Amazon Prime Day: Fraudsters Take Advantage of Online Deals

"Out with Amazon Prime days. Today's the last day and other retailers are kind of jumping on board to give consumers deep discounts. But along with the deals and steals some criminals are trying to take advantage of people shopping online. Earlier today, I spoke with better Business bureau serving Wisconsin CEO Jim Temer for what to watch out for when snatching up those deals online and what you have to look out for our unsolicited emails, texts or phone calls anything that you do not initiate. They may claim you have a free gift waiting or there's a problem with delivery and you need to click on a link or give up some information. There's a real popular when our people will contact you claiming to be Amazon, and they have to fix an issue with your account. We hear people get this and they don't even have an Amazon account. And what they want is your credit card information or your login details or even remote access to your computer. What about fake websites and product photos? What do we need to look for? If we want to make sure it's a legit site. Well, first thing before you put any information, look up into the address bar and it should be https. That means it's secure or there could be a little gray or green padlock there. That's the first thing you want to look for. You also want to make sure you're putting in the accurate website. You may want to go to a story. Let's just say it's target. But a popular misspelling of target could be a scam website or cheap target merchandise or whatever it is And when you're searching using a search engine watch out when you use terms like cheap or low cost value things like that, because you're going to get a lot more of the fake websites to pop up and what they do is they take legitimate photos from legitimate websites. Flat Manu a fake website and claim they're going to sell you something when all you're going to do is lose your money. These scammers are not

Jon Hansen in four Bob Surat on this Wednesday morning, the penultimate day of 2020 and the width of the New Year with the post holiday season. Of course, there's someone trying to make a buck off you and here to stop that. Steve Burn us from the better business Bureau, Steve It's been a while since we chatted. It's good to hear from you again. Could hear from you, John as well. How are you doing really? Well, doing really well. Hope you're ready for a happy new year. And ah lot of people, of course, getting gift cards for the holiday season, some things to watch out for them. You would give cars. People try to unload them and what happens there's a marketplace for them and there's organizations out there who will take your car and sell it for you, But we have some concerns with some companies, and we have one out of Texas actually just racked up 2000 complaints about 100 in our area. Basically, the consumers are alleging that they're not getting the money that was promised after they sold the card, or they bought a car from this company didn't get them. There was no money on the card as well. So the better business Bureau strongly suggest you try to sell the gift cards yourself if you want to use them to sell to your friends and family members instead of going to a third party site. Then there's some scams out there because they have to verify the account before they buy it from you so that you have to give him all the numbers and guess what if they have all the numbers John is, you know they can catch the car pretty quickly Don't need the physical cards will be very careful. If you got one for Christmas. Make sure you use it. Don't put it in the drawer because about 6% of gift cards and that never use and that's really a high number. Yeah, So do you. You might have just mentioned this Sari is. Does your website ELISA list like which sites you trust for doing gift card online, Or do you not trust any of them Now we do have some companies that are good, So you have to check with the better business. We're doing any business with them, especially the bad ones, So they have an F rating so that we have those reports listed and for consumers to read ahead of time. Now I live for the instagram like a lot of folks these days. I do it for the Graham. I do it for the likes is the kids say, like farming. What is that? Like families. The new thing is coming up there, really? And you know for people that don't understand it. It's basically where the scammer tries to, you know, make you put some words and encouragement and some pictures that you like the item that you like to post and all of a sudden that that change the the like, are the content rather Something that is different. So, basically, they're just trying to get you know, like the post and they guarantee you or they promise you that you could win $500. You know, you know, media giveaway promoting, you know, fifth Facebook or Instagram. And basically what happens is that you like it because you want to win this prize, but there's no prize to win and they get you to like it and then basic. What happens? They switched the content later to something nefarious where you know they can get people that click on because a lot of 10,000 people liked. It must be great. Right. So if anybody problems used to like something to offer terms of a payment or winning something Don't do it. Yeah, I was just gonna say the likes add an air of legitimacy to what they're doing Exactly if you have 20,000 lights, something like a really good offer. Like when a $5 gift card People don't like it and post a comment on it. And guess what? You know when we get 30,000 like they changed the content. The 20 thing they want And there's the one about 20,000. People click this link or like that is gonna be good. So that's how this camera gets away with it. So be careful. Is anybody promising you something in return for liking something fake compromised accounts on the rise. It's increasing and just started right before the holidays with fake Amazon. You know, emails. They're not coming from Amazon in these companies are basically saying that they lacked your account. Answer suspicious activity and you need to do something quickly about it, or you're gonna be liable for it. And they kind of put the fear and you that you've got to do something quickly. You're not thinking and we call these companies up or, you know the number they provide or you click on the link. And guess what? That the scammer on the other end, Who's trying to ask you for your account number? Asking for information. They shouldn't be giving them. Amazon's not going to call you or email. You tell your counsel act, but we need your account number to get into your account. It just doesn't happen. But unfortunately, John, you know, most people don't realize that cholera deacon be spoofed a swell so you might get an email and you might get Ah, you know, call from allegedly Amazon when it's not Amazon. But there's other organizations that are doing this. The scammers are really touting on so Be very careful if you get in that somebody saying that your comments locked because that's usually not the case, Seabourn Ists, president and CEO of the better Business bureau, BBB dot organs, where you can get all these articles and find out more information. "Working the phones and the Internet. And the better business Bureau is on top of it. The president, CEO of the better Business Bureau, Steve Bernice, Good morning, Steve. Good morning, Bob. How are you? Um, about 60% on I hear that as faras. The better Business bureau is concerned since the pandemic. The complaints have About tripled. Is that right? Yeah, the complaint hipster pulled really on the online purchases in 2015. It was about 13% of our complaints were regarding that. Now, as of, uh 2020, especially after pandemic there about 64%. So you have tripled, And it's amazing how many fake Web sites are out there today? All over the world? Not just here. Of course, Tumors don't know how to select one and and don't do the research because our recent study we issue this week. Showed that 57% of the consumers did not do any research on the company before doing business with them and losing money at with them as well. So you have more of these scams because more people are home where people are online, right? Exactly more people online because a pandemic that working and shopping online as well and doing everything and again, Bob It's only 57 days till Christmas. So we are seeing the Black Friday sales already coming out in the pre black Friday sales. So the cameras actually goes, where the money that and you know the money's right now online because consumers are going there and rose and Unfortunately, they're losing a lot of money unnecessarily. Did you hear about what happened to our Ah are singing traffic reporter Vicki, She got a call from Amazon. Vicki, are you there? You can estimate on what happened to you. Tell Steve about your call. Yes. So I got a call from Amazon, saying that I had purchased a gift card. In a substantial amount of money, and then they wanted to confirm the sale. And I checked my credit cards and I typically get an email every time I purchased something on Amazon, so I never got an e mail. Never got notified from my credit card. Nothing and so he was asking me for my information. And I was like, Well, I don't know if you're really Amazon or not. So, yeah, I'm glad you didn't do anything, Vicky. Basically that we should warning last week as well. We're seeing a national increase in fake Emma's unemployed calls and what they're doing. They're trying to scare you into thinking the whole night. Goshen must have bought something or somebody must use my car and they freely give out their credit card information trying to them and some consumer actually giving out their password in their logging information. Even though they say they're from Amazon. Why would you do that? Not you. But why would consumers do that? Oh, there's a big problem with what we call imposters. And we should national warning last week would Amazon as well and they were concerned about the fake employees from Amazon who are calling consumers and it's really consumers need to do their education and not give out information freely to anybody without doing your checking. Think you did it right. You went online. You look at Amazon feet. There was a charge or anything like that. Give me my information back just so that I knew they had the information. And he said my name and then he said, this city I was from, I said, But give me my address, and he didn't have it. And so I was like, Well, they're not. Why would you be calling me that She started singing in a guy home Scared him away. So, Steve what? What's the number one scam on social media or on phone these days? Well, Basically, it's still the fake websites. Bob, I can't tell you how many calls we are getting on the fake websites that there don't exist at all, and people are freely giving their credit card information out. And what they're doing is actually the age group that our study recently with between 35 44 year old individual's freely giving out their information to them. I'm saying that you're buying things on the website when actually they have no website. They have the website, but it's faking frauds. And, of course, in the number one reason they're doing it because the offer was so Would they couldn't pass it up, And that's the key. The tip off to the rip off. You can't find the price anywhere else, and I'll send the company appears out of nowhere and says they can do $100 cheaper or $2 cheaper. That's the tip off to the ripoff are there Are there still fake stimulus ploy is going around continues to get in there to blow up the government impostors. They're trying to get information from you. They always say they have additional information for you to get Mr Matuschek faster, additional stimulus, money or government grants air Whatever it may be. The government doesn't call you up telling you the secret sauce that you have. So there is nothing that can help you get it faster, just going through the regular channels as well. And if you please check out everything with the better Business bureau, first in reported to our scam tracker Because this way we can notify the authorities and hopefully get these websites taken down quickly, But a lot of people come across scams, but They don't report it because they don't fall for it. But we need you to come come forward and let us know s O. Many people are going to be shopping online between now and the end of the year. What are the best tips you, Khun? Give us to stay safe. While we're doing that Steve was doing research on a company but also do research on the products as well. So many times we hear from consumers who bought stuff on black Friday or or cyber Monday and realized that they could get it cheaper somewhere else so that consumers you need to have find out information about the company. You're doing business with that's important. But secondly know about the product and how much it cost elsewhere. Because when you are in these black Friday sales, you can be taken by these individuals thinking you get a feel when it's actually not a sales. Actually, you're paying more in somebody else's. So that's probably tip off on that one..

"Also the better Business bureau says credit card scams are rampant this year. Yeah, if they were offering you a ridiculous low interest rates, it's most likely a scam. And they want you to instead pay upfront charges. And then you know, before you get a credit card, so be careful with all of this, according to the B, B, B, and you also want to watch out. If someone you don't watch out, you know, out of the blue saying that you they got a credit card for you. You know what I mean? Just, you know, unsolicited, that sort of thing. Yeah. And if you try to scam 100,000 people, and they do this all the time, you're going to get a few 100 that bites that, you know. You think it Wow. This is such is so obviously a scam. But you got enough people out there right to go. Wow. I'll take it, man. You got that story on are linked in page at Todd Geoffrey. So you remember the story? The parking lot, you know, with the car club and 22 people arrested guns and all kinds of, you know, criminal activity going on in that King lot of Parmer Lane and I 35 write. A lot of speculation had talked that a lot of the ne'er do Wells. They drove up from San Antonio. You know, our drove in from other cities and the same group. Well, they may have caused some problems in San Antonio last night. Police have their hands full last night when literally hundreds of drivers teamed up to shut down the highway and do doughnuts in the main lanes, even shooting off some fireworks, morning doing donuts and popping fireworks. Those are just some of the things that police saw here along Highway 90. Late last night into the early morning hours. Let's show you the video here. This was the scene along Highway 90 and 36 Street just before 10. Last night, hundreds of cars blocked off that I win the access Road to please got reports of some drivers racing. Even doing donuts on the street and fireworks were going off. At one point. Now his officers closed in on the car's driver split into separate groups. That's when the highway had to be shut down near Hildebrand into 81. The same goes for I 10. And West Avenue Now eventually, police caught up with some of those drivers, and we're told that several lights citations were issued for them this morning reporting live on the West Side. I'm Christina de Leon. Alexis will send it back to you. Wow, you go. That's un cool hundreds of cars. I mean, that's worse than least here in Austin. They weren't blocking traffic. 'False alarm' between T-Mobile and Verizon shows how competitive 5G battle is

"Hour always on culture now depends on a working grid not just of electricity but of telecommunications and an Internet that not only never goes down but constantly speeds up efficiency is our subconscious mantra and that may be a big reason behind the hot water. All three major wireless carriers are in Verizon at and T. and T. mobile have all been promoting their new five G. wireless services heard about that each wants you to believe that their service is the fastest the most reliable hands down the best. Here's one of Reisen ads from last year at Verizon building the most powerful five G. Experience for America. That's why the NFL. Chose Verizon because they need their massive capacity of five G. With Ultra wideband, we're streaming streaming posting fans inexperienced five. Thirteen trouble in most cases, those claims can't be proved, and so the courts have banned each of these rivals from boasting about their prowess and from implying that the others are the lightweights of the wireless world witness verizon the ad I just shared with you was set in Gillette Stadium, home of the new Patriots, the company stopped running that ad last November. But that didn't stop at and T. from challenging verizon's use of the phrase most powerful to the division, the Better Business Bureau that rules on deceptive advertising cases. Why did not call the phrase into question essentially because the carriers have hardly rolled five g. out anywhere yet so it's impossible to prove one carriers mostly non existent five G. implementation is better than others. There were also questions about whether the ad was implying that the rollout was far more widespread and available to the average consumer than it was in May. The Review Board called the national advertising. Division were in a D agreed with a t and t and told verizon to using the term verizon appealed early this month they lost the said essentially consumers have no idea what most powerful means in this context the claim could not be substantiated. One it comes to making false claims don't assume that verizon is the worst offender. nope. The Empty Braggadocio is a game played by the entire industry. Go back through years in you'll see that at and T. got trouble claiming that its current four G. Network was by virtue of being fast virtually identical to five G. It even used the phrase five G. EVOLUTION TO DESCRIBE ITS FOUR G service a consumer looking for the fastest cell service could hardly be blamed for assuming that meant, they'd be using a five G. Network. Three years later, most of US still use four g networks the told at and T. to stop using the deceptive evolution phrase. At and Later agreed, and then there's t mobile, which isn't exactly honest either in late August, the NASD toll, t mobile to stop claiming that it's five G. services more reliable than the others verizon had challenged that claim t mobile said, it will appeal that decision but the Advertising Review Board also recommended that t mobile needed to stop running ads in which science guy bill nye claim that verizon's five G. coverage was barely broader than the average bus stop bench that according to industry publication fierce wireless. With a widespread deployment of five G. still some time off in the future. Why would every major wireless carrier use such inflated claims in a Word Mindshare? They want to attract and retain you as a customer. Are you more likely to stay with your current mobile carrier? If you feel pretty sure that the company will soon offer blazing fast five g service. Well maybe it's all about perception perception of what's here today and better yet perception about a speedy powerful future. That's almost hear these kinds of empty claims have a long long history in the advertising world from Telco Tonics beauty items to baby products. Advertisers repeatedly tried to stake out the territory of a- best. And rivals almost always challenge those fluffy bordering on dishonest claims. So next time you see a company claiming to be the strongest most powerful fastest or the best ask yourself. Where's the evidence chances are? There isn't any.

Coronavirus scams: the science of how to spot and deal with nuisance callers

"State officials and federal agencies warn of a new phone scam Callers pose as CO Vered 19 contact tracers. To try to get your personal information with us now via Skype to discuss this is reporter Julie Appleby of Kaiser Health News. Welcome. Thank you. So what does it sound like when you get a call from a fake contact Racer, you know, scammers air Very creative. So officials are kind of telling me that there's various scenarios, but one of them goes something like this. Your phone rings. And the person on the other end says they're calling you from your local health department to let you know that you've been in contact with someone who has Cove in 19. And the person might say, Hey, you need a covert test. So sounds legit. So far, right? But then they move in for the real objective, which is getting your credit card number or other payment information. You know, they might say something like, Hey, we need that to Bill you for sending you a test, for example. Basically, don't fall for that. Some scams also come in by text, and they ask you to click on a link. Do not click on the link. You know, I'm thinking about how most scams play on people's greed of their gullibility. This is especially offensive, I think, because it plays on people's fear in the pandemic or plays even on their public spiritedness. People want to do the right thing, and they're being taken advantage of right. That's exactly right and legitimate contact. Tracing is very important. It's It's one of the key things along with No masking and social distancing that the public health experts are hoping will slow the spread of the virus. So this is this is particularly insidious. How widespread is this? You know, we're hearing it from states across the country from Hawaii to Florida to Pennsylvania. There's a national warning out from the Federal Trade Commission and another from the better business Bureau. Some local neighborhood listservs I've seen and Facebook pages air also circulating a warning. So I'm thinking about the fact that I might really get a really call from a really contact Tracer. How can I tell the difference between the real person in the thick? Okay, so a legitimate contact Tracer does not ask for payment or seek any other financial information. So that's one way you could tell. Real tracers. Do not ask for your Social security number. They will not provide the name of the patient with whom you had contact and text from these contact. Tracers. Simply let you know to expect a phone call right? They don't contain a link. So if you do, get a phone call, do a little homework, asked for the person's name and their return phone number and say you will call them back. Then check with your local health department to confirm that this person is indeed doing contact tracing. That would be one way you could kind of counter that. And if you do get a call, don't be surprised. If a real contact tracer asks you to confirm your address or date of birth. They need this information because they don't want to give sensitive health information to the wrong person. So they're trying to confirm your identity. Real tracers air going also ask you for information on where you've been and who you've been in contact with during the days surrounding your diagnosis or exposure, And that's because they need that information. Track it and warn others of potential exposure. So a real contact racers should be somebody I could find whose identity I can confirm who may ask me for personal information, but if they start trying to get money out of me, that's that's the obvious signs. That's correct or any kind of financial information. That is an obvious sign.

California governor Gavin Newsom says reports being prepared and the area secured with the entire process to remove passengers expected to take two to three days former FDA commissioner says now is a crucial time in the fight against the virus on CBS's face the nation Dr Scott Gottlieb said the next two weeks are key and he adds that the next two months will probably be difficult with the closing closing of of businesses businesses and and schools schools Gottlieb Gottlieb did did offer offer reassurance reassurance saying saying quote quote we'll we'll get get through through this this another another former former democratic democratic presidential presidential candidate candidate is is endorsing endorsing Joe Joe Biden Biden in a video on Twitter California senator Kamilla Harris threw her support behind the former vice president saying quote I believe in joke we need a leader who really does care about the people and who can therefore unify the people and I believe Joe can do that and with us right now was ABC news political analyst Steve Roberts Steve what a difference a week makes it did you anticipate Joe Biden picking up this mode the momentum this quickly no I have not I don't think anybody did I I think what we're what we're seeing though is a fascinating phenomena based on one word and that word is fear it's fear of Donald Trump and fear of Bernie Sanders Joe Biden has not been reborn as some useful charismatics move talking energetic candidates Joe Biden today is still the same Joe Biden that people have a lot of doubts about two weeks ago two months ago two years ago the difference is that Democrats have so desperate so frantic to find somebody who can beat Donald Trump that they decided that day either as a group and individually as voters and as candidates they'll camel Harris being an example of of having to rally around somebody and then choosing between Biden and Sanders the fear of Bernie Sanders is pulling the party too far to the left so there's a lot of energy around the Biden candidacy right now but in my view it's largely negative energy it's driven by fear it's driven by desperation there are not a lot of Democrats even this morning jumping up and down in Saint Joe Biden's gonna be a great candidate a great president but this negative energy is very powerful and that's what's driving this trend do you think it's now his to lose or is it too early to say that definitely has to lose end up and I think it's gonna be very difficult for Bernie Sanders to rebound here the one variable of course the one no wild card is by himself as I say he has not been report he's still the guy who can show astounding lapses of judgment he's still the guy who could make gaffes he's still the guy who can show his age very clearly he's still the guy who can appear fumbling and uncertain and in debates with Bernie Sanders and interviews it's still entirely possible for him to make damaging mistakes I think a lot of Democrats even if they rally around by they're holding their breath and hoping that Biden will get its act together and I've seen some signs a few signs of Byton improving on the stop I think he's shown a little bit more energy I think the campaign line about I'm the candidate of those who have been left behind it counted out is a defective and powerful line really echoes of a bill to written of nineteen ninety two the comeback kid although Biden's hardly a kid he's more the comeback teaser than the comeback kid and also this line of of of appealing to the concepts of dignity and civility and normalcy I think they provide a fairly stark contrast to the president who's in the oval office now but Biden is still Biden it was all of his flaws but at this point he's the Democrats best hope and it's gonna be very difficult for Sanders to capture Steve thanks for your thoughts again this morning ABC news political analyst Steve Roberts it's also worth noting that this morning one of the former "Jason with the Better Business Bureau. Now, Jason I welcome. Thanks for being here. Thank you people know the Better Business Bureau, they know that name, they know BBB, and it has an important role to play for consumers, but described that role and maybe a little bit about the history of what the BBB is been around for a hundred plus years. It'd be be is not a government agency. Many folks are think we're synonymous with the government agency. We are not. We are not for profit. We're consumer watchdog group and there's about one hundred councils across the country, but your San Antonio Better Business Bureau is spoken. Only on south Texas in particular, we wanna make sure that businesses and consumers trust each other that they're stressing the marketplace. We do see scams all day long. We hear about them many, many times. So we're always on the forefront of watching for scams as well and trying to get folks the. Information they need to not be scanned for sure. Yeah. Is this so much of a, you know, I think we're such we've turned into such a review society, if you will. If you if you go, buy something on Amazon, for example, you're going to read the reviews before you buy anything, and I and we've heard those. I'm not gonna call them empty threats. But we've heard we've heard threats from people to businesses if I'm going to call the Better Business Bureau, but, you know, by and large, is that what it's about a little bit of both a little bit of just making sure that we're, we're, we're finding businesses that are doing ethical practices that they're out there doing the right thing. They're making it right. If there's a problem, there's a consumer feedback, and the problem talk communicate. And if you can't make it right then the bureau comes in and just make sure we're third party. We just make sure that there's communication is open lines. Now we advocate for both sides. Consumer end business wanna make it a fair equitable, you know, problem solving mission but many times people come to us, and they're not legitimate complaints. Whereas, we need to have a complaint against a business in actual business. That's licensed. That's registered with the county. That is, you know, legal that do business in the county. So many times people come to us. They'll say, you know, this guy came in did some work on my house. And, you know, he left he hasn't come back to finish the work. Well, that's what we say. Well, you know. We need some information. We need all the information about this gentleman. You know, is he part of a contract companies contractor is even licensed even you know, in a capacity to do the repairs needed. So folks, just your remember that there is a there's there we are a resource for people to turn to if you do you have a problem and yes. Reviews, all day, long people read the complaints, and they see what's happening on a business. That's a good place for people to turn another, another place that they can go to review a potential business. So if somebody has a situation what's there, what is the step? What does it take us through that process? How do they need help right now? Maybe somebody's feels like they're getting scammed or the situation where they're being taken advantage of. Yeah, what's their recourse? Meaning dot org is where people can start you can start there by looking at.

"Two. Back on the Tom that pre show. That's him with Michael Jackson. Right. It is. It's funny you all started li- segment about talking about selling snake oil. That's exactly what this video was. Is that right? Selling snake oil and elixir and Konin people. Okay. Remember that videos realize Levy on. Yeah. They should've Paul. We got a problem here. Yeah. We need to talk to you after show tonight, but I didn't realize I was reading the history on this video that west Arben superstar Harry dean Stanton was in this video. Oh, is that right? Also, I, I didn't know that I'm gonna have to go back and watch and see where he was. That'd be need. We're, we're we just got a few more minutes left in this segment, where with have Heather Clary of the Better Business Bureau. In this day and age, the biggest scams are the financial ones that we, we see against clients of ours, or clients of other people that maybe you're not well, informed. What would you say to retirees people who you know, have their money set aside, and, or living basically, on fixed, incomes, that kind of thing? Well, you just have to be careful how you spend it, and what people are telling you, there's different ways to use your retirement money. Of course. We'd love you to check out the investment company to see if we have a record on them, we'll ask you to maybe check with the department of financial institutions, or even the SEC to make sure there hasn't been any problems. Yeah. Another thing we're hearing about a lot about Thomas people. Call and ask us about reverse mortgage. Oh, yeah. And we can't really advise. On how those work. I mean, we kind of know it's you kinda give you saying your house, and they take the money or, you know, but whether it's right for you or not another story. There are people advertising it I think HUD, we actually look it up on housing urban development has a, a number of people can call to get hooked up with a reverse mortgage, HUD, counselor rather than the person who's advertising on television. Who, of course, want you to think it's the best thing since lie spread because not be right for you. So that's another one. We're hearing a lot about just do some research, and for heaven's sake. If you're going to sign something, especially if it's a larger state, and you might even have a lawyer look over it, you know, but having a trustworthy person, you can sit down with face to face. Right and anybody who's gonna tell you risk free or. Oh, don't worry about it. And this kind of thing is the stuff you wanna run away from and we'll often here. You'll hear things where it can make a difference. If the guys working only on commission. A lot of firms don't work that way. -solutely. Yeah. Because what is he going to tell you to try to get as much money as he can out of you or she? That's right. We're our firm. Just as a matter of record is fee fee-based. We don't charge commissions of reverse mortgages can be of a pretty complicated maze from I've looked into the and I haven't yet found one that I think, is something you should do. I remember one woman once asking about one and about a company that was selling them. And then she said, well, I talked to them, and they said, but I would run out of the equity by the time I was eighty or something like that. And what if I'm still alive, what exactly goes the mortgage as to be paid? Yeah. And then they've got it. Where do you go trial? So it's just stuff. You have to look at carefully. The Better Business Bureau is not attorneys. We're not attorneys or lawyers, but we do try to help you get good information object. Information about various businesses. The scams that are out there. If you don't know where to start, you can give us a call..

"Into your Bank account. Maybe I don't know if that's the right word to use with Heather Clara, head of the BV getting into your own Bank. You ever get people reporting scalpers? This guy sold me tickets that didn't exist. Well, now, we'll get that if they try to buy them online from some. Yeah. And we talk about this, especially during NCAA basketball playoffs, because, that's when of course, the cats are always going somewhere and we usually issue an alert about that. Don't by fake tickets. People oppose these on Craig's list, or somebody's faces marketplace. Here's what tickets. Now, if somebody local on, they'll meet you locally, and you change hands with the stuff. That's one thing somebody want you to wire money and I'm gonna give you these tickets. Yeah. You know, no, these people from Adam, so that can they'll scalpers. That's a police problem. You know, although then you're telling the police well bought tickets from a scalper, and I think that's legal. Fact, I think I've seen stories in the news here, where I think it was a man in his son that were arrested for buying tickets. And then they got in they were brought out because they tried to get into a ball game with fake tickets. And they didn't know they were fake. I mean, really, you know, if you're buying from individuals on the street you're on your own, and that's a good point to bring up because sometimes people call us and they'll say, why would file a complaint against my neighbor? They won't cut this tree. That's hanging over my fence and oh my go-. Well, we, we are the Better Business Bureau, not the better neighbor beard. We cannot handle complaints against individuals. So, yeah, the whole buying online. That's exploded. People buying and selling on Craigslist EBay, their various social media marketplaces, in many times, those go off without a hitch. I've done it myself. It's, but that can be problematic. If you're not careful never wire money, we've heard people said, oh, I was going to buy this iphone from someone and I wired her the money and I never got the iphone. Yeah. I can't imagine why you don't know where this person is now out your money. Exactly. So those are a lot of this is just common sense. It is everybody has a bad day when they answer the phone or Email, they'll call up say, I never do this. But this is the one time they did answer the phone or give some information or by someone at the door like okay. Well, we're not here to, you know, shake our finger at you and laugh at you. We're here to try to help you mitigate the situation if something's happened if possible, and then go from there head, have you had somebody call you and say, I accidentally responded to an Email from the rents of Bob way. As to wire him some money because he was stuck in Norway. And have you ever had somebody, you should bring that up, you'll Nigerian letter scam Germans used to come by letter and facts. And now it's Email actually heard from a couple of people lately, who forwarded us emails that they were exchanging with someone the scam goes that they someone's died in this country, England or somewhere, and they, they can't find any of their next of kin and you have the same last name. So we want to transfer that money to you. And of course, we need a percentage of that one guy sent me a whole string of emails. He had with this barrister over in Nigeria or somewhere. Well, we do need a fee and you need to keep this on the q t don't tell anyone. Yeah, they'll, they'll bleed you dry and you'll never get any money. I mean money if you had to send money to get money in about any situation is not a good idea. And I'm sure that's the same thing with. Well, you have to invest money to get some money in that regard. Guard even that you have to be careful. That's right. Oh this plays into what we do so much because it. You have to be suspicious of lots of things a healthy suspicion. No be paranoid. But a fi. Yeah, you want to verify verify. We say. We had a fellow call this week is upset with some investment advisor indicating they. Well, we've lost everything on this. They told us it was risk-free. Those are the two biggest no words in the whole. No. It's not something you say, are you? Sure, no one should say, risk free. We know that much we referred him to the department of financial institutions and see if what was going on was really true, what he said and go from there, but you do have to be careful about that. We would sometimes get calls from people who have received a call from someone wanting them to invest in oil and gas wells that kind of thing. Right. Those cold calls for that. I think our legal. Now if I'm not mistaken depends, if you're on the no call list. Yeah, that's true. The do not call list, which everyone tells me doesn't work anymore and it does this certain extent asset about the do not call his six times, and I still get calls. Well, eight you don't have to keep signing up for it. It doesn't expire, right? Unless you've changed your number. Think about all the legitimate businesses that are not calling you because they are obeying the law. And so that's right. So that list the people selling your windows or. You know, water purifiers or whatever they might be calling. But it's the scammers. I don't care. They're hiding just like I tell people just like you go out here on the interstate, and it says fifty five miles an hour, and you're doing seventy five you're going to get away with it. Unless someone sees you Mr. officers ease you pull over and can catch you same thing here. They can't catch you. They're going to keep doing. That's right. So it's interesting the history of, of how the Better Business Bureau. Got started medical quackery and the promotions of nostrums and worthless drugs were Mon the most prominent abuse Neko. They'll snake oil salesmen. Yes. Yeah. That's a and you know what that same stuff is going on today. Just stuff the showing up in your Email box, it having mail back, then, but ec- old advertisements online or we might see them in some of these old. Old magazines or whatnot. You know, this is this, this fluid will make you healthy hill. Make your hair grow same things going on today. That's right. It's just a different venue. Exactly. And if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is right? And that's why we're glad to be able to be there everyday to turn on the lights and answer the phones and help the public or answer your emails and update our database so that you can check out businesses with the Better Business Bureau before you use them because, you know, you wanna keep your money and spend it wisely and we couldn't do that without the support of our Better Business Bureau, credited businesses, who help keep us going as a nonprofit, I'd like to also mention that, if you own a business, and you'd like to see how the Better Business Bureau accreditation can help your bottom line, and you can help us keep doing what we're doing. We'd love you to call us on Monday. And we see if you can qualify get on board to get the benefits of that is exactly. Yeah. Just like do pre-financial group is. Thank you for that. Oh, not at all. Glad supporting us. Yeah. Yeah. Any business? That's trying to support us and do right by their customers. That's what it's about. Sometimes people say this just to give you a chance to refute this. Well, the Better Business Bureau rights businesses good, who pay for the membership fee. Yeah. We get that a lot. Yeah. That's not true as I stated earlier in the show. In fact, if you belong to the BBB and believe you me, there are businesses out there, who would love to pass a bunch of money, so they could use that logo, and we're not gonna let them because they don't qualify. And this is true in many other say, but when you go through the qualification process for a business, what do you what kind of background checks? Do you do? Well, we're looking for things like we're checking your secretary of state filings. If you have any to verify the time you've been in business, we're looking at our internal database to see if we have a file on you have there been unanswered complaints is the name of some of the principles popping up, which happens once in a blue moon with another business that turned out to be thrown out of the BBB, because of unethical actions really thing. I mean, we're not doing police background checks or anything like that. But. And of course, our board of directors votes, every month on approving the the members. And if as long as you're conducting your businesses best you can, and there is an investment fee when she helps us keep running the running our business, our doors and lights and phones and monitoring the marketplace for advertising issues and a lot of people find that a big benefit. I mean, they're able to put that BB logo on the door. Use it in their ads put it on their vehicles. You'll see them around town plaques in the business you walk in, you know, you're dealing with somebody who says they're going to do what they say they do try. Yeah. And there are some businesses don't qualify. Now, you say, well, you're going give a better grade. Nope. Because I can point to bunches of businesses that have a abor a ratings be plus ratings, eight plus ratings that don't belong to the BBB they might have been invited declined. They might not ever have been invited. They might have belonged and then decided they didn't want to do it anymore could be any number of reasons. And we do hold the BBB members to a higher standard because I don't meet those Sanders. They do risk losing their accreditation. And it does go on their record. So what are some of those higher standards? Well, you must you must promise to respond to customer complaints one. Don't just ignore it their businesses. They'll just ignore it. Oh, yeah. You do especially in our business customer complaints becomes a matter of record. We don't want you to just over and give the give the consumer, whatever they want, because we know there's two sides to every story. Right. You know there's the customer, sometimes there's three there's the customer side, there's the business side. And there's what's really happened. That's right in the middle. So we're going to check that, and make sure that if there have been any complaints. Did you address those properly? If you're a licensed industry, do you have that? Do we find anything else that have popped up on the radar about your business attorney general actions, things like that, and anything of that nature, and then, you know, and that's why we then put it in front of the board of directors. And if any of them have heard anything about the business, but many times, there's not an issue, and we're happy to get more people on board with us and, and help us do it. We do and, and fight the schemes and scams and keep the money in our communities, instead of with the crooks try one. It used to be evidently in. Oh, eight oh nine the be BB rated companies either satisfactory or unsatisfactory, and then the beginning of nine it looks like you moved to new system of writing from a plus to, yes, yes. Because satisfactory unsatisfactory was just kind of abroad. Rain pass fail. Yeah. But now. There's a complete scale an algorithm used to grade points, given for things from how long company has been in business to, and this is all based on the size of the business because we will ask them, you know what are your receipts for a year. You know, are you a million dollar business or smaller business? And because people will say for instance large companies, I'll use lows for instance, they're headquartered in North Carolina. And they are BBB accredited business. Now, everybody goes lows bias things and sometimes they'll have a problem, and they'll file the complaint, those get addressed and resolve according to standards, but there might be a thousand of those miss early. Follow it with the BV with the BBB. This is talking about BBB and maybe there's been a thousand complaints over three year period. That's what we report on. That would be nationwide right over three years, and thinking how much business lows does. Right. There's not many if you have a hardware, store, and you have maybe sixty regular customers. And you're getting fifteen complaints in a year, that might be a little more serious. But again, we want hear both sides. There's things fall for the cracks, whatever. We're just about trying to help people get things resolved. And sometimes the customer is one of those at the business wishes were someone else's customer, because, once in a while we'll get one of those I it's interesting to hear the other side sometimes. Yeah. That's all I can. The business will say, well, the customer says they will come back and finish finish the roof finish the gutters cetera et cetera. Then we'll contact the business and the business will say, well, we tried to, but her husband came out, you know, waving a shotgun at us and wouldn't let us on the property. I mean it's amazing some of the stuff you hear you know, so. Making go always. And then there are some things we can't help folks with that. We will direct them. That's another service, people will call us. And they're not sure where to start and say, well, I haven't gotten paid my last job. I left. You know what we're going to refer to the labor cabinet. We can't deal with employment matters. I feel like I was discriminated against at this apartment complex. They won't rent to me where we're going to refer you to the, the human rights commission. "Juic-. Get. Extreme. Back on the Tom depre- show, NewsRadio six thirty wwl AP several interesting stories this week. Make Mexico good neighbor again. So Trump is decided to slap tariffs on Mexico because of letting all the illegal immigrants. Enter the. Country. I'm sure that, that's something that Mexican businesses are sort of wondering about. And anyway of we got several stories. We won't really go into them today because we have a special guest with us, Heather Clary with the Better Business Bureau. Heather, let's talk about how people can. What people do and, and just the, the process that they go through when they have been dealt with not, not a scam, but an actual standing business at a problem, we out that is that is. Somehow not delivered on what they do. And let's say the business is not a credit with credited with the BB okay if consumers, and we handle hundreds of complaints every month and most of the way if you wanna call Heather to eight oh, two two eight seven you can call the studio and ask if you've got a question about the Better Business Bureau and or if you have a scam you went to warn us about right? That's where I get some of this stuff people will call in some stuff. I've never heard of before. If you have a problem with a business, people call and say, well, I wanna file a complaint and the first thing we will ask is, we'll have you let the business? No, there's a problem because believe it or not some people will have already send in complaints. And they haven't even let the business know that they're unhappy to try to resolve issues. But sometimes they have, and there's a disagreement, the Better Business Bureau acts, as a neutral third party, try to help the two parties open the. Line of communications and get the thing result. Now, if they do not belong to the BBB, they are not required to respond no businesses. We're not a government agency, but most of them will because they know people check with the BBB or they just want to, you know, they wanna give their side. They have a good business and they want to make sure that their side is heard, and try to resolve things. Yes, the consumer will file in writing or online. We have an online complaint form at BB dot org. Which, by the way, is where you can go to look up businesses. Read about scams file complaints or customer reviews and complaint. Forum will ask, what the problem is what resolution you think is fair that would resolve things we're going to forward that to the business and request their reply. And most of them will write back with their side of it. Oh, you know what? That employees messed up, we're so. Sorry, please. We're gonna come back out and fix that gutter or refund your money for the bad dry cleaner, whatever it was, and we're going to close that as resolved. Most of the time, there's a little bit of back and forth, but many times, both parties can come away, feeling a lot better. The diff-. We also offer mediation and arbitration services are BB accredited businesses as part of their accreditation in the BBB have agreed to take part in those. Yes. That's what the standards we hold them to an fact, we hold Deby credited businesses to higher standards. Because if they do not abide by the standards, resolve answer complaints, and in stay out of trouble. They can have their credit Asian revoked. So it's a free process for the consumer if the businesses in another area of the country, sometimes people will have a problem with their cable company or the phone company. Their cell phone company, a lot of those large companies are headquartered in other states, we will direct them to that Better Business Bureau, because in many instances, you're large companies, for instance, say, direct TV or AT and T, you know, they're in Atlanta, or best buy there in Minnesota, many times, those complaints are processed by the bureau, where the headquarters is. But again. Can get right to it at BB dot org and that bureau, the internet brings us all together. We can share information to help you get problems resolved. There used to be a guy I lived in Houston, Texas back in the eighty s and there was a guy on TV down there. Howard Zinder or Howard, something start with z. And he would he would come on every day and deal with somebody would bring him a complaint against a business, and he would put it on TV. Typically the business would respond pretty quickly because. They've got this coercion thing going on. That's the way some folks now, we'll say that once in a while someone files a complaint, there's a business, it's really a problem. It's fraudulent. We have no address. They're not throwing complaints and this. We will the news media will help us try to warn people about what's going on. Right. For instance, this time of year. It's time where people are going door to door offering to pave your driveway that, and they just throw some black paint and gravel on the driveway. Disappear. Take your money. Then you got to hire. Somebody else to do it. Right. We call those the travelers, it's just an example, and if it can't find them, and, and sometimes we even notify law enforcement about some of this to try to recover people's money. So every complaints different. But if somebody doesn't know where to start we encourage them to call us. We're happy to talk about it with them, and then tell them how to get a complaint going if that's necessary and go from there, Heather did. I see was it last week or two weeks ago that there was a scam going on. Not directly involving K you. But people receiving phone calls that take you was gonna shut them down. Yes, you did we issued an alert last week because I heard from at least two or three businesses one was a church who'd received a phone call a robocall indicating that their Bill was unpaid. And a technician from Kentucky utilities was coming to shut off their power in thirty minutes unless they paid over the phone in one of those phone scams that uses act. Now, high pressure scare tactics get you to act before you can investigate. Fortunately, these people did not fall for it when they called the number back that was left for them. It had the same greeting as you get when you call the real Kentucky. Utilities. That's what so slick about it. Did. They did. Now, the one was very unnerved. She was searching her records found they had paid all these one person wasn't even a customer of K. You wish tells you what the con artists will do. They will just cast that knit. It was hurt in Nicholasville. So we're not even customer of KU. But who knows who they're going to hit because they know a business does not need those lights to go off. They need them on keep the cash registers on and everything else. So that can be very scary, and we did an alert out about that. And then we heard from someone in southern Kentucky that next morning. Who was a south Kentucky ECC customer. He lost two thousand dollars to that scam because they want them to pay with untraceable methods reloaded cards that you buy and it's just unfortunate. And the way the business climate is anymore. You know, your margins can be pretty slim you can't afford to lose money to that there was no way to help him. Get back his money, especially with a scam like that. I could see where senior citizens would free. Out, especially with heat coming on during the summer, and I will say that they generally don't run this scam on consumers. It's been known to happen, but they mostly target businesses. So we felt we should put the alert out because who knows how many businesses, we had not heard from so that the word was out, so people would not fall for it. Businesses get scam to or the target scams. Absolutely. We're there to help them as well. There's a thing that goes on. I wanna talk about it a little more. It's called number spoofing and. Where there's a kind of an upsurge in it. I get. And you do too, because you told me the other day that you do I get calls frequently from, from numbers all over the country on my cell phone, where they're taking over somebody's number and call on you to get something. Yeah. That's one of the con artists will do to. They never put their own number on there or they know people are blocking numbers or they may not answer. So they will use their computer technology to place these calls, and many of them will use your own area code. Yeah. The call that neighbor spoofing even down to the first three digits of the phone number being the same as yours. I get those I don't answer them because I know what it.

"A little bit of background the Better Business Bureau. This is a Cording to their Wikipedia page. The Better Business Bureau founded in nineteen twelve is a private nonprofit organization whose self described mission is to focus on vanishing marketplace trust, it consists of one hundred six independently or incorporated, local BBB organizations in the United States and Canada coordinated under the council of Better Business Bureau 's in Arlington Virginia. They're not affiliated with any government agency. That's something you need to understand exactly too many. People think we are. And we're not I often say when I give talks to groups p people will say, well, I didn't get my money back, or you didn't get my complaint resolve because they use the business that wasn't very coming in all their complaint, where my tax dollars going, and I say, well, when you figure that out, please let us know because it's not going to so there are a lot of people who think that it's a myth that goes around, but we dispel that quickly the whole thing about the Better Business Bureau, is that it's a the businesses that qualify and get accepted to the Better Business Bureau. Meet our sandards. It's a voluntary thing and our whole our whole mission is to promote advertising, truth and advertising and to help consumers and businesses get problems resolved. If there are any on a voluntary basis without having. Ving to us court systems, right, government intervention. Now, if those things have to come into play later, great, but many types, that we have a very high complete resolution percentage with is in the eighty percent range, and so that's, that's a really good. That's a really good thing for people to know because it doesn't cost you anything the businesses that belong to the Better Business Bureau. They haven't investment fee that allows them to advertise our marks and to use our services, and we connect them with customers. And we try to keep the money in our communities to say strong, and not lose them to con artists that are out there every day. That's good thing. Devoid bias that BBV's policy is to refrain from recommending or endorsing any specific business, so you're not in the business of endorsing other businesses, we will state that we recommend you use BBB credited businesses, simply because they have met our standards. They have agreed to uphold ethical business practices. Resolve customer, complaints, if they can't or make a good faith effort to do that. But we do rate businesses whether or not, they belong to the BBB on the same scale, everybody gets letter grade ratings using the same standards, weather or not. They belong that way, it starts out with a level playing field, although we.

"This is money matters with Ken moraif. And of course, I am your host Ken moraif. Spouses, go back. If Laos is go back to their spouses when their stock goes down, then boy two thousand eight must have been a lot of family reunions. Anyway, sorry about this. I know it's a bit silly. It's very silly. And not actually very funny because people suffered in two thousand eight now. Before I go step further. Let me make sure you know, who I am. I am Ken moraif. The host of money matters. With Ken moraif. I've been a certified financial planner professional for the last twenty marvelous wonderful and very exciting years, and all of the ideas that we talk about on this show. These are the very same ideas that we talk about with our beloved and most valued clients, and we now serve clients in forty three states, and we're very blessed to be able to do that. And for the second year in a row. Our firm money matters is was named as a finalist and in two thousand eighteen a winner of the Better Business Bureau ethics award. They have this award that they call the torch award for ethics and we wanted in the large companies category. And this is the North Texas Better Business Bureau and. And that is allow I was very very, I didn't know I got, you know, they don't tell you. Right. They tell you, you're you're a finalist, but they don't tell you you one they forced you to go to the thing and dress up and look nice and take your spouse. And then they found out we found out that we wanted. It was very very nice. And ethics. We believe is the most important thing your reputation and your ethics in all walks of life. Not just if you're a financial adviser, but in particular now because we specialize in retirement planning, we work primarily with people who are retired or retiring soon. And so our focus is on preservation of what you spent your lifetime accumulating. Okay. So you've worked you saved you put money away you've done all that. And now you wanna retire? You wanna have your second childhood without parental supervision. You want to go play and have fun, and you don't want to lose half your money or something like that. And cause yourself issues. So I wanna talk with you. This is actually write a blog for kiplinger. And there was a the the last one I wrote was on cash flow planning for retirees. Okay. And basically, I want you to think of your investments as you would the company that you worked for that gave you your wages. Okay. So once you retire if you need money from your investment investments to supplement. Lament your your your cost of living to provide you with income to support. To pay for your cost of living. Then thinking of it as a wage that you're getting from your company, I think is very instructive. So your investments are a company you're running this company, and this company is generating profits, and it pays you away. So you invest your money. It gets you dividends and income and capital gains, and you and you distribute that to to supplement your retirement. So you're running this company. Right. So you're the CEO you're the president of this company, and this company has one customer that represents forty percent of your revenue, okay, which is bad planning on. But, but there are a lot of companies that that's the case they have one customer that is a vast majority. It's you know, it's the biggest customer they have by far. So you have one customer that represents forty percent of all the revenue that your business provide gets, and this business is giving you the wages that you live on. Now, this customer leaves you they go to a competitor. And you lose forty percent of your revenue. What do you do Mr. MRs CEO? Would you do? Now. This question was asked when I was in MBA school by guy by the name of salmon's, who's a billionaire. He came and talked a bunch of NBA students and he asked that question. You lose your best customer forty percent of your revenue is gone. What do you do? And all of these smart kids. You know, we're in there, we say, well, you get your salespeople out on the street, and you start beating the drum bang on doors you increase your advertising, and he was like, Nope. Nope. You create a new marketing strategy new sales strategy. Nope. Nope. And we went through it all no one can figure out what you're supposed to do. And he said, you know, what you do you cut your expenses? First thing you do you got to stop the bleeding? If your revenue went down by forty percent, you gotta cut your expenses commensurately because if your if your expenses continued to level they were before, and you don't have the revenue supported you will go out of business. That's. That same.
