Author Doug Giles Recounts a Harrowing Lion Hunting Experience

"Is always. Especially exciting when I have on Doug Giles, GI LES, he's a maniac, I consider that a compliment, a high compliment, my friend, Doug Giles, welcome. Eric how are you doing big dog? You are you're too much, and I say that in the good sense, meaning exactly the right amount. Behind you, I see a mounted Lion, which I believe you sent into glory with your own gun. Is that what happened? Yeah, I was fortunate to hunt this line back in 2015 right before doctor Palmer shot Cecil the lion and thank God, man, that I got it before the importation ban on lions from Africa. So this thing came to kill me. I know some of my enemies wish that it would have and we shot him nearly a point blank range with an old German double rifle in Eric. I'm telling you what that leaves memory burn. And when David said he killed a lion with his bare hands, I'm kind of thinking, you know what? I might call stair core Tori as the Latin would say, or as the Greeks, you know, hailing from your heritage. They might call that scuba lawn because I can't imagine trying to kill one of these big dog with bare hands. You have to have some kooky anointing of the Holy Spirit. I always assumed when David said that, that he was talking about with a sling. I just assumed that. It doesn't matter. Lions are scary and the line behind you. Now, when you say came to kill you, I mean, you were hunting lions. Is that correct? I mean, you weren't just like sleeping and stepping back in your own business and it came to kill you. And it was self defense, but close enough. Yeah, no, we were stalking him. We found a kudu that he had killed about three 30 in the morning. And you wanted to revenge because a friend of yours knew that kudu has a child? Exactly. His name was Bert, I think. And so we had to take revenge on him, but anyway, we found him about after tracking four or 5 miles, and he was tired of our stuff. And so he decided to see what these skinny white boys from America had to offer. And it was an incredible altercation. We got it on video. I'll never post it in public because Zuckerberg and Peter will have an absolute heart attack. But it's not for the faint of heart, brother. That's

"Today. I'm going to do something a little different for this installment of your next dive normally tried to take you to a dive destination where we talk about the trip from a number of different perspectives. The travel the lodging the dive operator. Oh yeah the diving. Now we've been around the world. But today i'm going to focus on one particular dive that is almost in our backyard. It is one of the most iconic dives here in new england and that is the wreck of the chester. Polling off gloucester mass. The chester polling was a coastal tanker. That sank in a brutal storm on january tenth. Nineteen seventy seven. The tanker had just left everett massachusetts and was bound for newington new hampshire. That information is pretty consistent in the research but there is other conflicting information about where she had been. And what cargo she delivered for example some documentation said she had previously delivered kerosene to new jersey while others indicated that the heating oil was delivered to everett mass. I would suspect that delivery to everett mass to be more likely always interesting when you Doing research to get this type of inconsistency now the chester polling was bill in nineteen thirty four at mariners harbor new york by united dry docks incorporated it was originally in the plattsburgh sacconi somewhere along the line at also known as the mobile albany before getting renamed as the chester polling at the time of its sinking it was owned by the motor vessel polling brothers and that was number one inc. I wasn't able to find who was actually named after but obviously some member of the family. So that's a little bit of history about the ship now on january tenth. Nineteen seventy seven capital captain. Bert charles burgess was in command. The forecast for that day was for thirty five mile an hour winds along with fifteen to twenty foot seas. the chester polling chester. A polling left. Everett are left everett at six thirty. A m well as we all know. Forecast can be wrong. The winds built up to fifty miles per hour and to seize goddess highs. Thirty feet facing the mounting sees captain. Burge's tried to get more stability by adding more ballast but at ten thirty a m a thirty foot waves smashed into the tanker and broke it in half the captain called for abandoning the ship. Six of the seven members of the crew were saved. I believe it was the cook jail. Derosa from providence rhode island who perished the sir. The stern section of the chester polling came to rest off easter point gloucester originally in about seventy five feet of water with the bow section sinking about four miles off of eastern point in about one hundred ninety feet of water subsequent winter. Storms move the stern section to its present location about eight hundred yards off of eastern point about ninety five feet of water. I think the bottom might be a little bit deeper than that. However the stern section of the chester polling is what some folks call hollywood wreck sitting upright and is probably the most popular wreck dive off. Cape ann as that areas known. Now i- i dove the chester polling way back in july two thousand and five. It was my fortieth dive and a double dip on. The polling was part of my advanced open water class. These dyes would constitute my deep and wreck advanced. Open water dives. At that time. I was still diving in a seven. Millimeter wetsuit with the appropriate gloves and hood. I use the standard aluminum. Eighty tank with nighthawks. Thirty two. I can still remember the anxiety that had doing. The first real wreck dive in the northeast but once in the water what an amazing dive the visibility that day was thirty feet and my max step was at eighty five. Even though it was july the water temperature on iraq was fifty degrees. It was incredible to move along the deck and reach the mid mid ship section where. The tanker broken half absolutely mesmerizing but with an aluminum. Eighty you don't get much bottom time and after about fifteen minutes we headed back to the up line and after are appropriate safety. Stop we climb back aboard the boat and got ready to do it again. Total dive time was twenty six minutes the second dive that day was just as spectacular and pretty much the same profile. Let me just say in a wetsuit. It can get pretty chilly. I didn't go back to the chester polling until august. Two thousand nine and that was my last trip there. It was my two hundred and forty ninth dive but this time i did it in a dry suit and hope to get some good video of iraq. I still dove aluminum. Eighty the dive was just as i remembered and just as exciting visibility again was thirty feet. And my max. Depth was eighty two with and the bottom temperature. That day was forty eight degrees still very cold but so much better in a dry suit again however with an aluminum eighty. You just. Don't get much bottom time especially if your task loading like shooting video so my recommendation is that if you are planning to die the polling you might want to consider a little bit bigger tank something like a steal one hundred or going to doubles. I know that i wouldn't consider going back with anything less than a steel one hundred tank. How do you get to the chester polling back. Then we use cape and divers but they closed up several years ago and recently the dive boat cape and diver to was purchased by several guys from boston. An air now operating regularly chart regular charters again became an diverse to is a forty five foot. us coastguard registered dive vessel. It is spacious and right now with limited divers on board you get plenty of room to get ready and dive but you don't get a lot of but you don't get a lot of time because you don't have a lot of time to get ready because the is only a few minutes from the dock so be prepared one thing. Different about northeast wreck diving. Is that as a diver. You need to bring all your gear that includes tanks weights everything. It's not like diving at a resort. Don't get caught short by not being prepared with all your own stuff now. Here's an interesting element. That i discovered during my research. It appears that in nineteen sixties. The chester polling was length lengthened. By maybe twenty six or so feet. That doesn't sound like much. But at the time of her sinking her length with two hundred and eighty two feet so that lengthening was about ten percent of the original ship's length could this have been a contributing factor for the ship splitting in half. I wonder so if you happen to be in the area of cape ban in gloucester massachusetts. You might wanna look up cape and diver to and head out for a double dip on the chester a

"Everybody has been speculating on this. Apparently kylie jenner allegedly vary allegedly is pregnant. We don't know for sure. But that's what everyone is. Say this and it's not like this rumor has existed. This rumor has existed for months now. Circulating on tig talk. There were sleuths pointing out her nails in all different instagram stories. That gives you prerecording content now. It seems like we're leaning toward. She really is pregnant. I was skeptical at first. Because page six was the first one to break it page. Sex exclusive sources. Say to pay six hundred pregnant this. This happened literally three weeks ago. Celtic page six pair sold. And she's pregnant and guess what paris hilton said. She wasn't pregnant so at first. I was skeptical It seems like everyone was using this video of caitlyn jenner as a source or she was at an event She's asked about having eighteen grandkids. She said oh you know thirty would be a nice number round number and said you know sh nineteen nineteen on the way. Somebody's pregnant didn't say who supports. Everyone thought kylie and then. Tmz said hold the phone. Everyone burt jenner is having his third child but maybe she was really talking about kylie. We don't know if it's kylie and bert than there's twenty on the way but every other outlets jumped on it afterwards it was. It was one after the other page. Six teams e. people us just jared a e. The Infinite Alchemy of Storytelling

"I grew up in kuwait in the early nineties where i was raised by screens. The main windows to reality for me or television and the internet not because of their accuracy because there were storytelling machines. These machines told stories that contradicted another but all somehow seem true. There bridge in new quick to be one of the leading voices at media specifically for comedy shows theater the rest of the world new kuwait to be a small country that was located between saudi arabia iraq and iran during the gulf war. Both stories are true. These creams i dragged my sense of reality from pulled me different than sometimes contradicting stories about who i am and where i come from. And that was the only way. I understood anything around me by placing it into different sets of stories when social media came around. It changed the way screens worked for me. It was only a window for observations anymore but interactive one. When i could use to identify everything around me in even more varied in multiple ways to know myself better actually participate in the storytelling process. It started with drawings. Mostly cross hatched on photographs. That i took with my iphone. With time i started to animate them onto videos that told stories from different perspectives in a mockumentary series titled bert lock. It consists of scripted interviews by imagined minority voices discussing issue or one of common interests. The title of the series is meant to ponder the idea. What if birds were watching back. What would they think of our obsession with speed and oil with. They think we were done for standing under the rain. The second episode for example is an interview with the little girl that tries to explain her definition of health where she says she wants to be like her father. Be strong smoke until children. Not to an awful like her grandmother. Cook good food. Beloved by everyone to have diabetes. She also introduces us to the stomach. Animal it's the head of an animal that's connected to our stomachs and its objective is to continue eating. Even after a full you see. Kuwait has one of the highest rates of childhood obesity presenting it in amusing story while pointing out. That children are themselves minor. Voice is a great way to really put the statistic into

We rick i wanna come down with like a fucking hawaiian shirt on like the dumb white guy. I am just confusing. Whatever there's going to be tamp people down there. I think a hawaiian shirts acceptable. It just come down there do your show and say some ignorant shit by the way that fucking playoff series which i missed i just heard about the panthers tampa that sound like one of those old school. It's just amazing. It's amazing unfortunately tampa brought back Know players that hadn't all season and were the defending champions. We haven't had a good hockey team. Is i good hockey team. We've had down here in twenty-five years. It must specifically enrage you that that mutation of nets team after ten years. An all distortions of the super teams. The three trolls right. You got hardened and kyrie irving and kyrie irving who destroyed the boston celtics. At specifically the way he did and kevin durant that the three of them would put up almost a buck fifty over the weekend and that the the celtics after so much hope and young young players and draft picks looked as recently. Don't watch basketball but that was. That was a nice spin it. You didn't never mentioned the jalen brown wasn't playing. You're kind of ignoring the fact that kyrie irving also could throw the ball the harden or k. d. if he got double teamed. I mean if listen if that's what you're into do you like watching. What is it that the old doug stanhope joke. It's like you're rooting for walmart. I mean that's what you're into. It destroyed that mom and pop hardware store. You made the boston celtics. Mom and pop hardware store. Yeah at this point. I think if. Listen if you're going to just draft players you know what i mean. Listen i'm not gonna grudge somebody signing a free agent. I'm not going to do that. But i'm just saying like jesus christ. How many fucking guys can pile on one team. I'm just disappointed that i didn't get him enraged again. I was trying bird. Would you allow me before we get out. Is it because this just good ratings and then people watch the sports guys in your position. That's all you. Don't you wanna see competition. So you would want mario lemieux and wayne gretzky to be on the same fucking team matthew. And that's what you'd want to see. Bill when lebron wade and bosh together they only one two they then the first year the everyone got to laugh at them because lebron refused to post up jj beret like he had and he said he had to be like tom. Hanks passed away. You remember that michael jordan. The big dance. The last dance right. You remember that moment where he couldn't get by the pistons so he starts lifting weights the whole rocky moment right and then he comes back and beats them. None of these guys are going to have that moment. It's going to be so what you do. They're all going to be like. Oh i just joined the pistons and then destroyed my former team and it. It looked hard. Lebron suffered plenty for many years and then got that team together. Got that team together and loss to the dallas mavericks and it's the last time just collided too but dirk winning a championship with one of those guys bill. That's not something that happens very often. And so i just don't think it's weird that they've kind of just said to the new orleans fan base like you guys are never going to win a title in joy zion. While you have them you'll get a couple of years of experience in what his initial contract expires. He's going to go to greener pastures. That's always been basketball. Teams always winning basketball. It's been how many ships that's a bad argument. A bad argument snaking away the brilliance of the front office of the lakers and the celtics back in the day when you had to look at college talent every year the whole draft is college talent that dominated at the college level. Dominating you know. Eighty ninety percent of those people aren't going to make it to the nba even higher than that so few guys basketball team so it was like a real skill to draft something to just go through the league and see guys that are dominating at the pro level and be like i want that guy. I don't know i what's wrong with the way the nfl does all of a sudden jacksonville. Can all of a sudden you know wouldn't championship i. I think it's great. I think. I don't know i'd like talent. Spread out more random though anybody can win the championship because they play playoff games. That are random one. And you're done and your fish in the best of seven series now. Why it's because there's a salary cap and the town is spread out evenly around the league. You know this. There's literally call the they. Call the all star teams now the team lebron and t k d. It's fucking ridiculous. Their salary caps in boot sports sports have so. I'm not for salary caps. Are you four salary. Get me here to argue on behalf of salary cap. How would you like to. I'm not a businessman here. I'm not a businessman wherever it is that prevents one team because they have two hundred million dollars from spending it and then somebody else in some little shit market and they can't compete. Well like what what.

Look at some of those previous episodes as well but for today. What our top tips for today. at the fifth grade period near the first one that comes to mind for me is to if you have one of those days. You're not happy with it. Even is that a minus. You want to go see your professor's office hours. All of them have them even they might point mate you may have to call or email whatever it may be soccer. The professor rally in five weeks out of the longest semester. So don't stress out too much. There's still time to get together so the first step is talk to you. Talk to your professor out Assignments you redo possible. Figure out what you need to do better. Even if you can't reveal assignments they made the feedback unless they outright. The next paper better How to show your work. Bet on your mets so talk to your professor. That's that's definitely the first two becomes absolutely and that's the first tip always in forever whether it's a pandemic are if you have any question about what's happening in the class. Your professor instructor are the best place to start. So that's tip number one. If you if you have a great that you would like to improve taty professor absolutely so the second tip that we had talked about is an extension of our last episode with dr bert wail regardless of what gray says this is a time to check in say. Well what can i do in my life to help support my in class in one of the best things you can do is make sure you're getting enough sleep. Number two is getting enough sleep. Oh i can sleep for three hours for hours in still be able to function and yes you may be able to give up and go on about today. But they couldn't. It's not going to be expert. Doug as it could be more sleep. I'm eager to get all of your scientists done during the day. That's our sleep. You'll probably not donna's best as you could have know. Still make good grades. This week has been about sing. got to sleep absolutely. I totally agree. An finally beginning to feel the effects and that is more monotonous than than usual. Usually when you're going to the canvas and you're meeting new people in your state you know. There's a different combination of people you see. Every day is a little less monotonous. But when ron zoo and it's the same process every day you know it can't be fatiguing. Actually it sort of like even though we're sitting here not moving around sometimes that can make you feel more tired as well and that's why sleep regular sleep. A good amount asleep is really important so absolutely l. n. also another point. I wanted to make about sleep is yes when you're in college. This is the stereotype. Is that you do. You know you stay up late and have all nighters and you study. But you're also laying the foundation for good habits for the rest of your career for example and so this is a good time to figure out. Brian Austin Green Celebrates Valentine’s Day with 'Amazing, Considerate, Loving' Sharna Burgess

"What was the Valentine's headline about Megan Fox and Machine Gun? Kelly. He Meghan, Our machine gun was wearing some blood of Meghan Kelly Fox. Around his neck in a necklace, right? Because they love each other so much. They're so metal. He wears her blood. She heavy metal. No, honey. He is No, honey. No, honey, He's not. He is rap. He's a rap. He's a wrap party. Okay, He's a rapper artist s O Anyhoo. See what? See? Um, back to the media War That I said, is being fought betwixt the to know every time one of them does something publicly, The other one responds through the media passive aggressively, right? Well, Brian Austin Green has done so and he did so in the form of a 12 Minute Instagram live session on Sunday with Sharna Burgess, His Burgess, Bert Burgess Burgess. His love interest 12 minutes. It's a long time on how they how grateful they are to have found each other. It's 12 minutes talking about there. Is he wearing her blood? No, but he did say the following and I just thought Now listen, I will Nick pick I am not above it. He said the following of her and her character of his new lady in his life. He calls Sharna Burgess and amazing, considerate, loving, kind person. And I just thought like the considerate piece was kind of an interesting choice of words. Like I said, I'm going to nit pick. Considerate is a word that you use to describe a child may be like, Oh, there's such a kind and considerate person. Or it's like a report card word, but I don't hear that word and think that's something you say about the person who you've fallen in love with unless you're trying to say. My ex is inconsiderate on this person is considerate. And you're not wearing the blood of your Yeah, Favorite person. And honestly, maybe it was a little bit of a reaction to the blood. Necklace. I just think you know, these two couples are like living out their population ships their new publish in ships and sort of using it as a vehicle by which to take out their passive aggressive thanks to towards each other. They are definitely they are definitely doing this very performative Lee. Apparently one of the other things that Brian Austin Green said in this 12 minute long instagram live was this could be the start of something amazing. He said. Quote. Birding with Dr Meredith Williams

"Berta. Volt from more than one. Hundred and fifty million years ago and then explosively diversified culminating in more than ten thousand species distributed worldwide. Today are human. Relationship to beds is complex to seen as spirit messengers of the gods and at the same time. We took the wild red jungle fowl. From india and selectively bred into domesticated chickens the now farmed in cages feathers have been used for thousands of years and indigenous headpieces and at the same time but has like parrots and parakeets a kept as pets bird poop called guana was used as the first fertilize of modern agriculture. And charles darwin study of galapagos finches was to the formulation of evolution. Buds are all around us. We are closer to bed than any other wild animals birds. I literally and figuratively are canaries in the coal mine. Their wellbeing is our wellbeing threats to buds range from habitat loss including logging climate change industrial farming with pesticides invasive species and even cats. These will had a devastating impact on the bird populations of the us and canada. Which in just the last fifty years have declined by. Three billion birds danton insane. Thirty percent of all birds gone. Three billion pez of wings have vanished ever across our continent from sea to shining sea. Luckily birds have strong allies in their corner. There an estimated sixty million active bird watches in the us alone and with the pandemic shutting down so much of our country. We have flocking to bird watching like never before everything from bird feeders. To binoculars have been in short supply and this year the birding app e bird collected more sightings in a single day the was admitted during the first two and a half years of the apps existence. I must admit coming late to the bird-watching pardee. But thanks to dr meredith williams. That's about to change. I'm lucky enough to work with meredith every day in her role. Running one of the most important and complex agencies in california governor. The department of toxic substance control. Dr williams received two undergraduate degree from yale and a doctorate in physics from north carolina. State university meredith then worked and silicon valley fortune. Five hundred companies in the technology consumer product and chemical sectors meredith left the private sector to follow her passion for wetlands and birds and led the san francisco estuary institute as we'll hear. Meredith journey is about so much more than her resume. Meredith nine meet apt get ready for my maiden watching invention merit so we're about to go hopefully bed watching what. What do we need to bring with us while like what. What's what's in the bird watching backpack almost nothing. Which is great binoculars. Of course are your starting point. So i hope you have some inaugurals. I know you were looking for some recently. You gave me some good advice. But i get any but we all kind of professional but what just like you would have an extra pair. Do thought so. It's in the office but we could stop on the way out of town. Not of that sound. No we should. We should yeah. You just kind of out now. Okay okay so you got the binoculars. How do you if you're starting out. It's surprising how good have gotten very affordable these days so i mean it's still a lot to invest but ask a bird watcher. They might have an extra pair. That's the first place you might wanna try like them. What do you well. first of. All there are lots of different kinds of birdwatchers in terms of some people. Want to count every burden get really long list. And they track every single birthday they see. It's about the numbers of the that very unique bird and they chase vagrant birds that fly in unusually and they're rushing off to see that bird so there those kind of bird watchers I'm a bird watcher. Just watch one bird for a long time. I liked bird behavior. just i'm just fascinated by them. And i think they're beautiful so i could just end up watching one bird for for quite a while you can just take it. In at whatever level you want in terms of the variety birds that you could see and how you would just experience them and enjoy them. So and i think the only way to find that out is to bert. Watch a little and see what grabs you What you do sounds really peaceful. The first thing that sounds the first thing sounds more. Like in england as a whole breed of people go train spotters and i always kind of identified them with bird watchers. Like it's really about. How many things. You've you've been able to capture and less about the bird the thing that you'll doing just sounds like being a peaceful will watching another animal even the people who are energized. That way unless they're doing a big day which would be a day when they map it out to see as many birds as they can. In a single day they're not necessarily rushing around even they are going to have moments of really enjoying a bird and even somebody like me chased around golden gate park looking for a rare warbler. That's very rarely in san francisco. There's an amiability amongst birdwatchers is really camaraderie. People are so nice. There's always somebody better in terms of being a better bird watcher. Meaning they either can identify birds better or you know they just have a lot of experience for the a little bit about. The ecology and people are so happy to share their information. That it's really wonderful. That's one of the things i like about it. And it tends to be every now and then you get into group and there'll be somebody who's a little loud but by and large the the folks are really kind of it's easy to get in a groove with with birdwatchers and settled and gopher along stroll and see some great birds. But what's there everywhere that it's a it's a big i mean like it huge movement and it's growing apparently it's one of the fastest growing outdoor activities. There is it's it is just kind of crazy places where i been going for ten years and cues to be just me and five or six friends maybe and now parking lot and i think the pandemic has made it even more so where a lot of people. That's how they wanna get outdoors or they've they've just kind of discovering it because they know it is one of the only ways to be outdoors so i think it's going to continue to grow which i think is great because then more people are connected to the natural world which obviously makes them care about it more. How did you get into meredith like what. What was your journey into bed watching. I mean i liked birds always in the yard growing up in ohio. You know the robbins and the blue jays. There was a hill in town. And i used to ride my bike up in the hill early in the morning and i would always see birdwatchers and i said when i'm old air quotes. I'm going to bird watch. And i kind of that seed was planted but i didn't really bird-watching until my three say in my thirties. I started volunteering for the san francisco. Bay national wildlife refuges. That you know are on the perimeter of the bay. You know them well getting restored a lot of them Back to title harsh. And i when i volunteered i would be doing everything from pulling out. Invasive plants to building shells but there are always birds around and i just became more and more and more fascinated with the birds invested in binoculars and just started creeping in. You join the audubon society and suddenly you're getting news about different outings and the next thing you know you're you're pretty far in foreign now. I'm foreign. I'm not pretty far and have taken a couple bird vacations. Which i think says that. I'm pretty far in. But what do those entail. The longest trip i took was to go to brazil to the pantanal. Which is a very large wetland like the mecca of bud watching their many mecca. It is a mecca over the course of two weeks. We just went out every morning. We get up before sunrise. Be moving by six o'clock at the latest. Usually more like five thirty and we went to a place that's called the parrot crater a giant sinkhole. And it's all a lot of parents live down in the sinkhole. And so you look down. A new parrots lying around in a simple it was tremendous and we ended up seen two hundred different species of birds there along with some giant giant eaters river otter is and it was quite a trip but the birds were spectacular.

Trump-Kemp Dispute Creates Rift Within Georgia GOP as Runoff Elections Nears

"You might need to win an election is a unified message. But Republican unity is hard to come by in the state of Georgia. Right now, President Trump has called Governor Brian Camp a fool and a clown for refusing to overturn President elect Joe Biden's victory there. Kemp says intervening in the election would be illegal and pressure over that dispute is creating a rift within the state's Republican Party just three weeks before runoff elections that will determine control of the Senate from member station to be Abie in Atlanta ever hurt reports Earlier this month, Governor Brian Kemp gave a press conference at the state Capitol about George's plan to distribute the Corona virus vaccine. Well, good afternoon, everyone. First of all, let me thank you for joining us today. Also, the elephant in the room is politics and on the Facebook Live comments. It's center stage. This man has turned his back on his Republican Party, writes one Georgian Can't believe I voted for you. Camp sellout, says another. And don't bother to run again. You're finished. Needless to say, Georgia Republicans are divided right now. Some lawmakers air calling to override the governor and back the president by demanding a special session of the Legislature. We're here in Athens today, Bert Jones with US And bring the beach part of the gang of four, putting out a petition demanding a special session. They're trying to go around the governor they need to Republican State Senators, Jones and Beach were on the John Fredericks Show and National Pro Trump Radio program. Last week, they alleged large scale voter fraud, which Republican election officials have said didn't happen. Here's beach and I can tell you if we do not fix this, and that's why I'm so adamant about this. I'm so fearful. That we're gonna wake up January 6, and we're not gonna like what happened because it's not going to be a fair election. Beach and Jones are responding to pressure from their pro trump constituents like those tearing camp apart on the Internet and calling in on this show, Let's get to the phone lines. Where we have Caroline from Sandy Springs carry these senators, some say, are ready to break the law to back President Trump. But Caroline wants them to know it's still not enough. We are mad on being very nice right now. We need you to step up into your part. We need you to stand up for us. Now. The pressure is so fierce on Republican state lawmakers, it was difficult to find someone willing to speak on the record for this story. They're worried about being targeted. But one did. My name was Chuck Martin represented 49th district up in North Fulton County. Martin is a longtime Republican. He spent 18 years in the General Assembly and wishes President Trump won the election. But he liked the governor doesn't believe the Constitution allows the Legislature to intervene That hasn't stopped tens of thousands of emails from flowing in. I'm getting an email that says, Stand true to your oath of office do this. But standing true to my oath of office doesn't allow me to do that. It's been the most frustrating moment in his public service career, he says, because some people have been completely convinced by misinformation. Like one retired army colonel who is pushing for the election to be overturned. Martin responded with language from the state Constitution, saying, Please explain how I can legally do what you're asking me to do. And instead from him, I get no How instead you know, he calls me a coward. A traitor. You know somebody that won't stand up to my oath of office. That's frustrating to me. I mean, I take this job seriously. President Trump is creating a rift in the Republican Party at a very inopportune time, says Charles Bullock, a political scientist at the University of Georgia as we saw in November of this year The Republican Party doesn't have AH, large commanding lead within Georgia, It is rarely close. It could be the kind of division it opens the door for Democrats to do very well in 2022. Jeannie Bradley is a Republican voter from helps about in Eastern Georgia. She was at a Mike Pence rally this month. And she's just confused because of the mixed messages about the election and about her Republican leaders. But we need to know more. You know, you're getting bits and pieces from all of the news media. You don't know. What to believe anymore, And it's just not the news media. It's people you know. In general, Republicans will still have her vote. But there are other people, she says, who may throw up their hands in this chaos, vote democratic or skip the election. And if Republicans lose the run offs, the big divisions that have emerged since November will likely only intensify in the GOP for NPR news. I'm Emma hurt in Atlanta

Marianna Leivaditaki's Chestnut Onion Stew Recipe

"Hello My name is Marina Boulevard key and I am from Crete half creighton and half Scottish Ashley I am a chef and I work here in London. And have been doing. So for many years, I was the head chef Mario and currently the head chef at Maurito at Hackney road. The race appeared like to share with you today is a chestnut and onion stew with the option of adding Pumpkin to it. So dishes really simple. A slow cooked stews. So you just need to create a really small base and sweet base using finely chopped carrots and celery and garlic and kind of cutting them really small and putting them in a pan with a little bit of olive oil and making sure they're nice and sweet. So cooking them for about fifteen to twenty minutes and then adding lots and lots of baby onions. So I like to use the Bora tiny. Tyler onions because they're small the really sweet and they're quite mild. So depending on how many people I want to do this do for I locate about five to seven baby onions, per-portion sa- loads, and loads, and this will make you really really beautiful. So after your base is nice and sweet, you just add the onions and then you add your cooked chestnuts. So of course, you can use chestnuts that you cook and you. Peel, but that will take a very long time. So I like to use good quality vacuum packed chestnuts. So I would say you kind of us about one hundred, one, hundred, twenty grams of chestnuts per portion just to be really nice and generous, and this is kind of what this is about using chestnuts instead of meat. So it's adding this kind of really really nice richness to this to that meat word if you using. That so you get everything in the port you add some really good quality chopped tomatoes a nice amount of red wine you season with salt and pepper, and a little bit of Orange Peel, a cinnamon stick, and you just make sure your port is nice and liquidity and there's enough liquid to kind of let this to cook gently few think the reason you can always add some wine or you can just add some water. Place a lead and just let it simmer for half an hour forty minutes just until it start smelling beautifully, you will be able to smell the orange and the cinnamon. When you take the laid off, you will see actually this source has really thickened and this Jew is just absolutely delicious. I wouldn't say it needs more than forty five minutes send. Another amazing ingredient to add that is very seasonal at the moment is. The pumpkin or the butternut squash or any funny squash that you might come across. You can just peel it Q-bert and added in this do at the same time with your base, your salary and your carrot, your onions. So I think here in London I don't often see chestnuts Jews and it's a true. That's very traditional in Greece in the winter months and it's absolutely amazing like if you go up the mountains, you know you. Might Walk into Taverna. The is run by an old granny and before you even kind of you just open the door and you're like, okay, she's Cook Chestnuts Stu. You know. So it's something that you find, but it's something that is also special. So it's not everywhere. It's not in every TAVERNA eater you go two sets a win today sheets really warming at celebrating chestnut, which you know are just absolutely amazing and I love them. And, it's a dish that I recently I collaborated with this amazing new project called wild radish, and this is my dish for Christmas together with lots of other things. So it's a little bit more elaborate, but the main stew is this chestnut and nonunion stew and it's been fantastic collaborating with world radish because it's just an amazing new project asking US sheriffs and other really really lovely beautiful capable sheriff's. To think of dishes they love Cook them, create them, write them down, and then they make them really easy for everyone to do. So you receive this amazing box with

We watched as venture out with the girls, and they're like at the very beginning there like I'm howling lasted and they're like it's funny. 'cause he's special needs and we're like what. Is he like a special needs kid I know he's just no, he's just like crazy. And I'm like Oh. Okay, and then it to the end where where you find out that. They've all hooked up with the COP who has addict who is immediately? Einhorn Lieutenant, Einhorn finkle, Finklestein Horn yeah, and they've found out all hooked up with this dude and. that. He's got a deck. They show the deck ever starts throwing up like. You could not do that today. You could not first of all. You're dead naming him by calling him. Right you could not go. Oh, disgusting, you've got. I mean Dan. Marino's throwing up is. At. My daughter's. Different Time Burt Oh my God. So we watch for Georgia's birthday. They watch pretty in pink so. As. What's the sixteen sixteen candles? stickney handle so we did a socially distanced movie night in the backyard. Put up a screen in the backyard. All the kids are watching it and all of a sudden the. The guy's girlfriend gets drunk and he gives her to the NERDS, and he says have fun with her and drunk. Michael Anthony. Hall has sexual her. And she passed out and they wake up and she didn't like. Did we talk and? He's like I. Think so, and he's like I good. It's like a gas like it totally rapes. He completely rapes her like not even a question, but if he's he's also fucked up. And if neither one of remembers, how does that work and I'm just asking? It's I'll tell you what is problematic because that we had a hit pause and say the girls. This is not appropriate. Boy Gets you drunk and then gives you to his friends and his friends have sex abuse. Like. That's not cool. I. Want to say that they knew that already. Hammered and then your boyfriend gives you to his friends right there that should be. It's in this movie. It's a plot. It's like a subplot where you're like. Oh. Yeah! Boys will be boys and you're like. That's not fucking cool. I worked back then because she looked like she was twenty six. And Anthony Michael Hall look like he was like twelve. Such great line when he wakes up in the back of Jake's car with the girl, and he's got his gear on, and she wakes me because you're all mom. That guy's fucking hilarious and law. That guy's his comedy timing is. Perfect Perfect in weird science when he when he's doing the black guy character. Chicks game hold smoke. Yeah, that's what it is what it is and he's talking to all the black guys and he's like, and he's no that is actually from. That's your right breakfast. Bump Breakfast Club. He crush every movie. Every single movie, He was in I missed that he didn't. He had like a cop drama or something like that two years ago. Wondering why he didn't translate. To like adult start on the way he was when he was a kid 'cause he was amazing. Now, he did. He did a whole series. It's just like. It's just how this fucking business is. Every day you know what it is every group, a young people has to have people that. They have to have their comedians. They gotta have their rockstars their bands in there fucking. Era Movie Stars. The just young people are going to connect with young people that their generation so i. think he more just transitioned. Into something else then you got older I got older. You get married. You have kids. And then this new What's that? What's that Korean, boy band that everybody's flipping out about. What is it April up? Is that what it is? Yes, see like that. "It it is it for me. Was the story of being a stand up comedian always being on the road coming home on week on weekdays I saw the time traveler's wife. I was on a hotel room, naked on the corner bed. Just out of the shower and I start Washington normal sudden sobbing, fucking crying, going like that's me. What is it like? Cats in the cradle like the person not around no it's. It's this guy. The time traveller is Eric, Banham and In order to this is why connected with so much in order not to time travel, he drinks. So that keeps them in in the same place, so he drinks a lot, but when he does for Mehta's situation ever. When I'm sober, traveled at different times by, get shit faced I'll hang with you guys at the second sick. You guys I'm going to quit drinking. I'm going to go on the wagon all the fuck yourself. Love that I love that premise. It's great and then. Any any he I'm sure it's a very problematic script now, but he needs his girlfriend. He meets his wife when she was a little girl like he time travels back to when she was a little girl and I guess you know I. Don't know this could be very problematic. Now put, but the end of the show he end up. He ends up dying. But There is a point where his he has died and realize that sounds a fucking a mate, so if he doesn't drink, e can time travel right? Now but if he gets hammered, he stays there, so he can continue to drink and fuck up when he gets sober. Go back in time and apologize for what he just did. And then come back and continue to drink. And then and then. He when he wakes when he time travels, he wakes up naked, so he's gotta find clothes and and get dressed, but at the end of the movie with beautiful as he passed the time machine dropped usually. There's a couple places. It always drops off one of the places that trump's them. All is the woods by his wife's Childhood House. So that's how he met his wife was, she was a little girl, and he time traveled, and he was naked in the woods, and he met this little girl, and they talked, and they need any, and then ends up. He was naked in the woods. A meets a little girl. It's I. It's a very problematic script now that I talk about it but like. And and so then at the end of the movie he's dead. He's died however so. That just reminded me I. Swear I hate. I always interrupt I. I'M NOT GONNA. Say the movie because I don't want to get people in trouble. I just watched the movie. Everybody fucking loved. And you know got. Great reviews and everything, and there is a scene in there with his kids starts kissing on this chick. WHO FUCKING! Not at not Oliver Functions and I was just kind of looking at my my mother-in-law. Going I couldn't have that in the movie today. What movie is it I'm not gonNA, say. And Andrew Bleep it out. You're. And the way identity when I took, she hit my shoulder, we hit shoulders, which sent her veering into the side of the school, which are all made out of brick, so she hit her head then a sister. Whatever the fuck that I just stay I just give them a wide berth. I got I got Last night. I got. A call. From someone saying. Did you behave appropriately with? A comic girl comic and I was like I took this. I won't say her name just out of respect for her, but I. There's a hilarious girl I worked with for. Three years on the road took her with me everywhere. She's awesome John. Yes. And and I guess she put out a tweet saying. There's really great male comedians out there and she named a free milk. And didn't name me. That's all she did was didn't name me. And everyone goes over. There must be something he must have done something to her, and you're like Jesus Christ. Man Like and then. I looked at her and she's like I. Don't know what the Fuck I did. I was just trying to say something. Nice and I was like I just like listen. I'm cool your goal. That's all that matters. Let everyone spin out of control like. You know. Made That's kind of how it works. It worked out in your information and then a ton of assumption, my favorite thing with those cases. Is the people who don't know either person involved. And then they act like they're concerned for the alleged victim while they turned the spotlight of the whole story onto themselves. Those ones that go like an I'm surprised. Why or this didn't surprise me at all like this is me hearing that so and so did X. Y. and it's just like this about you. Are you really going? Dude? I called it with a sexual assault case, and then also if you knew this shit, why didn't you fucking say something? You wait for the rest of us to catch up the fucking you talking about? The sports fan I hated like. Why did they run it I would have to. After. It's up. You ever dated a female comic. Way Maybe. Get back in the day. You're going back like twenty something years. Twenty something years, so I mean nothing dude I was really fuction walled off. Dude I was I was spaghetti. Western guy back then like I would go on the road and do a run. A college dates and I wouldn't talk to anybody all day long other than ordering food, and then Watt and then, and then the next thing after I ordered my Grand Slam breakfast. The next thing I would say hey I'm bill Barham the comic tonight. That would be and I just I. Dude I'm weird I used to like. I went to all the baseball stadiums. I went to all the football stadiums to games by myself during the day. That's how I would kill a day. And whatever the fuck happened to me as a kid made me want to be by myself, because then no one could fuck with me, so I was as an adult I still had that little kid mindset. So? Yeah so I could have had a lot more fun. I did not I flushed just fucking. My ideal one was going to the King Dome in sitting out in Centerfield behind Ken Griffey junior and running to get one of the home runs trying to get it and thinking like I've seen this on this week in baseball so many fucking times. Like that. You know going up into the space needle by myself. I went to the mall of America enrolled the roller coaster. All by myself I did a lot of Shit. By myself. So. Yeah. I'm thinking for whatever reason. My first sexual experience was so bad that it made me terrified to do it with other people like I. Just was embarrassed. I was like I'm I'm just not good at it. And for whatever reason? That is I guess you know? That's the thing that Kinda kept me from dating comics, so I was like I. Don't WanNa do that to someone with a sharp wit, and then have them eviscerate me. and. They're gonNA do a bit. Out with them anytime. They're talking about an asshole guy to like. is she talking about you? I don't think so I don't know. I don't know but. You know. Yeah. Yeah it's. Time Burt your time bill. Weird. Wade fucking time? Yes. I gotta go I WANNA see I. GO Google map my old houses now. Oh. Yeah, no I did that with like. A bunch of them I in some weird way would almost by childhood home if I could. About you know what I would like to do. If it goes on the market I would like to look at it. Just. And I don't know why and I I have that weird sentimental. Sort of something. My Buddy Eddie one time we were driving through Hollywood. And, we're in the hills and he said I bet day have a beautiful view and I was like I. Bet they do and he goes. He goes. Bet Me one hundred dollars and I can't get in their house. Excuse me, he was. Bet me a hundred dollars. I can't get in their house and I was like. A bet you one hundred dollars. You can't get in their house. He pulls over knocks on the door. Lady comes to the door and he goes. Hey, I grew up here and I just wanted to see my old room. Is that okay, she goes. Yeah! That's totally fine, and then he just looks at me. He goes our good. We walked away and he goes. I could have gotten that fucking house I went holy. Set and I could have given you a hundred bucks, but you didn't. I didn't Bam that guy was so good at that Shit. He would go into subway. "And then I got on the bumper cars, trying to get my shit together every slamming into intimate, and after that right, I just went back to the bus. The Big Long Yellow Bus I'd just stayed on their eating my lunch. My mother Dax me and at this point, it was like a tuna sandwich, so it had to be at least eighty degrees and was just sitting there like I. Just Want Day to be over. A lot of those Bert. I? A Lot? And then bill won the fight when I was a kid. There was a lot of losing to the losses. I had a lot of me saying something and some coming in just kicking my ass or nutting me up in front of everybody. I had plenty up and then I had I had A. I had a couple of Nice. Yeah! I took a nice one at rocky point. I took a nice one. was there was adults around? It was weird. It was sort of the middle of the week, so it wasn't a lot of people there, but that was enough people there to step in and people did not. No stepping in. L.! I'd rather be the guy that lost the fights than like I remember the guys that won the fights, their lives and the dude, the big bad ass dudes in high school. Their lives have never turned out well. Like it doesn't. There's no connective tissue with. Being able to beat everyone up and then just succeeding in life. I all those guys that beat the shit out of everyone or just kind of like losers now that knew. That's not the case where I'm from. My grade is like wildly successful like when I went back. For a reunion twenty fifth reunion, and then I also met a bunch of on the road. Every one of them has a job. It seems equally, if not more interesting I thought I was going to be like. You. Know a buddy my going like. Oh, yeah I heard about you when I was in the US. Rome! He was like working for like I. Don't know like the FBI I. Don't know what he was working. It was and I was listening to his stories like Gee. I just tell jokes. They all yeah lot of people own their own business businesses and a lot of 'em to you know. When knuckleheads! When I was a kid, did knuckleheads not being? They were down, but they were they definitely they had their fun. So A. Guy That my class, I follow him on Instagram. And Why do you follow me Instagram? Photo couple hate on instagram. Couple of guilty pleasures that I check in with. But I I don't root against them, but there's definitely When this the show within the Shell? On somebody's is what they're presenting everybody's buying and then you. You're laughing at the subtext of all of it. Yeah, I got a couple of those. I do I yeah I I find it fucking comical. There's a bunch of people follow, and then there's people I, don't I? Don't follow, but I go to their profile once week and check out what bullshit they've said. Just like us. Well, that's my I. Don't follow him either, but I check in like once every six months. When I'm on. I'm on the road in. This is what my goes when I go late night. On on Ebay it's like not on Ebay on the Internet I ended I always end up at Ebay but I I start off with like. I Watch old sports. You know been watching a bunch of old NFL stuff. which then? Me Shit when I was a kid. I start trying to find old commercials to when I was a kid and then old toys, and then I go on Ebay just to see if anybody has them and what they're going for like bikes that I wanted when I was a kid or shirts or old patriots gear I've found all of that shit. Light night then every once in a while I think about people I went to high school with I check up on him on facebook. They're all doing seem to be doing great. Which is cool? And then I start if I get really like lonely on the road I start Google Earth old houses I lived in. In seeing what's up the trees I used to climb what they look like. I'll Dude I. go down. I go down a fucking i. don't know what. What a radical! What, what you don't seem like someone gets caught up on in online drama like you just stay out of it totally. Yeah and I've had plenty of people say Shit. Because, you're not, it's not. You can't win any of this. No winning any of it. It's it's. On then then you're the fucking asshole, and then also like so much of a lot of it has also really helped my conspiracy theory, because like some of the conspiracy theory that people have come up with. With me. In the way I am now versus the way I was and how they time. My Wife intuited shit and I just set the goal like wow man, but you look at how they put it together, and it does make sense. One of them laughed ago. Hon Do that all right? And he turns around and goes second. Waiting for you and I was like Oh shit right. My Buddy didn't know how to fight and we. We start coming around, and as I'm going back down I see on the ground, pacing back and forth like a fuck in lion, and he's got like five kids with. One of those deals I got off, and they circled around me, and they all started pushing me and every time I would gain my balance. They'd push me again and then. I just got stomped into the ground. My buddy sat there and watched it. And I remember I was just aw. Factory Elbow was all skinned my. And I went over. And, then it made the dumb movie like. You pretty tough with all your friends. Right is what I said. I would have been over what I say that I had to save some face. So I walked over to the bumper cars. Worst car ride ever to get to get on to try to get your shit together. And I remember standing in line. And then the kid who I yelled at who had a dead tooth already in his age. The outweighed me by. He was like it was a little trucker. Is What the fuck? Somebody sitting down. You can't tell how big they were. Was Way out of my weight class. And I was in the the line. And I just feel as kid cost from buying a turnaround. That dead tooth shed was like. Right my grill. He goes. My friends aren't here now now. What's up and I'm like not saying..

"COWBOY BILL IN SPECKLED PRICK Now. This is from the comedy jam when I used to dress up like Vinnie Paul, rest his soul. I have been consistently looking and whenever my parents were like an old storage unit, they've been all storage unit for the the. The Stars and Stripes when I was. In Russia and on the train, the conductor really came and ripped off his like little stars, and Stripes, and gave them to me. And I've been looking for that every time. I'm like the one thing I know I, have it. No one would vote away. Upturn was he carrying a little lantern hanging off the back of the TRAE. Hello. I got one thing that I've had. Since. I was a kid in somehow accidentally got broken when I moved out. I have an old patriots football helmet. Like root, bad ass when he wants to sit. And the fucking mass is off it. So. I wanted some. I got this thing in the in the early Seventies. Look at this this thing. Oh Wow, and it's like a ridell. It's like a really really good. I got one of those. I, gotTa. Check it out. Everybody had to one bar to bar. quarterback thing I the full linemen. fucking mask on it, so I'm trying to find some trying to go online where I can just by the clips so I can just reattach it because the mask is totally fine, so if anybody has website, see up top here with a rope. That was always like I remember when I had moved out, and K moment was broken and I was talking to my brother. Fuck this break. Football Helmet. And you totally understand how they got seats the? You know what's funny about this fucking thing to? Is it never fit my head because my head was always, this is so I got it when I was. I don't know how many years old like five or six. Instill didn't fit I couldn't get it. I couldn't get past here. Always wanted. Did you play football up? I played literally for a month in. My Dad called that Cte shit. Way Way Way ahead and he didn't like it. He took me out. which is the greatest thing he could have done because I wasn't fast. I mean. We're going to make the NFL I was. Just going to I'm already dumb. It's probably think this kid is already dom. He doesn't. He smashes his brain around. But he like. I wanted to go out as wide receiver because I was always good at catching shit. But Darryl Sting Leah just gotten paralyzed from the neck down on that Jack tatum hit. Just you know unfortunate. Hit so my parents didn't want me to do that, so they go. What position you WanNa play and I just said guard, because it sounded tops to me, and then it was just the most unexciting position ever. That was back in the seventies. We had to keep you fucking hands like this you. You couldn't even like heavy aunts away. So yeah, I know. I saw an old picture one time I was number twenty five. Only for like a month. But I remember instantly. Football was not fun. Football is my favorite thing ever. And then we went to play football, and like the coach was having to do leg lifts, and if they have a common down, he was chicken leg right in front of the parents. I stick my thigh pads and I'd put him on the side so if the kicked me. You know it's just that you. She Shit back then. You got an abuse. A little boy make tough. So. It was kind of like A. Like when people shed I'm not into an adult chicken me when I'm on the fucking ground, but I was just like. I guess this is how it is, but my dad was Kinda like Son Just. Not In your brain around. This is the play. Baseball I played baseball instead. Me Too I remember playing football in. It was back when they when they want. hydration was bad for you, and they were like no water. No water. You don't want to you off and you're in Florida just like. Yeah everything everything was about making you tougher. They did that I. Remember when we play Baseball. Actually know the guy gave me great advice. He goes now when you guys go home, don't drink a ton of water. You're GONNA get sick. have a piece of fruit instead and I went home, and I just drank a ton of water now. Rosie was was the assistant coaches name I sent my brother. Rosie was right. And then I, had a couple of slices of apple, and I immediately felt better than. I loved it. I loved I played outfield I was always good at catching shit and I was a decent hitter. I just had no wheels. What was funny? Was I stayed in shape though and when right around when I was like thirty. We went with a bunch of Comedians to central park in play. just touch football in the first time in my life I hired somebody a watch out for watch. He's fast. I almost fell down laughing. Do you realize how fucking slow? You? Guys are out of shape. If you think I'm fucking fast. because. I was slow at the peak in my life, and now I was thirty so. We went. When right after I think we had isla. Just round that time. All the comedy store comics like like Reynolds easy and bread Ernst and. Everyone Steve Byrne started going to this softball field over a Pan Pacific Park and plan homerun. Derby and I played legit baseball like I got recruited to go to college play. Play, that's amazing. Yeah, they're like. See you want WanNa. Do it and I was like well. Yeah, we're they go the softball field like we're just trying to hit home runs. They're like yeah I swear to God. I swear to God on my children's lives I got up there the first time and everybody hit. They hit out of the park and they were just like. Wait what the fuck and I was I got baseball growing up there like this is like I remember. It's so funny to good bread earns. He would swing and hit. He'll get the book yet. GET HIM ON. So. Scout Go. Made me laugh so hard. Because he is who he is right he the guy is on stage. It's who is all the time he had matching. Batting loves matching TEE PADS. Coming out looking like Jack Clock. and Saint Louis. Thank.

"There. Sorry I gotTa shut this. After. I just texted you both a clip that was going around this week of a woman who, through like a six month old into the old. Maybe Oh my God I'm not watching. On the bad one, it's like she's a swimming instructor and the kid. Just start swimming like it's not. Oh, it is Oh my God I love this. And he just. Holy Shit. Oh. Here's a baby. Lend credence, birds story you know. Here's the thing. The baby has an inability to panic. I mean you're gonNA float like after adults who can't swim after they drown, they float up like that to. Get you. People legit drown. They were. There was a big thing on I. Got It. I wish I could remember. I thought it was unreal sports about starting these. Others football player. Who didn't know how to swim. and. He said it was a big province. People pushing each other in the pool, and if you push pools gotta be fucking terrifying. To you if you can't swim. And to be. Ardian secca pedophile. Your it's death to them. It's death. You'll looking at it like Oh, wow, this is great little lower and are there burt. I'm having a tough time. This father's Day. Because I. I realized that win. I have to learn how to let people do shit for me. Is I. Sit there I don't need anything I don't need anything. Then it sucks for them because they can't do stuff. And then afterwards I. Look at all my friends and went golf with my son I did this and I'm like. Why don't I do I low self? Esteem is rearing its ugly head, so my wife was going. Hey, what do you want for dinner? Let me get something special. Got, all that food in the French. Let's just eat it up. It stresses me out when there's extra food I. Don't like food out I. Just see you looking at me like oh boy. This is fun. I said I. You're right. You're right. So what is your? What is your father's Day? Look like I'm on the road. I had mine last week. What have I done today? well. I hung out with my wife and beautiful kids and then I I know I did something. I worked out. We have my kept. What's going through Rehab with the shoulder? And Did a couple of boxes here in the office I mean at some point this the office is GonNa Look Great. I'm on my way, so I just have to you know I've been doing just shit like that. Let's say as the deal to. If there wasn't this quarantine right now I would go out with all of them tonight to some greasy spoon, mom and pop place. Everybody gets burgers in I'd get a burger split a burger. My wife in a root beer float, maybe a little fucking stick I'm going back to the sticks. Dude I fucked up, really fucked up burke. With Joanna went. Oh, I should have said now I'd already smoke in two days in a row. Somebody got me some cigars great cigars. Well my birthday. So! It was the night before my birthday and I was gonNA. Wait to my birthday, but then I was like. Oh, it's my last day of being fifty one. I'll smoke one so I smoked at, and it was my birthday and I did zoom call with all my friends. You know what I mean. L., A. Buddies and we did that. So I was like all right. Those are my two. You know because I had none in February one in March and April two in May. To June, and then I was done, and then I did Rogan so, that was the third one. And then they were laying around so I had a fourth one. And then yesterday Buddy Mike came by brought flowers. Baena having a baby. Nick Craig came by and I was like. Hey, you want us again. That was number five. But it's the thing i. only have like two cigars left. And I'm not buying anymore. In the reason why I was able to go for so long is I. Just didn't have them in the house so. I'm kind of Confident that I can go back, but. I woke up. I took the stake out of a talk manic. Fuck up! Up. Dude I brought cigars with me here. And I. But I'll tell you what I've gotten rid of the thought process of of wanting a cigar Simon had one I haven't had a cigar and probably. Got Probably like. Four months I'm guessing. And so yesterday were floating the Rio. Grande and we have beers got these great. IPA's it all suddenly go. Oh, Shit I should've brought a cigar. This is perfect being an Innertube, smoking, a cigar and my brain. Normally, my brain was like flood. The river makes you bring to cigars. You know what one at the beginning and then the middle or towards the end. Enough Beers makes you more than enough beers more than enough cigars, extra lighters, one's GonNa fall in the water. and. Ours noses God. Damn it I. Guess I forgot like the addiction part wasn't there. Yeah. It's. Being free of all your devices. Is An amazing three days. Is An amazing. It's an amazing. It's just. I am once. You've opened that Pandora's box. It's really hard to. Know what you're missing because I look at my the first seventeen years of my life, I was basically straight edge. You know what I mean just I just you know not being a kid. So every weekend I wasn't like. Oh God, I mean I need to get a buzz I had never done it, so I was excited to watch the six million dollar, man or some shit. That was my bucket cigar for the weekend, so I was sort of wondering if you can kind of go back to that. Because I. Don't watch porn anymore I don't drink anymore. I had cigars at bay. But then I worry like then the maggots be like a six hundred pound. Person Is I feel like those people that get that big is they don't do anything else. Because that and then if you're a creative overeater. Can go eat a gallon of ice cream? But the people that came up with sticking the candy bars in there. You know what if I took two slices of Marin our pizza and I use that as the sandwich or they just started. Start, building it's like prog rock. Song structure, but with food. PROG ROCK? It's just you're just doing this just to do it because it's fucking difficult and I feel like they do the same thing. I've been I made a cake for Georgia's birthday and I froze Milky Way Bar, milky ways, and then I crushed them, after were frozen and I put them in the middle of the cake in between two cakes with ice. And, they were fun. I was one of the most amazing cakes I've ever. Do that you made a milky. Way Taste good. Then bet that's amazing. You know what? is a solar snickers bar. It just this. This is a couple of candy bars out there. It's just like. How do they survive you after your three musketeer terrible? I Love Three Musketeers all. Then you know what it is this some sort of like you're into like newgate you like I love Nougat. Is. NOUGAT! newbies like that's like the plastic of the chocolate industry and has to be manmade is a new guitry i. don't even know what the fuck that shit is. A. Love Milky Way with three minutes I loved the progression from Milky Way from three musketeers to Milky Way to snickers, I wish. I had one just past snickers. That look like. It would have to have I'll tell you what my one of my favorite things. The world is Toffee I. Love Toffee. All I saw. What top NO NOT TAFFY TOFFEE! What's toffee like a score bar? Score..

"Man We're trying to teach. Hey. Zeus trae how to swim. Not In the Rio Grande not. We tried we tried to pool yesterday, and then we took him out to the Rio. Grande was a life preserver. Because it's shallow the Rio Grande only like it never gets deeper than four feet where we were. But do teaching a grown man swim is fucking scary. Cause panic muscles are no joke. Oh, yeah, so I if I was GONNA try to teach an adult how to swim the first thing I would do shallow, and I get him to be comfortable with the head under the water, so just be like you control everything. Hang onto the side. Close Your eyes. And then go under global. We're GONNA work it up to like ten seconds fifteenth that you comfortable under there. Maybe get some boggle's. We can say. And then all you gotta do is just like face. Plant and you'RE GONNA float. Don't move. Just hold your breath at any point. You can just put your foot down. Show. That's not the way to do it. I'm sure. Lifeguards going to be like. which will? Wait a make. middle-aged men drown with that misinformation. That's what we did. We took him to decide. He held onto the side and he put his head in the water, and then we had them blow bubbles, and then we had him. Flutter kick holding onto the side. Then we flutter, kick and let go of one hand athletically and then Dave Williamson. And pushed him to me like we were kids and that was a huge mistake. Because he grabbed off like like. It was. He grabbed onto me like panic like when you felt a grown man us all his muscles and we were like all right. That's not gonNA work. You quite autumn. We like we'll pick this up tomorrow. We'll try to. Hit it again tomorrow. But. He moved forward the right. He's moved forward. He's now. Go underwater like you can don't underwater. That's great. That's half the battle right there. It's crazy when you know. When you when you look at something like like, say learning a new language you go, God seems. But think things like. or Swimming or those kind of skills that are. Seems like everyone's just takes granted when you haven't done it in your grownup it R- it is. He was legit. Terrified like legit. And it just seems like something so many people take for granted. You know what I mean. Yeah. Sorry. Do you remember the add more to that? But I just one hundred percent agreed with this. Remember. Do you remember learning how to swim? Yeah I learned late for kids so I was like in. Third or fourth grade? Really Yeah, well. We just didn't have a pool. You know my friend across. The street had an above ground pool when I was really young. But. Yeah. No, and then she. My mother got us all into swimming lessons. Embarrassing because it was all like these kids and like nursery, school and kindergarten learn how to do the doggy paddle and I was like two feet bigger than. But, then once I got it. I really took to it and I love it. Yeah. I learned. My uncle threw me in the pool. There was zero left turns of surprises. The second, he said. My Uncle Mike Heathrow in the pool. No, rocks Robson your bathing suit just to make it a little tougher note just through. So, they can find out who the run to the litter was. Romy in the pool. If parents didn't tell my parents. So, this'll teach him, and he just threw me into. My Dad is a very. He's always been a very sensitive liberal like feelings guy like never never ever said any slur of any type. That's not my dad. He's not a locker room. Talk guides very sensitive. And My. Dad lost his sparking shammy. Basically killing. You're killing someone's kid. Technically I would love to have seen video of that. I gotTA. Tell you your uncle was way out of line. Way Out of line. Even back. That is way out of line. That what happened. He fishes you out. I started swimming. I don't I just really refuse to believe that. All of a sudden you turn into like. Mark Spitz do the flip turns to just because you had. I don't I don't remember it all, but that's how I learned I got thrown in the pool, and and then I started swimming after that. And gradually learned how to swim. You didn't just start swimming I. Think I figured it out I. Remember, do I. Remember I remember. I took swimming lessons but I. Remember Knowing Dog Paddle. That was my dog out. I was like okay. See I just needed you to clarify that because people listening to this. Image is GONNA throw their kid in there. Thinking that all of a sudden we start doing the butterfly across the fucking pool. Dude I could never do the butterfly. That's one thing that I go. I wish I could do the butterfly. It looks so pretty. Does it. It looks like you're snow plowing a pool. Looks just that picture of you with your arms up in your face above the water, the goggles on I would love to have one of those. There's one hundred percent showing off. It is the most inefficient movement. Human being could ever do if they ever trying to get across the water that porpoise kick alone. Okay how much effort that takes and then to like rather than just the fluid. The crawl is the shit. That's what it is. That's.

How Tight and Loose Cultures Wire Our World

"What are social norms? So this is a great question and as a cross cultural psychologists. I tried to understand this really puzzling. Phenomena of culture culture is one of these puzzles because it's omnipresent. It's all around us but it's invisible like we tend to ignore it all the time and it's like the story of two fish. Were there swimming along? And they pass another fish. Who says how's the water boys and they swim on and wants US the other? What the Hell is water and for fish? This invisible thing is waterboy for humans. It's culture and a big part of culture is social norms or these unwritten standards for behavior that sometimes become more formalized in laws and rules but nevertheless we follow social norms all the time endlessly without even realizing it and we have to really understand their impact on social behavior. And that's why I wrote the book. That's so cool. Well thank you for writing it and for shyness late on this. But certainly there's individual differences in them like dark triad people. You know people who score high on the dark triad Scales and Machiavelli's and narcissism psychopathy. They they don't like social norms. They are versed. Do it. Well you know I've right in the book about sort of individual differences in people who like or dislike social norms rulemakers rube acres. You can think about the analogy of the chaos quarter. Muppets exactly like think about sesame. Street like the chaos. Muppets are like you know. Cookie Monster and you know and animal who loved to just create chaos. And don't follow rules by Ernie and Bert actually and Kermit the frog who love rules and I actually have tight-loose mindset quiz on my website where you can find out. Where do you veer in terms of mindsets people who like tightness really notice rules? They have a lot of impulse control. And they like structure. People who beer lose tend to ignore rules more often. They're more impulsive. But they're more creative and more open minded book. I talk about the advantages and disadvantages of this construct across levels from nations to neurons from states to organization. So it's something that I think about as a fractional pattern which is repeated pattern of phenomenon across different levels and I tried illuminate why titans differences evolve in the first place at Cross levels and what what consequence love the link that to creativity. Some people have. I wonder how that relates to some people. Argue that Asian cultures are less creative? You know then. Do you think that some of that can be explained by sort of the laser looseness titan of the culture itself? Yes so in our first analysis tight. Lucy was across thirty something nations where we were able to classify nations as veering Erg loose. Even knowing that all nations have tightened elements and some countries like Japan and Singapore China. Beer tighter than places like Brazil and New Zealand and the Netherlands Brazil anything goes indicators of Titus was the accuracy of clocks and how coordinated crops are city streets tight cultures the quad city streets. Pretty much say the same thing but in loose cultures like Brazil or Greece entirely. Sure what time it is because the clocks around you say a lot of different things and that speaks to something. That really is about the tight lose. Tradeoff tight cultures have a lot of order and loose cultures a lot of openness and that means that both have strengths and liabilities. Depending on your vantage point so your question about creativity. We have found that across nations across states. 'cause organizations that are tight. They tend to have less novelty idea generation than loose cultures by. What's interesting and we're finding this recently. Is that each. Has its own strengths. In terms of innovation. So who's cultures can create a lot of ideas but tight cultures can implement that much better so in fact both again have strengths that can be brought to bear on a common issue like innovation. Oh great have you read Richard Florida's work at all and the credit? Yeah the creativity class and yeah and at the city level. Also I think he's really staying. That's right because this also differs state by state within America rate. Do you think like is there a south difference versus? I don't know I don't WanNa grossly stereotype things without you. Actually telling me what the data says so in one of the chapter in the book. I talk about how we can move beyond red vs blue right right. In fact we have a paper in the Journal. Precedes National Academy that rank orders the fifty states into the tight and loose and often? You're saying that the South tends to actually of your tight. They have more strict rules. They have more order to some extent they have less creativity. They're also more polite so the route estates are the loosest states which tend to be on the coasts but those states had to have more creativity like like you surmised and so what got me does that we can kind of look at different different states now through a new Lens. One of the more important things that I talk about in the book is why these differences evolve in the first place and what we find across nation states etc is that groups. That have a lot of threat. Whether it's from Mother Nature like chronic disasters are famine or other human types of threats pathogens or population density or invasions tend to veer tighter. And the logic's pretty simple when groups have a lot of threat. They need rules to coordinate to survive and norm provide that they help people to actually control themselves in difficult situations and the titus states in the US tend to have more threat. They have more pathogens have more disasters and so forth and so there's some kind of logic to why groups evolved to be tighter loose. I mean with that sad and we could talk about it later. Threats now are whether perceived or real tend to produce the same psychology and. That's something nowadays that we're dealing with more. And more in terms of how tight who's manifesting itself in politics and in other contexts where threat is less objective and more

Missed lessons from the Ebola Outbreak

"This is Dr Michael Wilks. With a second opinion history in general and the history of medicine in particular is greatly underappreciated. For the lessons it can teach US scholars. Tell us that those who cannot remember. The past are condemned to repeat it. Well it seems that valuable lessons learned in the recent past around epidemics have been ignored and disregarded for example although there are differences between the novel Corona Virus Cova Nineteen and the abol outbreak. There are valuable lessons that we missed. What's similar between the two diseases is the fear the distrust of government recommendations the role of the family and spreading the disease the importance of social distancing and the lack of a plan to attack the illness. Dr Brian Bird is a leading veterinarian. An infectious disease epidemiologist and the associate director of UC Davis one health institute. He's worked on the front lines of the Bulla epidemic and other epidemics round the world. He says the major lesson we might have learned was simply to have a plan being prepared or at least having a plan to be prepared is is the key doctor Bert. Also points out that. When Ebola was first recognized in west Africa the concept of a spreadable lethal virus was a totally new concept. That virus was a completely new disease to the people living in that region. They had no experience with the boulevard versus much like the job. Now for Cove it just like with Corona early in the Ebola outbreak. There was also fear no testing and a huge need for socialized relation that tore families apart. There were no treatments or vaccines for either a bowl or Cova and there was a fragmented healthcare system required to care for a large number of sick people and there was no trust in the public health response to prevent the healthy from getting sick West Africa. Bola was a warning to the world. Bit viruses will emerge from relatively distant and remote places. But what we've done no places remote and distant anymore because of the transportation networks whether it'd be roads airplanes in disease management it is essential that people trust their government and believe that they are telling them the truth you look in West Africa. There was a period of time when there was a lot of mistrust and disbelief that the disease was real so in the early months there were large campaigns that just to say a bola is real. There were many opportunities to learn from the Ebola outbreak. That were missed. A lot of those lessons learned have been laid by the wayside because it was appeared that that diseases the disease over there not here. Dr Bird explains the health of the people depends on a strong and coordinated government response during the Ebola outbreak governments in west Africa. Were eventually very heavy handed. But communities came to understand that self isolation was in their own self interest governments need NBC Straw and have a consistent and thoughtful approach to how they want to tackle the emergencies of the day. Today there are important lessons. That could be learned. Some countries and states and cities that could greatly benefit others it requires a willingness to learn and an openness to recognize that. We are all very much in this together. This is Dr Michael Wilks with a second
