Broncos and Commandos, back and forth. Great game. Just like that Giants-Arizona game. What a comeback by the Giants. We didn't pick that game, but that was a fantastic comeback by the New York football Giants. At 17, what was the score in the Giants game going into the fourth? 27-0? 20-7, I think? Because it was 17-0. It was 17-0. I texted Paul Nolan, the Giants are going to go 0-17 this year. And he texts back, or worse. Or worse. Well, they flew back. Unbelievable. And I turned the game off. And then I said to my wife later that night, the Giants have gone scoreless in two games. Thinking they hadn't scored in the fourth quarter. And she goes, oh no, Damon, what are you talking about? She's like, the Giants won. I was like, what? That's an amazing win. But the Broncos, they dropped one. They had a Hail Mary pass right at the end, which they scored. But they failed to hit the two-point conversion there. So, 35-33. Commandos picked that one. And they're up 2-0 now, Washington. They're looking good, too. That NFC East is a tough division. And speaking of the NFC, the Cowboys, of course, went in, took care of business against the Jets team. I'll tell you, the Jets, though, they got a good defense. They really do. They really held the Cowboys in check. I thought the Cowboys could have put up 50. They ended up holding them to five field goals. But still, the Cowboys ended up winning 30-10. Their defense was a little bit too strong. The Dallas defense, that would be for the Jets. It's going to be your year, Slick. Long way to go, Big D. You know that. It's only two games. A lot of things could happen. Look at Saquon Barkley. Tweaked his ankle. You know, I don't want to get too crazy. But anyway, Big D, that was a glorious wrap in sports. 6-3 this weekend. 6-3 last weekend. So, I got to get a little better with those college picks. Those are tough. "Well, let's go on to the upset of the day here who just ruined everyone's knockout pools around the country. Bill's Jaguars. So yeah, it the Jaguars defense the Jaguars much maligned defense going up against the bills and the NFL's highest scoring defense come to this week ends up holding Josh Allen in this buffalo offense to 6 points and get a 9 to 6 win in what was boy. It was not beautiful football, but that's the way they did it. And I do want to one give Jaguars defense a coordinator Joe Cullen, a, I don't know, a metaphorical virtual pat on the back. This is, it was an interesting matchup because this is a Jaguar's defense that has really struggled against offenses that are maybe a little more highly schemed a little more on schedule and usually that's what happens to bad defenses. You just hit an offensive game plan comes in and you can't stop it. Whether it be, you know, we saw the Texans do it to them. We saw the dolphins have a lot of success moving the ball against them and kind of no one else this season. And in this game, Josh Allen is a guy who does not necessarily want to play on schedule all the time. He wants to get late in the down. He wants to improvise. He wants to stress a defense as much as possible. You have to be incredibly disciplined against that to not give up these big plays. And the Jaguars were, they were absolutely up to the task in this one. Yeah, I mean, it was just a stunning result. You wonder how much of a boost the Jaguars Josh Allen got out of playing the bills Josh Allen? I mean, it was like a running joke all week, would he sack him and NFL network looked up the player had ever sacked another player with the exact same name, which apparently had not happened and there are all these funny things about it, but then he just plays totally out of his mind. I mean, he has a trifecta of big plays and was a huge factor in this stunning result. He had a sack. He had an interception, which Josh Allen had an interception. He had his first career interception as a defensive end. And then he had a fumble recovery as a Jaguar sealed the game in the fourth quarter there. And that's the other thing I will break up and we will go back to the law of averages because that's what it all comes down to in this league. The Jaguars had two takeaways on the season league low coming into this game. And again, even if you are a struggling, it usually you just get like, you know, whatever. You get a tip pass. You get a botched quarterback center exchange that you fall on. You get some special teams for just that stuff tends to just happen every once in a while. It hadn't been happening for the Jaguars. And all of a sudden they get three turnovers in this game. They get three takeaways. They get more than they had the entire season behind thus far. And that's what ends up being the difference in what, again, I mean, my goodness. If you didn't watch the game, I would never encourage you to go back and watch this. It was not beautiful football. Josh Allen and Trevor Lawrence are both tremendously talented and it was kind of difficult to watch them struggle the way they did in this one, not to mention, I'm not going to get too far into the officiating, but the officiating was bizarre. Almost like performance art bad in this one..

"I had the jets winning twenty four twenty one so was all the way wrong on that one right next game was a solid one though very good competition between two great organizations pittsburgh steelers versus the buffalo bills for this game. I had buffalo winning twenty six twenty I wasn't terrible on the score. But i was wrong on. Who's gonna win Yeah pittsburgh steelers took this one twenty three to sixteen actually And i mean stand out performance from linebacker. Tj why with two sacks five qb hits and a tackle for a loss all over the place. There's still somebody out there that had a better performance in him but very solid situation for him absolutely and the steelers. Let's talk about the steelers. Defense was always going to be the strength and that was especially evident. Has it kept the game. Close in the first half in spurred the second half comeback Yeah they needed to warm up. First half was a little shaky for pittsburgh. Second half is definitely when it got it done. It made his win. Happened of pittsburgh's twenty unanswered points. Seventeen were the result of two bills. Turnovers on downs and a block plant slash return touchdown which was put into motion when cameron heyward had a third down sack on josh allen. One play early. Tj white just off. The mass of payday had sex and was disruptive forced out the afternoon. The bills managed to convert seven of sixteen third downs. But they were oh into on fourth downs. The offense has work to do all right. They have to work out some of these pains that they had early on but the defense showed sunday. It's more than capable of basically buying off some time. Picked up behind the line with seventy six total yards and four yards per carry. So i mean there could have apart on. My things will slow. I think they were having a lot of confidence in what they're bringing to the table in the rain game immediately and it just didn't it didn't clock out that way. It's just not high went down as for the bill. Despite a dominating defense defensive effort in the first two quarters the bills allow twenty straight points to the steelers coming out of the half and lost a commanding lead The defense allow pittsburgh to put together three drives of nine plus plays in the second half along and failed the Generate assistant pressure against a young offensive. Line the bills also had a black which will turn into a td. And that's cut those kinds of turnovers you don't want whatsoever It only hurts. You doesn't even give you a chance. I mean it. It's a tough thing to overcome especially in tie game But i mean candidate can can build replicate. What they year was is just the funky start or is this what they are now. Will if are being transparent. I think it will just a rough start straight up And still is a coach. Will you gotta give them their props. So it's a tough team to beat if you're not completely prepared warm everything like that Accuracy downfield proved to be a problem for josh allen. "And by the time when I'm getting out, I'm thinking Well, I should have got insurance on this rent a car because it's probably going to be upside down by the time back out here. I mean, and you know how the radar fans dress? Yeah. You know, and and and they are just nuts and their fires all over there swinging swords, and it's just like and I It was the old. Not second knows there's two times I've feared for my safety. Um, but, yeah, I was just like I was nervous. I was scared in that place. The other time was when I was a very, very, very young broadcaster. I was working part time at the all news station here where I had interned also in Buffalo called W E. B R at the time, and I was also working at the airlines part time so I could fly for free. So what I would do is go to the Monday night games for the radio station because I can fly for free, right? And you know, it was cool. And I would get a discount hotel because I worked for the airlines and they go. Yeah, we can do that for you. Well, I went to New York for a jet scheme. And it was it was in the Kelly era in that group, and the bills got they were absolutely annihilating the Jets by halftime, and they started burning the place down. Basically, they started bonfires with hats. I saw some guy you know, a mini TV I saw some guy gets smashed over the head by a mini TV. There were fires everywhere. "Baseball at that time. I think one. The things i did did struggle with and realize those finding Good inaccurate documentation of negro league games and barnstorming gains at the time I found you know there was definitely a lot of advertising. You know come. Satchel page to kenosha wisconsin or whatever. Those are great But then you telling what happened in the game and opinions. They just weren't something that were covered in white newspapers. Mainstream newspapers in the early part of the nineteen hundreds. So i found myself using the pittsburgh courier and as a main resource which is an african american publication in pittsburgh You know historical you weekly newspaper And that was where i was able to find a lot of the accurate reporting Meagrely and black baseball and social issues. you know and everything like that so it was. It was very interesting to say. See the ballot and coverage. You know things that weren't covered by mainstream media that were covered these these african american publications and the reverse as well. Well was the importance of baseball to the african community. african american community. How was it looked upon. It was a huge part. You know as huge as as wait. america you know it just wasn't always publicized and and celebrate it that way nationwide within the african american community. Those games were huge. And i think one of the things that sometimes gets lost with You know white owners pushing back against integration. You know there were definitely had their racist reasons for doing so But also a business reasons you know when when they go out of major league teams on the road they were renting out their stadiums to the negro league teams and drawing out dry some of the major league teams in some instances so there was a tremendous amount of interest in the negro leagues. Without question. i mean it was enough to fill stadiums East west all star games. That they had were were drugs And you know they were covered by mainstream media as well so There's never a shortage of interest Had the barnstorming or to these african american teams can travel all over the country to any little town in america. People were coming out to see them black and white. You write about how. African americans have influenced baseball from the eighteen hundreds to the present. Give me a thumbnail description of how they've done that you know. I had a great conversation about that with pot cancer. Extra president of the eagerly dan. I flew out there and interviewed him and he said you know he put it great. He said you can go back in baseball history to any point in time and they're always african american stars. They're always black. Players for people can look up to you know whether they were black or white you know they just didn't have that opportunity to play in major league baseball. You know there were. The legend satchel teenage reached out. You know beyond just major league baseball. A bill josh gets and cool papa bell so they were always people to look up to just the point where they finally got into major league baseball and now they have a wider reach You know people were able to see them. Look up to them. And and i really do believe that that was a very Very big aspect of Of major league baseball players African american players as kids. Young black kids in the fifties and hank aaron and they wanted to be like You know and then it led to a boom in the seventies and eighties You know things like that. Kinda easier to perpetuate through the generations. You mentioned about cool papa bell and josh gibson and other names like that i don't know how much of it was Was fact it. How much is just a reputation that got out of out of bounds in sense. Tell me a little bit about the some of the great players and what they did actually accomplish. That's a good point too. And there's definitely a folklore. Do give negro league than barnstorming and the those players you mentioned. Cool papa and and satchel cage and just kids center mule suttles hidden you know. Five hundred. Eighty put homers but You know the documentations on the more structured leaks the negro national league there are stats We get major league. Baseball is gone to recognize These rarely stats as a major league. Which is great You know it's never going to be a complete picture Their records are incomplete There there are boxers that exists or are storybooks against But but you never really know you know. It was the league's were loosely. Organized time Barnstorming didn't necessarily count. So you know it is. It is kind of a. I'd say you know complete picture and that element of folklore that we just probably will never get a full full you know. How fast did satchel page pitch out. How far the judge gets fifties home runs over. Lying is these newspaper articles and stories that have been passed down. Tell me a little bit about. What was the toughest part in writing this book. That's a great question. And i i the toughest part for me was keeping in mind that You know it's too for two hundred and thirty facebook it's the size of the normal bobble But i would like yeah. There were definitely subjects. That i would loved to do a deeper dive into But couldn't do that. Because i'm trying to incorporate over one hundred and fifty years of baseball so you know tennis. The role of kennesaw mountain atlantis. In all of this. I think really deserves a very deep dive You know a and kind of on a bigger scale you know. I wanted to really kind of dive into where the tower was with integration and segregation Landis is the figurehead. He was the commissioner of baseball during the white periods. But there are a lot of questions about that. You know i think to me. The real power lied with the owners. landis you know while he you know he absolutely stood in the way of integration. You know there are some you know. He has positive relationships in other areas with african americans. he was business. Partners are here. They are very good close. If rube foster who founded the negro leagues each stood up as a judge for many You know on the right side of many rachel incidents so but then yet again you know seen as has the figure that kept baseball white for all those years you know and then there's the question You know landis died in nineteen forty four. You know there were team. That didn't integrate ten til ten fifteen years down the line after that. So what does he really the guy standing in the way. You know that. That's something. I would have loved to dive deeper into But just the restrictions on on doing a comprehensive time line. I think that was my biggest challenge. It's what to include whatnot to include. "I think you know what Walt? It's funny. Actually, I will tell you that I thought the Bills were being prime time in week one. I really did I whether it was the Thursday night Tampa Thing or Sunday night against Kansas City earlier in the show. We were even talking about a month. I thought maybe a Monday night or against New England. Miami. I really did think. The day or at a point now where you would want them in prime time and weak one. But having said that, I get it and I understand how the league Thanks again. It's not just weak one. It's a 17 game schedule. There is a definitive number of games that you can have in at night. And then if you throw in what I think, will be 4 25 when there are only so many games that can't be at one o'clock on a Sunday afternoon. I don't think pit. I think Pittsburgh is down this year. I don't know the league factor that in I think you have to look at 17 games and they're going to be on Ah, lot in the national window this year. I totally understand it. Fair enough. Yesterday is a Monday night game here in December. You know, maybe one of the Dolphins games is a night game. I mean, there are plenty of opportunities on the schedule, so when the schedule comes out, keep in mind. You know that the league takes into a number of a number of things into account. You can only be on if it's the If it's not the new rules for the new TV contract, you have a maximum five night games. You're not on Scheduled right. You could be flexed. I think into additional night games, but in terms of when the schedule is set no more than five night games I still think the bills are gonna be in five and the league is looking at it. Who is it going to be? Where do we want to put him at night? What part of the season's gonna be in? Is it? A Thursday night? A Sunday night and Monday night. Some combination. Just think there could be an overreaction to my God. They're disrespecting the bills. They're not. It's an overall 17 game schedule, and you only have so many nighttime windows available toe put a single team in That's right. And again. I don't even know if they're going to the seven max. Yet there are going to seven max or prime time games. We talked about this per team, but that might not be until the new TV deal kicks in, but it could be this year. Some ambiguity on that, But, um, do you like that? See, I used the word you gave ambiguity. That's right way. Try and get through it. You know, it is unclear, but, um The bills are gonna get plenty of national exposure this year. No fans are jacked up for week one. They want to show look at our team. We're good. We went to the NFC title game last year, and I don't disagree with Walt for a second, by the way, Good call because what he's saying is which I agree with. That's a good matchup. The country would be interested in that. I do not disagree. This isn't the bills playing the Jags of the Jets. This is wow. Ben, the Steelers. What are they? The bills Josh Alan went to the F C championship game. So if they would've put that game at 4 25 national window. Oh, yeah, I totally get it. If they put that game, primetime, totally get it. I don't know I can't speak for the league, but If you if you remove yourself emotionally, and I know it's hard to do from the bills equation in this I do think in terms off Whether it's market size Boston whether it's you know, knowing we talked about this with New England last year South as bad as they were, you would tune in because we're all fed up of knowing on waiting for 21 years. You tune in just to watch him lose and see if Bela Chick would freak out on the sideline s O. I think there are a number of factors in play, and I do think that's a good matchup. It's a It's a key divisional game. Both those teams. I think the league is looking at thinking. They're both playoff contenders. Um, maybe Division contenders, depending on how the respect of quarterbacks look And I think there's there's a lot in terms of what's attractive about that matchup for different reasons that I'm not stunned. That's in a 4 25 window. Like I said, I When the bills you're done, I'm all I'm all excited to see how Miami and New England looking week one and we could watch that game now. Yep. And I'm still holding to my four prime time games. I got the bills at the Chiefs at the Saints, New England home and Miami home. Those are my guess is and I still believe there is a Better than there's a decent possibility. I think the bill's gonna be put on that Thanksgiving night in New Orleans. And it's a long day. Sal. Who's one of the best I've ever seen? At an all time Great year. And I wish Buffalo was going into this game. With their offense clicking. They handed the ball off to running back one time in the first half against Baltimore. They're throwing it 75% of the time. I don't think that's a winning formula. Even in 2020 2021. Now I still don't think that that's You want to be passed first run second. You want to be 60% run 60% past 40% run! You want to pass the ball with Josh Allen? With digs and Easily and Gabriel Davis is questionable, but he should play with those guys in your passing game. John Brown Shore. The Bills, Mafia a $300,000 into Lamar Jackson's, uh, benefit our charity and In the you know in his home city. Look at what they did for Andy Dalton when when he threw that pass a couple years ago. "Start to the weekend because it is the conference championships. In the NFL. Um, you know, and I said last week. I think that that The consensus might be that the divisional round is the best weekend in the NFL. I amend that for this year because I think these you couldn't get better matchups. In the NFL has for the conference championships. I mean, Aaron Rodgers against Tom Brady. Natural homes. Um Gets the Buffalo Bills Josh Alan and the energy that the bills have right now. I mean, I had I don't think it gets any better than what you've got, and it doesn't get better than the quarterbacks that they've got, either. There's no there's no weak spot in that lineup. The one through four hitters are all strong. The question is which quarterback has the most to gain by winning the Super Bowl this year at 855 to 1 to 4 to 27. My ultimate answer, I think is Aaron Rodgers. Because of what I think the wind does to elevate him. Permanently. Irrevocably. Never to be, you know, knocked down a peg again. Think that's AH. That's what's at stake for for Rogers. I mean, like a lost doesn't cripple him. He's still in all time. Great quarterback but a win. I think, you know. Puts him in a room. But I don't think America will be riveted by the story about Josh winning the Super Bowl of what it is it I mean, I think he'd be more riveted with not riveted, but It'll be amazing that Buffalo with us well, but because I don't think they're gonna get past Kansas City. But if they do, and they're just gonna have the all time record for Super Bowl losses with five because I mean, I don't see him winning the Super Bowl. And I'm not just a discredit, waving saying Oh, you know, like I see idea. I could see any of these teams. I think all these teams are good enough to win the Super Bowl. I like the favorites to win. Tomorrow. Um, I think you know, Look, the Packers and the Chiefs have been the best teams all season. Uh, you know, there's a reason they had to play one fewer game. They had the by and there was only one you know, obviously, But Holmes is played the quarterback position at the highest level possible. Rogers is playing it at a higher level than even he ever has. Um, so you know, I have to the Like both of those teams. But I don't think there's any of the four involved. That isn't a Super Bowl caliber team at this point. Um, you know, I was a little doubtful of Tampa going into the playoffs. Um, mainly because of that stretch in the middle of the season that they had, but they've kind of a race that at this point, I mean what New Orleans? That was a tough because the well is really probably should have won that game. To be honest. In the states probably should have won that game. That punt return that was called back like that's a big blow. It's a big swing in that game, and then the fumble that cook had Think New Orleans was marching to take control of that game. When that fumble went down those two plays and then the you know that the reality that Drew Brees is cooked. You know, so he couldn't put points on the board. So when they lost those two swing play those two swing plays. That's what I think won the game for Tampa. No. You take seven off the board on the punt return, and you took at least three off the board with the fumble. And that led to a touchdown for for the Buccaneers. So I I do think the state should have won that game. Um, However, Tampa beat Green Bay thoroughly earlier this year, and I don't think it's out of the room possibilities that they can win to board games in a row. Give it the talent that they have on that team, particularly offensively Aggressive defense. On Ben the bills.
