Federal judge rules New York must hold June primary canceled over coronavirus risks
"Race Andrew Yang strikes again well there's an old timey name you haven't heard the inter Yang yeah no Yang is a disruptive force in the Democratic Party at least this week he is because remember New York state and its board of elections had canceled their democratic primary for June twenty third and said not we're not gonna have it anymore we've got Joe Biden don't worry about it and for the health and safety of our people are not gonna have this and that was widely seen as something of a coup attempt because Bernie Sanders made it really clear when he quote endorsed Joe Biden but he still wants his own voters to vote for him even though he's out of the race another reason for that is because he wants to crude delegate delegate strength by the time he shows up at the convention whatever form that takes but the democratic convention if he's gotten a lot of delegates behind him he can use that to advance the more socialist elements of the democratic platform that he's interested in seeing and then that's why Bernie was doing that so in New York it was believed that this was an effort to basically say never out we're not going to participate in this game we're just gonna try to get as many delegates as we can over to Joe Biden and Bernie you can go home but what ended up happening yesterday thank Dan thanks Dan regarding a lawsuit he filed he's a federal judge ruled that New York must go forward with its presidential primary the judge U. S. district judge Anil Lisa Torah's of Manhattan made the ruling yesterday evening that they will hold the primary in June and that tore as ruled in favor of Yang and the lawsuit as it was filed by young's office and the young lawyers said this quote this unprecedented and unwarranted move infringes the rights of plaintiffs and all New York state Democratic Party voters of which are estimated to be more than six million as it is fundamentally denies them the right to choose our next candidate for the office of president of the United States the court agreeing there and saying that this that the removing that Alexion merry was unconstitutional interesting that inter Yang we get involved in this the old Yang gang has not broken up they got the gang back together looks like that's right interesting I guess he's a he's a Bernie bro now I guess he's making it known that he is part of the resistance within the Democratic Party with this little move either that or he just likes getting votes you know he's like he still has his name on the ballot again alongside a bunch of other people you realize this you about this June twenty third ballot will include Yang Sanders Warren and Michael Bennett Amy Klobuchar Tulsi Gabbard Michael Bloomberg digest of all Patrick Tom's tire all their names are gonna show up on that ballot in New York in June and that every I released a statement yesterday said quote I'm glad that a federal judge agreed that depriving millions of new Yorkers of the right to vote was wrong I hope the New York board of elections takes from this ruling a new found appreciation of their role in safeguarding our

"You can hear it the corruption of the Democratic Party which they see as getting behind bushmen feared that how he slurred the words I don't use that word to step yes terrible sure that's of the Bernie Bros got his television but we can't see the news media they can't they gotta stop saying that because the party doesn't want that to be the message Michael Moore is kami who loves the Castro brothers just like Bernie Sanders therefore he supports Bernie Sanders is an American millionaire of course and a creosote filled gas bag he also is obsessed with the establishment which is racist supporting Biden and not Bernie really the question has to be asked again of of of vice president Biden of Clinton for signal that they sent out what they said was the sickest centrally dog was the you know we might just have to stay with trump because we may not be voting for Bernie we may just have to stay with C. the establishment Democrats are saying well we'd rather have trump and Bernie that's what they that's what Michael Moore is a radical is an extremist he's crazy which is a big problem van Jones is on CNN he used a self described as a communist he I was at a a Obama administration official and certain to CNN actually hired him but he's a little more honest than most of the C. "Right the Bernie Bros are here this isn't a trump rally because that's who's dismissing that's that's who is causing the disruptions in Donald Trump rallies the Bernie Bros and so far the left your side the ones you excuse not Donald Trump not to Donald Trump supporters your side you were just disrupted by the Bernie Bros by hand to far they have nothing to do with Donald Trump other than those of the same people that disrupt the Donald Trump rallies are used to now they love to disrupt yours congratulations on that so I just want to just want to point out here just like the Democrats aren't the sexiest ones that stop you from having a woman as the nominee was your own party Donald Trump and his supporters did not cause trouble at your rally Joe that was your side that was eight to five that's the people you people have been dismissing and playing foot seas with but you're making progress I'm I'm sure now on the corona virus remember yesterday M. S. N. B. C. had as proof as proof but Donald Trump doesn't care about his supporters that he wouldn't cancel his rallies could we play that cut please use MSNBC that he is not willing to cancel his various rallies suggests that he is willing to place even his most ardent supporters at risk case studies were supposed got it that was the story yesterday you have to go into the time portal how many of us can even remember yesterday I know Joe Biden can't but how many of us can really remember what we were doing yesterday the apparently nobody in the media can because yesterday they were saying that was proof positive that that shows that he does not care about his supporters need I remind you while that was being said Joe Biden was at that rally with all those people there so do they not care and just by the way because you know he didn't know what the time he still doesn't know what the time is or where he's at or anything else but he didn't know about that from M. S. N. B. C. at the time so let's cut him some slack however can we cut to the D. N. C. the same slack because they yesterday came out last night and said we are not canceling our debate we're not going to cancel the debate on Sunday we're not gonna do it we're following what the Ripper seizures are well wasn't that what Donald Trump is doing what or at home gosh no hang on let me apply the truth let me apply the Democratic Progressive truth this is proof positive that the DNC not only doesn't care about their supporters they are taking the most vulnerable among us those with health problems health issues Bernie Sanders has a heart issue Joe Biden has a issue issue ended these he's gonna put they're going to put them in front of people somebody might get sick you're putting the most vulnerable do you not you don't not only care about your supporters you don't care about the elderly that's proof positive they don't care about the elderly in fact let me dare I say go a step further are they trying to kill their own candidates how lex clicks of them to put old people in front of a crowd thousands of which could be going they're trying to kill their own candidates and I find this absolutely these racist massaging his stick Hiller's all my gosh I can't believe all by the way one other thing Barack Obama of course he was a genius when he was putting kids in cages when Donald Trump decided you know we should lessen the kids in cages then that's in the media of course said Donald Trump water races for putting fewer kids in cages than Barack Obama did okay I got that one so now let's let's just look at the border because remember Donald trump is a racist because he said don't allow planes to come in from China where we were one of the first to do this in the world and Donald Trump only did it because he was a scene of phobic in fact that comment had to be delayed deleted from Chuck Schumer's timeline on Twitter because it was it became an inconvenient truth for him oh crap I did say that now how am I going to bash and when I'm on the record saying this quick I can delete it because I'm an old man and I don't understand that the internet is forever what do you mean I deleted it it's going I don't see it on my screen anymore what I do hope so now what we do because now Italy now China now Israel Korea Russia China closing their borders not nobody in nobody out there doing all of this we'll see what we do what what do we do now because because the president was Azeem Afobe for saying that nobody should fly in or out of China until we get a handle on this now that he is not closing our border our southern and northern border he's leaving those open he doesn't care he doesn't care but what we do because the you know that's gonna flip as soon as with the corona virus is going rampage in California and border states not because of Mexico but people will be coming here for the free health care that Bernie Sanders likes to promise when it's red but you're going to say we can't have people moving from state to state let alone country to country we need to know who's here and we're gonna quarantine well what do you do because that is that Xena phobic or is that responsible because I'm not sure which it is anymore because they keep changing it from Xena phobic to responsible this one Xena phobic that one exactly the same responsible him not doing exactly what we just said was responsible is irresponsible okay maybe he should do it that would be Xena phobic they don't see this end their their precious Bernie Sanders who sent his hair cut by the way it looks less like scuttle in little mermaid I just wanna say looks less like scuttle nice hair cut as as he is talking here's what he said about the border yesterday in the town hall if you had to would you close down the borders thank you no I mean what you don't want to do right now we have a president who has propagated up xenophobic anti immigrant sentiment rivals before he was elected exactly right exactly right except before he was running for president none of you said that because that isn't true that isn't true he is America first but as we're now finding out making sure that we have some essential industry like all I don't know our medical industry being able to make our own medicine in the country instead of being ninety eight point nine percent dependent on China not making that number up instead of instead of having all of our our antibiotics made in China maybe maybe not because of Xena phobia but because it's the smart thing to do we do put American industry first because we don't want to just be a buyer because when things go bad they may not be selling V. in radical hypocrisy of the Democratic Party on display right now is at its zenith I've never seen it this high this clear and it is why Donald Trump is going to challenge them and not because that nap and I say that usually I would say well but don't get cocky don't get cocky kid I learned that from Harrison Ford and all of the Star Wars don't get cocky kid okay I got it do you think there's anyone within the sound of my voice that has sat here and watch watch what they have done to our country to the president to the truth what they've done is there anyone within the sound of my voice that wants to vote for Donald Trump that is going to sit on the sidelines I don't care if people with corona virus that are zombies are trying to lick my face as I go into the pole I'm going in to vote I don't I don't use this because I just don't I don't I don't generally buy.
Why Mayor Pete Buttigieg thinks he's the one to beat Donald Trump
"Mir p footage welcome back to the podcast extra. Haven't been good to be back all right. Let's jump right on in a row. Is it too late to stop? Senator Bernie Sanders. No but it will be if we don't get our act together. Look we have a very clear choice as a party. Right now We can take his approach and I recognize that he speaks for a lot of ideal ideals that we share but it's also an approach that is about consolidating a base and pushing away. People disagree you at a moment when I think we have to be doing the opposite now. We're only three states in We're on the eve of the South Carolina primary then come Super Tuesday but we could wake up after Super Tuesday with no going back and I think it's time to really ask ourselves how we're GONNA move forward I'm with US. You said It will be if we don't get our act together. What does that mean? What does that look like? Get Our act together. Of course what I think that should look like is to rally around a candidate. Perhaps the one candidate to have actually beaten Bernie Sanders anywhere in the country cycle which Which is my campaign and a look at a vision that can make room for everybody. That is very progressive and set up in a way that that can actually reach out to independence and android some Republicans over the line to because I think that's how we're going to win in November So that's the case that I'm continuing to make that we cannot Expect to succeed against the president this divisive if we're sewing a different kind of division from our own side there's a better way and our campaign shows the promise of making that happen and you mentioned divisive and and Senator Sanders sent out a tweet. That caught a lot of people by surprise. Were wondering if it was a lot and not him but he really did send out a tweet that said. I've Got News Republican establishment. I've got news for the Democratic Establishment. They can't stop us. How how would give me a reaction to that? Well I think it reflects a worldview where the Democratic Party is the problem. And that's not how I see things I've I've never automatically felt like part of any establishment obviously Competing as I am as a as a mayor from South Bend Indiana and not exactly waiting my turn but to to say that the big problem in America right now is Democrats. I think Mrs what's going on what's going on right now. Is We've got a president who succeeded with a hostile takeover of the Republican Party and a sense that our party has not been able to connect with a lot of people who would benefit from our policies who are certainly capable of voting for us. Think of all the people who voted for President Obama Just a few years ago and then turned around and voted for president trump. We can't let that happen again and part of why. I was very excited. About how competitive we were in the Iowa counties for example the digits that they voted for President Obama sometimes twice and then swung over to president. Trump is that we don't have to have a repeat of two thousand sixteen in fact the less twenty twenty resembles two thousand sixteen in all respects. The better does it offend you. That a person who is a member of the Democratic Party continues to thunder against the people? He'll need to win the nomination and to govern if he were to win in November. Well let me say this. Ultimately we need to unite the country and uniting. The country begins with uniting the Democratic Party. If you think the Democratic Party is the problem or even sometimes engage in rhetoric that makes it sound like Democratic Party is the enemy while competing for the Democratic nomination. That is going to make it very challenging to actually bring folks together in the speed that we need to in order to compete in order to win. What do you say to his supporters if you are the nominee and he isn't because it is no secret that the supporters have Bernie Sanders so-called Bernie Bros? I've been a victim of them. Lots of journalists have lots of politicians have lots of regular everyday people have been What's the word the kids are using a third over? That's a new. Oh yeah saying saying remotely negative things about Bernie Sanders. What do you say to them? Well I'd say you have a decision to make if this is about personality. That's one thing but if this is about policy if this is about Raising wages for workers if this is about ensuring the corporations are held accountable. This is about doing something on climate before it's too late. I will be the most progressive president in our lifetimes. It's true that I believe that some of the proposals that come from Senator Sanders go too far and and are not going to be a past anyway but Just to be very clear I am running to be a I think also would be the most progressive nominee. We've had in recent memory so if this is really about the change you want to see in the world and not how much you you feel attracted to the personality of one or another candidate. Then I'm offering just that and I'm offering it in a way that I think could actually unite an American majority. That actually is with us on these things you you'd never realize from certainly from looking at the Senate or even from looking at some of the coverage is it. There is a powerful American majority right now then agrees for example that the public sector should step up and fix the healthcare problem. Just as long as we don't force it on too many people that agrees that minimum wages have to go. We gotta do something about gun violence. We've got to create a pathway to citizenship. When it comes to immigration we got to act on climate This is an American majority. Let's let's galvanize it not blow it up. That sounds great. But what is your. What is your path after Super Tuesday and I focused on Super Tuesday because we go in rapid succession from South Carolina to Super Tuesday on three days. What is Your Path? Well we need to have a good showing in certainly on Super Tuesday and I think that we will We just We're in Virginia. Yesterday had I don't know the final crowd count but it was the better part of ten thousand. People are out there with amazing energy Same thing when we were in Colorado on our way out after the the caucuses in Nevada and we're going to work to compete in in every one of those Super Tuesday states. Look the reality is. There's no quick way to win But we believe State by state election by-election a we can piece together what we need Provided that I can do the job of Of gathering the support of those who are skeptical about Senator Sanders approach and looking for a better way. Go back to the basically the beginning of this conversation where I ask you about If we don't get our act together and of course it's all you think it's about coalescing around you. But there are a lot of people who are saying all. The centrist so-called centrists in the campaign are taking votes away from each other in allowing Senator Sanders to run away with it What would happen or how does that happen if you are? Senator Coburn Senator Warren. Don't get out of the race. I mean at some point after Super Tuesday. There's going to be a clamour in the within the party. How do you make the case to the party? That you shouldn't be the one below drop I would say that. So so if folks are looking for an alternative to Bernie Sanders and believe that there needs to be fewer alternatives in order for anyone to make it. Why would you look to the one person who's actually beaten him anywhere in the cycle as the one that you would ask to step aside You know we. We have been able to Defy all of the pundits expectations we have been able to compete Especially in again those areas that we're going to need in order to defeat. Donald trump that vote democratic usually but haven't lately and we've got a track record of ahead of a lot of the other people who are going to be Looking at Looking to their left and looking to their rights. And you're GonNa make room for me at the end of the day Voters are going to settle this.
Breaking Down Bloomberg's First Debate
"Up on today's podcast. The ninth and possibly the liveliest democratic debate in Las Vegas. This was the first debate performance for Michael Bloomberg and the other candidates came out swinging. I like to talk about who were running against a billionaire who calls women fat broads and horseface lesbians and no. I'm not talking about Donald Trump. I'm talking about Mayor Bloomberg. It was also the first chance for Bloomberg to respond to criticism on the public stage. Here's an exchange with Senator Elizabeth Warren as she pressed him to release women employees from nondisclosure agreements that prevent them from talking about sexual harassment and discrimination in the workplace. I hope you heard what is defense was. I've been nice to some women. The mayor has to stand on his record and what we need to know. Exactly what's lurking out there? He has gotten some number of women. Dozens who knows to sign nondisclosure agreements. Both for sexual harassment and for gender discrimination in the workplace. So Mr Are you willing to release all of those women from those nondisclosure agreements? So we can hear their side of the story. We have a very few nondisclosure agreements. How many finish. How many of them accused me of doing anything? Other than maybe. They didn't like joke. I told and let me let me play agreements between two parties. That wanted to keep it quiet and that's up to them. They signed those agreements and we'll live with taxes you know from all sides and just want to show everybody a quick exchange between Bernie Sanders and Mike Bloomberg believed it Democratic Socialists. Working People not billion as healthcare for all educational opportunities. Chopstick we have the best known socialists. In the country happens to be a millionaire with three houses. But I miss here. Well you'll still work in Washington housewives. The first problem live in Burlington House too. That's good and like thousands of other Vermont. Subba cap to give me for that whereas your home which talks which tax haven New York New York City. Thank you very much on my taxes. And I'm happy to do it because I get something for. Bloomberg also drew negative reaction from the audience for his comments on releasing his tax retur variously transparency Mayor Bloomberg. Your campaign has said that he would eventually release your tax records when it comes to transparency but people are already voting now why should Democratic voters have to wait? It just takes us a long time unfortunately or fortunately fortunately I make a lot of money and we business all around the world and we are preparing. The number of pages will probably be the thousands of pages. I can't go to turbo tax but I put up my tax return every year for twelve years in City Hall. We will put out this one. It says tells everybody everything they need to know about every investments that I make and where the money goes and the biggest item is all the money I give away and we list that every single donation I make and you can get that from our from our foundation anytime you want. And this was Bloomberg's response to whether he supported Senator Bernie Sanders proposal. That would require all large companies to turn over up to twenty percent of their ownership to employees overtime absolutely not. I can't think of a ways that would make it easier for Donald Trump to get reelected and listening to this conversation ridiculous. We're not going to throw out capitalism. We tried that other countries tried that was called Communism and it just didn't work again. That was an answer that actually agreed with. There was some people who said that's not the answer you given a Democratic primary. That it's an answer you would give if you were in the actual campaign against president trump but that was the one that really resonated with me with. Yeah okay. Honest answer on that part of Ari Fleischer on twitter last night tweet aways going on saying that. He couldn't fathom how the whole Party that nobody in the party when they're asking their capitalism everybody's there with the exception maybe of Mayor Bloomberg I think Amy Klobuchar also said that she was a capitalist of believe in capitalism. But you know you know how everybody gone mad that this is just not what it is but by the way I mean Look Bernie. Sanders calls himself a socialist. Whether it's a democratic socialist or whatever you WANNA call the it's strange led a little bit of circa firing squad feel for me or someone said a gun fight in a lifeboat or something like that. But but what what I'm coming to realize is that Bernie is in the stage. Yep He's got grassroots. He Does Sport. And these people are gonNA turn out and if he just keeps winning and winning and winning. I don't know what you do. There's a difference between the democratic establishment and millions of of Democrats. That are voting for him. And you can't just say no. We don't like the way this looks so we don't like our prospect and who knows what the prospects really are. You never knew. He may have some people think he might one four years ago if he so. I've always been a Bernie Bro and BRO now. Well no Birdie Bro. If I had to pick I'm not sure at this point I immediately came in and I said to you this morning. What else you got sick Bernie because you think that makes it better or ascribe any type of weird and just let's is beyond her hand in a while snow but seriously that's the sixty came up. You got anything got anybody else you got it. We're shoulders Howard Schultz. Is he done? He's definitely divall Patrick and he come back and Bloomberg's campaign seemed to acknowledge his difficulty with this last night. I think he got better at the end to answer at the end was a fairly strong answer. His campaign said he's just warming. I mean the. What's the the reason the night? By the way do you know Neil Patel? We've had on the program. The rights that that Bloomberg is the gap that Bloomberg's performance the gap between an influence or marketing campaign and putting an actual product in front of reviewers. And I thought that captured beautifully Ashley happening here and I think it is online he. He's you know if you had sixty billion dollars you really do start thinking that you just might us man and when it comes to the woman whatever you want to say it but when it comes down when when the rubber meets the road you really do have to debate and you need to be good and fast and strong and all those things none of which and I started feeling. Sorry for he did. Have everybody coming after is not something we really happy. Start Feeling. Sorry for him. But there's an old adage in its most Jewish things don't ever feel sorry for someone has a Gulfstream jet. You just never never feel sorry for someone who has a g six V you just. Shouldn't I mean there could be things that happened? They can always fall. But you still felt sorry for. It'd be because as you know and I've said it a million times. Maybe he's not a great debater isn't clearly but if you look at what? I what he did in the city in the public sector and then the private sector. We're different we're different on what we think is competent and a nanny. State to me is competent. Well no no. Other major initiatives took it was. Well run under Giuliani to look at him now than in your eyes. I mean you think he's like a lunatic. Look let's just leave it at Bernie Bro- stick with that. He's in the center. He's at fifty eight percent. Something on League dictums on CNBC earlier. This week I don't know if it was yesterday the day before and I guess. He said that he thinks. Bernie Sanders bigger threat to the markets. Then they'd run a virus and your lights night's performance. You wonder if there's anybody who's GonNa stop along the way but the market and took the Marlboros. Go UP THE STRONGER. He gets because he's a could be another McGovern. I'm not I'm not coming out of my no. Well we know what you think but put the markets aside. Let's Talk Real Economy Bernie Sanders. Wins Your CEO in America. You're see on America's because this to me is really to one thing Mike Bloomberg was right about okay. Bernie can't win but no I'm saying if Bernie wins I think that every ceiling American not to Bernie San monkeys flat out of my reread to leave the set. Look by the way people can carry where he says the same thing trump right and even even two months before he won. People would don't really you don't really think that's the same thing. No I'm not saying it's health your honest opinion of what is Bernie's if you had to bet all your money on what. What are his chances for winning? Is it twenty five percent? Do you think it's that high winning? In general winning in the general we in the journey and the general third no more than you think a third see. I think that's I don't think it's a third what was weird less gets overwhelming at all. No I think it's I think in becomes very what would there have to be more. I don't know what would happen. He'd have to be the nominee and something else anyway. Joining us right now with reaction to last night's debate pollster and political strategist frank. Bunce FRANK WANNA get your action to all of this. I think the whole night was challenging moment. I WANNA take you back to two thousand twelve when Rick. Perry was moving three or four points a week in the race against Mitt Romney. He participates in the first debate. And he's destroyed and it ends his candidacy. I think Mike Bloomberg we will look back at this debate potentially as the beginning of the end because he did not come across as prepared and more importantly I don't think captured the tone of the audience that he doesn't understand that there are more women than men who are Democrats that they don't like this Aggressive behavior and I don't think in Blooberg defense of capitalism against socialism. He doesn't realize that. So many Democrats prioritize socialism over Frank. I WanNa ask you about the preparedness issue. Because he I know we'll say he only got into this campaign ten ten weeks ago but he's been preparing for this for a very very long time. How could he not have been more prepared? Well and what were the right answers to some of these questions? Well I so I want viewers to know that I did work for Bloomberg in two thousand one and back then. He doesn't like language. He doesn't like debates he doesn't like that. Kinda give and take that's not what he's about. The problem is it's what the Democrats are about and he should've known that these candidates who are going to take him on frankly. I don't know what the response is for the challenge about the nondisclosure agreements in terms of capitalism vs socialism. He's GonNa Remember. You should know that. The average Democrat is working class. The average Democrat is middle income and having a capitalism vs socialism debate among the average Democrat. Bloomberg's GonNa lose that and Bernie Sanders and the reason why is leading right now is going to win that contest. Frank do you believe Bloomberg will follow through on his promise to spend another half a billion dollars defeating Donald Trump on one of these people that just you know completely eviscerated him last night. Have you think once he realized you just said maybe it's the beginning of the end of his candidacy? He sees it. He's not going to be the candidate. Will he follow through and spend another four or five hundred million dollars on somebody else well? He's not done because we still have a South Carolina debate coming up and Super Tuesday. If you look at the state by state polling Bloomberg is actually taken the lead in some of these states doesn't if you said that it's probably the beginning of the end it was. Do you believe he will follow through and spend his money to defeat? Donald Trump by backing Bernie sanders or the eventual nominee is. Do you believe he'll do? I think Mike Bloomberg will have a problem backing Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren because he simply disagrees with them ideologically on their economic last night's performance by Elizabeth. Warren puts her back in the game in a way that she might not have been just Twenty four hours ago. I'm going to surprise you but my answer is no because I don't like Democrats attacking Democrats they want you to focus on donald trump but that's what Bernie Sanders has been doing so successfully and he seems to be the runner. And that's exactly. Why is the Front runner and Elizabeth Warren Attacking Buddha judge as well as Bloomberg? I don't think that sits well with the average Democrat. I'm will tell you know. Sandra has been attacking his his competitors in this race. No He's been speaking clearly and loudly and pronounce way in a position that for the center of the Democratic Party. And they like what he's saying and he is going to trump more than the rest of them I think last night was a good good debate night for Sanders because he clearly articulated a point of view that none of you may agree with but for the center of the Democratic Party. Remember this is not the center of America for the center of the Democratic Party Bernie. Sanders speaks to them. He's emotional he's passionate and it's the reason why he's now the front runner and what we got to run but what happens if if he is the nominee against trump given what you know given what okay. What are your odds for the first time ever ever on a TV program? I will say that trump will have the narrowest of advantages narrowest inch. Yes that's all that's all this going to be a brawl. It's going to be ugly selection ever and even though centers outside the mainstream the press will protect him. The media does not want trump elected. It will come down to election day. New Hampshire Primary Election Results 2020
"Let's return now to the results of the New Hampshire primary key win for Bernie Sanders terrible night for Joe Biden. The first one either while while sound is is so far at least winning the race for Democrats supporters can he convert that into the wider political appeal that he would need to defeat. Donald Trump in November. Joining me to discuss that and some of the day's other top stories are Vincent Vinny. UK correspondent for Euronews and political analyst and former BBC political correspondent. Kara okay. I'm carol normally. If you label anybody in American politics anything in American politics a socialist you might as well call them Communists Ernest. It's it's it's completely fatal and you can see candidate sanders going up against trump and socialists. Being about the only thing Donald Trump says for the next six months absolutely Leeann I think socialism socialist does have different connotations in the United States. It's still something where Donald Trump can successfully whip hop certainly a part part of the American electorate against him. I think what's interesting here is that yes last night was a good night for Bernie Saunders. But he was only a fraction ahead of Pete. Booty judge and we've seen Amy Klobuchar also showing very strongly. There's quite a long way to go in this race Bernie Sanders. This is in many ways. The Jeremy Corbyn of American politics. He's got this very powerful loyal. Fan Base significant pecan grassroots support activists who go out there and campaign for him but he's a very divisive figure. He's divisive even within the Democratic Party. And as I think you suggested that there are many even within the Democratic Movement who think that he is just too left-wing to socialist too radical to win over the number of votes the center ground to win votes back from Donald Trump. I mean Vincent. Those I had some voters being interviewed yesterday. Who Democrats who said? Look if it's if it's Bernie. We're not GONNA win. You might as well not even have the election because trump's in trump's GonNa win the election is there that sense and I suppose there is a parallel here to something we'll discuss later in the Labor Party in the UK. The sounders does very well with activists goes very well with committee diehard Democrats who are going to vote Democrat anyway but it's that question of whether he can win over those voters in the middle the ones who voted for a bomb but then voted not for trump as a two things on this. The first is yeah. There's obvious parallel with Jeremy copen hip. There's an obvious parallel with Donald Trump. Someone who wasn't a Republican came in as the fringe is candidate managed to get a strong movement behind him that really supports them then took over the party. And we're seeing the same thing with Bernie Saunders in. He has this movement that he carried forward Ford from the last election. He never ready suspended parts of his campaign the going through the last couple of years and now he is. He's still registered for the next senatorial race as an independent not even as a Democrat. And so he's coming. He's reregistered as Democrats run. He is running away with it. In these first two states and for the other candidates you know De de Joe Biden is basically what Bush was last time round. You Know Jeb. Bush even brought his. You know his brother former two-time president his dad on board the campaign and still couldn't make a breakthrough so we're seeing that same thing with Joe Biden. We'll see whether he he's GonNa Mention Obama even more in the build up to South Carolina but really now he is pretty much out of this this and if the Democrats want to get moderate candidate will clover shirt. You've got Warren. You've got pete. They and Bloomberg is well. Of course it's not forget they now need to pick one one of them and the others need to fall away. Otherwise they're going to be so split that Bernie Sanders is going to run away with this and the second thing to say is there is an ugly side to the Sanders Campaign Ryan as well. We saw it again. Last night. Cynthia Nixon the actress from sex in the city who try to become New Yorker Governor recently and is now a Bernie supporters. She had to shut down a crowd out who booed when Hillary Clinton's name was mentioned. And we're seeing there. Is this kind of vindictive side and Bernie's campaign the Bernie Bros.. Who are turning off mainstream even Democrats so it remains to be seen if Bernie can bring parties together because there are people unhappy with his conduct? The last election in Calvin mentioned some of the sort of people seen seen as the middle ground candidates. The aim Who did very well yesterday? But he's done well in in both the people around him seem to be trying to frame him now now as twenty twenty s version of Obama as the outside of that no one had heard of. Who's going to storm through the race? But I mean is he is he. Is he in Alabama a Buddha Jiji. You're talking about now. We'll look. He has clearly got charisma. He's young Buddy lacks experience I think it's very difficult to see how he could win over those saunders supporters. Just as. It's very difficult indeed to see. How Bernie Ernie Saunders can win over those that larger number of motors? I think what's interesting if you look at what happened last night Saunders was the victor there were about a third of the votes went to Saunders Elizabeth Warren on the more radical wing of the party more than half went to the others who more or less centrist. But as Vincent was pointing out They've got to make up their minds. Because if that memorial memorial vote is split between several different candidates Then there is a strong possibility that saunders come through the middle. I think we do have to watch out for Michael Bloomberg Berg who has fought this rather on docks campaign of skipping housed on all these primaries but his spending he spent since the beginning of the year more than three hundred million dollars on advertising and advertising campaign. That's getting through too much larger numbers than and these political events which perhaps only capture a small amount of the electorate now. He's a bit of an unknown quantity But he we'll certainly feel looking at the fact that there's no other really clear front runner at the moment that he still has to be in there with Jones. Obviously we will learn more. We we get to Super Tuesday at the beginning of March not may well be the death knell for Joe Biden. If he's not able to to to get anywhere but we never parallels British and American politics and in the general election in the UK. Back in December. You bumped into people said the choice I've been given is a hard right conservative government or hard left Labor government Vote is actually. Don't feel they sit in the middle in the end of the vote is did break left him right pretty much consistently if you go through that in America if it sounded Zondo's trump then what happens to those middle ground. American voters is the reason. No third party candidate has ever done anything other than screw up the mathematics the electoral college so presumably they all just going to have to pick a side. Yeah people always you know early on campaign people worried about Tulsi Gabbard splitting the Democrat. Vote but but I think just to go back on one part of your question. A we call Joe Biden now on one thing is that he polls extraordinary high with black voters and has ninety-nine percent name recognition in America. When we get to the next one which is South Carolina very You know African American state. He might surge ahead that it was interesting that he actually. He left New Hampshire last night before the result and he had a rally in South Carolina and then with Super Tuesday much more diverse state. So he could pull stuff back Because because you know Pete Bootleg does very poorly with black voters. Amy Club shells also good issues as a time as a lawyer in in terms of criminal issues that she prosecuted And so do you know. It's not absolutely so not yet but yeah it is for a lot of people. You Know Bernie. Democrats will have the same problem that Republicans had with trump. Is it. Do you just hold your nose and vote for him can burn. He put through a message of we have to get trump out which is what Joe Biden has been trying to do. You might not think I've got all these you know snazzy new policies but I'm just the take back the soul of America get trump out and what what the camp has to do behind Bernie is to really say say you know you have to hold your nose and vote for him just to get trump out but his policies and particularly an attack. I heard last night. The hadn't heard before with Bernie is you know. He took his honeymoon in the. US are before the Iron Curtain fell now in America that is going to play so bad and I think we're going to hear a lot more about that in the next couple couple of weeks

"Who and what do you think as president? He would make his first act his first one hundred days his first year. What's let's Bernie GonNa dive into? I think healthcare. He's very passionate about healthcare. He's passionate about his medicare for all crusade the idea that the United States of America should join every other major. Get your country on earth in guaranteeing healthcare to every man woman and child this is not a radical idea in fact poll after poll shows a majority of the American people support. That idea people want to know. I think it's obvious that we're not gonNA pass a bill. That's expensive is that as expensive as Bernie's Medicare for all. Yeah as as expensive as as his proposal. I think the real view from his team is that you need someone who is committed to fighting against the special interests that block this kind of action. That anything you do right whether it's the modest prescription drug pricing reform. That House Democrats are trying to do whether whether it's the bipartisan reform. On surprise billing that is kicking around the Senate. All of these things get blocked by the exact same nexus of interest groups who lead the opposition to Medicare for all. So you may as well just see what you can get out of an actual legislative process. But I think they think you will get the most by naming the bad guys and and taking them on so Bernie of course wrote the Danville. We've heard it a million times at this point but he isn't the only person supporting the damn bill anymore. So why Bernie the over someone say like Elizabeth. Warren who at least at some point has said that she's on board with a similar kind of plan. So I agree I mean I I actually think in terms of legislative outputs. You're not I'm not GONNA see a huge difference between Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren or even Bernie Sanders and budejovice. Amy Klobuchar or Biden because the way legislation works is it depends on Congress right if you really. Your primary consideration is what bills are gonNA pass like. You should focus on the Senate race in Maine Senate race in Arizona Senate race in Colorado Colorado. That's what's going to determine it not the choice of president but the most far out there Bernie Sanders. Proposals are not going to become law. No matter what happens you're gonNA GONNA get the same kind of incremental change however you want but if you want to sort of unified Democratic Party taking the fight to trump taking the fight to republicans and selling the based on the need for compromise. There's nobody better than sanders to Bernie never sells it that way. Do you think he believes that. Do you think he believes that. Once he gets into office office he will be the People's champion and thus temper his ambitions. I think that Bernie understands that. It is hard to pass bills hills and that there's not going to be like a parting of the clouds and all obstacles vanish. But I think he also rightly thinks that some of the people who preach pragmatism mm-hmm are in fact being influenced by money and campaign contributions and lobbying and their desires and that people look and they say why have Democrats been talking. Talk about lowering prescription drug costs for twenty years right. How is it that that never gets done? And it's not because nobody knows that you may have to trim your sails a little. Our are make deals very popular ideas. Wind up not happening up. Because of the influence of money in politics right and it's not that a sanders presidency. NC eliminates all of those obstacles that means that you will have a president who is making bargains literally because vote counts not because of the impact of of money so if there is a president sanders if he does need to compromise his agenda. What are those compromises actually look like you think I think some form of a public option of opening up of Medicare he actually cosponsored a public option? Bill back in the two thousand sixteen cycle before raising his aspirations. And then things on prescription drug costs. That's that's an issue that he has been a champion of forever and that mainstream Democrats are increasingly comfortable with but they've never quite sealed. The deal on cutting prescription drug costs. I think you've sanders is in the White House. This guy's been fighting Pharma For decades and he is going to tell everyone like we are going to get this done last style and and they really will. It's funny though because what you're talking about like a public option for example is essentially like the compromise position that bided at closure arguing for against Bernie's Medicare for all but this is the perversity of American politics. Right is Barack Obama runs and wins on public option platform. Yeah so you get the with no oh public option you run and win on a Medicare for all platform. You might get a public option. If you're lucky right. The president always gets less than what he ran on right. Because of the dynamics in Congress I wonder you know you talk about Bernie to essentially rallying this coalition of supporters from the left but also the center center. You've got people like James Carville talking to our colleague Sean. Noling last week about how. He's scared to death about sanders ability to beat trump too to unify the left as well as centrists. Tell me about the argument. That Bernie could actually do that. How do you see it happening so look? We can look at People's electoral track track records right. Some politicians do better than average in their home state and some do worse and it is a hundred percent true. The politicians who do better than average are typically Lee moderates Joe Mansion is one of the great over performers in the US Senate but Bernie Sanders is also and overperform. You look at any year that he was on the ballot and there was also presidential election. Nineteen Ninety to nineteen ninety-six. Two thousand. It's happened over and over again and he runs ahead of the Democratic ticket right. It's not like every leftist. Does that That that's untrue at all but Bernie Sanders does. He is a very effective politician. He is an effective campaigner. And you don't he. Does it a few different ways. One is his personal reputation for integrity. The other is this whole weird thing where he's not really a Democrat. It seems to help him get the votes of people who go. For third parties that there was a lot of Perot Sanders Crossover votes. There was a lot of Stein Sanders crossover votes but even Johnson Sanders Crossover. It's the people who are suspicious of party politics and business as usual sanders seems like a free thinking person a person of integrity somebody who they can trust. It's hard hard to scale that up from Vermont to nationwide but it should give people like Carville people who worry about electability some sense of reassurance that like this is a guy who has run and wine and and done very very well in those elections I mean Vermont is obviously not a swing state. But he's doing better than Barack Obama better than Hillary Clinton better than Bill Clinton in his home state and as we move in our heads to the hypothetical of Bernie actually running against president trump. I wonder how does Bernie Fair against someone who wants to paint him and his his friends. AFC as just socialists and scare people into winning votes if it was me if you could go back in time and have Bernie Sanders. There's not call himself a socialist. I would definitely take that people who think that's a handicap. They are correct Socialism is a label at polls very poorly. But he's been calling himself a socialist for a long time. He's been making it work. And the other advantages. Republicans have been calling every Democrat. They run against a socialist for a long time and to an extent. You Know L. Dixon political party to Cry Wolf on this over there. It seems as though far left. Socialist ideology is increasingly becoming mainstream Democratic Party doctrine. This socialism has never worked if they're so interested in it. Why don't they go to Caracas? Or what I wanted to go someplace where they've tried it a vote for any Democrat in twenty eight twenty and a vote for any Democrat. Tomorrow and North Carolina is a vote for the rise of radical socialism and the destruction of the American American dream. Trump got forty six percent of the vote back in two thousand sixteen and it's not just that he lost the popular vote. He was below fifty percent in Florida Arizona Zone and North Carolina. He's below fifty as to the question is not so much. How do you appeal to swing voters who are due? I like trump to a not like trump. But it's how how do you get all of the anti-trump voters together and I think sanders is uniquely. Well positioned to bring those third party voters and to get them to vote Democrat. I think that's the strongest electability argument for him. I went walking that ribbon of highway. I saw me endless skyway. Never forget the Bernie Sanders record the polk album in the eighties Bali. I don't know if Matthew yglesias has recorded any folk albums yet but he hosts the weeds. And you wrote about Bernie. What's the argument in favor of Vermont? Senator Bernard Sanders Kita. The argument is his electoral. Electoral performance is a lot better than people realize. He's been a more pragmatic legislator than a lot of people realize and I think in a way he could be a unifying candidate that brings trump's opponents together and wins the election in November. Which fundamentally is what mainstream Democrats want? Okay well let's get into it. I mean let's talk about his legislative history and legislative agenda. I think one of the arguments against Bernie is that he actually hasn't accomplished much in the Senate. Is that a fair argument his legislative. I just think agenda is very expensive what I think is important to understand about sanders. Though is that he's not somebody who has blown up the need it compromises right. He defects sometimes. A bill is going to go through the Senate with eighty votes and he casts a No. He says we should hold out for more when they needed. Every Democrat Gamma crat to vote for the affordable. Care Act when they needed every Democrat to vote for the Dodd. Frank Bill for the Obama Stimulus For anything like that. He is there. This stimulus. Package is is not perfect but it will go a long way in Vermont and throughout this country to rebuild crumbling infrastructure move us to energy independence sustainable energy protect working families hurt by this recession and most importantly create millions of good paying jobs. He understands how the political system works. And when you have to take half a loaf he was known own in the House of Representatives for getting a lot of bipartisan amendments passed Senator John McCain of Arizona and I have tried our best the come forward with an agreement. It's an agreement which I'm sure he is. Not One hundred percent happy about and I can fully assure you I am not one hundred percent happy about. I would have written a very very different. So it's true. He's not the greatest legislative titan in the history of the Senate but he's also not this ignoramus that some of his supporters on twitter. Her sometimes seem like he's been a member of Congress for a long time. He knows how hard it is to get coalitions together for bills and he knows the importance of making compromises to get things things done so I don't think there's any reason to worry that as president he would be unable to deal with the realities.

"Thank you thank you? Let me say tonight that this victory here is the beginning of the end. FOR DONALD TRUMP UP L.. Nilsson tell the people where you are. Where did you reporting for votes from right now? So I am in the Field House of southern New Hampshire University where Bernie Sanders just addressed a very loud. The crowd people are hugging each other. I don't know if you can hear that but there are some chanting going on over here. It was kind of funny seeing Bernie like a man who doesn't doesn't smile that often I feel like he was just beaming. When he came came out tonight and address? People do any of his followers of editing. Interesting to say to you while you were there tight here especially the ones that have been with him in two thousand sixteen feel oh like they have never been this close to him winning the nomination like I think that there's this palpable feeling that he could really do it. This time Especially especially if he does well with with black voters and Latino voters that that he has a real path to the Democratic nomination and people here. We're really excited about that. What the other thing was? I actually talked to somebody who was from Berlin Germany. Who came all the way out here? I mean he I think he he works in the. US Ask sometimes but He he volunteers volunteering with this sanders campaign for the past few weeks along with he said some people from Norway and some people from Denmark sure they love socialism out there yeah. I Love Democratic Socialism out there and I mean yeah I mean he was sort of saying like he has certainly never never been this excited about a an American candidate. I mean he was just saying it's really exciting to see a candidate fighting so openly for a lot of the things that Europe already be has basically a lot of the programs that they already have. And how is turnout tonight. People were saying that the turnout in Iowa didn't Great Democrats are planning to beat Donald Trump in the general election election. How was it tonight New Hampshire? It was actually better than than twenty sixteen levels according to some of the initial reports that we saw. I'm not ready to make any big big predictions yet on how this could impact general election turnout but the other thing is you know. It's also hard to judge because there was no competitive Republican Primary Mary here so it's tough to tell how Republicans might also turn out in the general election. How about second in third? How other people do yes? So I mean the big surprise tonight was With Amy Klobuchar. There had been some polling recently showing that she was doing all of a sudden a lot better than expected. But you have to remember. She came out of Iowa in fifth place and I think that the big turning point for her in New Hampshire came from a combination of a lot of people that were still undecided and didn't know who they wanted to support maybe some more voters that we're looking at more moderate candidates and she had a really good debate performance here last week. I think that you know a lot of times debates. Don't necessarily change things in a race. But at this in this case it seemed like people started having these internal conversations and dialogues this weekend even up until the final day or two you. So what does this mean for the campaigns of Elizabeth Warren and Joe Biden or they kinda now on life support. Yeah I mean Biden. Biden didn't even stick around in New Hampshire surfer. His election party tonight. He went straight to South Carolina and address his New Hampshire supporters from there so he is really really hoping that he can kind of bolster his his support in his campaign among African American voters in South Carolina and Let's voters in Nevada. OUGHTA but I mean he has now lost and lost badly. I mean he came in fourth place in Iowa and he came in fifth. Place this in New Hampshire. That's not just a loss that's like a trouncing and so I just think that making a pitch especially making a pitch on electability abilities have voters in Nevada and South Carolina is GonNa be really tough when you have the record. That Biden has so far and as far as Warren. I mean this is a really tough state for her hurdle lose I mean she is a Massachusetts senator. So she's from right over the border. She was a well known entity in New Hampshire. It's not like she was starting with low name recognition like her her campaign sent out a memo today about their path forward and talking about some of these more diverse. She's going to be campaigning in Virginia. Pretty soon but this is not good for her and her campaign was counting on some momentum and they just did not get that tonight at all but it was an even tougher night for two who of the candidates who dropped out right. Yes so Andrew Yang and Colorado Senator Michael Bennet both dropped out tonight and I. I think both of them were kind of pinning a lot of their hopes on New Hampshire. I mean Andrew Yang had spent a lot of time campaigning. Here and I mean I had heard from a lot of voters that said that they really liked him and they really liked his message. I was kind of going into election night looking to see if he would get some sort of bump but I just think that people full were so concerned with electability. This year that I think a lot of folks didn't really want to throw their vote to somebody who was unknown and two. They didn't really think could it'd be trump And the same thing with Michael Bennett. I mean he had staked his entire campaign on New Hampshire but he just hadn't really been getting any traction for months. He had been unstuck at somewhere between zero and one percent in the polls campaigning. Like the old New Hampshire way he was doing all these house. Parties that Lauren. Children talked about in Tuesday's episode and he just wasn't getting anywhere. He was gaining no traction so he had the college tonight. Well you know what L.. I think before we go to the break. We're GONNA take a minute to remember our friends. Senator Michael Bennet Andrew Young. Okay sounds good..

I wanted to abate with or whatever and so we felt super in love in D- then like about six months into our relationship he we got pretty severe depression which was something that he had struggled with for a while and he got really really down. He couldn't go to the doctor to get medicine or anything like that because he wasn't insured he didn't have the money and then when he died from his depression. Yeah Yeah it's incredibly fucked up. It's one of the most fucked up. Perhaps the most fucked up thing. That's ever Amer happened. and seeing just the ways that are society failed him and just you know it like I feel like in this situation like it's impossible to say that. The definitive reason that he died from depression was because he couldn't go to the doctor. But I know that when when he was able to Medicaid his impression at a time when he did have access to medicine it was. I don't know he was just able to function a lot better and he he had and some serious mental illness in a I do truly believe that he would be alive today. If we had medicare for all that woman with your boyfriend was is what sparked the fire for you right. Yeah absolutely I mean I wasn't I think by the time I dated him in like twenty eight. I was no longer like against against Bernie but I couldn't have seen myself becoming like a passionate Bernie supporter. So after he died I I became really good friends with a lot of his friends and I feel like a big way that we have been just handling wrongful. Death is to be you know very active and trying to get Bernie elected because we really believe in Medicare for all you know. I think all of us feel like we just WanNa make. I'm sure that happens to someone we really love doesn't happen to other people's friends family. You know it just. It doesn't feel political GEICO anymore for me. It feels very real so your about to talk to staff. How are you feeling about that? If feels a little nerve wracking the talk to someone who yeah I know may not like me or may have a lot of ideas about what. I'm Mike or something but I don't know I guess I feel like a little bit optimistic. I stick that like she said in her bio that she was a feminist. Like I my hope is like maybe she finds out that I'm also feminist in you care about many of the same issues that maybe she would feel less Miami Hey.

"Here. Is Kate should jump right into it. Yeah let's do it okay. Kay Hi hi how are you good. How are you okay? We're doing a podcast. I am so excited to make this more personal for a moment Tell me about you okay. So I'm a stand up comedian. I'm a feminist administ- when did you start honing your your comedy voice. So it's funny like I think when I started comedy I was writing a lot about like sleeping with like crappy guys like the problem that I was having at the time it was. Can I be grows on this earth. There was a time of my life. Where like the truly worst thing in my life was that there were some bad people who had cool Dick's and I was so upset about about this? It was I was really really really but you know I think now I just I do feel the injustice of what's happening in our society right now because they just had a very direct and crushing experience variance of it. So I think a lot of it is coming out of my joke writing but you know I actually want to. I want to ride jokes about all kinds of things. I think my stand up is a little bit less S. political the my twitter. I guess one of the reasons why I feel compelled to tweet about Bernie lie is because I do. Do you think there is this. Stereotype of the Bernie Bro. That seems to be incredibly persistent. So I like to tweet jokes about Bernie that have like a feminist feminist. Take you you know and I think that I mean. I don't know how many people still believe in like the Bernie Bro thing but like I feel like it's important to can I get the perspective out there. There's some feminist reasons for supporting Bernie and I also just like writing jokes. Yeah you tweeted and I think this was in November. Yeah you tweeted. I relate to Elizabeth Warren because when I say have a plan for that it also means I'll think about doing it in three years. Yes so what inspired fired you to tweet back. I remember like she released her Medicare for all plan and I was mad that she wanted to pursue a public option before she pursued Medicare for all so I was like feeling the fire and I talk about that also that I was procrastinating on writing stuff that I need in writing at the same time like yeah. I felt like a lot of my political jokes or like a mixture of like things that are going on for me internally and like how I like project urging them on to other political situations or cannon oh listen I think you just nailed humanity and like how politics works MHM You're not alone but you can make a joke hurts. Yeah I to me. It felt like a betrayal. Like all right. Well she's not serious. About pursuing s you know or it's not like at the forefront of priorities at least Ito so this tweet got very popular. Yeah and it blew up. Many of your tweets do not to Brag with a twitter celeb- and and so this week blew up. You got a lot of responses to it. Yes I did of the many comments under that tweet. There was one woman named Steph. Who tweeted us? Why is it? That Bernie stands can't can't stop themselves from being pieces of Shit. How did you feel when you read that? I felt like it was a little over the top I was I was you know it was. It was like a mixture of like I was like mad but then I was also kind of filter. Felt unfair to me because like my joke was about Elizabeth Warren procrastinating. It wouldn't be fair with something you identified with yes exactly and it was like you know I. I tried to put some care into my jokes even an making fun of like Warren or something to like make sure that's not misogynistic and you you know like progressive knitting can be done by all exactly. Yeah Procrastination Platform Yeah..

"Online disagreements and move them onto a phone call. Sometimes I speak so hello to my own detractors. And other times I moderate between guests today. I'm doing the ladder. Now if you've been at all keeping up even casually with American political news you'll know that there is a Democratic presidential primary going on two of the front runners are Elizabeth Warren a senator from Massachusetts and Bernie Sanders a senator her from Vermont. Both candidates run on largely progressive left leaning promises and from the outside. They seem pretty similar. Now if you don't live in the United States or or you do and you're listening to this in the near or distant future but the relentless new cycle has completely washed away your memory of this time. That's okay because this story. His unfortunately timeless and universal to politically similar candidates run against each other and their competition plays out more fiercely among their respective supporters supporters. This of course translates into online fights vicious verbal exchanges between people who are nearly ideologically identical to each other from afar again. This can be very confusing but this show is all about getting closer taking a big story and zooming it to just two people who as always can only only speak for themselves today. I'm moderating a call between a war and supporter and Bernie supporter who got into a heated altercation on Twitter Cape will it is a stand up. Comedian who has a political feminist comedy. podcast called reply guys these days. She's a vocal Bernie supporter and uses her platform to make political jokes many the in support of her candidate of choice and some against his opponents. Like this one back in November tweeted. I relate to Elizabeth Warren because when I say I have a plan for that I also mean that I will think about doing it in three years so this tweet really took off and as of this recording it has twenty two thousand likes and two point eight thousand retweets but someone who didn't like it. Both literally and emotionally is Steph. A woman who as you'll soon here was actually actually a longtime fan and follower of cates Steph. Responded a why is it the Bernie stance can't stop themselves from being pieces of shift it and then got messier. Kate retweeted steps tweet and because Kate has a large following a lot of people responded and then those people started going through steps timeline and responding to older twins of hers. You know the story but Captain Steph are here on this show today. It's easy to look at a conflict. Expecially one.
NBA-China standoff intensifies over controversial tweet
"So Daryl Morey he's the general manager of the Houston Rockets have put out a tweet the other day basically saying he stands with Hong Kong we stand with Hong Kong and when we all we being a collective as this country should go yep that's right I mean there there's nothing controversial about that right China is a corrupt authoritarian regime they're awful they're terrible and for four years and if you think communism's okay even if you're a Bernie bro for decades China has inflicted immense harm on the American economy either through currency manipulation or intellectual property rights violations whatever there's a litany of things China is a bad dude they're a bad actor there a bad player and the fact that the folks in Hong Kong continue to protest and continue to fight in could you have violence in many cases and acted on them for liberty and freedom to break free of the oppressive Chinese regime there is no question all of us should go get we still in Hong Kong now I'm not saying military intervention I'm not saying anything of that sort but in terms of who you well yeah we should want to people who stand for liberty and freedom who hole I could the U. S. who want to be friends with us we stand with those people nothing controversial about that at all online as you've got billions of dollars at stake when the N. B. A. dulls through its relationship with China the NBA has literally over over a course of time billions of dollars at stake because of the money that China represents to them through having games played over there do merchandising through television and China I code bill of you know words over there in China easy we get this thing over it's called freedom of speech and you can tell Intel the American government to **** off all you want in fact NBA really encourages that you know they awoke people over there in the NBA really educated top flight people they know what's going on you know like lebron James number he was wearing the bait hat in the takers lecture and they got dudes like a great pop of it use the coach of the San Antonio Spurs any at Steve Kerr gonna hear from him in just a second coach for the for the Golden State Warriors they're really woke when it comes to Tromp in the social issues in American their their whole only willing to speak out yeah you can't can't do that over there in China because they they do things like chop the hands off and stuff like that so so NBA's got a got a problem see the problem is NBA courage is the won't guys to speak our right you know lebron pop of the Steve Kerr when it comes to repent on trump for the Republicans or whatever else but now they get this do Daryl Morey who says basically what every American should think regardless of political party which is we stand with people who are at liberty and freedom the new gatt China that accounts for billions of dollars and China has already said we can't up your hands on but we can cancel your pre season games V. from being aired on Chinese state television which is what has happened so what do you do if you're the NBA well there was a time in this country where it was country first there was a time were being an American and standing for something meant something and that meant we would tell China okay fine you don't want our product is our backs and were big enough for the National Basketball Association there are more important things than money or or not anymore my friends because not only is the NBA refusing to say that and by the way this is only going into one of two ways because again China eighteen ****

And thank you. Karen for also disagreeing, I love we love it. When women fight. We fight. Respectfully one hundred. Back play with all due respect. Like fuck off. You're dead to me. Okay. Let's let's never be on. So terrorist my hill, we know that Karl Lagerfeld passed away one of the things that Karl Lagerfeld always attacked were clogs and berkinstocks even though I think he actually designed some, and so I've always thought that was weird, and I only wear clogs and berkinstocks, and then I came to LA, and I found it to be the most judgmental clog place, I have ever been. Yeah, they were like are those high heeled clogs? And I was like, I don't know they're chefs clogs from Sweden, they're comfortable. So anyway, my hill, which is not nearly as aggressive or interesting is that clogs are fucking awesome. And you can't stop me effort. Wow. Now, it's my turn to disagree. A clogs are a recipe for turned ankle and weird. Do you? What do you look at? These don't have rubber bottoms highly secure. I don't you know, what I don't know. He'll announce you lose with no shoes with no backs can fuck off. Scared. How to how to my feet stay in it. Yes, you're not really why they swelled to their normal size. And they stay in the shoe. That's how it works. Bent in center in flipped head of wearing shoes where when your foot swells? It looks like your foot to loaf of bread baking outside the pan. This just looks like your normal. Okay. All right. Well, hard disagree. But you know it lasts last week. Grace power. Brought in a pair of super high like wooden circuit nineties like candies, looking clogs and it was offensive. Those are not the clogs I'm talking about. Okay. What a comfort clog dance Garnaut talking about like a like a sexual clog think about the things, nurses and chefs where okay, I'm not sexy guys. It's okay. You have to be sexual clubs the grossest I'd like sexual clog, I wasn't on board with the clog. But if you make the I like, the idea of a sexual club that makes me I know I know what I'm getting to wear on your Bentley plane. Clock. We've got really detailed plans for this plane. Karen, what's your hill? I'm a convert to Costco. That's not a is that a hill. What about small plate? I hated. I hated Costco. And then my I went home. And my parents were like, Costco, Costco, Costco, Costco. It was like a being indoctrinated into a Colt, and Costco, Costco, you get this from Costco. Go to Costco, vice sports breath from Cosco. Do it at Costco, gas from Costco, Costco, Costco, my mom would be around the as Where'd you get that Costco cost. I mean, then my relatives came and they were all about Costco. And I was like these people are crazy and then got a membership. And I went and I don't wanna be anywhere else. It's the only place I wanna go eat the snacks when they're available. Of course. I eat the snack. I hear what I said about the league. I'll eat anything that's available, especially if it's free, and you know, this I've seen one hundred people I've seen it. Where did you eat dinner the place where it was free? Okay. That's I think that's a pretty good hill. So we've got small plates the small plates wore will continue. I the sharing war will continue next time. I'm here. I'm just bringing small plates. Also, if you go to that happy hour, we're going to be like all up in your would not allow it would eat before you literally four knowing that was coming. Listeners can't see this. "Manage your finances. If you're starting from zero still using that word, and I keep thinking of like the portfolio and I keep thinking of like head shots in a bind. Yeah. Full of women binders full of myself. But it takes a lot of effort to start from zero. And learn what all these things are speaking another language and the reward is your somewhat financially solvent. It's not a pleasurable thing. It's just you write the reward is stasis and for an it's like a thing for the future, right? Yeah. Right. And you don't get to see it for very long time, and the punishment is kind of a slow burn inability to get the things that you wanna get. So it's like really hard to grasp the risk reward of it. So I I think that it's something that people just need to decide to set aside a weekend where it's like, look, I am going to make me sell some t have a nice breakfast and sit down with his book for four hours like finance for dummies or whatever. And and like figure out what the very basics are. And then at the end of this weekend will know more than I did at the beginning. One thing that I wish I would have done when I graduated from college was just stay on top of my student loans and go out to bars and drink half as much because it because I spent so much I was in. Chicago right after college. And that's a really good place to be just out of college. It's really fun. But I spent so much time in bars that sucked with people. I no longer talk to drinking like shitty beer. And if I would have just taken one weekend night every weekend and done something like gone on a run by the lake or read or you could have just gotten if you like Jose Cuervo, you'll love Pepe Lopez with crystal light before you went out. That's what we did. Yeah. I mean, I think like I spent too much money on like going out, and I didn't pay enough attention to my student loans, and so like late in my twenty s.

"In my savings account. It was like my separate savings account. That's like God. Learn about that. Semi saving separate savings. That's that's really good ideas. Some people say that you're supposed to have six months, but. I mean who was a real achievement x months, what are we kings? That's crazy. Karen? How about you? I think one would be to remember that. Things don't matter and they don't define your value of joking about the Bentley airplane the whole time. But it your value is not defined by how much money you have. Or what you do worth worth as a human being and the amount in your Bank account, those are two separate things. And I think very often in a consumerist culture, we can flake those two things I think is incredibly important to remember. It doesn't matter. What the fuck car? You drive. Like, it doesn't matter. If you're Bradley Cooper, if you're homeless on the street, you have value and worth as a person, and that is very very separate from wherever you buy wine or coffee or water or close like it re-, those are very separate things. And then I I wish I'd learned more about like, I things I still don't know. Like like, the of like a Roth IRA of photo, you gotta get one like a 4._0._1._K like the always there's all these numbers with letters number the number letter money stop freelancer like yes. We are. So interesting now is that when you hear someone who says they have a 4._0._1._K, you think they're rich. I just think oh, oh, they know what they know. They know what's up what's up. They they've done it, you know, or or like how to invest like just any any sort of like money like beyond like trying to have good credit and like save and like not do stuff and live below your means. It's like I wish I had like gotten really literate at the the tools that. That would help you to make passive income. Yes. Because that is ultimately how you would build a nest egg for yourself. Anyway, getting good at that. I mean, I didn't really I've never really had enough to do something significant. But I remember you said it's like if you took those times, you were working you took five percent of that or poor whatever you could do one hundred bucks a month for exactly what I mean. Like what or fifty bucks a month or five it doesn't matter if but if you've been doing it consistently after ten years that's still money right now. And if that was making you money, that's like if thing we all need to live, and I I wished I I wished that was something I learned it's something I still need to learn, and I will learn it in the airplane. I think I mean your airplane is just going to be stocked with financial literacy, that's loaded. And I phone go wrong with US government bond. That's my like nineteen flawed as news real good. Thank you. So they can in every pot. Thank you voices voices in this episode. Yup. It's it's a voice one that one thing that your point Karen reminded me of his aunt Helen Peterson piece at BuzzFeed about millennial burnout, hyper viral where she kind of characterized a lot of financial stuff as like high effort, low reward activities..

"But in a way that people who had problems felt comfortable to come talk to me because everybody should know how to fix their credit and someone came to me their house was being foreclosed on and they were so ashamed and it could have been fixed if they had just asked for help six months earlier. Yeah. That's a really interesting point, the idea of pretending that you don't have money is something that you see a lot in politics where it's like you see politicians being like, yeah. I'm just a regular yield law. Grad who weren't in corporate law for fifteen years. And now, I'm at a sleigh. A parent Apparently. or now, I'm now I'm holding a corn Dodd this poor guy, and you like old knit like I think it's an issue. Yeah. I'm holding. But my pinkies up this is how poor people eat, right. Oh my heavens. This this is electile, but I think that like pretending to be pretending to have had to work harder than you had to work something that you see in politics and in creative fields. And I also find that a little bit annoying to as somebody who grew up without really any extra money. It's sort of like, no don't don't steal. No deal. My experience one thing. I have is the fact that I had to overcome being lower middle class that has my stir one struggle. Let me have this. But classes a big like I was born in Britain. And my mom always talks about class. You know, because it's massive in England. It's like it because it's wealth, it's oriented around wealth, but it's also rendered name and around your accent. Like, there's all these markers of like that say who you are. And how your valuable and why you should know the Queen or whatever fuck so it's like, I'm at the Queen. Of course, you sorry. You got your Bentley? I met the Queen keep going. I love the side. No 'em at the queen's very impressive lets us. All I'm going to tell you about my shitty. Credit later fast. Let me have the Queen Queen. But like classes a thing in America too. Because it's like I went to Harvard and I grew up in Boca Raton. I went to Boca Raton, my parents were I generally voca. Britain's Dan. dan. I watched that memoir. That's a light read that. I'd watch that Amazon. Thank you. Oh, God guys. Yeah. You're welcome. This might be the path. We might have found the path. But my grandfather worked in a factory they were they were first gender. Like he was a first generation immigrant from India to England. He was a middle school teacher became a factory worker like kind of really like that kind of hustle worked for Jaguar and like was just an issue salesman. And then like saved all this money. Parents are the first ones to go to college because the government bankrolled that in England at the time. So got a job as an engineer teacher moved to Florida and picked a school district. They picked a place where the public schools were good. So it I actually went to high school where a friend of mine had a movie theater in his house. Like, it was like it. I was that's what I mean. When I say comparatively poor I wearing up, right? They had a house and whatever else, but it was like like they're like I remember going through the second gate to get to his home. And somebody was like do you work here? And I was like I am going to Harvard. First time I've ever said that in my life. I was like how dare you dare you. But that yeah, it's it's it's a it's a comparative thing, and then it was like, but it's also the placement of somebody saying, hey, because this school district is wealthy. Let's make sure we fall in in these lines or Soanes. So that we can get this education at this good public school and the way that that impacts opportunity then because now think about the you went to a good school. It's like the categorical advantage that gift of education or mobility in our nation's massive, I also want to talk a little bit about generational wealth. Because that's an important thing too. When we look at people who have mobility now, like millennials are are out earning..

"You are able to do it because they have somebody subsidizing them will. And this is what I mean. I think it goes to why we're having this conversation where we're talking about. It's not your fault. If you were born a baller it. Sure faults if you pretend to be poor and act like we are in the same trench. Okay. That's like, what makes me crazy. I feel like, you know, there is editor shame around not having money. And then there's also the shame around having pebbles, you wanna talk about, you know, they don't want to admit maybe that they are getting help. And I don't necessarily think you should brag about it shout it from the rooftops. But I. Think it guy will it can be when you play graciously. You don't have to shout X. We'll just see it at the time tarmac. It's going to be it's gonna be loud because I was going to hear it overhead. But I'm like, you should you can talk about that. I also think because I also think in talking about it you then take the you take the shame in pressure off with the friend who doesn't have. Yeah. And the person who's wondering what they're doing wrong. Yes. Their life doesn't look like that life. Well, and you know for me, so creative fields. Yes. Government not exactly a boon. And you are. But people think because it's a powerful job that you have money, and they don't know, you know, I mean, I lived in really a not great situations up until I finally got a proper promotion in the White House. And once I did the thing that I tried to do because I was so ashamed all those years. I had no money. I had terrible credit which we can talk about later. And once I got myself out of that hole. I really felt it was my. Duty to pay it forward. So I did kind of own that I was in a better financial position..

"Duggal with how to maintain it. But I think they learn they they're going to have a Bank account earlier. Good point certainly gonna have like a savings account. Maybe even a trust fund. Just knowing that exists opens you up to them the basic question. Interesting. Yeah. Ear engaged in wanting to know how you get more building credit over time in credit from when you're twelve or fifteen or whatever it is. When you get you know, you get a credit card, then that's a very different narrative. The or I know people who use their college loans to buy property during you know, that that seems wrong raised a mistake. I don't know. And that's the problem wasn't me. I don't own anything except for future Bentley airplane. But like if that's not legal. I didn't say who. So sorry the government. But yeah, I mean people who who like. Like most people are very wealthy in this country. It's not about the income that you make. It's about all of it. A lot of your money is passive income that is accruing more money for you. And that's a very different way to think about work and money. It's just like this idea of passive income from money that is nested away somewhere versus like, I'm going to make this wage and spend pieces of this wage, which is I feel very much how we are taught to think about work and work equaling value. And I think a lot of times money education. If you're not somebody who has taught when you were a kid a lot of times, your first real lesson is when you get a red envelope in the mail. That's like you are we're gonna come to your house has. Right. And so you don't understand what credit is you. Don't understand what money is until you've destroyed your credit and set yourself back finance for a really long time. Like, I went to college at I went to a private school. I went to Notre Dame. And I before I had gone there. I hadn't been around rich people at all fame. It didn't occur to me that they were that many of them. I. Thought they would like to fly. Yeah. Right. It was just like, well, you know, the chiropractor in my town is a big house in an in ground pool. And that's the rich. Go are rich guy was the equine veterinarian. Oh, really rich veterinarian to specialty. Yep. But you know, I I went to college. And it was the first time that I was around people who could just like by an airplane ticket. You know, like more who got pathfinder's for their birthday. Yeah. That happened. Yeah. Yeah. And then going to college I the first time I remember the first time I met somebody whose parents were paying their fifty thousand dollars a year tuition. Just out of pocket, right? Just out of pocket, and I remember graduating from college, and then those people were able to use everything that they earned to save for themselves having apartment without four roommate. Right. And they didn't have their credit wasn't completely dependent on their ability to pay student loans off, and then they were able to buy property in their twenties. And then, you know, now, they're in their thirties and they've traded up, and I'm still paying my student loans. I mean, I went to school. I started rich school and middle school. So I definitely knew eleven year olds of credit cards in New York in New York. I went to school in the upper east side. And I learned very quickly. You know, I'm from Harlem, but I'm from original Harlem, not the red rooster. You think of now? So there was definitely that was an important clarification. It is people here Harlem, go. Ooh. And it's like Naga wrote..

"And I think that's the first time that's ever happened. Which is really interesting. Well, he's no one voted for Trump. I mean, they better not have their protest votes. They get to go live with Paul Ryan, Paul James Ville, they they don't get to live up in Frederick anymore. But, but here's something that I thought about like, I think that there was bad faith. I mean, if we're talking about assessing candidates, and and the the negative feelings rumbled candidates based on who align themselves with those candidates. I think that there were bad faith assumptions made I hate saying this, but on both sides like the Bernie, bro thing isn't a total myth like are definitely kind of men informed by their sexism. Who believes that who believe that they're liberalism and knock Yates them from misogyny, which is not true, which and I think that Bernie did try to disavow that, you know. Platform. Right. He I mean, but but at the same time, you don't get to choose your fans or your writers like David foster. Wallace was a brilliant writer. His fan boys are the very worst bright right there, so bad that they almost make me not like they make me like his writing less, but you know, and Bernie had great policies, and he had people that were supporting him who were not people. He would probably choose to represent him pub Riley. Right. And I think the same thing goes for Hillary because I think that that I think that when it comes to the first major party presidential nominee. I think that there was a lot of historical like anger and hurt. Like when you're a woman. I think that you go your whole life getting the like death by thousand paper cuts little sexism's all the time. And when you're finally in a position where you think you're you're getting what you you think you've worked for? Yes. And then it seems like maybe your. Getting sex that you're facing sexism, again, even still I think that that's it's easy to really react negatively to that. Yes. And just to see I it's being being treated differently. Because of who you are makes you feel a little crazy. And I and I'm not saying that Hillary people are crazy. But it makes you feel that some people are doing that to you all the well, it's like, here's here's I think I can sum up the feeling if you are those people those women enough like a Nuff like what else does she have to do to be able to win the fucking election, right? And like enough and to be fair, you know, when Hillary after the two thousand sixteen election, people were like Hillary, please go away, please right way. Please go away and now, and if she were to declare candidacy people would be just apoplectic it they would have had the same reaction roughly that people had to burning. Yes. Yes. But I feel like because Hillary was at the top of a losing ticket. I feel like it would be even more. So like Bernie didn't get a chance to run against Donald Trump. But there's still a negative. Reaction to it. Because it's just like people are like look, there's sexism in the way that people have treated Hillary, and Bernie, no matter how you shake it. Correct. Bernie didn't choose to have that happen. Right. Neither did Hillary. But that's reality. And so people are reacting to I think like the perceived attitudes instead of the actual candidates themselves and their policies, and the fact that Bernie has for decades been standing up for women for minorities for workers. Right. All of that goes away when his most ardent and vocal supporters when anybody's most ardent in vocal supporters are fucking asshole, Stu you asshole. Or they or they you feel like they're being Astles to you. So it is difficult to unpack. I mean, what are your personal feelings about Bernie running wrong with you? I'm sorry. Here's my talk. Here's what I'm going to say. I'm gonna say that I think that the electorate has told us some things in the past hundred years one going forward a second time, usually not that successful one to most people who become the democratic nominee are and win the presidency or a little younger. And I think that what the midterms tell us is that people are looking for a new fresh voice now, that's complicated..
