Bill Barnwell on NFL Undefeated Teams + Monday Preview

"Bill Barnwell. It is late Sunday night almost midnight, which means it's time for you to make me smarter about the NFL. I'm going to try my best Baba Bill. Barnwell is a senior writer for ESPN host of the Bill Barnwell show and he's procrastinating his deadline to talk to me. So we just watched the saints and the packers on Sunday night football and the saints lost without. Their Star Receiver Michael Thomas. But that did not stop us from getting a whole bunch of touchdowns drew brees and Aaron Rodgers. Each threw for three a piece. But in the end, the packers won the saints lost and they've now lost New Orleans says back to back games for the first time since two thousand, seventeen bill I know you are writing a new piece about drew brees coming off of the two year deal that drew brees signed in the offseason and what we've now seen from him through these first three weeks what did you see in Sunday night's games he regressing improving? What do we have with bruise right now? Okay. So public drew brees definitely improving this is a better performance from him. Me brees was downright bad on Monday night in week two against the raiders before we got to garbage time and breeze didn't do deep very frequently until this game was out of hand but I think the concerns i. have read or have heard about arm strength or how deep is passes typically go they don't really get how reason this offense actually worked. Breezes sort of like. A singles hitter in baseball like Tony Gwynn lagging time where a post player with no range in basketball he's not going to suddenly start throwing deeply. He's Patrick Mahomes at forty one years old breeze has succeeded. Over the last three years while throwing the shortest paths in the League because he's posted the three best single season completion. In NFL history. Now. The good news for the Saints Good News For Saints Fans is that brees was much more accurate on Sunday night it was twenty, nine, thirty, six for two, hundred, eighty, eight yards a lot of that West Alvin Kamara who did a lot of the work but still going to end up thirty six is still better than where brees was. The bad news was just about everything else. The Saints Lost Starters Jared Cook and Andres P to injuries while devante. Adams List Aaron Rodgers threw for two hundred, eighty, three yards and those three touchdowns you mentioned. The saints focused on adding veterans with nicknames Emmanuel Sanders and balcony. Jenkins this off season. But. Sanders hasn't been able to stand out with ankle Thomas Injured and Jenkins has been picked apart in pass coverage including Mercedes Lewis touchdown on Sunday night the attorney for more accurate breeze that was a bright spot. But if the saints continue to struggle with injuries and get disappointing play from their stars, the Orleans is going to need this version of free stick around to have a chance to compete in the NFC. So the packers emerged three no, and that's where a lot of focus the rest of our conversation here on the teams that are now undefeated through three weeks of the NFL season. So bill, let's push deeper into the NFC here because the Chicago Bears Be Chicago bears are somehow three you know and they do it by beating the Falcons thirty to twenty six Chicago was trailing by sixteen head coach. Matt Nagy Decides to pull quarterback Mitch Trubisky in favor of the veteran nick foles mister big bleep nick himself who goes on to throw three touchdown passes in the fourth quarter. So I have a two part question for you now. Why are the Falcons physically incapable of holding onto a fourth quarter lead and? Secondly, where does this leave the whole quarterback situation in Chicago? Let me answer the second part of that question I. The bears are going to flail by the seat of their pants for the rest of the season I would assume that nick foles is going to start until he struggles and the bears trailing by two touchdowns in the fourth quarter a couple weeks from now, I would point Mitch Trubisky will come in and lead them to victory and the cycle will start the new. Unfortunately I don't have one simple takeaway for our poor friends and Atlantic. Is Different From what we saw in week to as. Much. As the defense was disappointing in this game, the offense really deserves a fair chunk of the blame for what happened scored a touchdown on the opening drive third quarter, and then basically tried to sit on their lead, Matt Ryan and company REPA- total three first downs on their next six is before the bears took the lead back and the only scored one field goal over that time after bisky intercession back running back Brian L. dropped an easy third down conversion which would have put the Falcons and field goal range. Then on the next drive kicker, young coup miss a forty eight yard field goal attempt. I know. I mean let's be fair. The Falcons defense was very bad. I'm not sure the Falcons are gonNA make any drastic changes on Monday morning, but Arthur blank can feel great about seeing this happen. On his seventy eighth birthday and. I believe I'm not mistaken not the only person celebrating birthday on Sunday. Having Birthday Pamela. Day Pablo. Yeah this is a hard way to discover that you share a birthday with the owner of the Atlanta Falcons Bill, which feels like you just cast a pox upon my house.

How Will Cam Newton Make the Patriots Better?

"All right bill. We're here today to talk about the New England Patriots and Cam specifically began her. They used to film. The Cincinnati bengals sideline for which they were find over a million dollars mosque third round. Pick well the good news. Is that they've decided to uproot their entire organization and totally chance planet quarterback to bury the latest piece of evidence that there maybe not playing by the rules as everybody else. Bill Barnwell is the host of the podcast. The bill Barnwell show. You just, but there are people on the Internet positing that these events are connected. Of course. We are here today to talk about. The other came Cam Newton the New England. Patriots who could have predicted this? IS GOING TO RELEASE CAM to they're going to wait, and the Patriots are going to get him for nothing and they're going to be good. It's going to be awful in offense. It was impossible up to this point. The idea that the only team in the league that to starting quarterback might possibly make a move for the best available starting quarterback on the free agent market see Telepho-, obvious when you lay it out like that, but here's the thing it's June and according to our Adam Schefter. No other teams exception to the Browns who had some interest put in a call then New England goes out, and they get cam for basically nothing veteran minimum with incentives. How bill how? I think it's a combination of things I mean. Obviously the coronavirus has impacted team's ability to see workouts to administer physicals and Cam Newton of course as a player coming off of a serious injury, eight frank injury to the middle of his foot, which cost him pretty much. The entire two thousand nineteen season for that coming off the shoulder surgery has not been healthy in a while, and so you'd figure in a typical circumstance. He would be easy for teams to kind of see what cam has left, and then make an offer only, but there haven't really been teams able to make the sort of offers that would justify starting quarterback role. And then I think from camps perspective he rightfully would rather be making less money with the opportunity to start for the new, England Patriots say a playoff team from a year ago, then serve as a perhaps higher paid backup in a spot where he's unlikely to play. Knowing how little New England paid for him and looking back at some of the other quarterbacks who got jobs during free agency? Are there any teams that you think would have been wise to jump ahead of new? England and WHY IS IT CHICAGO? I do think that the decision to trade for Nick. Foles a player who realistically has if not Worse Injury History Than Cam Newton certainly a comparable injury history when it comes to his checkered past i. do think that the bears would have been in much better shape. Do Not trae draft pick and to sign Cam Newton for much less money than they're going to give nick foles over the next three years and I think there's a handful of teams that. That even if it happened as a backup, I think teams like the steelers. Of course you've talked about the titans as possible CAM, Newton location and I think absolutely teams like that have a veteran quarterback with a history of injuries and very little behind them in the backup role would have absolutely been smart to making move for Cam Newton, but obviously I think it's the Patriots benefit that the League has been so conservative when it's come to approach again. Let's talk about what we can expect out of canning. Which I realize, you are not a doctor, but the big question mark is you've outlined his health the last time we saw him play. Football was the beginning of the two thousand nineteen season. He only played a couple of games before his season ended due to a foot injury, he incurred during the preseason. What did you see out of Cam the last time he was healthy? The last extended stretch we saw from Cam Newton as a healthy quarterback, was the first half of twenty eighteen, and he was excellent. Newton throws. Fabio Capello Panthers one of the best teams in football at six to newton was tenth and Passer Rating Twelve Qbr and the panthers had guilty scheme that was designed to actually trying to out more quickly and leave some of the hits that candidate taking, and we saw his numbers include accordingly. SNAP TO NEWTON looking left throws it over the Middle Touchdown Greg Olsen. Cam Newton looking like a poster on feats. Assume. Thirty so frequently earlier in his career, they always posted pretty mediocre. Completion percentages in two thousand eighteen across the first half you had a completion percentage of sixty seven point three percent that was one of the best marks in football. He was averaging nearly four touchdowns for every pick producing really two hundred eighty yards per game from scrimmage. He was illegitimate MVP candidate through the first half of twenty eighteen. And then of course, the injuries struck. Labor rotator cuff just to soreness. He had a shoulder injury that led to surgery after two thousand eighteen. And then the foot injury cam stumbles Abu to the nearside. He's in trouble. Hit droplet like. Damn comes off the field limping a little bit maybe. But you tried to play through and was unable to do so.

Super Bowl Bound: 49ers and Chiefs

"Did bill. We made it to the Super Bowl. You me and Jimmy Garoppolo. I feel I I may have sweat more watching the NFC championship game. That Jimmy Garoppolo actually swept playing being in the NFC championship game. Bill Barnwell is a senior football writer at ESPN and the host of the bill. Barnwell show so after two weeks Of Extremely Exciting Football Championship weekend did not disappoint niners and chiefs fans disappointed pretty much everyone else or at least anyone who wanted close close games both favorites dominated so let's start with the most dominant team the San Francisco Forty niners bill win the niners packers met earlier earlier. This season. Aaron Rodgers had one of the worst games of his career threw for one hundred and four yards. Tonight he threw for three hundred twenty six yards But the result wasn't much better. Why is that okay? So the first time these two teams played the niners won with an absolutely dominant. Pash Josh Rush Nick. Bosa and his teammates knocked down Aaron Rodgers ten times on Sunday. The only knockdown Aaron Rogers twice and while they did hold them without a first down conversion in the first half both of those games the packers movable pretty consistently I should say after after halftime instead the forty niners otherworldly in a different way on Sunday they ran the ball forty two times for two hundred eighty five yards and four. We're touchdowns averaging nearly seven yards per carry to put that in context. ESPN has a stat called expected. Points with measures how each play impacts team's James Chances of scoring on a given the forty niners racked up the second most rushing. EPA for any team in a game this season and and the most for any single team in a playoff game over the last decade just narrowly beating out the prior record holder. which just happened to be the forty niners? Twenty wanting twelve playoff win over. The Green Bay Packers would Colin Kaepernick. Ran For one hundred. Eighty one rushing yards. So they're leading rusher tonight. I was not Colin Kaepernick. It was re Moster who ran for two hundred and twenty yards by himself. were good has hat trick the first half of the NFC championship game deserves a hat trick of field grade baby bill. Will I am guessing. A decent amount of football fans hadn't heard Ramos before tonight. Okay so you mustard is basically it accident accident in football terms but it's such a cool story so the Shanahan offense has a history of unearthing obscure running back and turning them into stars going back to Mike Shanahan stays in Denver but even among those backs most particularly remarkable case. Liners did everything they could to find a different running back over the past a couple of years. They hand picked a runner who they traded up to nab in the two thousand seventeen draft never played a game for the team. They signed Jerick McKinnon Torres. ACL He's collected more than and twenty one million dollars for the niners without ever playing a single game for the team. This offseason they added. Kevin Coleman from the Falcons who suffered an injury in the first half and that opened up the door from western and most of its story is easy to root for. You heard him talk about it. After the biggest game of his life on Sunday crazy that I've been on seven. Different teams actually still have cut dates every before every game a look at the dates when I got cut not everybody can can deal. Would that type of stressing the pain and agony I went through. I kept the faith to not only myself but whoever gave me the opportunity is organization has done a great job most are made the niners roster as a special teamer at first but after he looked good in limited time last season they gave him a three year extension after playing. Well this season most are just became the first running back. NFL history to top two hundred rushing yards and scored four rushing touchdowns in a single game. That's never happened in the playoffs playoffs before pretty good for a guy who was really an afterthought until the two thousand eighteen season. What's just remarkable? Bill is those two hundred twenty rushing yards. Were nearly three times as many yards as Garoppolo the night as quarterback past for which made for a remarkable stat sheet. There was a point in this football game where according to ESPN stats and Info. Jimmy went ninety four minutes in real time without attempting a pass so I have to ask going into the Super Bowl. Is that a sustainable offensive approach. I mean we all had that friend and in our twenties who got by succeeded solely because they were good looking right now that friend is Jimmy. Garoppolo I mean in the divisional round. He barely through through the football in the conference championship game. He barely through the football. We saw a similar situation with Ryan. Tannehill right over the first two weeks of his post. The season and when Tennessee ran into an offensive juggernaut with the chiefs their offense with Danny Hillis not able to accelerate into a higher gear. Now of course Garoppolo is the one who has to face the chiefs unless the forty niners can shut down the Kansas City. Passing game with their pass rush which isn't out of the question they're going to need to throw the football more quite a bit more. We've seen the niners succeed in games or Garoppolo and to throw the ball at ton with the Saints Win. Maybe as a notable for example but since Garoppolo through that interception against the Vikings in the divisional round cow Shanahan has called seventy one runs against just twelve passes passes even if the niners do end up throwing the ball effectively against the chiefs. It's clear that Shanahan doesn't WANNA put the game on Garoppolo shoulders unless absolutely necessary and that in itself is telling throughout the game bill packers fans were frustrated. Understand police and they seem to be taking out some of their wrath on the coaches arguing. They should have devised better game. Plans to both run the ball more and stop the run and do you think there's anything that Matt Leflore or the Packers Defensive Coordinator Mike Patton could have done differently in this game. Yeah I think so I think to be fair. Shanahan might just ask pedants number. It just felt like you is several steps ahead of the packers defensive coordinator and when pen and tried to adjust it just never seemed to catch up and work there. There was one play I think in the second quarter was a microcosm of everything that went wrong for the packers in this game. They came out in their nickle package with five defensive backs against the forty niners base. He's too back offense which created the size mismatch. The niners pitched the Baltimore and not only did he have a huge hole but he made both safeties with on their tackle attempts downfield win for about thirty yards. pedants struggled to put his players in positions where they could succeed and meanwhile leflore didn't coach like a guy who was a seven point underdog. The packers punted. I believe on their first drive on fourth and one from the fifty yard line. We know the packers are enormously more effective offense with Aaron Aaron Jones on the field but the floor still Jamal Williams their backup running back. Play over thirty percent of the offensive snaps and he didn't really take advantage of move the niners movement Richard Sherman. That was really fascinating during the regular season for the niners and during the vast majority of his time in Seattle Sherman signed up for almost every every snap asked the left cornerback. Defense playing against the right side of the offense. The niners started the game on Sunday. Which chairman on the opposite side of the field on the right side of the defense on the left side of the offense against devante items and while Sharon didn't travel to the left side very frequently? He did do it a few times during the first half. The second half Adams was able to be isolated Sherman over the top for a huge play downfield. I think that played about half of his snaps on either side of the field. I would have liked to have seen for trying to isolate him against German a little more often and take his chances with

NFL: Two head coaching hires in 10 minutes

"The draft before the combine. We still have several weeks. NFL Action to go. We have some new coaches join. Join the NFL. As recently as this afternoon and joining me to talk about that and the playoff games is our friend with the Atlantic Lindsay Jones Lindsay. How are you? I'm good oh how are you. I'm good I thought this was going to be kind of a quiet day in the NFL landscape and then suddenly to head. Coaching hires in the matter of ten minutes. This morning Matt rule going to the panthers. Joe Judge going to the giants after Mike McCarthy was named cowboys coach earlier this week. So let's start with today's news. Let's start with Matt rule who gets a seven year deal. What sixty seventy million dollars? A lot of money. Samat rule to leave Baylor and come work for the Carolina Panthers. Yeah I mean it sounded like one of those Offers you can't refuse type of situation where I think he's GonNa have a lot of power he's also got a lot of money and A lot of years to do To do what the panthers to do. It's not quite a Jon. GRUDEN ten years one hundred million dollar type of deal but David Tepper is showing that he is not afraid to spend a lot of money to invest very heavily in his head coach and head coach You know when everything else that they're doing I mean they're building a brand new practice facility. They're building the indoor facility. I mean they're spending a lot of money Darren Charlotte and you know I. It was interesting that there was kind of story that also came out. The rule wanted to kind of bring that offer back to the giants Because he was going to interview with the giants as well but The giants said okay. We're going to hire JOE judge instead of paying Instead of hiring not rule it six years seventy million dollars or whatever it is so Really really interesting. Move there Bell what are you. What was your initial? Take on it. I guess and then I'll I'll go with yours it. I think it's interesting in that. I'm not gonNA pretend that I am someone who has watched every Baylor game this year. I've watched a little bit and I've read up a Matt Rule Essay coaching candidate. Now for the past two years of course rule was very very nearly the jets head coach last year before jazz blocked him hiring his own offensive coordinator which point he stepped out of that process and they hired Adam Gates move. That has worked out brilliantly for the jets of course in the afterward with that rule. I think there are certainly elements of a a run first attack. I think he is not someone who is seen as a a progressive offensive minded. They've run EARNHARDT Peos this year. He has seen that as sort of a you know. I can't deal with the devil to run as much of the rushing game as he wants to and I think that's very interesting given what we have. In Carolina we have Christian McCaffrey who's entrenched is the best running back in football at the moment. We Have Cam Newton who I think you know certainly seems like this offer. This higher would probably be good for him in a way back for him in a way. Oh you know good in that. The run first attack does seem to favor can if he can be a player who does impact game with his leg. Still which we don't know coming back from injury but it's pretty clear that you know if Matt rule wants to move on from Cam Newton. He's going to have plenty of time to move on and higher higher or or or or sign up backup quarterback or assigned a young quarterback or draft a quarterback and give that guy a time to develop so I kind of feel of two minds. It's for this when it comes to the biggest decision for the second the second biggest decision the panthers have to make this office and I don't know how you feel about do you do. What does this mean for you for Cam Newton? Yeah I I think the first thing is just how healthy is he gonNA be. What's his time? Line going to be like their That's the thing that just is over everything and has been over everything for the panthers for going on two years now I still think he's GonNa be back and and I've been I've been thinking about this a lot over the last few few days I've been writing about brees and Brady and thinking about all of the potential quarterback moves that we're gonNA see the offseason and well this time of year. It's really fun fun to speculate about. All the potential moves and this year is more interesting than any quarterback off season that I can remember and maybe ever certainly certainly as long as my nfl institutional memory is But ultimately moving on from a quarterback and guy who's taking you to a super bowl who's won an MVP Without some sort of really solid plan in place is it's a really hard at it. It's so rare that it happens so ultimately I think he ends up being back. I think he's there's so many things that you can do with him if he's going to be healthy but that if he's going to be healthy is just the biggest question that's been out there and We're not going to know that for a couple abundance I guess the good news is that they don't have to make that move or decision on Cam Newton. Today I mean they they really can can wait a couple of months but ultimately. I think that there are better team with him. And the options outside of him are just not that great. I mean. There's some intriguing names out there but I just think I don't think you're GonNa do better than Cam. Newton Can A new. There's even seventy five percent of the quarterback that he was in two thousand fifteen when he was at his peak. Yeah or even the guy who was playing well in the first half of two thousand eighteen. I think that can traffic is still really good There's a definitely interesting sort of dichotomy with that rule or I guess not a paradox. In that he is a very conservative. Very first coach. But we've we've seen in the report effortless. Hire one of the reasons that the panthers were able to Land Matt run into the panthers was because they're making a huge investment in sports science. You mentioned the practice facility being built there. I mean it seems like it's a you know. This is the the beginning of a major infrastructure shift for the panthers to being an organization that they wanNA emulate the steelers and they wanna be simultaneously Eh analytics friendly at the same time so I think it was going to be a really interesting sort of narrow path to hit their where they are a run for his team which is typically considered to be sort of a antiquated or old school notion but making it work and so I think in the long run. They might end up being more similar to the Ravens. Who seemed to embody all those things right now in the steelers? Yeah I mean that's absolutely the franchise right now that you want to emulate if you look at WHO's doing it the best right now from both play on the field but also what they're doing inside their building and the the mindset that they have with the type of people that they hire The way that they make all their decision I think it's the Ravens and I guess that comes from the steelers family and that's so so that's what he's familiar with. But I think the other thing that we we didn't talk about was not rule that we just really have to mention. Is that while we can talk about schematics. And look at his Ex's knows and yes he's run I but you know what college offenses he bringing those sorts of things. I think the biggest reason that he was this really hot. NFL Coaching candidate over the last two years. This is his reputation. That's kind of a program builder and The work that he did at temple the way that he really kind of overhauled Baylor over the last two the three years when they were really a disaster The the way he interacts with players You know he brought his father and his former pastor and coach and you know I just think that Dad's what made him so attractive in addition to obviously like the the the skills that he has. It's an actual you know coach but You know I think we get so caught happen. Like what exactly is this. Guy's offense going to look like or what exactly is this guy's defense gonNa look like when really what owners and management are looking at is. What's this Guy's vision? How is he going to interact after everything everybody in the building? How does he relate to players What is his vision? All those sorts of things not really why they came out rule You know a bunkers you you know seventy million dollar contract Jack. Think that's very fair and I think that's really what they're bringing matt rule to do. I mean this is a guy who they think is going to overhaul everything about the panthers. The culture is going to change not that rhinovirus culture was bad. Obviously it worked for a long time but I think you know this is going to be a eighteen. An organization top to bottom built in in the vision of Matt Rule on the other side of things You think about the hiring. The giants made today in Joe Judge who granted. I think there's been that those sort of initial tweets coming out the wide receivers coach. He's really special teams coach. He is not good for one year. He has been the Patriot special teams coach for a long time. He has worked under Bill Bell. Check US worked under Nick Sabin. Those are pretty successful people to work underneath and yet it sort of seems like not. Maybe this is wrong to say but it seems like this higher is out of nowhere. Is that fair to say a little bit. I mean he was.

Buffalo Clinches Playoff Birth

"Your namesake team is in in the play offs. The bills I mean. I don't WanNa Brag Bill. Barnwell is a senior football writer at. ESPN he has consulted with NFL teams. But the bills are not in fact named after him. So tonight the buffalo bills beat the Pittsburgh steelers seventy ten clinching a spot in the postseason and bill. What's amazing about this team? Aside from being named after you Is that for most of the two thousands. They didn't even have a winning record but but now they have made the playoffs in two of the last three years during this rebuilding process. Where does this recent success begin in your mind? I think the simplest place for it to start is just hiring Sean McDermott. This is a coach. Who really seems at odds with with a lot of what? NFL Teens tend to do when they have head coaching opportunity. Pop Up Sean. mcdumber forty two wasn't like he was old but let's face face it every coaching opportunity. That's popped up over. The last three years has basically been. Let's try and get a offensive minded coach or someone who is particularly close to. Sean McVeigh and correct defensive minded coach the panthers weren't even coming off a good season they were six and ten and ranked twenty six points allowed the year before so the bills really took a shot on shark dermott top of that. The bills gave McDermott some level of personnel control. which teams are really it? Really Loath to do it. First Year head coaches but it worked. The bills had an excellent free agent period in two thousand seventeen and they earned their draft totally differently that year their previous previous GM Doug Whaley had repeatedly traded up in years past regrettable move. Sammy Watkins. Being the most notable one but damage first move was to trade down and and the first player he drafted was Davis White. WHO had a big game against the steelers? Last night tonight again squirts out of bounds around the twenty yard long. So why headed early picked in fact. We'll before McDermott joined the team in two thousand sixteen they had the twenty seventh best defense in the NFL according to football outsiders after that they started taking up up in now bill. It's one of the best units in the League. How did this defense gets so good so quickly? I mean just to keep it simple. They got rid of everybody pretty much. I mean. The fifty three players were on their roster for the final game in two thousand sixteen before Mcdermott arrived. There's three guys left in the Renzo Alexander Jerry News and Shack Lawson all front seven pieces. I mean everyone else. Fifty other players on this roster Aurora ellsworth point and the bills have drafted well. But I think what makes this team so interesting as they really go out of their way to get veterans from other rosters and saw seemed to get more out of those players in their previous teams games in their first free agent period Jordan play Mike Hide Jordan Philips for example comes to mind in recent years where he was a second round. Pick washout of Miami. The bills brought him in. He has nine and a half sacks this season as defensive tackle. That's really impressive. There's just a lot of players on this roster who either were good somewhere and have become great in buffalo or who really weren't playing very well at all or almost out of the League who have become regulars on this really talented bills defense so last year the bills. Roll the dyson Josh Allen in the draft trading up to take him seventh overall despite his lack of college production in his rookie season was pretty underwhelming warming. Bill Fifty two point eight percent. Completion percentage just five point four adjusted guards per attempt. It seemed to me that they approached this off season with a really concerted strategy to build around him in free agency. Signings worked out for the team. It's been really good. I mean it's really the same philosophy sophy we saw on the defensive side of the ball. Those have had fifteen players. I not on offense for at least twenty percents of the snaps. Twelve of those guys are new into the roster. It's both running backs. All three of their tight ends five of their six top offensive. Lineman you know in a League where so many times you hear here that a team should sign a player or they actually do sign a player because they know the system quote unquote the bills. Sort of realized. Hey we have coaches who we pay to teach each player's the system. We should just go get those guys instead and so many of those players are playing in a high level and I think. It's really been perfect for Josh Allen Alan who even going back to Wyoming. He had to play hero ball. He had to sort of make big plays for his team to win. And we've seen a totally different quarterback this shear. I wouldn't argue. Allen is finished product but he's been productive quarterback this year a using his legs to create opportunities. He's hitting a lot of intermediate passes when he didn't do that last year. And he's avoiding turnovers man after throwing four interceptions in that really frustrating loss the Patriots week for this offense. Turn the ball over four. We're times in nine games. That's incredible for an offense that really just turn the ball over at will last season and they turn the ball over twice against the steelers last last night but they still did enough on offense to victory the snap just gonNa keep it off. He will sail. into the end zone touchdown touchdown buffalo. Josh Allen from one yard out and the bills are on the scoreboard early in the second quarter. Do you think there are any lessons. That other teams can take from the bills rebuilding process. Yeah I I do think so and I'm GonNa make a comparison that I'm sure. Bills fans are not really gonNA love but there's a lot of patriots in what the bills have done in their philosophy. The bills have been great at Pro Scouting and they've really found a way to bringing those players like I said who were struggling elsewhere. who were just guys elsewhere and turn them into much better contributors with Buffalo? They've done great work with undrafted. Free Agency have a couple starters in their secondary from there as well. They built their scheme scheme to really accommodate their players. And that's not just the Patriots thing but also way ravens thing where we're seeing that with Lamar Jackson and all the great stuff they've done on offense The bills don't have a scheme that throws the ball up fifteen times a game downfield. Just because Josh Allen has a strong arm they create better throws for him that that play to his arm strength as opposed to just trying to hit a big play because Josh Allen has in his arsenal I think in the big picture. There's just this idea that you shouldn't blindly follow what the NFL does with their trans so the bills are in the playoffs. Most likely as a wildcard team and bill while the defense is he's one of the best in the league offense has been up and down they really didn't produce very much against Pittsburgh. Do you think that that's a formula that can and work in January. I do not. I think they're a team. Nobody's GONNA WANNA play this postseason. It's very different from twenty seventeen eighteen where I don't think it's fair to say. The bills sort of meant the playoffs by accident that year. When they benched tyrod Taylor Nathan Peterman in mid season and kind of just rent a hot streak into the playoffs over the final month of the year? This team is way better on defense. They have more faith than Allen and I think the playoffs actually line up pretty well for for them as a five seat which is most likely where they're gonNA fall. They're terrible matchup for the Texans who they really really gave a tough game. Two in two thousand eighteen only for Nathan Peterman the throw too late interceptions to hand the texts victory and then they gave them our tax and Fitz. When they played last Sunday? I don't think this is going to be the last time the bills are going to be in the playoffs with this court. They're really opposition to be the best team in the AFC east. If the Patriots slip any further. And I am. I don't think I think it's too far to say that I'd be the best team in the AFC east right now

The NFL's best and worst offensive arsenals: Barnwell's 32-1 ranking

"Barnwell writes these very lengthy pieces on E._S._p._N.. Dot Com and he wrote a piece that that came out early this morning ranking the N._F._L.'s. Goals offensive arsenals thirty two worst all the way to number one <hes> and basically you know he's considering how the players that the teams have will perform in twenty nineteen. He's not necessarily really just basing it off of recent <hes> recent performance. He's he's he's guessing on what you know. It will be in two thousand nineteen any says also that the as as a preface it with a lengthy the preview before he started ranking them of course in love with is that the arsenals are weighted <hes> the arsenal rankings are weighted more towards receivers than tight ends or running backs <hes> any says also the top elite level talent wins out over depth anyway the rankings start with the thirty second ranked offense of Arsenal Jacksonville Bennett's Denver Miami Seattle and then the Redskins so the redskins have the fifth worst offensive offensive arsenal in the N._F._l.. According to a bill barnwell any rights the investments Washington is made it wide receiver haven't worked out former former seahawks wide out Paul Richardson signed to a five year forty million dollar deal wasn't healthy and Seattle and cautious watches twenty passes in seven games last season former first rounder. Josh DACHSHUND hasn't developed in Washington. Just decline the fifth year option on Dachshund Jamison crowder left the jets <hes> mister relevant Trey Quinn will be as replacement Jay Gruden gruden drafted Terry maclaurin in the third round but there but is there any reason to think Washington is going to start developing whiteouts effectively. This is likely the league's worst group of starting wide receivers while that's the kind those kind the tools you wanNA put around a rookie quarterback and you know the funny thing is according to warn sharp. This is the most expensive offense in the N._F._l.. This mostly costly offense. Well take the field the N._F._l.. Because of the Investment Alex Smith and you know that is not going to write to pay off <hes> yes so I mean again another reason why you you WanNa put this on this limited offense in the hands hands of a quarterback who understands limitations in that case keenum. It's Cole McCoy too but I'm going to operate on the assumption that cultures isn't going to stay healthy so <hes> that's case keenum you don't want to <hes> experiment and test out a rookie <hes> with these with these kind of weapons <hes> especially if you're Jay Gruden and you know you have the expectation or the hope and we're assuming he does is of of having team good enough for him to remain as head coach. You know what's interesting. I was thinking about this as I was reading this early this morning. <hes> that the redskins according to Barnwell look I mean I don't know if it's the worst it's certainly among the five for six worst greg in a starting wide receiver groups and the N._F._l.. And we we know that you know in terms of offensive weapons they don't have much. I mean you have to pray. The Jordan Reed comes back plays thirteen games in his Jordan Jordan Reed again. You got to hope that Chris Thompson is a weapon out of the backfield. The dairy skies pays off as a second round pick and turns into a a guy that with Adrian Peterson is a big time back that that that <hes> Vernon Davis continues to be effective in it somebody somebody whether it's Richardson Dachshund or Harmon or maclaurin. Somebody steps up you.

"A welcome to the bill barnwell show i'm bill barnwell well here here's tuesday july second two thousand nineteen nfl season is about two months away at this point but i know that we're getting into some early fantasy football draft i think this is probably right around a good time to start thinking about fantasy and so today on the show we're gonna talk a little bit fantasy football talk a little bit about be a rookie class coming in and for those of you who have dynasty leagues who are interested in rookies for year rookie draft or if you're playing in a traditional financial lincoln just have rookies who are gonna be entering into you're typical draftable wanna talk about them and i was thinking about which colleague i might wanna have onto talking about that way then you know plenty of qualified five smart people at e s p n but then i realized oh i have a new colleague here at e s b m someone who's had on the show before a good friend of mine for a long time formerly of sb nation now up dsp on this bill conley bill welcome thanks for having me yet colleagues have you idiots gimme were formerly colleagues of football outsiders i mean you've already written you're first article for a previous ghana college football went up a what last thursday something about affect a base could count on if it takes to make each each title contender i real title contender in college football yes end that you of course i've known for many things that don't work many things in the past one of the things sp nation which i would describe as a lunatic i would say terrifying is that you already preview every college football team if i'm not mistaken oh yeah yeah i know all hundred thirty would start every february end you got about halfway this year i think you end up with kansas which is an interesting place the end in a lot of different ways but i'm assuming you're gonna be doing something similar cash adding somebody will say like i think were still discussing format now but basically you'll get batches of of previews of sorts a windy media days a free each conference start rolling out here in a couple of weeks that kind of panics conduct a couple of weeks and that's a lot of writing the do but i mean a lot of writing it to i guess and so were were rolling with it you're you're definition of a lot of writing is different from anyone else on the planet definition of a lot of writing like oh this is gonna be that bad you're still writing way more than anybody else why set the bar pretty high my first basically like sixty five hundred words there's something like that but but who am i talking to here that's you know the word couch or counter theoretical so i think it'll be alright i wish microsoft word also felt that way unfortunate 'em so today my ideas let's just go through the first two rounds of twentyfour texas having a twelve team league oh they sort of little average fantasy league average frankly having a rookie draft and i think let's go will go alternate pick by tech will go through the first two rounds i just talked about some of the players who might come up and you know think about a one relying on your insight into their college football performance which i have absolutely no insight there maybe i could help little bit in terms of their pro pro fat and sort of how they might i impressions of rookie and then in the years to come as well so bill you're the guest i think.

"I am the person who was qualified to do this. And so I bought a, I bought a greyhound bus pass. So for thirty days, you can take any greyhound bus in America. And I was like, you know, I'm, I'm smart. I will take a greyhound bus across America. I'll just write about the the smart interesting cable on the way. Yeah, just like no one's ever thought of this before. This is my idea, and I'm going to be very good at this, and it will lead me to writing career and like two weeks beforehand, I broke my foot playing basketball. At the school gym. And so I'm I'm like on crutches, like it's all I can say load-bearing break, but it's like a very uncomfortable to walk break. And I decided to start the strip in Toronto which is not in America. That's people discover I was in Boston at the time, but in Toronto, if you're twenty one, you can drink. And so I thought I'll go to Toronto and get drunk. That'll be a fun thing. Start my trip with and I got there. My foot was in pain, and I haven't actually plan that you're very well. And so I ran out of money in Toronto, and so I find this whole trip. And then I guess, just like, you know, I don't have any hotels book. This was before I could really book anything online. I don't think I even had a credit card. But after about two days of this trip, I took the bus back home to New York and my friends and be like, yeah, so I didn't actually do anything on that crossed under Trump. I said, I was going to be doing it for various. How'd the vote turnout. It's great. It's going really well as soon as soon as I got back on that greyhound bus, which I've been on a greyhound bus since I will be good to go. Number seven, what habit or quality do you think has contributed most to your success. That's fair stressing question. Being anti-social. I don't know. I say you're a hard worker again, but like I think. I hate bars. I will say that I'm really very not fond of bars. And so you know if I think my bar has to be like a very specific bar should be seats. It has to be not that crowded. It'd be tempered like temperatures will be comfortable because like I don't really drink that much. I don't drink at all now, really..

"A lot of things. There was a very Belgian place in a lot of ways, and it was. It was so strange for me because it was very, it was very different from, I think, how it's perceived now and also my expectations going in because I was brought in to, I moved to bagels. I was brought in to move to Vegas and write about. Out living in Vegas for a year in gambling and whatnot, but they didn't give me any money to gamble with. And I. Ideal. It seems strange. ESPN does not want to pay for people to gamble on sports, which is a defensible opinion from what makes sense unless you were required to do so in order to write about it. Exactly. Yeah. So it's like, okay, this is an interesting thing I have to kind of figure out and like, you know, I mean it was it was a definite fun thing to do. I was twenty seven. I moved to Vegas. It was the absolute bottom of the housing market. So like I've moved into this brand new building on the strip that like had nobody lifted before. The building was like fifteen percent full like it was surreal to be there. But you know, I never lived outside of New York Boston and San Francisco Vegas. It's a very different place. It was very isolating, but I kind of three months in it was like, well, writing about Vegas. It's fine, but like we need to have sort of like people who are hardcore writing about different sports. And so they're like, you know how to write about football. Can you write about football? Five days a week. And because they pitch man originally like member, I went on a meeting with someone. Then firemen who was the one of the editors of the site. I met John Walsh when did it being a real champion at the site and who was really close with Bill and Dan brought me in and he was like, hey, this is Bill Barnwell. He's a real work, whereas whereas he's going to write one column one blog post a week, and I hit him thinking like, that's not a lot like, that's that's not really a workhorse thing. It's kind of like a pretty standard amount of work to do. So I'm going to be pretty easy. It's getting pretty easy job lasted like three months and they're like, yeah, can you write about football five days a week? And I was like, sure why not? So it just della from there like it was a, it was a really cool opportunity. You know, I can't imagine anywhere else on the planet. Really. That was any notoriety where they would have turned their football section or sort of the lead of their football section over to a guy who is twenty seven or twenty eight who has a couple of years of journalism experience..

"About bears fans. We've talked bachelor, we've talked sports. We've talked NFL and I kind of wanted to get a background on them. I get another guy that I mostly just no over the airwaves and over social media. But an interesting cat who seems to have a brain for digging into topics and ideas and theories that many other haven't or aren't seeing when they're watching the very same games using statistics and numbers to prove or disprove theories about things. And I really enjoyed talking to him because it actually turns out he's not nearly as much of a math nerd as thought he was and his sort of path and journey to figure out. What his unique voice and and perspective would be on the NFL in sports in general was a little bit wind easier than I perhaps expected. So I really enjoyed my conversation with them and I hope you guys enjoy getting to know him a little better to. Here's my conversation with Bill Barnwell. That's what she said. Happy. Welcome in this week's guest ESPN writer and host of the Bill Barnwell podcast Bill Barnwell the kind of guy that gives you stats like the Browns, having a turnover margin of plus five against Pittsburgh in the last one hundred and thirty seven teams to have that turnover margin in a game, one hundred and thirty two of them one, three of the five teams that didn't were Browns teams. Yeah, that's too bad for Cleveland bands, but shouldn't shows a little bit of what you like to do which is to get deep into the stats and to give people information that they can't and won't spend the time figuring out. Well, let's start with with how you got into all of that and go all the way back to the beginning as a kid growing up. What were you like? I love fantasy sports. I mean, obviously that's like. A four year old. I was not for maybe four. So a little bit of that. Genius. Like like six or seven like Iowa's. The one who was like tagging along with my dad to his fantasy drafts with people in our neighborhood in queens where we grew up. So you know, like I was like, looking at the numbers and I was scout and stuff out. And then I was complaining computer games where it was like looking at at different lineups and stuff. So I was always a sports nerd. And then I always had an interest in in like information and data, and then it kinda just went from there. I mean, like I never, I didn't go to college thinking. I was going to be a writer working sports. I left college and thinking I was going to be a writer working sports, but my interest and not having a really boring day job kind of led me to work really hard to be able to try and get an opportunity. So your dad played fantasy sports as a family where you Jen generally into sports, either playing or watching? Oh, yeah. Oh, absolutely. One hundred percent. I mean, not only just watching him playing what also gambling, which is probably remember. I remember when my first memory of football and the reason I became. Giants fan when I was a little kid was because we were sleeping. I grew up in queens. That's a pretty small apartment. I shared a bedroom with my brother and sister at the time and. You know, it's like maybe midnight or so maybe eleven thirty. It's way past our bedtime, and I'm like, struggling to sleep. And I hear my dad like screaming in the living room and I'm like, what happens is terrible? What's going on? I'm maybe seven, I think at the time or six or seven at the time and I walk outside and my dad is watching football and I don't know what football super is. I have a vague idea of what football is, and I'm like, what happened? And he's like, oh, the kicker, missed the kick. We had just won the neighborhood Pullan Scott Norway to just miss the kick to win the Super Bowl for the New York Giants. And he'd won the neighborhood like boxes pool and and I was like, well, what does that mean? He's like, we're going to get a new refrigerator, refrigerator. This is great. You're awesome gambling. Apparently went when the Super Bowl goes where you went in new refrigerator. So I was very excited that really can text to a license from me..

"At me because you are just consuming information, nonstop as football approaches. Well, I mean, Mike Reese is saying that this is the second worst wide receiver core that's on Brady is ever had. I mean. I find that fascinating that is that the second was that Tom Brady's really never want has has done so much winning with such poor wide receivers with the exception of Randy moss. That is pretty amazing. It's kinda like Nick Sabin doing all that winning without having a quarterback. And now he has the greatest quarterback of the history of college football. So there's that and then there's Bill Barnwell who wrote a piece explaining how every team in the NFL could win the Super Bowl and how they do it and what their percentages are of doing it, and he grouped them in category, Mike, you have a chance you, you have a chair. Now it's a point, one percent chance, but you have a shot. Mike Ryan is a Browns fan has been since his childhood when his I will eat that the dollar

"Fifteen minutes could save you fifteen percent or more all right welcome back to the bill barnwell show i'm bill barring role of espn of course the world cup is going on right now is something that's interesting me i'm sure a lot of you watching as well and naturally one of the have someone on to talk about it a frequent contributor to this show is going to be joining us of the double pivot podcast stats bomb many places mike goodman is here mike how are you doing good thanks for having me though well you're obviously very busy man so i'm just gonna get straight to it no no long preamble we're gonna talk about some of the things we've seen so far we're recording this after france's win over peru and advance of the argentina match show so we're not going to argentina too much here because we don't know what's going to happen between the time that we record this in the time that we post this podcast but let's let's start with a broader look let's start with me some of the bigger stories from this tournament and it seems like the two most dominant factor when it comes to this tournament is video system free play var and own goals and i assume that you're not for or against own goals but what do you think about vars role in the tournament so far it's contentious issue for sure and i think it's interesting because it's one of those issues where like american sports fans have ayla a lot of experience with the good and the bed of instant replay it's actually going fluctuate we better than i than i feared and really the worst case scenario in my head but there are lots of so if the the major concern is it so much of the soccer rule book and so many soccer calls are very subject and instant replay doesn't help time with that just so many calls in that gray area even when you look at them on and i think a void that problem for the most part by not going to replay very much they've the the rules are written so that you're supposed to go to replay if you think there is a review able call and a call should only be turned much like american sports if there's you know indisputable visual evidence or whatever the soccer tournaments but what they've mostly done is only really go to replay conservatively when when there's a good chance of a call being overturned so that's good on the other hand there's still implementation issues they're still been a couple of fairly questionable calls so it hasn't disrupted the flow of the game allot which i think is was was a big concern there's still issues around the actual calls themselves right and it it's for me i'm not someone who's typically i don't have a strong opinion on a lot of things including replay when it comes to the nfl or soccer for that matter i really didn't enjoy the south korea sweden via decision because it was one of the rare time south korea actually had a counterattack going and it was you know obviously it'd be crazy so that they were gonna score from that counter attack but they any advantageous situation in the plays brought to a halt so they can review the previous play which ended up being valid penalty and i can't fault them for for calling.

"Good in on i say goodbye guys who were certainly better perhaps four or five years ago joining nelson leon halter johnson doug martin they make some moves i was more enthused by signing cherise right he was very good last year in a limited sample to hear whitehead to think very underrated player but high i mean are there a lot of positives take out of this off season for the raiders well you to me big picture off the field you're going to new you're going to a couple of years with some momentum because gruden's exciting and i think there's there's some value in that for your team but i don't know how you can be credited on adding derrick johnson or burnt jak amini or some of these older declining players i understand why did it i mean he he wants to have a veteran leader in every room as he sets the culture and chose people how to do it and the nfl there's value there's value in doing that i just don't know if they make better enough on the field to justify doing across the board and so that's probably the nature of the the criticism and y degrade is only only a c plus i thought they also were a team that took chances in the draft you know seem to be rolling the dice a little bit of the way the forty niners did in the past you know you know taking to the defensive lineman great value and wherever they got him the fifth round but there's other people that because of his heart condition wouldn't draft him if he's available in the seventh round so that's a risk there's some risks that you're taking a couple of guys had some injury concerns as well so you pair all those things together and you know i think you have some questions yeah i think certainly there's some questions it could work out you know obviously you know there is seems to be a plan here on the he said you know having those veterans in different rooms and having you know sort of stylish culture change and having gruden and the players spread n b part of that makes sense but we'll be intrigued i mean i have to admit i'm pretty skeptical i think even the colton miller pick in the first round that was a guy who don't think if you asked most teams would have been on the board leader in the first round granted offense if lyman are hard to come by and you know he certainly has some upside he certainly has the frame of offensive lineman but i think the big picture problem here is that you seem to have a disconnect where you have the reggie mckenzie group that was running this team up to this point and the jon gruden gruden's coming in here and there seems to be at least plenty of smoke up there is a you know sort of a culture fight happening there between those two besides and that gruden has perhaps more personnel power than it might have seen coming in and when you have a guy on ten year when dollar contract it's not necessarily surprising but read about this when gruden was hired i think whatever you think about him as a coach and i think he certainly proved his bona fides in oakland the first time in tampa bay is personnel decisions were not as impressive there was not a lot of great drafts when he was running personnel in tampa and so i have to admit that i'm i'd be a little nervous if i was raiders fan if gruden was going to be you know shopping for the groceries and then as well as i think he's there's no question he's in charge and that's.

"I don't know i feel like they're secondary's totally fixed i mean it's probably better with what they've done this time but it just kind of felt a little bit like more of the same i could certainly see that i think the hope is maybe at least if i'm thinking about it from a positive perspective penton is the guy who might be able to change things time capers might not have been the best fit there and i understand the fatigue thing and you know i certainly can't sit there and say well they fixed plug and play where solve games over you know they're going to be in great shape but certainly in fact that they didn't come back with the same guys we saw last year is hopefully positive as well yeah do you like the you know the they went for fuller didn't get him did that delays him from getting any veterans in the market i'd have to go back and look but that also felt like a move that wasn't to move you know right they just got revealed for the bears and they didn't and you know i she's with the bears handle the situation but i maybe a positive because the guy who was basically trade bait last year this time last year was to figure was going to be you know a on the market for a very low salary and they had a great year and now suddenly getting paid like a top five top six cornerback so could be a blessing into certainly see but yeah i wanna ask you one more thing did you love do you love jumping dumping jordy and bringing in creamy graham did you love that or like it or just okay i was going to ask you the same question that was the next thing i was gonna ask you so i'll answer but i want to hear what you think is well i'm i mean i'm of two minds of it you know certainly it's hard to judge in given that it was brett homely as opposed to aaron rodgers and eat figure even if it was a healthy jordy nelson even was twenty eight year old jodi nelson as opposed to ever hold he is now you'd figure he gets a boost from playing with aaron rodgers relative to guys it to any other quarterback in football but i have to admit that with jimmy graham i'm skeptical that he is going to consistently be guy who's going to get you know nine or ten red zone touchdown even though we have that skill set even though he has the science naturally a quarterback is gonna look for him in the red zone you just don't seek is outside of rob gronkowski do that year after year jimmy graham included so i think we saw sort of the best example a red soon threat when it candidate graham in seattle last year and i think that's gonna be tough to keep up your after your yeah and so one of the things i did was looked at jordy nelson and his last sixteen starts when rogers played it was ninety six catches well over a thousand yards fourteen touchdowns now that may be unrealistic he may be declining injury prone and no one's gonna no no ordinary looking better the packers do right so give them a little bit of the benefit of without there i just felt like there's obviously a great report and chemistry and feel goodness between your quarterback rogers and nelson i didn't feel like i feel like jimmy graham is probably gonna show up in the red zone but you don't have any of that and they both averaged about nine yards to catch last year the difference was obviously one guy's receivers probably average more nelson book one guy's playing russell wilson and that guy jimmy graham wasn't exactly lighting world on fire till you got another red zone right and so he at enough to make it justified to me i don't know they're giving them what ten million bucks hey highs anytime millionaire i'm a little ambivalent about it so that was probably another reason why it was plus i think that's fair i i don't i don't let that deal either they do agree with you on that elements of it let's talk about one more team let's get to the raiders who of course did signed jury also signed a lot of guys who might have been.

"Then he's going to have a specific plan for what to do with watkins and i realized that it wasn't the best wide receiver draft so all of those things came together but they look like a team that is gonna just try to outscore and be exciting and try to score thirty points and i don't know if that's if they're gonna do that consistently enough with the quarterback when your defense seems to be clearly in retreat a little bit yeah i mean this is eighteen where you looked at their cornerback situation last year and said lots of major problem they went out and signed a rivas late in the season had him playing meaningful snaps hitting into the postseason and then now somehow their quarterback situations worst they did forget kindle fuller in the alex smith trade but david emerson is not up to the caliber of marcus peters who was traded so i do have some major question marks about that secondary i will say though team that did address secondary and a very good offseason maybe a little higher than the plus grady gave them green bay packers who did draft two cornerbacks in the first two rounds again they manage trae down and pick up a first round pick in the process they shopped don capers for my pet in who has a very good record as defensive coordinator and got my wilkerson up front to when your team friendly deal so what am i missing here are there any reasons to be skeptical that the packers did this up i'm going to be a little critical the great here i think the grade is lower because of some longer term packers fatigue and the packer fatigue is explained in the item basically that they've dumping all of these resources into the secondary is this the year that it's going to be different you know and i think one of the one of the interesting things about them and about cleveland is they both have declared neighbors who are steering them towards putting all of these resources in to the corner and secondary position that's fascinating to me because you've got teams like atlanta seattle san diego who while they have sometimes put a lot of resources into the secondary don't have to corner by the nature of their scheme and so to me where is this packers pass rush gonna come from you're just sending funneling more and more picks into the secondary and.

"Quarterback position and and the guard move is consistent with that is that does that mean every team should do it no but they're kind of set up to be the team to do it and you know they drafted the back last year and that's just how they're going to be i agree with you it wide receiver but i also don't think their season hinges on their wide receivers so what i wanna see is you know do they have some of the young guys in place for a year or two from now when you're not bringing back you know maliki jackson or win cliffs campbell's winding down or isn't there anymore i think that's what they're going to be facing and that's what they're dressing a little bit in the draft but in the meantime can you win a championship with blake bortles while you still have tom brady and the f c i good luck to you and i also don't know though what else i would have done you know would you've gotten a different quarterback i don't know that i would have for a way more money you know so they were sort of team that's stuck in a good place but can they get to a great place yeah maybe sitting here in a year and wondering why they extended bortles for another season why they extended time coughlan duck call bone doug marrone for another year when none of them were close to having their contracts expire but because sitting here and saying that they were that close and they brought everyone back and they took that kind of that lasted leap over the over the wall this team that that really should have won the afc championship game with blake bortles a quarterback so i understand why they did some of the moves but i don't know that necessarily it seems like there may be a little higher on the guys they had last year than i am but they they have to be right to be that highest well the saints team that it'd be minus two as well i am i have to admit even before he has an injury now but the market staff portrait really colors this off season for me with the saints yeah not in a positive way i i wouldn't think i mean maybe he going to be the next great thing but it seemed like a classic maneuver of were one player away from getting over the top and we have a very short window you're kind of making decisions for the wrong reason it felt like to me and do those pan out you know i think that was a lot to give up and you know we'll see maybe they write may they're close they were there are team that's close but that just felt like felt like not good fundamentals i it seems like you have to really be confident about a pass rusher having an immediate impact and marcus davenport even the people who like him you know seem to think that he is a project that someone who could be potential star pass rusher in the long run but not necessarily a guy who's going to be a plug and play you know von miller day one superstar pass rusher but we'll see i mean the saints had a fantastic off season last year so and that's a prize necessarily they're sort of again team that believe in themselves and believes that there really does maybe right than more others chiefs another team in the same situation not necessarily that they're they went out and traded for one guy but they're free agent moves to significant additions at premium cost in sammy watkins and anthony hitchens and i don't know no that those guys are necessarily game breakers at their respective positions right now oh totally agree now i think that what can has played better than his numbers have been and you know that's you know i've talked to evaluators coaches in the league of watch the tape and said the guys run an open playing really well but you know what the same time that's two places that he's been and he's been doing those things and hasn't had the production you expect to go with it so that kinda suddenly change i think your banking on andy reid who's a pretty good guy to bank on i you know i i feel i can't reads probably gonna he got the most alex smith and to make the move they made to mahomes he's gotta feel great about that and.

"The defensive side of the ball last season we talked about the cardinals we talked about the ravens trading up not having to give up all that much to get their quarterback in the draft the jets we can't we make that same case moved up from six to three did get sam darnold and long run but gave up three second round picks on the process i don't really mind that all that much necessarily what i would say though is do you think they've given sam darnold enough in terms of his receiving core and his offense that i don't i mean yeah you can't fix everything at once especially when you're giving away a bunch of your picks so i don't think they did do enough there and when you look at that in fact it's funny i had the same conversation with someone in the league and they're like who they got a receiver and i looked it up and i you know i had to look it up to get the full depth chart i like no names i think that's usually sign you know when you just sort of stumped when you're asked about the depth chart at the position so yeah i think that's tough but you know they didn't get i think a quarterback who you easily could have seen taken number one overall and if the browns taken a number one overall people probably would've liked their draft even better than they like so give them credit for that no one's gonna care what you paid but if he's the right guy but you're right they are in sort of an odd spot i think to me in the building of their team and that is going to be a something they're gonna are they gonna be the bears next off season you know what i mean where you're really having to play catch up to try to help your guy and i think the other thing the best it this off season of courses make some coaching changes try to bring some coaches who might do better job of developing mitchell trubisky i think with with the quarterback situation in the dark i don't know that there's infrastructure in terms of the coaching as well to someone who was out of the league for several years was coaching and then just come back and become an offensive coordinator again in josh mccown who they're paying a lot of money to granted saints a very nice guy has someone who could develop a quarterback but they're paying a lot more than there being their coaches and he's someone who hasn't necessarily developed anyone anyone of the players around him into a quarterback in the past so it seems like it makes sense but i just don't necessarily know that there's the right coaching infrastructure there to develop sam darnold yet i do agree with that too you've got a defensive head coach you're bringing in jeremy bates who doesn't have a ton of years as a ofensive schemer you know in terms of being a coordinator in the nfl and what's what else is there i do agree i think that's a fair concern by love having josh mccown there i think that's much better than if he didn't have them there if you just had three young guys that wouldn't be the way to go i think mccown will be an asset i think mccown showed last season that i i mean he was better than ticipant though for sure you know what was he five and a starter or something i mean i think with that team that's pretty darn good so if he can just play some average ball for them and help the smooth the transition for darnold that's success but you're right donald is not set up to come in and like the world on fire i think.

"You know they were so good on defense so solid with their offensive quote they're able to be really impressive football team i think what it does it raises their floor you know i can't it's not hard to magin you were case keenum regress in a lot of ways is much more similar to the guy we saw a year ago or two or three years ago and where he's a a mediocre quarterback and suddenly they're getting mediocre quarterback play and now they're a team that's basically their the the nfc jaguars maybe where that's good but it's not necessarily as good as they were uric with cousins even if he doesn't necessarily have that aaron rodgers level upside it just seems like he's he's certainly more consistent than keenum and so you know he raises the floor for them where we're maybe they are a nine win team seventy percent of the time maybe they could a little higher than something cousins doesn't get injured to me when you go three years eighty four million fully guaranteed you're gonna be major but yeah and the floor is nice but when you walk into the house when we're showing the house we're not saying check out this floor we're saying look at the vaulted ceilings and to me they paid for vaulted ceiling and so don't you know at the end of this no one's going to say yeah i guess what they they went nine and seven floor was higher you know what i mean i feel like they're nine and seventeen with they bring back case keenum so they've got to be better than that i'm not a hundred percent they are but i think they might be and that's why it's be great not a it's not a negative great it's just a it's just not a anointing grade all right that's fair enough well let's talk about the tampa bay buccaneers another team in that be to your with the vikings and i load tumor i felt like given their weaknesses heading into this offseason i kind of like what they did especially along the defensive line suddenly that's a for it's been a weakness around gerald mccoy for years now suddenly their deep on on the interior and on the outside the fensive line i think they easily could be a b plus there was a little bit of you know i like the fact that they i think they paid more attention to this here to the chemistry of their team and and just the types of people they were adding and i felt like that was all that of reversal from last off season when they were sort of the rams you know team that was making these moves it got people excited about so i did like that i think the only reason it wasn't a little bit higher grade is you know with the first round pick the from washington you're taking defensive tackle relatively early in the draft is he going to be is he going to be a really good three down player is he going to be the type of guy you re sign or you're to in the end or you're gonna be saying hey good player but we need a little bit more of a pass rush from him to be what you know to to really have the value and i think wonder to what is you know what to say have left at this stage i think it's a nice addition but i think it's important for them to have a good year or a lot of people could be you know compromise in terms of they could be big changes there so that hello bit of shortterm feel to it but i understand it they had to get better at outside russia and i think they are better right so bucks i think were you know i see your point about vida he's not necessarily going to be a you know a jj watt level interior force and that's where they picked him right in that traffic rain so i do like the defa do you think it's it's at least a coherent plan for defense that was last in dvd on.

"Of the draft so that's the basis for the grade it's lamar jackson upside and it's not necessarily it's probably a if i felt like they did a great job on their receivers or the other places they to address right yeah you sort of mentioned this what the cardinals who got a high grade they they turn the josh rosen and didn't have to give up being orbiting about relative to the bills or the jets reading up for their quarterback yep absolutely and arizona i've i've heard nothing but amazing things about josh rosen how he looks and you know they may have the all time best seven seven offense ever with rosen the bradford media really gonna be amazed the off season but the issues with rosen you know our longer term is his are the knox against him in terms of durability in terms of how interact with others going to drag him down longterm it we don't know but for now you've gotta feel really good about probably having the best just nfl ready passer of the quarterbacks in the draft and like you said they traded up and didn't even pay premium which is unusual when you're hurting for quarterback so i sort of plot that and that's the basis for them having a good grade because they really were the team that needed the quarterback almost the most i mean they went they have carson palmer retires coach leave defensive coach you better get a quarterback and and to me it feels like they've sort of there's sort of the team of great escapes they somehow had kurt warner they somehow finagle carson palmer and now they've kind of finagled josh rosen out of this deal when if you were asked people to come by and whatever's gonna get josh rosen you'd say yeah trading up to five or three right now what you would have said of course and so i give him up loss for that yeah this team that went eight last year with blaine gabbert and drew stanton starting nine of sixteen games figure they can get steadier quarterback play with with bradford or rosen or some combination of both they could competitive team still yeah minnesota vikings you gave a b two and a half to admit i'm maybe a little higher on their offseason just because you think you know getting kirk cousins for without having to trade in any players or any draft picks to do so just giving away money giving money of it with spending out of money even if there's a bargain just not giving up any other assets seems like it's a a really vibe opportunity and then they got sheldon richardson on a pretty team friendly one year deal yeah so here's the thinking of lie you know this is a little bit of of a backlash against everybody's saying oh my goodness a plus you know i felt like hey wait a minute here kirk cousins last year was not as good as case keenum last year i mean kirk cousins now you had this perfect mix where pat shurmur and the scrappy quarterback who avoided the russian made your line look better than it was just hit on and you had this in maybe you couldn't have kept it going maybe it was a one year thing but now you're throwing the sort of odd mix where you bring in d filipo from the eagles and then stansky your guy on staff who probably was in line or maybe should have been the natural coordinator is now working under him and then you bring in kirk cousins who's i think we you know a little quirky into the mix and now we're like all of a sudden this is annoying thing i mean i i feel like kirk cousins has to prove that he's sort of in that second tier because if he's if he's at the top of that third tier and you're paying that kind of money and changing the way contracts or done with this eighty four million dollar deal i don't know i give him a solid b i think it's a good move it's a good off season but i don't think it's just a slam dunk and how do you how are they gonna win more games than they won last year no you know i don't think so i think what it does for me is that it doesn't necessarily raise their ceiling because we saw that last year when they quarterback play the level they got from case keenum last year they're so good elsewhere that even with delvin cook getting injured.

"The show with mike sando talking about the offseason great handed out in his espn column after talking to nfl executives and personnel man i intrigued by the ravens you gave a b plus to one of the top and i of course the we're going to have to find out what happens with moammar jackson but i do go to admit that you look at the biggest moves this off season improving really over overhauling their wide receiving corps biting michael crabtree john brennan williams need i'm not sure that they're really all that much better at receiver no i agree with you on that for i think the basis of the grade is okay you've got five or was that five quarterbacks taken in the first round one to you've got this handful of basically five quarterbacks which is typical in most drafts right and we don't really know which one's going to be better than the others we don't know i mean in years past we didn't know for sure if they can offer wentz or winstar mariota or even going back to the drafts were tanna hill and russell wilson you have a pile of guys and no one really knows for sure if josh sound guy you have so the march axon looks like he's at least as talented any of them i mean he may be more towns than any of them and and to get him at thirty second when you have longer term questions about your quarterback who's really about the most boring quarterback in the league really joe flacco to me i like that you got him at the end of the first round with tremendous upside could possibly remake your entire offense and give you something to be excited about without having to do what buffalo did to get into this to them they kind of the opposite they're moving around and i think they felt had to feel really good about what they came away with in the first round.

"But in the long run there's going to be basically missing crater from this year's draft for this for this ranch organization possibly an analytic stricter talking to about this this off season actually they came with eleven picks and if you look at the way they did it was kind of impressive and i i don't have their pick some for i think there's a a couple in their couple of four they had some concentrated at the sort of in that potential sweet spot area depending how you how you think i think most people would want the second round to be part of that too but there were they did get volume in the draft and we'll see you know who knows if they get on the players or those are good picks i think we'd all be guessing but it wasn't like tennessee which came out of there which traded up twice and had came with four picks that's true yeah i mean i like my chances better with eleven so you know to defend them to some degree they did have a big draft class we'll see you know those players or any good i think there's i think they're just the most interesting team and it's funny i have these conversations and then i've got everything together and then i seriously this is how it works by the end i'm like oh yeah it's great and i gotta add grades to it and that's kind of the hardest parts because i think these analyses sometimes defy the great rumble or sort of baiting what's going to happen and i think for the rams you could easily give the rams a c minus if you thought this is how you build a team yeah and i mean it could be the wrong about the team i don't think we really are going to know for a while but certainly the chorus still there i don't think anyone faults them for going after brandin cooks marcus peters and terms of adding talent you know you could make a case that with marcus peterson keep to leave these two players who you know their their teams weren't necessarily desperate to keep around the broncos for cash reasons with keith leaving he has dropped off a bit with age marcus peters seem like there was a there was not a fit in terms of his personality certainly it seems like they're they wanna leverage their coaching staff leverage sean mcveigh leverage week phillips in to sort of managing those personalities but it doesn't there's a lot of like you said boomer bust possibility here where we could be sitting here and saying got all these great players for second third fifth round picks but then we could also see it going really south oh absolutely it's interesting to me too young offense head coach and he add all of these personalities and interesting folks on the defensive side and says wade phillips you just figure it out and i think like hey i'll do it this is what i do let's go he's not worried about it at all but when you look at their defense and new way way phillips's defensive not this is entirely different from a lot of defenses but remember when he was in denver it's all about get the pass rushers and have the cover corners where of a pass rushers they have good interior rushers obviously sues the best in the league i mean don't this in the league and sue is a good one but look at their outside linebackers where's the rush on this team isn't that isn't that important part of the equation it certainly seem like it with with matt long might be their top defensive end right now michael brokers pace outside as well but he's defensive tackle moving outside so it's interesting you kind of figured it they would have gone out maybe the last little bit of cass base they had left and gone out inside a veteran at the very least maybe they bring back someone like connor bar win who necessarily going to be a ten sack guy on the edge at this point of his career but might be someone just to give them a body on the outside who can compete and you figure with all the veterans they have in this team they probably want to attract some of those outside its rushers might wanna try and compete for a super bowl in is it a good thing to bring all these personalities and you.

"Even if he works out is probably going to be a player for two or three years from now than a player who's going to transform this year so i mean it could work out it's out of the question but it just you're taking an incredible risk in doing so so we've got a couple of things left we some news broke in the action in the hour before we recorded this podcast and one of them is his pan related it seems like jason witten the longtime tank for the dallas cowboys my opinion a first ballot hall of famer is retiring and he's going to become the latest dish in to the monday night football crew so he's now coworker probably inclined to say nice things about him obviously someone who i think was a before he came to work for espn first ballot hall of famer for the cowboys do you think if they knew jason witten was going to retire that they would have been so aggressive and moving on from brian that's a tough one because it feels here's a probably going to be surprising to you build i don't have a huge pulse on the inside the dallas cowboys locker room sure that being said i have i have a feeling that it dez with the amount he was going to cost them and with the headache that he's been the last three years and i don't mean it just from an off the field standpoint by any means i mean even on the field he has just not been what it is they've been paying him to be i think they wanted a fresh start to be able to go a different direction that's fair reasonable but the problem is now jason witten retires cowboys reportedly were not expecting it they were blindsided in perhaps the same way that bryant was blindsided when he was cut by the cowboys this receiving core it's problematic and then we have jeff swain rico gathered blake jar with a half to admit i did not know to those people where nfl players and tons of chapter thirty seconds ago the wide receiving corps it's okay it's alan hearns terrance williams cole beasley ryan switzer the update thomson i mean those are you know.
