also the final Disney film in which all nine members of Disney's nine old men worked together as directing animators when they popped up on the screen. That makes me sad, don't. I was like all these, the nine old men. Yeah. Look, I recognize these names now. Yeah. Is also the second Disney animated film starring Kathryn Beaumont, Heather angel and Bill Thompson after their roles in else wonderland. And we also get our best friend Bobby Driscoll back again for another film at this time. I don't have to look at his face. Totally different voices different. I don't know. I grew up, which is ironic because Peter doesn't grow. Yeah. So I'll be honest, I did not know until I reward it yesterday that the white rabbit and the snap losing my marbles from Peter Pan is the white rabbit's voice. Me. Yes. Yeah, I didn't hear the same voice. I thought Wendy point many Wendy in Alliston. Yeah, but I had not known that until we did the Alice episode actually. So then re watching this again. I was like, oh my God, it's she's analysts pizza. Oh yes, you're Ellis. She's like an even more proper Alice. Yeah. I mean. It's things like it's very similar, but it's like even more like anguish aristocrat Alice. Yeah. So this film was entered into the canes. Is it canes? I feel like that's wrong pronunciation. "The kind words and yes now now he start writing checks all right kid earned it no dad's gonna pay for it okay but the big news though elliott thinks that the big news they'll peter's yes now exit the carolina hurricanes as you've talked about for a couple of weeks on this podcast and in the column had the option to exercise out he did as we tape this podcast one o'clock eastern on friday afternoon bill peters is now ex of the carolina hurricanes how soon he said is he current of the calgary flames or am i drawing that let eight to be a little too obviously and should we wait until we see maybe there's some interest in dallas maybe this is the range it's be just say it's going to be goggle as you said we're taping this waltz not official it's going to get done he's going to be the coach of the calgary flames and somebody asked me to couple of not just one person a couple of last day you know why bill peters the hot canada all of a sudden and you know i think some of it is timing in the sense that if you look at a couple of the openings that are out there calgary they've got a general manager who worked with them and won a gold medal at the world championships and dallas has general manager who worked with him in detroit so these guys both know him and i think that that was reason like you know you're for brad tree living this is going to be as third coaching higher you're gonna go with someone that you know the best right and jim nill this is going to be well i don't think hitchcock was as much his higher but it happened his watch he's going to get the pick and you know he's going to go with someone he your general preferences i'm taking a gamble so i'm going with someone i know and i think bill peters found himself in a situation where two of the open jobs a run by people he knew because the question becomes what special though bill peters wise.
