Cowboys to move on without Jason Garrett

"Jason Garrett's time up as coach of the Dallas Cowboys Edward a reporting Jerry Stephen Jones have decided coach will not be part of the organization moving forward on Friday and paid Simmons on why this process lasted so long after the season to other Jerry and Stephen Jones have moved slowly out of respect for Jason Garrett you know they have a long history with him as a backup quarterback you to this is that coach a head coach's father was in the organization when Jerry bapa team as a scout and they finally concluded that phase of this process and that's going to end with Jason Garrett not being a part of the organization beyond his expiring contract and when exactly they make that announcement I thought sure what I've been told soon and that the next phase will have them moving into the process of interviewing candidates in the battle begin quickly after phase one is totally finished off yes was contract set to expire January fourteenth status with the team at issue since last February the cowboys didn't give a contract extension they missed the playoffs in twenty nineteen finish eight neighbor the four time in his tenure as coach Keyshawn Johnson on the job candidates and Jerry Jones himself he was on sports and we stand ready to make a decision on it there was the eight their long term in the obvious would clearly felt that their work you say while they waited till Thursday well the food that just won't really it just is so you kind of say okay take a deep breath we get back to the facilities we talk about a little bit we think about we pondered overnight we need or Thursday we meet on Tuesday we meet on Wednesday we have a conversation and we finally so you know women the best thing for us to do if not give the public what they looking for what they looking for me to do is be extremely mad and walk out of there on Sunday night if fire you on the tarmac so instead of doing that this call wait a couple days are you playing for the cowboys you're familiar with Jerry Jones and and and his thinking all what happens next now in this search for the next cowboys head coach I think a guy like Mike Zimmer Minnesota Vikings head coach could potentially be a candidate you say how could that be well I I II coach there in the deepest corner along try defensive coordinator for Jerry Jones is the bill Parcells fact either stay here they know what they're getting in that particular coach but also there's a young officer coordinator in cabin step band he this sitting there in Minnesota the Minnesota Vikings don't want to part ways with him they don't want him all of a sudden start to get interviews and become a category another team so I would be surprised if somehow might dimmer wind up being the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys in the cabinet she takes over as the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings so a lot of story lines this call come about here over the next with date but I think this time around you will get the head coaching job right where the coach may be season one more before we go do you think that at this point Jerry Jones is ready to surrender more control to a head coach now then he has been willing to in the past as bill Parcells left and and I want to turn this on your stamina I am right now status is not a defense Jerry Jones was some what he is and even as well as we clay as well as Jerry junior what is your you Jones gone wrong with that organization other than the head coaching hire that's a very good question that's very good everybody everybody everybody said here you're you're here the one on that team thank you for calling the latter team for the National Football League I would I would argue and say that their top five channels it is four tally dole is a National Football League the problem is that head coach because you're you're not holding the plate yeah well that gives the player is a free pass for having innate need season the talent on the field didn't win enough games he and Garrett will finish as the second longest tenured and second most winningest coach in team history Tom Landry a record of eighty five and sixty seven the wonders to playoff games unable to get past the divisional round Mike wells Myron Medcalf on Freddie Fitzsimmons the Dallas Cowboys there you know they draw attention but the the the days of being America's team and wanted to be part of what is age and it's not the same anymore it is not the same strictly because of what you have to deal with away from just coaching of football team is not simply you know put together a strong staff the coaster brakes of Amari Cooper Ezekiel Elliott and dak Prescott it's also having the answer constant questions from your boss the owner Jerry Jones deck could become a headache when you're you can't simply just focus on the task of putting your team in the proper position the try to have success there's a side show that comes with it and some people are built or not built to be able to deal with that so you got to find the right coach who is not only a great Exynos guy but somebody who's mentally strong enough to handle the constant you know looking over the shoulders and the pestering of your boss meddling in the inside of things wonder why things are not going well or to give us suggestions on what you should be doing that's not something easy that everybody can handle that type of situation well it and not everybody wants it and that's why I think a lot of these cultures your Matt rules related rallies urban Meyer's why except that to me if you're not going to modernize the structure of your organization so that your owner can do what every other owner does and take a backseat and not be this forward facing figure who's hosting its own press conferences after the game sometimes undermining the head coach then then how can you expect to attract a great candidate bomb out rule no one eight I'm leaving Baylor I got a chance to build something there if I'm leak in Raleigh I'm in Oklahoma and every year I get a chance to go to the college football playoff leave in Oklahoma where I can coach for another decade at least about continue to succeed ever murmur Meyer I'm not leaving LA or on the TV analyst making good money watching a lot of football injuries bouncing around the country see a lot of teams to go to Dallas where I've got a deal with Jerry that's why I think it's going to be difficult if Jerry Jones wants to continue to be Jerry Jones I don't think Mike he's going to end up with any of the top candidates identifying potential replacements Bobby carpenter and fox college football reporter Bruce Feldman gas on Freddie impede Simmons Stephen Jones Jerry Jones offered that coaching job urban Meyer she would say I think that's a hard job to say no urban probably wouldn't be needing to be for another year is that all you but who knows enough the big job at the glamorous job and remember the nose you know damn owns his courage and damn ongoing expound acted it all back thank god yeah I was supposed to do the oil itself journal part of mine and to buy that it was offered so you're going to want to meet your need to guide it was a proven track record we've done it before who's been in the playoffs the only guy that I look at the newest hires cycle that's really available is Mike McCarthy and it's free thank god I'm not that I'm not the biggest Mike McCarthy stand the world but he's the only guy that it holds no one Barty and that is the only thing that Jerry Jones once he is getting older is that you know you if you spend more time on this earth that he's going to spend has the last was starving if you get that oracle Marty troche with them of the order would love to put it in there Mike you've done that you chose to leave and you've been in the playoffs he's done a good job that would be my selection I don't know if they don't know what it does do checks all

Packers' win over Vikings

"Bit about the Packers and Vikings the game last night in a victory for Green Bay as they win the NFC north a six time that our Rogers is quarterback the Green Bay Packers to an NFC north title there twelve win team but they're not getting the respect that they deserve or is it a case of you look at those twelve victories bogus and say I know they're twelve wins but you know are they really that good of a football team you are a ball bill Parcells used to say you are what your record is so the Packers of one twelve of the fifteen games that they play this year they've got one to go I mean that's pretty darn good when you think about it and they've got an opportunity to be the number one seed in the NFC they win and the forty Niners lose our they're gonna be the number one seed so all in all all avenues will go through Lambeau field for the Green Bay Packers yeah which is not where you want to play in January slash you know we're December slash January but I just I don't be it's fits all that both the this game last late leaves us wondering about both of these teams right what what how good actually the Vikings and how good actually are the Packers and I I think the easy thing is to say man the Packers play defense last night and they ran the football if they can do those two things consistently here the next couple weeks they're gonna be a tough out but I I I still in stock on Aaron Rodgers because I went into that game paying close attention to him I'd read it I guess it was last week an article about how there been a developing split between Rogers early and late in games and the Packers are a team that kind of script to be how they're gonna start a game they have the feel they can have their first like ten or fifteen please planned out and once Rogers huddled recently had a left that kind of scripted portion the game plan all of their production had kind of dwindle it'll be like they were they were scoring points early in the struggling late I want to see the pattern continued last night and he never really got it going last night no and the three turnovers early and you want the point we made almost the beginning of the show back in our number one and you know I I I want to believe in them I will especially playing at home in limbo but I I know if if he can't throw it and they can't catch it and they can't score points that way I I can't trust the defense enough against San Francisco or New Orleans we're Seattle your ticket to get them through a game anywhere so they've got to me ask you this is our Jones good enough to carry the team offense I don't think so you don't think so I I think young with what you saw last night a hundred fifty four yards on the ground he's had an unbelievable year the albums have been an issue right but you know catching it and run it out of the backfield Jones has been an absolute start for the Packers could not be less about Rogers could be less about his brilliance of a signal caller and more about running the football winning at the point of attack in a winning time of possession getting after the quarterback they can certainly do that defensively but offense of Lee can be less about Rogers pulling a miracle out of his rear end and could it be more about Aaron Jones basically wrote it down your throat hit list yeah I get it its it's there's two distinct ways to look at it that this is that this is good news that they actually have a complimentary Aaron Rodgers throwing the field for a long time they haven't had a good game and he was able to throw it have success throwing it despite no running game I just I still ng feel that they need that passing attack to be at maybe dynamic is asking too much based on the weapons around with us and who we throw the football to but I still think they just need more than they've gotten over the last month or so that's fair and and listen I I don't I don't necessarily disagree with that especially in this kind of a league especially the fact that neither you or I can really trust that Packers defense even after what we witnessed last night but let me ask the question this way is it a case of not having the weapons around him or is it a case of a regression in the quarterback I don't think if any regression is there I don't think that it's anything more than that and kind of the normal regression you've had you'd have to be at this point of your career I don't I don't think he's falling off more like in any significant way he just wanted me because he is always you throw devante Adams right Jimmy Graham is a what it once was but should be great still good target yeah all right and although it it sound I don't know if it's Jimmy Graham I don't know if its defenses I don't know if it's a Rogers thing but but grant as we get targets anymore no it is not getting the target but it but you would we would both agree that Jimmy Graham can if the boss coming his way Jimmy grams gonna make the reception I like Geronimo Alison I like don't think Rogers does no I I I but that's what that's also a problem to where you do limit yourself offense of Lee if you're targeting one player sixteen times right over the course of the game I mean that's where you could look at the regression maybe not the physical regression but maybe it's the mental regression of Allah Rogers where he is too too much of a lean toward one player and maybe that's where it's hurting the offense where he's not spreading the football around enough to where he's building up the confidence of young players rather because while did our Rogers bogus she was never got it yeah I looked at the library not being totally a product of guys around him I don't I Rogers guy that you know you me and it Palade a chap could be the wide receivers and our Rogers of find a way to get the football you're still less and less of that as he

"Win how much of bill Parcells was his secondary coach slash defensive coordinators lashes as then head coach bill Belichick well it's it's hard to separate the two right you know it's it's it's it's it's hard to separate those two how much of ourselves successful do rebel Jack and vice versa as it is now to separate ballots check from Brady or or Belichick and Brady in crown it's really difficult to determine who's responsible for the success you know Parcells gave Bella check opportunity he also gave a responsibility and Bella checked thrived under that and that also allowed you know ourselves to focus in other areas and you know what check did a pretty good job not just being a coach but he saw how Parcells could controlled media and keep the heat off his players and even though he doesn't have a dramatically different way I think about what check took one lesson from bill Parcells it was that he learned how to control the media because when he had his first head coaching stint in Cleveland the media destroyed he didn't know how to control them he finally learned how he learned how to do in a very different way than ourselves but he learned how to control the story and that's really important because once the story gets going bad you're on your way out were your not up to the job then that often just runs wild and can drive guys out of the league and he was able to stop that you know we had one bad year its first year they were six and ten but after that he was he was able to control the narrative talking with glanced out.

Aaron Rodgers 'Glad' Packers' Joint Practices with Texans Over

"Go to the n._f._l. Let's start this in green bay. Packers and new head coach matt leflore and aaron rodgers not on the same page early in camp. The coach likes can't likes camp likes working out with other teams. Here's what aaron rodgers said said about doing a joint practice with texans. I wouldn't mind if they didn't do it for another fourteen years and then he said that the offensive work is of great value because schematically. There's not a lot there and he doesn't like the risk of injury. Is this just one of those things or is this a real problem between rogers and the floor. Take it or shake it. Take it real problems. Take take take it though she sleep but i think when you think when you think about what i said the other day about out joint practices. It's a no no. No one wants to do that but coaches then only ones you. There's there's nothing to gain from it. The iran tell you 'cause. Let's coaches are stupid. He just do stuff. They just day or stupid. I told you this the other day and raja's comes out and basically backs up exactly exactly what i'll say it. No one wants to do that. You risk injury. You're getting no real work at all and it is going to be a power struggle for this young head head coach and matlock floor in aaron rodgers. It's going to be a power struggle in math going to have to cave in or else. He's going to get fire yeah. I was just gonna say if you're a brand new head coach jay first time head coach and all of a sudden you gotta go coach your first team as the head guy that's one thing you've got to be the head coach of the green bay packers with a hall of fame quarterback. Who's in the meat prime of his career. That's a totally different thing different. Yeah it's different because ann rogers is also different. He's so cerebral. He's so questions every think think anyway. He's not just gonna go to get him on like other. Q._b.'s wills so you know skiing on the walls though skin on the wall. What do you mean it meaning matlock floor. Oh if you if you were dealing dealing with coach that came in and mike shanahan or bill parcells done something that has some skin on the wall the aaron rodgers with baal down where if there's a guy like sean mcvay say the world gets up into shining face their push mcvay a smart enough to realize that i need him to produce some let him do what he needs to do. If he's doing what he needs to do in his positive then we're gonna be okay and if it's negative it's gonna follow him. I've done everything to make him a better player. I'll keep my job. Butler does it, leads 76ers past Raptors to force Game 7

"Right. So last night we watched the Sixers and blazers both force game seven and watching the Sixers game last night. I think it's it's clear to everybody. Joel Embiid had a big game plus forty which you never see me come plus forty for game him in Michael Scott. That's what she said. Oh, it had big the big plus minus his last night, but watching this game and actually seeing how this is evolved over the course of the past few weeks, a couple of months is that while Joel Embiid, and Ben Simmons clearly are the more talented players. Jimmy Butler is the MVP this team. I mean, this is what the what he does enable to cover up for the faults of the other guys Ben Simmons not able to jump shot. Joel Embiid taking nights off. He's a playoff guy. He's a playoff guy. That's gonna take bigshots make big plays. And you look at the the end of this first half the sequence where he hits the jumper with nine seconds left thirteen point lead. All right. The raptors come down for the last shot strips Kawai. Goes in for a layup where many players with looked up at the clock and said, oh, I got it. Stop and take a jumper with one point five seconds left. Instead of going to go to the Cup in with less than a second left. They're up by fifteen. The place is going crazy teammates jumping on top. He's got his hands up. Come on. He's that special kind of guy that can grab a team and say, okay, this moment is not too big. For me. We need a basket. I'll be able to do it not somebody that can be around team more than two or three years because we've seen a brace of as he is. But he's kind of like the the Bill Parcells of players, right? Can be around for a couple of years. And then I have to go someplace else, but he is like he is everything this team

"So it's not like you're getting Murray or Haskins, and whether or not you're hire them, look in all likelihood, they probably have a higher grade on Josh Rosen coming out of college to begin with then Murray and. Askins a lot of people. Do Tom mcshea said if he was in this draft he would be the number one pick going back to the evaluation last year in terms of the quarterbacks you may not be the number one overall pick. But you get what I'm saying in terms of the quarterbacks he would be the highest rate of guy. So if you're a Washington, you're thinking, okay, we're not going to guarantee that we're going to get the first the second overall pick next year if we actually have an opportunity to get a franchise caliber quarterback this year. Yeah. You gotta give a first round pick. And you can't be outbid by team say like the chargers that doesn't need a quarterback right now. Or it seemed like say the New England Patriots, right? The patriots could get in the sweepstakes for Josh Rosen. I talked about the fact that rivers is in aging. Remember Brady's forty one. He's got to be playing in his forty two year old season. If Bill Belichick remember in two thousand fourteen Bill Belichick drafted Jimmy Garoppolo to replace Brady. If Bella check sees a window to find his replacement. You could certainly see Bill Belichick making that deal. So if you're Washington, you gotta make sure you offer the most to get your franchise quarterback of the future in there. If you believe Josh Rosen is that and I. Also, look at it from the patriots perspective this would rejuvenate Bill Belichick because don't you think there's a part of Bill Belichick because at the beginning. It was kind of about Bill chicks defense and all this different type of stuff. But the patriots for the better part of fifteen years. It's been about Tom Brady, right? That's what it's about. It's mad about Tom Brady now. Ballot. Check we all acknowledge the game plans that he had in terms of the Super Bowl game against the Rams and the AFC championship game against the chiefs where he held Pat Mahomes two zero points in the first half. That's how they won the game. He just couldn't catch up in the second half. He almost did he got to overtime, but the patriots won the coin toss. But nonetheless, when I look at it from the patriots perspective and Bill Belichick in particular. Don't you think there's a part of Bill Belichick considering the competitor? That this guy is think there's a part of Bill Belichick that would say, you know, what I kind of like to win one after Tom leaves? You know what I mean? I'd like to do it with another quarterback too. Because a lot of shoved down people's throats to be like fine. I I don't need Brady. I can do it on my own, right? Just to kind of prove it's everybody else. A guy that's going to go down as one of the best. If not the best coach in the history of the NFL may feel the need to prove how good he is. Well, don't you think? That's why these guys that are the ultimate competitors. In sports. They need to challenge themselves in some sense. Right. Like, Michael Jordan used to make things up that the other team would say about him. Right. Tom Brady is still upset with the fact that he was taken in the six round, right? So if you're Bill Belichick, and you see a challenge like what else are you going to do? You're just going to hang around and going your boat all the time. Like, this is what you do if you're Bill Belichick. It's not like he's like Bill Parcells Bill Parcells remember what he did he transitioned into a front office guy, which he sucked at Bella. Check already runs a front office. You think he's gonna give up the hands on approach is? Well, not to mention the fact. If you look at who's on his coaching staff right now two of his kids. So he could stay long enough around to where at one point one of his kids is qualified enough at the end of his run if he stays for another five to six years that one of his kids could actually take over the franchise. So he keeps it kind of like a family business. So that could be another thing that motivates them. So if he has a chance to pick up the next guy after Brady, I guarantee you especially considering that he could come at a discounted price where it's like well hold on the patriots can get their next franchise quarterback without actually having to draft him. They just have to give up a pick. Can you imagine how much that would piss off the rest of the NFL that would be absolutely incredible? All right before we go to one thing that has really aggravated me. It is really aggravating me appointed next radio and ESPN radio. This is the gold standard with my trout hanging out with the angels for likely the rest of his career now instill in my mind, not dude. As one of these superstars in sports. You've got the largest professional sports contract. Paid like a superstar. He's a future hall of Famer already. He's the best baseball player going right now. But for stone them against superstar is not just what you're doing on the field. It's where you are on marketing dollars in -dorsements and Mike trout does not fall into the superstar category. So in baseball who is Bryce Harper is there, and you can stop the listerine. That's the thing. How many are there for baseball rice Harper? Another one. There is one Mike trout's on that for me. Ex-Steelers OC Bruce Arians says Antonio Brown isn't same player Pittsburgh drafted

"Of Antonio Brown. And he was the offense coordinator at one point in time before leaving Pittsburgh. And then joining the staff of Chuck Pagano in Indianapolis, and then becoming the colts interim coach as he battled cancer Picado dead and successfully thanked out and it became the Arizona Cardinals head coach. And now as the town. Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach. And that is Bruce Arians who said that he would not be interested in in Antonio Brown that he's too much of a diva. Antonio Brown is is not the same player. That the Pittsburgh Steelers drafted not physically we're talking about. Now. We're talking about everything else that comes along with Antonio Brown. Besides his ability to help you out and special teams and catch the football as an NFL wide receiver. Yeah. You know, Arians, basically said he's heard a lot of stories about as recent how he is speaking of Antonio Brown. And he said he plays as hot as anybody on Sunday. He practice really hard to. But you know, he's he's basically said as a paraphrasing. He's got him. He totally Brown's gotta make better decisions off the field as far as his punctuality and stuff like being being on time and whatnot. That's we said, so it's pretty interesting new head coach, you know, you've been in the broadcast booth for a year your new head coach of the box. This guy's a Steeler kinda. And I honestly coached them. It's you know, it's interesting to hear him say that about him. So it doesn't sound like Brown be going to Tampa Bay anytime soon. No. It doesn't sound like that. And that's the concern. I mean, you know, you can listen to every former NFL player, whether it be Jerry Rice and others say that he wants to be a San Francisco forty nine or that's great. I may it's great. And I do we both are in agreement TASR that Antonio Brown's gonna get traded this off season by the Pittsburgh Steelers. OB fascinating the team that he does go to am. I telling you that he's a losing player. Antonio Brown can help you in football games. But I will say that there's a lot of headaches now Brown and distractions. Yeah. Great point that Antonio Brown brings to the table that I don't know if there's a lot of NFL head coaches that are going to go out and look to embrace it. I really do. And that's the issue. I have with Brown is I don't want to deal with the nonsense. I really don't as Aaron said, you know, there's the little things that he doesn't do shop to shop to practice on time show up to meetings on time. You know, you're asked to run a hot return a walk-through run the run the hot read. What are you? What are you doing here? I mean, come on. Exactly nervous. I understand what you thought. I was going. I remember where it was funny. I mean, honestly, I it's not that difficult to it's not that difficult for Antonio Brown to handle his responsibilities. Yeah. I completely agree. I've never heard that before I was refunded. Agree with you to moves by. Yeah. Yeah. It was great. Yeah. Man. You know, I think you're going to get some coaches that are that will some teams that will wanna take that chance because how talented these days. We've all in all careers separately. You and I coming up in in all world separately. Right. I'll separate worlds. I'm sure you've come across the state me. All you've heard of guys that you may be going to do business. What guys or girls that you're going to do business? What that you've heard a lot of negativity about. And what's the first thing you said yourself? Well, I okay. This person's talented. I'm going to judge them for once. I get to know them. You give them that. You know what? I mean. I, you know, my wife always taught my son that you might hear things about someone judge them. I from how you judge them. Okay. Take defamation here. But a lot of times it could be hearsay on the advice. It is with this guy here. It's been a like him himself. He's combustible. He's tweeting stuff. Meaning it's Brown. He's been doing a lot of stuff. He's creating he's adding a ton of gasoline to these little fires that war with the Steelers in Hammond Tomlin. So if you're another coach, my point is that I do think some of the coaches or a coach will say, okay. This guy's really talented. He's a superstar. He's going to put as we going to put people to seats in the building. Okay. And and these stadiums role big he's a draw. He's going to draw people. He's a star. I so we've heard all this bad stuff about them. Just like Erin said, I've heard the stories a younger coach hypothetically might say. Well, I wanna to take that chance. I've heard the stories too. But I'm going to judge Antonio foot for what what I see we're going to take a chance on him. And that's what then you gotta hope for the best because he's gonna end up somewhere. Most you know, he's just too damn. And that's a fair way to fair way to look at it by also think that if you're having issues with a player friendly coach, Mike Tomlin, see, I I think there are guys that can't work and play for Bill Belichick. I think there are guys that can't work and play for other disciplinarians like a go back a couple years go back years ago. Bill Parcells right there. There are guys it just it just doesn't work. Now, if you can't play for a guy like Mike Tomlin, who's bent over backwards to placate you over the course of your career as you've changed with the success as your personality is changed with the money. All of that is well deserved because it's earned. I'm not talking about his personality all the money that comes his way. Tasr? I also have to look at that. Same of you have issues with Mike Tomlin, what the hell are you gonna do here? Yeah. Yeah. I mean, Mike cobblers a really is he's apprentice coach player friendly code. But there will he will be playing in the National Football League next year, you'll be making seventeen eighteen million dollars a year. God bless, but there's there's a lot. There are other guys as Bruce Arians said, I think there are a number coaches to say, I don't want daddy. Deal with that. I don't want that toxic person in your locker room. That's what you don't want. You know, you don't want that. Like, I'm a bills fan as you guys know, and I I love all young quarterback. And if we gotta Antonio Brown. I think that'd be amazing. Be awesome. But I would worry that he would like inadvertently mess. What the Josh out? I would worry about that. And I think that's a fair fair concern. But I think that a lot is coaches will judge him. For what they think and and meet with him Suez heads out, and let's just I just play a little bit on Antonio Brown side. He's been with the same organization right out of college. Right. So seven eight years, whatever it is sometimes difficult to paint. Sometimes you you'll be in better behavior. When rental the people a change of change of environment sometimes could help, and maybe that's what he needs, and maybe things will change. And may maybe

Should Jason Garrett Be on the Hot Seat After Loss to Rams?

"Jason Garrett is on the hot seat of very interesting moment for him at an interesting moment for Jerry Jones. Garrett fits into that Cowboys ecosystem very well. He can play the quieter subdued coach and fit in and slide into Jerry Jones. He can allow Jerry Jones to be he will do what they want Stephen. And Jerry want him to do. He does that very very well, but his track record isn't good Torello is calling for his head. So I think it's a question. Mark the biggest question I have the really as a Cowboys fan. I would not really mind senior. I just don't know whom you replace him with now there aren't a lot of options left. And when you look at the new coaches that have just taken jobs, it there's not a name that just jumps out of you. There's not an Andy Reid to go grab right now. The best name I guess would make McCarthy. Mike McCarthy let go of the Packers. But of course, he's a guy who ran into some roadblocks of the Packers had a great quarterback in Aaron Rodgers. And somehow it wasn't all working there. So there question marks about any coach you destroy into replace Jason Garrett. Well, I would say immigrants to Mike McCarthy thinks is that. That may give the Jones family a little bit of pause because you're bringing in sort of a Bill Parcells type of not quite that intense personality. But when he he's gonna want to run things he's not gonna wanna things run through him. He's he's going to be the coach. And that's what it would be the other thing is that in Green Bay. They didn't have the pieces around Aaron Rodgers that Dak now has you know, I really credit Stephen Jones for the drafts that he has had ever since really Johnny Manziel draft here when that's Jerry really really wanted. And instead they picked up Zack Martin has been the focal point of that amazing offensive line, and they have had fantastic drafts since then. And then they made that bold trade for Amari Cooper, which everyone thought they were crazy. Gosh, you're giving up a first rounder for Amari Cooper. Hello eight and two since Amari Cooper came on. So I love what Stephen Jones is doing and I credit Jerry for allowing him to do his job. He's doing a great job. Well, and I'm going to give some credit to will McKay. The director of player personnel. Because I think he's the one who really does the scouting and sets the board stack ranks to players and sets them up for the draft. Then of course, Stephen Jones brings the discipline to stick to the board to listen to them, right? He's Stephen will go with what McKay has laid out for him and stand up his dad if a dad wants to do a flashy pick one of the things that sort of interesting, but the Cowboys draft over the last four to five years is they often or going a little bit against the grain, position wise. So when they take an often sublime it in the first round, that's not the sexy pick and they're generally run on defensive lineman when they took late and bender a linebacker middle. Linebackers are not usually the sexy. In the first round. But think about it. If everyone else is taking a run on defensive ends or running another position. Maybe it's a sexy wide receiver position and your today. Well, the word I three sexiest. But you are right. The linemen do not Jose helped me. I'm whom am I looking at it. I say these things I've got the gloss right before me. Word of the day. It that's true. Okay. We're going to give it to you. I'm my point was is that if they will avoid the sexy of the guy brings his lunch pail to work. If you take the best offensive guard the number one offense of guard on the board as opposed to the fifth defensive end because of the big run on defense. You're less likely to reach. And what often will happen is the number one offense of guard is a better total all around player number five defensive end show or this year Vander at middle linebacker, not as sexy position. There's that word again that you are accurate with that description.

All 12 playoff coaches are tied to Bill Walsh or Parcells

"The head coaches in the playoffs that season come from the coaching. Trees of other Bill Walsh for Bill Parcells Abella check. Anthony Lynn, Sean Payton. All coached under Parcells Jason Garrett and Bill O'Brien are further down the Parcells coaching tape. But they all come from the Bill Parcells coaching tree. And that means the other seven come from the Bill Walsh coaching tree. Andy Reid coached under Mike Holmgren was Walsh disciple. Four others come directly from Andy. That's John Harbaugh. Matt Nagy Doug Peterson and Frank Reich. So as we prepare to watch these games this weekend and throughout these playoffs. There is still the influence of those two legendary preeminent coaches of the eighties. If you will in Walsh and parcels what what thoughts Trump to your mind? When you see that? Look, I know that Bill walls is someone who is highly highly respected by guys like parcels end by guys like Bill Belichick. He's at the very very top of this whole thing. And they as far as situational football's concern, and as far as really just being able to build an entire football federation. He's set the standard everyone else is trying to follow now. And now is it is pretty cool though to watch kinda how bills people have done how Andy Reed's people were doing. I mean, it's it's really neat. Because really there's only so many things you can do in full. There's only so many formations you can come up with and so many defenses you can run then it just comes down to good play styles. Make fights right and Walsh that the west coast against the smashmouth run the ball in play defense style of ourselves. And if you look at it that still holds true today. Most of the Andy Reid disciples over there. Bill walsh. They're going to get the ball out. Quick. Quick eater intermediate passing game highly rhythmic west coast offense. Then you look at the Bill Parcells disciple disciples, we're going to run the football player action shots down the field and had this big physical defenses that try to beat you up and want to make this game playing the phone booth. You've heard me say this on this show that if the guys that are really good the great coaches right now, and the guys that are going to continue to be one of those eight teams looking for aid coach on finding the guy. Well, I certainly were. And you know, he's he seems to me is old school throwback as they come. And yet he has absolutely gone. With the flow. If you will these days with offenses in what to do and having an old warhorse at quarterback in this day and age where you need one of those young kids on a first contract, it seems he could pay all the other guys around him. What he's been able to do is is truly something else. I'm wondering how how much do you think the experience from Dallas or other experiences playing into all of this? Oh, I think he's you know, he's one of the most tenured coaches in the league now and your experience can do nothing, but help you and I remember having them having discussion with him a few years back that promise championship team. He was going to have to recycle pretty much completely. His quarterback which is fortunate. And that's what he's been able to do. He's been able to put new linemen new defensive players..

Bill Belichick won't put Khalil Mack in Lawrence Taylor's class

"That's happening in forum is because they traded Khalil Mack in. Why are we talking about Khalil Mack? Well, we're not trying to rub it into raiders fans. I wanted to talk about Bill Belichick and what he said about Khalil Mack today. Of course, the bears are playing the patriots on Sunday and Bill Belichick. Ironically, enough won't put cluele MAC in the same classes Lawrence Taylor. Well, of course, not Lawrence Taylor is one of the three greatest defensive players in NFL history. He might be the greatest defensive player in NFL history. Khalil Mack has a long, and I mean, a long way to go before he can even be remotely compared to Lawrence sale. You know, Lawrence Taylor has also Super Bowl rings rings, plural. So for Khalil Mack. Sure. Is he a terrific player right now in the NFL? Absolutely. Is he one of the top three or four players on defense in the league right now. Absolutely. Should he be murmured in the same sentences Lawrence Taylor? Oh, hell, no. And of course, Bill Belichick was the D coordinator for all those teams in New York with the giants. So of course, he has a special affinity for for Lawrence Taylor. He helped get the guy's career off the ground. And you know, part of what may Bill Belichick and attractive head coaching commodity keep in mind, you know, he was under that Bill Parcells coaching tree is players loved a man and Bill Belichick wasn't always this sullen hood wearing callous unfeeling strategists. Meaning it was always a little. I'd say blunt he wasn't always Mr. Congeniality, but he definitely used to show a softer side, a little more, and you know, as you get a little older, and you care less. What people think that tends to happen when you're a head coach, it's a little different. You got to kind of keep your cards close to the vest. Bill Belichick has embodied that. And that's why in an era where today's NFL and really in professional sports. You have to be the players coach, the friend. I this stern disciplinarians don't really make the great anymore. Cowboys' Jason Garrett is now the odds-on favorite to be the first NFL coach fired

"Of Sean Payton. The Princeton Clapper is miscast as an NFL head coach and has nothing in common with self made men like Peyton or even Cowboys owner, Jerry Jones last night Sunday night football, tobacco made it clear Jones. These defy or gear. The Cowboys toss away a winnable role game to the Texans due to horrendous coach. The bad coaching extends well, beyond gears, ridiculous decision to punt on fourth and one in overtime, Jones's already on the record. Questioning that decision Garrett and his offense of coaching stabbed blue this game in regulation, the before, entering that transpired and over overtime within evitable with the game tied in the final three minutes of the fourth quarter, Dallas had the ball at their own forty, seven and face. Second eight, given the trouble. The Cowboys had blocking JJ watt, and David and cloudy all night gares staff called the worst play of the night. They had deck Prescott dropped back to pass, turn his back on the defense fake to handoffs turn around and then look for receiver to throw the ball to guess what when Dak turned around JJ watt was sitting in his lap. And the next play was third and seventeen game over Jason Garrod is in over his head. Forgive me for this Marcellus, Gary, your stereotypical prep school. All Ivy league elite fast track to a position of power because his resume says, so not his accomplishments. This is what Jerry Jones needs to realize Jason geared and Sean Payton are not cut from the same claw Peyton earned every opportunities ever received. He was an undersized quarterback in eastern Illinois. He bounced around the elitist arena league as a quarterback. "bill parcells" Discussed on The Paul Finebaum Show

"Matt is in Austin, Texas, Matt, thank you. Good afternoon. Welcome to the show. They don't know how I can follow that, but it would be virtually impossible to follow that call. A number of caller is brought up coach Bryant on this day. When we remember him reminded me of the story Bill Parcells coaching linebackers in Texas Tech in Lubbock, one hot summer, and he noticed an old gentleman coming out and sitting on the hood of his car and watching practice everyday kind of had an old beat up jacket and pants. He didn't look very good. Say, finally, ask somebody that old guy that, oh guy was Gordon, would it was the legendary high school coach at brownwood high, and he was driving six or more hours one way each day to watch Bill Parcells coached, linebackers tech, and try to pick something up. And the connection to coach Bryant is you know which Bryant was been went to Alabama. You know years later, people would ask him by did that. And he said, well, as long as I was coaching in Texas, I couldn't be the best coach in Texas because Gordon would isn't taxes for my goodness. There you go. All right. Paul just wanted to share that story with you have a thank you very much. I think Parcells coach at Vanderbilt too. Or remember the story. Remember talking about that anyway. Let's continue more calls and Ben is in Chattanooga. Hey, Ben. Hey, Paul first time caller, thank you. Love your show as it the first time I've called you had several Chattanooga colors today. That's pretty awesome. The first thing I wanted to say is I'm a dog fan. I live in Tennessee married to an Alabama fan. Now I'll tell you that because it's very unusual. But I mean, I wanted to be interesting anyway, because of that's the reason I'm calling because I couldn't call yesterday. I don't get home till late, so I have to watch you through DVR. But today I didn't get to watch the show because I'm trying. I'm trying to keep it on mute. So the missile phone. But anyway, the reason I called was about the Texas A&_m. game because I was so excited about the season that I watched Texas AM played northwestern. I believe it was north western state. Yeah, that's correct. And you know, I was watching that game because it was the first game to come on, and I was they had kill him on starting with then. Was it Nick star called that came in? Correct. You know, at the half, maybe and I saw him play and he was like really good. And I was just wondering what you thought about him. I mean, I know that maybe they shouldn't put him in and Clemson game. But I mean, what are you? What did you? What do you think about? You know, I think it was a very difficult decision between kellyn mind and Nick Starr think they went back and forth. Stark will certainly had experienced, but I thought he handled the situation. Well, I mean, I think I think they're in really good shape of that position. Mom, no is right now. I mean that that I mean, he played one of the great games of his life the other day in that setting. Right. Well, I, I could easily talk about Georgia, but we have several people that you know cover that, and I hear enough about my my Georgia dogs. From my wife talks to me about it. But anyway, I enjoy your show and I just wanted to tell you that and wanted to be interesting today. Thank you very much. It's been a great show so far we had Dave Williams on from Vanderbilt. He is the vice chancellor in the outgoing athletic director announcing today. He was stepping down and he came on with us as well as the chancellor at Vanderbilt, Nick Zepos, Kirk herbstreet is coming up next stick around who when it comes.

Scott Frost debuts at Nebraska against Colorado

"But what do you expect from frost in Nebraska today that really the first game? We all know, we've seen Scott frost. It is different stops. He knows how to coach offense. He's he's gonna make point. He's going to get points. And I think you've seen the running of the quarterbacks got to be part of that mix. I'm very true freshman quarterback. Adrian, Martinez cat is very good. And I think he's got a bright future Kirk. But the one thing I'm looking at with them is how much can you run them because Gabby as soon as he found out that the freshman Martinez was gonna start he transfers. And so are you going to run your quarterback a lot to win ballgames that you need to win? 'cause they're going to need to do that. How much is that balance? How delicate is that's gonna be a challenge for Scott frost? His is is what it is going to have to do it. Big part of what he wants to do. I can't wait to watch the true freshman. I I really think the story could be on the other side of the ball. They're going to win this game. We saw just saw some highlights and the throwbacks in the nineties. It was the defense in those years. They're going to be challenged at home. Today. Steven Montas last week he missed three passes twenty to twenty five and Colorado state. I don't care if it's against the air twenty two or twenty five got some good athletes coming in from the pack twelve they were down last last year. I think they're back. This is this is an opportunity for C you to send a message to everybody that they can play this year in the Pac twelve was impressive completed. His first will get the office. We'll get back to Scott frost impresses me about Scott, the coaches who influenced his life his coaching career. I mean, he was at Stanford Bill wash. It was obviously Nebraska Tom Osborne in the NFL, Bill Belichick. Bill Parcells Mike Tomlin. They don't forget at Oregon chip Kelly. He brings that toughness. But he also brings their creativity on office. You talk about Martinez. He actually compared Martinez. Marcus mariota who was on a playoff team at Oregon. That's a huge compliment to compare him to Mario the Heisman. Scott frost is going to win a boat load of games at Nebraska. But one of them's not going to

"Excellent job another doomsday podcast in the books anything you want to add anything else that you thought of i would have to say that the cowboys have some trouble at tight end right now they're gonna have to find could have to figure that position out of they've got the guy who's what the third leading receiver in the history of the game at any position and they're turning that position now over to four guys who have a combined nine regular season catches all by swain yeah they're going to have to do it a different way tae vons going to have to line up the good do a lot of jet sweeps i don't know what they're gonna do because what as i described on our last podcast people tell me dalton schultz the fourth round pick out of stanford is jackofalltrades master of none you handle the blocking part it's what about you know being where you're supposed to be and and being a reliable receiver for a quarterback who's got a whole bunch of new receivers that he's got to create a chemistry within a single off as as one of our top in in most loyal listeners ted psyche my neighbor and one of the top criminal defense attorneys in dallas said we least we have rico gathers waiting in the wings what do you think that this is great because finally whitten's out of the way and rico gathers can do what he said last year which was he's going to become the most dominant tight end in football i watched almost every basketball game the guy ever played a sadly he never he never played a down of football at baylor he he was a wonderful basketball player i mean one of the great rebounders in the history of the big twelve i don't know i just know that we've seen flashes in the preseason.

"You remember the the giants game that he came into parcels put him in there at halftime of that game he pulled drew bledsoe that was a six game of the season the next week romo's started at the panthers and i'll never forget the story like romo threw interception turned it over in typical romo fashion and they're down fourteen nothing early to the panthers are we doing romo podcast and and putt well hey don't don't in fritos over here nodding he knows i'm no no he knows you're not right because this is all about whitton okay wit wit i'm sure this is a podcast we can get to whatever the hell i want to get to so so it's some point whitten goes and grabs romo in basically picks him up and says what are you doing are you okay what's happening in shook him like a little kid and romo said i got this i'm fine we're going to be fine they went onto win that game and i would say as far as the well wanna turn this into like brokeback mountain or something but in terms of the quarterback receiver a quarterback tied in relationship there are not many closer relationships that we've ever seen in the history of the nfl then whitton in romo and that will always be and that makes me think of of something what brokeback now that now that romo is retired and witton is retired maybe jerry can bring back to yo to replace this.

"Doing this had the great privilege of covering jimmy johnson and bill parcells to most fascinating guys i've ever covered in the nfl on a regular basis thanks so much bill preach time enjoy derby all right there he goes the great bill parcells the hall of famer himself joining the doomsday podcast breaking down everything with today's momentous occasion of jason witten saying goodbye in announcing his official retirement from the dallas cowboys as he gets ready to embark on a broadcasting career perhaps ed he will he will get into podcasting business or maybe maybe he'll just go ahead and focus on being the the analyst monday night football there's there's two things in this regard that that before we break down you know whitten's impact as a football player on the cowboys i just want to there's two things i want to say that to me represent the kind of person he is and the first of those is when we were training camp last year we had made no request of jason witten to be our guest and on a player's day off he stood out there on the field and work with one of jerry's grandkids as he had promised for over an hour and a half and when he was finished he had a clear escape route to avoid you and i and almost every player in football that i've ever met with take out not walk to it but run to gone on roller skates as parcells might have set and jason witten instead walked right over to our location sat down and spent forty five minutes as one of the great guests we've ever had and the other one i wanted to talk about you by the way i don't think we had reached out or notified him other than we just kind of were hanging around and he sat down and said let yona do something let's and the other one was not long ago this past season which proved to be his final year i went out there because i was i was going to cover a game and i guess it wasn't last year was here before that anyway i went out to cover game last year and i guess it was for westwood one.

"These guys here that's that's what's supposed to be about bill what obviously the the cowboys made the decision to waive dez bryant now they've unexpectedly lost jason witten after you know the laughter a lot of the off season has been spent how how detrimental or what do you think the challenge becomes now for for a young quarterback like dak prescott without those two player proven players in his offense somebody's gonna be playing those positions i mean that's the way he's got to look at it somebody's going to plans he probably put chance or not only because productive initially as the two fellows that jeff left is probably a real good chance of that but quarterbacks jobs to make it work and the the new guys in in those jobs job who said learn their quarterback i learned their system and try to execute it to their ability and that's the way the game is it's not that that's nothing new so you know it's that they're going to have somebody playing tied in somebody's going to be playing split at at dallas this year and you know on monday mornings after the games that they're not going to be talking about does brian chase it that'd be talking about these new guys what they did what do you think are the qualities of the cowboys are gonna miss the most immediately with whitten's absence dependability is one i mean every sunday for fifteen years they they knew their tight end was be that's unusual.

"Plays what you're not doing one of those two on some some other positions the ball's not always coming your way this there's a little time to take a little break once in a while but tight ends really not like that you're involved pretty much in the offense every single play one way or another did you know it seemed to me sort of symbolic of the kind of player witne is and the way he approached the game that he almost never outwardly you know and certainly never overly celebrated his own touchdowns but i can remember times where he'd make a seal block on demarco murray touchdown and he'd you know punch the air or something that you know he had sealed that guy off and kept him from getting to murray and allowing his teammate to score touchdown that that was more meaningful to him well you know he was well rounded player i mean he he run blocking catch and that's what a tight end has to do if you're going to be completed that position just like a running back he has to run block and catch tied in has to do same thing if he's going to be ineffective player now there are tight ends that are more pass receiving types and get plenty of notoriety for doing that but on some of the other stuff the some of the dirty work they're not quite as up to speed jason did his best in both areas.

"And boy sad day in the metroplex rainy dark day i don't know how much of that had to do with the official announcement it happened jason witten has said goodbye to the dallas cowboys had his official retirement ceremony today great crowd out there all the teammates showed up for that and i even saw a dez saying really nice things i think initially dez thought jason might have been one of the garrett guys who sort of did him in but seemed like even dez today was realizing may might be a good thing to recognize the great jason witten and he says goodbye and tonight ed i'm gonna let you say who it is in in sort of set this up since you delivered it em another amazing guest another hall of famer joins the doomsday podcast it would you give an introduction and just take us right into an amazing guests that you brought us while i think we're are going to hear the unique perspective of a guy who really valued the title end position more than any other head coach i've known he was obviously an enormous get for us as he was for jerry jones because nobody could believe that bill parcells would partner with jerry jones and coach the dallas cowboys but bill did that for four seasons and then he did finally retire but he was responsible for drafting jason witten in the third round and witten prove that commitment and an an owned her lived up to it more than anybody could have imagined a guy that parcells deeply respected for his toughness and we're going to talk in great detail about the fractured jaw that caused caused him to miss one game but i think a couple of other things that we have to come all the points i wanna make before we get to the interview just quickly i think when you talk to people with the cowboys about what they're going to lose with whitten's unexpected retirement you know they're going to lose you know his productivity was on the decline as we said last week there's no denying that he was not physically the breakaway deep threat that he was at one point in his career average one point six yards after the.
