He hated the way. It's glass is seem to follow him no matter where he stood in the room he hated the way the skin was displayed. As though killing was something that should be rewarded. He tried to hide his disgust. When tourists made the same crude jokes people posed with it like they had killed it themselves themselves? Vigo was tired of looking at it pretending that it was some charming story. Legend said that the castle walls crumbled to the ground if the skin was removed despite what he said to paying customers. Vigo did not give much credence to the supernatural stories around for guard. She had never seen anything out of the ordinary. "With the national emergency declaration brings the battle to federal court. Democrats environmentalists and property owners will face the Trump administration in courtrooms across the country. Arguing his redirection of funds without legislative authorization is unlawful more from Steven Nelson. White House reporter at the Washington Examiner. Stephen what happens next and all this. That's the big question. Cuts in Trump's forecast is accurate. He will lose for courts in the ninth circuit before he hopes winning at the string court that is his guests you typically you don't hear a potential defendant predicting that they're going to lose battles in court. But I keep saying that that's what he expects and he expects to ultimately victorious the supreme court. It'll will come down to I guess a question about defining. What an emergency is. So we will come down to many different. Things you know, one of the most basic issues a standing who has a right to sue here who is harmed by their being declared. This lawmakers tried to sue they could be found to lack standing because they are able to do something about this. They can just pass resolution overwriting their -mergency. Once standing issues are resolved. The question that, you know, of course, is whether judges should you declared emergency at all. Before even reaching the threshold Russians. Some legal experts. At least we if that's each would not judge whether the because they will deem the declared. A political question that just shouldn't be reviewed by courts. Explain what your reference to just a moment ago about the possibility of congress doing some sort of override instead of going to the court. Sure. So congress can pass the resolution disapproving of the national literacy exploration, of course, to tell right through the democratic house. I would go to the Republican Senate where they're Republican defectors, and you know, quick, plus we could to the Senate would have to take it up pass in person. Trump would then of course, Biko it. So that is option that much leaders have to provide Trump, but the fact that remedy exists may undercut the ability of congress people actually sue speaking with Steven Nelson White House reporter at the Washington Examiner. He's written a piece entitled Trump bus congressional gridlock. Moving wall brawl into court, somebody in your story referenced this could destroy the precedent for emergency. Explain that. Sure. Well, of course, there were. Areas, you know, restraints that aren't necessarily legal restraints. But you know, they're just traditional things that people don't do because they are afraid of what may happen when the other party gets in control during this debate. Of course, President Trump wanted to I sixty told in the Senate, and he wanted to be a majority and Mitch McConnell refused. Because he knew what would happen is Democrats becoming control. The exact same thing. So here the argument is, of course, that, you know, Trump is declaring the -mergency for this. You know, Democrats getting declared emergency for something else. It was pretty explicit about the possibility of that happening. You said that one there could be this court battle, which may be goes to the ninth circuit, maybe goes to the supreme court for you reference to be property litigation here, also. Yes. And that's somewhat different matter. I in two thousand six hundred leave congress passed legislation to fund fencing rather than a border wall border sensing, and I it took more than a decade results of land rights issues with property owners. Did not want depending on their property. So aside from the question of whether it's the emergency declaration is legal. Just a question of whether the government can take the land. That's required for with the limiting of these physical barriers to the Rio Grande valley. Right. Which is I think what the the recent agreement was that was signed. What about the him going after now what eight billion dollars in total? Does that open up different land for barriers to be built? Yes. So with the one point four billion approximately that congress approved for various that was fifty five mile stretch in Texas along the Rio Grande valley. So it'd be eight billion in total, which is actually it's six point four billion doing the match at six assists, six point four billion additional money that you know, that presumably we could also at the White House had he background cokes. Waning the declaration. And he did not specify where exactly at the wall was going. They were careful to specify that it will be steel barrier. Which of course, President Trump talk about about Steven Steven Nelson White House reporter at the Washington Examiner. Former.

"All right. Let's as this is all happening. It's the. It really does feel like, you know, I watched a little bit of morning Joe this morning because I was just curious. I know it's first time in. Ever and. It was they had on JIRA hottest on they really. Yep. And he mathematics that you're talking about. He was on. It is. But it's fascinating to see all these things that lineup. I mean because they they spent the whole day talking about the shutdown. It wasn't Joe and Biko. It was the it was Willie Nelson. Whenever the guy's name is. Oh, that's the hand. No. I don't think it's really guys so Willie Geist was hosting, but they they're talking about the shutdown and it's getting serious, right? And they're mocking in the same way that we have Donald Trump and Wilbur Ross and Larry cudlow trying to seem like they have, you know, actual warm blood flowing through their veins like the millennials. But then this story that is coming out of Gobbo's. The main story is the critique of Davos at this point, at least in what's in the in Davos has been sort of out of the the news for the past couple of cycles in part of it is that there's this critique out there and. They've let people into the building on some level where the critique is. And here is an exchange, and this is just a stunning exchange for for multiple reasons. And I think they should be obvious to a lot of people a Washington Post reporter is moderating the this panel. And it's a Washington Post panel, the the reporter is Heather long. She just does like a general beach. She's nico. No. She's she's she is. Kyron here as an economics correspondent for the Washington Post. Now, I just want everybody to of sit with that for a moment in a magin what the base line knowledge of the United States economy and just the things like the history of the economy, basic stuff, basic basic knowledge of how the tax system works. Very basic overview. She is doing this panel on it is this guy is Michael Dell from Dell computers, right? And this guy from MIT named Eric. Jolson he is director of MIT's initiative on the digital economy. And so here's the exchange. She asked a question, they get a big laugh because the idea of actual tax regime is hilarious. But listen to where this goes, they're growing calls to address these inequalities, particularly the wage inequality with more taxes in particular in the United States. There's been a call by congresswoman Cossio Cortez to tax people earning over ten million at a seventy percent tax rate. The current top rating states is thirty seven percent Michael Dell do you support this? I just want to thrill that. Wow. Well, look, I mean. My wife, and I set up a foundation. Twenty years ago positive. I just love the fact that he can't even joke around like they're all laughing in he immediately. He immediately goes to the talking points that he that that that his like he goes into defense. Can we say that Bill Gates who's more classy unless I mean, I hate Bill Gates, but he's less of like an obvious moron than Michael Dell. Made exactly the same point. About twenty years ago, and we would have contributed quite a bit more than seventy percent tax rate on my income on my annual income, and I feel much more comfortable with our ability as a private foundation to allocate those funds than I do giving them to the government. All right. I'm not supportive of that. Well key. And and and I don't think it would help the growth of the US economy. That's interesting. And can you say more about wine? Why you don't think it would name a country where that's worked ever? United States briefly in the eighties. Positive first off I off she is completely stumped by his his challenge. Name country where it's worked. In addition to having no further really follow up. This is the this is an economics correspondent for arguably the second most important newspaper in the country. I don't know where would rank internationally, but a fairly important paper that internationally as well an economics. Correspondent not the economics. Correspondent. And she says for a short time in the eighties. Now when Reagan knocked it up he wacked it up to eighty percent. The decree hop marginal tax rate starting in nineteen thirty six through through till nineteen eighty two was never below seventy percent..

And we are they are sleep best friends. Find out what our panel. Thank of that veracity Pillay in Johannesburg and Jonathan Steele here in London studio with me, but before we get into that Jonathan you've come to us fresh from a conference on Syria in London this week. This is a very interesting conference at the London School of economics, mainly with Syrians taking part. Basically the exiles. So they're not program in any way. But they were quite depressed about what was happening because who knows wars winding down, and that means that there's less killing going on the government is determined to sort of beaver said one of the academic said to be fortification mode. They want to make sure that this new resurgence of violence and song. And it even goes the question, whether the government wants refugees to come back because as one of them, again, another one put it the government doesn't have the resources not only not to feed people coming back to police them because the sources fear that there could be a new uprising us there wasn't twenty eleven and even talking about people coming back does that mean that there is a sense that the conflict is winding down. I think there's a definite sense. I think everybody agrees including opposition people. Hold up mainly in. Live in northwest, Syria. The rest of the country's back onto government control, the whole of Damascus big cities, Hampson Hammond. And. Leper so fighting house really calm down and the government claims they control what they call can the terrible phrase useful, Syria. The area. They consider doesn't matter in the northwest doesn't matter, but the big cities in the spine of the country, which runs no south from leopard entre Moscos's back from and government is very very interesting to hear the you say there's consensus that the conflict is winding down and get one of our contributors recently was talking about standing on the balcony of her home in Damascus and seeing the bombs falling on another part of the city will I think that's a little bit out of date. Now that used to be the case when I lost about a year ago. You could hear the poems and see the plain song. After the fall of Houston Huta in the spring of this year, pretty much, Damascus suburbs and back government control back under military control. But as hinting from this conference is the whole question of political Israel and government is not going to make any concessions, those can be no compromise or to alter the in fact, the Geneva talks dead dead sing because the government is determined to consolidate its victory, forty five country grounded Sern regime and not make any concessions tool, and as our other guest on the line from Johannesburg knows very well one thing is is the struggle. And another thing is the peace afterwards and Borussia Pillay on the line from Johannesburg. You've been looking into something else. We talk about South Africa we used to as the rainbow nation, but you have been looking at an undecided of racism within. Would you say? Within the black community. Absolutely. The skull within the black community and within the Asian community. And in fact, many communities I myself am of south Indian descent, so I really had from both sides being sort of sixth seventh generation growing considering by South African as well as of Indian descent and seeing just how these tropes play out. And because it's so much of a black lives have been discussed in relation to to whiteness and colonialism. It's only now that we started to have this conversations within black communities, which I think is really important that we start talking about how have we internalized notions of self hatred, and so on and a one of the one of the obvious things is the skin lightening creams, which understand you're searching. Yes, I'm actually writing a book on the topic of color rhythm and cutter ISM. You know? It's it's got so many. Sort of impacts in our society. One of them is of course, you know, the most obvious one is the very damaging nature of skin lightening creams in South Africa. We were fortunate enough to had those band very early on in in in our in, you know, in the sixteenth s the damage became apparent and people still use them they're widely available in black markets. And and you know, it's not just about the health risk. There's so many studies that show that lighter skinned people are lacking black people get much more in all kinds of opportunities job opportunities. You only have to look at Hollywood to see this. The light skinned the lighter skinned black woman is is usually cost darling. And the darker skinned black woman is cast as the villain and just how it is becoming in growing and growing conversation with these kind of things are being unpacked, and it really reaches across the world. And when I visited India for the first time, I was considered extremely dark, and and it's very interesting to me because I grew up under. The influence of black consciousness of Steve Biko where you taught to love yourself, and that influenced my understanding of my own skin color, and in India, it really was seen as a huge, Mark. I could not find makeup in my skin color. And I'm I could not find any creams that did not have skin lightening in them. And as you say this is prevalent across the rest of Africa, the Congo, Nigeria and so on. Coming. You mentioned black consciousness. I was just wondering right now, the ANC is. Emphasizing blackness much more. In fact, I think Tabor Mbeki recently said the ANC is becoming a black party. He was saying that was a criticism and you've got the economic freedom fighters. Rules, pushing sort of black power entering into this debate on on this sort of saying to toback people you shouldn't fool for this nonsense about calories and trying to look whiter than white. So absolutely. This is a very much a debate that I think is raging amongst the diaspora and blackmail across the world, whereas in South Africa because of the fierce black pride and a big movements towards owning your blackness. It would be considered very unfashionable to to avert. We say these things so it's really subtle. It's really a subtle thing. You know, they'll be adobe slang terms. Coined Appalachia skinned woman, yellow bone, and there'll be a preference towards them in music videos, and in also liberty culture. They'll be gradual lightning of our liberties getting lighter and lighter because they're using something called glutathione. Injections, which is not tested at all in terms of health implications, and literally lightens your skin. So there is this professing publicly of being proudly black while I'm working really hard to conform to a standard of beauty in terms of intensive one skin color and other aspects of how presents themselves. Hey up of fat. So while the ANC are very pro black. You know, there's so many issues for them to tackle. They haven't quite got onto this one yet. Well, let's hear more about that issue later in the program rationally Pillay on the line from Johannesburg and Jonathan steel here in London. But right now, let's go to France where the capital is waking up amid fears of another weekend of violence and new nationwide protest of the zone. All the yellow vests is due to take place in the coming hours, the government as well as major unions have called for calm asking protesters to stay away from places where many of last week's more violent incidents took place in the capital, but also in the rest of the country to in Paris, major attractions such as the Eiffel tower will remain closed today. "A capitalism of decay because there's no way to rise up and get out of it because they're lacking the resources that we talked about in those sharing economies and their tripped up by the feces of cassava and capitalism right that cassava has to be processed in order not to be poisonous and i would argue that similarly the market economy needs to be processed in order to be fair to everyone so we have to look at what i call the bottom down economy these are the sharing models that exist out there that need to be propagated and used and scaled okay and if we propagate these things we can begin to bring infrastructure to everyone and that will ensure the communities are leading their own development which is i believe what we need in the world and i would suggest what we need in africa i wanted to quote steve biko and i thought it was really important to quote steve biko because next month september twelfth to be exact is the fortieth anniversary of his murder by the south african state and you can read the quote you know he basically said that we're not here to compete and i love this quote to make us a community of brothers and sisters jointly involved in the quest for a composite answer to the varied problems of life and he also said that the great powers of the world of done wonders giving us and industrial and military look and we don't have to copy that military industrialists complex because africa can do things differently and restore the humanity.
