"Was always tall and very nervous. Then we warming up with the pony and he wasn't he wasn't happy. It wasn't himself that day. And I don't think it was terrible race. He still finished like four lands behind, but I think he still, you know, it wasn't his best race for sure. And I don't think he run any close to his ability. Is that something junior that you'll have in the back of your mind when you meet rocket can in the paddock before The Kentucky Derby? Will you be thinking, okay, I know he got keyed up in the Arkansas Derby pre race. There's a 150 160,000 people here now. Is that something you're going to be thinking about? Okay, I need to make sure I do a little extra on my part to keep him calm. Yes, you know, I actually have a little talk with Bill Maher and we kind of went through it just different scenarios in cases is directing up or started getting nervous or anything like that. So I would probably have to figure out how I feel in my horses during the post parade. I will have to probably have to change some tactic maybe walk behind the pony and maybe take him away from the point after that warming up by myself or maybe stay with the pony. Everything will depend and how he's acting and how he's feeling in the posterior. Bill Matt made the decision to put blinkers on rocket can for today's Kentucky Derby. That's an interesting move, typically you don't see trainers making equipment change for a big race like this. Was that a conversation that the two of you had and why do you think that that can benefit him? You know, that was a conversation we had after even before the holy book. I remember, you know, we always thought he had the ability we always tell for some reason when he was about to pass the last couple horses, he can stay with them and didn't want to keep going. Stay with them together and even though the Hollywood we won on that, we're going to we're talking about it and we went into the fontan of you know it still was running good and we're still thinking like maybe we have to add some blinkers at some point, but since he was running good, we couldn't we didn't want to change anything. But after his last race, even though they have nothing to do with the way he runs, we decide that I think it would be a good idea just coming into Derby and at some blinkers and make sure he's sharp into the race and he's more focused going into this race. Talking with Jackie junior alvarado here on the horse racing radio network rocket can is his mount in The Kentucky Derby. We'll talk about Cody's wish in a minute. But I want to go back to your first Kentucky Derby junior in 2016 with Muhammad, who ended up finishing fourth. You came back in 2018 with enticed who finished 14th and then tax finished 14th and 2019, but mohen kind of gave you a little bit of a thrill because he was making that big run from off the pace. Was there a moment in that race that you said, oh my goodness, I might actually win The Kentucky Derby? Yes, yeah, to be honest. More than I wanted. But that's the way it pays with the right with falling, but yeah, when you start for the 5 poll, start kind of like asking him a little bit, just to start getting closer and closer and he was there for me so coming to the half a month or he still picking up horses one by one, I won't deny. I did get very excited and right when we turn for home. I knew it was going to be tough because he just didn't keep going forward. He just kind of stays level up and just stay at the same pace, but I thought it still was a great race. In front of me, finished like Nyquist gone running exaggerated like three unbelievable horses. So it was a great race, but yeah, I did got excited that I remember. James Graham was with me earlier and I asked him about having been there done that and having that Derby experience. And we'll hear athletes and other sports talk about the game slowing down as they get more into their careers. And they start to learn about the game and not let it overwhelm them. And I assume it's the same thing for a jockey with The Kentucky Derby. Is there something to be said for having some experience in this race? Yes, definitely. You know, after I rode that horse Muhammad, I remember I would like full of excitement. I would never a lot. And in the other couple of races after the couple therapies after my first interview, they were closed but not as much nervous and the excitement is still there, but you are able to kind of handle everything much better. Now for me, this for their, I think I'm just very excited more than nervous. Well, we'll see if junior alvarado can add a Derby win to his resume, which is very impressive. I mentioned those 2000 plus career wins. One of those came in last year's breeders cup dirt mile at Keenan with Cody's wish and I remember you and I talking afterwards and you talked about the moment and what it meant to you, but also what it meant to the owners and the connections of Cody's wish, which is a fantastic story. So to get a leg up aboard him and the Churchill down stakes on the Derby undercard. What's that going to be like? You know, it's very excited too. Being waiting this whole year, I've been guarding in the winter and remember a lot of people coming up to me and asking me when this code is wishing on it. When it's cold, it's always running. Like I say, little has been building up and I knew he was going to run 30 day. And getting away until I get the leg up to get on the college wish. Talk about the relationship that you have with

And he has long shot Gilded Age in the traverse stakes and then speakers corner the morning line favorite in the Pat O'Brien. So it is a busy day, but that's nothing new for the Hall of Famer who has saddled more than 5200 winners in his stellar career and still going strong. And I know he's looking forward to his son Riley getting a start on his own going out on his own coming up very, very soon. All right, Bill Matt set to join me here in just a few minutes. We'll get a hold of him. As we await bill on a very busy morning, I told you at the top of the show that today's Travers very well May and probably should. Decide a three year old championship. If not, if not a definitive three year old champion, it certainly should give us a FrontRunner. To win the three year old championship because outside of modon ago, who is sidelined with bone bruising, the bell mount winner. And taba, you really have all the major players competing in the travelers later today. And I posed this question and I'm going to pose this one to Dale Romans and Tim wilkin coming up at ten 30 eastern as well. I asked them, I said, you know, I'm going to ask them a victory by rich strike. Rich strike, the 81 Derby upsetter, a victory by rich strike in the traverse today. Is that enough to thrust him to the forefront? In the three year old champion conversation. I don't know if it's cements a three year old title for rich strike. If he wins today. But it certainly narrows that field down. In my opinion. The only horse in the traverse. With two grade one victories on his resume is not epicenter, it ain't zanden in an 8 early voting. And it's

"Dreaming that when you're a kid, but it didn't last too long. I hope you look pretty quick. What position did you play in football? Well, we call that middle guard. It was a defensive center. I played right across from the center. Yeah. I like the defensive line. I was pretty good at, I liked it. And that was just in high school. Just in high school, yeah. I played mostly I was a hockey player at that time. I mean, I played a lot of hockey, but in high school, we dressed all in play football. You had to have something in the winter time. Yeah, and every kid that grows up in Canada wants to be a hockey player, right? Back then, everybody was we had ranks in every street corner and the parks all had ranks and we played hockey in the summertime. We play on the street. You know, that was our passion back then, you know, basketball was getting bigger. And soccer and lacrosse was big, but hockey was the one. With your interest in other sports, did you ever think, well, maybe I won't make a career in horse racing. Maybe I'll do something different. No, I always knew horses were for me. Yeah, yeah, and it's been a relationship that has lasted 50 years for my special guest here, Dan vela here on trainer talk, presented by facing tipton. So you go to work and you start learning from some of the folks with the show horses and then you move on to working on the backside at woodbine. Where do things go from there? What was kind of the first moment when you said, man, this is going to be my life. Well, I knew right from the start, it's what I wanted to do. The person that kind of gave me the push in the right direction was a fellow from Western Canada named Jerry Mormon. Jerry trained for chef free farms, and I still train actually. It's an odd thing, but Steven shafts. Who I train for now, it was his father, Jerry, that it was my first real breakthrough job. I became an assistant trainer for Jerry Mormon and not a pretty solid education there. I worked with Chris Rogers, who was an outstanding rider and they were both great guys and great characters and aggressive horsemen and liked what they were doing. And that kind of where I turn the corner before that, I was, you know, you kind of know what you want to do, but you don't know how to get there. But yeah, it's Chris Rogers and Jerry Marvin, especially Jerry. He was he was the key for me to getting to the next level and learning how to work that much harder and learning about the horses and to spend a lot of time that worked very hard for quite a while with him, but enjoyed it. Yeah, you mentioned that education working with Jerry. What are some of the things that he taught you that have served you well throughout your career? Probably the biggest thing. I remember saying it many times. You know, they're each individuals. You have to treat them like you can't train horses, you know, you can't train them all the same. They're individuals. They have individual personalities. They have individual physical characters and he really was a big on that. And you had to learn what the key to each horse was. You know, what made them tech and what made them even better? And happy horse wins races. That was his thing. And I learned a lot about the character of horses. You know, over the years the way we get the vet has changed, you know, we don't train quite as aggressively as we used to. We don't run as aggressively as you know, I don't know if the courses have changed or we've changed or it's a bit of both, but yeah, the individual horse, that's the key to real success, I think. I can't tell you Dan, how many times I have had trainers come out in this program and mention that very same thing. Treat them all as individuals. The other word that comes up a lot is patience. Is that a big key? Well, if you don't have it when you first start, you learn it very quick because yeah, if you're not patient, if you I write everything in my books and my training charts in pencil because you have to have a plan, but in this business, you have to be able to change it very quickly. If you don't set a plan out, you're probably won't get to where you're going. But if you try to stick to it too hard, you'll probably have heard some horses on the way. So you have to be very flexible and they teach your patients right from the very start. You mentioned writing things down in pencil, are you still doing things the old way and doing things by hand? I do. It's the way my head works. I've been doing it that way for a long time. I have the old style training charts. I mean, we do our bookkeeping and stuff all that so I'm on computer now and I spend a lot of time reading about horses and stuff on the Internet, but the trading charts that I take to work every day are still in, you know, there's still this square boxes and I go a long daily with them and like I said, I do them in pencil, so we can adjust to what the horse needs. That term old school is often tied to people like suge magee and Bill Matt and Wayne Lucas because they've been around the game for so long. And they've been doing things a certain way and doing it at a high level for so long. And they really haven't, they've changed their approach, but they still do things as they used to do them in some respects. So Dan, when you think about what it means to be old school what does that mean to you as a horse trainer? Well, yeah, that's a hard one. I mean, I guess it's some of the things you are.

"I think he could have won last time out in the Central Park for if not for all those issues that you detailed so beautifully just moments ago. The outside post should actually help him stay out of that kind of trouble. And I feel bad for Todd pledge. He's having a slow start to the meat only winning 12 of his first 26 starters that he sent out a cool 46%. He's got another big chance he's got a few chances actually to win the dania beach race 9 tomorrow at Gulfstream. Final stake race on the Gulfstream card tomorrow is the $150,000 mucho macho man stakes. Now this raises for the newly turned three year olds going a one turn mile, it's actually not a points race on the road to The Kentucky Derby, three other stakes this weekend are the Jerome at aqueduct. The smarty Jones at Oakland, the sham at Santa Anita, this race is not. I have a feeling that will change at some point in the future. Only a field of 6 here, bob, but some pretty lively runners, including number two strike hard who's coming off a monstrous win at this distance against allowance foes last time. Yeah, that was an intrigued by the number 6 horse graphic detail in here. Practical joke his Sierra decided marvelous season freshman season at so many good first out winners, somebody horses that had three or four runs and just really exceeded expectations. This is an expensive one. He cost $320,000 in the January sale when he was at when he was a yearling and really Bill Matt is one of those stables that just shouldn't be gay, you mentioned early earlier doesn't really have them completely cranked up first time out. You know, usually they go out there for education and they're well met, they're fit. They just haven't completely turned all the screws on them. And this horse overcame that and really showed a lot of determination down the center of the track at Belmont winning is made under it can sell by a half length on November 6th, switches to sigh as off to just a fantastic start at Gulfstream. And I think that the one turn miles should suit us out of a Dixie in mayor. I think it's a big shot from the very likeable outside post. All right, so graphic detail for bob 5 to two second choice on the line. I went to the favorite number two strike hard. Just super impressed by his last win. Now I do think he kind of had it all his own way that day. He was in post 8 in an 8 horse field. He was the 7 to 5 favorite. It would certainly was not quite the competition that he's going to be seeing tomorrow. But I think anywhere close to the way he ran last time out makes everyone else have to improve to beat him. And that's why I put them on top. Maybe he's just a horse that since they added blinkers last time out. He's a different horse. I don't know. He's going to have to prove it against tougher competition from a lesser post position if you will two to one is a fair price though. I think strike card is going to be tough to beat. I'm going to take him. Bob goes with the 6 graphic detail in race tenant Gulfstream tomorrow, the mucho macho man. We're going to take another break. When we come back, we're going to head out west. They've got four graded stakes on the Saturday card at the great race place tomorrow. This is the weekend stakes preview presented by nyra betts.

Spoon over Miami for Bill Matt. 3000 for trainer Mark Cassie. Lucas a 6 win. Barefoot with another incredible milestone, but it was old for shutting the game with number 1000 for the great Trevor McCarthy. Here's 2000 for Nick zito. Steve asks him is now North America's all time leading trainer. Now here's Mike peda. Hello again, everyone and welcome to the show, trainers listen to. It is trainer talk and it's all presented by phasic tipton right here on the horse racing radio network. Mike penna baron of the backstretch, excited as always to have you with me for what promises to be an exciting hour on today's show should be a lot of great information and a lot of things that you'll enjoy hearing over the course of the next hour. You are listening all across North America on Sirius two 19 XM two O one and streaming live or podcast on our HRI website and of course you're doing that at horse racing radio dot net. Well, today's guest began his training career in the early 1970s. And he is fast approaching the 1300 win milestone. And if his recent success is any indication, it's not going to take him long to get there. The 70 year old conditioner has come out firing at the recent fairgrounds meet currently tied for second in the standings behind Ron faucher and Jose Camus, whom, by the way, you heard on this very same show a couple of weeks ago. He may be best known for one very special Friday afternoon beneath the twin spires on May 2nd, 1997, when his talented three year old Philly blushing KD added her name to the long list of memorable Kentucky oaks winners. And it is my true pleasure to welcome trainer, Sam David junior to trainer talk presented by Facebook tipped in here today. Sam appreciate the visit. Thank you, Mike. Yeah. You know, we're going to spend a lot of time talking about blushing KD in that run that you had with her. But let's start by looking back on the role that you've been on at fairgrounds, which has been bolstered by, of course, that four wind day on December 5th and I think what makes that even more remarkable Sam is the fact that you entered 5 horses on that 8 race program. One of them was an also eligible and with scratched, which left you with four, and they all won. Incredible. Yeah, that was a really big day. Like you say, a lot of people win four or 5 races a day, but they usually have 8 or 9 in there. So to run four and win four, that was really a special day for us. I don't think I've ever done for a day. Now I was trying to think back and my brother who's been with me for years that said, we won three in a second one time, but I don't think everyone for. So I'm assuming that he's right. Yeah, I know you can be confident going into a day and you can like the horses that you're gonna send out there. But look, there's more ways to lose a race than there is to win one. When you sat back at the end of the day and said, oh my gosh, we just went four for four. What's that like for a trainer? Oh, I mean, really exciting. It was great. And like you said, we knew we had four live shots, but even with live shots you don't usually have everything go your way or horses don't fire or something like that. But that day, everything just went perfect. We rode marcelino Padres, who won 5 for 5 that day. So he was riding really heads up and good competitive races and that really helped us a lot, I think he did a great job for us, but the horses all ran well and that's something you don't usually get one of them out of the four that throws in a clunker throws in Delray so we were really excited to have them all around that good for us. Horse players will play a pick for, and they'll get to the final leg after winning the first three, and they're anxious to try to hit the full pick four. They have their fingers crossed. They're calling on every superstition that they've ever thought of. How about for a trainer? You get to that last leg. You've won three. Are you thinking, okay, it's been a great day. No matter what happens here, we've had a wonderful day or are you thinking, man, I want to go four for four. Well, I mean, we want to go four for four, of course, but and the horse in the last leg was a live horse. I felt like he was 5 and I was a little concerned down the backside when he got back a little further than I thought he should be. And I said, we probably ran out of luck, but he did he dug in real good for split horses and came running probably his best race for us. So that was something that we were really excited about, but you never you're hoping to go forward before, but you're really happy. If we don't want to three, we sure have been really happy with it, you know. Yeah, it's so hard to win one. Yeah, it's so hard to win one and I've heard jockeys and they've talked to me on this show about getting in the zone. And they'll have a 5 win day. Like you said, like you said, your rider did that day. And you just get into the zone. Do trainers ever kind of find some kind of zone where everything you're doing with horses just seems to be clicking at a certain time in your barn? Oh, definitely. There's an old saying, when you're doing good, you can run the pony over there and he'll win for you. So you get in the same kind of zone. It's just one of those things you just can't seem to do anything wrong and hopefully we have a meat like that instead of just a day. But everything's really running good for us here at the fairgrounds. We came in a little different this year. We didn't run quite as hard over the summer because we felt we're going to be down at evangeline. So the owners of most of my horses, the Hernandez and Jon dug we all said, let's just kind of press it them all up and get them ready for the fairground. So we knew we felt like we could come in here and have a big meat. But we're just still got to work here even though you feel like it and you do everything you plan on a lot of times it doesn't come together for you, but so far we felt like everything we've taken over there is run the race. So that's a big plus for us. Yeah, it gets better because those four winners actually capped off a stretch where you won 5 consecutive races at the fairgrounds going back to your previous winner there. So it was quite a stretch. And I mentioned earlier that it put you near the top of the trainer standings now. Do you have enough firepower to stick with some of those guys throughout the meat? Oh, probably not. But as long as our horses run good and continue to win, I'd really like to see my owners when the leading owner titled more than I mean not more than me. I like where to, but I just don't think I have the horses that they have or the tech forces that can continue on the win. But my owners really they've been in for a long time. I'm talking to Keith and Earl Hernandez and John duvel their partners shipped here that breeds towards their own and they've been in the game for a long, long time. And it would really be a feather in our cap. They could come away with the leading owner title here at the fairgrounds. They're pretty much strictly campaigning most of their home.

"And if Bill Matt thought that Frank rock couldn't win in this race because she can't have Lasix, I would think that he would have found a spot elsewhere for rank Franks rockette to run. I think Frank's rockette towers over this field. The last two times out, she's lost to bells the one and club car. I think those horses would be enormous favorites in this race. I tried to find something else I liked in here. I think Bronx beauty. Number 7 is coming out of a couple of pretty solid races. Number 5 center isle. I certainly respect winning back to back races. I don't think anyone in this field is remotely in Frank's rockettes class. And you might be on to something and you might know something, but to me, just looking at the PPs, Frank's rockette should beat this field. Well, I would say if you look at our PPs, I'll agree with that. If she runs her raise, she should beat this field and beat this field fairly easily. I'm just not sure her race comes in a race where she can't run on Lasix and she's run without the medication Lasix, three of her last 5 starts. And coincidentally, those are the further the way she's cotton from the winner's circle in any of the races. I know she's facing bells the one or Wisconsin and club car. But let's face it, she was three to 5 against constantin in the winning colors earlier in the year running without Lasix and was very dull down the lane. I think they centered a Prairie Meadows to run in the $100,000 sailor simply because Prairie Meadows was one of the places where you could still run on Lasix in stakes races. A lot of the big tracks have kind of gotten away from that. Prairie Meadows and a few others have not at least of yet. And that's what I think is happening with Frank's rockette. You may be right. Maybe she's just too good for this field. And that's very possible. I'm going to go with number 5 center aisle. I like what I've seen from her since she's moved from the Chad Brown bar to the pala lobo barn. I don't think she's lost to step at all. I think she can show speed. I think she can win from off the pace. And I just like the form that she's in right now. So I'm going to take the second choice. Number 5 center aisle to continue the ball rolling and get her third straight win Louis SAE is picking up the mount for the injured Joel Rosario on number 5 center aisle Franks rockette for Dave center aisle for me in the 8th race at Gulfstream tomorrow, the grade three sugar swirl. "Right, my thanks to the jury boys for joining us. One last Friday, jury. Oh. It's so sad. Always good to catch up with James and Scott. And I will say I recorded the first part before I talk to the boys for the jury. They were open to recording like on Tuesday. So we might keep the jury in the Thursday spot. We'll see. We'll see. We will figure it out. Next week, as I said, I usually go pretty guest list next week, but I already got one book, and I might just go ahead and book a second. So we'll see. But it will be a Monday through Thursday. And we kind of would have been that anyways because Christmas Eve is next Friday in the New Year's Eve's next Friday. So really the schedule would have been Monday through Thursday the next two weeks anyways. But then it'll just be like that hopefully for the next 200 weeks or however long they let me keep doing this show, which I hope is forever. I told somebody, if I could, if I could do a long-term contract at the tracks I am at and to inspire podcast, do it in a heartbeat. Right now, let's sign the paperwork. Let's do it. We can preview some fun races down at tech Gulf Stream 5 stakes events. We'll talk about those here in a second. The New York bread aqueduct race is nice steaks at Oakland, the tinsel, so it is. Yeah, the tinsel stakes, 200,000 older routers. I thought it was interesting lone rock shows up in here. It was kind of become the king of the mile and 5 8 mile and three quarters mile and a half kind of route races. But he was very good going a mile on a mile in a 16th back in the day. Bill Matt and diodoro kind of trade it off claiming him. Diodorus had him ever since then, and I can't imagine he's going to be like not good at a mile and an 8th. It feels like he's just good, whatever distance, but some good runners in here. Huge big league for John Ortiz, so we just handed the show. John's got mucho in the allowance right before that steak. It's just a non conditioned $120,000 allowance at Oakland. Sir Alfred James is in there, long range toddy, who you guys, of course, no. And mucho, who we talked about with the John could have a big weekend at Oakland park coming up because mucho is super live, he's three O one on the morning line against CZ rocket who we know is kind of not been his CC rock itself as of late hasn't been running bad. He's just, he's just getting behind good horses. Doctor shivu and ginobili passing those kind of horses is not easy. And you know, I mean, passing whitmore wasn't easy, but he did that last year. But that's a really, really good race. The tinsel along with loan rock, a tenfold, who's almost won a couple of races out in New Mexico. He's a funny one. A horse made a 1 million 2. I mean, if you hit the board enough big races, and he won a couple big ones early on. Like you're gonna do that. Warriors charge who, you know, kind of was I always thought I need to lead type and he's now he hasn't won in a long time, not since 2020, but he was close last time out and he's kind of proven that he can come from off the pace a little bit, I guess. I don't know if they're going Thomas Shelby who's to was inside us is a total speed type, and I got to think Thomas Shelby's deodoro. He's got in there to hook things up for loan rock, right? Like that's that's got to be what the case is with that. Overt aqueduct. I want to save the Gulfstream races for the last because I looked at those the longest and have more opinions on those. But the New York stallion series races. And as I said earlier in the show, like if you have a New York bread that has any kind of ability or New York stallion, you kind of got to go after this. I really liked in the 8th race which is the Philly edition. The horse bank on Ana who was beaten to the maiden race, but I thought it was a very good battling maiden race and got the optics comment of grit. And whenever I see the grit comment, I take notice because it usually means that this horse just showed grit. Has heart. And I also think that's such a good quality and a racehorse this number came back pretty high, whether or not you get 8 to one. Is possibly in question, but we'll see. You're talking about a maiden who has it won. So it makes sense that it would be a little bit higher in the morning lining, especially against some horses who have won good maintenance. You get how do you make your money who was a stakes winner at presque isle? In a second in another state, it would bind, so you know, deserve a horse like that, morning match is 8 to 5 coming off a nice win at parks. There's Bill modor who's a maiden also yo 'cause another one who kind of made a really nice I mean it was beaten four.

Barefoot with another incredible milestone, but it was old for shutting the game with number 1000 for the great Trevor McCarthy. Here's 2000 for Nick zito. Steve asks him is now North America's all time leading trainer. Now here's Mike peda. Hello again, everyone, and welcome to the show trainers listen to it is trainer talk presented by Facebook tipton on the horse racing radio network. Mike panna baron of the backstretch, happy to have you with me for the next hour. You are listening all across North America on Sirius two 19 XM two O one or you're streaming us live or podcasting us on our end website at horse racing radio .NET. Well, just about two weeks into the 2021 2022 fairgrounds meet. The trainer leaderboard may not look the way you would expect. The name at the top of the list is not Cox. It is not Amos it ain't Stidham, not stall or foch. Instead, the leading trainer through the first two weeks of racing is a Venezuelan born former jockey who took out his trainer's license after a riding act as it, which resulted in a broken neck and it ended that chapter of his life, but is so often happens when one door closes another one opens. In today's guest, has seized his new opportunity. Watching his stable grow, and his wind total increase nearly every single year since saddling his first horse in 2013. Please join me in welcoming fair grounds leading trainer Jose to train her talk presented by phasic tipton. Jose, welcome, my friend. Well, thank you. Hello to everybody. To enjoy this way to know about trainers and everything you guys doing and like you say when one door is closed. Another one is open. I thought I am going to be a Jackie for all my life and we're in 2011. You know, we got we got by step and I brought my neck and it was a really biased berries and it gave me a year to recovery and what that pretty much ended all my career as a Jackie and I really don't know what way would take after that and you know thank you to my wife that you held me a lot to encourage me to be a trainer and I never thought I would be a trainer and so we're here today to show people that nothing is impossible and we're proud that we're doing really good and like you say every year since we started, you know, we go and step by step and we grow every year and we tend to guide that, you know, everything will go good. Well, and thank God that you're okay because that spill in 2011 and evangeline downs was extremely scary. As you're laying there, Jose, did you know that something was seriously wrong or were you thinking, hey, I'm just dinged up again. Well, really, to be honest with you, no, because when I hit the ground, I just, you know, I lose everything. I don't know what happened. I don't know that, you know, there was broke my neck and when I woke up, I was in the hospital. To find out what happened and you know, they told me that it was okay that they just go to look at it to look at me and see what was going out. They don't want to talk to me about it in there that I got my new broke. And the next day, you know, they told me that I broke, you know, forbade the bride and but I'm going to be okay and I'm going to be paralyzed. And he's going to take time to recovery and then tell me a year. So first, you know that when that happens, you're not sure that will be okay. So because I can move my leg, my arm and everything and I was just really sore. But I can move my neck. So the next day when I find out, you know, I felt like crying. You know, because I was doing really good at that time. And I thought it would be my gear. I said, Jackie, trying to change the opportunity. And I thought I got my opportunity at that time, but it was pretty sure because I never said that you know that I'm going to get hurt. Nobody does. And that was it. Did you think even at that point that you were still going to ride again? Yes. Because when he told me as well, he's not about to go to take maybe 8 to ten weeks. Did you be bad to ride? Okay, well, that's good. But I know he's out of me, I feel like, you know, it can be right because I have so much pain. And I feel like one of my nerds, it was, you know, tied with a tendon. And I got hit every day. To this day, I still have it. You know, especially when you get cold, I feel like, oh, my hair's gonna flow. And I said, you know what? I told my wife, I don't think I'm gonna.

"Had mccracken and Stidham had win, win, win. Is that right? So yeah, it's like, yeah, you're right. If those guys bail out on them, it's going to be more like just they're going to be having to try to reach out and get Barnes from my cheaper and cheaper racing venues that they're going to track horses to take their place. Now the good thing the positive thing about Tampa Bay downs is that they're still going to have full fields. And betters are still going to love playing it. And that may be the end of whether they have the most. The better horses running there, they're still going to have full fields, because let's face it, people want to be in Tampa in the wintertime. It's a great spot to be. Absolutely. It's a real gem there. And you know, the one thing though is the track is that it's you know it's small. It's not a big facility. It is. It's pretty nice when you get there. It seems like the horseman really liked the racing services, the surfaces, both the main track and the turf course and feel like they're good for their horses. So the place has all those advantages, has all those, you know, has all those things that are favorable and going for it. But, you know, it's the person that are important. They make that's ultimately the most important thing. And I didn't even know they weren't even they were that low this winter and there had been a little bit of concern like that because and that was trombetta not stiff, who I was thinking of, but with win win win. With win win win. Yeah. But we can remember the site for Mike trombetta watching win win, win, winning in the slop at Saratoga where you couldn't see him anywhere. He was so far back and he's watching on the television and he just from nowhere comes flying down The Crown of the course at Saratoga to get up and win and Mike trombetta said it was like the greatest victory of his career. Yeah, that was like the forgo, that was like sprinting too. Yeah, he went last the first in that race. But Bill Matt, you're right. He shipped in tacitus and, you know, he ran at Tampa Bay in the Sam F Davis, and Todd put your head always dreaming running and maiden and allowance races at Tampa Bay in the winter. So there's been more Derby winners prepping over that racetrack in recent years. There's been Derby winners prepping over that race track in recent years and this week is a good example like with the ramps and there hasn't been a remsen winter in a long time when the Derby that Kentucky jockey club last week, you would think it'd be an advantage to win that race and have that race over the track. But just with the timing with the breeders cup juvenile and horsepower wanting more time is like one part of it, I think. You know, it just doesn't get perhaps the feels just aren't that strong year after year. We'll see this year. That'd be a good thing for anybody to weigh in on, but though whether or not they think that small happy is a serious Derby hopeful, 'cause I don't know what you thought, Bobby, but I was very impressed with him. Yeah, he was he was really good. And my only thing I'm going to say that, by the way, the last horse that won the rems and to go on the win, the Derby was thunder gulch in 1994. They actually had a run they had three of four years that the remson winner won the Derby for Jen was going in there in pine bluff in 1991 the renson in 91 and then go for gen and 93 and thunder gulch in 94. And that's the last time a remson winner has gone on to win The Kentucky Derby. But my feeling is, you know, it's way too early to figure out who's going to do what the horses that look good, the beginning in December, who knows if those horses will even be at the starting gate the first Saturday in May. It's a tough go. But so far, like what I've seen from these chat bots there was the pretense, Bobby. He won the print. He rents, he got beat in that Derby by lily T oh, that's right. That's right, I apologize. Who he had beaten in the Arkansas Derby. There you go. Okay, we're going to take another break when we come back. I got another question for you James. It will not be as controversial, but it'll still be a tough question. You're listening to the dot com call in show here on horse racing radio network. This is the prisoner dot com call in show. "You know, because I was talking about where is Goldberg, but the Oscar the first goal. No one cares about that. No, I know, I know. But then, you know, listen to one after 90 minutes, you know, with a big chance to win the first Premier League after so many years. You know, those fun minutes unbelievable. I think I have no words to describe that moment. What was the amazing? You know, with the chime and you know, I love Libya. Very good. Riley, what was it like playing against the playmaker like Raquel meet? Oh boy. Such a naturally talented player. And mercurial. You didn't really know what you were going to get from the tail now until they've all got to his feet and then you knew full well, how incredibly talented he was. Half of the time his shoes were on time when he was playing. This guy's doing a slow jog around the feeling you're thinking. We got him, and then he got on the ball. And you didn't have him. He had you. He was in full control. You were not. He was outstanding. He was special. I was absolutely amazing. You can go on YouTube and watch so many clips on him and you can spend hours watching him. You know, what videos of him because he was absolutely fantastic. The true genius, true genius. Because of his personality, sometimes confrontational, sometimes just he didn't quite understand what his perspective was. He became somewhat unpopular, but the guy on the field was incredible with the ball at his feet. He said you followed him, of course, when he was here. Yeah, and he was a curious player as well because everything happened slowly. Yes, but it happened very quick at the same time. So you have this sense that he's not really making an effort. He's not really trying and then boom. They play the part that everything would open up. Everything would be clear, and you get this sense that it's all chaotic, and then it'll be given sense every time the ball came to him and he was just a brilliant player. It's true that at the end of his time at the reality didn't end well. Partly because of that character that you're talking about partly because of the sense of kind of confrontation with the club's president book, but what a footballer. Sorry about the Olympic Games back in 2008 in Beijing in China. It was Raquel Messi. He went and timber sorry de Maria and aware of front. He was just someone calls up later. Did he score in that QPR game? Yeah. The first gold people are people forget about come on. People forget about it. Lovely to watch these four guys. Incredible. Did you win gold? Yes. It was serial killer Romero. Did you win gold? Ah, sorry. Gold medal. The gold medal, we won against Nigeria the final. Where's your gold medal now? Do you have a good in my house? I call like a museum. I'm disappointed. I thought you were going to undo your shirt. I would wear it everywhere. Never take it. That's simple. Simple no. Pablo is Argentina winning the next World Cup. So it's going to be difficult. I think so many people want messy. To win the World Cup. Come on. He went absolutely everything with the club. You want copper medica, I don't think the World Cup's going to be massive for him and of course I went Argentina to win but it's going to be tough. It would be as big as a gold medal, though would it? Man, we've been very close in Brazil. Yeah. We lost to Germany. I remember. We were there. Yes, equine. Okay, to see it, goodness, man, this is one of you. And all your years in Spain, who is the one player you thought would make it to the top but didn't. Wow. Yeah. I don't know the answer to that. Yeah, that's tough. I'm trying to think of a player that really play that really stood out and we all thought was going to be great was Jesse and it hasn't really happened around Madrid. He was the outstanding player in that realm of youth team. Yeah. Bill Matt is hard to think of a really obvious candidate. Romeo maybe? Yeah, Rapinoe. Yeah, I've got his debut against Cardiff, his debut for Real Madrid was extraordinary, genuinely had never seen anything like it. And actually, to be fair, I'm going to slightly defend robina here. I think he was seen as a complete failure. I don't think he was. I think it was the wrong team the wrong time for him and perhaps didn't reach the level people expected, but he's still did things that were different to other players, did things that were better than other players. Who would you prefer as a next door neighbor party wise, rabino, or can I wear them? I just prefer to stay in the other side. What was that like when he came in? Well, imagine it was massive signing man city to pay 45 million at that time. He was ridiculous money. He came from brand Madrid. And it was basically when everything just started. And it was really good in training. For the Premier League, you know, for intensity of the game, it was different. You know, in England, you know, you know, you have to run up and down during 90 minutes, very direct. And he wanted to fall into fit every single time. Right. He came in January and he was like to pick character. It was different and they were sharing the same position and you know he was like big competition for Robinho when when Bella became. Because he was really good at that time. Yeah, that mindset I imagine was completely different, yeah, because and obviously elano and other Brazilian was there. More Brazilians. But I mean is that presumably like I've seen ravina was good last season. He's got a few great goals. He's got a game Chelsea. He's deviated for Manchester City. Right. With three gig. But yeah, I really enjoy my time with Rubin. Look at that. Look at that. I don't know how well you can translate this joke, but there was a joke that used to go round in Madrid when rovinj was there, which was why the people call Robinho the triathlete. So he runs. He does the step over and then nothing happens. He's the climb out the window around Madrid to avoid the media and to be fair he wasn't the only one. Quite a few other kids. Okay, final one. Pablo with company and aguero receiving statues outside of the Etihad, how devastated are you not to receive? You're going to receive a figurine. Well, definitely I'm not like these guys. I'm always say that for me Silva aware and company that were like different to the rest. These three guys, they were like the core of the team. They've been there for so long. They brought too much success into the club. So I'm so pleased and so happy that the cloud give them to have this tattoo. For me, I always say the same when the game of the firewall last came at the Etihad for me that was a great moment, very emotional and I have to say that for me, that was enough. Maybe like an executive bathroom. So we could get the stature of you. Pop around to Ecuador's house, and leave it in the garden and when he turns up. I tell you what. A bobble head. "Maybe that's your point. When you intrude Atlanta and pick the bills, Matt Ryan's is still a really good quarterback. So maybe that's a team that could turn it around with their new head coach, because obviously, they've had some pretty Bad coaching for a while. Now, you know, uh, with Dan Quinn, and even at the end with Mike Smith, things had really gotten bad in Atlanta. Kyle Pit is one of the most interesting players. I think in fantasy football this year and in drafts. If you have a dynasty league you want Kyle pits. There's no doubt about it. Highly drafted. Tight end looks like a freak. But If it's a redraft league or like a guillotine Li like we're going to, You know you're in with Britain and I I don't know really what to do with pits and where he should go because the allure of a super productive tight end is could win you a league. But historically tight ends do not right away. Put up big numbers. I mean, sometimes a guy will come in and put up big numbers, but he was out of the leader. He was like, I'm thinking like Darren Waller here. I remember having a conversation with somebody about Darren Waller how he kind of burst onto the scene. He was much, but he was in the league, right? And he had some off field issues. He was not a rookie. He was not a newcomer, so to speak. It is. It is rare for young, tight ends to make a huge impact and Then again, like the game has been changing in the position has been changing. Pitt's is not like any other tight end. So should I just should I treat him like the history of tight ends, right? Should I treat him like I treat I don't know who my thinking here. Zach Ertz, either nothing alike. They put the same position Should I treat him the way that I treated? Mark Bavaro like it's just that I was trying to think of the oldest and I could. That's good going back a little bit. So he's very interesting to me. You know, I just I think it's a It's a It's a tough It's a tough decision to make where you want to take pits. I'm pulling up their death truck cause I wanted to see and I know Calvin Ridley. Who is this? Who gets the second most targets in their passing game? They have Russell gauge. Um, after that. I mean, you would think and, of course, Matt Ryan left lost to throw the football there. Other tight ends are Hayden Hurst and Lee Smith. You would think Kyle pits No worse than third in Target share. And does he beat out Russell gauge? Does he become the second favorite target for Ryan after Calvin Ridley? Well, there's another thing that's at work here, you know. This is like the bills target tree. The bills do not throw to the tight end. All that much is something they haven't done. You could say it's because they don't trust the tight end. You could say it's because they love their receivers. You know, football is a lot of chicken or the egg stuff. In Atlanta. Okay, So Matt Ryan how many great tight ends as he played with how many years did he and Tony Gonzalez overlap, if any A few, right? Yeah, they would overlapped, right? Yeah, yeah, For for a few seasons. I'm trying to pull up where When Tony Gonzalez retired because, um, Ken City to Atlanta and is that already have one more stop. No, I thought that was move on. I'll try and I think that was his last stop, so they would have overlapped a little bit quicker. That has been going for a long time. And you know, Falcons tight ends. Tony Gonzalez retired in 2013. There you go so and he never had a 1000 yard season in Atlanta. After having huge seasons in in Kansas City, so even before he's done, he plays five seasons in Atlanta. Gonzalez does Hall of Fame tight end Never 1000 yard seasons. So Do I gather from that that well, the offense didn't necessarily focus on him. He had 93 catches as a career high in 2012 with with the Falcons. Arthur Smith is their head coach. Are they running the author Arthur Smith offense, which was just in Tennessee, where My criticism of the Titans would have been. They didn't throw it enough. Yeah, they didn't throw it to John Smith nearly enough. And here's Kyle pits coming in all that. I like his quarterback. I like Calvin Ridley on the outside, like They'll probably be in high scoring games. But will Matt Ryan use a tight end as much as he could? I did A. I just did a Google search right Falcons all time tight ends. Gonzalez is number one, by the way, and of course, he wasn't originally a falcon but to your point Excuse me to your point about the best tight ends Algae. Crumpler is on this list. That's now he was there. How long has Ryan been in the league? 2000 and three. No, He's not see that old. He's pretty old. Okay, so he gets 36. So he gets Crumpler. Maybe 2000. 5 2006, But okay, so just a little bit. Crumpler was done in. Oh, seven. So on this list, Gonzalez was listed first algae. Crumpler was second. Sorry. 2000 and 8 to 2008. Alright, so he missed him. The only other guy on this list. Well, there's two guys. One Jacob Tammy. No and Austin Hooper is third on this list of all time. Greatest Falcons tight ends at some place called ranker dot com. Austin Hooper, who had 1400 yards in 46 games, played So he hasn't had he had. Tony Gonzalez is the best tight end he's had in Atlanta. The next guys are the Austin Hooper's and Jacob Tammy's of the world. So this is, you know, this is a different breed of tight end that he has had And that's why I think you know unless I I don't know what the after look up. Russell gauges target shares in recent years, But Jones goes out who steps in. Well, that might be where pits gets a whole bunch of targets out of that. I think he you know if your mat Ryan he's I would think Kyle pits is your The little bit I saw of him in Florida. The guy was a beast. He should be the second most talented weapon in your passing game with Calvin Ridley. So I would think you would. You would throw the ball a lot. So from your fantasy standpoint. Sure it makes sense with the with the dynasty, right? I would think he would get a decent amount of target this year. Want him in Dynasty single season? Yeah, you know, I should look up his over unders to it. Well, what Vegas says about Kyle pits over unders and what his expectations are. We went through Mac Jones earlier. Which is 23 touchdowns and 13 interceptions and 30 3800 yards. Yeah, Yeah. Kyle pits. I'll pull him up right here. Kyle pits over unders. The, um Yardage totals from draftkings his yardage totals. 800 I would have guessed like 77 800. Alright. Yeah, Touchdowns is seven, which is a big number. I mean seven is a lot of touchdowns for especially for figuring a red zone tar. He's a big red zone target. Yeah, And you know, once you become a target once you become a player that draws a lot of attention, which which pits might think about Stefon Diggs, who had a monster year last year, he had eight touchdowns. Only eight right and the idea that Kyle pits over under seven Okay? I I feel like the under. That's a big number. Yeah, it's a big number for looking for a tight end, but again like they might be throwing a lot. Maybe he's there. Red Zone weapon. You know, the bills have slightly deflated touchdown numbers a lot of their school positions because Alan gets so many of them in the red zone, so he's definitely interesting. Are you going to take them? In the guillotine drive. I'm not going to tell you. He's not a first round. We have a draft coming up. Yeah, it's tomorrow night. Really? It'll go fast. That's tomorrow night. I have a plan in place You can do auto pick. There's not There's actually not. The only problem is if you do auto pick in any draft right now, you might end up with J..

It's funny because i look at it such as a long game right like a bad day. I'm down one hundred and fifty. Today i got it. How do i get back to even even knowing. There's a full slate tomorrow. There's a full slate today after that but there was always this urgency to like you know for the day the short term. That was the number that was important when it's not. Yeah and and one thing. I said that people in in in the game of life. You should never play it. There's always a tomorrow. He should worry about today and they gave a force racing. There's always tomorrow around. It's like almost the opposite of just you know why. Why throw of really good part of your bankroll at something that you barely looked at. I give it full process and now have many rules. I would say. I have more of like a you know a process of how i do things and if i don't go through a full process i'm not gonna put significant money towards anything and i think that's helped. It's it's kind of built. Its way in almost as a force discipline to To hold onto your bank will not so just you know. Continue just to chase or or even just you know. Action plays where you're playing more than what you had handicapped. You know early on the day. So almost things. I think it's over time. It's just like anything else and i think at the same in my career where you learn things over time and you just you know you. The key is paying attention right. You pay attention the start to understand those situations and you and your brain smart. Your brain will trigger when you're about to do something stupid and then you step away from now living up there. How different is the town. When racing is going on versus where. There's because i know a lot of like racing people ramon dominguez there can. There's so many people that have kind of moved up to saratoga year round. Yeah it's It's it's been a busier place in general I would say the the housing market the last five years has just gone straight up A lot of brand new developments built around here so the population itself in saratoga county which can't get confusing like you go on one side of saratoga lake here in a different town right. You go the other side of the track. You're almost in a different towns. It's kind of weird but if you look at saratoga. County has certainly expanded So it's it's You know. I wouldn't say it's a crowded place. It certainly It's growing in poppulation but when the track opens It's tough you know when you call a. Place for reservation and they laugh and say you should call this last week. that that's the kind of environment. Sometimes that you run into but it's not it's not like to the point where it's it's it's crazy Annoying it's just. There's a lot of people that come into town. And and it's not the biggest town overall. So it does get a little congested. So that's why you gotta keep buddies with foreign until he can get you into those spots. -actly exactly i call. Call call the friends. And see where i can get into. You know the the the the no vase of the world you know so but Yeah it's but it's fun though that's it's it's brings in so many people that i've gotten to know over the years and nothing's better like in the next couple of weeks. You know folks that have never been the saratoga Are coming in so to me. That's always exciting to be able to show show them around and show them the experience so So yeah it does get a bit busy but it's also wanna fun to maverick bulgy joining us here on the program. I got to go up there for two days and lived up to the hype. I was i i honestly went in there. Especially you know. I'm a west coast. Honk so i'm always a fan of my sammy's my dumb ours. And i almost didn't want it to like it as much as i did but it completely lived up to the the billing matt. How are you first. Exposed to horse racing was. Did you grow up in that area. No no and it's it's really funny. So i you mentioned Before we started about Playing hockey playing hockey and betting horses were two things that not a single person in my family ever did so i feel like i go to the path that no one has traveled on How those seem to vary like everybody that is involved in most of those. It's because family was involved in a to. Those are two very odd things to gravitate to alone. Yeah it's it's funny. It's you know. I got into hockey. Because i hated talker and my dad was like well. I don't know what to do and and our neighbor was like well. You know my kids just started playing hockey seem to like it. And you're gonna guess sure. Where do i go. So that's all just kind of plain simple there and and with horse racing you know with an assist from hockey. i'll say So i went to school at union college and upstate new york and Just south west of of saratoga and you know one of the you know million jobs that i had growing up I worked for a roofing company one summer and i was living with a with a few Hockey buddies of mine and one weekend One of my one of my buddies was like..

"Your back is killing you. Your neck hurts. You probably have to go to the bathroom and the child was pressure on your bladder. And you're like i am not getting up. I'm not getting up. That's your moment like that's your child. You have all of the control over how that child is going to be as they grow up from from day. One every minute. So that's the it's the greatest thing you can do the greatest thing so don't worry about making mistakes. Just be yourself and enjoy every moment. I mean that's the best thing i can say it's so hard to do when you're actually living it. I know but it's just they just exhale and just and this is mayhem. I don't care.
