Inflation continues dominating headlines, new data shows the economy's not only hindering younger Americans ability to save for emergencies, but it's also setting back young people's finances to a greater degree than their older counterparts, bank rate dot com analyst Sarah foster has taken a closer look with northwest news radio's Tom hudler. So what are the headlines in this report here? So what we found is actually kind of a contradiction to what we've long assumed about inflation. We're actually seeing that younger Americans as finances are at least getting burned more than their older counterparts. So we zoom in here at the data more than 7 and ten DM millennials. They say they're saving less due to those price pressures. And that compares those 66% of gen X and 63% of baby boomers. So not to say that we don't necessarily see this pain across the board, but it's just that younger generations are finding it a little bit harder to stay above water. Yeah, you point out it seems like the millennials and the Gen Z is just can't catch a break. You always offer some great tips and advice. What are some of the tips you would give in this instance? Well, I think it's really important to think about where you're putting your money. You want to at least make sure that it's not losing purchasing power to inflation. The best place obviously is to look at those online challenger banks where yields are almost 17 times the national average and their FDIC insured if you're so worried about money safety. And that can really help you a lot over time. I mean, especially if you put just a $1000 in your bank account, continue to put $20 in it each month. You could earn almost $40 in interest compared to just $3 at a traditional brick and mortar bank. You also say to find ways to boost your income, whatever it takes, really. I think younger generations are in this strong position where they are at least familiar with technology. They're also growing up with a lot of these other opportunities that may be older generations didn't have. They can maybe find ways to monetize their hobbies, maybe make some extra money on the side using the gig economy, whether it's through a store page on Etsy or even delivering groceries on the side through Instacart. A lot of the times when we do boost our income, we can then use that extra money to recycle back into our savings account that we can either put towards our goals or just put towards helping our anxiety when time feel tough. Got advice. Thanks as always for being with us, Sarah foster from bank rate dot com. And that's northwest news radio's Tom hudler. DeSantis to expand 'Don't Say Gay' law to all grades

"Florida governor Ron DeSantis is moving to forbid classroom instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in all grades. About a year ago, desantis signed a bill critics called don't say gay. In Florida, we will make sure that parents can send their kids to school to get an education, not an indoctrination. The rule change would ban lessons on sexual orientation and gender identity from grades four to 12. It's now kindergarten to third grade with some exceptions. The proposal would not require legislative approval and is scheduled for a vote next month before the state board of education. The law in Florida drew widespread backlash nationally with critics saying it marginalizes LGBTQ people and kicked off a feud between the governor and Disney, which publicly opposed the law. Reparations May Be Given to Blacks in California

"During his now infamous trial, January 6th defendant, Jacob chansley, AKA the Q shaman, faced some very hefty sentences. These included a 5 year prison sentence and a fine of up to $250,000. In law, such fines are levied as a form of restitution in order to compensate for costs such as damaged property, medical bills, resulting from personal injury, or even to pay an opponent's legal fees. The concept of reparations is that it is a form of punishment that can also help to repair the damage that was done by the accused. It's important to note, the government can not find you with reparations out of the blue. You have to be guilty of a crime. It's good the Chancellor wasn't ultimately hit with the full amount as a quarter of a million dollars for most people can't be raised easily. People work their entire lives and still can't save that much money. It's such a large amount that even someone as gullible as judge Lambert, a man who genuinely believed the Q shaman was somehow the breath from destroying America's democracy forever. Thought the penalty was overkill. Lately, there's been another shaman in the news, only this shaman has two ends, shaman Walton is a member of the San Francisco board of supervisors. A body which voted unanimously last Wednesday to approve a plan to give $5 million to every eligible black resident as part of the city's plan to make reparations for slavery. The plan was a way to go before final approval, like every other member of the board, shaman Walton wants to see it through. He says, quote, we have to stay focused and stay together as a community, he says. Because now it is a 100% more prevalent that we can not be separated or divided. Let's stay the course. Because a $5 million payday for me is almost here. It might be pertinent to point out that shaman Walton himself is black. And something also tells me he will be included among those deemed eligible for the payout.

Kansas could soon approve 'born alive' abortion bill

"The Kansas House is expected to take a final vote today that would require healthcare providers to take lifesaving measures if an abortion inadvertently results in a live birth. The Kansas proposal is based on the disputed idea that healthcare providers leave newborns to die after unsuccessful abortions. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in June that states can ban abortion, and the Republican controlled Kansas legislature has long had anti abortion majorities in both chambers, but a 2019 Candice Supreme Court decision protected abortion rights, and in August 2022, voters rejected a proposed change to the state constitution to overturn that ruling, and give lawmakers the power to greatly restrict or ban abortions. "When you were in college, you were still really into sports, you weren't athlete, you mentioned even after college, how you played for the Buffalo Bills. How did you get connected with Brooke Shields in college? How did you ask her out? I heard you guys dated. So did you kind of see her and think, you know what? I think I'm gonna go chat with her or did you kind of already know you're both a Hollywood or LA connection? No, I don't think that was part of it. For me, just having that knowing that world, it wasn't something that was unfamiliar to me. But she was a year ahead of me. And we ended up having a class together. My sophomore year, religion, two 11. Malcolm diamond, the professor, and I remember I just was waiting for class. It's like, you know, wait for a class to get out. and we were in this big hallway. Staircase kind of going up. And I looked up and she looked at me at the same time, I looked at her and kind of just saw each other, it's mild. That was it. And then we just started chatting here and there. And I really, there's a lot of baggage that would go with dating someone that famous. Even at Princeton, even though Princeton, a lot of the kids were like, oh, we're so cool. We're going to pretend like we don't care that she is who she is. Oh, who cares? And then there was a lot of that stuff kind of going on, but I didn't think twice. I was an athlete and just doing my thing. And then we sort of met. And after we dated a little of my sophomore year, I literally said there's no way. I'm going to ever date this woman. It's just too much stuff. What a pain in the tail. No possible way. And then, of course, my junior year in senior year was still dating there. But that happens. Things change. Things change, yeah. Yeah. Well, I saw that reason. Dean Cain on His Journey From Trailer Park to Princeton to Hollywood

"So dean, your life has been so fascinating. So I wanted to ask you a little bit about just kind of your journey before we talk about more of the news stuff. I saw that you spent some of your childhood in Michigan and then in California. And in high school, when you were in Santa Monica, you were excelling in sports, and you even played some baseball with Charlie Sheen and Rob Lowe. Is that correct? And what was that like? It's mostly correct. I grew up, so I grew up in I was born in Michigan, but I moved to California when I was three. My mom up and took off with her two kids. Her first husband was my biological father. It was not an ideal husband, was philandering and so she left and came out to LA to be an actress with two kids to the Asian kids. And we looked more on my given name as Tanaka. So she came out here with us too, and met and fell in love with my dad. Who she married a year later. And then through a really terrible story actually, a woman was raped and I believe killed in an apartment next to us or right near us. And then the next day myself and a couple other guys, my brother and another couple kids were out playing cops and robbers as they used to back in the day. And I was the youngest and so I wasn't able to have I didn't get to a gun. So I went looking for something and I found the real gun and it was apparently the weapon that was used and that day my dad borrowed, I don't ten, $12,000 from his parents in South Dakota and moved us to a trailer park in Malibu. And I grew up in a trailer park in Malibu, which sounds, you know, like trailer park. Yeah, but it was in Malibu. So we'd spend our days outside all day long on the beach, running around, and I grew up with kids like Sean Penn, Chris Penn Rob Lowe, Charlie Sheen, Emilio Estevez, all those kids were just, we were all just part of this one little Malibu group. I guess all our parents were involved in the business, not all of them, but in some way or another. And so through this weird happenstance, those kids all ended up being actors. Now I played baseball Charlie for a long time. Rob, rob was never the great athlete. Rob even back in the elementary school was just all the girls loved him and he's so pretty. And he loved the girls back. So that was the that was the skinny and rob, so to speak. Charlie very good baseball player. Played on teams with him forever. And then went to high school, Santa Monica high school. And I was a good athlete student. It worked out real well for me. A lot of the kids are madly when they got to Santa Monica worked able to compete at that level, unfortunately. So a lot of the kids stopped playing sports, Charlie continued to play for a while. I don't even know what he did to seeing it if he played a scene here or not. And then I was lucky enough to with my grades and thank you to get the president of the university, had a wonderful career at Princeton. Grew up a lot turned into him and went from a boy to a man there and played very well. I played football. I mean, football ran track and I played volleyball. And then I got a chance to play for the Buffalo Bills afterward, which was great. And got hurt right away. And then it's been acting and directing and filmmaking ever since.

Army of lobbyists helped water down banking regulations

"Recent bank collapses that prompted a federal rescue are a reminder of the power still held by Washington lobbyists. It seemed like a good idea at the time, in 2018 Republicans working with president Trump to slash bank regulations joined forces with red state Democrats facing grim reelection prospects. The group passed a bill that rolled back portions of the 2010 Dodd Frank law. The bill was marketed as a form of relief for overburdened community banks, but it also lifted the threshold for strict oversight and mandatory stress testing of large mid sized banks, it is now being blamed for contributing to the collapse of Silicon Valley bank and signature bank whose executives lobbied for the Bill, the effort drew an army of more than a thousand lobbyists, companies and trade groups specifically mentioning the legislation spent more than $400 million in 2017 and 2018, according to an Associated Press analysis, Americans for financial reform, a watchdog group says we can draw a direct line between the deregulation driven by the bank lobby, and the chaos of the last few weeks. The veto is likely to stand and is an early sign of how the president will deal with House Republicans intent on undoing parts of his policy legacy, but it also serves as an olive branch of sorts to environmentalists who were upset by the administration's recent approval of a massive oil drilling project in Alaska. Robyn Pfaffman: A Trump Indictment Will Only Raise His Popularity

"At this hour at the NYPD erecting the barricades a place you've been as a reporter many, many times before. Talk about it. Wriggling brothers, they say that the circus is gone. This is the new circus. What a joke. The whole thing is a joke and it's going to backfire. You know, it's funny because a lot of liberals I know are so excited. Oh, Trump is the first ever of a former president going to be indicted and arrested in a mug shot. Listen, they still don't understand this guy, Todd. This is an 80 year old man, okay? He doesn't have that many years left. He's never been arrested. He probably thinks it's funny because the whole thing is going to be tossed anyway. These cases are beyond the statute of limitations for one. Number two, I'm dating myself, but does anyone remember when Bill Clinton paid off what's your name there? And Paula Jones, Paula Jones. 8, $800,000 and the nose dropped. She got wasn't even that great. That was a bad nose job. Yeah, she should have spent some more money on the nose job. Anyway, TS, we're dating ourselves here, but did anybody care about Bill Clinton spending the same money? The hush money. No, nobody cared back then, and it was, you know, is 7 or 8 times the dollar amount. This is a circus brag is going to backfire on him, the charges are going to go right into the circular file. The fed didn't want to try these cases. There are lumping in the hush money with a federal case trying to tie it all together. It's a bunch of hooey. It's going to go nowhere other than raise the popularity of Donald Trump.

Emerald Robinson: 'It's Obviously Not About Stormy Daniels'

"How do you relate this to the raid at Mar-a-Lago and just kind of all of these other things they've been trying to get Trump in different ways and you mentioned kind of the state versus federal things and I'm sure that this is probably all people who think the same of Trump and that. They want to get Trump on something. Do you think that this could be because they weren't able to move forward with other charges or other things that they tried to find because it seems like them going after him over this stormy Daniels thing. It's kind of silly. I mean, Bill Clinton probably did much more paid off people. And I'm not even saying that that Trump did anything wrong, but just it just seems like a crazy reason to arrest a former president because there are many crimes that we can say about Biden, Hillary Clinton, others. And so do you think that this is about the stormy Daniels case or do you think that this is kind of their way of going after him because they weren't able to do more from Mar-a-Lago or other investigations? That's exactly what I think it is. It's obviously not about story Daniels. And when you look at the amount of money that's usually involved with high profile people, especially millionaires and billionaires, the amount of money she was given suggests that there was nothing there. It was go away money. I know lawyers who, you know, unfortunately, orchestrate deals like this all the time. And this is an extremely small amount of money. And these do happen all the time. And I think you're right. I think what you suggest, they tried with the radial Mar-a-Lago, but that all fell apart when you learned about Biden's retention of classified documents that are sound much more sensitive than anything that Trump had.

Idaho poised to to pass bill that allows firing squad execution

"The latest state in the nation to allow execution by firing squad. With issues surrounding the drugs for lethal injections. Idaho lawmakers have passed a bill that will allow a firing squad to execute an inmate as an alternative. The measure which passed with a veto proof majority goes to the governor's desk. There is one convict on death row who's had multiple postponements of his execution because the lethal injection drugs were not available. The death penalty information centers as Mississippi, Utah and Oklahoma, also allow executions by firing squad. South Carolina passed a similar law, but it's on hold with illegal challenge.

"Well, we still have more to do. But yeah, you won that. You know, I don't like this version of Jameis. It's not quite a turn that TikTok. Yeah, just it was more fun when he was either throwing pictures or touchdowns. Now it's neither. Now he's just in the middle. Yeah, now he's just kind of, they're just punting on fourth down. And he's got, it seems like he has good weapons. Sure. Yeah, where's the electricity? Once Michael Thomas proved that he was back early earlier than we thought, even though it's like three years later. You thought that you figured they'd put up points, but I mean, the fact that olave is actually good, you would have thought, all right, this is an offense out of score 24, 27 points a game. Nope. And I can't tell you could make a case that they've just gone against good defenses and the Carolina's defense is better than people realize. So this would be the game. That's 300 and 50 three yards passing. I know, but it was a lot of their down 15, whatever. It didn't felt like it didn't feel like consequential yardage. Did you feel like I never felt like they were in the game? No, I guess. I'm just looking at there not the lobby was great. A 147. Trey kwon Smith at a 105. It was Michael Thomas who really couldn't get started or drivers. I mean, that fumble, that Kamara fumble, just doomed them. They really just didn't come back from that. Well, we'll see this week because I think this is the saints offense has a chance to get going. This will be the week. They're saying they may cancel this game because the queen, they have to go week three of the morning of the queen. Jesus. Can you imagine having respected either way? Political figure that people would love this much? Like a football game, week three would be in jeopardy. I'll probably get hate mail just for wondering about this. I have a 7 fairly watchable. Okay. Browns falcons starting with that one in Atlanta. And I'm going to acquire the falcons are just ineligible for the poop vector. They're super fun to watch. I really enjoy the Drake London's really fun. Fence is really fun. Quarter old Patterson, he not only looks like Dickerson all of a sudden. He was like hurtling dudes on lean frogging defenders, I know. Oh my God, really. And I think Mariota is I really enjoy him. I think he fumbled that sit there. He did, right? That was kind of like just did it for them. He fumbled the snap, and because I had money in the falcons, I was like, here we go. It's another, it's another birthday anal probe for your guy, Bill. But no, Gino Smith had other ideas. Right. We'll stop betting the foul. They won today, so that was good, but in general, let's just enjoy them. I don't know what the word is, but I just thought the line was off. I usually bet when I think the lines off and that one, they were favored by one. I thought they should have been favored by three. Because I think Seattle's bad. Well, they're bad, but some of these teams have such easy games on their schedule, like the bears Texans. They win by accident. And if Seattle's got a home game, it's kind of had a beat today, right? It had to be one of them, but you're right. Yeah, you think. Frisky. What'd you have for this line? I have browns by two at Atlanta. You get this one too. I said plus one. It's plus three. It's a full three. I figured, I don't think

"Mind that genius through his 35th birthday. When he is final NBA title and his final game in Los Angeles and game 7 was celebratory balloons hanging over the court that never ever dropped. The greatest winner in sports history learned about those balloons before the opening tip. He felt the anger bellowing inside him. He embraced that darkness one last time. I knew we would win. He told me. I believed him. Remember, every legend reaches the finish line differently. Magic retired because HIV, bird's body broke down, same for west and well, Kobe hung around for two more giant paychecks. Kareem and Oscar stayed one year too long. Hakeem Shaq and Moses kept playing and playing until nobody wanted them anymore. Jordan left it the perfect time, missed the attention, returned to the wizards for two bizarre seasons. Durant still playing so we don't know about him yet. Bill Russell was the only Pantheon guy who actually nailed his exit. And yet for four solid decades, his relationship with the one city he ever played for remained unsettled. How bitter did it get? When the Celtics retired his number in 1972, Bill Russell skipped the ceremony. He no showed it. Who does that? Well, he made the same point again and again, his loyalties lay with his teammates, red rbac, and Walter Brown, that's it. Not the fans. Definitely not the city. He didn't care if he ever went back. Or so he claimed. By the end of our second day together, I got to say, I didn't totally believe him. Deep down, he still cared about all this stuff. Obama, Kobe wilt, Sam Jones, Larry siegfried the trophy case that Boston Herald headline. Every little piece mattered. And maybe he needed the time to. You wouldn't have wanted to be a black basketball star in the 50s and 60s. Idolized for everything on the court, treated like a second class citizen off the court. The first wave of black MBA stars Russell Oscar, Elgin, Kareem, even well, they were unquestionably damaged by the experience by the unforgivable hypocrisy of it all. Even Russell's teammates didn't fully realize how horrible it was. During a sports century episode about Russell in 1999, bob koozie actually broke down during his interview. Believing let Russell down as a friend more than anything. That koozie never fully realized how difficult things were for him. Russell channeled all that pain and resentment into winning. Nobody came through more times, put more thought into it. Gave more of himself to one pursuit. He remembered everyone who helped him. Everyone who doubted him. Everyone who never appreciated him. And the whole experience in Boston and in America too left him sitting on an island 3000 miles away, making one sorry city sweat out mistakes. It could never change. We said our goodbyes, I told Russell that I hoped he would return to Boston one day. And a few months later, we premiered mister Russell's house and banged that theme home. Honestly, I want to viewers to think, man, I hope he forgives Boston someday. A few months later, he actually did. Turns out that 8 foot statue was going up downtown with a Russell showed up or not. The city needed it more than he did. The mayor begged him to return, so did the Celtics owners, Russell's daughter, his friend Charlie, Adam silver. Everyone else Russell trusted in his life. Eventually the great Bill Russell caved, he agreed to come back to Boston. November 1st. 2013. He turned 80 6 years old just last month. Every few months, word starts spreading that he's not feeling that well, that he can't move around anymore. And then every June there he is. Front and center at the finals again. The NBA sends him to the deciding game so he can present the Finals MVP trophy. Remember Russell would have easily won 9 of ten of these if that a word existed in the 50s and 60s. Now it's called the Bill Russell NBA Finals most valuable player award. And in a weird way, that actually turned out better. He wins every year. You know what else I believe? Those few minutes on stage with the new champs might be keeping him around. The recognition and respect, the happy handshakes, the reverence from the best player du jour, who just peaked as a competitor, only suddenly there's Bill Russell. And they just melt like a stick of butter. I think he loves every moment of it. I think it brings him back to the only time he was ever truly happy. I think it's the number one thing that keeps Bill Russell going. When you're the greatest winner of all time, even all these decades later. You still want to be where the winning is.

"As quote a rage. He spent the day visualizing that night's game, thinking about his opponent, playing out sequences in his head, revving himself up. And if you think of basketball like chess, it makes more sense. Russell always needed to be two or three chess moves ahead of everyone else. He didn't black shots in the moment, he blocked them 5 hours earlier. That's what made him so great. By the time he slipped on his Celtics uniform, Russell had already played out every game possibility in his head. Carrying that knowledge into the game, then executing it, required an unfathomable amount of mental energy. And once he felt that slipping, not the skills, but the energy itself. That's when Bill Russell knew he needed to leave. And look, I know it sounds impossible. That no human being could actually think that way. But if you think of wrestle as a genius, which he was, then it might make more sense. An example one time Russell's third wave found one of his college games on eBay. She bought the DVD and surprised him with it. They watched it that night. Russell San Francisco team playing Oregon state. And guess what? Bill Russell could rattle off every play before it happened. Not a few of the place. Not half of the plays. Every play for a random college game that happened in 1955, at least four decades before he watched this game again. I can't do that anymore. Russell told me at his kitchen table. I'm older now. If you showed me an old game now, I couldn't remember every play. Just most of them. Oh, okay. Russell

"When that was the coolest show on TV and he said how his daughter was actually impressed by him for the first time. That delighted him to no end. 11 NBA rings didn't make his daughter think he was cool. But a couple of SNL sketches did, he laughed and laughed, that famous Russell cackle filling the whole first floor. We talked about a revelation second wind has extraordinarily out of biography that Russell actually scouted the Celtics after joining them in 1956. Russell wanted to play to their strengths and cover their weaknesses. So he studied them during shooting drills and scrimmages. He built a mental filing cabinet that stored everything they could and couldn't do. And then determined how to boost them accordingly. It was his job to make them better. That's what he believed. To my surprise, Russell mentioned the 2012 superstar devouring his book and then stealing that specific concept and even thanking Russell for his help. Naturally I expected the player to be LeBron, Nash, Chris Paul, maybe Kevin Durant. Nope. Kobe Bryant. Really? I said incredulously. And that's how I learned that Bill Russell, basketball's greatest teammate ever, held a soft spot for Kobe Bryant. Someone who battled more coworkers over the years than Chevy Chase. Russell enjoyed Kobe's competitiveness. He loved his work ethic. He appreciated his respect for history. And over everything else, he was absolutely delighted that Kobe borrowed his scouting idea. No other player had ever mentioned it to him. Russell admitted their leadership styles were different. Proudly revealing that he never criticized a teammate publicly or privately. Not once. Not once in 13 years. What was the point? Everyone already knew Russell was their best player. Why undermine their confidence? How is that productive? Russell believed a basketball team only achieves its potential once everyone embraces their roles. The less thinking, the better. For example, early in his career, Russell asked bob cousy to find a specific spot on every rebound, about 25 feet away from the opponent's basket. On the left or right side. So Russell could snare the rebound, whirl around and throw koozie and outlet pass all in one motion. After a few months, koozie found the spot, they didn't think about it anymore. Shot spot rebound release go. The greatest fast break in basketball history was born. But that concept fails unless everyone embraces their role. That's the thing. Everyone has to understand the role. In Boston, koozie ran the break, Heinz and filled the land and crashed the boards. Bill sharman, Sam Jones, John havoc, they all handled the scoring. Casey Jones and satch Sanders, they handled the perimeter defense. Bill Russell Hannah, everything else. And the everything else varied from season to season, it even varied from playoff series to playoff series. Russell assessed with the team needed, and he tailored his game accordingly. That's what made him Bill Russell. All right, so how do you challenge teammates with that undermining them? Kobe was still trying to solve that question 15 years into his career. That's why I reached out to wrestle. But Russell had already given the answers in his autobiography, second wind. There's one enlightening section about Sam Jones. One of the NBA's first grade scoring guards, but someone who absolutely dreaded the burden of being great every night. And that drove wrestle crazy. Eventually he learned to accept that they just weren't wired the same way. Sam didn't puke before every big game. He didn't measure his own happiness solely by the success or failure of his team. But Sam happened to be a phenomenally gifted score. Someone who loved taking and making pressure shots, his laconic demeanor worked against him being a legendary player, but for huge moments, it was actually perfect. You could always go to Sam when it mattered. More often than that, Sam came through. Russell always understood Sam was Sam. He'd never bleed basketball like Jerry West did. He'd never obsess over every play like Oscar Robertson did. You are who you are. Bill Russell left Sam Jones alone. So that was one leadership example. When we were sitting in his kitchen in Seattle Russell told us another story after I asked how the Celtics won Russell's last two titles without having a real point guard. They didn't run the triangle offense, so how'd they do it? Going backwards, Russell became Boston's player coach before the 66 67 season, which ended unhappily. Will it sixers demolish this supposedly aging Celtics in the eastern finals? And even worse, during game 5, the deciding game Philly's crowd chanted. Boston is dead. Boston is dead. Boston is dead. The Chan echoed in Russell's ears all summer. After 8 straight titles, the man was not ready to be buried yet. He also wasn't ready to blow up his team, which goes back to what Pat Riley said in the first book of basketball podcast, right? This is hard. Russell wanted to play his best 5 as much as possible. So we asked Larry siegfried to replace the retiring Casey Jones at point guard. One problem. Siegfried was an point guard. This was like asking Gordon Hayward to replace Kyrie Irving. It did not make a ton of sense in 1967. But Russell wasn't hoping for a koozie impression, just someone to dribble from point a to point B call plays start their offense. That's it. Siegfried resisted. He didn't want the added responsibility nor did he want to chase faster players around. Russell gently insisted. No thanks, Larry siegfried said. While the modern solution would be dealing siegfried away, but the Celtics never traded back then. Why? Our back believed that continuity was their single biggest advantage other than Bill Russell. The Celtics only swung one real trade in Russell's 13 years. Mel counts for Bailey Howell. That's it. Amazing but true. So Russell kept cajoling siegfried, never threatening. I'm just appealing to him as a friend. Siegfried relented, but after a few weeks, he decided he didn't like it. He didn't want to play poor anymore. So did the same dance again. And Russell Warren down again. He made it clear this was siegfried's best chance to play. He didn't threaten him. He just laid out the landscape. He said, we have me have a check, Sam, Bailey. All of us need to play. This is your best way to get minutes, Larry. He broke them. And yeah, the Celtics won those last two titles with a shooting guard, bringing up the ball. So much for Boston being dead. As Russell was telling the siegfried story, I couldn't help but wonder how Kobe would have handled it. My Hall of Fame pyramid has 15 guys who rose above everyone else. Jordan, LeBron, Russell, Kareem, magic and bird, will Duncan, Kobe and west, Oscar, Hakeem, Shaq and Moses, and Durant. You would have loved playing with ten of those guys. The other 5? Maybe not. No gray player was more selfish than wilt. Someone who genuinely believed that the best situation for world Chamberlain doubled as the best situation for world's team. Nobody was moodier or more loose than Kareem, a brilliant recluse who couldn't connect with anyone until magic and Riley came along. Nobody was more demanding than Oscar, the league's smartest player, the Russell, but someone who talked down to teammates polluted their mistakes. Left them walking on eggshells. Of course, Oscar was a picnic compared to Jordan. A withering, over competitive bully at times. And if you couldn't handle it, you simply needed to find another team. Meanwhile, Kobe tried to evolve into a withering over competitive bully at times. If only because his idol once acted that way, Russell was different, his battles were always internal. And they never affected his teammates. That's why he's the greatest teammate ever, but he's also the most self aware player ever too. During our second day in Seattle, I asked him why he ultimately stopped playing and the answer was simple. He didn't

"Still pretty great game by Pettit, right? Russell's eyes narrowed. I was injured. He said coldly. Incredible. He was still pissed about the 12th title that got away. But that hardcore hoop session paid off the following day. We earned his trust. We got everything we wanted from Bill Russell. And for me and Hershey, this wasn't just one of the highlights of our careers. This was the highlight. Russell never did this stuff he never opened up. He just wanted to be left alone. We got him. We got him for two days. And now we were sitting in Russell's kitchen, trying to remain professional, fighting off the urge to repeatedly high 5 each other while screaming. Yeah, we did it. A three hour hanging Bill Russell's house with Russell talking about anything and everything. Are you kidding me? Suddenly we heard a voice from the other room. Where's Bill? That was Russell's voice. Where's bail? Wait, me? I stood up. Come here, I want to show you something. Bill Russell said, he brought me into his library, which is practically sinking under the books and pictures. During a bathroom break earlier, I tiptoed in there. If only because you can learn a lot about someone just by looking through their books. I noticed my book of basketball, which Russell had allegedly read and enjoyed. The book's condition made it seem like someone had read it, so maybe he did. Without him knowing I signed one of the pages inside and carefully placed it back in the same spot. And now an hour later, I was pretending I'd never seen his library before. Here, look at this, Bill Russell said. He handed me a framed photo of him and Obama taken in 2010 when Obama invited Russell to The White House, gave him the Presidential Medal of Freedom and urge Boston to build a statue for him. Isn't that something he asked me? Only Obama got Bill wrestled a geek out. Man, he loved everything about that day. Once upon a time, Russell meant as much to the civil rights movement as any 1960s celebrity other than maybe Muhammad Ali. He led by example, with carefully chosen words with unshakable pride. He understood the precarious stakes at all times how one unfortunate comment or reaction could derail everything.

"Sad news today, Bill Russell passed away at age 88. He's one of the most important athletes we've ever had. So in the greatest athletes we've ever had, he is the greatest team sport athlete ever. He had an incredible life. He lived it on his terms. I spent two days with him in 2012, and it was the highlight of my career. And ended up turning it into a book of basketball podcast for the indices and one a couple of years ago. We're going to repost that on this feed right now. Bill Russell, rest in peace. Bill Russell spent the last four and a half decades living in Seattle. On Mercer island, about as far from Boston as you can get without falling into the Pacific Ocean. When I spent two days with him in 2012, Russell kept maintaining that he didn't care about Boston anymore. He remembered the city being more of a hockey town. How his Celtics played multiple game 7s in a Boston garden that was less than 70% full. He remembered everyone writing off a budding Celtics dynasty after bob koozie retired in 1963. As if the coups was the reason for those first 6 titles. He remembered the skeptical reaction after red R back named Russell as his coaching successor. As if a black guy couldn't lead white guys, please. He remembered the racist idiots who wrecked his new house, destroyed his trophies, defecated on his walls. Because out anyone ever forget something like that. He remembered Boston fans deifying Larry Bird. How they elevated him for winning 8 fewer titles than Russell did. These sites kept coming up and coming up. And halfway through our second day together. I just assumed Bill Russell would never return to Boston. We were filming a TV show called mister Russell's house for NBA TV. Spending the morning in Russell's basement with the 6 time MVP standing in front of his pack trophy case and telling stories that trophic case was incredible, by the way. A few months earlier, he had undergone a heart procedure. Someone close to him warned us, make sure he doesn't stand for too long. He's still a little weak. Well, like a dummy, I became so enthralled with our conversation that I kept them standing for 90s solid minutes. I still remember exactly where we were. At the tall end of a wall covered with photos, magazine covers and newspaper clippings. Russell had framed a Boston Herald piece from 1986, right after bird one is third championship and many were calling him the greatest ever. You know who disagreed? Larry Joe bird. He maintained that Russell is the best that those 11 rings spoke for themselves. The headline of the piece said, quote, bird. Russell, still the best. And if you think it doesn't mean anything that Russell framed this article, then you don't know anything about Bill Russell. And as we were talking about it, suddenly his eyes went blank. I thought Russell had paused before his next point, quickly realizing that the legend couldn't summon his next breath. He towered over me by 8 inches. I can still see his face, dark and weathered, white beard, whiskers popping from the side like snowflakes. I can still see his vacant eyes, I remember panicking about 1.8 seconds before anyone else started a panic. Oh my God. We killed Bill Russell. Someone frantically pulled over a tall stool. We implored him to sit down. Russell asked for a minute. We stood there in silence, watching one of the 20th century's greatest athletes struggling just to breathe. Someone handed him a bottle of water, that helped. We waited. We decided to change the locations moving upstairs in a Russell's living room to a traditional interview set up with two chairs facing each other. Russell made his way up the stairs. Slowly, painstakingly. You could feel every step. He found his cherry sank into it. The camera crew hustled to turn on the lights and set up, and now Russell and I were just looking at each other. I was concerned. Russell was staring through me with glassy eyes. He was another place. Just concentrating on his breasts. Everyone else was either panicking or whispering and hushed tones and Russell's French Charlie kept telling us, he's fine. Just give him a minute. He's fine. And then boom. Bill Russell was fine. He sprang back to life. I'm okay, he said, unleashing his trademark laugh. We gab for the next 90 minutes like nothing ever happens. The interview ended. Everyone shook hands. Our crew started packing up, and I sat down at Russell's kitchen table with my friend Hershey, the biggest basketball fan I know, as well as someone who helped arrange the interview and the previous night's dinner. Russell accepted us during dinner once he realized how well we knew our basketball history. Although we annoyed him one time. When we praised bob Pettit's performance in the 1958 finals, Russell badly sprained his ankle in that series. So PETA took full advantage and scored 50 in the deciding game 6. We knew this. Russell couldn't stop him on one leg. We knew this too. More than 54 years later, he made a point of mentioning how lucky the hawks were. And we do this, but one of us said something like,

"Sale time. Okay, Bill Hader is here. He was on the 500th episode. This is the thousandth episode. He's also not just a star Barry in the creator directs it and all that stuff. But more importantly, it was on the prestige TV podcast, breaking down. Director's commentary. This is your dream. It's so funny. You love you loved No Country for Old Men. You did the rewatchables with us on that. We talked about the tone and even when you're doing season one of Barry and you're like the Coen brothers big influence and that movie and this season three I know this probably was your number one thing that you wanted out of it, but it's how it played out. This felt like it felt like it was in that vein. It felt like a cold brother's type of season, right? Yeah. Yeah. I'm sure the Coen brothers, I mean, it's like anybody that has massive influence on you when you're young, that it just is in there. It's like, you know, it's like when I was at SNL and people go, oh, you're like, I'm so Hartman or whatever is like, oh, I just grew up watching Phil Hartman. Yeah, but also. You know, it's just in there. You know, you don't even realize you're maybe doing it since I was just so influential to think grained in here. And certain movies are that way and stuff. So for sure, are they actually funny? It wasn't so much no cutting throw men, but the thing we did watch beforehand was burn after reading some of the coverage that they did in burn after reading where you're watching a scene and then you don't realize all the camera hasn't they haven't cut yet. This has all been one shot, but it's on kind of stationary shot where actors are kind of taking each other's marks and stuff like that. And it was really interesting. But Karl hersey, the DP is a big common brother, Stan too. So I'm sure we've all sort of, I mean, we're shooting on 27 millimeter lens, which then Carl knew was like best their lens for close ups. I was like, oh, I didn't know it. I was like, wow, now I'm really being lame. Yeah, I feel like if I saw one of them, I would have to write them a check. Yeah, but that's the thing. The generations, the next one comes, and they're influenced like the previous one. Like writers are like that, the committees are obviously like that. Yeah, you kind of become an amalgam of 8 to 9 people that you loved when you were trying to figure out how to do something. What's interesting about this season, the whole comedy drama thing was.

"All right, so the U.S. open starts in Brookline, Massachusetts. The country club, the country club. Have you played it? Never played it. I lived across the street. Did you sneak on? I did, but you know what? I was looking at Google Earth trying to fit because I remember the hole that we used to sneak on. Yes. And there's the public course that's part of it. I think we used to stink on the public course. I thought we stuck on Brooklyn country club, but it's not on human street. The green that I was thinking was, but anyway, all right. It's amazing that it's there. I think it's going to be absolutely impossible to get in and out of there. I don't know how they're going to figure that out. Important Nathan Hubbard and tomorrow. The fairway rolling crew. We'll see. And then we're all going on Friday. Yeah. That's going to be awesome. I'll either be completely crest fallen or I'll have my step depending on how game 6 goes. I didn't even think about the possibility of mopey Bill Simmons walking around. But they were really absolutely mopey. Angry Bill Simmons. We're going to find I have some good angles. I've already laid the groundwork to find place with good bloody marys. That's where I just make a ton of bets on Friday. A golf bet. NBA draft bets ago. Chat homeground and will he see a chat? FanDuel's own Willie Z he's like, we're basically teammates with him though. Is that true? He just did like a FanDuel thing. Yeah, that's fantastic. Yeah, we already loved him. I love him. He's all over this card. I'm looking at right now. So we're going order biggest questions. First one, there's been a lot of how his Phil is going to be treated because of the live tour. Yeah. And it's interesting. I was in the mode of, I feel like there's going to be a maso element in a good way. Like just kind of riding and giving him shit. But he was treated apparently really well today in the practice stuff. And there's still a lot of people who really like Phil Mickelson. I feel like he's become Darth Vader in a lot of ways, but there's still some people out there who just don't agree. The thing that I'll ask you, and we know that Boston is a pretty sophisticated, I'm not here to blow Boston, but since I'm here. Pretty sophisticated sports fans. I think it's still the case that a lot of the American sporting public doesn't quite have their head around what's happening in professional golf. Right. They know about it. But they don't really fully understand that this has been throwing a chainsaw in a hot tub. Yeah, that's exactly right. So I don't know what do you anticipate in terms of the crowds that will show up at Brookline at the country club. Are they just regular fans, sports fans are like the U.S. opens here? That's cool. Let's go see it or do you think? We know it goes to golf tournaments. It's a mix. I mean, it's a gigantic golf tournament. It's not just a regular golf tournament. But you have that kind of, you have the rich sip up. Yeah, sweater. Yeah, the people who I mean, it's actually how they do it. Where everybody who belongs to the country club, I think they get two or four tickets, so all those people. People calling it favors, but you asked me before what the buzz is for the tournament. And I just feel like the Celtics has overwhelmed it in all these different ways. If this was even a week later, the fill and the whole, the live tour. I think it would be such a bigger story locally. Right now, it's like self Celtic Celtic Celtics, and that's it. So. Well, I honestly think that he's going to get a pretty favorable reaction. Unless somebody shows up who's really been following all of the twist and turns with the Saudis and has a point of view, wants to do something, you know, make a point about the 9 11 families or the journalists from The Washington Post that was killed. And yet, you know, or evil Norman, just looming behind ship knock, a guy on ship knock that weird photo of him. Kicked out. It almost looked like a cardboard cutout of Norman. Yeah, I mean, that whole thing is such bad vibes. Every which way. But to answer the original question, I think the crowd will be mostly favorable, but I do think there's going to be a couple of people. It only takes one or two, and the mics will be up close and everything. And who knows what kind of reaction he'll have, if any, he's been a very, this is the weirdest version of Phil Mickelson, any of us have encountered through his entire professional career. Elon Musk face though. They're talking about this for the pod. That's super tight eyeball phase where you're just, you look like you've just been electrocuted up your asshole. I mean, what drugs do that? Is that riddle? And if you're 51 years old, is that what happens? If I ever had that look on my if my face ever looks like that, you have to tell me. Like ten years from now, it's like, oh my God, he's got Elon Musk face. Just assume something horrible had happened. But Phil's dressing, like you were telling me that there's people are joking about how he looks like Hulk Hogan and the NWO. 'cause he's showing up at these press conferences and like all black or nearly all black his hair is greasy and slick black is licked back. He's got facial hair. He's ever had facial hair before. It's clearly intentional. Here's my hot.

"Us for the most foreign brady and grop and adamant above. Sometimes we take for granted what how hard it is. Today's nfl with all our rules and flags going against the defense ought to be able to grabner. Execute judah that level and be able to perform man or full sixty minutes. Yeah it was similar to the first super bowl we won. I told you. I'm on the team for beat. The rams were the rams came in and they had this offense near like. This is what we do. You can't stop it and then ballot check like we're going to take away all the things you like to do in this offense in you're going to have to go to a plan b. and each time with the two thousand one rams in the two thousand eighteen or whatever that was ramps they kind of didn't know how to go to the plan b. And you guys were like cool. We're gonna we're gonna do this. In retrospect devon was their thing they should have done or were you guys. They just weren't scorn on you that day. I think i think that's the part about being. Here's each week as jane knows from three years. Yes we had a new game plan. We were gonna do what we did. The week before And that super bowl was rarely accredited access which we changed basically. We did all year. You know we probably line eight percent man to man and i was saying that game. We probably only played thirty to forty percent. Man to man in the whole game Nothing dasell was toughening and they did try to do some different things But i'll say it was a big credits offering segment lately so well Upfront and stopping the run. Now we were able to do so many different things in a secondary and things that bill was thinking that we could do we able to ask you remember talking to them that year. He said that when you have a lot of smart good football players he said as a coach to different things that you come up with that she wanted to do. Sometimes you just don't the personnel from just a mental standpoint to be able to do all of those things several blends together That's what you know your chance. Apple really good defense. Good team of offices on all as well so that year was a combination. I think of just really good coach. Come not gain Players getting together sitting down at execution and knowing won't our weaknesses were and what our strengths run. I think doing this. Here's the fence. Gilmore comes back. I think could get to that level yet. Think we had. I think we have good components. Were building good. Relationships and communication parche And i thank. You don't like an eighteenth. Jenny like he was early in the season. We we've heard that good defense. We went down to jacksonville. Got spanked went to detroit week tune and got spanked just ahead continue to progress and get better and better and i think that's something that you know. We can look back and say eight a lot of hard work not one incident and we get that mentality incidents year. I mean th the chiefs game was the game from that postseason that holy shit ya that shocked a lot of people like we put a lot of work in doing and study a lot of in practice talking about different things that was happening in practice. I we don't like we got to change that. And our our deepens. The coaching staff had no problem communicate with us players. And all of us kind of like less out together And i think that's a little so fun. And that that whole jason mahomes best quarterback i've ever played against hers at somebody else is too young for me to put him right there at the top. And me in the league. Going against peyton manning. Tom brady soldiers just by time. He's done he's gonna be he's gonna be in that conversation but man i remember earlier. Marc career we played in foxborough. Lost a brady off fifty nine zip and the week. They go back home. Play against the colts and lost pay. Man i mean you talk about a two game stretch as a rookie out there watching those two guys go to work unbelievable. Was there anything different about them. When you're going against them back to back like that too one guy do something that the other guy didn't do and vice versa. Was it just like they're just reading. Everything you guys are doing and picking it apart. I will say that difference for nothing definite by speeches. Still when you go against the division opponent information and would you put into it because of which you know as so drastically different versus going against opponent outside the division so we came to go against new england. Obviously they they. They tourist apart game was rain snow and the whole darn but we got ready to play against peyton manning i me the and stuff we got was about this. High of all the communication scrimmage so for me as a rookie come and just like man amount of work that we are funny and go against a pay a man of because you know more you go against the same team twice a year every year whereas wounds in another division. It's every few years you don't get saying intel so it's hard to know as much so i remember early on man ws always talk about the comparisons of He's got a chance to see tom every day in practice and may going against A and twice a year. we'd argue about. Who was the better quarterback. But they were you when you have arguments. I doubt it becomes pointless out so wall when a two guys back good. Will you know who won. The argument brady. He's still playing manning's doing manning's broadcaster went five years past who Who do you have devon. Who's the best quarterback played against her or you still waiting not for me as tom. Laying off seattle played him in a game But in practice every day. Going against him has competitiveness Each day of practice. That obscene made us better a deficit. Part of i think even at the end of seasons as being better Was you know with bill. You're gonna go over the and practice you know we're not gonna start the season and just scout team. We're going to continue to get the work of good good. So yes tom. Everyday practice It was tough because he he does whatever it takes away. You know it's not always gonna be five. Hundred yards fastened a candy but it could be something totally different but he gets it team at offense in the best situation have a bunch of positive place and also try to win the game. Jason you came into the brady patriots. Run.

"Round. I want to get as many questions as i possibly can. So we'll start here. You guys went head on sunday. Miami stinks it out Jason your team ended up winning. What is the taunting rules with your brother. After the game. What happens to you. You give him shit immediately. Do wait six hours like you guys have been competing your whole ads. What do you immediately drive. Where our office is on the field at once. We got the first down and started. Taking these on the sideline yelling. His name started talking trash before a game. He hit a zeros. On o'clock we move. You say devon i lord here Actively game jalen hill silmi genucel. Your your brother was screening name on a sign wa a still blocking out the noise so was there a bet. You guys have little wagers on this dinners what happens. What are your legal wagers on this. Just a lot of trash. Desmond's thought we worked out together all summer and he's been talking trash to me all summer. So it was just a ton of trash-talking bragging rights. So i have a bragging rights for now. But they're going to get another crack at it a end of the season so we'll see how goals devon as the trash talking ever gone too far. Have you guys ever had to be separated. What was the worst trash-talking Competitive thing you has got into Nothing try but back in two thousand eleven. We owe birkin oscar that rutgers we stay some words In all our former team base that get in us us bogged down. We get pretty competitive on training together. A go network. What what e- you so you obviously brothers. What is their weird stuff. You compete in like scrabble checkers. Any sort of dumb games video games. What else do you guys them. Growing up it was a video games and one on one basketball games We will we have played video games. My ma will be in other room yelling at us to cut it all and at we go outside and we just play against each other No score being kit and we would just go at it and those games usually end in a fight and our mom. Megan us come in the house too. So those two things growing up for us now brought out. The i guess the best and the worst in what who's who's better basketball head. Who but you said i of. What are your game similar yet. Different games because usually with twin brothers. They end up doing different roles in basketball for some reason. Yeah i would say we both play off each other He's more of a point on off guard. I usually will guard the ball handler. The off the ball on defense so we definitely played off each other. Are you allowed to play basketball anymore. And by by the football contract you're not allowed or you can sneak out now weakest. Oh boy i. I play for a while open so by the last few years as i've gone. Older is not as easy and all season hoops. I've had later later shoes us yet. Just wait till you hit your early forties Everything goes on all right more speed round. Jason make me feel good about mack jones by new hero man. He didn't make any mistakes in a game was poised even between. He's yelling at the the offense to get it all at just a guy that seemed in total control. That often is making checks. At the line of scrimmage Even when we wash film in a preseason guys a rookie but he's playing like a veteran now there so we kinda knew are to bring our best game ought to be able to defeat him. Devin when did you know you had one with back. I think. I think when he came in just to see how he went about everything. You'd obviously i. I tell people on transition from college. Nfl quarterback. it's hard to know what these guys can do. But i was saying max. Donde attitude has approach to the game I think made a lotta veterans. Really like him a lot. He still gets mad at himself. He's hard himself a lot. And i think a lot one-time by your rookie young may so mistakes. Just keep going on. I think guys saw right away. You know what he wanted to do with the control he had when he was out on the voice So it's been fun so far. Just wash has growth From china can't always at war is an important for rookie. Qb jason you can answer this the rookie. Qb has got to come in. And he's got to win over the linemen who like. He has to be like one of the guys. What else does that person have to do in that situation. Especially if he's a first round pick a form of a ended a day are league as performance basically We have friends guys. We play before a long time. I'll when somebody comes out lock when we go out on that field. The naper form has nothing guys. Respect more than god. I can go out there and play ball something or the rookie quarterback rookie receiver corner. Whatever it is out there you can play some football guys gonna respect and love you while. I was impressed that i thought the second half especially because the dolphins defense was really good in that game and he kinda managed the speed of it which was unusual for rookie. All right this for both you jason. You could take it. I bill ballot check. Funnier than people realize less funny than people realize or exactly as funny as we think. Funnier than people realize for. Sure ally you a lot. Funnier than people realize is funny. How house often it happens. Guide from in call within the first week Like even like matsuda sits by me hightower judaize laughing nonstop and kind of looks at us. Why are you not latham. We just been here for stages do not expect some lettings. That comes out of bills. Now is pretty funny. It seems like he has the biggest misperception between like his press conferences. Which is what. America judges in bayreuth. He's as boring as possible. And those press conferences versus what everybody says behind the scenes so jason. You must have been stunned when you came to the patriots you must or did your brother like condition. I a nine years of listening to Talk about us. I walk into that bill now. Know a lot of kind of what goes on. Who's what so. I learned a lot from deb leading up to joining the team. And you'd played for a few head coaches at that point. Yeah did four. Different ones tennessee. In cleveland on just one after first year in cleveland i told my agent i wasn't going back seat. Five head coaches then you go to ballot. Check the greatest coach of all time. What what was the biggest thing where you.

"Gronk is playing quite frequently and as a more regular part of the offense and especially in the super bowl where he caught two touchdowns and helps beat the kansas city chiefs as focal when it came to the passing game during the prior week's from the postseason but gronk played more frequently and i mean played almost ninety percents of the snaps the packers almost ninety percent against the chiefs. Those that have been two of his highest single week to week. Snap count percentages. Same thing. I think maybe even a better example. Be a guy. Like fletcher talks with the eagles. Several years ago where during the regular season he was typically a sixty five seventy. Seventy five percent stakeout guy and he gets to the post season butler cox because he's awesome and the eagles need him to be a player during the postseason when he's playing basically every stop during the postseason I've heard the exact numbers in front of me but frederick cox but he was yeah typically seventy five eighty percent guy during the regular season in two thousand seventeen and then ninety percent. Seventy nine percent eighty nine percent in their three playoff victories. That year so i think it's more about usage when it comes to the nfl than sort of a guy with a different skill. Set ecessary like i know that Joint then comes to mind is a guy who was supposed to be better in the postseason. Maybe he was. He's got some great postseason games. But i don't think his skill set changed his usage. They're more about. Maybe just as easily or the fact that the pats just needed to grow a lot that they were in so many Take games and shootouts. Grady games during be edleman era. Last question here. Very football-related topical given that i was in the uk. Fantastic from the hash. Kay he says. What is your typical does order. And what level of spice do you add in the extra sauce after table. This is a question during dear to my heart. Bandeaus is a very important restaurant to me. If you're not familiar with nando. Which i think most americans are not. Because they don't know. I don't wanna sit. At least most americans do have not been to a place where there isn't that does which is mostly thank you. Hey australia africa Some places in asia. Nando is a perry perry chicken restaurant. Spicy restaurant fits phenomenal. It is the absolute goto place for me. When i am traveling to one of those places literally. I went to the last week and a half and it's less than soccer winning some art and i went to and the first thing i did after checking into my hotel. After landing was jet lagged. I was tired. I walked ten minutes to my local london endo's and was delighted to enjoy I don't want to say educated. Knows i don't think i as cheeky but certainly a delicious. Nan does lunch If you live in the us chicago and dc or out of the dc area. Now i bet there because of nando does but it doesn't hurt i wasn't upset To end up in dc and have access to live. I two minutes. Roman endo's right now. And i make for lunch today. Myself by order typically depends on where you are. It's the changes from place to place. It's generally the same there's going to be chicken is going to be fries. It's going to be vegetables. It's going to be snow spicy stuff. I in the uk. I was just there. I would usually four chicken bias. I want extra. I know that nanos likes to hype up the heat of the space. I i'm okay with it. Like i think the extra hot is a good balance of spice and and taste. I would say extra extra hot a little beyond what i want. Typically it is hot for sure. But i think at this then flavor at that point and i do of course the hash. Add more extra hot at the table. It's cooked marinated extra hot still dousing chicken extra hot sauce at the table. I think you can order the sauce on amazon. If you are someone who is interested in morton it does where you live. But i would recommend it certainly a delicacy to me. I am big nando. Said i dream. Of course they're going to happen. That can get an endo's black guard. I think that would be the ultimate in. That would be the only thing in this out for like i. Don't i don't want to you know do ads on twitter. I don't wanna do ads on instagram. I would cares about me as an influence there. But nando influence our i am in. I will always be in. I will always be ready to fight for. The non does costs leaving eight. If that hope you guys enjoy this podcast. I love getting to your questions at like you. Guys have some cool ideas maybe opinions. I agree with some time. So i think. Different perspectives is always valuable role. Must here man. It's a week or two away before the season starts. I mean it is happening. We're gonna have a couple more shows before season begins to show next week. Make you may take a second show next week depending on how this works with labor day But we'll have two more shows for you before the season begins and then you guys know it will get back on that right back on the schedule audio every single week. "He looked great and he was okay and this season the bears with i think jay cutler was the primary quarterback that year gas was not qualified to be a head. Coach wasn't very good at it. Even if he had a successful first season with ryan. Tannehill what. I'll say about this situation now. When it comes to robert sala is that the forty niners ranked twenty sixth and defensive adjusted games. Loss applaud sat in two thousand nineteen and they were dead last an adjusted games last year. The most injured defense in all football. Didn't have nick bosa for pretty much. The entire season. Richard sherman mystic agenda the year. Most their secondary guide heard before his buckner Start offensive tackle got traded and they fell from second in devi away to six wasn't like they felt a fifteen through twentieth or twenty fifth wasn't like they were running a super complex gala. Make any ajar They ran a basically getting adjustments like robert saleh adjusted for the talent that was missing both in two thousand nine hundred twenty twenty and had excellent seasons on defense with both of those Injury hit rosters. Like i know that. It's definitely i don't know i'm taking robberies word for here. I know they had a lot of talent. But that talent was always available and it wasn't always playing at a high level before robert saleh. Got there and kind of grew into jobs so to me. I think. I don't think that robert salad is a to be a great head coach but i think you have to give him a ton of credit for making an impressive defensive work with granted a lot of talent available on paper but not always available in practice. Let's take in the afc east here. Actually yes second day. Afc is here Than sullivan say bill. How do you think the patriots will balance different themes between camden and mack jones. When they're so different or do you think they've already chosen internally and are holding off announcing it until their first game. It's a good question. I i don't think it's going to change that much and i. I think we're change is with the running game obviously canvas eight threat to run in a way that back jones is not. I think it will change in short yardage where mack jones is not going to be running power but in quarterback power or anything on a regular basis but i also think badly patriots could use cam in those situations as a short yardage option. I wouldn't shock me if he got a sort of in hill usage package as the second quarterback when it comes to the passing game though. I don't think it's going to be all that much different. I think with either quarterback. I would expect a lot of. Rpo's a lot of easy reads a lot of tr- safe completions. I i don't think. Max joseph gonna come in and look like tom brady when it comes to. You know how. He's reading defenses. How he is You know moving stuff around how he's changing stuff at the line. And i think kim is underrated when it comes to that stuff when it comes to really defense is when it comes to change things screaming veteran quarterback in the nfl. So you know. I think that mack jones may be being more accurate passer than the long-term and cam newton Maybe so as a rookie. As well. But i do think that you know the passing game is not going gentle that much. I think the running game Outside of the red zone. That's assured yardage is going to be different. And i think that the patriots you know hyphen running essentially the same running game. What the a few tweaks here and there which lasted for cam but generally with brady already the same rushing attack for for twenty years. I think it's going to be two different for mac jones if he is a starting quarterback and i think he will be The week one starter I don't think they've announced it yet but it should happen. I think pretty soon. Much joan starter. Give what happened with cam. Missing time because of cova. Let's take another question about a quarterback here from lisa brzezinski. Who says which team or player do you think had the best offseason in terms of setting themselves up for the future. Mrs actually really easy question for me. The answer is trey lance. The niners quarterback up with kyle shanahan for several years for his full radio. I would Long-term coach with the niners with titletown around him receiver at running back only offensive line Dream landing spot for trae lance no different to me than patrick mahomes several years ago. Landing with andy reid. The quarterback coach. You could sort of you know. Make the most out of his talent. I think that if trae lance went to the bears i would have been very worried but going to the niners. Going to caution him. He had no choice in the matter. They got pick the nighters but going there. I think such a great situation and he's going to have the best possible chance. Turn into a superstar over the next years. Which i think. That's exactly what is going to happen with trae lands in the years to come. You questions left here as we finish up. Let's get a question. Let's let's do a hypothetical question here from flannel man ban mostly because i like the name flannel bam bam assuming all other factors are equal. Would you win more football games sash. Better offense with a bottom three offensive line and top ten offense of weapons or i don three offensive weapons and a top ten offensive line. This great hypothetical question bank you dan..

"To get back going but then by the time he finished rookie deal was that level of being a really underrated pass. Rusher i think honestly. I don't think the jets mind over under in vegas move when carlos got hurt if it did it was by no more than a half win like. He's a useful player. But i don't think the jets were going to make or break. Their season based on whether carl lawson was an impactful edge rusher I like where the jets are going. I like some of the moves. They've made like a good chunk of the moves they've made but we're still point with jets. Were so much of what. We're we're hoping if your debts fan is good is perception or projection. I should say I guess people should be excited about. Zack wilson wilson's a good. Like people were excited about sam darnold and he was pretty bad with the jets. We don't know about the secondary and there's major questions at running back half. The offensive line is a question and even the offensive. Lineman tucker should try to be very good but we don't know at this point like he's just starting his. Nfl career and the kyw beckton was awesome as a rookie. That's great but you know who knows if philosopher tucker will be on the same level. I hope so but i don't think we can say for sure i think they'll be better this year Than they were a year ago. Not hard after. It was an engaged. But i think the target is really twenty. Twenty two for the jets. 'cause i think that's the of course. The famous second year in the shanahan could be scheme with zach wilson. I'm gonna get that extra first-round pick the trade having another beer in the system I think you're that's the point where i wanna see a big improvement. That's that's where. I wanna see that sort of big leap to five hundred or clip. Becca she can't do country anymore. But that seven eight win range. I don't think that would have happened this year. But i do think that's maybe in the cards for twenty twenty two. Let that sir. Another jets question actually from robbie who said i counted seven first round picks on the d. line for the forty niners roster from last season. Do think there is any chance that rob sal struggles to coach it defense. That isn't already loaded with talent and potential. And i think the answer robbie is yes of course. But that's true coach. "Value getting with these quarterbacks asked the top of the quarterback market prices is so valuable when you can have a quarterback signed for three or four million dollars for the top of the market is thirty five million dollars. I mean even if that quarterback is just average. It's such a significant opportunity to have one of those guys on a rookie deal and i. I know it's only for three years or so. It's the rookie contract length of four or five years You'd get leverage as you negotiate that second contract but typically. We see guys like josh allen or shawn watson or Windsor golf signing after three years but still a ton of money. You're saving over the first three years. So i do think that the my skepticism about those deals has been not angel that well. I think i'm more inclined to be okay with trading up for a quarterback in terms of how my feelings have changed about the deal. I'm more inclined to think that those rookie quarterback's valuable. I've read about that. I wanna say earlier in the offseason. Everybody at some point recently But i think the evidence says that it's a. It's still a good deal at that. Even though teams have gone more in that direction of going after quarterbacks on rookie deals they're playing better than they were in years past. They're not like there has been a drop off in terms of the play scene. The veteran contracts go wrong. Loosing is like winston goth you know flail on their second contracts and for teams to have to eat a ton of money to trade those guys so i i think there is a logical way to go about that and this leads to the next question from ras pan. Arjun sorry i mispronounced your name. Ross that's on me might believe it's pathogen The browns rose asks don't seem to have a sense of urgency to recite baker mayfield. I don't know if i agree with that but they have not resigned. Let's say do you think they would adopt your idea of flipping baker and trying to get another high pick for a cheap rookie quarterback in the draft. They are a very analytically based for an office. And i think this is an excellent question. Ross i absolutely agree that the browns are very analytically based front office Kevin cisco's very smart very very smart. I think if anybody in the nfl would have a serious conversation about this possibility. It would be the cleveland browns. And think if there's ever a quarterback where you can make a case this would be a bad idea based on what you've seen. After three years it would be baker. Mayfield the guy who when things have been right when he's had three players around him especially good protection on the offensive line. He looks like a very good quarterback when things don't look good when the lions play all that well but as receivers are all afflicted by covert that they were last year up. Wetland things are baker. Mayfield he looks like he's overmatched. It looks a lot more. Like sam darnold now in that situation in the past with guys like for example is it okay like would this guy be able to succeed when things are not perfect for him. That hasn't always worked out that way. When the rams offensive line struggled jared goff struggle. When mcveigh didn't have maybe all the advantages that he had a few years ago. When the offense was sort of transitioning a bit. Jared goff struggled. And we've seen that with baker mayfield to me though. I think so much of what's going to happen with. This baker situation depends on how he plays in two thousand eight hundred eighty one because if he's the guy from the street tried last year where he looked like he was the focal point of that football team when the browns were throwing the ball more frequently than i think. A lot of people noticed On early downs they were more of a past friendly team and writing beckham back up the bigger meals baffled as that guy that guy's very effective and the browns not only will pay him but should pay him and i would have no issues with that at all. But chances aren't 2021. The offensive line is not going to be as healthy as effective as it was in twenty twenty. I think their lineman missed a total of seven starts last year. They're five starting offensive lineman during the regular season now if baker takes a major step backwards. If he doesn't look like that guy he was the second half of twenty twenty felix more like the guy from two thousand nineteen having the browns would trade him. Because i don't think it happens on a trade value. But i think just probably say okay. We're gonna play this out. We're gonna follow babies. Joe flacco years at education and kind of see what happens here and if you are that guy. Because we don't know re you've been inconsistent. And i think that the fans in cleveland having been i think glynn fans have been so American like this. But it's the truth from the twitter feedback. I've got him like they've really got on a rollercoaster with baker. Where after your one if you criticise baker you were an idiot after your too if you commented baker you're an idiot and after your three. We're back to the criticism famer if you criticise baker. You're a moron. And there's no possible way to justify any principal baker mayfield and i think that if he if he takes a step backwards in your floor. We're going to be back to everywhere in year two. So i think this year's going to make a lot and i think that i don't think the browns wannabe bad by any means but i think it would be easier for them if he were good enough to make the decision for the cleveland. Browns are struggled to the point. Where these sort of made the decision for them in the opposite direction. But i think the tough for any team if you're going to do this. Is that if you make this decision if you trade that quarterback especially for a team has had so few good quarterbacks over the last twenty years as the cleveland browns. If you make this decision you're basically all in with the next guy like if bill belichick made that decision would it be as big of a deal. But if the browns do it and the x. guy isn't as good as baker. Mayfield is everyone's getting fire. And that's a lot of risk i think it's a risk worth taking given the upside and the opportunity. Get if you have a guy in the next draft you really believe in. But i think that's a very scary risk and a lot of coaches and a lot of might include the cleveland. Browns would not be willing to.

"People will take either half that formula. Just say l. If he can just be you know x percent of lamar accidents than he's going to be great and i don't know if jalen hurts. Has that sort of rushing or bbb. The passing upside. But lamar jackson has but i think we saw him being effective runner last year. He fumbled too much but besides that was an effective runner and was not really effective. As a pastor. I think fifty two percent completion percentage I know he was pretty good against the saints. But numbers dropped down after that Lost kind of the shuffle of that Made seinfeld disaster week. seventeen. Jailer not playing. Well inland football game I don't think he has to be super efficient. I think he has to hit big place. I think he has to be sort of. Like a very throwback seventies quarterback where does not have a great completion percentage would if he can average maybe seven and a half yards per attempt. If he can hit chunk plays and scare teams. Who wanna bring that. That sort of eighth player into the boxer scare teams. Wanna try and play You know that sort of like brennan staley gap a half defense if the offensive line can be effective around him. Then i think passing able do enough for the eagles to have a solid offense. I'm also very high. End my smith so i think that Don't they smith has to be a threat after the catch. I think they have to have the ability to get easy place for jalen hurts like i think i wanna see those trunk plays on them. Create easy opportunities for jalen hurts to feel good about what he's doing You know. I think i don't like arab mom up on it. I think if he can be like twenty four worth in passer rating maybe twentieth and qbr because that includes rushing impact as well. I think the eagles can be a team. People are going to be scared of. I think they're better than people are giving them. Credit for right now What's an actor ryan tannehill. Actually sean sullivan asks. What sort of question was sort of season. Excuse me this tannahill need to have get the approval. He deserves or is he. Doomed to always be under appreciated. I was intrigued by this question. Because i is writing tannehill under appreciated. I mean i would say financially is appropriate here appreciate. It is one of the highest payed quarterbacks on football on a significant long-term deal. But i think the thing maybe people miss about ryan tannehill that yes. He is super efficient and that is incredibly valuable and he deserves a ton of credit for being hyper efficient. Passer especially of course off of play action. He doesn't throw the ball that much. Outside of lamar jackson a navy jalen hurts this upcoming season. Teams ask their quarterbacks to throw the ball more than ryan tannehill throws the ball for tennessee. He is the one of the lowest volume quarterbacks in football and maybe even how much of an impact. Lamar jackson is a runner with his hands. I think ryan tannehill probably has less to do than any other quarterback in football now. Yes like if you're going to be a low usage player quarterback you need to be super-efficient ryan tannehill is but i think he's probably appropriately rated. I feel like people know. Ryan tannehill can make you pay as part of that offense. But i think the big question after julio jones's if derrick henry gets hurt can ryan tannehill vocal boy that offense. I think we've seen game for looked like he can be. And i think we've seen games especially in the postseason where it doesn't look like. He is capable of doing that. So i think he has a lot riding on this season not necessarily but in terms of whether he's going to be a guy treated as an mvp candidate or a guy kinda in that. Kurt better kirk cousins. Where he's great. I'm play action But not a guy who going to singlehandedly regularly when you football. Let's take a question about another quarterback here Talking about two quarterbacks actually these are sort of related cascadia. pirate mentioned column. I wrote a couple years ago about the possibility of quarterbacks getting traded at the end of the rookie deal. And i think if you're listening to this podcast you've probably seen this column. I've talked about it. The bunch but basically briefly awesome it up this way. The idea that you would instead of having a cheap quarterback on a rookie deal and then paying that quarterback a lot of money and having to spend less money around that quarterback the idea of sort of cycling through rookie quarterback's on cheap deals and always having salary cap since around than with talent and the missiles the party. I think people miss crucially using the using the quarterback at the end of that rookie deal to trade for the traffic. She would need for the next quarterback take his place basically an action if the rams had instead of resigning jared goff to a massive deal in a couple of years later just changing their mind and giving up on it after. Maybe that's super bowl. Season the year after trading him away for draft picks and then using a pick at the top of the next draft to take A quarterback who would have taken jared goff's place Thinking about the twenty twenty drafts. Ab like for example. If the rams had traded jared goff to the chargers and then use the picks the draft. Justin herbert now. Of course. it's not that simple. I don't know that that would work. But this is just a hypothetical example so cascadia pirate asks. How has the larger. Nfl successes and failures since that column changed. Her opinion on rookie quarterback deals versus bad contracts. I think there's two things that come to mind for me. I would say first and foremost. I was someone who was pretty skeptical of those big trade ups for rookie. Quarterbacks i think that I'm always very skeptical of big tradeoffs for players You see that in my work. Typically it's always right of course there's times are trading up for players works out great. I wrote a column about this a couple of weeks ago where i was talking about a lot of big trade offs and a lot of big trades in january. Kind of look. back and look at illustrates. Some of them look pretty good hindsight some of them not so much But i think. I'm i'm a little more on board with them. Now i think that when the goth and went straight happens even when the patrick mahomes trade happens i was pretty skeptical of those deals. Because it was such a big su- such a significant amount of surplus value being traded away. But.

"Now let's get to the show with me. Bill barnwell guys. So i'm excited to jewish state. Talking with you about your mellberg questions. I think is a really sort of interesting time. We're a weak little over two weeks. Actually the law under two weeks from the start of the nfl season. And i wanted to get some of the stuff. You're thinking about as she could fantasy drafts as you start. Maybe betting on the season as you look at some of the stories that are happening around the nfl and a little bit away from the nfl. As well i got a lot of very interesting questions from people about things totally unrelated to the nfl. So a couple of those but mostly football question sale start with something kind of vaguely related to some of the news that broke this week. And let's start in denver. Where i don't know catheters from denver. But he asked a question about the broncos cal filter asked. The bronco seemed like they will win enough games to miss out on a top quarterback in next year's draft. When will they be able to escape. Quarterback purgatory of course denver. This week Announced that they were going to start teddy bridgewater as their starting quarterback to begin the season. I tweeted this. I think but if i just thought it tweeted it which happens a lot. But with the broncos with their situation idol think starting teddy bridgewater week. One means that. We're not gonna eat your lock. The sheriff doesn't need your lock this year. that probably means teddy. Bridgewater played great which is not out of their own possibility. I'm a big teddy bridgewater fan. But i think that's a situation that we're we'll see vic fangio go back and forth throughout the season. I think we'll see some teddy bridgewater. Some drew locked the broncos team. I put on my column this week about the five teams in the nfl. Most likely to improve their quickest path. Doing so it's going to be improving their league worst turnover margin of minus seventeen from a year ago and teddy bridgewater. Historically i think his interception rate is two point. Two percent He's a guy who can avoid takeaways. A better rate you assumed than drew lock who was unlucky last year but interception reception right over three percent and the guy who doesn't always seem to know where the ball is going. So i think they can be a contender with teddy bridgewater but the point. There's already a frustration of. Oh we should at least you know we should not tank but we should stink because at least if we stink will get a top five quarterback in. I don't agree with that. Necessarily i think we've seen teams get quarterbacks without having to tank look at the buffalo bills a team that we're not taking in sean mcdermott first season. But we're certainly thinking about rebuilding that roster had tyrod taylor quarterback did make the move briefly nathan peterman but then it'd been so bad they had to bring tyrod back. They made the postseason that year. Think at nine seven must their record as the wild card and then they were able to get josh allen. The next traded up a little bit and got josh allen. And of course josh allen after a rough start is turned into a superstar quarterback has of last season. So i think you can get into that range. If even if you are a competitive football team the chiefs i mean where a playoff team perennial playoff team. And we're able to trade up to think ten and get patrick mahomes Aaron rodgers might be available next year and maybe more appealing might be more appealing to him to come play for a team that was competitive in twenty twenty and a team that was tanking and just totally bereft of talent. The bucks with tom brady. I think another situation so. I didn't think there are other ways to find quarterback besides simply having the worst record imaginable so for denver. I think the best thing for them is which quarterback gives us the best chance to win week after we can. I do think back. Barring some dramatic improved july just seem to be on the cards given how he played This year in camp. Teddy bridgewater is probably that guy We had another ten question here. If i'm not mistaken. Let me about answer. Other question about quarterbacks. Here i'm tame. Morgan asked on twitter bill. Do you think it's realistic in this day and age to quote unquote. David carr a highly drafted rookie quarterback this. I'm assuming verb that means to put your quarterback in a untenable situation and have him basically get rude because of that take on the. It's held up as a reason not to start rookies right away. But it seems increasingly anachronistic. Any quarterback at risk of being david card surely wouldn't have gone in the first round. I don't agree Today i do think it seems like it happened to josh rosen. And i don't know that would have been a superstar elsewhere. I don't think anyone can say for sure. But i think absolutely josh rosen. Played behind to terrible lines in arizona and miami without great talent around him for teams that are not particularly good And i think that really hurt him. Sam darnold could be another example of that. I think it's so tough for us to gauge. Who would have been good elsewhere. So i do think that teams are still taking quarterbacks who can be quote unquote david card in the first round. Maybe not the first overall pick the way that David carr was. Maybe if baker mayfield in your to maybe baker mayfield had been on the browns and the browns at hired. Someone who wasn't kevin's defence. Not hired bill callahan. Not upgrade with offensive line. They'd be they just hired Trying to think if it would be a bad coach. I don't pick pick on a coach but just like hired someone who was not up to the standard of improving that situation. Maybe baker mayfield would qualify for that certainly so. I do think that it can happen to quarterbacks were taken in the first round jackson asks on twitter. Am i crazy to be cautiously. Optimistic about josh. Rosen as a falcons fan figure with the ryan around to lead by example. There's an okay chance here. Eventually for smith do something similar to the ryan tannehill experience jackson. Yes you are crazy. P france one point five asks on twitter given jalen hurts is upside as a runner both with scrambling and designed runs. Where do you think he would have to rank league-wide as a passer this year for the eagles to compete for the division title. I of course should mention my column again on the five teams. It's likely to improve. The eagles are on there. When it comes through their chances of improving. I don't think they are positioned to make the sort of second year leap they did with carson wentz several years ago. When i don't know if you remember they went in won the super bowl with nick foles as their starting quarterback but i did think there aren't likely to improve in twenty twenty one and i think what jalen hurts You know. I think it's tough. Because i think part of it depends on. How effective is as a runner. Think lamar jackson is sort of an extreme example the fifties so effective as a runner and a very solid quarterback as well that.

Teddy bridgewater josh allen nfl denver broncos Bill barnwell vic fangio baker mayfield josh rosen sean mcdermott nathan peterman tyrod drew patrick mahomes football tyrod taylor Bridgewater David carr
