"Hi this is tony. Auto and welcome to bite here on the f. t. podcast network and so parenting in apocalypse. It's it's not the same way that we would do. You know how it works. Any views usually two to four minutes long but sometimes they can be a little longer. When you when you live long enough. All kinds of strange things happen very right in saying that. The greek heroes. Where the original superheroes in part because of the hopeful nature of genes vision but also because of its message of diversity and inclusion. I today on scifi talk. We had met betts. Who is a writer. A poet definitely want to talk about his poem. Godzillas better half. And he's written several books including a steam punk novel that we'll talk about as well and is actually in the process of rebooting something from the eck rice burroughs estate. Something that i'd never heard of and we'll talk about that as well. Hi matt great to talk to you. Welcome hey thank you yeah. I'm thrilled to be here. I appreciate you have me up anytime anytime. So let's talk about your steam punk thriller. I odd man out it you know. What's it kind of town why you'd kind of lean toward making this esteemed punk story. Well in to be honest. When i when i wrote i wrote it years ago and it was the first book i've really written and know sort of had no idea what i was doing. It came from a short story. And i've been sitting at two different magazines and other places and i guess good rejections. Most of them were saying you know this feels like it needs to be more so i started out having a short steam punk story. That was just kind of fun. And i wanted to explore that a little bit but but the more i i kind of got these ideas from people at put my head. I should make an indoor book and at the time i was reading a a lot of steam punks really just enjoying it and having never written a novel of epi good place to start Had i known what all would cut into that the historical art of it the mechanical part of ignore extrapolating a whole new world out of the one. We've got and i might have thought twice done something. A little bit simpler in. Maybe not that not that many more simple but it just it was. It was a fun way to sort of get my feet wet in novels but it did take a long time. I think that first novel took you know a two years. Maybe three Just because like. I said it was kind of flailing. I didn't have any Any background in writing other. I mean i enjoyed it in college. I enjoyed it in high school. I love reading. But i didn't have a degree. I didn't have any other short stories about very many short stories under my belt So you know kind of jumped in blindfolded feet first and lance type by my back and i started going to conferences sifi and writing conferences just learning the mechanics learning the tropes and Eventually got through. That gets really good advice. On from sn editors and friends and i it just kind of you know. I just kinda finished it in and found a good editor and found some other people who would give you some good suggestions on how to how to work it out and and that's kind of how it ended up you know it was Just at a love of steam punk at the at that point and and just a desire to get started writing. I mean that is ambitious building that world the loan. I can see where that would take. Some time have must be the first challenges making a believable right and and it started in. I rooted it sort of an historical. You know alternate history. Sort of waste. I was starting you know with with an additional challenge of starting with civil war. The american civil war and saying okay. How am i gonna take this book and make it veer from actual history and into my history to make it believable to make it work. You know to make it a viable world to live in and so i- through that extra roadblock fly and some of the things i use some of the things that really helped me flesh out. Characters were historical documents. My my dad's are historian for our family and so he had Some records of one of our relatives that was actually in the civil war. So i kind of used a few details from his records from his military records to you know. Fill it in Fill in some of the things that were happening in. This is fake world of my. And i kinda gave me that extra little. You know portion that extra sort of personal touch that like a a good building block for me to say okay. This is of my touchdown or these records in this This guy who would or lied about his age and actually the big shot and surviving in the civil war so that was kind of fun to pull in my own personal history and go from there for characters in.

"This is a different team and they have the staying power to got pitching hitting everything that they do a like this team a lot. It reminds me of the san diego padres in the national league. They have a lot of swag their hip. They're fun and they've taken over chicago. I gotta admit this people into the white sox number two nets. Friday is the trade deadline and major league baseball. That's friday july thirtieth and one of the big names out there is no sin cruise the minnesota twins. Dhcp aged forty one years. All the twins are out of their forty and fifty four going into wednesday. Night's game against the white sox. They've had a lot of injury. That was a really good team. They made the playoffs a year ago. But it's not happening so obviously they're going to unload some players at the deadline approaches. Nelson cruz is still raking. I mean look at his numbers to ninety five batting average. Nineteen home runs forty nine. Or there's a great chance he's not going to be with. The twin stone body can use. Deb that there are enough teams by for the play offs. Hookah plug nelson cruz into their lineup. And have this guy be productive for the second half of the season so We'll see nelson cruz with the twins. Come the trade deadline number three los angeles dodger right fielder. Mookie betts just can't get a break a marine. He's had a lot of injuries. This year had been himself but finally looked like in. Turn the corner at the plate. He was scorching hot and had a four game stretch where he had twelve pits in sixteen have bad batting seven fifty ever member. Mookie didn't go to the all star game in denver. You wanted to take the time off. Sorta recu and feel better. He came out of the All star break scorching hot would seven and hits in nine at bats all against the colorado. But then here we go again on seven nineteen. He was scratched from the starting lineup. With some inflammation his hip. And then mookie. Betts pinch fit in that game. The dodgers were hoping it was a game that the dog is lost and they were hoping that they could get an a bad out of him. But we'll have to wait and see what a season The injuries have really curtailed. Mookie betts are especially once he's got his hot streak so that's disappointing on. no dodger. fans can't feel good at this point. Here comes the big interview. Listen handler which so by. "I know he's got a ton of rbi. Baseball forty nine only has more jazz. Jazz gets on base marseille. Like it's an interesting lineup. it's a top elise. yeah i mean. I'm winning labor now somehow made no. You're verse. I made no. I'm not gonna win. No move part of i. I mean all my hair half my hitters got hurt and only one the atlanta outfielder who we will not name is out for a while but i place none of them. I have spent no money. I one hundred five dollars for a car coming from the al. I know steve's listening. I've made any moves. I'm paid that much attention. Because i didn't think i had a great team but i made no pig literally. No pitching moves until this week with johnny gray one on the injured list and i just moved tyler anderson but yeah i mean i there. I know he's not gonna runs to seventy five twenty eight and one hundred one hundred on segler trying to think of the other guy now all right so i'm not a hard time just thinking of who could have gotten to that rbi level. I don't pay attention that much. Dr behind like i'm guessing guy was thirty six. Rbi that's i mean it can't be vlad his babba to be four hundred three forty four. There's only two outfielders even on the list and this is one of them. Well when i was doing when i was writing up the twin story. Today i'm going to name a guy and you're gonna thank god cheated but did when i was looking up to the numbers say miguel to know has a fly ball rate of like fifty five percent which i thought had to be leading the league. But it's not the guy. Lean league and fly ball. Percentages tampa is awesome meadows. And i'm thinking that's a guy with a lot of power who's betting to ten metres. Rbi's rbi to sixty five. Mr karma pulls out a frigging nowhere. That's the other guy genius. Reason is found out is because an hour ago. When i was looking bad twins i saw my ball rate so i would never have guessed. He got forty five. Rb is the bab yeah. Wasn't that a stadium. Meadows does not hitting like two fifty. Now he's sitting to thirty three so that's obviously a depressed babbitt there because he's better than that but yeah i knew medicine the rbi. Then when i saw the fly ball rate in the fees. It's just you can't have a fly ball rate of fifty five percent for six months like bettas can't keep doing the so no can't so no maybe can keep doing this right this but he's going to one ninety if he does that. That's just the path for these types so all hasn't meadows the lefty hitting scenario. Now no all no. There's no way that the ryan ship problem. If you don't put up. One hundred mph top-shelf exit velocity. You can't sustain it. You can't i agree i mean i. That's that's a low batting average. Though with a tawny strikeouts. Austin meadows has to be among the leaders. Strikeouts not leading right now by the way otani is not otani is right up. There is a ton of strikeouts as a hitter. I mean i don't think he's leading the league. I think he's in the top. Might be the. Let me look it up so i wa. Your buyers is five. Strikeouts match happens not going to be much fun in stem next year was one i was thinking of but i didn't think he had the rbi eater. No i brave. I know he has the rbi. I don't know what his abbott is. I was thinking of the baltimore guy. Came back from the cancer His name oh tradesman seeming seaney has the rbi because you know because the guy mohan's gets. Yeah so i knew mansi about. I don't know what his bab you assume. Mancini hits about two seventy anyway. We're running out of time on today's show because lots of things are beeping on computers. "Turnaround because the ground ball rate is in the league the hard contact rate. Suppressing that is not a lead. As a matter of fact he's not been all that special about it. So i lean towards it. Being fluky are you. Do you think this continues or anything close to do you think that he's gonna blow up. No i don't think he's gonna blow up. I think he kind of is what he is we if we expected. Say a three fifty era with a one twenty whip. That's what he should do the rest of the season So he's a guy where you look at his trend you look at his recent trend and not his first month. I but how do you know when a picture is doing so poorly. We know to keep luis castillo. So many people have given up on patrick corbett. Who's a to start guy this week. How do you know and to give up on. A pitcher has won six consecutive starts now. I'm glad kept him around. You know yeah i mean hendrix is a little different though. I mean we think much more than we do have a player like davies mean so eventually are a three fifty three fit for davies. Since may i that's serviceable it's perfectly serviceable. And that's the right way. I would evaluate him going forward. Is that if he does. Regress to the mean here. That's the mean. That's not that bad. If it's a player like a steel as elite stuff great changeup. We talk about the balance between that in this. You've got to keep him around just based on the pure skills. If he was losing two miles per hour fastball. I'd be more apt to let them go. Those are the things i'm trying to find. If something changed especially fastball. Velocity the spin rate just tanks. Then i'd be concerned if they're getting hit by bad teams than i'd be concerned. That's why you brought up earlier in the show. So what are you doing with alex wood. Who still has fantastic numbers for the season. But in his past who starts his throne a total of nine innings allowed. Eleven earned runs and struck out four. He was six or seven. Strike out guy every outing until last week where he got lit up now to start guy this week with nice numbers and you know it's a home start against arizona. They're awful on the road. They have one road win in the road like a month and but is is i. My league is trying to peddle alex wooden. Nobody's biting on that and nobody would because last week was so bad pun. Intended or unintended. No i didn't mean that. But like you know what i mean. It's like what a guy is over achieving. And then you wait like one or two starts too long to trade them away. It's too late already. Nobody wants them. I'm not a big alex. Would believer in. It's more because of the durability the recent what do you do about the numbers though there exist k. But i don't that's the point is i don't think you can assume that in this case that maybe those two outings showed that the fatigue could becoming a little bit into play here. I'm trying to so like record data. Who has a forearm strain last three outings. He had four strikeouts over three outings covering twelve. But he but he's dealing with injuries within those outings each of those times. So that explains a little bit of the downturn. And i'm very concerned about as a guy you husband etienne that points league i mentioned i am very concerned about michael pineda alex. What ninety nine ninety one. Point one with a fastball. Velocity to starts to go ninety one five. That's down a little bit from what he was before that. So is fatigue coming into play here not throwing the slider as much. He threw eight percent of the time. Low season low last outing it's to home starts as you mentioned. That's favorable because of the ballpark arizona. Good up then. He plays a really mean team at home that i just don't like very much after this weekend. I can't believe that horrible horrible team that you root for that. He has to face in start number two. I mean i know you're angry because you're yankees got swept in a two game or by the these bird. I wouldn't read too much into that. Phillies aren't good yankees. The story here is the yankees aren't good. I didn't realize i don't watch. I don't choose to watch yankees base by watts. Whatever's on wherever i feel like our pitching matchups i but digital may you man. That's not what you signed up for and we ripped labor tours every chance we get. We never ripped. Dj lemay you not we. I'm not riding that bus with you. What you need to because he homered off narrative which isn't terribly difficult but the fact is dealing may who is having a terrible season. And i looked at his numbers and didn't see any reasonably believe that's gonna turn around. He's taking walks scoring runs. But no power no speed to sixty one batting average slugging. You got your number one and three hundred slugging. Three fifty tristen. That's hard to. It's hard to be a good baseball team when you're the yankees and you've got problems in your rotation and then two of your top three hitters. Not judge stan are not slugging it all. Yeah lemay who spent a little bit unlucky. And as i suspected checking the statcast numbers live rates down. That's all that's killing. It is got squared up the ball a little bit better. I don't think that corrects overnight. However and i am concerned about it and just there's a team white funk on here i've watched i mean you know i've been watching for three or four weeks of an and just drive me crazy every night. The team is just a mess. And then they lose luis severino so the rotation. That's fallen apart now over the past week the guy. We're going to get back in a month. Now i now. He's in the same boat. As guys like noah syndergaard. I mean. I wouldn't even bother russ stashing severino on any standard would not now. He's out at least six more weeks. And then he's got a up. I i so he has been has Cubs mets tonight. Jake arrieta you'd want once in a while. He pitches well. But you don't want them. David pearson terrible a lot of interesting alec minoa is third. Starts at fenway. Do nothing to jackson co art has to do with alec minoa facing boston. Bad match up out me. Gutierrez ariza the reds. This week to starts i one at milwaukee you adding vladimir gutierrez so the seconds that san diego. That's not a great matchup either. This is simple volume chasing in leagues. Were there's a heavyweight on just giving you innings and strikeouts. okay. I'll sign up. But i'm not excited for you know not yet. I watched his outing last week. And i was like okay but you are chasing volume. If you're exactly yeah. I don't i don't wanna do.

"It makes sixteen career combo meals and over that stretch only four players have more and i would have guessed to with them right away. Trout installing morte The other two. I would not have guessed. Maybe you've looked. Maybe haven't but you know i have i would have. I probably would have gotten. I probably would have gotten vr and not galych all right interesting that would have been. Maybe my third or fourth guests. You mookie betts last. I looked. I know this is going to anger people but movie versus alex for do go. You know it's a pretty close race last. i looked. Nobody wants to talk about that. How boston wasn't right now. Is on the way to play offs. Okay and they had a trade mukhi and obviously you know nobody wanted them to but look as an eight twenty. Seven home runs stick seals. Alex were do is a nice player. And last i looked better numbers. He has a seven ninety eight. Oh pm so it down. Now but eight home runs and four steals. Nobody would say that for do goes a better player in real life or in fantasy but they're pretty comparable statistically right now yeah offensively. Yeah by the way. The bets defensive. Metrics aren't as platinum glove worthy as they had been during the prime of his career. The defense i always come to with. Mookie betts is how a lot of his forgettable or down or disappointing. Or whatever you wanna call nitpick with him are a little bad luck influenced and i wonder whether that's going on to a certain degree the season. Yeah i mean. I don't expect them to fifty three all season long. You could make the case that this is the right time to trade. For mookie betts. Because he's not yet to fifty three all season long two homers in his last four games. The other numbers that i when i look at him now a little disappointing this season but babbitt a little bit depressed. But he's not striking out at all. Walking's fine contact fine. I look i look at his numbers lake. This is a guy who's going to have a better second half that what he's having right now. So you know you know. Maybe he shouldn't have been a top three overall. Pick but you know things are going to get better so go. Get a yeah. The the the worst part of adam has just the expected batting average is a career. Low two sixty four. But i mean he's got a lot of to seventies on that resume and as you said the the plate discipline metro metrics are just popping of the page. You know what i'd probably do. A deep dive into the quality of the pitch. Is he seeing in the first place. other combo meal since our past show brand allow of tampa bay nice player not having a nice season but again a good time to buy low on him as well not a base dealer. But he's got power saturday. Adam duvall dylan more. And the great vlad guerrero junior who decided to steal base the same day. He homered dillmore off the injured list. I believe that day Yeah sunday as nick tweeted to us. It's a combo meal with bobi shit. And then you're now for as the foot and has bad knees but he decided to steal a base in a blowout win on sunday over the twins. Were shut very good player. Top ten player for the season. Power speed scores a lot of runs. Vlad knocking him in every day alvarez nother fantastic player So anything to say about any of these guys yeah. I'm trying to see quickly. If i can find the slowest guys to get a combo meal again like we had in that previous show. The first thing i thought of with your yeah is he's he's he's not way down on the list. He's actually below average but not not in the danger zone. I don't view him. He's not wholesale. In when a cut or wilson romo c. n. like he he can run if he wants to it. Just yeah such bad knees. You don't want him to be running member for this show. It was dominic smithian right. He's never have another comedy on two days later. Tried to get who tried to get another combo which to me is more than half the battle you know you say half the battle. I is more than half to even attempt another stolen base when you are not fast like dominic smith Yes all right moving on. Let's talk about some of the pitching performances. Here's i try to navigate a new laptop which is really weird. Like everything's in a different place. I gotta tell ya sakhon. A whole routine. Computers have their own. New routine is a couple of weeks ago. yeah. I don't think people are aware. Zach davis has been doing past like month or so. Nobody wants them because he doesn't strike people out and truth be told i was trying to release them in a league where we can't just released prayers and i made moves to get to that point and now i don't want to release them outings. Aren't you glad. I never gave you that endorsement. Because you are baiting me on show after show and i was not willing to give you the. Don't them endorsement. Well i mean the past. Twelve and two thirds innings three hits which is luck because he's not missing a ton of bats but he did miss a miss six on sunday night baseball. He's walking to every game but he's allowed one home run in his last like ten starts so he's keeping the ball down and they let him go six innings or he let himself go by by being efficient and score. The game also matters but now as erase a a one and you say oh well it was like eight a couple of weeks ago. So that's how you how you fixing. Era lewis casino. You can't even think about getting rid of him. And as a matter of fact. Since may i love what i do that i type in the date and then it reverts to the beginning of the player's career area for a second ago. Great here we go since may first he has got an a one eighty six era. He's got a one eighteen whip. Of course they only has twenty nine strikeouts in those nine starts but yeah i mean that's bad. Obviously but like mirror matters whip matter exactly. That's and i mean. I think we probably would've all noticed what david was doing to correct a season if he had more than three wins in the nine starts. But if you're in also the other thing he's not quite a greg into the innings pitched qualification for.

Adam duvall Zach davis Twelve third vlad guerrero fifty three alvarez second half Alex david twenty nine strikeouts nine starts two two homers saturday fourth guests four players dominic smith four steals sunday night

"TVN radio 16 w TV end for Dodgers look pretty okay. Last night they did. They got good pitching from Clayton Kershaw, Who's Clayton Kershaw for the Peripheral Baseball fans, has been a dominant pitcher in the regular season. But then in the playoffs for whatever reason he's been really hit or miss. Like he's been hittable in the playoffs, so people are I can't come through under clutch. He was great last night, though. Hey, went six innings and allowed only two hits and one run. And while he was doing that the offense got going in the middle innings and they ended up winning pretty easily in game 183. "Mookie Betts is really really rich could see 16 teams in the playoffs. It's absolutely insane Way. See, I'm really hoping we see 16 teams plans. I'm really hoping we get that because it's a great chance for the Mets to get it. It really it's It's a great great change the mess that you just want to make it all about the Mets. I think for baseball, it's huge. It's just absolutely, man. It's a cash grab. Obviously. Bye bye. The ownership But you're also looking at it. You don't know how long this stands and you're not making money off the cardboard cutouts. Those air that's all going to your charities. Everybody Is donating that to their charitable foundations, and I'll get any parking or concessions or just butt in seats, right. It's corporate boxes aren't filled. So you got to figure out where to make up some of that cash. So that you can keep the line moving and keep paying the salaries and not having to furlough or dismissed giant chunks of staff across your organization so huge for fans because a number of cities as we've already seen in September's get excited just because you have a sniff. An opportunity. There's a whiff of what is that out in the distance that maybe the playoffs? Oh, let's go That way. Now we actually get full in and you'll have activity at the trade deadline. All of these things are. It's a beautiful time to be alive and its national hot dog day. Nothing. I'm a hot dog guy, but I don't condemn those that do it. Go ahead. Lather it up. Get after it. Ah, this is the time when everybody thinks they can win. You have so much, Ah, optimism. It's like the spring in the middle of the summer. It really is a fun time. And look, you think about getting eight teams in each Ah league into the playoffs. If that happens by the beginning of business tomorrow, it will be awesome. Awesome. Awesome. I'm already getting a lot of heat from twins fans because I put out on Twitter here on my 18th and each lead to make the playoffs did not have the twins making. You left them out. Twins 100 games last year, they added Josh Donaldson, but there's gotta be one team that doesn't perform up to snuff. There's got to be one sure fire team. That you think okay, that maybe it just doesn't work out for them in a surprise, and it's got happen to somebody, and so I'm picking that it's going to be the Twins did that that That's what it wass. That's all. I mean, you might have usually want to curry favor with your boss. I mean, that's not helping you. No, that's true, But I have said many good things about the Timberwolves and Kevin Garnett and the Vikings. So Scotch beer should be just fine. Love the sale of the team. We talked about that a lot. We celebrated the old ads for ESPN, the magazine that Kevin Garnett and Stefan Marbury had done. You could look him up. We can't do it now. But all that is good things. The financial terms of the deal were not announced initially were starting to get some information on that from a couple of people like Ken Rosenthal, in particular from MLB network. Suggesting that he had a source that is worth 365 million on top of the 27 million parades of $10 million salary bets will earn in 2020 so 27 year old Betts has got a windfall of cash, now 12 year deal through 2032 for Mookie Betts. And it is a head scratcher to some extent like during this pandemic, where You know you're trying to hold on the cash, and the doctors say no, We're going to go full commitment on on this player, and Mookie Betts is a special player. He is a top 10 player for sure in the big leagues, and the Dodgers are going to have him as one of the cornerstones for the franchise. Thoughts from Jon Heyman, also charming and that he's still working on this story. Eventually baseball and the union are re engaging on the possibility of expanded playoffs for this season has to be done before first pitch 25 hours from now. But there are seems to be optimism, hope. I was to go from 10 playoff teams to 16. What is this? A Twitter conversation. Tyler was like this is something that should have been negotiated and done before the players even came back on the field came back to baseball in business. What is this? You know this is something that had to have been done Probably two months ago. If you were going to expand a 16 teams, that's a sizable jump. You're going from what 10 to 16 So you are Adding another 66% of your of your AA playoff teams. And to me when you add that many teams and you're looking at the playoff bonuses and all that stuff. That's a lot of money, and that's a big decision that needed to be made a long time ago. We'll talk more about this during under the hood. It's seven o'clock at seven o'clock will because we're going to run out of time here, But we have talked about this that baseball, you know if you're trying to expand the baseball playoffs, this is something that should have been in the works as you mentioned way before. "So than or ballpark. All around us more. Not Johm our all those guys. Back in the day but Young twins That could be A GIG OF VALUE TO Where the World Series? They beat play money right now. Yeah and they. I think with that offense we already had the most home runs and Major League Baseball last year. Minnesota twins and then you add Josh Donaldson and Company to that lineup. It's GonNa be scary scary there so but as far as what? The Red Sox are getting on this friend before we start diving into possible ramifications throughout the league and the trade. The Red Sox are trying to give their new management. Some flexibility they finally fire are hired. Ron Reinecke today. Apparently it was what the other news. Yeah which I thought was honestly for where their team is going a rather good move on their and I'm kind of upset about it. I want to plug in the red sox so as far as our team a somebody that's gonNA find a way to more or less. Get all the baseball guys that they do have after losing bats and price Reynecke Guy. I think that could live fire under the remainder guy's ass and it's not that they're losing. Everybody is a team. That's still going to have raphael divers who emerged as one of the best hitters in the American league basically last season or at least a doubles machine. Zander bogart still Andrew Benintendi. This is Oakland offense. That still young and has a lot that could go right for them but they also took a giant hit. Losing a former. Mvp and face of the franchise in somebody like Buki Bats. Aw Man I mean it's not stretch at all to see that movie. The last two maybe three seasons has been the second best player in baseball right behind. My Trout Mookie betts same talent and I if Boston Red Sox fan and beyond belief but they actually pulled the trigger and just did not want to pay. Mookie BETTS BECAUSE JD. Martinez would be. Were probably I would imagine with another good season the opting out of deal after next season. So you can use that cash to get rid of this. Thinking here prayed which doesn't make any sense to me so apparently the exchange numbers before this deal happen. The Red Sox came in at at believed ten three fifty or three hundred something like that and we came in at twelve four twenty. I believe so. There's already discrepancy there. So why do you think getting rid of that to get RID OF DAVID PRICES SALARY? Which is a law. There's a lot of money committed David price over the next three years. But why do you think mookie? Betts will come back to you if you didn't value them as much as he did. You had them if signed him and find a creative way to get rid of prices money that way. I don't know it just seems like a really backwards way of doing things. Because that's what people say people think that they're gonNA use the money saved from David Rights to try to resign. Mookie betts when he's a free agent but who's to say he's not going to be signed with the dodgers star in Los Angeles beautiful weather all the time and you were staggering tax right right. I completely agree so this is a very good chance. He could just fall in love with Los Angeles in research with the dodgers so this could backfire massive. Wait for the Boston Red Sox and hey coming off all here for it buddy. I'm here for it so being in New York. There's a plethora of Red Sox fans here and I know there's plenty of up in Toronto. Is I had a bunch of my friends. That are die hard red sox fans and honestly they are not even heard about. This whole thing is they. Didn't think that mookie betts ever had a chance of signing for that long term. They thought what are the other he was going to be gone and they wonder in. This is coming from a few people I know they wonder how much Buki bats is actually a flash in the PAN. I don't see that but I can see the argument enough to know okay. Maybe they seen something because they watch more. Mookie betts than I do because alls I see is a sportscenter highlight reel or when he's disturbing Jay's I mean I go back and look from start at Twenty fifteen so I'm GonNa Throw Twenty fifteen out the window try. It just started a two thousand sixteen. He had an eight point three F. Four two thousand seventeen went back down a little bit to five point three then. He had the insane twenty eighteen year. The Red Sox won the world series where he bat four three forty six four thirty. It'll be a one hundred eighty five way. The reds create plus and a ten point four four and even six point six last year. It's kind of hard to replicate at ten point. Four four season and six point six. That's aimed at the elite level. Stuff he's been in the league level player for three of the last four seat and so I mean I guess I don't know I kinda floored by my friend Yeah I I they also saw was two thousand this money that they can spend and spread out this the other catch. Maybe they go after anybody like that and they complement his team to the tune of what really brought the blue the Red Sox those world series in those years was really collectively spreading out the talent especially their most recent world series. Win Right Yogi Batson. All the company were emerging but in all reality. They're big star on the team at the time was jd Martinez so as far as who you just took it and wrote an open check for. There wasn't the previous Red Sox. Let's throw money at everything and get Manny Ramirez and run away with it. Yes they had like. I said Chris Sale and company but I that's the other thing a lot of them. Just don't know what the hell do Chris Sale. So that's the next red SOx probably between him. There's a ton of money committed Chris Sale. And is he really going to be the Chris? Sale that you think of when you think of Chris sale or is it going to be random wildcard? That can't make it all the way through season. So maybe they turn around and spend more of that money on pitching than somebody like bats right. It's a fair question as man. We really starting to see Chris Sale Labor for the first time in ages. This patsies. I mean you got to only fifty one hundred and forty seven innings and four point four zero. We are a it was not good for sale. I mean some of that seemed like bad luck based on its fan grasp pages field in fielding and pitching was down three point three nine so that significantly better even still just on the circuit. When you're looking at you like shit. What happened Chris? Sale so Maybe arms about the fall off like that deliveryman. I'm surprised that he hasn't had a history of arm issues already. But totaled. Yeah so but then again. Maybe it's an odd thing. Maybe he's report sell two point. Oh so but anyways let's talk. Some of the fallout here. Before we dive in the exact pros and cons thing that you want to do here between the Blue Jays in the now look red sox falling out for the American League in general especially the American League is what does this do to your wild card picture Brennan panicker. Ooh That's a good question because I'm not even sure risky back. I had the red sox in a wildcard spot to be completely honest with you I mean going through it now. I think that completely eliminated from from the conversation unless some people get hot and stay hot throughout the entire season but I think it definitely opens the door Craig for potential bluejays at Red Sox to be battling it out for a third place. Maybe the race of a bit. You never know maybe second place I mean. That's getting optimistic. But in the whole picture I mean this could open up the white socks taking big jump forward And being a wildcard team or it could mean. That wildcards are coming from The American League West and maybe the American league central. Maybe the Indians could get in there. Who knows I mean it will adds up to some more winds for the The case when they play Boston But I I think it just puts the Red Sox I talks not in the playoffs conversation at the right now. I mean it's still a good team. They still got some good players but he disliked U. S. player. We'll have some superstar rate pitch innings regardless of David Price. Lujan definitely needs to be part of this conversation. As far as David price goes regardless of what red sox think fans think of him? This is a guy that still put an almost two hundred innings the last couple of years. So it's the guy is eating up innings no longer taking up those innings that is now going to all of a sudden shift. Wait to Chris. Sale and company for guys are already like we were talking about a minute ago having fatigue problems. So there's going to be a stand up thing for the red sox here for them to be. I still think on paper there at that. Same Level as the Blue Jays and the raise but I think the team that benefits actually the most from this whole situation in a wildcard picture. All son is the frigging Chicago White. Sox Yeah I don't I don't disagree. I don't at all agree. Because the Cleveland Indians were regarded. They still have ridiculous. Pitching even after trading corey. Kluber that that offense just doesn't strike me as anything special in the fact that that lindores allegedly still being shopped. I'll believe that when I see it right now. This whole Buki bats thing is putting a screeching halt to any other offseason moves until it is finally signed off on Apparently the MLB is getting really pissy about that But as far as this goes to the Chicago White Sox all of a sudden the team in my opinion there. That's still all the Blue Jays that just had that next striking spot that they were on the outside looking in maybe unless things went right but they had the right signings the offseason that really filled in their gaps and I can make the argument that they filled in the gaps a little bit better than the Blue Jays in certain things because they had some of their talent level on the young side. Wasn't anything like what the Blue Jays have. And I think that's where we're going to segue into the next part here brandon and seeing you're gonna be kind of the next couple of weeks was your idea. I want you to run with it and you can host this piece nobody. I'll do it. I got to end with a day without art for the next two weeks. It's always good on my idea. Craig where we hopped on way got talking going through the agenda. Rundown was now gone. Why don't we go through onto each depth charge and see on it like well? I obviously be biased to our team or game vice to the Blue Jays. But we'll do. I best take a neutral fence perspective on choosing who has the advantage at each position So with that. Let's start going through. Where do you WanNa Start Craig? I'll let you start. Do you want to start with the bullpen rotation or do you WANNA start position players starting with catcher? I think we start with the pitching first period. Care if you go bullpen or starting pitching but I think we need to literally hit with a bang which is what the Blue Jays fans are here for. That's true and the Big Bang. This off season was on the rotation side of things with Rio. So let's kicked off so craig if you're GonNa go through and had your choice between right now. This is how the Blue Jays Steph. Chart Goes Hundred Review. Tanner Roark Matt. Shoemaker Chase Anderson and Ryan Baraki as the top five versus Chris Sale Water Rodriguez Nation of all the David price before..

"Mvp ONE YEAR. He was fantastic. So it's unfortunate the way his career wins but man. He was a fan favorite and I remember in the World Baseball Class. They can do that tonight. The one year that it was in Toronto I bought a surely the adjusted more no World Baseball Classic candidates. There was one of my favorite jerseys ever. Just because I loved more dough at the time the guy was a perennial just talent and I think you're right. With as far as some of the some of the luster all of a sudden was gone after that concussion but the guy gets still district and mash at the plate and what a first baseman. The biggest thing I've had about what he played in during his time as he got lost in the wash it with a lot of those other insanely good first baseman that those that age and it is what it is but as far as comparible players I always thought Justin Moore no was a more powerful John Olerud crazy. It's not far off the swings. Where you early similar if you look at the feed and everything. They always batted three hundred. And you know more and more in the Ballpark in home runs verse older. It'd probably be into the fifteen twenty s but oh my God is watching the two of them play. Baseball was just quintessentially. Awesome and watching Duane Ward. Is the other hall of fame -ducted here? Kat come watching him come out of the bullpen. To this era out in the world series. Those couple of years was just amazing. It's like nothing can stop them. So I I'm jealous you got to see all those guys. I truly have gone taking everything you say and I will agree with everything you. I'm noticing this as like a twelve year. Old Kid Dude. It's something special about watching those guys play ninety two and ninety three and literally whenever they happen to be on. Tv here in the states. It was must see beaver. Made my dad and I and it was just great that the playoffs and the world series and everything those years and like I said watching Duane Ward as most through major league hitters is beauty the only thing that sucked as far as honestly. This is a guy that could have been one of the best closers in the game. I think but injuries arm problems. All sorts of things combined piled up on Wayne War as well. But that's unfortunately how the game goes guy. Didn't they had common key when we would set up for him right correct and the to the end of the game? There's a reason and ninety two. We just rolled over. Everybody say if you have to wait word and Tom Hanky based on what I've heard about both of them And watched both of them that That topic to elite closers at the back end of your bullpen essentially awesome. Yeah bluejays fans for the younger millennials out there. I know like I said I'm dancing on the line. Thirty five or I'm just old enough to remember but if you can youtube footage of these guys pitching you're going to be an all watching duane ward. Go and same thing with Donald. There was a point. Brennan that when Ted Williams was interviewed the Ted Williams Red Sox insanely good last guy. Hit Four hundred Ted Williams. He said if anybody might be able to beat his match the four hundred batting average like he did. He said it would be John Wall rude if he was just a little bit faster on record so good stuff but that's how good of a hitter John was. I'm trying to load up. It's fan graft page right now. Just in our Jonah Law and talked about it so he was his highest yet. He came close one year. Three sixty three and three seventy no. No that was And on the Eighth Day Ninety three days had the best three hitters in major league. Baseball is Janelle rude with some insanely ridiculous. Godley meriva batting average. Then Paul Molitor and Roberto Almar Jon Ola Rude in nineteen ninety three had an on base percentage of four seven three. He was almost on base half the time. That is insane. Yeah so like I said watching John. Olerud hit was a thing of beauty and there was a reason in two thousand one that only not only each euro went up handle. Mcdonnell was on that team. That was the most winning team in Major League baseball season. If I recall right is the two thousand and one Seattle. Yet you're right but the other one mariners. What was at one hundred sixteen one hundred thirteen? But that's a that's a Ken. Griffey junior lists mariners to it was insane. The see that all of a sudden you know you get John Wall rude and each row in that line up. And there's just hit parade. Going on Alex Rodriguez so it was what is but like. I said there if you want to study hitting especially if you're a left-handed here just go take checkout video. John this guy rakes so anyway right and show we dive into the topic of the hour. Oh let's do it like crack up with the major league. Baseball News and WITH POSSIBLE FALLOUT TO HELPING TORONTO. A Blue Jays. Mookie Betts is close brandon close to being traded to the Los Angeles dodgers with teammate. David price and a bunch of cash apparently tonic. Just boom banked four the red SOx in a three team trade with the Minnesota twins. Those are the two players go into the Los Angeles dodgers. The Boston Red Sox get Alsberg. Do go from the dodgers. And apparently the current hold up is Bruce Star. Gas grabbed her off from the twins the pitcher and then the twins get Kent on my Ada from the dodgers. That is a pretty epic trade many proportions for three different teams. Getting really what they all want this whole thing. I think Brendan twins. Want Red Sox won the young talent and the money freedom and the dodgers get a guy that's GONNA be insanely complementary to the reigning. Ibp and cody bellinger. Oh absolutely my only question with this Craig is. Why do the twins want to part with grads? All because this day I believe last season he won over three. I know he's had a ton of injuries. Or you have had a recent injury paths but that seems like a steep price to pay for just come to my Ada. I mean it is all right but like it's not like it's worth partying with one of your best pitching prospects. They get kept my ada so out of all three teams. I think the twins even though they needed to high end guy and needed to get somebody. 'cause they they one of the main ones for hundred review and it seems they lost them to like crap we don't have a high starter say went out and got show seen. They went out and got rich hill. one other and my Ada. I mean he's not as high level High ceiling as hundred reviews. But I mean it's not terrible. It just seemed like a piece of business for the wing but I get their happy on pieces things but I think it's one of those things that it's more quality innings than they had last year. Right it is. I think that's where they're going with this whole thing but maybe the other thing is like we couldn't get Ryu so maybe we'll just go for another dodger pitcher and hope for the best. Yeah sure what now? I figured Craig. It's actually I mean if if the end goal is just to show up the rotation of a little bit and plugging my eighty three. You're looking at it really good ace and Barillot and then you brought back owed originally. And then my. It's actually pretty decent pop three when you start looking at it. So maybe it's not bad as making it up to be but still seems like a steep price in my opinion is worse case scenario similar blue jays rotation you just have good consistency throughout right and then people ridiculous. Yeah the twins. The twins could be Other outside Canada for world series champion. I'm just my rig right now. I always kind of had a soft spot for the Minnesota twins for some reason more.

"Yeah yeah actually. It's a decent signed right. It's more yeah. We saw him a forty forty one gains the Blue Jays. Craig back in In two thousand eighteen. And you know he was okay. He didn't hurt the blue. Jc actually brought no value is therefore came in at zero point zero so he didn't hurt somebody else didn't help them. And you know what if you get a few solid outings reliever and you can kind of keep that rolling. I mean you've seen some of the stuff that Patricia has even back in twenty four team. When he was with the white sox he was starting to close games for them Getting Fourteen saves in seventy three innings with a to ninety sixty so there is some talent there the actually has quite a good fastball. There so I don't mind it. They're familiar with them and clearly I guess people offered me of whispered something into the ear. Hey if he's out there might as well give them a call and bring him back because he does have a live arm. He didn't see much major league action last year. Though yeah I think. The keys of movement on his pitches when he gets that last little bit movement on his fastball. You literally see a missing bats and then the days were. That doesn't do that. That's home run balls especially in the Rogers Centre. Oh yeah big difference in day to day stuff for Jake for tricky about it is what it is and I think this is right back where we set a bazillion times on this show. There is no such thing as a bad minor league signing were Ski Brennan. He's in Buffalo. And you've got another valuable arm to come up with somebody is either. You know not quite getting it done or gets hurt. This is just exactly the kind of stuff they should be doing to fill in these little holes because there are some good chances that we're going to talk about here in a few minutes of right things happening for the Blue Jays year. Things could happen so anyways. Let's talk about some of our other. Recent past Mr Panicker Kendra Morales apparently officially announces that he retired for Major League Baseball today in an interview with the ESPN. He saw slightly frowny face. I love watching love. The person that Koenders Morales and then he was fun to watch for two years. It just hurt and I know for all blue. Jays fans the fact that most people didn't like Cannabis Morales was the fact that at Koenders Morales is not Edwin encarnacion. The only reason Craig. The only reason why morale is just kind of had a dark cloud always hanging over when he was With the Blue Jays. It's unfortunate. He's a good hitter. He really was More so earlier in his career he kind of tailed off a little bit towards the end there but in two thousand eighteen he had a better season ended in twenty seven team at the blue gave. Twenty seventeen I think you know he came in. He understood that a fan favorite Historic Blue Jay and all time Blue Jay. The on his gone and he had to fill his shoes ultimately. It didn't really work out. I mean morality wasn't like atrocious by any means but he just wasn't Edwin encarnacion and he did bounce back a little bit in two thousand eighteen and with all the positional flexibility. This front office continues to talk about Craig. There just wasn't any room for them to be on the big league roster Come Opening Day two thousand nineteen and the whole job. Jeanie Tracy thing happened. Talk ridiculous amount of years control. No he was not only was. I always loved watching kinder's morale is especially back in the day when he was wearing the Jersey. Because this guy just could rake at the plate and I hate saying this but I can pinpoint where his career started going south and is nearly certain home. Run Ball that. He somehow breaks his leg when he stops on home plate during a home. Walk up celebration. How could you go from the highest of highs to literally the lowest of lows in the matter of a second I he this guy the year before that was just destroying baseball's to the point? Brennan where he was batting three. Oh six had forty. Three doubles and thirty four home runs to barely getting the fifty one games bank to ninety at that time and it breaks his leg the following your house and time literally one of the premier up and coming talent to bats at that time in baseball and just he didn't come back. The same power wasn't is there is it was there was plenty of it still but this is a Guy. I was starting to think and you know late. Two thousand eight watching them in the minors two thousand nine when he came up. I'm like this guy is GonNa hit forty home runs and have one hundred every stickier the. Oh yeah no doubt the most ever hit the season was that thirty four in two thousand nine when he had his career highs in most categories before the injury and the L. Y. Craig he was definitely on track to have a better season in twenty ten then two thousand nine and then he broke his leg. And it's like Oh damn this guy he's GonNa be out and he was out he missed it now. After he broke his leg he was all twenty. Eleven came back for one year. He had a decent year but that was more. The Koenders Morales with the one nineteen to create plots. Like not in Detroit. Good exactly they. At least what we saw so yeah other than that. One year that he had in Kansas City royals on the world series where seemingly everything went right for that team. Countries Morales came close to bouncing back to what he was with the angels and two thousand nine hundred even everything else from two thousand ten onwards. Yeah I agree with you. It just wasn't the same for him. It didn't seem to fame. At least there's just something missing but I I completely agree at one point. I thought he was going to be the next great power hitter. They do it for years and then they could just all caught up with maybe not so much the fact that he broke his leg just age and everything slowing down and he wasn't we feel threat either and it's amazing. What not having a good foundation the plate will do to you but Brennan as far as Kendra Morales legacy at baseball goes. He's known as one of the better. Rbi switch hitters in recent memory. I think not on the level of somebody like Chipper Jones as far as switch hitters. Go Brandon. There's not been a lot of them over the last few years. And this is a guy that was gonna hit you. Twenty bombs and be around eighty. Rbi's every year. That's saying a lot I think. And the fact that he was usually posted above the two. Sixty two seventy at batting average. That's pretty good stuff at a lot of teams are gonNA miss. It is and you know why I think the one thing that we just fans can think tenders morale sore and I guarantee you think Craig because it was kind of whispered about on twitter that the reason why the Blue Jays signed Koenders Morales was because he's representing him and Louis Correal Junior. Have the exact same agent that represents them both and so who or something like that. If I recall I believe so I believe they are close family friends and he'll Kendra was each mentor to both curry. Als But mortis especially they teammates but I'm pretty sure that part of believe getting ludicrious. Junior was conditioner on them. Signing Kenya's Morales which is why did he did it? So early in the off season remember that signing was like a week or two after the world series concluded with branches. Ale started yet right. I was like okay I mean. I don't if like tempers. All actually white him It just seems a little odd that you're acting this quickly when you have Edwin encarnacion on the free agent market so. He had a few good highly team. Craig Walk us a few absolute moon shots but I think we as fans conduct we thank him for getting alertus Korea to the PUFUS. Because I'm pretty sure that was a package deal. Yeah and if it wasn't a package deal one way or the other we head avoid at first base the agent time if filled up something that we needed and he was salvageable for varying playing very good baseball. Offer somebody his age at that point in baseball the fact that he was like I said Brennan isn't eighty. Rbi guys the one year and in all reality. If you got a few more at bats in two thousand eighteen it could have looked very similar. Both years I think. And that is the slouch hat and the fact that we didn't have anybody else to play first base injustice smoke when he was just completely tearing the ball off. You know you're not going to have to really good first baseman. It's usually a lot once and haven't smoked play first base in great defense and hit the ball as hard as he did for two years. And then some make. Kansas Morales behind him also switch. It worked out pretty well. I think the Oh it was so fun. Watching Hendry's Morales actual play from first base for the first time in years because he didn't look much a train wreck as people thought it was gonna be actually held himself together pretty well when he played first base so. I got a good kick out of what he was over there. Don't they on Yankees First Baseman for this year to you got to be they were so depleted pace but like Okay you're the only the only guy here it can be One last I'M GONNA say Canadian Baseball News as far as this one goes as the Canadian. Baseball Hall of fame has announced this year's inductees Brennan. And this is a pretty cool glass. I'm happy with it The Larry Walker. He gets inducted. The Baseball Hall of fame baseball fame turns around and bring someone in the native sons and Justin Monroe are adjusted more. No and then you have John Old Rude and Duane Ward. Who are in. My opinion could essential bluejays when I think of the two of them and I still think a johnny all only wear a blue jay helmet. Nowhere where he is. As far as years with the mets and the mariners as well. It's there's nothing better than John Already. Being part of Wam go and everything to me. It's just one of those things you literally can tune into TV back then and you just see afraid of watching the five of them. Just go at it so insanely talented players coming into the Canadian Baseball Hall of fame. You had have at least watch. Justin Moore L. Play as much as he had been all for watching. I delete I believe is actually at the game where more no sustainable can catch And really derailed his season because I believe the game I was at the Blue Jays were wearing the powder blues and think we remembered him. I believe fighting in John McDonald At shortstop I think it was Johnny Mac and they were in the powder blue. So I'm pretty sure Craig. I was at that game. Which so unfortunate because man is more now did not sustain that concussion which really started to derail him. I mean he's still Hudson. Good seasons out there that with the rockies and the twins but it wouldn't have been such a stretch to say that could have been a hall of Famer If he stayed healthy is entire career because more no is at one point he didn't he won..

Being injured for thirty games does not get you in that necessarily like you have to beat him him on a per game basis two years in a row and no one's doing that. No one has no one has done that. Mukhi baddies mookie betts is the only person mike trout third worst season by per game. His worst was twenty fourteen. His second worse was twenty thirteen. His third worst was twenty seventeen so twenty. He's eighteen is quite a bit worse than his his career average per game but even that one only four players during his career have ever even matched that <hes> <hes> two of them are are mckee bats was bellinger this urine one is bryce harper so so no one is has gone gotten anywhere close to that point but <hes> i would say beat mike trout two years in a row what if someone beats him one year by a wide margin like also like in the summer of two years wealth kaz. I'm thinking mookie. Betts beat mike trout in war last year but by like half a wind or so which you know it's it's a rounding error. It's within the margin of error trout. I think was a better hitter than bets so it's were is not precise enough to actually make those distinctions really and because it was defense mostly that accounted for the difference that's even bigger error bars so <hes> betts had higher worse than mike drought last year but i am not confident in saying that that who's better than mike trout last year and in fact would not say he was just because we've seen <unk> better before and since so you would need at least multiple years or you'd need someone to blow him away one year or what if trout has a a down year and he's he's not heard or we don't know that he's hurt but he just has like a five win season or something well. Let's let's imagine a scenario where so like right now. Mookie betts for instance has he's coming off for ten point nine four year. I think trout was ten point five in a couple of more games so that's this year has a one twenty nine oh p._s. Plus <hes>.
