Canada Finance Minister Quits Post Amid Charity Scandal

"Look at a chapter of political tunnels. Now here in Canada where yesterday the country's finance. Minister Bill More No. Long one of the prime minister's closest political allies resigned it follows lingering ethics scandal that has surrounded Trudeau's government for some time by this stage well, today a little earlier prime to treat. That Christie Freeland Canada's deputy prime minister would replace bill more now at the finance ministry becoming the first woman to hold that post Donyell. The murmurings around bill more knows future had been simmering hearing the Canadian Press for several days. By the time, his resignation announcement came last night. What's your reaction to? What is yet another high profile resignation from Shudo's cabinets in the five years of says since he took office. Yeah, quite a quite another big controversy four Trudeau in the middle of summer I think you know off the bat whatever reason the liberals are given. Four giving for more knows exit here is a messy one that. It was said that he wouldn't be seeking election. Again, we'll be looking for other opportunities. We know that he'll be looking to helm the AC, which is a great post for him perhaps in a good career move. But at the end of the day, this comes down to. Another sticky situation for the prime minister that really threatens to derail the progress that they've made in. The coronavirus crisis namely their popularity with Canadians. But once again, another distraction for the prime, which raises questions about the ship he sailing and him as the captain let's say. This begs the question of whether Mr Trudeau is simply impossible to work with. Now this is just another controversy that comes only a week Tomasz after we spoke about the last controversy involving. The Governor General Julie Pie itch and the toxic workplace she's been accused of creating butts. The liberals the government to appoint a successor in Canada's first governor of the Bank of Canada and Christina Freelance who held the interesting post of Deputy Prime Minister and not a lot of Canadians were used to to that role before Justin Trudeau but she is his most senior cabinet minister and and now most trusted ally. But that group of People Tomasz as you know is is getting shorter as the months go on. It's seeming time and again, like Trudeau is is just a very tough guy to work with and when he doesn't get his way, well, you get run out of town we should also point out that. Bill, more know. Perhaps. Put. His foot in it and didn't help the situation on on the fact that he wasn't agreeing with the prime minister but we can set that aside they didn't handle that well but also a big controversy besides this is this we charity, of course where. He and his family and the Finance Minister and Bill Maher. Now both have personal and family ties to this charity and should have recused themselves. I don't think that. The, the picture, four Canadians by I think that picture. is becoming more and more for. Canadians. Like. An elite privilege class squabbling over not being able to work together and I think that really does not play well, obviously trudeau lost. His majority after the last election and who knows where it's it's going from here because it doesn't seem like he's going to be able to keep some of his top ministers around for very long?

Andrew McCabe, former FBI deputy director, won't face criminal charges

"President trump broke almost seventeen hours of silence following the ABC news exclusive interview with bill Maher in which the Attorney General said our is a constant background commentary that under the president tweeting that he has the legal right to step in during a criminal case almost of postal got more from maybe season as Democrat terra he remained undeterred after this is this interview that came from the bar during which bill Barr said that he feels that the president tweeting read him from doing his job properly the president though it remained undeterred and he still tweeting about DOJ business he wrote that he has not asked bar to intervene in a criminal case but that that doesn't mean he doesn't have the legal right to do that so that is the president I mean it's it's in line with his character the president who you know it'll be like through a third his his authority and so he's saying I can definitely can do whatever I want when it comes to to criminal cases here this comes just is there was the issue with the Roger stone case in which the DOJ backed off on a sentencing recommendation after the president tweeted about it and then the yeah do it justice department also informed former FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe that it will not be seeking charges against him for allegedly lying to the internal investigators all of this well there's a lot going on there is a lot going on and it's reading lots of questions about the relationship between president trump and the justice department the reason that we got to this point is because Roger stone is waiting at sentencing and and trial attorneys had recommended that he gets seven two nine eight years in prison the department of justice eventually over ruled that recommended sentencing and I came right after the president himself had tweeted that he felt that the seventy nine year sentence was a very horrible and a miscarriage of justice that there are any that kind of kicked out for a round of questions this to be okay with bill Barr over ruling this recommended sentencing for for Roger stone who's a friend of the president and one of his former associate with bill Maher over rover ruling to the sentencing for stone because of the president's tweet busy with that kind of the way they're communicating is is bar acting you know based on what the president is telling him or did bar really feel that the sentencing was unfair and then today we found out that the department of justice was dropping the case in two former FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe that it's unclear why that's being died in the the you know what I'm clear what has changed and why this is happening all of a sudden and at the same time we also learn in that bar is re opening the keys into trump's former national security adviser Michael Flynn plan had been waiting for sentencing after pleading guilty to charges that he had lied to the FBI about a conversation with the former ambassador to Russia now the DOJ's could be taking a second look at this case so many watching that and saying this thing feels kind of like that that stone case where the the DOJ is oral questioning whether the DOJ is stepping in here to help one of the president's former associates that's all and clear but it's all reading questions about the relationship between the DOJ

The Old Scourge of Anti-Semitism Rises Anew in Europe, According to the NYT

"All this. I mean, the New York Times just a beautiful example of how this sort of centrist coalition in Europe has missed everything is they've an article today called the old scorch of anti-semitism rises new in Europe. Their take is that it is all basically due to Benjamin Netanyahu and the far right in Europe. That is their take. That's just not true. But that is their take that basically, if we have huge levels of, of radical Muslim immigration from Libya, and Syria and Turkey, and those people come into Europe and a lot of them are anti semitic that we should ignore, but we need to focus in on Benjamin Netanyahu, somehow, the prime minister of Israel weird, how that is Jews getting attacking your blame the Jews when the yes, well done. New York Times, they suggest that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has not helped matters by finding common cause a nationalist leaders, like Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orban's, President Trump, so long as they do not support a Palestinian state, he's the prime minister of a state. I'm confused. Is it now his job, prime minister Netanyahu, not to defend the priorities of the state of Israel. And now the New York Times is actually suggesting that attacks on Jews are justified because you don't like Benjamin Netanyahu. It's pretty amazing. He says the New York Times as far right and far left. Politicians have often learned to project themselves, as defender of Jews throwing on blatantly anti semitic tropes, as Mr Orban has done in Hungary among the Muslims of Europe and among some leftist resentment of Israel often crosses into hostility to all Jews. Oh, really among some leftist weird. There's not a single mention of Jeremy Corbyn anywhere in this article not to mention Bill Maher not eventually of the Democratic Party, the covered furrow hunt, Amar Michael Oren is the former foreign minister for the state of Israel. He says all the hypocrisy that fits the New York Times editorial on rising. Anti-semitism sites Netanyahu has a source, but omits Omar leave and incredibly the New York Times, and it's not see cartoon and endless articles, vilifying, the one Jewish state and supporters laughable, if not so tragic. Well, that is certainly correct. That is certainly right? It's amazing. I mean it's gotten so bad. In Germany, the German one, the German ministers have warned Jews not slurring in Europe. I, I have a lot of friends who've lived in Europe. They say the same thing when I was in France, with my wife a few years back, there's certain areas of Paris, where I'd put on a baseball cap rather than wearing my yarmulke. It's the, the fact that the that the folks who are supposed intelligentsia are suggesting that only one type of anti-semitism matters the type that they hate because it comes from people that they disliked

"Welcome to an HBO podcast from the HBO late night series real time with Bill Maher start. No it. It's very exciting. When you have a constitutional crisis. We are so fucked. I'm telling you we are today. Venezuela put us on the travel advisory. That's. Only. If America was a summer blockbuster. It'd be called democracy endgame. And if you. If you missed the earlier installments in this franchise started with Russia interfere. This is the, you know, nobody disagrees with this in the Muller report. Russia interfered with our election twenty seven that was the finding of that report. And this week we found out that Robert Muller wrote more than one letter to the attorney, general, wink, wink. You bar saying why did you mis characterize what I wrote and bar responded. Well, the report was my baby my baby I thought Republicans are against killing babies. Go bar is so far up Trump's as he bumped into hand. So bar went before the Senate this week on Wednesday. And the Democrats looked all so happy after his over. They gave him a good grilling. I think they're missing the big picture. Trump is still president and the big Gotcha. Was they got bar to commit perjury, which apparently has some old timey law about lying being wrong. You know, Nancy Pelosi said that's a crime. And I'm going to report it to. Oh, yeah. See this is the problem when the guy who is supposed to be enforcing the law is the guy who is breaking the law. The Justice department had a deadline this week to provide the unredacted version of the mullahs report. The just blew it off because this is called owning the libs this all they care about the Lamer the excuse the better because the more we're owned, oh, the lame. They said they couldn't get the report over there. Because the printer jammed. And then they went to kinkos, but some kid was doing fliers for his band. I mean. So. And then, you know, the attorney general was himself subpoenaed by the house to appear yesterday blue that off and congress was like, you know, we both work for the same country. Right. So legal experts are now saying that, you know, this this is a constitutional crisis. The likes of which we have not seen in three or four days. And not showing up. When did testifying before congress become optional? It's congress not freshman psych class. And Democrats don't seem to get it. But you know, it's in the rules. "Support for NPR and the following message. Come from HBO while everyone is talking and no one is listening. Bill. Maher is ready to get real watch. The all new season of real time with Bill Maher Fridays at ten pm only on HBO it'll be cheaper than therapy. Or at farmers have been hit by the government shutdown in a different way. They are struggling to get information. The US department of agriculture usually publishes, the price sales numbers and inventory for many agricultural products. But now some of those reports are not happening. I will public radio's Amy mayor explains why this matters. Here's an example of why reports matter the government launched some of its crop and livestock reports as a response to the Soviet Union's huge purchase of US grain in the nineteen. Seventies commodities. Economist Arlen superman says the quiet purchase worth about a billion dollars at the time came as a shock then when it became known. We suddenly realized that much of our known inventory was. Sean in the markets reacted very violently commodity prices soared with that in the back of his mind Sudirman says he's now thinking about whether China could pull off a similar trick during this lag in public reporting while not likely it is possible. Superman's company relies mainly on proprietary research. But he says they use USDA figures to fact check their own. He's concerned there could be some surprises when the government reports resume particularly of wants a report start we find that. There is information that we missed that the market needs to adjust for and that's the greatest risk more immediately. Farmers. Don't have all the information. They count on in Dallas county, Iowa Marvin Shirley has been farming since the nineteen sixties and uses USDA reports to guide his decision making so Cao's sometime January, but were those give pro. Projections on ideals and the mount of cattle around without them. He may put off that sale at this time of year his family's also thinking about the amount of corn and soybean plant in the coming season. But they don't have the information. They need to make any adjustments. Shirley, says the shutdown and last year's tariffs on many US products. Create new problems for struggling farmers pros little. The pip from Nevada died still on the ballot for the state assembly. Got elected despite being dead. Or is Trump called him very close to being completely alive? Do criminals Duncan Hunter from here in California gang. Can you imagine your Representative could be serving you representing from jail from? I'd like to see that campaign ad. I'm Duncan Hunter in between making license plates and pulling my laundry shift and ho- tossing the occasional salad. I'm always working for you. Speaking of them, not caring. How it looks Jeff Sessions submitted his resignation at the request of the president yesterday with the rest of us would call getting fired. Jeff sessions. The attorney general's gone. He will be missed. He will be missed. I didn't realize this. But around the White House whenever somebody said that's a little racist. They were talking about seeing Jeff Sessions. Let's end this monologue with the happy news from Tuesday night. Because there was happy news one big story. White suburban women Trump has lost them completely. They came out big time. They came out like there was a new fifty shades of grey book. Candidate its first female democratic governor, which means the dark. "Welcome to an HBO podcast from the HBO latent series real time with Bill Maher internet's high. I tell tell me about that. My producer was just whispering in my ear that you would whispered into his ear about that nineteen thirty four picture in New York and people. Yes. Rallying for bananas eve. It's it's it's a longstanding concern of the defend the rights of people that even you hate right that freedom of speech is for everyone indivisible, and that's for everyone. And so the very very brave of you. It's the right thing to that's true current. It's the right. It's not popular. It's it's it's Princeton. What I tell. Our folks is that if we don't stand up for the right of freedom of speech now for folks that we hate right? And it's going to be black lives matter and the dreamers. Right. To- testers who care about trans shut down. But the very first big Nazi case. I was in the nineteen thirty four the picture. You just showed him the show where that was. That was courageous. I mean, the Skokie cases the best known one, right? But that was easier, right. Skokie the Nazis were a pathetic little group of individuals and never even had the Dan Pickett in in in in Chicago in Skokie actually, and but in nineteen thirty four the, Nazis, we're on the ascent, and they were one down Broadway. And it's a lot like the current context where the is a white supremacist is on the ascent that's been real. Yes. And it's not the these are not just who Saination by by folks of color, and by by religious, minority groups. Essentially, it's really important for us to Chelsea handler. What do you think of the right wing media using your actions to enrage their base, they doing that to you? I don't know. I mean, I don't read your social. I don't know people. I don't know why people who do can't have gin sitting there going on. I hate you. So no, I don't care. What anybody those people say, I don't know how to block people. And when I do I'm going to start. On the same. Out there because that way it's recorded there. There will come a time where we will tamp down on this behavior, not through freedom of speech, but through some other, you know, through some other legislation because obviously this hateful rhetoric all the time and threatening people's lives legally through legislation and has to be through restoring social norms right to be through restoring this word that he has emptied of all meaning which is civilian civility matters. He's taken away. All of the guardrails, that's why these bigots in their basement feel the confidence and this mine to come out and shoot people. But I have to say it to that point. I'd become such a kinder nicer person because of Donald Trump being elected and the, hey, I'm nice to people. I never noticed before. Because I'm like, oh my God. This is what happens if you don't pay attention to other people around out of your own lane and pay attention to the people around you. I'm nicer and kinder. I'm doing great..

"Welcome to an HBO podcast from the HBO latent series real time with Bill Maher. Thank you very much, but the storm, of course, you know, is hitting what they call the redneck. Riviera. Our thoughts are with the people there. It's devastating to be hit by the hoax of climate change. That's a terrible thing. No Trump the hurricane is very much on his mind. There was a whole roll of paper towels on stuck. Oh, he had bigger things on his mind today. Kanye west wiz in the Oval Office. I'm sure you saw. Easy and cheesy boy. It was like a meeting of the lost minds. I'd tell you, but they both had to do a lot to make the meeting happen. Trump clear your schedule and skipped his meds. So. Got it. Makes sense. Trump like celebrities and Connie likes, big asses. But let's not make the meeting was a big success. In fact, at the end of it, Conde signed a pledge to stop, develop nuclear weapons program. Ridiculous. Gonna crazy. Unhinged Trump is out there this week on the campaign trail calling Democrats angry an angry mob. We're the angry mob and the party of crime. He's president. I know you are. What am I. He says, Democrats now are too dangerous to govern. We're the angry mob, but they're chanting to lock up at eighty five year old woman who didn't do anything. I wonder where anybody got the idea of calling them deplorable. No. I mean, I, it was Hillary Clinton locker up that Dianne Feinstein locker. Rub when their solution do every woman you don't like is detainment. You're not the party of Lincoln. You're the party of R Kelly. Now also, we saw this week. Bread cabinet was sworn in to the supreme court. Embarassing moment. He raised his right hand and out of habit. A touch this finger to his nose. And Milania is back from a trip to Africa, and she gave shouldn't give interviews very often because she's big vampire, you know. But she gave a very rare interview. She said some very interesting things. You said there are certain people in the administration that you cannot trust, but you would not say who. Hint, he's fucking stormy Daniels. "But the other lesson I hope our daughter learns is this there are fights that at times, wiser men and women walk away from, and this is a fight as you gotta start over. Somebody else can find you the dignity, the Republican pokes. There is fighters, there's two parties, the Democrats, the traders and it's not not a big issue. I often read that Paul Ryan quote where he's the got him on tape behind closed doors saying to get somebody else's. You know, there's two Republicans who I think are on Putin's pay on the Carthy Tim McCarthy's to Republicans on Putin's payroll Trump and Rohrabacher, and Paul Ryan doesn't go, oh my God. Let's go to the FBI. He goes, okay, doesn't they say it's how we know we're. I mean, that's not true. I can. Sola data had a question for you? Well, I'm for why? Why don't they use their hour like like Jeff flake is actually one was powerful people on earth. He's a politician, right, right. Retiring one. Needs a job. Right? And now he's going to have a nice cushy Republican jobs. Nice job like this look, isn't this more fun being with us. When people are funnier. We know when people get mad at me for doing TV I say, hey, call your congressman. But here's what I will tell you and this is something look. And as we have these academic and intelligent conversations about why? Why? Why? Why? Why? At some point we get to judge the leadership integrity and the moral fiber of our political leaders. And we get to say, you made a wrong decision and you leave, and that's where we are right now in the moment of, okay, I know question Soledad O'Brien, if or when Rovida is overturned, how should progressives respond? Ooh. With protection. You know, I wearing a lot of protection honor with saddest things is to here Senator Collins talk about that as a non issue when you listen to her very long and tortured delivery of her speech today to talk about, you know, I'm not worried about Roe v Wade, and I think there are lots of people who are worried about Roe v, Wade. I think she's very wrong on that issue. I don't know. I don't know what the, I don't know what the solution to that is, but you know, hopefully to motivate people to get to the polls, can I can. I suggest something very the that liberals would actually be better off if reverse his way disappeared, because then they would actually have to go to the people and ask for democratic majorities. And in fact, there all democratic or most western now that you're not going to get anybody fresh. Sure. How did she. There. Believe me. We all know that. All right. Thank you, everybody. "Now in from local state. Every time you do that, you trigger the other tribes even greater and greater levels of passion. That's the problem. Then we have to have the passion that's equal to that. I feel like. My you mentioned Bucky fuller. Another thing that he said that really makes a lot of sense as far as what we're talking about. He says, when you want to change something, you don't have to go right up against it. He says, come up with something that makes what you're trying to change obsolete. You know, don't spend all this energy in this anger that anger could you can we can. We can shift that and get involved with how we see it. You have to talk to each other. I mean think that's right. That's it. The lack of communication. I mean, when I was saying earlier in and thought that you thought it was absurd. I think when I look at the meter in a certain way because I'm still basically right of center, I see and hear things that you may not see in here. And when I say that I'm hearing those things it's useful for you to say, I hear you opposed to it's absurd optional. What is marriage counseling. Here you right here, you not fun trees. You know what. I read an interesting thing. I think it was from our sometimes bread Glenn Greenwald. He's saying that like on MSNBC they get ratings every segment. Okay, you go by the minute? No, yes. They're called the minutes. You get broken down, but women, it's, you can follow where you lose your voter. Right. Okay. So who on MSNBC is ever going to risk their show licensing, something that doesn't exactly aligned with what the audience already wants to hear and think. So that's kind of a hermetically sealed bubble to is just one with a lot more facts where they're usually on the right side of issues, but not the whole time. No. And sometimes you end into this framework, for example, Senator say about race, gender, the right, really upsetting a lot of other people in the country you're hearing this who don't. You wouldn't say that to the face? I can. I can be agreeing with them and go, oh, for fuck sake and turn. It really I can't get because everything is like, what do you think, Chris? You're so right. It's like, what a surprise. Communicating online and on screens. And that's a very different experience. When you're talking to someone and looking at their eyes and basement body language where you actually do, you have to accommodate them a little bit David jolly. Are you going to follow other principled conservatives and vote democratic in the midterm hot seat for you? David jelly. And now so look, I love that question because I came out in October of last year and said, I think Democrats should take the house. We'll be safer in the divided government. The billet, it builds on everything. We've talked about Brock Obama talked about post-partisan America, but he tried to do it through two party system. I left the party about five weeks ago. My wife or not. I don't think the future is between the two parties and I'll tell you the inflection point. We're expecting our first child and among adults. We can have this Republican on. Eighty. Oh, always gets up law. I made a baby. Oh, look. It focuses your perspective. And what I would say is assured among dolts. We can have this Republican on Republican fight. Nearly three years ago I stood on the house floor is a sitting Republican member of congress and called on Donald Trump to drop out of the presidential race, and I have never lost my voice. I have never gone silent as all of my Republican colleagues have tough because I mean, you know, people are currently your whole life. Your parents are probably Republicans. Yeah, it look, it's incredibly tough, but here's, here's what I will tell you. I, I hope our daughter learns two things from our example. The first is for three years. We fought a fight for something. We truly believed in that the Republicans could answer to better angels..

"We want those things go out and vote. You're so right. Power begets power. There's spent. President Trump is not expanded his base, it's still in the thirty percent so we don't have to be so upset about this. If we can do something about look, more people are running for office, and now the young people are excited more women than ever before take heart in that and get them to the polls yet them for the fall. Them to the balls. Jeff, should the government be doing more to ensure that kids facing hunger are able to get access to food? Oh, yeah, absolutely. I mean, this is you know where government can really lend a hand now I had I've been working with on the hunger issue for over thirty years on you. Yeah, I've had a wonderful success by not going up against the fed John Donna lobbying there, but working with the governor's. They seem to be, you know, a lot more into the people. A lot of these governors don't know that there's a billion dollars of federal funding that's their on their table if they have programs in place to, you know, well re kids, but if they don't have those programs in place in that, well, it's the same thing with Medicaid expansion. They've got lots of money on the table from the federal government and ObamaCare. The Republican governors chose not to use that money. Why? Again, liberal tier. Because it was dot costing them anything, what what's what feels odd to me too. 'cause like myself a democrat, but it's kind of isn't that a conservative feeling to go more local route than looking at? And that's what I bring up about sure environment rather than waiting for those guys. I mean, you definitely got to do your voting for sure, but engage in another kind of way. We have another whole powerful web engaging in all of these issues to ticket kind of personally don't say, I'm going to boat for the guy, and then you made your vote now. I can. I don't have to feel guilty. I've made my you can engage in more, right? I mean, all the changes in our society have come when it percolates from the anti slavery movement, the women's movement, the civil rights movement, the progressive movement. It's the citizens make. And then the leaders channel with he would talking before about government versus leaders. We can't be waiting for the leaders. We have to take the responsibility ourselves. We are the citizens of this country. Google surfing goodwill serving in the morning. I saw this woman who said something really interesting because it seems to me that passions. What we're looking. We're looking for people to be passionate about the environment, and she made some really interesting observations. She said, passion is the flame that comes from rubbing some sticks together. You gotta get in there and get into it and chewing up. They have. We have plenty of passion right now, but it's the wrong kind of passion, right? It's a passionate and intense hatred of the other. Yeah. I mean, I wish I could be as hopeful as you Doris. But when you when you look at the rhetoric right now, it seems very similar to me to the rhetoric of the eighteen fifty s and eighteen early eighteen sixties in which people are talking about the other part of the country as if it were another country. When people are saying we would prefer to be run by a foreign agent Enrico that we would buy a democrat weird a point where the discourse has curdled to such an extent that it can lead especially now again, if Judah Masih of this system continues like you were talking about the popular vote issue in the electoral college issue presidents elected gerrymandering. If this continues, we could have a real legitimacy crisis in this country where people will actually turn to violence and you can see it beginning, you can see people wanting to vent this anger in the sense of in the streets or by going up against people in elevators or restaurant. You can see at the beginning actually. It's low Tartu require need to have a constitutional amendment and citizens United. We have to overturn that we need to have on.
