What's Up With the Tom Brady Deal? Michele Tafoya Weighs In
"What's up with the Tom Brady deal this year? I mean, he takes two weeks off. I mean, everybody's saying that gisele told him he had to spend time with the kids. I mean, I mean, is this just Tom being Tom? Well, it depends on what which Tom we're talking about. Tom is an incredible competitor. But, you know, over the years, we would ask him, and we covered the Patriots a ton. And we have what we call production meetings. A couple of days before the game or the night before the game depending on if the team was home or on the road, we'd sit out Chris and I are producer director. We'd sit in a room with Bill Belichick for a while, and Tom Brady for a while, then, you know, maybe a defensive player for a while, and you get this opportunity to really ask your own questions to make your broadcast unique. And just about every year for the past 5 years, we'd say, so Tom, someone would say, what do you think? How much longer? And he always bring up his family and his wife, and you know, that his wife really wanted him to spend more time. I don't think that was any secret. It was out there, you know, look, he's 45 now. And she's been holding down the fort. Now, we can all accept that they've probably got a lot of help at home. But who knows? I mean, look, she's a very involved mom. I've seen it when she brings the kids to the Super Bowl. Having said that, this whole time you're saying, okay, so Tom, when are you going to wrap it up here when did we get it surprised me? It didn't surprise me that Tom retired. It shocked me that he went back. It shocked me because I thought once he made the decision, that was a done deal and there was no way he was going to turn his back on that decision. So I was really surprised that he decided to go back and my hunches, maybe his wife was too, and look, there are a lot of rumors out there fight that seems to be the consensus,

You can check out the podcast at Fox Sports radio dot com after we go off the air. We will be back on the air 6 a.m. Eastern Time, 3 o'clock Pacific on Monday, lots of discusses we recap a busy weekend in the NFL preseason. But right now, it's time for the main event. Turn on the news. Let's go to the news desk. Here's Brady Quinn. All right. Here we go. Well, we got to set something straight today. So did you guys see the quote unquote quote from Antonio Brown yesterday? No. Yeah, I did. Yeah. Well, that was actually from a satire account. However, AB did essentially sign off on it, but it read something like this levar could see it. Quote, my biggest regret in my career does it involve calling my GM a cracker or showing up to the Raiders camp late in a hot air balloon with frozen feet. We're throwing rocks at the UPS driver and it definitely does it involve taking my shirt off at doing a victory lap around the jet stadium mid game. Broth thrown up deuces. My biggest regret is that I'll never get to see me Antonio Brown, play a game live. Sure, I can watch the game afterwards, but I can't imagine what that was like for you all to see something like that. Like watching The Beatles or Jesus perform at red rocks. Now a beat took this, he put this up on his Twitter account and said sincerely AB, so again, he didn't write this technically. It is satire, but the fact that he did cut a co sign on it kind of makes it feel like this is his farewell letter. By the way, so I believe it was this ball sacks sports. Put this up because I can't confirm that. So they also put something out that people have fallen for and somebody actually tweeted this over to us and said, why are we not airing out Justin Fields for this? Because they put up a quote from Justin Fields, it says, quote, I'm throwing to guys who wouldn't have made 6 string at Ohio State. That's the biggest adjustment for me with the bears. Wow. It's fake. It was a fake quote. And I don't even know if that's legal if you can legally do that. But they put up this fake quote and people are running with this. They think just a field's actually said this. That's the problem with social media. Although, in this case, though, it'd be a little different if Justin Fields was like, yeah, you're not wrong, right? He should, yeah, he should retweet it. That would be a good move on his part. That would go. That's why you gotta be careful social media. Yeah, just retweeting stuff, but you don't also have to be careful about this time of year, guys. What's in what? So it's election season. There's a lot of local elections and state elections and all that going on. Well, in my hometown of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The police, they were able to locate a stolen campaign sign on Wednesday. They utilized a high-tech tracking device. They like those Apple AirTag devices that you can put, well, one candidate, you have to put a bunch on his yard signs. And well, one of them went missing. And it just so happened that the AirTag led the police. Two, well, the home of his opponent and they did confirm and found the sign in the back of his opponent's car. Her green vehicle. Jacqueline Scott basically pulled up one of Mike lambrick signs and put in the back of her car. When caught red handed, she said that she was actually asked to remove it from that person's yard. However, her opponent Mike Lambert, who signed it was, he's got a signed affidavit proving that Scott did not have permission to do so. So, yeah, I mean, Scott wasn't arrested, obviously, for this, but it has made it kind of a spicy election campaign, pulling up yards. If that one sign, you think is going to be the difference between getting elected and not getting elected. If you really feel that way, you should probably come up with a better campaign in general. Who's going to be swayed just by seeing a sign in the front yard somewhere? That might have been like a great location though, you know? Right. A lot of traffic location. A lot of eyeballs. Levar, it's Fort Lauderdale. Come on everywhere is a great location of Portland. Well, you probably better off on a yacht or a boat. It's a good point. Is there any room on your yacht for that? Is there any room on there? Like a side of it? Come on there. I'd love for you guys to come down and visit, but you guys don't see what I want to do that. Well, listen. I'll put it this way. Any time I want to come to my house, you can. However, Earl Thomas can't say the same. His house in orange, Texas, was struck by lightning. And it is burnt to the ground. I mean. Look, I don't want to say that this is don't say that. I knew that's where you were heading. What you thought it was Italian lighting? Is that what you're saying? What do you mean, what is Italian lightning? What are you talking about? You know, there's this thing, you know, something happened. You know, the place got struck by lightning. Is that like a good fellows where they burn the restaurant? I don't know. That guy on the street. I didn't Italian lightning. Oh no. That was the thing. And I'll go ahead the button virto. "How he handles things. It can't just be because they don't have to talk with the media because of a loophole in the rules, right? There's got to be more to it than this. Why is this approach being taking? Because it's got to be more to it than just, well, if I hire these guys based on Matt Patricia is still getting paid and I don't give them a title, then that way he doesn't have to talk to the media as frequently. I can't imagine that he would risk his entire offensive game plan or the functionality or the development risking it. You got a quarterback going into his second year with a brand new his offensive coordinator just left. I would think if this is the quarterback that you drafted in the first round that you think your franchise quarterback, wouldn't you want to surround him with as much as much offensive mindset as much successful offensive mindset as you possibly could. And he's bringing in two guys that don't really specialize in that. And then it's like, well, there's a loophole in the system. They don't have to talk to the media. I find it hard to believe that that would be the approach. It's just a weird, it's just an odd angle to take with this. That's why I'm wondering. So your point, it's a weird direction that's because as we look around the NFL, and typically when you draft the first round quarterback, what does everyone do? They build around that position. Now, don't get me wrong, they are to a degree, right? I'll tell you this much right now. I'm not a fantasy, I don't do any of that crap, but taekwon forden picked that dude up at some point. He's not like a starter, but I'm telling you, he's going to make an impact on that roster this year. Just watching a little bit from what he did last night, that dude's got a burst like no one else in the NFL. And he is tall, law he'll stretch the field. They're going to have some big time plays that kid this year with the type of speed he's got. But back to the original point. I mean, so most teams are building out around their quarterback. Not only on the roster, but also with your staff. And I don't know that this staff necessarily exudes that, but again, he knows these guys better than anyone else. He's the one who recommended Joe judge to the Giants to get the head coaching job. You know, he's the one who will probably give a glowing recommendation to the Ford family for map Patricia. You know, that's how that works, right? Like his word goes a long way in NFL circles. And now these guys are coming back to him. And I think when you look at the impact of Bill Belichick and his entire career, he's won super bowls, he's been able to take players who weren't even an athlete in that sport and convert them over and make him an NFL star, right? He used to be able to take, you know, guys put him in positions to succeed who didn't work elsewhere. Well, now he's taking the coaches who are largely looked at it as and how special teams or head coaches didn't work out or defensive coordinator and the head coach that didn't work out. And he's able to take the offensive side of the ball and then we'll see what they come from there. So it's going to be kind of interesting to see what this evolves into. And I'm not counting them out in any way. I just feel like the way he's handled with the media's crappy and I don't care what his past track record was. Because he had that the ability with Tom Brady and the super bowls and everything they were winning to kind of do and say whatever he wanted. But this is like a legitimate question. And it's the first time where I think when you look into their future, they're not favored in the AFC. No. Not only were you not favorite in your own division, but you probably won't be there's a chance they're not going to be a playoff team. And it's like, I don't know that he might have built up the equity because of his success and his career to act how he wants. But the problem is like down the stretch if things don't go well. Like this is how you're going to be remembered as a guy who could win without Tom Brady and then treated the treated the media crappy. I don't know if that's really the way you want to go out if you're Bill Belichick's been on how much longer he wants to do this. I think it's up to him, how he wants to handle things that I think he's clearly showing that that's not on his radar. I don't think he cares about that too much. I think he just, he's mindful of what he wants to get accomplished. I don't think that those things matter to him. I'm just telling you, I'm just telling you how this whole thing's going to go in the end. Because you know how the media works. Things don't go well. They do. They'll take that thing out and they will hammer you with it. And that's where and it'll be justified. And it'll be interesting to see, does he become a sympathetic figure? If this does continue to not be what it was when he had Tom Brady. Think of Brady wins one again with Todd Bowles. You know, then you look at and you just go, I mean, he's a coach maker. Right. Like, that's not even, I mean, I think people right now would say, all right, Brady or Belichick, most surprised side with Brady. If he wins another one with bulls and granted, it's still the same team, but you'd have to say like, okay, I think it's pretty definitive. It's Brady. Like he could have just won anywhere and won him. And most people probably feel that way or think that, but I don't know, maybe there's some die hard New England Patriots fans like, no, man, Belichick's, you know, it's the common, okay. All right. What do you mean you got in laws who talk like that about the Patriots? What you're saying? No, no. I was thinking that, you know, maybe there's not a die hard patriots fans in south or something. They don't want to give them any give Tom Brady any credit because he left. Plus one 60 to make the playoffs according to DraftKings or the Patriots -200 did not make the playoffs. Let's play a quick game. So we're obviously picking the bills and when the division, right? Yep. Okay. So now you look at the rest of the division. Are you picking the Patriots over the dolphins? Can we get some Brady Quinn game? Show music here, please. We need some Brady quin game show. Well, what does that even anymore? After the whole 23andMe and that's a good point. It could be for Italian because now we play that music it's not even accurate. Yeah, The Godfather soundtrack mixed with the departed. It's very all right. Listen, we're just going to go with it. All right. This applies. All right. It's not accurate anymore. But we'll go with it. To finish second in the division, I would say, yeah, probably Miami after buffalo, I would say. I would say it's a tie, but here's the thing. If you go through the rest of the divisions in the AFC, I mean, look, I'll say Kansas City, Denver, chargers, raiders. I would say all four of those teams. Obviously, one's going to win the division. But I might like the other three, whoever isn't the division winner, to have as good if not a better chance to get into the playoffs. So throw up the entire AFC west, the AFC north I'll take Baltimore's division winner and sits in natty, I'd like to say, has a better shot. I think that's fair to say, but we'll see if they can go two years in a row. AFC south, I don't think is much competition. So you basically have, let's say, one of the AFC north, three in the AFC west, so that's four teams here in competition with the one in your own divisions. That's 5 that are biding for those playoff spots, which you got three after the division winners. So I don't know if the Patriots find themselves in that spot or not. Well, if you just stacked it, if you just made the question, who are you most optimistic in the AFC going into this season? You're getting past 7 before you get to the Patriots because you're more optimistic about every team in the AFC west. I'm more optimistic about Indianapolis than I am New England, and then I'll take at least three of the teams. I'll take Baltimore and Cincinnati in the north, and yeah, buffalo and probably Miami. You're getting to the point to where in their own conference they're looking at about tenth. Maybe tenth and that's just not a playoff team. And so then the conversation becomes and the conversation to your point turns into, okay, well now Brady's doing this. Belichick scrambling and he's got Joe judge Matt Patricia. He's got dueling banjo offensive coordinators or whatever the hell is going on there at Foxborough and Mac Jones is in year two and they just feel kind of lost. Within the game show. Yeah. For $200. Okay. Does this finally warm up Bill Belichick's seat? 'cause I said last year, so you still

It's always the main event on this show. So we will get to that here as we take you into a long weekend football and otherwise here on FSR. All right, so we've been talking about the situation in New England a little bit, how they are trying to figure out their play calling scenario. You've got Matt Patricia. You got Joe judge. You got Bill Belichick and everybody's trying to you're hearing these reports that come out of camp that's dysfunction and a little bit confusing. Albert breer spoke about it a little bit yesterday. So the Patriots had a preseason game last night against the New York Giants. The Patriots lost that preseason game to the Giants. 23 21 was final. And afterwards, Bill Belichick spoke with the media about the play calling situation there at Foxborough and this is how it went down. Do you know if one will call plays when the regular season arrives? Yeah, well, don't worry about that. We'll work it out. So have you decided? We're going through a process. Just like everything else on this team. Just really quickly just to follow up if I could. You mentioned earlier. With the offensive play call, you're going through a process. What do you need to see to make a final decision? Simple as that. Okay. It's just a little bit of an unusual situation for us that have watched you guys before. So you want me to do? I guess we're just looking for a little clarity as to why we're seeing what we're seeing. Don't throw a process. Okay. Trust the process. Can I side with the media here? It's not a difficult question. It's really not. And I think he's complicated this and maybe he's frustrated with where they're at or how the process is going. But that's not Bill Belichick. He made this decision. He could have went outside of their typical tree to bring in a play caller. You know, he could have elevated someone else. But instead, now he's got map Patricia calling some of the game and Joe judge calling some of the game, at least reportedly. We don't really know. And I don't know that the fact that we don't really know is going to matter one way or another. I really don't. I mean, I think the most concerning thing for me is and I said this before is whether or not map Patricia or Joe judge figures out how to call plays. Calling plays is very, very different. When you actually get into live game scenario, you're going up against an opponent, you're making in game adjustments. You have injuries. You have all these things going on. Very different. It's like, for those people who go out there and play poker, you can know. You can study poker. You can know what to do once you, before you sit down at that table at any given scenario. But then once you sit down and once you have that stack of chips next to you, or lack thereof, and understanding how to play when you're down or when you're up. And now understanding how to bluff and understanding the different cues and things you have to look for from the people at that table. It's a whole entirely different deal. And so you could sound as smart as you want in a film room is on the field and everything else. But until you actually have to go call plays, it's a different deal. So I don't think it's a tough question for him to have to ask. Her answer to. And I don't know why he just can't give any sort of response to the media because it's a fair question. So I feel for the folks in that room because look, there's a lot of good journalists out there who are just trying to do their job. And there's no reason he shouldn't be able to answer that question. We'll provide a little more insight on what that process is. It ultimately how he will have to determine because just because they found a loophole in how they can go about having their play call or not have to have weekly meetings or allow map Patricia to make more money because he was canned in Detroit. That doesn't mean that the media has to suffer because of it. And it's not going to provide their opponents any additional insight into anything. So I saw it with the media here on this one. I feel like that's a pretty crappy way for a guy who's got one of the all time greatest careers as a head coach without the greatest to not be able to be at this point in time in his career, you know, cordial enough to answer a few questions about it. I think the positive here is that we started to think that Bill Belichick would actually be more open and more accommodating to the media. I mean, the way he spoke on Mac Jones and the way he was speaking on cam, Newton, when he was there, it was like, wow, wait, hold on. Bill Belichick doesn't say things like that. In the media, Bill Belichick is the best of the interviews. I would say if I'm the media, I would feel good about the possibilities of this being a good season because Bill Belichick is being vintage Bill Belichick. He's always been difficult with the media. He's always been difficult with his answers. He's always been what would be considered to be smug and kind of dismissive. I mean, that's always been his MO. Very quirky type of personality traits. Seems very uncomfortable. And having to address the media and talk to them. If I'm a reporter, I'm sitting there and it's more about how Bill reacts and handles questions than it is, him even answering the question itself. And that's just what he's created. And whether it sucks or whether it's great or not, I don't know, but I know that that's who he has been to the media, at least since we paid attention to him. And being in New England, that's how he's always been. So I don't know. I mean, it would be nice to know a little bit more detail to it, but I mean, that's

And figure out what deshaun Watson's punishment and his ultimate punishment is going to be. So we will wait to hear the final conclusion on that. Because regardless, it does kind of appear like a little bit of a bad look if all of a sudden deshaun Watson takes the field. And levar, you pointed this out. When we're talking about using terms like predatory and egregious, but let them take the field in Jacksonville on a Friday night and play a preseason game. The excuse of it's just a preseason game. I don't buy it, dude. It's still a football game. He's still representing the league. And I just think it's a pretty bad look, not only for the browns, but for deshaun Watson and the NFL of these out there. Well, I'll say this. And you just mentioned it when mentioning the fact that you use words, especially the word is strong as predatorial, predatorial behavior. But we're just going to let you keep practicing. We're going to let you go ahead and participate in the preseason games. I just don't. It's confusing to me. At best, it's confusing because I almost feel like you should have deshaun Watson on ice, so to speak until you figured out what you're going to do punishment wise. Now, I know that that isn't how it's handled in the rules state otherwise. But Jonas, in this situation, don't you think that sometimes exceptions are sometimes necessary. Hundred percent. I think it would have been more than necessary and more than justified to have that type of approach to this scenario. Yeah. The whole thing is very bizarre. And when you just take a look back at some of the moves, the browns have made this off season. There's also this other rumor that is now popped up. Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland, the Cleveland plain dealer who's been covering the browns for a long time. And she's obviously been all over this situation and covering every single angle, what it could mean, what a lengthy suspension could mean for the browns and where they stand on all that. She pointed out yesterday that if this suspension is extended for a significant amount of time and we obviously talked about how deshaun Watson and them came back to the NFL and said, well, we'd be willing to accept 8 games and $5 million fine. That leads me to believe that the NFL and the rumor of the 12 game $10 million fine and the number that's been thrown out there does feel right in line with what their counteroffer would be. So when you see the report from Mary Kay Cabot and she says that if this suspension is extended and he's going to miss even more games that they would look into trading for Jimmy Garoppolo, this is going to in the end look like one of the worst off season moves in one of the worst decisions of franchise is made. If he misses 12 games or the entire year and you went from Baker Mayfield who not that long ago, guided you to a playoff win and then you move off of him the way you handled it towards the end was awful and then you have to pay somebody in essence to take his contract. You bring in Jacoby Brissette and then he's not the answer and then the guy you gave $230 million guaranteed to. He's not the answer because he can't be because he's not allowed to play. And now you're going to have to give up more capital just to bring in Jimmy Garoppolo, just to have some sort of an answer. This whole

Three Broncos One Step Closer to Getting Their Hall of Fame Due
"Andrew mason and Denver fan dot com saying writing about the three deserving Broncos being one step closer to getting their Hall of Fame do. Yes, as the semifinalists for the seniors and contributors coaches part of the Hall of Fame class for 2023 was announced that semifinalists and among them, Mike Shanahan, Randy gradishar and Dan Reeves. Mike Shanahan is an absolute no brainer. What do you think will go down as his Hall of Fame legacy? What he did as coach of the Broncos or his impact on what the current NFL looks like, whether it's the way that the game is played offensively, or just his coaching tree. I mean, everybody talks about the coaching trees of these great coaches, how Bill Belichick's coaching tree is lousy. By sharing his coaching tree is phenomenal. Yeah, it's robust. It bears fruit. Whereas Bill Belichick's tree is just kind of, I don't know, it's just like, it's just the weather and old, I don't know, what kind of tree doesn't bear fruit. Most trees. But no, Mike Shannon got the hardware. You know what I mean? And so that back to back Super Bowl championships. Those are going to be his kind of what he hangs his hat on. But when you look deeper, you realize that it was a philosophy and he was a teacher. He was a teacher. He empowered young coaches and almost seems like Belichick creates a system where he hopes they fail when they go out there. Right. He does not want him to succeed right there and surpass what he's

New England Patriots Press Pass
"bill belichick" Discussed on New England Patriots Press Pass
"Morning around 7 30 a.m. patriots head coach Bill Belichick held court at the owners meetings down in West Palm Beach for a small group of reporters down there in Florida taking in the owner's meetings at the breakers hotel. Belichick spoke for about 30 minutes. It was a long press conference. He answered a bunch of different questions from the Patriots lack of urgency and free agency to the coaching staff to who would be calling offensive plays. Pat's head coach didn't say a time, but he didn't say nothing about all those things. Starting with the free agency or lack thereof for the Patriots, this off season Belichick pointed to the 2021 free agency hall that the Patriots had and the amount of money and investment they had and that group of players last off season in the Pats are hoping for a year or two leap from a lot of those players, mostly Johnny Smith who is going to be a part of the Patriots off season program according to reports as well as hunter Henry and Nelson Aguilar, Kendrick Bourne Matthew judon and Jalen mills on the defensive side of the ball. Those players are getting a second chance if you will for some of them and a potential to really take what they did in year one and build off of that in year two, along with the Patriots draft class from last off season, Mac Jones, Christian barmore, from Andre Stevenson, and of course another rookie class coming in from 2022. The Patriots are hoping to build from within and have an optimistic view on the fact that they can really internally improve rather than looking for external additions and free agency. Now, Belichick did say that the Pats off season spending spree a year ago did seem to have an impact on what they were doing this off season in 2022 instead of real in terms of real cash spending and just total spending as an organization. They went balls to the wall last year. They slowed it down this year. That was the plan for the Patriots according to the head coach as far as the coaching staff goes, Belichick spoke about a collaborative effort on the offensive side of the ball as it pertains to coaching Mac Jones and just the offense as a whole, pointing to Matt Patricia and Joe judge coaching offense this season for the Patriots and coaching quarterback Mac Jones, along with Belichick himself going to be in the mix there, coaching the quarterbacks, coaching the offense, Belichick wouldn't go and name an offensive play caller saying that it's gonna be a while until the Patriots have to call any offensive plays. So still mom's the word on who's officially gonna be the play caller with the play sheet for the Patriots offense next season. But Belichick has now confirmed reports out there that Patricia is going to coach offense. We knew judge was brought back as an offensive assistant and Belichick himself will be hands on with the offense as well, along with Troy Brown and Nick Caylee being the only holdovers from Josh McDaniels staff helping out for the Patriots on that side of the football too. Belichick didn't sound concerned about the Patriots coaching on offense, thought that they really had a good enough group of coaches of talented coaches from judge to Patricia to former head coaches to some young guns and Kayleigh and Troy Brown. The pat's head coach didn't really seem phased by the fact that the Patriots didn't have a title, an offensive coordinator or defensive coordinator, saying he's not a big fan of titles and the Patriots won't have either officially named for the 2022 season as I mentioned Mac Jones himself getting coached up by Belichick himself and Patricia and judge. That's going to be the approach moving forward for the Patriots on offense. The Pats also doing their work at home while Belichick map Patricia Matt grow and Robert Kraft have been down at the owners meetings in Florida. The Patriots hosting safety jabril peppers on a free agent visit up here at Gillette stadium. Now, peppers, the 2017 first round pick has that versatility that the Patriots absolutely covet. Somebody at the University of Michigan that played an all three phases for the Wolverine, some running back, some returner and kick and punt returns, as well as defense where he really stood out for Michigan and has played predominantly in the NFL for the browns and the Giants. Peppers plays that hybrid safety role can play some over the slot can play in the box down closer to the line of scrimmage and be an impact player when healthy. He dealt with injuries last year, only played a handful of games, but when he's been out there in the NFL, he's played at a productive level, along with his ability to play on defense, peppers also is another name the Patriots could throw in the hat to replace Gunnar ozeki as their primary return man. Now obviously O chefs do you go into the Pittsburgh Steelers in free agency left a void at punt and kick off returner, the Patriots looking for options to fill that potential void could be a guy like jabril peppers could have some other internal options as well but the Patriots hosting the safety on a free agent visit and the Pats could use another player like him in that secondary. So we will keep you updated right here with all the happenings at the owners meetings down in West Palm Beach. You can check out right here on patriots press pass. Bill Belichick's full 30 minute press conference this morning with reporters and we will keep you updated as always on jabril peppers and any other potential patriots freed and signings right here.

Brian Flores Files Discrimination Lawsuit Against NFL
"Most interesting story of the afternoon was Brian Flores. Late last afternoon on the West Coast. It's early evening on the east coast. I'm starting to do my show prep, and I see Brian Flores, who was head coach of the Miami Dolphins for a couple of years, has just unloaded on the NFL. Alleging discrimination against black coaches. And he shot at the NFL and his complaint, and he hit it, but he really took out Bill Belichick. Because Bill Belichick thought he was texting somebody other than Brian Flores. And he was texting, I think Brian did all telling him. Hey, the fix is in. Don't worry, there's the paraphrase I don't have in front of me. Don't worry, Brian, you've got this job, you're gonna get this job. They told me you've got the job. Good for you. You're gonna do great with a giant Brian Florence was in the about to head off to interview at New York Giants land. He had to go through a charade because of the Rooney rule. The Rooney rule requires that you hire at least one African American. You interview at least one African American for every opening for GM and head coach. I think that's the Rooney rule. Now the browns have actually lived by the Rooney rule. They had Hugh Jackson as their head coach. They got the amazing Andrew Barry, who's maybe the best GM in football, both black men who are great professionals. You didn't do so well. But but you can't pretend. And I think Brian Flores, we've got to payday

Brian Flores says his Giants interview was for show to satisfy 'Rooney Rule'
"Bill Belichick, the coach of the New England Patriots, mistakenly text this guy, Brian Flores, congratulating him on getting the hit coach job for the New York Giants. The problem is, he didn't get the head coach job for the New York giant. There's another guy named Brian. So he takes the wrong guy, and by the way, it was three days before this Brian interviewed for position with the New York Giants. Apparently, complying with the Rooney rule, meaning they'd already decided who they wanted to hire. They already were going to hire another guy named Brian. Brian Belichick didn't Bill Belichick didn't know that. Congratulated this guy for getting the job. Three days before he applied for the job, interviewed for the job, which apparently had already been given to somebody else. Now, in the lawsuit, he says, I'm standing up against systemic racism in the NFL. Says this, the league is rife with systemic racism and it is akin to being run, he says, like a plantation. The Colin Kaepernick draft the skies complaint.

"I don't want to watch games every single week that are 500 passing yards. Why would you want that? That's insane to me. It's insane to me that you wouldn't watch what the offensive line and the rest of the team did blocking last night. It's insane to me that you wouldn't see what Adrian Phillips and JC Jackson were doing last night. It's insane to me that you would watch that and not enjoy it as a football fan. And speaking of someone who obviously did not enjoy football on Monday night. Shall we? Sean McDermott had a few things to say in response to Belichick running the ball down his throat all game. I'm going to read you as direct quotes. I got this from Ness and dot com. So he was asked about the game plan and all that stuff. And this is what he said. Let's not give more credit than we need to give credit to Bill Belichick on this one. Whether it was Bill or anybody else, they beat us, right? But you sit here and you tell me when we start with an average starting field position of the 40 yard line and he starts with the 23 yard line. I'm rounding up in both cases and we were one for four in the red zone and they were over one in the red zone. You give me that ahead of time, I'd say I like my chances. I like my chances. I don't think with all due respect, it's not a Bill Belichick type thing. It's what are you going to do with the opportunities you got? We turn the ball over on the plus 30 something yard line, sloppy football. I'm very comfortable in that situation. So before I get into my own breakdown of what that really means, I have to give at coach vast props for this. He said it better than I ever could. Don't give the other head coach too much credit, says the guy who got jumbo G lead shoved up his ass for four quarters. Well said, let's elaborate. You can turn to the analytics all you want after a game analytics aren't for after the game. Therefore, before it, dude, you had all those chances in the red zone and you didn't score. Once again, you're going up against a team who regularly does that. They regularly let you get into the red zone and then stop you from scoring. This is a defense that has historically done that. So I don't know why you like your chances, but let's move on. Are you not aware that there's a defense on the other side of the ball? Are you not aware of that? The other team wasn't getting in the red zone because they didn't need to. They just needed to run the ball long enough and far enough to get Nick folk to kick the field goal and keep your team from being able to get out there and fail the pass. That's all they needed to do. So don't do analytics ball placement bullshit after the game when the reality is your game plan sucked. Everybody on the planet knows that running the ball and maintaining possession when you have a lead is the best way to keep the fucking lead..

"Was probably the reason that team was able to make it to the playoffs with a rookie QB, even a rookie QB who turned out to be Russell Wilson. I also heard some criticism that 14 points isn't good enough. It's not good enough. You can't be the time of team that can only score 14 points and then say that you're a Super Bowl contender. Well, let's take a look at that. Since 2000, there were 27 games in which a team that went on to play in that year's Super Bowl, won a game scoring 14 points or less. Unsurprisingly, that includes the 2013 and 2014 Seahawks unsurprisingly that includes the 2012 Baltimore Ravens unsurprisingly that includes the 2008 Pittsburgh Steelers who did it three times that season. Unsurprisingly, that also includes the 2001, 2003 and 2004 New England Patriots. So you see where I'm getting with this, right? This is not an indictment on Mac Jones. This is not a sign that Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels think he's a trash passer who can't be trusted. This is two coaches who understand that there are going to be games they have to win without their rookie quarterback because rookie quarterbacks are uniquely unqualified to lead their team to wins under certain circumstances, which is why you build a team around them. They are getting better every single week. But rookie quarterbacks do not lead their team to play off wins or super bowls as the strength of their team. It doesn't happen. So you can think whatever you want to think about what happened with Mac Jones. He doesn't have the arm that Josh Allen has. By the way, Josh Allen wasn't this version of Josh Allen when he was a rookie. He could sling the ball, but he wasn't this Josh Allen. And Matt Jones is not a power thrower. He does not a gunslinger. That is not what he does. Especially not as a rookie. He will become a better passer, a stronger, more accurate passer. He will become all of those things down the line. If that is what he's meant to become, but it's not in your rookie season. It never is. Now you can tell me all about dak Prescott, but what happened to dak Prescott when he got to the playoffs? He's impressive athlete, dak Prost got again a huge arm, incredible athlete, a different type of player than Mac Jones, on a different type of team than Mac Jones. That didn't win a playoff game. If rookie dak Prescott.

"I mean at times wasn't super impressed with Bill Belichick, not in the ways that we were. She says, dude, everyone is bending over backwards to praise Bill Belichick today. Noting his obvious in season long conservative handling of his rookie QB is not an indictment of Mac Jones. Y'all are sensitive as hell, which I agree. And I don't, I'm not worried about it being an indictment of Mac Jones. She says, I thought New England was too conservative with how they handled Jones earlier in the season. And people would be making that point today if the bills had scored on one of the two times they made it into the red zone in the fourth quarter. Again, they didn't score on one of the two times that they made it into the red zone in the fourth quarter because they went up against Bill Belichick's elite defense. They leave defense that he's built all season long to stand up to teams like this in situations like this to stop them from scoring. This is a defense that's always been an excellent scoring defense. This is what they do. This isn't even new to this year. Doing that if they had scored things would be different. They did in score. And they didn't not score against a team that just got lucky a few defensive plays. We haven't seen this was a team going into the game that Sean McDermott and the bills knew was going to be difficult to score on. It's not a fluke. You don't get to do that. And in a less polite way, skip Bayless made his own accusations about Bill Belichick's maybe luck in this situation. Again, skip a colleague of mine at Fox Sports, but here's what he said. When I saw last night was an overrated Belichick getting real cute and getting away with it because Josh Allen is not that guy. So here's two people from two different ends of the NFL analyst spectrum both agreeing that this was overrating Belichick in this situation. So let's talk about exactly what got Bill Belichick to the point that he could comfortably only ask his rookie quarterback to throw three times in extreme wind and win a game. What we saw from Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels was exactly the reason they've been so.

"So what happens when you get a team that has that run threat or maybe not even that much of a run threat just somebody who happens to be able to take up the mantle that day and they can all they aren't missing their receivers? And they do have a more explosive passing offense. You have to have everything coming together. And I trust the linebackers at this point a little more than I trust the interior of the defensive line. I mean, I do think a linebacker core can get itself together. I mean, of course, Christian barmore, but he's still a kid. You know? So at the end of the day, the linebackers are veterans who the team is going to have to lean on. And I do think that because of the history of Bill Belichick and his ability to handle that unit with such effectiveness, I'm a little less worried than how that area of the defense of one is going to hold up against a team that has a passing and rushing threat. And now, luckily, there's not that many of them in the AFC right now. Because you look around and it's like, yeah, Lamar can run and pass, but at the end of day, that's one player. You know, as I was a little bit easier to deal with. It's just one of those years where I think the rest of the AFC is doing them a favor by not being the types of teams they have to worry about. In the past, this would have been a defense. I don't think this defense this year going against the chief's offense two years ago probably can't hang. Right. But, you know, we are in 2021. So you've soothed my fears somewhat, especially considering they will get hopefully get a healthier Christian bar more going forward. That kind of leads me into this team is again a classic Bill Belichick patriots team with a lot of guys doing their jobs, which isn't always flashy. Is always sparkly. We're not always talking about it..

"About the running game, because that's also week to week sort of continue to was they didn't have their best week against the Titans, but prior to that was really just ramping up week to week and so that is a great point. Moving to the other side of the ball. The patrons defense is outstanding. I said earlier on a podcast with my friend Jarrett, I said, you know, the big thing, the other thing that I, the caveat, I always put with getting to the playoffs with a rookie quarterback is you have to have an elite defense. And I think I'm almost positive I talked about it on locked on as well. We did. One, two, three. The top of the league elite. And then that defense has to be elite sort of in comparison to defenses over the few years, right? They just have to be really good. Jets, steelers, we talked about it. Didn't see that coming with this unit. I knew they were going to have a good defense. The Patriots always have a good defense. Even when they don't have a good defense on paper, they have a good defense. You know, whether they are just, they're doing the let everybody get as many yards as they want between the 20s and stopping them in the red zone, whatever they're doing, they are always a good, solid unit by the end of the year. Didn't see them being maybe the best defense in the league at this point. They are. However, since we are trying to actually see how the rest of the season can play out and what their chances really are in the playoffs, I want to know about maybe their weaknesses. Do you have any concerns at this point about the Patriots run defense in their interior of that defensive line that's been struggling a little bit to stop the run? Well, giving up 270 yards on the ground to a team that was missing its top rusher and Derrick Henry on Sunday is a little bit of a clause for concern. I mean, anybody would be. You look at what the Patriots had done even previously in the last couple of games. And they really started to shore that run defense up and they started to be able to clog the middle a little bit that interior of the defensive line was starting to work a little bit more as a cohesive unit. Sunday was a little bit of an anomaly. And there are a couple of reasons for that. One, it was schemed very well by Mike vrabel, the Tennessee coaching staff. They are designed to run the ball. Even without Derek Henry, they knew that guys like Don trail Hilliard and Dante form and could get the ball the way they needed to and be able to make and break for certain runs. So Tennessee did a great job of scheming and they knew the type of defense and the type of scheme that Bill Belichick and his coaching staff was going to throw at them..

"Bran embolden that really gave the Panthers a ton of trouble on Sunday. Harris to the end zone for the touchdown for the 5th straight game. Damien Harris carries the ball into the end zone for a touchdown. His 7th rushing touchdown of the year. They have enough pieces on offense. It's as if they're just letting Mac Jones figure things out. And as he grows, they have the benefit of a strong running game and a great defense to prop him up. Mack Jones is probably been the best QB in this year's rookie class. How are you seeing him evolve over the course of the season? Early in the year, you weren't seeing him push the ball downfield a lot. He didn't have a lot of throws ten plus yards in the air. It was a lot of dink and dunk. As the season's gone on, he's pushing the ball downfield and he's getting a little bit more aggressive. He wasn't that way against the Panthers on Sunday, but he certainly getting more comfortable with the whole offense. And being able to trust players to make plays down the field, trust his protection, stand in the pocket. He's making mistakes, but he's not letting those mistakes ruin his day. Yeah, there's a lot of things. I'm gonna improve on and I'm trying to work on him during practice and I've always tried to just look up to the older guys and see how they do it. And see how they get better every day and a lot of them. He's just extremely accurate. Makes quick decisions. He's everything the Patriots were looking for in a quarterback. Now it's a matter of having guys make plays around him and trusting him to do more when they need him to. When they were two and four, the paths were insisting that they were better than their record indicated. Were they actually clicking earlier in the season? Or have they been improving as the season goes on? As they've gotten used to their system of play. Yeah, and in typical Bill Belichick fashion this team has gotten better as the year has gone on. There's no doubt about that. It almost feels like they're still not clicking in some ways. You know, they were playing pretty well early in the season, but it was silly mistakes that were costing them. I mean, they lost to the dolphins in week one, Damien Harris fumbled near the goal line. They were a missed field goal away from beating the Buccaneers. They lost to the cowboys in overtime. So the signs were there that two and four wasn't who they were, but I think what was important was that while they had some players saying, look, we're better than this record. They also had leaders in the locker room that said, that's our record. So we're not better than that until we go out and start doing those little things that will turn those close losses into wins. And they've done more of that. And how would you characterize the team's mood at this moment? They're confident. A lot of that starts on defense. A lot of the personality of this team comes out on the defensive side of the ball, guys like Dante Hightower, Jamie Collins, who they added at the start of the season. Christian bar more their rookie defensive lineman that they drafted in the second round, he's been extremely effective up front. We won't go on those, you got to come up with the pressure. I'm saying, so you're gonna have to have a hard time. You ain't gonna give you the 6, no easy, so we will come up with the whole best defense show y'all. So you know what I'm saying? You're seeing a little bit of that swagger come out of this defense and you know, I think the offensive side of the ball is really starting to believe in one another. They love Mac Jones. They love playing forum out even keeled he is. And I think that might be the best way to describe the mood of this team is even keeled. They're on a three game winning streak, and they're acting like they've been there before because a lot of players in that room have been there before. You and our colleagues rest in Dodd and Jason jenks interviewed a bunch of former patriots for the story. What did they tell you? I think the main thing I learned was that he has a real sense of time and kind of like he does with coaching. He has a sense of his team. He has a sense of the right time to crack a joke and a lot of times it's self deprecating. A lot of times it's poking fun at a certain player. A lot of this stuff feels like it's funny in part because it comes from Bill Belichick, right? You know, he's one of the only ones that can get away with it. Can you tell us a couple of the stories they told you? Yeah, where should we start? You know, so back in 2012, it was the year JJ watt was swatting away a lot of passes, and it was like, all right, they needed to figure out a way to prepare for that. So Bill Belichick had the punter's old time mesko, go over and get in the defensive huddle with tennis rackets. And he just wanted him to S.W.A.T. Tom Brady's passes with tennis rackets. Bill Belichick was actually paying a $100 for every football that he successfully swatted with the tennis bracket. And Tom Brady was getting so angry about this. Stay in Fletcher said that he actually started offering a $150 to guys to not do it. And it didn't really work. They were having too much fun. They couldn't believe, I guess that they were able to use tennis rackets on a football field in a Bill Belichick practice. And the thing everybody said was Bill Belichick paid up. He had the cash ready to go after practice. It was not just, you know, a gimmick. It was not empty words. He was bringing the money. The next story is a little gross, but can you tell us about the special teams.

The Lead
"bill belichick" Discussed on The Lead
"Three weeks ago, the New England Patriots were two and four and a lot of people had written them off. But now, the paths are on a roll. Intercepted. Touchdown New England. So when I look at it, I'm saying, I can't sleep on New England. I think people are sleeping on the New England Patriots. Today, the athletics Matthew fairburn on how the Pats have put together a three game win streak. And why the balance of power in their division might be shifting. Plus why Bill Belichick is apparently a lot funnier than you might think. You need to have a thick skin to play for the guy, but he's willing to take it as much as he's willing to dish it. And the right types of guys can handle it. From wondering in the athletic, I'm Tiffany ocean Shinsuke. It's Tuesday, November 9th, and this is the lead. Well, hi Matthew, welcome back to the show. Oh, thanks so much for having me. I believe the last time you were on the lead, it was to talk about the Buffalo Bills. The team used to cover for the athletic. What's it been like to switch from covering the bills to covering the paths, especially in terms of fan reactions to your writing? There are certainly some differences, all right? I mean, Bill Belichick in the New England Patriots, they run a tight ship. It's not easy to get information out of these guys. And, you know, certainly the COVID restrictions that are still in place with press conference settings, no open locker room has been a bit of a challenge. I think some skeptical people in New England that, you know, somebody who covered the bills now is going to be covering the Patriots, but it has been interesting to transition into this era of New England Patriots football and cover this next chapter as they try to figure out who they are without Tom Brady. We're going to get into Bill Belichick being funny, but are his press conferences exactly what they seem where he's just super stoic and kind of deadpan? Or is there a little more to it that we just don't know about? There's actually more to it to be honest. Really? Wednesday's very much are what you've been told with the short answers. The running game with the 8 carries for the minus one. How much of a concern is that for you? Yeah. We've got to do better. It's obvious. And Fridays have been sort of this great time to get him to expand on things if you ask him the right question at the right time when he's in the right mood. He spoke for 8 minutes about long snappers. What? When I came into the league, there were no long snappers. But the specialist, the kickers and the punters were frequently positioned players. Well, I think he likes the zoom setting. It seems to me that he likes kind of having that distance and going on about what interests him. He really loves the history of the game. As time of all, you know, starting with Google ack and guys like that. They specialized in kicking and then you had some of the punters that specialized in punters. So players like Danny white and Tom topa and guys like but honestly, he's pretty expansive and thoughtful in the right setting and when he's asked the right question. So moving on, as we mentioned, the Pats have won three in a row in our now 5 and four. It's actually the first time they've been above 500 since week three of the 2020 season. And Matthew, we wanted to pick your brain about what's been going right for New England. So let's start with their 24 to 6 win over Carolina on Sunday. What stood out to you about their performance in that game? The defense. And throws it away. Sam darnold against Bill Belichick is just not a good matchup for Sam darnold. They ended up with three interceptions of darnold. They batted four of his passes at the line of scrimmage. They had 34 net yards of offense on those first 7 possessions. The line of scrim. The play that probably broke the game open for the Patriots defense was JC Jackson's pick 6. It was the first drive they had sustained during the entire game. And when they finally got the ball moving, JC Jackson, you know, jumped in with an interception returned it for a touchdown and broke the game wide open. Picked off and look out. This is Justin bethel can they catch him from behind. They will not touchdown. New England. They did what a Bill Belichick defense traditionally does against an inferior quarterback. And they feasted on him, frankly, and by the end of the game, Sam darnold was pretty helpless against that past defense. The Patriots de has been making a lot of great offenses and great quarterbacks. Look pretty ordinary this year. Maybe making them look like Sam darnold, including Justin Herbert and Tom Brady, what exactly are the paths doing defensively that has been so effective? I think the biggest thing is their pass rush, you know, Matthew judon has been dominant for them. He's up to 9 sacks this year. He's closing in on a career high. He's putting pressure on the quarterback. Christian bar more of their rookie defensive lineman that they drafted in the second round, he's been extremely effective up front. And they're doing different things. You know, they've traditionally been a man coverage team on defense. They're mixing in some zone coverage. They're trying to fool quarterbacks and make sure that when they go into a game, the quarterback isn't getting the same look he's expecting. It has been essentially Bill Belichick showing that he still has his fastball. He's devising these game plans. And he's the one who is still thinking two steps ahead of some of these quarterbacks. It was a long night for Tom Brady when he visited Foxborough a few weeks ago. The Patriots lost that game, but Bill Belichick showed that he could put together a game plan against the greatest quarterback of all time and one of the best offenses in football. They haven't been perfect, but more often than not, they're showing they have a defense that's going to keep the team in games. And they have the smartest defensive coach of all time, figuring out how to put all those pieces together. Well, on the other side of the ball, New England's offense hasn't exactly been a well oiled machine. But it seems like it's been good enough to win them some games. Is that fair to say? I would say so. I think this offense is what you would expect an offense with a rookie quarterback to look like. You know, Mac Jones came in as certainly a more polished prospect than most rookie quarterbacks. He's definitely a guy that came in ready to play. And it helps that they've started to get the offensive line together a little bit. Still on his feet and now inside the 15 or 25 rather to the 24. They had a lot of different combinations on the offensive line to start the year because of injuries. They had a COVID situation. Now they've had the same 5 N for about the last month and Mac Jones's protection has been better. They've been able to get the running game going as they did against the Panthers. How good did these running backs look? I mean, once again, it doesn't matter if it's you know Stevenson has had some really nice runs. Look at how many touches. They have a three man rotation in the backfield with Damien Harris from Andre Stevenson and.

"Bill belichick new cost a great quarterback developer. Don't you think he could've are now more on our those dude named seth were there under radi. That ain't right bill jackson. He helped develop michael jordan. Greatest of all time. Bill jackson also help develop kobe bryant one of the greatest of all time. So we saw phil jackson do it with this one. Then you saw phil jackson again do it with that one. I'm just don't you think we would have seen novella check at a minimum. Be able to do something with drew. Bledsoe on all i wanna say is i'll tell you. Go to flip that on his head as they say warm from flip that corn see the other side. Here's the problem. What you're saying one is comparison is the defense and i rob in one of these guys from their greatness. Tom brady's great. he's go bill bell checks to go. But you wanna do it. So let's do it. Let's have some fun. Let's flip that. Phil jackson michael jordan one over. Because if you flip it over you're gonna start to realize. Do you really want to take shots michael jordan. Because last time. I checked michael jordan do without phil jackson. Go get quiet on the set. I like that better. If we do that we go start. Robbing a lot of people ryan to without phil jackson going crowd of you know so so the thing is we doing it from player to coach perspective. And it's easy to take shots at coaches the most of us players because they made us run at the practice. But the thing is don't coaches. Can you wanna rob michael jordan. His great but he can do without feeling. Here's where we will get ball. Players are still perceived to be incredibly great individually without chips before k hatchets with the warriors we still perceived him as incredible player barry sanders not in totality became arena. Because you look at. Philip rivers versus. Don't level right in hall. He likes to be in the hall. Go higher go higher. What i'm saying is even without phil jackson jordan average thirty seven not he was still. We have perceived greatness individually. He wouldn't go have collective greatness. Oh bill now perceived as great without. Tom brady said it individually. Bella is still a great defensive mind now you got a pair. Sit down to pass it down for you michael jordan. If you wanna do that we can do that. Michael jordan would've still been an incredible scorer. One six chips doubtful. I even think based on watching the last dance jordan wouldn't have said he would radio one what i'll check for you got it before. Does it avella. You wouldn't even been in that position if you start off like he. Did you get a book and looking at the numbers. That i'd like to bring a numbers and we're gonna compare tom brady to michael jordan. I find it interesting. That in eight of the first ten years. When tom brady the league he had a passer rating. Double below one hundred. That's not anything that speaks being generational talent every position. That doesn't speak to being an old timer when it comes to be one of the best passers in the league. I would say that in the last half is to rear when he's consistently been over one hundred s because he's taken all of the knowledge all of those individual and team meetings bill belichick and he is learning how to play situation of football better than any other quarterback in history. It's because experience leaves the expertise. Which is where tom brady. Is now is experiencing. Expertise helped him the tampa bay buccaneers to another level. It wasn't his individuals. Dallas that experience and expertise was afforded by bill belichick who gave them opportunities and also gave him some nuggets. They helped him along. That pats bucky have posed this question for the to sell talk. I got some. I went to college at the university of texas. I had a phenomenal defensive coordinator. My first three years will muschamp. Must champ won national championships with nick. Sabin great things as a defense of mine will muschamp to help me get to the nfl. If we'll jump would not have been might even coordinator. I still would have got to the nfl because i would have found a way to get to the nfl. I've asked marcellus wiley. This question as well marcellus did not go to columbia. Marcella still would have got to the nfl because he would have found a way to get to the nfl. Because there is an innate intrinsic desire for greatness that certain individuals have. If tom brady does not pair up with bill belichick. Tom brady still would have been great. And barry likely still would have been be greatest of all time. It may not be seven super bowls to the next closest having four and might have been five to four. It might have been six to four. But tom brady. Barry likely still would've been the greatest of all time as much as well must champ has done for me along with college football hall of fame head coach mack brown. Who was my head coach. I still take ownership of the fact of. I was getting to the league regardless tom brady was getting to the throne regardless now. Bill belichick may have helped extend his throne. Accentuate the throne in which he sits. But i'm not going to take away. How great. Tom brady was and give any more credit to bill belichick. He's a brilliant defensive mind but he did not teach. Tom brady how to throw the football and he did not teach tom brady to work man. I love that. Ted talk felt good but boy kobe kobe when he got drafted to charlotte. Then he got traded to the lakers. It's as a sports is your thinking. He would stay short. He would have got five rings. Four rings three rings. Two rings any rings algebra. Kobe still would have been great. I do respect that my last point is this this with bookie said young. Tom brady. I played against tom brady. Didn't i retired. He still planned. This is insane but his first three super bowl wins. Eighty six ninety to ninety two list. Say who is that guy. Now that is eighty six rating in today's game. Nick mullets okay. Who the ninety two rating in. Today's game teddy bridgewater. Y'all better stop plan. Mobile check heat dressed up teddy bridgewater. Nick mones gave a defense. A special teams said go. Give me those rings. Three out of four. He's a goat. All coaches let's hand miami. Okay does it all right. Nah there reports say. The dolphins have interest in trained for the shower. Was't yesterday head coach ryan floors. Who i love. It is best to put those rumors to rest saying two of our quarterback in a team meeting. He said he was asked about it again today. And say no clear. I can be to is our quarterback otto wasser rumors be a distraction. Or yes but let's contextualize it right. If you play for. The dolphins does not like you're going in the weight room. I wonder if we're going to have shawn watson we're going to get some. It's not what it is on the football field. Do not even wondering. If you're going to get tucson watson but speaking from experience i think it can undermine your belief in your coach it can make you start to wonder like oh if coach line about this. What else you line about There were several trades. I think there came a time. Where our i've told you the story before we have sam bradford and we got we traded nick foles acquired sam. Bradford it was a year. Marcus mariota was coming out of college. Kelly are head coach coach. Marcus mariota oregon. Tim wanted marcus mariota. We knew damis was going number. One marietta was going number two likely to the titans so we were going to try to acquire. Sam bradford from everything. I heard trade him to the titans in order to get mariota and use mariota as a quarterback and the eagles sam bradford made no sense with the eagles. We knew that he couldn't run. This own reads game an acl injury. So we all knew that but in meetings chip continued to deny the reports that we wanted mariota. But we're reading the reports that we wanted mariota. Sam bradford was just a puzzle piece. It was a distraction now. It wasn't a distraction. Because i a second team linebacker at the time was constantly wondering like wonder if we're going to get marietta. It was a distraction. Because when i was on a football field and sam bradford was running his place to demarco murray again. I'm with the two. So i'm going up against the first team offense. I knew medicine be bradford. Come game day come. Game day is going to be mariota eh. Chip has it his way it's going to be bradford throwing that passed..

Of course is he a great coach. Statistically yes support so so for you pause right there. Say statistically don't know any other measurement for other then he wins all the time and you have not give him enough runway once. He finally got his bearings once he got him. Eighteen defense special teams quarterback that emerge into a goat. What's tom brady to even winning three championships. Four years not yet no. so that's called development. I do not like i despise when individuals like you are doing now are going to try to take some of the glory of tom. Brady and bill belichick. Whatever his development bill belichick is the greatest head coach when it comes to retaining amazing defenses. I will give him that. I think he has sixteen top ten defenses and tom. Brady's nineteen year tenure. Nobody has a greater head coach. When it comes to developing defenses and focusing on special teams not going to give bill belichick. All the praise develop doing all. I'm not do you want to give him the majority do that. I don't care who want to do equity shares with all. I wanna to say is. Don't you give tom brady something. You can't give bill belichick because it sounds like we could go. All day is talking about the of tom brady. But not talking about the go-to bill belichick so desktop offset. Tom brady is the because of accomplishment now because of accomplishment but all of a sudden no brady did debt. One nine nine do that by himself. He's already a done data as a coordinator because one nine thousand nine left bill belichick and did it again year wine with the team. That was seven and nine without tom. We can all agree on this. Yes we can all agree. Yes without tom brady. Bruce arians as phenomenal offensive. Mind without. Tom brady bruce. Arians is a very winning head coach. But with tom brady bruce arians super bowl head coach. If we can all agree on that. Why can't we go to bill. Belichick and apply the exact same thing without tom brady. Bill belichick phenomenal defensive. Mind without tom brady. Bill belichick have phenomenal hand on special teams but with tom brady bill. Belichick comes a super bowl winning coach. Oh my god so. Joe was able to take a little bit more of a strong hold on the grip of the patriots quarterback competition. He looked good in the start. Eight of nine hundred and three yards finish with one touchdowns. One on one touchdown no interceptions. He played three series before. Mac jones the rookie than took over jones first-round pick from alabama was also quite productive in this outing. Thirteen for nine thousand nine hundred forty six yards over four series. He had no touchdowns and no interceptions so all week long. We were talking about houses quarterback competition going to go in new england. Who's going to separate themselves. How are they gonna look now that they actually get to see some competition during the week in practice with those joints against philadelphia. I was reading earlier in the week. Just about how those practices went and that it was jalen hurts of all people who was standing apart of all the quarterbacks that we saw in philadelphia but now with cam newton and mack jones. This makes this one of the more interesting quarterback battles of the preseason because you have an incumbent in cam newton who was played a lot more seasons of professional football than his counterpart mack jones anecdote always feels like bill ballot checks to give him this final shot to prove himself and so far looks like he's off to a pretty good start.

Mac Jones Gaining Momentum as Eventual Patriots Starting QB
"Do you think about the pat- patriots quarterback battle. And do you think it's possible mack. Jones starts week one. Oh there's no question it's possible. I mean i think if he if he beats him out if he's clearly the better option and camp. Then that's bill belichick will do i. I don't think there's any doubt of it now. He's been saying cam newton starter since draft night When they when they took mack jones. But i think he you know obviously he wants to rookie to have to earn it. They put number fifty on him Mini camps so that that's a sign of that. But yeah i mean i think it's it's entirely possible and i think what you saw was cam newton. You know yeah. I think he's frustrated with the questions. I think he was coming off by. Most accounts was was kind of a tough practice for him And he probably. Here's the steps. I think you know everybody who's been around. Eighteen says that matt jones is closing gap so I'm it's likely the cam. Newton feels the same way and that's probably making him feel some pressure.

Cam Newton vs. Mac Jones: Where Patriots QB Competition Stands
"The other side. I it's a more interesting. Quarterback is a quarterback competition in new england. What is the sense. You get the dynamic between cam. Newton and mack jones. Yes quarterback competition. We can call it that cam. Newton is the starter plated limited amount of time against the washington football team. And then as you mentioned mack jones and it's very important not only to listen to what bill bella checks says but what he does and what he did was put back jones out there with the first team offensive line for a couple of plays at the end of his at the first half against the washington football team and then he had max jones run the two minute drill the no huddle offense and that he did with command and obviously precision and they were very impressed with that but right now what he wants to see what bill belichick wants to see and he said this the other day he to see the whole team but particularly the quarterback play faster react faster execute faster and what better way to do that than enjoying practices with the philadelphia eagles and then a preseason game on thursday night but yes there is a competition and we'll have to see how this goes in the next couple of weeks but my money is on cam. Newton starting the season and mack jones quickly getting up to speed and pushing cam newton for the starting job.

Is New England Patriots GM Bill Belichick in the hot seat?
"Bill belichick may be the most winningest coach in the nfl. But after the patriots finished last season with a losing record. While you know at the same time seeing mr tom brady capturing number seven with the buffs former. Nfl linebacker lavar. Arrington says he believes now must prove he can win without brady saying quote. That seat is warmer. Bill belichick in that might sound crazy for some people but bill. Belichick has to have a good season this year. And you know why because there are whispers. It was tom it was always. Tom couldn't have been anything else. But tom and bill belichick has to show before he gets too far away from tom. Brady leaving that. It was not tom brady that it was in fact and indeed. The system of bill belichick built in new

Robert Kraft Gives Honest Assessment of Patriots Drafting
"Heard from Robert Kraft yesterday was a man who was completely honest about where the the team is in a lot of different areas. I wouldn't will get into this but I don't think his quarterback comments were Something to really weigh in heavily on but I do think that overall I mean him talking about, you know, the draft specifically the personality just sound thrilled with having to Shell out as much money as he did and he basically admitted that the only reason they had to do that cuz they didn't draft well in recent years and and he committed what a lot of us have said where it's not sustainable to do that. You need the draft to be the lifeblood of your team so that you can do other things like you can't just every three years song ten free agents. It just it it's probably not going to happen be it's not economically feasible. And so I thought it was very refreshing for Robert to to talk to the assemblage yesterday and and really be honest and I think you know in judging from the comments at Boston Sports Journal com from my column off of this press conference wage. Think on a whole I thought the Patriots the Patriots fans reacted very well to it that are really like, okay. Well, at least now we know that the person in charge realizes is a isn't happy about it called last season horrible and B thinks that the team has made correction and is moving in the right direction. That's all anybody ever wanted to to hear from anybody at at one page place and they heard it from Craft and I think it made Patriot Nation breathe a little bit easier. Not that they weren't confident in Bill Belichick rebounding in any event, but I just think it reinforced that. All right. Well, we're still the Patriots thought we had a we had an off-year didn't go well we're going to correct things were going to get things back on track.

"Come back from 28 3. That the Patriots orchestrated where Brady to come back and ultimately win. That game went 22 for 28 with two touchdowns. Probably the biggest and best comeback that any of us will probably ever see. Amongst all of the accomplishments that I just laid out. MVPs. Pro Bowls, more touchdowns, more yards, Comeback player. Super Bowl victories. Would have to agree with Jim Nance. If this man wins Ah, seventh Super Bowl, You have to say that's his greatest achievement. His greatest accomplishment. He's doing it. On a new team. In his first year. At an advanced age of 43. Without Bill Belichick. Coming together during a pandemic. Trying to change. Trying to get acclimated to new players. A new system. That he's pretty much hoping to August rate. You want to tell me that that wouldn't be his greatest accomplishment. You know how difficult it is to jump into something brand new and you know he's not He's not coming out here to reinvent the wheel. He didn't go toe to Tampa Bay to Ah, you know, But come on, biologists didn't become a marine biologist. He's not doing any of that. He's still throwing a football. Yes. He's not solving and creating world peace. He's still throwing a football. But in his occupation For what he's done this year. Peaking close this chapter. This season and 2020 With a Super Bowl ring, his 7th and 2021. Everything. A long list of things. That Tom Brady has accomplished that he has achieved I would tell you. Winning the Super Bowl if he does I think that would top the cake. Can't find anything else that would show or indicate to me. That it would be more difficult. Not at all. So I'm gonna open the phone lines. 855 to 1 to four, CBS. That's 855 to 1 to four. CBS. Do you agree? What? Jim Nance. If Tom Brady goes out and wins this Super Bowl if he hoists 1/7 Vince Lombardi Trophy. Is this Tom Brady's greatest achievement? Is there something else that he's done? That is stand up that stands out more. Do you think there was another accomplishment that was more difficult? I think this is something for him to be proud of, probably more than anything else. Your phone calls when we come back 855 to 1 to.
