"Today's guest all the way from Brisbane. Australia is James. Cridland the editor of the leading source of podcast. News Hug News Dot Knit. Without the twentieth easily radio and online business in two thousand five James help loans, the first daily podcast from UK, radio station and the world's first regius station streaming. APP, he offers a truly international view is a bridge leading Austrailia witnessed companies across the world including North America. He's also a keynote speaker and consultant, and wrote his first podcast RSS, fading January two thousand five, and also launched the first live radio streaming at from eyeball finds in Cya. Importantly, he's worked in the audio industry since nineteen eighty nine. Welcome, James, thank you so much for having me what we only spoke last week. Your against on the podcast festival, a joint production with podcasting buddies mean to doll and safety. That was a law show with you. Questions thrown in a producer might. this week prerecord so will move a bit slow pice if that's okay, Hanna absolutely fine I'm glad you said that. Look I feel like running exchange program. You're a Briton stride. Yet I'm in London. What's it like in strider? The moment I hear a lot of the lockdown restrictions eliciting. Yes, Oh, they're beginning to lift him in. We can't so. I'm in Queensland can't go anywhere in Queensland. We're not allowed to leave. Leave our great state, although I state frankly is big enough, so that's all okay, but yeah things are beginning to beginning to relax I'm not quite sure what the latest figures were, but certainly we we've had one case one coronavirus case in the last A. Week or so here in Queensland so you know we're doing. We're doing pretty well rather better than you guys think, and you'll side pod news dot net which I encourage one to sign up for the daily newsletter. Have you seen increasing traffic is forecasting immuno thriving during this pandemic I mean pain and increase in the amount of people getting it, which is nice and the amount of people. Using it, but I mean obviously. There's been an increase in podcasting as well so actually in May. We saw a new record for the amount of podcasts launch, ninety, six, thousand, five hundred. So you know you can clearly see and yes, some of that is going to be Ju to coronavirus, and the fact that you can launch a podcast of your home and you might. You might be a bit bored or whatever but I think also part of that is just because podcasting is actually growing and quite a lot of those. We're going to launch anyway so you know a tremendous amount of growth there and suddenly podcast hosts of I'm talking to that saying that as as significant increase in the amount of you know in the Mount of people signing up and the amount of support Kohl's that having an everything else which is old boats, said good I. Think so why we're going. Here are the podcasting Stat Guru. but What what number of these podcasts will quote a sort of survive? I mean lots of starting up because people bedrooms when I go back to work and things you think there'll be some on jeopardy, or what sort of half life of a podcast series. Yeah, I think that's going to be interesting, isn't it? I mean quite a lot of podcasts. Don't last particularly long it. It has to be said. And you know that may be bydesign. May Be because people you know, realize that actually producing great audio is quite difficult. And you know and so therefore they can't necessarily work too hard on that I mean if you have a look at the amount of the amounts of active podcasts there while there are one point one million podcasts in apple podcasts, and about half of those are active, so that means that they've published one episode in the Pasta Ninety days so about how for the market about half of them are inactive, and that's I think actually pretty good in terms of you know they longevity of podcasting the that you know? Know half a million still being currently made. You know that said that's quite thing i. think often asked is podcasting the new blogging and you've been around probably as long as I have gone Do you think they blend It's it's not simple to do a great audio show, but you can actually say something happened and get your news thoughts out there, but is podcasting blogging I. Don't think so I mean I. Ingenuity. It's interesting. I, was talking to US talking to Turkish television last night, and you know and they were saying. Is podcasting growing and I think one of the interesting things around focusing. He's been going for fifteen years but it's been nice, slow and steady growth every single year every single year. It's been getting bigger. But what podcasting hasn't Betas is it hasn't been. A My space or a Bibo or vine? Hasn't you know a dramatically? Increased and then all of a sudden. Disappears again.

"Exclusion super donations social stigma and we must commit to breaking down the barriers. These laws can create to embrace inclusivity. That's according to justice Edwin Cameron appointed by Nelson Mandela as the first openly gay judge on South Africa's Constitutional Court in widely seen as euro for his fight to end all forms of inequality and exclusion in what it described as a very vicious circle Justice Cameron on with H._I._V.. Positive said that people were marginalized or stigmatized often don't have access to health services in stark contrast to the sustainable development goal call to leave no one behind while New York for the High Level Political Forum on on Sustainable Development. Judge Cameron spoke to lease graffiti noting that it's people themselves who are the most powerful agents for change discrimination is a terrible barrier in society and discrimination is often expressed in the condemnation that the criminal brings to marginalized social groups like people like myself came in obt. I groups menu have six th men injecting drug users six workers people with H._i._v. like myself as well living. Thing with H._I._V.. So through social barriers we prevent development we prevent progress we prevent the well being that inclusion and acceptance springs and we prevent people from being participants society through the condemnation of the criminal law how'd you the criminal laws in South Africa leave people behind will let me go back in history. The the main feature of portait apart nutriments cruelty and irrationality being based purely on rice was that it was illegal system. It was a system of legally erected barriers of exclusion separation and subordination where you could work. Where were you could live to whom you could be with were regulated through the law so we had terrible experience in South Africa of the negative effect of criminal laws in marginalizing excluding the majority of the population who black people since democracy we of course have renounced that but yesterday in the session on S._D._G.? Tin which is about equality the South African delicate was speaking about the long shadow of those is law so by marginalizing and extending here not black people but talking about sex workers drug users people with H._i._V. Menu of six with men L._G._B._T.. Populations people with H._I._V.. We are erecting barriers that for years into the future will create shadows of exclusion shadows of subordination shadows of social stigma. That's why we have to break them down now. We have to commit to breaking them down now. We have to commit to non discrimination. We have to commit to laws that are inclusive. How do we do that though the legal system? It's often a complex process. We've got involve social actors civil society. The media legal groups oops. That's why the International Commission of Jurists that's looking at the nature and effect and impact of criminal laws is very important. We have to assemble coalitions of people. We've also got to change people's minds. We've got to persuade people that these laws are irrational. They not evidence based. They are contrary evidence rethought gigantic struggle in South Africa with prison top Mbeki who didn't believe the evidence on AIDS and now we've gotta say to two people but the evidence shows that the war against drugs is hugely costly and counterproductive. You'll not just wasting money your destroying the judiciary and the police force through this wasteful misdirection direction of of the criminal law so we have to persuade people on the basis of evidence. How does the apparent trend of cracking down on civil spaces around the world affect marginalized people while the fix them very badly? Let me give you two. The examples any this week two of the most prominent human rights lawyers in India were raided the home India rejoicing and on grover. Let me give you an example from last week the L._G._B._T.. I march in Turkey was water bombed and destroyed by the police so taza terribly inhibiting effect it has a disabling effected as a stigmatizing effected as a fear inducing effect and none of that is good for sustainable development. How how does sexual orientation put people at risk of accessing healthcare when you stigmatize people when you make them fearful and ashamed of these sexual orientation instead of encouraging the correct belief which is the ticks orientation lies across the spectrum and five percent of us like me or gay or lesbian and another five percent or maybe somewhere and ninety percent of the population is not l._G._B._T.? I- oriented pointed in any way when you don't courage that normal proper sound moral belief you instill in people fear you instill in them shame you Enslin them inhibition that don't get access to hold services men who have sex with men who don't identifies go con identifies who can't rationally normally say I can seek a sexual partner but do it covertly do it outside baps marriage to someone of the opposite sex all. Those people don't access proper prevention treatment that aren't access diagnosis that don't access soft predictive health seeking behaviors so it's it's a very vicious circle. You are an openly gay man living with H._I._V.. In South South Africa will lesbian gay bisexual and transgender people have the same rights as non l._G._B._T.. People unfortunately these rights are not enjoyed in other African countries. What measures can be taken to reverse this? We have a huge problem in Africa. My beautiful continent my beautiful self injuring continent. We more than thirty countries still criminalize L._G._B._T.. People not just criminalising them arrest them beat them up terrify them just last week a South African performance openly and elaborately an expressively gay South African perform was not allowed into Zambia by government who condemned him for being gay the based way how we can do it through visibility and that's what's happening across Africa despite the terrible penalties and risks black Africans threats up Saharan Africa are saying we we are l._G._B._T.. I we are Lesbian Gay transgender Intersex and win that visibility happens you change the minds of parents of cousins of Friends of colleagues. You change the minds of the whole country. Victory and that's why we have to support local groups in Africa in Botswana a great court victory was achieved just this month when a three judge panel of the High Quarter Botswana ruled that the criminalization same sex sex practices is against the Botswana constitution who brought the case Liga Bibo Liga Bibo is a coalition of lesbian gays into six Botswanans and they also brought the case requiring government to register them as an organization three years ago so it's the Batswana people themselves who said this is us. We hear we want to rot. We are protected by the Constitution. That's the most powerful agent for change. You've been a judge for twenty five years. What are some of the constitutional advances that you've seen across the African continent and what are the biggest challenges you foresee? I think the advances of seen have been in the conceptualization assertion of Women's equality it is now much bitter accepted if not always enacted in practice that women are equal that women deserve a place in the presence in the cabinet in the boardroom in the executive management management of of institutions and organizations the challenges are think of slow tremendous inequality corruption not just minor street level corruption but criminal corruption like we've seen in South Africa where..

"Great to have you on the program. Hello. Rush gonna suck up to the host and say a day without Russia's like a day without sunshine. Appreciate that very much. Thank you. So by the way, Arizona towns, there's no state with better names of towns, like twin EROs shallow Winslow. I mean, you got that. You've you own the uniqueness of names for cities and towns in Arizona. I love it out here. Been listening for thirty years. So I have thirty years worth of questions and comments saved up where to begin anyway. Apropos today? I don't think the Bibo Biden, Bernie Buddha gauge Bego have chance of getting the democrat presidential nomination because they can't quote unquote, hit the girls in the debates or in their ads or they're accused of being mean of verbally being aggressive or patriarch or verbally assaulting an excellent point. So you know, how they'll do it. You know, this is actually very very good point. I don't care what feminism has accomplished just still can't treat a woman like she is a fellow guy in the race. You can't the metaphor going to hit the girl. So they'll hit Trump. These guys are going to be vicious on Trump. This is going to be a contest of who can be the biggest leftist, and who can be the most vicious to Trump because you're right. They can't go after Kamala. They can't go after Geneva brand, they can't go after Folke hana's the way they would like to the way they'll go after each other. But they can and will go after Trump vicious courage.

"Have you where where the host is someone that everyone trusts and and I write the wallet on the table and go through the whole thing is if somebody was pretending to be amazed faking an orgasm, we can't do right. Yeah. Can I ask you something about the lottery? We'll get back to David burglars burglar this someone else do the lottery this. This is a disparity between comedian. Okay, somebody else. Did you write the lottery and you came up with the device? So I don't wanna talk too much about the all. I don't wanna do that either. But I mean, I do, but I don't like the lottery. Trick is the way it looks to the audience like, that's what makes it the lottery trick. And and the method. I don't want. I'm sorry. That's not the the show. My question is you get a call, Nate. There's this other guy, Tim Bibo, right? He's doing the lottery trick. He's asking for six random numbers and he produces his fortune cookie. Any opens the fortune cookie and has the numbers on it. So it's a little bit different. Right? It's like every once in a while, somebody else, a friend of mine sent me a clip of some comedian, this guy's doing you or or someone's rip off your act. Somebody's ripped up your essence or they're doing a bit very similar. You sometimes you just see someone stealing a bit. Usually you don't care because people, no, that's my bit right. Like how do you feel we find out that this guy is doing a similar? I think it depends a lot on the context. I think if if they so in two thousand twelve. So I, I think one of the misconceptions that people have about the magic world is that were. Very good at keeping secrets in. I think there's this cinnabar red. Yeah, right. There's a great tradition of sharing and publishing your work in the community, and it is a way to help other magicians, but it's also a way to plant the flag on. These are my ideas. I, I came up with this stuff and publishing it to prove it right. So scientist for sure. That's my study. And the way you do that is by putting it out to the community. So people can see, oh, look at, look at. You. You stab yourself before they can stab you sort of. In in two thousand twelve. I wrote, I wrote the lottery trick book and I printed hundred fifty copies and sold it for a ridiculous amount of money. Only. I only made it a available to professional performers how much but one hundred fifty people bought it and it's gone on EBay. Now I saw one copy on EBay for eight hundred dollars thousand dollars for this really little book that explains all of the ways to do the lottery trick now and yeah, and yeah. So if you really wanna know you and you have eight hundred fifty dollars, you know about the literature. Can I, you know, I don't. I don't have any more copies, but rather just give it to you directly. But I did that because I wanted I wanted to plant the flag, right. I wanna. Never came up with this stuff and these are my ideas. Wriggling my brain. Now you just like, I've never heard that before, and of course it makes perfect sense. Yeah, but you can't just word it then then you get the prestige. I don't know how you feel about the movie, the procedure, but now you have other magicians going to your show wearing a mustache trying to figure out and shooting at me. It's really awkward. All right. Yeah, the bullet which was a real trick which didn't did who do you love Houdini as well for sure. I think who needs what? What do people get wrong about Houdini? You taught me a lot about Houdini. I think I think the way to think of Houdini right now for a modern audience that feels about magic way modern audiences. Do you should think of him more like Bruce Springsteen? That's how he was embraced by the culture. It wasn't because then a magician wearing tuxedo and a fraud coat that was initially right..

"So how did he do it? How did twenty nine year old horizon, air employee, Richard Russell who normally handled baggage and towed planes. How did he steal one a turbo prop from Seattle, Tacoma, international airport, Friday night. And why did he do this? Someone who sounded in his conversations with ground control so poignantly. Nice. His family and friends called him. Bibo one spoke over the weekend. Stunned and heartbroken may seem difficult for those watching at home to believe a Bebo was warm, compassionate man is impossible to encompass who he was in a press release. He was a faithful husband, a loving son, and a good friend. We never know the why. Why he stole and crashed a plane. But we can answer some of the how questions with aviation expert and former inspector general for the department of transportation, Mary Schiavo, Mary, we're getting to messages here. The transportation security expert Errol southers said on CBS that this is the greatest threat and aviation someone working inside. This is a huge deal, but then we have Patrick Smith who writes the asked the pilot blog, saying the average person if put in a cockpit of such a plane couldn't get a propeller turning of his or her life depended on it. Let alone take to the air. He says, this is really an outlier. Where do you fall? Well, probably between the two and I suppose. That's a good lawyer. Lee response, the answer is it depends. You know, actually aviation, modern aviation, isn't it all like it was when I learned fly. I learned fly back in the late seventies and you had to go out to the airfield and literally punch holes in the sky to get the feel of your plane. Now, all planes including this q.. Four hundred are completely computerized. This aircraft is literally managed and started by by the Fayed system, the full authority digital engine control system. So if he did any study and he said in recordings with air traffic control, if he did you did any study on a computer on the laptop. You can learn computers in the plane. In fact, nowadays, a good portion of your training, and it's approved by the FAA is the knob in a simulator sitting in on office in a lab and classroom. On a computer will. In fact, we just did a brief Google search on YouTube and you can get a million how to fly a plane to toils. Here's just a little bit of one. We'll do a four takeoff checklist, and we'll make sure that our wing flaps are up. Once we get on the runway we're gonna go throttle full open. So full-throttle we're going to k now what you're seeing there is you're seeing the dash of this plane and you're seeing everything that he's doing. This is a very different plane. This is more like what you were talking about, you know that you had it was more by feel than by computer, right? You can get these lessons. That's right. And in fact, there's one out there that actually has a picture of this plane on the cover of the software. It actually says, Alaska Airlines, it's forty, nine dollars. Now you put that realization in today's modern aviation, meaning that if you're going to flight school, you have a background check. You have to tell the FAA if you've taken any any medications. Including anything for depression or psychological drugs. But if you're working on the airfield in you, one of the nine hundred thousand US airport employees in this country. All you have is a criminal background check. You have to prove your identity, meaning fingerprints dementia, driver's license after match? Yeah. Have to be who you say you are. That's your background. So you have people that can learn to fly. The only exception would be and he didn't need this landing. I still think landing take some skill and finesse the moment he took off. He couldn't have known how to lend well, he said many times during the tape. I, I don't think I plan on landing. In other words, people are seeing this speculation as a something of a suicide mission, but you talk about how airport workers don't have the screening. It doesn't sound as if with this. Young man. And again, we're not we're speculating here, but it doesn't sound as if they would've found anything. Anyway, he even says, I have a screw loose than I don't think I knew that till now. So let's go back to stealing a plane out of a hangar..
