Your listening to balance of power with David Westin on Bloomberg radio. I'm Joe Matthew in for David Weston, President Biden delivered a fiery speech to the nation attacking Donald Trump and maga Republicans this week from Philadelphia's independence hall. My degree Republicans have made their choice. They ain't brace anger. They thrive on chaos. They live not in the light of truth, but in the shadow of lies. But together, together we can choose a different path, we can choose a better path. The president also saying that so called maga Republicans are working to undermine elections. They're working right now. As I speak in state after state to give power to decide elections in America to partisans and cronies, empowering election deniers to undermine democracy itself. I will not stand by and watch the most fundamental freedom in this country to freedom to vote and have your vote counted and be taken from you and the American people. But President Biden's intensified anti Trump message also risks deepening America's political divisions, something I discussed with governor Glenn youngkin from Virginia, one of the most notable post Trump Republicans on the national stage. He's been traveling the country to help raise money for Republican candidates, and I asked if he thinks the maga wing of the GOP is a threat to democracy. I was stunned at how divisive this speech was. And at a time where people across America and I know in Virginia are worried about some of the most basic issues rising inflation and trying to make ends meet, crime and oh, by the way, education challenges. And it's a time when, in fact, we've got to focus on these issues and our president jumped out and was incredibly divisive, trying to pit Americans against one another. And what we learned last year in Virginia is that it's these most important kitchen table concerns that when we bring when we bring common sense solutions to them, we can bring people together. When I won last year, it wasn't Republicans against Democrats. We won the independent vote. We had lots of Democrats come with us. And at the end of the day, this is a time when we've got real issues run away inflation. I mean, let's be serious. We got real challenges and inflation. We've got the fed having to move aggressively in order to slow things down. And Jay pal came out and said it's going to hurt and yet we've got our president trying to divide the nation. And I just think it's time to put all that down and to focus on these most important kitchen table concerns that Americans and I know virginians have and we can address them with common sense solutions like we're doing in Virginia right now, getting taxes down, funding law enforcement and focusing on education. So you're reject the president's message, but that was a stark warning from the president of the United States governor. Do you believe there are anti democratic forces in the Republican Party? I believe that we have people who are searching for leadership. And the leadership comes and it comes at a time when we need to be focused on these most important issues. Not calling each other names and trying to divide the country. I mean, when we look at when we look at what's happened over the course of the last couple of years, we've seen our economy fall from having been a good one to a real challenge to one inflation running away, crime really challenged. We've got a crisis at the border. We've watched America actually really fall from the national from the international scene in leadership. And I think Americans broadly recognize this. We can see it in the president's job approval ratings. He's got just terrible job approval ratings, and at a time when we're heading into the midterms, what do you do? You change that you change the narrative. Well, let's go back and talk about the economy. Let's go back and talk about schools. Let's talk about crime. Let's talk about the border and let's come up with real solutions to these most important issues. Let's not call each other names. A new poll from quinnipiac university governor shows 70% of Americans who was 67% to be exact. Think democracy is in danger of collapse. When you see a number of that big, do you worry that our institutions are under attack? Well, I just feel like that entire poll question is an odd one. I mean, America's democracy is not going to collapse. We are, we have seen tough times historically where we've worked through it. This

Richard Baris and Charlie Discuss the RNC Autopsy Report

"Are reminiscing on a previous program. About the RNC's autopsy report. Do you remember that back in 2012? Yes. Yes. The whole thing? Yeah, and so we were reminiscing about reince priebus and all of that. And I've always gotten along with Ryan. It's not, it's not a slight it hits. I would have done things differently than him, but that's okay. And they said, we are going to lose Florida. We're going to lose all these states. Remember, Florida had senator Nelson, Democrat? Yes. Bill Nelson? That's right. Obama won it in 12, right? This was a blue state. And so over ten years, what is it from a policy perspective though, Richard that has now turned this into incredibly more Republican than Georgia? Yeah. Yeah, I'll tell you. That's a really good question. The answer is really interesting. And the autopsy was like a $1 million piece of it. It was total nonsense. You know, the bottom line is when you're going to increase your appeal to working voters, family voters. It's not going to be isolated within one race, right? And that's something they missed in that autopsy, but honestly, in Florida, the interesting thing Bill Nelson, he used to be thought of as a moderate. So he could do well. He was an astronaut, right? He was a national hero. Astronauts can be beaten, just ask Mark Kelly. That's right. Just don't tell Mark Kelly, but yes. And by the way, Mark Kelly's leading by roughly the same margins that Bill Nelson was leading Rick Scott by until we called Rick Scott, the giant killer. Back then, because that's he would always come in with these 40% favorability rating and yet topple these people that are supposedly unbeatable.

"Bill Nelson spent two decades working for the Federal Reserve, and he's now the chief economist of the bank lobbying group at the bank policy institute. And while Bill usually places more weight on the need to encourage a booming labor market, then fighting inflation, even he thinks the fed tightens too slowly. I think that they waited too long, they should have realized they had such a long way to go that they really needed to get started. So Bill has 6 main reasons why he thinks the fed took too long. Reason number one, which might sound familiar, the ghosts of fed tightenings passed. Instead of lingering regret over having tightened, perhaps too soon, out of concern for inflation that didn't materialize. We told the story of this low inflation period of the 2010s, and last week's episode called Jerome Powell's ghosts. And if you haven't already, we really recommend that you check it out for more in depth background. But the basic point is this Jerome Powell didn't want to lift interest rates too soon and risk unnecessarily crashing the markets and putting a whole bunch of people out of work. And that brings us to reason number two, a concern over inequality. When interest rates are low, businesses can borrow and expand more easily. That means a faster recovery. And that is particularly beneficial for low wage workers who were disproportionately black and Latino. Bill says this was especially salient for the fed in the wake of the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests. I think that that led the fed to redouble their desire to try to do something about unequal incomes. Bill's reason number three for the fed being slow is basically that the fed fumbled its communication, at least in hindsight. So think back to the early days of the pandemic. Good afternoon, everyone. And thanks for joining us. An enormous number of people out of work, border shutting around the world, and markets plunging. Here's Jerome Powell around that time. We're not thinking about raising rates. We're not even thinking about thinking about raising rates. Remember, interest rates were basically at zero. And so central banks wanted to reassure markets that they'd stay low for a long time into the future. And to keep credibility, the fed had to keep true to them. At least for a while. No rate increase, at least through 2022. But then by June 2021, inflation had shot up to 5%. So Jerome Powell was in this bind. Does he break that promise not to tighten policy and instead nip inflation in the bud?.
