Did Rush Limbaugh Have Lawmakers Calling to Deplatform Him?
"So you look at these quotes here, Chuck Schumer, we have a right to tell Rupert Murdoch and Fox what to do. We not only have a right, but on obligation and obligation to the boss around the press in America, have we ever seen, I want someone to tell me if this has ever happened in American history. Post the advent and the proliferation of radio, they went after rush really hard, but did rush have lawmakers? Calling for him to be taken off. I remember after the Sandra fluck thing, the Sandra fluke thing. There was a lot of backlash against rush and it didn't work. But for example, AOC deplatforming works and its important New Jersey representative Bill pascrell, quote this program was a sewer of countless lies and hate spewed on every single night. One of the leading election deniers and opponents of democracy in America and abroad will no longer have a prime time platform that's a good thing. Side note, there's a series of projects I want to do. I got nothing but projects. I would love to do that and we're going to do the question of what is racism. I would love to go up to lawmakers and ask them, hey, what is democracy? Can you define it? It seems that everything is democracy, mutilating kids as democracy, mail in ballots as democracy, open borders as democracy, censoring Tucker is democracy.

It's too soon. It's like, no, I didn't see any of the respect that I'm obvious. Well, yeah. Someone took my idea and ran with it. The respect that I'm entitled to. Why can't you treat me? I would be treated by any stranger on the street. Because I am not one of your fans. Your name is on the show. You can overrule us. We were saying at the ping Pong party. It would have been funnier if one of you could have smashed me in the face with a ball. Yeah. Yeah. Like meet the parents. You know, Marcia Brady with the football. Mmm um. So I would have just. Have I nose? You had sunglasses on the entire time. Yeah. Sunny back there. Until the clouds on the marine layer roll down. They turn on the heat lamps. It got cold. I did. And we fought bravely through the cold. Yes, we did. And by 66, I was going to say, yeah, by cold it means 66° because we are weak. Have we mentioned that she has a giant like football scoreboard for ping Pong? Sure. Yeah, there's pictures of it. We do background. Yes, you can see what she doesn't mean just come over for a casual game of ping Pong. There's like, you know, a judge, there's a word. By the way, I held off on tweeting out that photo. Because I wanted to find trouble for my girlfriend. She's like, I just yeah. I thought she said it was okay, but she's like, I'm not wearing any makeup or anything. But she's still gorgeous. She was like, I'm not wearing makeup or anything. When we're dressed up, why don't you? 'cause that's the first introduction of an image of fanny sitcom. Yeah, I know whose name is not fanny sitka. Thank you for everyone who said gorgeous. 'cause although the big sweatshirt was covering up the spectacular rack. And I really? Really? No, I can tell you can see the bazooka. Yeah. Okay. All right. Bill pascrell, junior tweets, a year ago I was the first member of Congress to demand clarence Thomas's resignation I had good reason. He is corrupt as hell, and he heard election appeals while his wife was conspiring to overthrow democracy. Yeah, this is just reason 605,043 white clarence Thomas should not be on the Supreme Court. He's Nazi loving. And by the way, always a close personal friend for many. They didn't become friends till after you were on the Supreme Court. Like, really? Well, he has like razor good judgment about that. No, he's not using you for anything, don't worry. By the way, how do you even go on a $500,000 vacation? I mean. I was not even possible. After you released a documentary saying that you prefer Walmart parking. Oh, you are. No, you like $1 million yachts. $1 billion yachts. Thinking nasty set. You're going on vacation. Starting Wednesday. Are you, how close do you are?

"In Missouri if you're pregnant, are we returning to the era of mad men? You remember the old TV show? 1950s? We'll talk about that in the second hour and our third hour Josh hawley and Ted Cruz have our fist bumping on the deaths of American veterans. I mean, does it get more disgusting than that? John Stewart is on that issue. Well, in the third hour, I'll bring that up in more detail. But you know, feel free to call and talk about anything you want these topics or any other topic. As I said, it is anything goes Friday. My op-ed today published over at Harvard report dot com is titled the Reagan revolution changed America's values to green is good. Can we take them back them being the values? And I started out by pointing out that many Americans looking at the Republican Party's position on the issues, find themselves confused. And I mean, seriously, consider this for a moment. Why would the party claiming to be the last bastion of reverence for life in America? Also be the party that supports 50,000 American gun deaths every year. The leading cause of death among children. And more than more than those of every other developed country in the world combined. Why would they support anti abortion laws that don't even contain exceptions for the life of the mother? Why do they fight so hard to keep healthcare out of the reach of low income working class Americans? It's 12 Republican controlled states still refuse to expand Medicaid, which is 90% paid for by the federal government. Why? Why would the party that claims patriotism on the flag as their logo worked so hard to make it difficult for people to vote? Why would they vote against supporting our veterans during their time of need? Why would they support authoritarian Russia and vote against democratic Ukraine? Why do they celebrate an autocrat and fascists like Victor Orban and invite him to speak at cpac? When he's openly taking Russia's side in this conflict with Europe and Ukraine and has shut down independent newspapers, TV and radio and Hungary and now preaches against the dangers of race mixing. Why would the party that claim to stand up for the average American and the little guy worked so hard to prevent working people from having union representation in the workplace? Why do they support giant monopolistic corporations? The force Americans to pay the average American pays $5000 a year more for goods and services than does the average Canadian or the average European. Everything from airfare to Internet service to cell phone service to pharmaceuticals. The average American is paying $5000 a year more than people in all those countries. It's essentially a tax, the monopoly tax. Why would the party that claims that they're for the working man and the little guy support that? New Jersey congressman Bill pascrell recently put together a Republican vote tracker that's become a meme across the Internet. 0% of Republicans voted for cheaper gas. 0% of Republicans voted for cheaper insulin. 0% of vote Republicans voted for child tax credits to help our young families. Zero percentage of Republicans voted to end gerrymanders. 0% of Republicans voted for the Voting Rights Act. 1% of Republicans voted to fight domestic terrorism. 4% voted for background checks to buy assault weapons. 6% voted to bring more baby formula into the United States manufacturer more baby. 13% voted to stop domestic violence. Only 16% voted for veterans cancer care. 23% voted to keep gay marriage legal and only 32% voted uphold the 2020 election. Why? Well, when you do a deep dive into the guts of the GOP policy operations, what you discover is that the Republican Party made a sharp right turn in 1981 when Ronald Reagan became president. It's referred to as the Reagan revolution. And it was a genuine revolution. Revolutions are not just changes in government. They are changes in value systems. When we revolted against the British, we said, we don't like the value system of kings and kingdoms. We want democracy. That was the core of our revolution, not the fact that we want a war. And the Reagan revolution was a true shift in values before the Reagan revolution. For the Republican Party, before the Reagan revolution, the Republican Party was a pretty reasonably stand up party. Dwight Eisenhower, who was the first president of my lifetime, I was born at 51. He was elected in 52. Dwight Eisenhower embraced the antitrust and anti corruption laws of his Republican predecessor, Teddy Roosevelt, who made it a federal felony for corporations to get money to candidates for political office. Who broke up the big trust, the big corporate monopolies. And Dwight Eisenhower also maintained the top 91% tax bracket on people making over $3 million a year that Franklin Roosevelt put into place. Eisenhower embraced all those things. He embraced public education after Sputnik went up in 57. His education department started programs for gifted kids all across the country. I was an element. I was in like second grade. I was in one of those programs throughout elementary school. It changed my life. And it produced a whole generation of scientists and engineers that brought about the transistor and the integrated circuit and lasers and antibiotics and cancer drugs and imaging technologies that then that research was also funded by the Eisenhower administration. When Eisenhower's brother Edgar is right-wing brother, wrote him a letter saying that, you know, your support for unions and for all this government spending is socialism. He replied, and I'm quoting from Eisenhower's 1954 letter to his brother Edgar. To attain any success, it is quite clear that the federal government can not avoid or escape responsibilities which the mass of the people firmly believe should be undertaken by it. The political processes of our country are such that if a rule of reason is not applied to this effort, we will lose everything, even to a possible drastic change in the constitution. This is what I mean by my constant insistence upon moderation in government. He continued, should any political party attempt to abolish social security unemployment insurance and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes we can do these things among them are HL hunt. You possibly know his background. A few other Texas oil multimillionaires. And an occasional politician or businessman from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid. End of quote, from Dwight ice president Dwight Eisenhower's letter to his brother Edgar. In the third year of Eisenhower's first term, 1955, his popularity was 79% according to Gallup. When he ran for

"Payment services target key Russian industries taking all the steps to deprive Putin and his inner circle of their assets he was hardly alone This is from the hill again They must feel acute pain for their crimes and the horrors that they are causing said representative Bill pascrell Caesar state's Impala yacht's auction off their possessions Top of their stock market embargo embargo their fuel None of that's happening Even Democrats know Democrats look at this and go what the hell is going on And even Democrat again every Democrat knows that we saw this before Every Democrat knows as president is the weakest president in our lifetime Every Democrat listening right now knows it This guy is just horrible and his administration the people that he has put in to represent him are just as bad as you can possibly get Horrible And yet they still managed to get worse every day Yeah I don't know who needs more proof but you should have enough by now And the thing that you sit back and you shake your head and I know we say it over and over again but it's sort of I don't know it's sort of just another huge nail in the coffin when because you said it many times And we still have three years left Yeah You know this is what Putin knows Is that regardless of how anything goes November 8th in the midterm elections this year Biden's going to be president until January 20th of 2025 at least So we got nearly three more years here of Putin basically doing whatever he wants in Ukraine Tell me what he won't do Because what is Biden going to do Nothing Nothing Oh well check back in a month to see if what we did is working And the media the mainstream media was pounding on him yesterday Yeah Right No it's horrible Everybody horrible Just so bad It is horrible We don't have to wait until Tuesday night I'll tell you right now The State of the Union is crap Wow There I saved you an hour What's the bet What's the over under on them shortening The length of time I've been thinking this is when you said that an hour I went really You can't go an hour I don't think I don't think he can go an hour You're going an hour here I'm sitting here thinking but if they do you know what you know what we're going to hear We're going to hear about the liberal transgender movement We're going to hear about all of these identity politics all these things over and over again because here's the thing They believe that's still working for them They really do I don't know if you're going to be surprised if you heard him talking about the liberal transgender activities I really hope I'm wrong But he is that they are that clueless I think the focus will be on the focus will be on the fact of the great things they've done in the economy I expect for example the number that came out yesterday that we have the lowest number of people on unemployment in decades And that's because so many people have just permanently got out of the workforce to begin with here And it's because there aren't enough people for jobs but it won't matter I think he's going to do I think that what was said last week would be forgotten very soon by this administration which has tell the American public the truth I think he will be looking to say the economy is rebounding Everything is getting better We're doing absolutely everything that we can possibly do in oil companies are making record profits in the UK Well that's another thing By the way thanks for that too Because instead of of course he's got a target oil companies and U.S. manufacturers of goods in his speech yesterday by saying I hope the American companies don't take advantage of the situation of what's going on As if it's the American because that's remember that's the thing that they're trying to do that even Democrats are stating stop doing that the American public doesn't buy it We talked about it was William galston the who said he needs to stop that The American public has figured out that it's not the companies aren't the ones that are overcharging That this is a result of your responsible spending by the Democrats promoted by Biden And this is the democratic consultant that said that as we went through that on yesterday's show saying you got to stop it People aren't buying it I think he's going to go right back to it because he is nowhere else to go except to pretend that everything is great and they're moving forward because you can't really tell the truth When the Democrats say the president needs to tell the truth well you can't tell the truth Even if he wanted to tell the truth even if they write it for him in the speech he's going to go well that says here that I'm supposed to say this but I'm going to tell you right now that's not the case Come on pal But he comes out and says that his polling goes skyrockets through the roof Yeah Finally we got an honest president I suck We don't know what we're doing We're completely and totally clueless The president's approval numbers go up to 80% Americans are saying it's about time we got a president who's honest with us That's right It's all crap doomed Doomed I tell ya 8.

"Is Bloomberg business of sports Talk about some of the more interesting aspects of business sports There's all kinds of cool questions So this is a fun topic to make The country is finally getting the memo about how amazing the sport is I think the sky's the limit for MLS We're spending more and more of our time in a digital world and it's also becoming a really powerful place for commerce It is so nice to be back and to be able to have fans back in the building So despite the chaotic schedule this is why we do what we do When you get into the playoffs there's nothing better at the player to excitement It is also full of the organization Bloomberg business of sports from Bloomberg radio This is the Bloomberg business of sports show that we explore the big money issues in the world sports on Michael Barnes I'm scarlet fu And I'm Mike lynch Coming up today we have a jam packed show We catch up with two time Super Bowl winning MVP Eli Manning and get his take on the NFL season a possible role in the Giants fraud office and his new gig as partner of private equity firm BVP This is not an endorsement We're on chats rolling calls as a group I'm on calls with other companies Here's our stories talking to CEOs and president and discussing with DVP whether this looks like a good fit if we think we could grow the company That's where they had on the Bloomberg business of sports show but first let's look at some of the top stories of the week and since we are all NFL let's talk about the NFL viewership it's still king It climbed 10% as the close game Scarlett bringing fans back Yeah and it puts to rest this idea that the NFL was losing its mojo that we started seeing in 2016 which by the way it was an election year And we saw ratings kind of steadily decline in a couple years after that there was of course the controversy over players kneeling during the national anthem There's all kinds of cultural war discussions but now it looks like the game the drama that the game provides is putting the NFL back in the top spot and I'm sure owners and broadcasters are breathing a huge sigh of relief Oh yeah And Lindsay one of the things the league was saying that even though the drama and comedies on traditional TV the ratings are falling NFL games dominate They've got some great matchups and some great storylines Can Tom Brady win another Super Bowl at age 44 Aaron Rodgers has become a polarizing figure now Kansas City and Patrick Mahomes the most entertaining team in football the cowboys are back in the playoffs They're America's team America's most popular team Bill Belichick has the Patriots back in the playoffs Can they make a run at the Super Bowl And you've got the rams a big city from Los Angeles So despite not having any teams from New York City they dig in the playoffs The really interesting And the other thing don't discount the influence of legalized betting That keeps people glued to the TV not just for who's going to win the game and beat the point spread the overrun There's all kinds of prop bets and people are hanging around to the end of games and watching games that they might not be interested in He did not have a little bit of a coin on the game Speaking of football unfortunately when we move on to the next story but I got to bring up a lot of coaches have been shown the door in the past several days after the end of the regular season that includes the New York Giants Joe judge and also lynchy GM Dave gettleman Yeah and that one was not too much of a surprise to people because the Giants who had just been flatlining for the last couple of years under both of them Gettleman said around with some great teams I'm interested to hear what Eli's take is on that Brian Flores down in Florida That surprised me They won 7 games in a row They finished above 500 they beat the Patriots twice and he was shown the door by owner Steve Ross I'm not sure that was a great move but black Monday is always a very unpleasant day around the day after the National Football League regular season ends And there's something else from football in the pros to college football Scarlett and it involves the coaches of Miami and Michigan Some lawmakers are demanding foreign inquiry Yeah congressman Bill pascrell who is the New Jersey Democrat he chairs the ways and means committee oversight panel He has sent letters to the presidents of Michigan state and university of Miami looking for information about the huge contracts that the football coaches have gotten $89 million for Mario Cristobal and $95 million for Michigan state's Mel Tucker The question he has in mind here is the contrast to the benefits received by student athletes but also the fact that these schools have tax exempt status and whether the compensation packages were talking about here 89 million 95 million fit in with the school's mission of being schools and not for profit organizations when you've got these outsized compensation packages And you guys know me I'm all about get all the money you can while you can But lynch is this on the line I don't think so because these coaches are producers think of them as someone that produces money for an insurance company the bore you produce the more you can make a commission you get I'll throw a couple numbers at you right now The Big Ten when Michigan state plays brought in $768 million this year Each school received $54 million And that money just doesn't go to the athletic department It goes to faculty it goes to infrastructure goes to new facilities The ACC where Miami is every school that gets $32 million before they even sell a ticket so that's the argument on the other side of the fence there that this is going for the greater good of the university in these coaches are producers that produce teams that generate revenue which benefits the school university And let's move now from football to baseball and there is chatter that apple is said to be in serious talks with Major League Baseball for broadcast rights garlic Yeah these are games that ESPN will no longer be broadcasting Some weekday national games ESPN will no longer have regular Monday and Wednesday games so potentially Apple might pick this up We know Amazon for instance one of those streamers has picked up NFL games So maybe apple is next And if apple joins in that opens the door completely to all these tumors because these companies have plenty of cash Up next on the show we speak with two time Super Bowl winning MVP Eli Manning We get the story behind.

"You might choose in your voicemail You ready to go Let's do it then Here is your first quote Here we go again That was The Washington Post reacting to the news that there's yet another variant of COVID out there now What is this one called On the phone who knows it's Greek The variant just when we were getting over the delta variant here comes another one you think you're depressed Delta Air Lines is really regretting changing their name just last week to amiran airlines The sudden onset of this variant is a surprise scientist thought we'd be safe because I'm a crime was so busy plotting against the autobots This is the first one that doesn't have a brand sponsor because coronavirus Delta Air Lines and now I think I'm a cry came about because the guy who discovered it was like I'm gonna cry The World Health Organization knows that if they want to make us take these things seriously don't name them after letters of the Greek alphabet because we're not that worldly Like anything that's not our alphabet just sounds goofy to us If you want us to if you want us to set up and take note of the name of after something Americans are actually afraid of like cheeseless pizza or something or not universal healthcare is what is called the immigrant This next one is called the immigrant Now the virus of course is continuing to mutate primarily because so many people are still unvaccinated and it's very frustrating to doctors but can we get some cool mutations as opposed to ones that just make it worse Can we get like a variant that would also whiten your teeth or one that will make you into Wolverine That would be what I would love a third arm You mean you didn't get that with the third shot I got a third on I gotta get my third shot now Yeah wait to get your booster Doesn't the third arm just mean another hand to wash Yeah And then if you first two hands are washing each other who's washing the third hand ever thought of that You know these new variants feel like the iPhone you know how you get the update all the time You're like oh I finally I finally figured it out They're gonna know you didn't Yeah 'cause we got an update So that's what if you wanted to ask me what other thing keeps coming in waves with more and more incomprehensible names You didn't upgrade to a Macron Oh you gotta get a cron because it's got these cool new emojis The who told me the who told me there was a new variant and I just clicked remind me later Later tonight All right very good Here Nico is your next I want to congratulate my north Jersey constituent on his run for U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania I'm sure there's fully genuine candidacy will capture the hearts of pennsylvanians That was congressman Bill pascrell Democrat of New Jersey congratulating which of his famous constituents on his announced run for a Senate seat in the next state over Oh is it Doctor Oz It is Doctor Oz Nico well done Doctor Oz of course is famous for selling magic weight loss pills and such on TV He has announced he is running for Senate in Pennsylvania Finally answering the question what do you do if you can't even get on Dancing with the Stars He announced his candidacy on his show though right And it shows like famous for espousing false statements So we actually don't even know if this is true or not I mean and I don't know I mean yes we're having a medical crisis ongoing but do we need a celebrity doctor and elected office And if so why this one Why not Dr. Dre or doctor octopus or Doc martens The fact that you put doctor in front of your name doesn't qualify you Doctor Oz falls in line with doctor Atlas They should go start their own pseudoscience Exactly I will say though The fact that he lives in New Jersey and is running you know in Pennsylvania shows that he's a doctor without borders That's why you're 30 under 30 There you go Boom 31 year old couldn't have come up with that I'm assuming Oz is his real last name but he's in show business He could have changed that You're really going to keep the name of a famous charlatan That lives behind the curtain and has no real power No it's true All right here is your last quote and it's from one Ringo star I've farted Just thought I'd let you know That was one of the shocking moments from a new 8 hour documentary On what famous band It's the beetle It is The Beatles Get past the new Beatles documentary from Peter Jackson who specializes in The Lord of the Rings movies and other things that are way too long is an exhaustive look at the creation of The Beatles final album and final concert It's amazing It's like 6 hours of them just noodling around and eating dry toast and then Paul suddenly comes up with a song get back out of nowhere and then it's two more hours of noodling I will say this I call bull but I call bull on the documentary because it claims to show everything But we see them drink 9000 cups of tea and never once does Peter Jackson follow them to the bathroom Now we open this thing with remarkable moment when Ringo says I just farted I wanted everybody to know which is very open to him Ringo and here's the thing about Ringo's like yes All he does pretty much in this documentary is he farts that one time but farted in time He was such a reliable farm People dismiss him but you knew that you had Ringo back there farting You'd at least keep the beat I mean listen it just sounded like a regular fart but once George Martin Phil Spector would never talk about a wall of sound You think Yoko Ono will watch it all at once or will she break it up I will say I think the documentary makes a compelling case for how she kept them together because there's a bit where spoiler alert there's a bit where George leaves the band and George leaves the band and then they immediately go into a three minute freakout where Yoko starts singing and starts wailing into the mic And you can just see John gone oh we need to get George back Bill how did Nico do in our quiz Got us off to a very good start Nico you got him all right Congratulations Newton Thank you so much It's been one fourth been here It's wonderful to have you Niko Good luck Take care and enjoy Disney when "Congressman caffeine rice of nassau county on long island. What's your take on. Kathleen rice standing with big pharma on this. I'm sure that's not how you know. I'm sure that's not how she would put it. I'm with big pharma. Don't think that's how she she would put it either. But that's certainly that certainly the the the narrative that is now being driven because she opposes fill in the the energy and commerce committee. It's worth noting than an identical provision. Did clear another committee so it is still currently in the bill But i think it reflects not just that policy disputes. I mean she. She is among the lawmakers was who has endorsed a more moderate plan but i think it reflects this this other element where moderate lawmakers don't want to take votes on things that won't become law this provision there are. There is some concerns that it would violate these strict rules. That we've been talking about that. It would not survive the parliamentarians guidance but also that not enough moderates in the senate will get on board with it either. So why vote on something. That doesn't become law. Why walk that plank if you will. So it's really just this this this very difficult thorny knicks of policy preference but also sort of the political realities ahead and another local part of whose district is also in nassau county. Tom swazi who also represents northeast. Queens is also an issue here. He is standing firm from what i see on his threat to vote. No on the larger package unless it includes reinstatement of the federal tax deduction for all state and local taxes under trump that deduction was capped at ten thousand dollars of state and local taxes. That you can deduct from your federal income tax is swazi out by himself on that. No i think there. There are many lawmakers from the new york. New jersey california delegations the states that have really been impacted by that cap. Who really want to see in it. He is one of the few who has publicly said that he would not support the bill without that in there. But i think we do expect some form of that of that Reform to be in there because it's so widespread. What so. it's supported so much by people in in across the house and in the senate and even though it hasn't been formerly included in the bill yet we have the chairman of the ways and means committee at an mr swazi and bill pascrell of new jersey. Say that they're committed to enacting a law. That would bring that kind of relief. So there stood there so long legislative paths for for this bill and for that that provision to make it. I guess we could point that others like alexandria cossio cortez course who also has part of her district in queens Saying that if you pay more than ten thousand dollars in state and local taxes in a year you're pretty well off and the way the law changed under trump is actually progressive taxation..

"It's time for the last word where jonathan take part is in for lawrence's a much more familiar world for me where i end my show and give it to you because that's we did mornings on sunday mornings. I guess we're going to be doing is warning. Yes right well. Thanks very much alley. Have a good evening it. thanks a lot al. it's about damn time. That's how congressman. Bill pascrell a member of the house ways and means committee described justice department's announcement that the treasury department must turn over six years of donald trump's tax returns to house investigators on the committee the committee. I made the request eight hundred forty nine days ago. The bill bar justice department which basically operated as the donald trump justice department blocked trump's returns from being released despite the fact that the law is absolutely clear that the treasury department xiao turn over any tax document requested by a tax writing committee in the congress. Today merrick garland justice department. Says that the committee's request to see the records is lawful valid and should be fulfilled quote applying the proper degree of deference. Do the committee. We believe that there is ample basis to conclude that it's june twenty twenty one requests for former president trump's tax information would further the committee's principle stated objective of assessing the irs presidential audit program a cleanly legitimate area for congressional inquiry and possible legislation ways and means chairman. Richard neal said this about the decision. As i have maintained for years. The committee's case is very strong in the law is on our side. I am glad the department of justice agrees and that we can move forward and then there's this from house speaker. Nancy pelosi who called the decision. A victory for congressional oversight powers quote access to former president. Trump's tax return is a matter of national security. The american people deserve to know the facts of his troubling conflicts of interest an undermining of our security and democracy as president leading off our discussion. Tonight is congressman. Lloyd doggett of texas. He has the second highest ranking democrat on the house ways and means committee. Doug thank you very much for being here. The immediate question for you is this. When do you get donald. Trump's tax returns not yet but this was an important step in getting Jonathan and it is important to remember how we got to this point today. Donald trump the lied about the his willingness to disclose his tax returns. As the public outcry over that began to intensify. He presented us in the committee a letter a letter from his law firm that there was nothing to look at not noting that that same law firm was named the russia author of the year for years for months at least a the house. Republicans on our committee covered up for him. I made six motions other colleagues made motions. They refused to use a law that grew out of another republican scandal. Almost one hundred years ago. The same law that figured in richard nixon saying i'm not Over his tax deductions and the the law is clear. It requires that the treasury secretary or the irs commissioner of who's been delegated that responsibility shall deliver returns when their request. And what we've had now for much than years is an unwillingness to comply with that very clear law on now that we have this decision It's really question of just. What mr trump's next tactic is to try to hide the evidence that i think will show his tax evasion up congressman target on this this question of the handing over the returns when they are requested. Here's something from the doj decision where it says. The june twenty twenty one request seeks the same categories of information as the april twenty nineteen requests. But it covers each of the tax years twenty fifteen to twenty twenty whereas the april twenty nine thousand nine requests asked for tax information for tax years two thousand thirteen through twenty eighteen. My question to you is why the change in years requested. Why is that significant. Well i think it was just an updating of the prior request to bring it up to date actually thinks the request and we provided for this in the for the people act should cover ten years But the main point is that the committee has crafted a narrow legislative request and not as to be able to ensure that the audit that president trump kept using excuse is being conducted properly and not the result of his manipulation or intimidation of the internal revenue service. So chairman neil has used that as the reason for getting these returns he also in this updated request he filed in june mentions the very real possibility of foreign entanglements. We know the saudi money. The russian money that appeared to pour into some of mr trump's sub accounts and effect on legislation in congress that relates to taxes. So we have a good basis for getting it. It just a question now. With a court case pending of whether trump comes up with yet more excuses perhaps files on the junction. Try to block. What will eventually nap when this clearer. Law is implemented but which he is determined to delay as long as possible. I don't believe any president has ever tried so hard to hide so much. There is much as stake here. It's really important that we get to separation once we have it. That's not a guarantee that remains public in fact it would be a criminal offense if i were to disclose that information prematurely. It will be a matter of our committee looking at the documents in private. I'm sure they'll be a substantial amount of him and determining in a report whether any of this should be made public after we see what's there and how soon would that be well. It.

"And i just got to say talk about like world. Historical cowardice from william bar. William more knows what the guys up to william bar could have gone public but he leaves rights and utterly like preposterous encomium to the greatness of donald trump knowing full well the man is attempting a coup essentially in the moment and then just hands over the job of protecting american democracies from said khuda. Jeffrey rosen and pieces out work buddy. Yeah and it's it. You know up until the sycophantic resignation letter and and him leaving you know he did actually stand up to trump on this one issue. He was his lackey accomplice for two years. But on this issue he said there was no evidence of election fraud and that did set the stage. I think for. Jeffrey rosen to be able to push back a little bit so i. I am no fan of bill bar but i actually think on this topic. Other than advocating the throne. Yes speak he did resist. That's true and maybe it's because i'm a journalist and because i have a television show that this occurs to me and it doesn't occur to functionaries department says but like no one goes public. Everyone just plays a good soldier and doesn't say anything the guys rattling the cage trying to overturn election for the love of god say something publicly that just me daniel goldman thank you very much appreciate it. Donald trump to campaigns earned tire presidency keeping his tax returns hidden. Today we found out the game of keep away may finally be over decision to withhold. Donald trump's tax returns from house. Democrats has been reversed by the garland justice department and so the man's taxes must be released congress. What happens when they get them. Does this mean the public will get to see them. And why is this happening now. Don't go anywhere that's coming up next. Can you give us any insight into what the real reason is that. The president has refused to release his tax returns statements that he had said to me that what he didn't want to have an entire group of think tanks that our tax experts run through his tax return and start ripping it to pieces and then he'll end up in an audit and until ultimately have tax deductible consequences penalties and so on now. Wrong not wrong. Donald trump managed to keep his tax returns secret his entire time in office which was no small feat. Democrats have been trying to access them for years. Twenty seventeen congressman bill pascrell of new jersey. Ask the chairman of the tax writing house ways and means committee to formally request ten years of trump's tax returns. The chairman was republican. You shut down the upper where republicans lost control the house for your later. Congressman richard neal. A democrat from massachusetts became chair of that committee giving him legal authority under statute to formally request trump's tax returns and a few months after being sworn in. He knows he would be doing just that. The irs miss the deadline to hand them over. Neil issued subpoenas to both the treasury department in the irs. When that didn't work he sued then in september. Two thousand nine hundred and haton district attorney sivan's got into the act subpoenaing. Trump's accounting firm for eight years of attackers trump took that matter always supreme court while continuing to challenge the oversight powers the house ways and means committee and he lost the election shortly after he lost a supreme court case in february. This year. The supreme court allowed manhattan prosecutors to obtain trump's taxes. They haven't early this month. Trump's company and its top money man were charged of course with tax fraud in manhattan court today however the ways and means committee finally got some movement on their years. Long quest the justice department on america arlen said that trump's tax returns must be released to congress which means soon they could potentially even be made public betcha. Woodrow's swan national political reporter for politico has been tracking these developments and she joins me now so betsy minor standing there was a an opinion from the kind of it's kind of like the supreme court inside the justice the office legal counsel c which gives a legal direction that basically that office overturned previous set guidance that was offered during the trump administration is that right. That's right when trump's lawyers were in charge of the office of legal counsel bay said that members of congress were acting in bad faith even though congress claims to have a legitimate legislative purpose they actually just one of the tax returns to embarrass trump. Therefore treasury didn't have to give them to congress that was the trump. Doj's argument now that it's biden's lawyers who are running doj including this office of legal counsel. What they've said is look even if some members of congress are hoping that the president will be embarrassed by the contents of his tax returns. Hard to imagine why he would be. Maybe some of them are hoping that what what doj says even if they are hoping that it's not germane to the question of whether or not congress actually has a legitimate legislative reason to reach for these tax returns and doj the llc within the justice department confirmed that yes they do have a legitimate legislative reason. One really fun piece of history with all the good. That's cited in the doj opinion. Is that the reason. Congress got the power to pick individual people's tax returns. The reasons specifically this committee did is because of bribery corruption scandal. The law was changed in nineteen twenty four because congressional investigators during the teapot dome scandal. Which involved bribery belt that they were getting stiff armed by the irs. They carry that investigation out. They changed the law and the first time. A member of president's cabinet went to prison was the result of that scandal. So there's a pretty direct through line from the reason. Congress has this power to what they're trying to do with the power today. Yeah the i always found the justifications on the other side fairly tortured that they had to do with that congress's acting in bad faith. There had to be this legislative intent. It always seemed obvious to me..

Biden expected to visit Georgia in push to boost Ossoff, Warnock
"Senate control is still up for grabs as you know. Democrats will have to win both runoffs in georgia to take control of the senate. Here's what the president-elect told me about the importance of senate control back in february. I think i'm more ready to be able to defeat. Donald trump and equally importantly george elect a democratic senate. It's not gonna be enough just to beat him. We have to change the senate in order to get things done. Wasn't he right. Then you know one. Former obama official told dan balls to the washington. Post is the difference between having a transformational president versus having to not negotiate everything with a republican senate. Well those two senate seats georgia is important. And we're going to do everything we can to help. Those two cats great candidates in georgia helped them win. We've already move people who were working on the bike. Campaign on the recounts down there over to be supportive in the field work for our two candidates down there and i expect you'll see the president-elect travel down there before election day so it's very very important to win those seats the thing the reality of course georgia's that even if we win them. Both and i think we will win the both. I think both candidates doing a great job. We're going to have a closely divided senate kind of under any scenario and i think one challenge that president-elect taken on is trying to work with members of both parties to build consensus for action on things like economic relief like climate change like dealing with our other crises are racism crisis the challenge of fixing our immigration laws and of course obviously fighting covid so We're gonna have a closely divided. Senate whatever happens in. Georgia obviously ruined a win. Those seats i really want to see. Chuck schumer be the next majority leader in the us. Senate i think he and the president-elect have a great relationship. But i know they have a great relationship but however that comes out we are going to deliver for the american people. And that's the mission. Look i think that voters sent a clear sign in twenty twenty and the sign they sent was the want to see things get done. They want action on cove. The economy climate healthcare bringing down health. Care costs wants the action on all of that. We're going deal with whatever lineup. We're faced with in washington to get that done. It would be better if that light was a democratic senate. But if unfortunately i think. I don't think this will happen. But if we were to lose those seats in georgia we're gonna move forward with whatever senate gets elected. There's going to be some tension between getting unity. Getting things done working with republicans in investigating any wrongdoing that occurred during the trump administration. The vice president's been reported as express a preference that he has is presence he consumed by trump investigations that has raised some concerns about among some democrats including congressman. Bill pascrell. Who had this to say this week. Failure to hold financial and political wrongdoing accountable in the past has invited greater malfeasance by bad actors. A repeat of those failures and twenty twenty one further emboldens criminality by our national leaders and continues america down the path of lawlessness and authoritarianism. There must be accountability. How do you balance moving forward with getting accountability. Well let's be clear george. The president-elect spoke about this many times the campaign and what he made it clear that joe biden is not going to tell the justice department who to investigate or who not to investigate. That's what we saw the past four years. The president tampering with the justice department. Egging on investigation so and so forth. He's gonna pick an excellent attorney. General an independent justice department and that department will make decisions independently free of politics free in either direction as to how to enforce the laws. That's the way it should be. That's the way it's always been. That's the way it needs to be if we're going to have the kind of rule of law that so important in our country we're gonna see attorney general state department of treasury. Pick this week. What what. I can confirm george is that you're going to see the first of the president-elect's cabinet appointments on tuesday of this week Meeting the pace Beating in fact the pace that was set by the obama biden transition Beating the pace set by the trump transition So you're going to see. The first cabinet picks this tuesday. But if you wanna know what cabinet agencies they are a who's going to be in those cabinet agencies you'll have to wait for the president-elect to say that Himself on tuesday. I knew you were gonna tell me who it was. I was hoping you might tell me which ones thank you well. We watching claim we want people to to george.

Trump Asserts Executive Privilege Over Mueller Report as Democrats Mull Impeachment
"President Trump's invoking executive privilege over the full Mullah report is prompting more Democrats to say impeachment is on the table. Democrats say it's not about removing Trump from office. But impeachment might be the only way to get what they want in their investigations NPR's. Susan Davis has more if Democrats ultimately begin impeachment proceedings against President Trump this week will be remembered as one of the turning points. This is when formerly reluctant Democrats like, Missouri. Congressman Emanuel cleaver started talking more like this. A won't be the last person standing against impeachment and now and squatting White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders made clear the president will not budge on his executive privilege claim to block access to the full Muller report. This is fully consistent with that precedent. And it's fully consistent with the president actually upholding the law. So now Democrats like Arizona congressman role GRA Halbe. Say impeachment is taking on a new urgency. I think you'd have to need impeachment as a mechanism to get what we want Democrats are warming to the idea of beginning impeachment proceedings. If it's not just about removing Trump from office, New Jersey Democrat Bill Pascrell says it's also a legal proceeding in an official impeachment inquiry, strengthens Democrats hands to secure cooperation and documents from the administration, the more people will look at peach mint, then as a way to get the president. But as plus. Begins to review what we know needs to be reviewed speaker Nancy Pelosi continues to urge a cautious approach impeachment is one of the most divisive things that you can do it dividing country and less you really have your case with great clarity for the American people. Most Democrats are still hesitant to publicly embrace impeachment. But they're not ruling it out either. Here's California's Linda Sanchez.
