"Let's go north of the border for the first time and woodbine's got a nice grated steak on their card tomorrow. It's the great two knot cup and these are three year olds and up, sprinting 7 furlongs on the turf, really good field of 14 here, Dave and some runners who've been sprinting some runners who have been spending most of their careers routing. A lot of different ways you can go. I don't know that week in and week out my best handicapping takes place at woodbine, particularly on the synthetic surface. I don't know that this is where I have my best hunches and probably should be where I should be spending most of my betting dollars. That being said, would binds racing this weekend is terrific. This is a 14 horse field with a bunch of horses that I really like, including number 14 Sheryl spate, who I thought ran really big at keeneland back in April and was a horse that I heard a lot of people giving support to on Derby day at Churchill didn't run a great race, but did run against awfully good horses that day. And then last time out, ran on dirt at Monmouth. I think Sheryl spate has a really good opportunity here, but boy, do I hate that 14 post posts 9 and out going 7 furlongs that would bind this meter a combined one for 31 and that's just not a number I want to bet into, though I do think Sheryl has a really big opportunity in here. The horse that I probably like best is filo D Ariana number 7 cause Kimura is running really, really well right now riding really well. The race last time out was on synthetic at woodbine. The two previous to that are just dramatically better than this race. The Belmont, the shaker town at keeneland. And when you go back to the previous race at woodbine, back in June of last year, that was really good too. So the horse likes the track and I think is running well even though it's a little bit hard to tell because the last one was on synthetic. I think phyllo Ariana also has found even though it's a big field erase that doesn't have an enormous amount of pace that they can run really close up and be in a good position. It's not a single by any stretch of the imagination marched to the arch on the rail as three for 6 woodbine, not running great right now, but second off a layoff certainly has races that would be good enough. I also think chewing gum for Bill Mott number three is with the chance in here. Four of the last 6 races in that horse's PPs are pretty darn good and it wouldn't surprise me if chewing gum runs a big one, but I like filo D Ariana the best. Yeah, he certainly looks like he has a good chance. I picked Sheryl spite on top just because I think he's been facing the best company and it was good enough to win the grade one makers Mark mile three starts back at Keenan. The horse that intrigues me and it's because of something you said is number 9 silent poet. There isn't a lot of speed in this race and silent poets the only one who regularly looks like he wants to be forwardly placed. In fact, more often than not, he seems to be on the front end. He was actually a 6 to 5 favorite against filo di Ariana in that one's North American debut, and that one blew the doors off silent poet down the stretch. But I wonder if they leave silent poet alone on the front end if he can get brave at a big price. I'm going to use him on my tickets as well. By the way, he's won ten of 18 starts that he's tried on the woodbine turf. 8 to one on the morning line. I picture spite because of the class, but I'm going to use silent poet because of the pace scenario. You could get brave out there on the front end. 7 furlong scares me for him. But he ran okay last year in this race. And I think he's going to get the lead. So I'm intrigued. It's a fun, grade two can not Cup race 8 tomorrow up at woodbine. All right, we're going to take our first break. When we come back, we are going to dive in to that monster card tomorrow at Monmouth. They've got 6 stakes in all, including 5 graded stakes and we're going to look at all of those great at stakes. "XM two O one streaming worldwide at horse racing radio net and podcast, major podcast platforms, each and every week. Well, my guest on today's show, first appeared on trainer talk in September of 2016. The son of Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott mentioned his dream was to one day train on his own. Well, that dream is about to become reality. This past winter, he took out his trainer's license in Florida, and after 8 years working alongside his father, he now plans to start running horses in his name later this year. Please join me in welcoming trainer Riley mot back to trainer talk presented by phasic tipton. Riley appreciated my friend. Thanks for having me on again. Man, I'll tell you what, I wish you were some type of voice doctor. I'm going to try and keep my voice together for the next hour here for us. But wow, I had to laugh when I reached out and asked you to join me on the show. And I mentioned that the show is an hour long and you're reply to me was hopefully I have enough to say. And it's the same reply I got from your dad when I asked him to join me on this show a few years back. So I guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Yeah, hopefully you have a lot of questions for me to answer. Hey, I want you to do most of the talking There we go. Can do. Yeah. Well, you know the best part about that is that once your dad gets going, he's an incredible interview. Yeah, I mean, just growing up, you know, I've heard stories about his past experiences growing up in the Midwest, particularly South Dakota and cutting his teeth in places like Nebraska and Holly Colorado and Detroit raceway, et cetera so a guy who's up in his 68 years old or so and he's been doing it since he was 14. So the man's had years and years of experience and a lot of stories to go along with it. So, you know, he could probably write a book if he wanted to, but he's always seeming to come up with some new stories I've never heard, which is pretty cool. I can't believe he's 68 years old. Yeah, I might have him off by a year or two or maybe a little younger a little older. But he looks good. He's moving around well. I mean, I think, you know, he's still a full steam ahead with the training and his daily routines. I think it keeps him young. I remember when you appeared on this show 6 years ago, you mentioned that love of horses that you have began at your dad's green tree operation in Saratoga when he used to train at that facility. Yeah, I mean, my earliest memories are from greentree. It's a little oasis here in Saratoga. Currently owned by godolphin and has two big, beautiful barns with a private track and back when we were there. There was a little par three golf course in the middle of the track when it was owned by bob mcnair. Stoner sides tables. And yeah, I mean, it was just very picturesque and a good place for the horses, but yeah, that's about where my love for the game started as a young kid just getting brought to the barn more so just to exert some energy more than anything. They had me fill in a water buckets and picking up the trash and whatever, whatever a little kid can do around there and just being around the team and getting to know everyone in the operation and how to move around a horse and things of that nature. It's just, I just loved it all, really. So it's kind of a love at first sight type of thing. Was this always what you would see yourself doing for a living or was there a time when you said maybe I'll do something other than working with horses? It was really never anything else to be quite honest. Like I said, from a young age, I was there when I could be and it just when I started realizing that people go on and do things for a living or have a career after they're in school and whatever. It was really just like, okay, well, I'll be a trainer because that's what I love. And that's what I want to pursue. And I know many people, especially people that I was around, they always told me how lucky I was that I had found my passion at such a young age. And it's still my passion to this day. And I'm really excited to pursue my goals. Why is now the right time to make the move and go out on your own? I've had the itch for a couple of years now. I mean, is there ever like the perfect time to do it? I'm not exactly sure. You know, just talking to my dad about it. Growing up, he always just said, well, you have to know when the right opportunity for you as there could be opportunities that present themselves, but they might not always be the right ones or the best ones. So it's not like somebody came up to me and said, well, send you 20 head of horses, go out on your own. In this particular case, I feel like I've just been able to see so much in the barn that I'm very confident with the tools that I have knowing our system inside and out and everything in between, I mean, I think I just feel that I'm ready to take the next step and continue to learn from the role as a trainer. I think I'm pretty well equipped and I've been kind of groomed to do this my whole life. So I'm just ready to put what I've learned to the test and just pursue my dreams. What was your dad's reaction when you told him, hey, I think I'm going to do this now. I think I'm going to make this move. I

"Going 7 furlongs at that tough Saratoga meet. We haven't seen her since. I don't know what happened to Jane grey, obviously. It was something bad enough that she's been gone for almost two years, but they're betting her like she's going to win. She's 6 to 5 on the board. I wouldn't take 6 to 5, but she certainly a major player in here. And number four, mischievous Diane is never interesting one for trainer ray handel and jockey Dylan Davis. We haven't seen her since early December last year. It was her third career start, and she went wire to wire on a sloppy track. It's funny. She's raised three times once on a fast track once on a muddy track once on a sloppy track. And she ran well in all three. And she's a Philly that can show speed, but she doesn't need the lead to still run well. Ray handel is one of these trainers that is never going to be as respected as he should be. He doesn't have the big name horses. He doesn't run as much as some of the others. He's only winning 31% this meet at Belmont park in 23% overall for the year. This guy knows what he's doing and can get horses ready to run. Now, off extended layoffs, 14%. So not as high as his overall percentage, that's the question, Mark. Plus you got to take two to one. It's not like she's an 8 to one shot in here, but those are two Phillies who we have not seen in quite some time, that if they're ready to run, could be dangerous. They are arriving at the starting gate now for this 7th race. It's the only non steak race that we will be covering today. And after this race, we're going to bring on Anthony stabile to preview the other stakes on today's card as well as look at some of the races on tomorrow's card as well. Phillies and mayors have arrived at the starting gate for this 7th race at Belmont park. Once again, it's an a other than race going 6 furlongs on the fast main track, 6 to 5 favorite right now is the Bill Mott trainee owned by godolphin Jane grey. She's by into mischief out of the bernardini mayor crowned, ran super in her career debut better than what you see for most Bill Mott trainees and then something bad, obviously happened for her be gone since September of 2020. They have started the loading process for this 7th race at Belmont park this race actually begins their pick 5 today, races 7, 8, 9, ten and 11, fight on Lucy, ruby's in time, mischievous Diane, have gone in. Here's Baba in search of her 6th career win. A will away completes the line, John in brielle at Belmont with the call. And they're off. A.

"Put anything up on the board until somebody claimed foul, which is just an awful look, because it makes it seem whether this is true or not. It makes it seem like the stewards don't know what they're watching. Like, how is it possible that the entire grandstand of a hundred something thousand people saw something happen and the stewards was 6 television monitors and three of them doing nothing but watching the race don't see anything to even hang the inquiry. Not that you have to take a horse down, but just let the public know that, hey, it's a steward's inquiry. We're looking into the incident with maximum security going into the far turn or with weyburn bouncing off the rail at the furlong pole. It's very odd that it's a very bad look. It doesn't make any sense to say, well, they looked at it and they decided it wasn't worthy of putting an inquiry up. What does that mean? So does that mean that every inquiry that goes up, they should be taking the horse down? Any time there's a possibility. Any time they're inquiring into something, the inquiry should go up. It's very simple. It makes it look like, hey, we're paying attention. We saw something too, we're going to look and see if it's something that's if it's actually something or if it's nothing. It was just a bad look as far as I'm concerned. All right, I'm not going to vent on that race anymore. Olympiad, by the way, was great. And he covered the mile in a 16th and one 41 and three, and he certainly looks like a handicap horse that's at the top of the heap or right there with some of the other ones. I don't know how he matches up with the hot rod charlies and mandolins if they're healthy and life is good. Depending on how far they're going to run him eventually and even flight lying down the line, but olympiads kind of dance most of the dances right now. I thought it was actually strange that he ran in the alley sheba and did not run in the grade one Oak Lawn and whether the $1 million Oak Lawn handicap a few weeks ago instead. It seems like the purse was significant it was twice as much at Oakland and he would have been three to 5 in that race as well. But they obviously know what they're doing and the Bill Mott trainee has been very, very good and it seems like he wins every time he goes to the races right now. He's a horse that looked good sprinting to start his career and he's looked good routing the last several races as well olympiad one of the top handicap horses in the land in an impressive winner of the grade two alley sheba last Friday at Churchill down. So we're going to take our final break when we come back. Phone lines are still open, give us a call 8 8 8 9 6 6 four 7 7 6 is the number that's triple 8, 9 6 6 HR N this is the bris net dot com call in show on the horse.

"Gets an automatic bid to the Preakness if he or she is nominated at the Triple Crown. Same thing with the winner of the tesio. We heard in the rejoin shake him loose able to beat heavily favored Joe when they faced off in the private terms last time out, Joe was defeated at even money that day you're going to get a better price on him tomorrow. Do you think he turns the tables on shake them loose? I think it is possible. I'm not really sure. I think it's a wide, wide open race. If you're a fig player or if you kind of evaluate final times of races, I think you're going to find a bunch of horses that look pretty similar in here. Shake them loose, obviously, is coming off a win in a similar spot. But needs pace and I don't see a ton of pace in here. I love the fact that shake them loose is really, really sharp right now. And I think Joe certainly can turn the tables. I'm trying to find somebody else. Remember Joe is even money when they raced last time. I'm a little bit interested in secret alliance, number 9 for John service, I think the last race was pretty good against maidens at parks, but again, those were maidens at parks. Smarten up number 7 gets the Lasix for the first time. I like that. The last two races at parks, I wish they were wins and not seconds, but they're competitive. In the end, I just trust Bill Mott more than anyone else in here. So a little bit of a curve ball south street 8 to one coming out of a maiden race in which he was rank and won at 6 to one at aqueduct. It's the most expensive horse in the field. It's the best trainer in the field and I wonder if Bill Mott has spotted his horse very smartly here has found a little bit of a soft stakes field and can pull one out at a nice price. Certainly doesn't look like the top notch three year olds in the country, but up and comers as it seems like they're always are in these Federico tesio stakes. So Dave going with number 5 south street, I'm also going to try to beat the locals with number 7 smarten up for Alfredo Velasquez and angel crews getting Lasix for the first time in his career after racing without Lasix at both aqueduct and parks in his first 7 starts. I like his consistency. I think he's going to get a nice trip either on or stalking the pace. And to me, he looks as good as anyone else and he's going to be a better price than some of them use 9 to two on the morning line. So smart and up for me, south street for Dave, we're both taking shots against the favorites into tomorrow's Federico tesio race 9 on the card at Laurel. We're going to take a break. When we come back, we're going to head down to Keenan. They've got three stakes on their Saturday card, including two graded stakes. "8 and in fact didn't finish second in any of those races. Now, some of those were against pretty good competition. Abscond is kind of similar. No winds in 2022 for one, no wins in 2021. Zero for 7. But again, running against better horses and running competitively against those horses. So then you kind of start looking around sheree devoe's a niche number 8 stepping up in class, but certainly has speed in here, dawns dancer. You get a nice price. You get Jose or tease. I don't know the figs certainly don't look hot enough, but I thought the last race was pretty good on synthetic. I ended up with abscond. I just feel like abscond has been running against better horses and I'm gonna throw out the last race against past the plate. I don't know what went wrong. I'm gonna say that if absconded run head to head with past the plate and won that race, the horse would be three to two in here. The morning line is 7 or two. You look to the past races and abscond looks like the best. So if, in fact, something went wrong last time out, now I'm getting a little bit of value in a race that I don't have a strong opinion on. I don't have a strong opinion either. I went to number one past the plate. I liked his win last time out. He actually ran third in this race last year. I think against better field daleka and temple city, terror finishing just ahead of her. I should say her not him that day. I put a meche in there as the second pick. Those were the two I would use horizontally numbers one and 8, but I can certainly see if you can forgive abscond for her last race. Why you would use her, but I'm not going to put her in on this spot. Pass the plate for me, abscond for Dave in the stall memorial race 9 tomorrow at the fairgrounds graded stakes begin with race number ten quarter $1 million grade three mineshaft, boy, he was a good horse. Several years back. Four year olds and up going a mile and a 16th on the main track and a very good field of 11 here, David. This is simply a lot of good horses showed up because mandolin and midnight bourbon who would normally be in this race are opting for the Saudi cup instead next weekend. Yeah, this is a terrific race. It's a big field. It's a quality field and you can go in a lot of different ways and almost regardless of where you land, you're going to find a decent price. I'm concerned with the pace in here. I don't see a lot of horses that are going to roll out there and set quick fractions. I am concerned if you are too far off the lead if you're going to be able to make it. I am interested in olympiad for Bill Mott. I'm not sure this is the distance that olympiad eventually wants a 16th. I thought it was interesting that mock commented on the race to back the grade one cigar mile. He thought that I read or tease kind of gave up on the race and stopped writing when he thought olympiad had more in Kim $700,000 horse quality three wins and 6 starts, two of the last three really, really good plus the race that Mott didn't like the ride in the grade one makes a lot of sense. Same story for miles D for Chad Brown and Peter Brandt has Jose Ortiz. The last two against smaller fields are excellent, was not disgraced in the traverse in August, finished third behind essential quality and midnight bourbon. There are no knocks on miles D you could go to about three or four or 5 or 6 other horses untreated and happy American and obey those that all are reasonable in here. But I want someone that's close to the lead. I think olympiad will be honored to write off it. I think miles D will be right behind olympiad and the horse that I think is the fewest question marks is miles D and that's where I went. All right, I'm gonna go to the other one. Number four olympiad. I like what I've seen from him. He seems like he's getting better and better with each and every start. Just 6 starts in this four year old's career, no reason he can't continue to improve. And he proved that he could win around two turns last time out at Gulfstream park. I think he takes his show on the road and gets it done tomorrow in the mine shaft, race number ten quarter $1 million on the line for this grade three event. We're going to take our final time out when we come back. We'll look at the final three races on the fairgrounds card tomorrow, including the grade two risen star, you're listening to the weekend stakes preview presented by Naya on the horse racing radio network. "Still has it a length and a half to Rockefeller. McKinnon swings out for the drive. They're at the top of the stretch and new grains still loaded at the 8th pole, builds up a two and a half length lead, Rockefeller can't keep up with it stablemate. They're followed by McKinnon and oviya class a big step forward and start two for newgrange who makes every polar winning one in the sham stinks. So new games goes wired a wire kind of tracked there by Rockefeller throughout and Rockefeller was in second, clear of the rest for out. McKinnon started to make a little bit of a move I thought, kind of on the turn and thought he looked okay, flattened out a little bit down the stretch as oviatt class came and grabbed him for third. So I am kind of curious if they do take one more shot with McKinnon on the main track because it's pretty tough to close into decent to good horses 24 and two 48 four at San Anita like going a mile. You know, and they came home and 25 and three. I mean, not a super slow come home time given what they went early and so you know I would be curious to see McKinnon one more time on the dirt, maybe gets a more favorable pace set up or a pay setup at all. And it has a chance. But I think part of me is rooting for that horse just because I like Nathan McKinnon the hockey player who's named after Eric Johnson, who's one of the owners of the horse. He's a defenseman for the Colorado. Avalanche. He's named a few after teammates. I know there was a land of skag. I think there was a cadre, but I don't remember if that one was his or not, but Kenan was one. And he was saying that, you know, the guys in the team are all really into and stuff. So it's kind of a fun little side story when it comes to a kid. One of the more exciting races of the weekend, I thought was the Joe Hernandez stakes at Santa Anita hill on the turf was supposed to be downhill. They broke from out of the shoot. It was originally scheduled for the downhill, but they had obviously a lot of that rain in the first week. And they're going to just be cautious. That's how I assume that's going to go over there, but beer can man. Ran almost too good to lose was just stocking the early leaders grabbed the lead in mid stretch for floppy pride. This was kind of a classic rispoli Pratt finish. Now we've gotten so used to seeing these two run one two and responding with chewing gum circled up on the outside and just able to get beer came in. You know, didn't really dispose of his rivals in mid stretch. Like he took the lead, but just grinding, grinding, grinding, and then for a split second there about the 16th pole. I thought he was going to slip away and wasn't going to get caught. But the chewing gam came and nailed him right on the money in the $250,000 Joe here. So that's a tough photo to photo to lose. That's my guys too my little red feather buddies. It's a 100,000 photos sorry gear and Billy, but Bill Mott getting up with huberto rispoli. I thought I read somewhere too. It might have been really, really cold in the interference. Well, he got himself a wind in the Joe Hernandez. So just a fun day though at Santa Anita as a whole, the lock in the United States should mention that too as time goes by the runner, stocking from just off the pace and then blowing their doors off at a very, very short price beating Park Avenue in that one. Let's take a quick break. We come back we'll talk a little bit of Gulf Stream. We'll talk a little bit about the Jerome and aqueduct. We'll start at the Jerome at aqueduct is a weekend recap addition. The Jason bean horse racing podcast brought to you by inspires. The Jason beam horse racing podcast brought to you by twin spires. "Well arlington. is that the only venue in the spotlight today. We also have saratoga which is hosting the four star. Dave steaks and when you think about horses that have contributed to the lower the legend mystique of thoroughbred racing. You certainly think about four star. Dave and i told you earlier but if you are just joining me and you didn't hear it four star. Dave is a horse that won a race at saratoga eight consecutive years. Just a remarkable streak and today we remember him with the four star dave steaks and the salt in the saratoga as he is known will be on a lot of people's minds as we move throughout the afternoon. I remember that When before i moved to kentucky and i would go to saratoga every year when four star dave was injured and saratoga he meant so much to saratoga the saratoga set up a a huge massive. I it was. It was almost like a wall but it was a get well card for four star. Dave and there's a picture of me that. "Hall of fame trainer. Belmont has been better than any trainer in the history of the sport. When it comes to the forest star. Dave he has settled a total of five thousand one hundred thirty one winners in his career. Four of those coming in the forest. Dave more than any trainer in history and he is with me now on a very busy morning for him so we won't keep him long bill. Good morning appreciate a few minutes. Hey thanks for having me on. Good morning he appreciate you taking time. I know how busy saratoga saturday mornings can be casa creed looks to give you win number five in the four star dave today last year. He was third in this very same race. What are you seeing from him. Coming into this year's race well he's coming up a couple of really good races You know we shortened him up. Anyone going seven eighths and then won the grade one jaipur stakes at six furlongs We had thoughts of running him. Five and a half furlongs up here in. Saratoga is see how he would handle that distance But we drew a very bad post. We drew the twelve colon decided to scratch and and run a week later in four star. Dave i mean he has been effective going a mile before and and You know we thought our chances were probably a little better in here than they were coming out of the twelve and the other race so You know he seemed like he was ready to run and we didn't you know we had no reason to wait any any longer than this weekend. So as a hall of famer who is settled so many big winners in your career. Bill what are some of the key things that you look for in a horse coming into a grade one race like this letting you know. He's ready to fire his best shot. Well number one. You wanna be coming in off of a good race. Which he is. He's coming in off of off a two real good races. And and you know you wanna look at the horse and make sure they're you know in good flesh and moving well and sound and you know he checks all the boxes there. I mean he's been he's been doing quite well. You know you know when you come into these kind of races. You don't wanna have to have any hiccups coming into them. You know missing works. Bruce feet whatever you know what i mean you just You want everything to go smoothly and and Feel like things have gone well Leading up to the race as far as training goes and i can say that things have gone nicely for him the race before the four star. Dave is the saratoga special. You'll send out number eleven high oak. A horse just getting started with his career. He broke his maiden june. Twenty six at belmont now comes in to his first stakes effort. Tell me a little bit more about high oak Done everything right. You know ran well in his first race got up looked like they output it in a little bit early which you know they probably will do in this race today But he seems to be determined sort of horse in in. You know we're going to give in the give him the class test today and see what what happens. I obviously there's going to be a good pace in there and we'll we'll see if he if he's if he's good enough. I think you know a lot of these times when courses haven't run but one time it's always kind of a fact finding mission to see what you've got as far as you know Quality in class in and In of course you know ability how you match up with the other horses so We're you know we're i think we're i. I'm cautiously optimistic. About his chances You know. I feel good about him. I feel good the way that he's trained and and You know now we just gotta get him out on the race track and and get the answer out there a bill before i let you go. I'll ask you for one quick comment on paradise creek because this is potentially the final arlington million day in the history of our sport and have been talking about a lot on the show this morning. Your loan win in the arlington million came in nineteen eighty-four with paradise creek. Who's by the way one of my all time. Favourite tur- forces. That was a special day for you. What you remember about paradise creek and that just i. I remember you know paradise creek in his entirety. Because i had him from you know when he was a baby and the two year old and went in his first start at belmont we ran him back on dirt. One time in the hopeful just to give him a try on dirt which didn't work out well and then of course she stayed on the turf the rest of his life but He ran against some of the very best during you know he he ran against learner. He and lur changed places of a few times on the racetrack. I think we beat him. You know a couple of times You know. I can't remember if it was his four year old year but You know he he. He raced against high quality horses and and then in his final race just got beat knows in the japan cup which going a mile and a half so you know he was a horse that was effective at a mile second in the breeders cut mile at gulfstream and when the arlington million at a mile and a quarter and then of course got touched off knows in japan cup so really a good horse. Fun horse and same same family is theatrical was so you know. I had having had some of the family for the firestone's before he was a special harsh for me record. I think in In In the manhattan when he went Mile and a quarter in one fifty seven and change. That i think that was. You know a record that i i don't know if it's still stands at belmont. I suspect maybe does. Yeah very special horse. Very special trainer in belmont bill. I know i'm i'm very sorry to lose arlington. I mean that's a that's a that's a shame one of the you know most historic of of race tracks. And and. of course you know. It was such a great place to race you particularly in the days when mr duchess wa was Totally at the helm and and He he made every owner. Feel very welcome when they came to run there. And and Really put on a great show from the i. I believe i was there for the first arlington million. I was there to watch it and I've seen quite a few of them but you know some great days in raising their. That's a huge loss for thoroughbred racing. no doubt about it and in the words of bill bill. Sorry to see it. Go bill appreciate the visit this morning. I told you i wouldn't keep you. I know you're busy. Let you get back to it all the best later today my friend. Thank you thank you uh-huh bye..

"Know him and You know certainly one that american turf like a series three year old grass horse right and though it says sperm About day for that race it really was more probably good Probably had a little bit of cut in the ground. So he's probably proven that he can handle some some given the ground Yeah he comes into but he comes into the race with a a good stretch of three races three race winning streak each race better than the one before that amount of sixteen. This is a mile and a quarter. That would be my one question mark. I really liked to see horses. Maybe coming out of a mile an eighth race to try and run against this quality of field some of these quality horses and then have to step up. He's gotta go another three sixteen of a mile further. Then he's ever gone before. And i i'm just not you know i on ground. That will probably be softer than he's ever run on before a couple of question marks for me but obviously respect for what he's accomplished and You know and obviously respect for bill mott. Who's like you said is had the horse for over a month already. I believe when when bob shift back to california from churchill. This one just came right here Pratt for those that. Keep track Pratt we'll have in lima For pletcher and eclipse in the oaks and Is back with does your And has written. Is your in the three race win streak and and what was to me. What was amazing about that. Win in the american turf was that he from style standpoint. Dave the that after you know after looking like he had he had become Part of a you know a pace the type to break his maiden win that allowance then to turn around and and really settle nicely. And and maybe part of that is pratt's prowess But i didn't you know. I i didn't give him any chance in that american turf because it looked to me like there was just too many. You know there was too much pace. And i thought. How's he going to win this as part of the pace and he wanted by not being part of the pace well look i think because of the way the mile and a quarter race is iran. He probably will be back into the pace. Mix on saturday well. And he's going to have to contend there is you know there there is at rusty's is as rusty's horse Seems there's a horse that in the opposite direction cellist who you know who Came from way off the pace at keeneland. And then was you know wire-to-wire witter and the ottoman Later on i. It's you know. I know that these races. There's a lot of money committed to these. And and i. I'm sure it'd be nice to get more international participation. They got some You know including the too heavy favorites but I i guess these races are still kind of making their way right. And you're still dealing with. And i know you don't bryant enough an issue with it but maybe others do You still pretty close ascott. You know it's still coming off the heels of You know coming back from two or three weeks after ascott. So it's it's a little bit tough to You know and the ship And maybe some of our thinking. Well if he's sending that horse here maybe that means i can go somewhere else but You know i. I do think it's the timing of it is still you know you're competing with some major races over there That these guys focused more on than than say this and travel to you. Know there's still an issue getting back like some of these folks that are coming here with these horses. I think you're gonna have to do quarantine for a week or two when they get back to To ireland in england..

Ramped up, geared up and look terrific What we all thought it was a real deep renewal of the oaklawn handicap. Thomson Todd is just now getting ready and add more or less, said he. He pretty much galloped when he won the Oakland Mile and that he's really tighten screws since then he's ready to go so. This is another race. The doesn't seem to have a whole lot of Sweden. There you could have. Pirates Punch on the lead You might have The other Brett counting horse silver, dust on or near the lead, but my by my standards surely Gabe, Sanchez. We'll be looking to get I run on Meno on Thomas Tot. He's got a little bit more early foot than than Tom stay taught. Anything else On this card there's two year olds going in the fourth the mart and Doesn't seem to be. Too Much of Too Much of a talking horse scenario at least that we've seen from the work tab, and then the some some good allowances in the middle part of the card, including that first level for phillies and mayors, Paris lights for Bill Mott and of course last week Motte with the win number five thousand that came for. for Jane, Lion and moon over Miami a kind of Nice for Jane to have that kind of distinction with with. And then there's a very good group. Led by well abled and rebellion, and just might for Michelle level. That group in the seven to that starts the late pick five It's a it's a very good card. Yeah I've got smart remark at twenty two one on the morning land picked that right he's. He's always been a real sneaky horse to me, you know. I really liked. He got his late scratch from a race couple of Fridays ago. and. I really liked him. The Race Joe Joe Sharpe wanted. Real easily, but I've always liked this Vicki owl. Oliver Steeds at. "Well this You know the indictments yesterday. Dsp can help confirm what a horse players have already known for decades That that the use of illegal drugs in racing is the major problem in the game and it's pervasive and that the industry is On its own Hasn't done anything to combat You Know I. I've been writing about what I described as the super trainers since since the nineteen eighties when when Oscar Barreira came on the scene and you know performed feats that were that just defied all the norms of a sport. He you know he claim a horse. Run a back five days later and the horse would improve tent. Likes I mean he was the leading trade or New York for four years You know just dealing with cheap claiming horses. I think the you know what you know. Oscar sent a message to the industry that there were drugs out there that that could indeed You know perform miracles and just over over the years you know we've seen We see trainers come and go who Who Wake up horses. Who again who perform feats that just defy all common sense? I you know I You know I've focused a lot of my attention over the years on the racing at Gulfstream Park Where I think the Super. You know the supervision sport is has probably been consistently week and just you know we've had a succession of of people frank per Cerro Kirk Zedi Marty Wolfson et Cetera. Who Who for a time you know just you know? We're the greatest trainers of all time. And I think you know like even before what happened yesterday if you had talked if you talk to to any horse player At Gulfstream who who's paying attention to what's going on and and said Are there any big? Who is anybody obviously cheating here? They would take two seconds to say. Well Yeah Navarro and serve and many of them would give you a third name which I won't mention because it wasn't part of the indictments but everybody recognized that Navarro Service you know had You know had some kind of an edge. That didn't make sense. I mean I'll tell you what I you know. Obviously I pay attention to speed figures. I'm looking at two issues like this but you know my you know my main focus In kind of deciding whether trainers are legitimate or not Is Looking at a couple key percentages in their statistics. I mean I've always thought that you know like a trainer who can win twenty percent of the time you know is a really outstanding trainer if you look at current guys who were guys who are active now on her in the hall of fame Steve Asmussen. It's like a twenty percent winning trainer. Bill Mott twenty one percent per his career Bob Baffert little for that over the last five years or Gate Navarro as one with twenty nine percent of his starters Jason Jason Service Twenty eight percent. You mean these guys just came from out of nowhere and they're better than bill. Maud and Steve Ashby. I don't believe it and The testing that for me is even more revealing is is the Is a trainer. A- one you can find at the click of a mouse at four the IRS. Formulator is trainers winning percentage. The first time off a claim I mean when when when when one trainer can consistently improve on horses you like not over a long period of time but overnight or in the first start since claiming when they do that consistently It certainly raises my brows. Navarro was over the last five years is one twenty four percent First Time off the claim Jason Services. One thirty five percent in this first starts after claim. I mean that's that's impossible so You know we you know like we all. We all knew that. What these you know that or specify expected what these guys are doing and You know as a journalist. I had an opportunity to you know to to talk to real your interview the trainers to to talk to racetrack owners to talk to stewards and Steve You. You made a comment earlier. That the stakeholders and race and want a level playing field. I would say they don't want a level playing field but people running race tracks just didn't want to rock the boat storage. Didn't want to rock the boat and have a big scandal on their hands. I mean owners owners flock to these trainers Who You know who who have the the worst reputations Emmy do you think Gary and Mary West? Oh we're We're regretting the lack of a level playing field when maximum security when a twenty million dollar race two weeks ago. So there is There has really been no No great emphasis within the industry took to try to clean up an issue which I think all the customers recognize is Is Problem Number One?.

"Let's bring in Jim Miller from Hawthorne race. Course. How are you, my friend? I'm doing great Pete. How are you today? Gorgeous day outside. It's a beautiful day. How is it in the Belmont Stakes is that a New York? Elmont New York. Everything looks like it's going to be okay, there weatherwise, too. So should have a fast track for racist today. And this is definitely the toughest triple crown if they go a mile and a half, probably the only time these horses will go a mile and a half in their career. That's a that's a long way. All right. We pay we all picked our horses. Let's start with a Lindsey, since she is the female on the show. Lindsey, what is your horse in gym? We'll tell you if it's going to win or lose today. Choice for today is, is bourbon war bourbon war at twelve to one Lindsay bourbon was the one that actually disappointed me in the Preakness because that was the horse that I picked them the Preakness, but everything leading up to that race. I really liked bourbon were now here's the one change that you're going to see in the Preakness. They put blinkers on the horse that I've kind of liked by goggles on the side of the horse to keep the horses, focus, it really didn't seem to work for bourbon war. So they take those blinkers off today. And I think the racist prior, or more of what you're going to see out of this horse, and I'm looking for bourbon were to sit back should come on and late MRs one that will benefit from the added distance, I think that he can get into the mix and just worry because he did disappoint me in their last out. But he gets a hall of fame. Jockey? Mike Smith writing today. So I've been definite. Plus, why do they put the blinker blinders on the horse for the Preakness? Just one of those things where if you looked at the race before in the Florida, derby, for bourbon war. He setback back early on. He closed a little bit late, but really not what they were hoping for, and what you see a lot of times out of blinkers, even though, the really useful a horse to keep their focus a lot of times, it will allow those horses to show just a little bit more early speeding didn't do a race a bit more on. And I think that was the whole for bourbon war. But really he just kind of raced evenly, the whole way through in the Preakness. Oh, what a little bit disappointing. So they're going back to the old style. And I think they were just really going to hope that breeding prevails more than anything else in the added distance when other horses are getting tired may benefit him as he can pick off some horses late the Preakness was where the jockey got thrown off the horse, right and the horse with. So that doesn't count. That horse horse horses definitely out of the mix. But the one thing about it, too. They oftentimes you will find an didn't happen in the Preakness. But oftentimes when you lose a rider that Horseheads right to the front of a field because you're not carrying that extra hundred and twenty pounds of weight. And then it really changes, how other writers have to ride the race because horses are pack animals are going to want to sit with that horse out of the leader of the pack. So really everybody else got lucky in the Preakness. That didn't go out there and body expressing go out and try to push things up on the front end. It could have been a really scary situation to turn out to be a run in the park. So boaty express, but we met a whole lot of fun, the first who likes the triple crown. Let's see if we can just get a horse race today. We're talking to Jim Miller from Hawthorne race course. What? Crazy triple crown. I'm the Kentucky Derby, the disqualification in the Preakness. You had the jockey that was thrown in the horse finished without a jockey. It's been a little weird hasn't it? The most triple crown of anything only for the fact that you get that disqualification and the Kentucky Derby. So you take on the winter for the first time in its history, the horse that turns up to win the race country. House doesn't even go back and try to go for the triple crown. They bypass the Preakness. They bypass the Bellman. So it really kind of has changed this whole sequence of racist this year. A little bit more intrigue into it because oftentimes you'll see maybe three four or five of those horses. Try to contest all three lights of the triple crown this year. We just haven't seen it. It's war of will. And that's it. So everybody else is coming back. A lot of horses that are really fresh coming into this race. And I think that makes it a really interesting race today. Okay mic homes. What's your horse today? Well, I was going to go with bourbon war, but then I thought, you know, because of the blinders, and everything then. Choice. I'm sure time. So I decided to go with spin off spin off, Mike. I love your pick spin off the horse that's going to be overlooked today. And that's what I like, especially for a race like this, because there are a lot of unknowns. Spinoff, trained by Todd Pletcher is one of the top trainers, not only in the country, but in New York to pick up an all world writer and have your Castellano in this race also. And one thing about the bell man is a lot of horses because of the distance, they are worried about position. And if a horse is going to get tired spin off as one of those horses that just kind of one pace that the whole way around, but his pace is pretty quick, and it's always up near the front end. You're going to have a couple of horses that will go out there and show a little bit of speed is via from the inside is likely to show a little bit of speed intrepid Harvard, Ray Close to spin off sits right behind those early pacesetters. And if he can get that mile and a half distance. He'll get I run on some of those closures like bourbon war, like war will spin off has a shot. He was actually one. On my top two horses in the race. And he should be fifteen or twenty two one. Well, great minds think alike, I guess. Exactly. So we'll see what spinoff, does I, but you know what a couple of bucks on a twenty to one shot gets your forty two back to win. So definitely worth a shot. There might the great thing about Jim Miller from Hawthorne race. Course you always feel like your horse is gonna win. All right, pack, I'm taking intrepid heart. Intrepid heart. Here's the here's the cool thing about intrepid heart because we just talked about spinoff and spin-off being trained by Todd Pletcher intrepid heart is trained by Todd Pletcher as well. And John Velazquez aboard the source today and intrepid heart and they last out finished third, but he is one of those very talk about bourbon warranty, blinkers off intrepid heart is going to put the blinkers on the win when you have two horses trained by the same trainer. The one thing you have to think about to strategy in a race because you don't want to have both of these horses. Go out there and beat each other up on the front end. So oftentimes one horse goes the other horse sits back. So with the horse like intrepid hard, I think he's the one that they're going to send out there and he's going to go on the front end. And maybe try to carve out those early fractions, and if he can clear off the lead. He could get brave late. But if he goes out there, and Joel from the inside pushes him along on the front end, then it sets things up. Maybe for the other Pletcher horses spin off so you couldn't see a little strategy going here in this race, but intrepid heart horse, definitely worth a look 'cause he's already raised well over the. Belmont track in that last start. So you get the little benefit over some of these other horses in this race. I'm telling you, he makes you feel like your horses gonna win. I don't know what that means. But I feel like I'm my horse is gonna win. We're gonna work together with our horses to. And finally, Jim, what is your pick for the Belmont Stakes today? Mentioned spin off his horse that I'll use in all of my plays the other horse. I'm going to look to the horse that I gave you all the way back when we were talking five weeks ago in Kentucky Derby day, and that is Tacitus on the outside. Now he's the horse that does sit down current favourite at five to two comes from another hall of fame Barnes from the barn of trainer. Bill Mott, but Tacitus he's the cool horse the grey horse, you're definitely going to be able to pick them out in the field drought, the course of today's race, but he ran a great race in the Kentucky Derby and he had to kind of weave as way through traffic work his way around there. And he ended up finishing fourth and got moved up to third in the race. But Tacitus from the outside today I think this is actually a good post for him because a mile and a half is such a long race. So it's not like you'll have to rush to get position early on a with enough speed in there. I think Tacitus just kind of settled mid pack early on. And I do expect that he's going to come running and running very quickly late. So I'm going to use Tacitus, then I'll use spin off, and then maybe a mixture of horses after that might try but those are the two horses. I really liked one two today in the Belmont Stakes. I love it in Jim. Congratulations Hawthorne race. Course you had the Bill that passed this week the sports, that's a big deal. Insane. Thank you for saying, congratulations, because really I mean, kudos to Terry lean kudos to Lewellen kudos, the maze Lutsky because this is the Bill that that's as the industry. We went from six tracks annoy down to three tracks over the last fifteen years. And now it's just ourselves Arlington park in Fairmount, and we were battling to stay alive and this Bill not only keeps us alive, but it's going to allow for racing to thrive as we move along. And that's really the key. We want to grow the sport. The Carey family's been over one hundred years here in Illinois for racing Hawthorne, one hundred and twenty five years. So this is an old sporting venue, and we're really looking forward to the opportunity to grow. And this is just a huge Bill for us, and we're so excited. It's going to mean a lot of buildings. Maybe we have to bring Mike over by to visit, but we're going to be very busy at all. You know, you bring that up that means jobs because, you know it changes a lot of things. And I've known Tim Kerry for twenty years and his long as I've known him. I know that he's been trying to push through this Bill. It's taken twenty years, and they find. Got it. And it's incredible. You talk about jobs. I mean, we're not just talking about a couple of hundred jobs, we're talking tens of thousands of jobs, because the revitalizes the breeding industry in Illinois, as well. And you're talking twenty thousand jobs, just within the agriculture and for the breeding industry, and then all the jobs that are going to be for the construction of these locations, and then all the jobs that are added for the full time, ration- it, really, it is a huge Bill saved a family run business in the industry in the state. They probably right. Jim Miller from Hawthorn Jim. You're the best man have a great weekend. Good luck to all of you guys with all of your selections. Maybe we'll get a three horse dead heat on the wire. And everybody can win see I'm telling you, this is what he does. He makes everybody feel like they're going to win. Thank you, Jim, three one, two nine eight one seventy two hundred Mike homes this year. If you have a question about your house home, whatever you need. He can answer it. We're gonna check news next and we'll start taking some calls right after news on seven twenty.

"To have you along with us for the next two hours as we edge closer to the first Saturday in may, which means plenty of derby talk on the program here today, you got a big one down south Florida with the grey to fountain of youth stakes and that's a race that it looks like it could go any number of ways if you're trying to pick the winner, and they're very talented group of three roads set to go to the post, and we're gonna talk more about that one throughout the show here this morning JT just sixty three days nine hours, forty seven minutes. And now fifty seven seconds until that first Saturday in may. Well, I'm glad we caught up because. It's been awhile since we've had the countdown. So now now we're aware. The court members are aware. Yeah. I was unable to be here on the program last week. You Anthony did a great job filling in appreciate that. And feels good to be back in the saddle and ready to roll here for this road to the Kentucky Derby, and I mentioned that race the fountain of youth stakes today at Gulfstream is is a race that really you could see almost anybody emerges the winter. There are some really talented three year olds in that group. Yeah. It's been fun to listen to the trainers this week as we interviewed him on express bet radio Anthony. And Anthony did most of the heavy lifting. He's down in Florida. So, but it was it was great to listen to me to highlight to read between the lines adding and see what they say. But. Tough field. There's at least six horses that you know, have a bona fide chance to win. And you know, there's there's others that could emerge. So it's going to be interesting to watch the whole car down. There is really sensational too. Great car today and people are going to enjoy the racing down there. You know, it's interesting to think about what could be looking ahead to that that I Saturday's in may in the Kentucky Derby hidden, scroll is going to be the favourite in the fountain of youth today. Nine to five on the morning line. He's only raced once and he dominated that maiden race in the slop at Gulfstream back on January twenty six he won by fourteen lengths for hall of fame trainer. Bill Mott and. People say, okay, it was sloppy track. And you know, he just overpowered the field whatever you want to say he still won by fourteen links. Now, they're talking about him not only being the favourite for the fountain of youth. But if he wins this race, maybe being the horse to beat. In the Kentucky Derby, he didn't start that race wasn't until January twenty six. So all of a sudden we're looking at a year where you could have two potential big-name forces that did not start at two and all of a sudden could maybe we end up with with back to back winners of the derby horses that did not start too. So the curse of Apollo. Well, we kind of got rid of that. I get..
