And now back to the show norman in psycho leather face and the texas chainsaw massacre bill and the silence of the lambs. Each of these characters had its origins in saying true story the unspeakable crimes of a single man. No real life of has inspired more scary movies than the nineteen fifty seven discovery of an almost unbelievable real house of horrors located in the unassuming mid western town of plainfield wisconsin. It was a typical morning in november when a local hardware store owner named bernice warden disappeared in the middle of her shift. Her son just so happened to be the deputy sheriff of plainfield and when she didn't show back up by the end of the day he entered the store to find the cash register ransacked and blood on the floor. Following a handful of clues. Investigators would arrest. Local quiet eccentric. Ed geene after. They searched his infamous farmhouse. Just a warning here. Descriptions that i'm about to give you are some of if not the most gruesome stuff in american hysteria history but it's also vital to understanding why it affected the genre so much so skip ahead. If you need to give anyone a little time giving you a little time giving you a little time okay. Here we go. The first horrific discovery on ed giddins property was in the decaying shed where bernice warden's body was found decapitated and hung up by her ankles. Cut open like a deer. Entering the main house. Authorities found bowls made human skulls tanned. Human skin stretched across wastebaskets and chairs and a lampshade made with a human face of belt made of nipples nine villas in a shoebox. A pair of lips. Hanging on the drawstring of a window shade most impactfully gain had made a core set from a woman's or so skin leggings from a woman's legs skin and a collection of women's faces. That could be worn as masks. Okay it's over you can come back. I'm sorry everyone who listened. The subsequent investigation would reveal that gene had murdered bernice warden and another woman named mary hogan a local tavern owner. Who'd been missing for three years. It was discovered however that all the other human remains came from visits to the town's cemetery where he would exume newly buried corpses of middle aged women place near his deceased mother's grave to understand. Ed geene like a bearded psycho analyst. Must of course understand his relationship to his mother. Ed geene grew up with an abusive father and an extremely overbearing hauntingly christian mother who ran a local grocery store when the family moved onto a remote farm ten miles out of town. Augusta geen made certain to derail any friendships. Ed was able to make. Despite his ought appearance and bizarre mannerisms which allegedly included laughing out loud at nothing gain and his brother were essentially confined to the farmhouse. Sta read the scariest old testament passages at them again and again railing against the evils of sex even within marriage teaching them that all women were temptresses horrors and she imagined them stocking the property line ready to defile her pure obedient sons after the death of his father and his eventually disobedient brother who a lot of people think he actually killed. It was just ed now in his thirties and his ailing mother left alone on this secluded farm. And in fact that's exactly the way they wanted it when augusta finally died in december of nineteen forty. Five as you might imagine the thirty nine year old ed giddins entire realty shattered having no idea what to do without the center of his world to revolve around he boarded up augusta's bedroom and her sitting rooms creating a perfectly preserved personal museum an eerie contrast to the rest of the house that was decrepit dirty and covered in human remains when he buried a gusta in the local cemetery. Her tombstone simply.

"This episode includes dramatization and discussions of murder and assault that some people may find offensive. We advise extreme caution for children under thirteen. Here's a joke. Why did they have to keep the heat up at gains house the punchline so the furniture won't get goosebumps. This was one of the many children's joke circulating merely days after Ed gains one, thousand, nine, hundred, eighty, seven arrest for the murder of Bernice warden in plainfield. Wisconsin. These quips became such a hot trend in the state that people gave them a name gainers. Gains crimes stirred their own media fascination an uproar in his hometown of Plainfield, and beyond as we talked about last week, the fifty one year old handyman murdered two local women robbed at least eight craves from nineteen, forty, seven until nineteen, fifty two and decorated his home with various body parts of many corpses. This week will explore gains trial, his institutionalization and the public fascination surrounding his arrest. His crimes made him the inspiration for several movie villains, Buffalo Bill and Hannibal Lecter in the silence of the lambs Norman. Bates in psycho and leather face in the Texas chainsaw massacre. Upon gains arrest in nineteen fifty, seven psychologists diagnosed him with sexual psychopathy and schizophrenia many people have labeled him as a necrophile and Cannibal, over the years but gain has denied ever eating or having intercourse with a corpse. Ginkel heads N. Vaginas of dead women. He used their skin as well as other body parts to create a woman suit that he could wear. Gain also used bones, skin and skulls as waste thin super bowls and lampshades. Tavern owner Mary Hogan disappeared on December Eighth Nineteen fifty four and gain often joked about it with the townspeople of Plainfield. He'd tell them quote she's not missing. She's down at the farm right now after his arrest in nineteen, fifty, seven gains crimes were no laughing matter. But the gainer jokes helped the people of Plainfield cope with the fact that such a disturbed killer had lived among them for. So long the present towns people immediately assumed that game was guilty of his heinous crimes if those jokes nicknames or any indication as for the criminal justice system though it would take more than a decade in court for the State of Wisconsin to formally charged with first degree murder. Hi, I'm Greg. Poulsen, and this is serial killers. podcast diving into the minds and motives of some of the most notorious serial killers. Today, we're going to continue with deep dive into the life of Ed Geene, the butcher of Plainfield, a murderer, grave robber, and the inspiration behind many notorious movie villains. I'm here with my co host Vanessa Richardson. Licensed psychologist psychiatrist but she's not a lot of research for the show. Hi, everyone we like to ask a quick favor. Would you leave a five Star Review of serial killers on your favorite podcast directory? It seems so simple but it really helps us out and don't forget to subscribe while you're there because a new episode comes out every Monday. You can also find us on facebook and Instagram at podcast and on twitter at podcast network. November sixteenth nineteen fifty seven Ed Geene shot his second victim Bernie's warden with a twenty two caliber rifle. She was the beloved owner of a hardware store in plainfield and she resembled gains mother Augusta like his mother warden owned a successful store and she had her own son Frank. Later that night on November sixteenth nineteen, Fifty, seven, Geene was arrested for the murder of warden he just remained silent. New. Why and it frustrated both the police and the public gain silence especially frustrated plainfield Sheriff Arch Schley on the night of November Sixteenth Nineteen fifty seven, the sheriff investigated gains farm for six hours and was horrified by what he found. Shrunken heads skull super bowls and skin decorated furniture. When Schley got off work around two thirty am he didn't go directly home. To his family he decided to stop by Gains County jail cell. Schley decided to take things into his own hands Schley stormed into jail cell grab gained by the shoulders and began slamming him against the wall Schley hoped that he could violently coerced confession out of gain but it didn't work at Geene seemed shaken up but his silence continued until about twenty hours later. Geen confessed to wardens murder at eleven am on November Eighteenth Nineteen fifty seven, it's unknown. What prompted him to finally speak but gain seemed ready and willing to talk about wardens murder as well as the rest of the crimes. I T talked about wardens murder and claimed that he shot her by accident. Gained District Attorney Earl. Kaleen that he went to her shop on November sixteenth to buy a half gallon of antifreeze gain claimed he didn't remember shooting warden because he was in a daze. He said that he had been testing the fit of AMMO and a rifle in store. He claimed vaguely remember that he loaded the rifle gained theorized that the gun may have accidentally fired at warden in a medical. Evaluation of gain hospital social worker. Kenneth. Colwell wrote that gain thought worden was a woman with a bad reputation and questionable morals according to gain worden had met her husband as he was dating another woman. Mr. Warden fell in love with Bernice and subsequently left the other woman who later committed suicide years later Mr warden died of blood disgrace. Yeah. which gained believed to be punishment for Bernice wardens earlier behavior. Gain may not have recalled shooting warden but he remembered what he had done with her body. He told DA kaleen quote. My memory is a little vague but I do remember dragging her across the floor. I remember loading her body in the truck. Then I drove the truck out on the East road at the intersection where fifty one and seventy three separate east of Plainfield I drove the truck up. In the pine trees, then I walked down and got in my car and I drove it out there loaded her body in the back of the car and also the cash register I loaded the cash register and the truck when I put her body in there, then I drove out to my farm and took the body out of the car and hung up by the heels in my woodshed and quote. It's clear. The geen recalled many of the details from the ninety shot warden but he claimed that he was unable to remember himself pulling the trigger during the interrogation he claimed that the police that he had not killed anyone else. geen would later admit to the second murder of Mary Hogan after police found her face in a paper sack in his home. It was skinned from her skull and preserved with oil. Vanessa was gins simply deflecting from the cops or is there a psychological reason his memory couldn't blacked out during those killings Geen could have been deflecting. He had told police that his days was similar to the days used to fall under when he exhumed women's corpses from graves even in modern times, you'll often read in media reports that the suspect in questions said they were in a daze as they committed the crime. Modern psychologists have found this to be extremely common in several studies about the memories of murderers. A significant number of the killers had no memory of committing their own crimes. There are several possible causes for this. It could be associated Amnesia when a person forgets a traumatic or criminal experience. After it happens, the suspect could also have been an associate state, which means they would have been in an altered state.

"A serial killer and gain of Plainfield. Wisconsin was the inspiration for villains for several gruesome horror films including leather face in the Texas chainsaw massacre Buffalo Bill in silence of the lambs and Norman Bates in psycho gains mother Augusta Esa, conic 'em, manipulative domineering religious fanatic became a single mother after the nineteen forty heart attack and death of our alcoholic and abusive husband George after gains brother Henry died in nineteen, forty four some say at and gained own hands. He had his mother all to. Himself, her world revolved around him just as she was the center of his existence after she died in late nineteen, forty-five, gain thirty nine lived alone for the first time in his life later diagnosed after suffering from schizophrenia. He missed his mother despite our emotional abuse of him. Perhaps hoping that he might become his mother Ed begin dressing as a woman gain rob graves, dating up the bodies of women who reminded him of his mother. But later he resorted to murder after dismembering the women. And skinning them game did something that shocked the entire world what I'm about to tell you will have you saying how in God's name can anyone bring themselves to mutilate a human body in such fashion? By the end of this, you will know without a doubt Ed gained was a natural born beast making ghastly items of feminine attire straight from the skin of his victims. Here are some of the things that were found in Ed gains home even as a boy game exhibited feminine behavior. which made him a target to his classmates for bullying after the death of his mother. It seemed that he was increasingly desperate to become a woman himself possibly as a means resurrecting his mother although he claimed that he didn't participate in necrophilia because the women's corpses smelled too bad. He did on his victims skins after transforming them into articles of clothing. One such item was of course set which was designed to trim his waist and impart to him they more feminine figure but Ed's Wardrobe. Included several ghastly items of feminine attire including a built made a nipples and Ed Geene was Betty Crocker's nightmare. After he dismembered his victims, he would often use their skulls as bowls or ash trays. He also embedded forks and spoons in them to make his own cutlery and. Didn't waste a thing. He kept the organs of his victims in the refrigerator and appear to have consumed them after cooking on a stove top some believe that he even shared his macabre dinners with acquaintances and it also seems that aired was into making custom furniture authorities is discovered to chairs that he upholstered with the skins of his victims mounds. Bizarre artifacts were strewn stacked in jumbled on the floor of gained south, this included a wastebasket made of human skin skulls atop Bedpost, a collection of noses of boxful, a women's. Genitalia and the head of victim Mary. Hogan, in a bank gain also had a wall hanging made of body parts. There were other items, justice hideous several of them like the course of human flesh were intended to aid him in his fetish for dressing as a member of the opposite sex determined to appear as much like a woman as possible gain skinned. One of the dead women's legs using the flesh as leggings to occupy himself. Geen became an avid reader. His collection of reading materials however was decidedly bazaar his library included. Articles about cannibalism, headhunting, truck heads, and Nazi lampshades made of human skin gain also studied grey's anatomy. It seems that he is reading provided him with some grisly home decorating ideas s gain confessed to having murdered only two women, bar owner, Mary Hogan, and hardware store owner Bernice warden. The some believe that he may have killed as many as seven women. The exact number is difficult to determine because geen supplemented the bodies of his murder victims with the corpses he stole from nearby cemeteries the latter of whom included fifty one year. Old Eleanor atoms he also was suspected in the disappearance of two children, eight-year-old Georgia Wexler and fifteen year old Evelyn. Hartley after Bernice warden went missing from her hardware store in plainfield her son frank the town's deputy sheriff suspected that Ed was responsible and frank was right. They found Bernice at gain towels and the scene was straight out of a horror movie her decapitated corpse which had been gutted like a deer hung upside down in an outbuilding, a box held her head and her intestines and nails and been pounded through her. A census taker once tried to test me. I ate his liver with some fatherly. Nice key and they're all legendary movie villains who are best known for their haunting. Murderous acts on screen believe it or not all took inspiration from one man who committed similar heinous crimes in real life. His name was Edward Keen. Who's known as the butcher of Plainfield for his perverse actions on women's bodies both dead and alive he killed all two women in Plainfield Wisconsin and robbed the graves of at least eight women in the town on the surface? The area knew him as Ed Geene. The local handyman no one knew about gains secret proclivities until nineteen fifty seven when he became the prime suspect in the disappearance of hardware store owner Bernice warden her son. Frank found a puddle blood on the floor of her shop. He immediately suspect again. My mother said he'd been hanging around and behaving oddly. Recently Frank told the police. He insisted to police that they should question. Geen and investigators farm located a few miles outside of plainfield Wisconsin. And Ed knew what the officer was going to ask before the words even emerged from his mouth. Somebody framed as he would later. Confess infests Geen did kill Bernice warden and he kept her body at his family's farm. The following is a graphic description of gains home listener. Discretion is advised advised when the police entered gains home. They found Bernice decapitated and gutted her body hung from the rafters of his kitchen. Upon further investigation. The police found other evidence of human remains in his home including human skulls fashioned into super bowls. Human Flesh Schiphol streak covering furniture and a suit made entirely of women skin as in a suit that gain would wear. This was not a movie Ed Geene had murdered. Two women violated the graves of at least eight women in practice human taxidermy. He was terrifying real life villain to the living living and dead for a decade before he was arrested.
