"In eleven is what to do with gio raina. Stardom bring off the bench. What kind of role do you see for rain on saturday on where giovanni rain. It's fitnesses after the champions league mid week and we've seen them come off the bench at times that i'm wondering a game of this magnitude after the league game this mid week. Maybe that is the role we we don't know yet I've actually reached out to him and they're going through that kind of training in regrouping after that championship. Game right now so he actually doesn't even know what that role is. I will say this though. It's very interesting that derek brings it up. Is that softness of dortmund. How many big games have they lacked the real nuance to the game. Where maybe it's not the prettiest of styles but it's effective. That's always been the one question. Mark around dortmund especially over the recent times last. Five seven years or whatnot. And this one may be different because of the vulnerability of barnum munich. I think dorfman kind of looks at it and says you know what we may have this now in saying that they also have an inexperienced squad at times in these big games and whether or not that rears its head is another one. Giovanni riina is a massive massive part of what this team wants to do going forward and especially if he starts from the beginning. I'd argue that provides been one of the weaker players for bar munich. Since the return that gives rain a real opportunity to have an impact on this match derek. I don't think anyone would accused by munich of being soft and yet there are some criticisms. I guess you could say some worries about their depth. Maybe their defense. What are the real concerns heading into this weekend for. Hansie flick is other than that hockenheim game. It's really hard to point to any football. We've seen from byron with a critical eye will not go along fully with taylor with regard to bone jump avar because he has not been playing well this season we have seen lapses in concentration really silly mental mistakes. You think back to that game against hawthorn high when he was just terrible all his game you think about being nutmegged by john of bielfeld recently and even as recently as the zell spore game in midweek in the champions league you know by a know that he is somebody who has not really stepped forward the sees now they signed buna or somebody who can play there. I'm not ready to say that. I think he will come in for path for this game but by certainly is on notice that he asked to game and so like geo. Raina will be fully briefed on that. And we'll try to take advantage of that Taylor also mentioned david. Alabama that contractual situation alabama was in many respects the star man of the defense one of the star of the team last season. He has been a little bit. Disappointing again tempering. "Reformer Sean and Frank coming up this hour the compensation package for the Commissioner is the deal of the century me. Mom are still having trouble attracting hiring police recruits to patrol the streets. The everybody wants to be a commander or an administrator. Cummings is bowing to fight 'til the death. We'll tell you what that is all about governor HOGAN picked the wrong school issued a fight and watch more here in this hour. Including our outrage of the day includes Franken science we reference this a little bit late in the show yesterday. But we have a little bit more to share with you in this particular, our congressman. And before we get to congressman Cummings. I wanted to we talked about this earlier this morning, and we have been through a gazillion. Commissioners here in the last twenty years with only one having any real effect on the crime rate. That was a Fred Bielfeld was probably one of the better ones in recent days in the last several ones have just flamed out. And Gary tugwell never really got the got the gig. So it's either B it's so difficult attracting candidates after Joel FitzGerald of withdrawal. Or the city's getting desperate that they've come up with this compensation package for the Commissioner. Elizabeth a twenty five percent increase in salary two hundred seventy five thousand dollars a year for five years. Three percent increases every year for five years three thousand dollar housing allowance or expenses. For the first year. And of course, they're in apparently crime reduction incentives included in the package, which I'm all four. But I think that you should do a little trade off there a little less than salary more on on. Remember this Commissioner has already pulled down one hundred sixty thousand dollars in pension from New Orleans. Plus if the city council votes him down next month. He gets one year's pay. Now, do you know of any other job that you would apply for the job? And if you don't get it you get paid anyway for a year. I mean, I've never heard of this before. Now, maybe you know, again, he he insisted on that. Because I left the New Orleans police department. Nah, I'm out there. My I'm at risk here. If I don't get the job, I'm out of work hundred sixty thousand dollars a year. So again, Michael Harrison might be worth every cent Frank. But I just think this is again in the city that has that has difficulty managing the finances. We got a school CEO making three hundred grand a year horrible. Test results. We've got a visit Baltimore CEO making three hundred twelve thousand dollars a year. If he could get people to visit Baltimore, maybe he might be worth every cent based on the current homicide rate in the portfolio time is going to tell but this has been going on for so long now trying to replace. Darryl d'souza. It's been months, and look how long we spent I say we Baltimore City spent and knowing after the Fort Worth police chief. I mean, whatever happened to that deal. It just seemed like it was. He was the the heir-apparent almost. And then the next thing, you know, he's he's just completely forgotten because his son got a a mass download his brain withdrew to needs of his son. But if you would have offered him two hundred seventy five thousand dollars in all these perks and bennies, and what have you what do you have taken it? So baby they thought of themselves. They're going to have to up the ante. And of course, if you have a guy who's already doing well in the police department down in New Orleans operating. Under a consent decree, and what the federal judges overseeing what he was doing. That was probably someone that was better qualified and the Fort Worth police chief to begin with let me get this guy. I guess they maybe I don't know what he's demands weren't. What do you think is more valuable in this case one police Commissioner at that salary or six police officers on patrol? Well, be honest with you. I think if you have the right guy leading the department you mentioned, Fred Bielfeld. He was a good guy. My favorite has always been Donald problem. He's the gold standard in my estimation. When it come to the police commissioners here in Baltimore City. So if you have the right guy, I mean Palmer ran a strict. He came in when we were facing similar problems in the Baltimore City. Police department in all due respect to Bernie Schmidt. He came up through the ranks things were going wrong. There was the same kind of corruption and this and that regarding police officers, and what have you something had to be done? So the international chiefs of police come in. They guess who guess who was one of the lead persons among the international chiefs of police one Donald Paulo. So when they determine that a change be made who stepped forward Donald Pomerleau and the rest of of course is history. So we've gone down this road in the past. And as the result, we were able to get him is the best ball Baltimore City. Police Commissioner in my lifetime. And hopefully, Michael Harrison, maybe the next one. Now hope we certainly hope so wish him well now with the next problem is we're we started the year. Five hundred officers short vacancies in the Baltimore police department. We're now at five hundred and thirty six short after hiring. So we lost more than we hired in two thousand eighteen. How do you figure that how do you explain in a police officer calls early this morning to tell us, you know, the Baltimore City runs? A continuous almost running training academy for five six classes a year. Whatever the case may be and what happens is Baltimore City taxpayers train these recruits in the academy, and then the county swoop in and offer them more money and cherry pick the recruits away. What's a two way street in Baltimore City. Could do the same thing if they wanna put place. No restrictions on where police officers have to live that worked in Baltimore City. Or if you have to be from Baltimore City is a qualified to be a police officer, if they can just, you know, wipe that off the slate, and then just go out and get the best and the brightest possible, no matter where they come from where they live and give them the same kind of incentives or maybe even more. So because of what they're going to have to face in Baltimore City a crime ridden city, then maybe the. You'll get more recruits to come into Baltimore. Well, the other thing is, you know, we've got county police forces that are reading the city training academy should the city be reimbursed for the money, they spent the train this recruit. If you're gonna then going to hire them away from the city, I think the answer to it is Baltimore City ups the ante. More. Pay them more. Give them a better deal. Making Megan almost impossible for them to. Offer you can't refuse eight fourteen time for WCBS, traffic.
"Mona Lisa Effect" Not True for Mona Lisa
"This is science Americans sixty seconds science. I'm Christopher Dodd Yata. Davinci's most famous painting also has an optical illusion named for it. The Mona Lisa affect. It's the feeling that the subject of a painting is following you with her gaze to continuously fuel being looked at despite moving to the left of moving to the right paps, even rotating picture Sebastian law is a psychologist at the university of Bielfeld in Germany, and while he doesn't dispute that the illusion itself exists. He probably also seen it in the Sam army recruitment. Poster he says, there's a problem with the phenomenon's name a construct your son, so many papers on what people have literally started to introduction with. We all know that of these looks at you. And so on the full, and then he would go into our argument, whatever it is. But actually, she disposition picture doesn't look at you. He and his colleague horsemen conducted a scientific investigation of this claim by sitting twenty four volunteers in front of a computer screen, which displayed various magnification of the Mona Lisa. They placed rulers at two. Distances between the subjects and the screen, and then ask the subjects to indicate where on the rulers the Mona Lisa's gays intersected, and then you can compute a line that specically school mathematics here. And then you can figure out the angle what came out was fifteen degrees to right. So the Mona Lisa actually stairs over the viewers, right shoulder. He says not straight out of the canvas the key to creating her namesake allusion. The right up is in the journal. I percents in Las says affects like these can have modern implications too. For example, when building virtual assistance on computers, which might need to speak to and make eye contact with more than one person in a room as for davinci's masterpiece. There's still another illusion. That remains the mysterious ambiguity of the Mona Lisa's smile. Thanks for listening for scientific American sixty seconds science. I'm Christopher Don. Yata?

I just happened at the Pinellas county jail. Here's the local sheriff boy man told officers that syringes removed from his Bank side where well not his tough to believe. But who knows forty year old Wesley Scott was arrested Friday evening on outstanding drug warrant wants the county jail Scott removed the syringes from his backside and in charge for trying to Eggers. Contraband, he was held on five thousand dollars. I understand people trying to smuggle stuff in jail. But he claims the syringes were not his. They were not. So how did they get there? Backed into it. You're you're you're sleeping, and someone is pushing syringes in your backside, and you don't feel it. Not one but three, and we're they did they have needles on them. Or they were just the the syringe. Thank you, get the point. Oh, of course, it'll be the butt of many. Oh rolling along the assembly line here. That's right. There you go three syringes. You gotta be pretty desperate singing group. I think that had shot to the heart Sanford and son one time was the three degrees, right? Juggled a couple. Three syringes six eighteen eighteen minutes after the hour. You could join us here for ten WCBS eighty one eight hundred CBS's eighty emails AM, six eighty wcbMcom text into the show again, this is a real. It's a real problem. We do not have a police Commissioner, we did not seem to have that many people who are interested in being the police Commissioner and his Franken I have discussed for years, isn't it now time for the governor and the general assembly to do something in this session because we've seen mayor after mayor, whether it's this one Pugh, whether it was I think the last really good police Commissioner we have Fred Bielfeld. I thought he did a really good. He was good. He was good. And of course, eventually you can only take so much because you are constantly trying to please. Several masters, and that is you know, you got the rank folly of your police department. Did you have to try to keep happy? You got the union. You have the mayor the city council, and you have the constituents the the community in of itself. I haven't heard the name. Fred Bill filled spoken in quite some time. I'm not in your conversations with Franken the morning here. But I remember him being a very nice guy. Very. Very concerned about all the problems and really wanted to fix them. But what I remember most about him. He was very frustrated. Yeah. It was because this is what this is what you run up against as I said, these other hurdles are just not you can't dismiss them federal the consent decree civilian review board this call for community policing, the fact that you are I believe five hundred officers short summer saying three hundred, but I think the adequately police these areas especially east and west Baltimore, you need five hundred more officers on the street. And then when you get them, you gotta keep them. And you've got to keep them happy and you've got to commit to them proper training. Because you saw what happened during the, Freddie, gray writes in two thousand fifteen police were told to stand down, please didn't have the proper gear so on and so forth. So it is as I said a very difficult task. All right. You're listening to Sean and Frank Maryland's wakeup call. Hi. This is Mike Ditka. And you might know.

"And we were there with Ernie Grunfeld 's son. Ground filled at the time was the general manager of the Washington Wizards. And I know nothing about dude, I wanna say bad, you know. But my media thought there was like, wow, Ernie Grunfeld. He's not a very good general manager like I say that to face another like that. But that was my thought. That was twenty twelve. It's twenty eight teen Ernie Grunfeld is still washing wizard general manager in fed gave do you know what year already Grunfeld became the general manager of the Washington Wizards. Two thousand eight two thousand three oh, man. I was off. Okay. I was too. I had to look it up. It was like wow, two thousand three. So let's think about this for sec. I am thirty eight years old the Washington Wizards having won fifty games in my life. That means that Ernie Grunfeld has been the general manager since two thousand three and they have now won fifty games who gets to keep their jobs, general manager NBA francesa fifteen years, and you weigh one fifty games who who's he got dirt on. I feel like every team in the NBA other than the Hornets have won fifty games in a season in my life. Every single what you pull a team out. And I'll tell you about the time that they want fifty games, right? Even clippers managed to come around and find way to win fifty games, the timber wolves. They've had a season where they won fifty games. The Grizzle the Grizzle of had a year. Maybe even a couple. Where they've won fifty games. If I'm not mistake. Everybody's one fifty games. But these bums no matter what happens they're not gonna find a way to win fifty games. And yesterday, there was just a leak explosion around this team that we've known the problems that they've had we'd getting along and everything else. And we knew this thing was ultimately going explode. If we didn't know it when John wall did day interview where he said he looked at Bradley Beal as side kick, and he looked at himself as one and Bradley Beal as one eight. Brad Bielfeld about that. Don't actually really like each other. At least they don't seem to. It's always been a weird sort of situation that they've had. So we wound up. What was the first league gay Shams came out there? 'cause I can't even remember them in order now..

"And while that might not work out great for the player in the long run, you're giving him the opportunity to do what he does a place that he wanted to go at a high level program. And if it doesn't work out, it doesn't work out. But I think there's very little risk, but those two, those two reasons are the things that I think might not make it go well sums it up pretty well coach. Anything to add to that was well said, I think those are both issues, but going back to the second part of that. I'm not sure they bring them in if they had the confidence at the end of the year when they recruited him that the three young post players, you know, they just weren't sure about a race and forced her and more. And so bringing in someone who started a lot of college games and has three years and brings that veteran presence. I think they really brought them in here for a purpose, not just necessarily an insurance, but I do think that if the other young men play than India. China's got a really great problem on their hands of of excellent players. And but I think again, I just see that the flexibility that he allows Archie with the lineups will be more of the reason why he plays. But again, defense and rebounding at the level that needs to be done to big tennis is the main concern. I think that we have to have. And if he if he gets passed by that, that that should make us all happy in Archie doesn't seem like a guy who doesn't anything on a whim or without a plan in place. So we can all be confident that I'm Jerod Morris. This is simply Koa radio here with the Bryant on Sony, the coach in India bottom. So one last point I wanted to make about this. It's really easy. I think to look at fitter and think about max Bielfeld a big guy coming in. He's a good shooter, grad transfer really filling specific need that we had. And so one of the things I wanted to do in preparation for this is just look back at Max's season and kind of see what Evan would need. Due to have the same impact maxed it because you think back to the impact he had on that twenty sixteen team, and there's absolutely no way that team wins the big ten without max Bielfeld. I mean, he was such a consistent force had really big moments in tight games. We're in the end of really need a veteran to step up. And the thing I was struck by kind of looking back at Max's numbers. They were a lot better than I thought. And so I actually think comparing Evan to max or expecting what max brought is probably an unfair expectation for Evan fits Evan or max averaged eight point two points and four point five rebounds which aren't numbers that bull you over, but your member, he was coming off the bench. You know, he played forty three point, six percent of minutes, which I think is more than Evan will play. Certainly based on what we've seen him do recently in the role we expect him to have. I don't know that they'll play quite that much unless someone gets injured, but MAC shot forty five point, three percent from downtown. He actually had a block percentage of two point six and a stupor Senate of two point eight. And to put that into context. Those are really good number. Those are nationally ranked numbers Evan than get, you know, blocked percentage of one point one or something like that doesn't get steals so actually contributed those two ways and his offensive rebounding percentage was twelve point two percent, which was top one hundred in the country. As defensive rebounding percentage was eighteen point four percent which is better than what you wanted last year. So. You know, it was fun going back and looking at that and we love max on the show. He was better than advertising twenty sixteen. And so it's always fun to relive that, but I just think is you kind of frame your expectations for Evan as an I. You fan. Look, if he can reach the impact max Bielfeld had and be a sixth man of the year. That would be unbelievable. But I think that's probably a bit beyond what he'll contribute this year. And then with that said, none of us expected max to do everything that he did a grad transfer..

"The question of her how are we able to see see a new the answer but i just wanted to audience here too how do we see such a reduction in crammed doing her just couple years his mic prior two masked everyone's blake coming up within the numbers began creeping up again and she talked about not just the arrest evil they quit after as commissioner fred bielfeld attempt said bad guys with guns but the comprehensive approach that her government and city government took towards going after the source of some of the court and that's one of the reasons that it kind of sustained for those few years or one zero four six seven wbal four one zero four six seven w b a l where we sit today that i'm repeating this for we everybody wants to stick homes of people a hundred ninety seven homicides where we are as of july the twenty six two thousand and at at seventy six years ago two thousand eleven one hundred ninety seven homicides with the number for the whole year the whole year and the air before that was like barely like to taylor some in the air before that was like 225 me that what you could see it going down there was a precipitous drop from the two seventy two eight east of the of the 2000s after mayor marty my left in two thousand seven there was still two hundred and sixty in something like that so you begin to see it go to a note is that it wasn't just the homicide care without us mike has with sticks out cheap it was not fatal shootings as the mayor said it was carjackings it was right there were all different levels of crime that would begin to show reduction because the arrest was part of it but people who are violent criminals were the focus would being dealt with but there was more than that and that's why you know this bill being heard in the city councillor in reference to a one year mandatory minimum i understand it i just their weather weather police are doing particularly based on the statistics showing the sixty percent of individuals with this particular charge last year two thousand sixteen when they went.
