Why Do We Drop a Ball on New Year's Eve?
"Brain stuff lauren bugaboo. We're here every December thirty first throngs of revelers eager to ring in a new year crowd into New York. City's Times Square in the final minutes of the year. As the clock ticks. Away seconds towards midnight and opulent oversized ball descends from above and when it reaches its destination. The crowd cheers. The current times. Square ball is the seventh version to perform the duty of ringing in the New Year. The tradition began in nineteen o seven when a ball made of iron and wood covered in one hundred light. Bulbs descended a flagpole all the latest version of the ball boasts two thousand six hundred eighty eight crystal triangles and thirty two thousand and two hundred and fifty six led modules. The New Year's ball drop. Has Its roots in naval history inspired by the time balls introduced in the early eighteen. Hundreds these devices were fixed towers and coastal towns and would drop a ball all at a precise moment of the day to alert nearby ships captains. When to precisely set their navigational tools called chronometers? The current New Year's tradition is a particularly American American affair and the Times Square ball drop has inspired numerous imitators around the country and even around the world so today which is New Year's Eve if you're listening on the day the episode comes out I wanted to share some of the weirdest most wonderful things that people drop to ring in the New Year for more than two decades a city in central Pennsylvania Selena has celebrated the tournament calendar by dropping a massive Baloney spiced to meet is popular in the region and Lebanon. Pennsylvania is home to several producers service plus. There's an annual Baloney festival every January for the first twenty years of the New Year's event a single two hundred pound Bologna. That's about ninety. Kilos would be lowered powered by an industrial crane right before had been night in two thousand sixteen though the tradition shifted from one massive Baloney to twenty individual blocks of Baloney weighing in at ten pounds owns or four and a half kilos. Each the reason. For the change the organizers the annual event donate them to charity after the drop and it took too long in the hours after midnight to slice this up one gigantic Baloney. Apparently for twenty twenty a disco ball will be attached to the Bologna. Let's go next to Saint George's Bermuda where revelers avelar. Don't just get to celebrate a few hours. Before most of the rest of the Western Hemisphere they get to watch a gigantic onion. Drop at the stroke of midnight as musicians artists performers in street food vendors. Live up kings. Square Saint George's founded in sixteen. Twelve was Bermudez first. English settlement and the island became major producer and exporter of onions. Glittering golden onion covered in light bulbs descends about the square which overlooks Hamilton Harbour and laser show and fireworks traditionally follow the event rent but back Pennsylvania in addition to the Baloney the drops in Lebanon less than two hours away. The city of Bethlehem celebrates or that enormous peop- drop that wraps up a two day celebration known as peeps best. This sugary and divisive marshmallow confection is generally produced in the shape of a bird and is most commonly found in the US around the Easter holiday. Just boring the Bethlehem based Candy Company responsible for peeps also makes my connects and hot tamales. The giant EH dropped on New Year's Eve weighs four hundred pounds. That's about one hundred and eighty kilos and finally let's head to Sunny Arizona and the city of show low. This locale gets its unique name stays as a frontier town without a name and the story goes the two rival cowboys and ranch. CODERS were playing an extended game of poker and the loser would vacate the city leaving the other with hundreds of acres of land the deciding hand in who would stay and who would go. According to city lore would belong to whichever cowboy oh boy could show low by holding the lowest value card possible and the winner turned over a two of clubs these days. Not only these cities Main Street tamed. Deuce of clubs but show low drops a colossal illuminated playing card every December thirty first. It's just a block away from where a statue commemorating. The card game once stood once stood because the original fiberglass statue accidentally burned down during a candlelit vigil in two thousand sixteen. It's being replaced by Lebron's one. Here's to a safe and flame free New Year's Eve.

"So if you would be kind of upset with you know having the winning fighter but not the method. I think that, that can really be disheartening. I think you could always kind of split your bet as well. Have one pay for the other. But a lot of times, you have to look at that line in see, is that path to victory built into the line and built into that problem. We have heavy knockout artist is there is, you know, that is usually only what ten twenty cents difference when they don't have another path to victory or by decision or, or that type of stuff as well. So, but you look at a guy like Manny Bermudez, who all he does is submit people, it's probably going to be built into his line because if he wins. That's the only way that he has kind of shown a propensity to do. So guys like Sergio Pettus, winning decisions Frankie Edgar all that type of stuff. But it can be very disheartening very quickly to take the right side but not the right method and lose your entire that completely. Yeah. I mean that's the thing. I think that a lot of people just starting out, and I can certainly understand this. And I mean, I was this way back in my infancy of sports betting to is that ought to people just get allergic to chalk. You know, they don't like the idea of. Of laying a dollar seventy five to win a dollar. You know that minus seventy five line is something that they're just not comfortable with something that they don't like. But I think that this and in particular something like UFC where there are multiple paths to victory. It's not a bad thing to simplify the process and just be comfortable with laying net number. Yeah. And again, I, I am a huge proponent of flat bedding. I am a huge proponent of open parlays. I am a huge proponent of two fighter or two team max parlays. I think they get a very bad rap because the only ones that you see out there are these five six seven eight teamers that inevitably lose in their sports books, best friend. And, and I understand that. But when it's done right. And if you can be patient. And if you hint value to me is valued, and it's a very interesting word because there's no value in a losing ticket. A lot of the times if you don't know what to do with it or you don't apply it every single time. I always talk about that I will routinely in the right upset. I do or while talking with you tell you, I expect this, this was a great example the. What other fight that I lost last? Week was Bech go. Hey, at believe plus thirty five in the short term I completely expected her to lose that fight. However, the line was so off from the way that I made it that I had to take that value. It's the same reason that I'm going to be successful long-term fading. You know, Greg hardy in his first fight philosophically or anyone coming in, in their first fight. Yeah. I got lucky..

"Service. I do at all. After you if he's happy ecstatic. He's stoked. Cool. I mean, fuck do like, I say you the Mark on the sport. You got the gym you've coached champions you fought? So I'm not shocked, and then your modern day boy. So what the hell? Ticky go. All right, Dan. Tom are fight analysts. What do you have for Tiki go? So we gotta let them go soon. I just have one question about, you know, you mentioned one Archer Leta, and I want to bring him up and as well as guys like Liam Liam mcgarry Tiki. I mean, you talk about TJ being being a pro. And and obviously, you know, he's more high profile, so we're aware of his status, but you know, one Archer let he talks like a guy who, you know, people in the know says it's going to be champion. He sounds much more mature beyond his age. And I was even out in talking to Liam McGee. And he just sounds like his whole mentality has been revamped since working down, there beach is this. I mean, obviously, you know, you can't take all the credit, nor you wired that way, but how much of this is you're doing Tiki, and how much of this is this like just the type of guys that you wanna select. Two two answers to that. One is the team I have here. The the helps me Paul era is a big part of this. He's he's he's also fought the great wrestling coach is a great mental coach. And he helps me with a lot of the guys and the other part is. Yeah, I've been there and done that. So I understand what these fighters and these athletes and need to do to succeed. And I can do it without the bullshit. It's not I'm not, you know, I'm not a guy that went and got his law degree and trying to become a sports agent. You know, it's not going to guys don't, you know, with no experience never set foot in the cage. Never got never been in a fight, you know, and trying to direct them and explain to them. So I think I could relate to them in a way that makes sense. And they trust me. And they then, you know, they're like, okay. The sound device. I should take it. All right, cool. Well, listen, I think the one thing we all wanna see a rematch. And. But I'm gonna shoot straight. I think it'll probably happen at thirty five. I just think that's probably something with pseudo getting the win that he's probably gonna push for, you know, same way TJ was going for history. I think that's the way. So who does wire, that's the way these champions are wired. They wanna leave their legacy. But I guess we'll all be keeping an eye on Ryan sons. I also feel like one way to add the legacies to defend your strap against your division cleaned, the division out. So I don't know if you think that way as well. But, but you know, regardless thanks for jumping on the show with us. And congrats on guys, you know. All these assets in high profile fights. Hey, we've been really nice to him. I kinda wanna be mean for second. Go ahead. Show for almost twelve years. And we've never had you here in arced. We've had two in our house where we started. But I would think at some point we need to get you in here in the studio at Mandalay bay at at the least for you for you. At least say this is a lot cooler than your kitchen. What are you gonna make that happen? I know you come to focus maybe in what the date of the John fight. March second making stuff happen. I like it. Maybe we can do that. We. All right, cool. We'll follow up and goes, we gotta let him go because he has a big bone could pick with us and he hasn't. So he's actually he's actually. So we've gotta let go. I'll let you off the hook. "Granted that's more cultural Brazilians. But the fact is they're not always glorious because they are not given to you. So if any fighter goes, this is my nickname and your immediately marked down in the scorebook, right? And now, if you're nicknamed something very like, my nickname is awesome guy the killer in the now, you even look kind of a little more. Do she? Right. Because not only did you break the room. Give yourself a nickname. You gave yourself like a. Destructive nickname. But then his prince of war now, again, I'm really trying my hardest put all that stuff aside and just judge them as a fighter, but with that baggage you're coming on the, you know, not only my going to glorify violence from going from allegations to mixed martial arts cage. But in case that's not glorify and case that's not violent enough. My nickname's the prince of war and better on. Prince of war regular people. I don't know man, I'm spotting a little pattern here, especially with the way destroys people. I just think something along the lines of destruction, you know, some he's a heavyweight you can probably count on a look he he hurt Crowder. A couple of times. I thought I mean, he was close to putting them out not super close. But he was starting to put a couple of shots on them that hurt crowd or got high Crowder's attention. Then Crowder, did what the announcer said anticipated that he could do. And that's, you know, getting clothes put them up against the cage. Start to throw them out. Don't get hit by bombs and. Then if I got to the ground hardy was able to show that he can get up. I mean, there was some interesting sequences even kind of all walked with his feet. So the fight showed us a little bit. He's going to give a lot of experience from it. But it's unfortunate the knees kind of going to be the highlight of all this. You know? Yeah. That said, I think he belongs in the of see, and you know. Let's see what happens in the next bite. He's at the right spot with the right people ATT we can bounce back from something like this. I agree. Yeah. Look at steep at meal. Just like his record. He hit a few speed bumps along the way. Right. Danton cormie. He's maybe the exception. But a lot of these guys go back and look at Randy couture. Chuck Ladele to see how many times they had to figure things out before they got it. I I think he belongs there. But he definitely needs to shorts and stuff. I think maybe this could be good daily debate. Guys, your your guys are hatchet onto. But I don't know. If he belongs there. I feel like it makes it makes it much harder. I think may I mean definitely didn't belong Komeito vent slot. And again, I'm not trying to combat. I feel like I've been like I've been very fair about Greg hardy breaking them down analyzing him for what little there is to break down. But yeah, I feel like honestly guys I feel like he belongs in the caveat. Put him on the sidelines. He still has developing to do stick to your developmental deal. Your regional plan. Contender series. A.

"Should they be truck and seeing how along the fighters lots of continue? I appreciate some fights the most significant Novus, but surely I'll fight it should have a fight. And so that to continue. Thank you. Right. You have a problem with stoppage. Now having some time to reflect on it. You know, I I went back last night in saw it again. And I do think it was a bit early. But I didn't think it was criminally early. Like, I didn't think TJ got robbed like it was clear that TJ was hurt. He was wobbling. And I think since the initial touch I think it was like twelve seconds. It goes that that's a who does attacking him. And I think, you know, twelve seconds might not sound like a lot. But if you're just counting one to me. Yeah. And the whole time I not your was saying, hey, I was going for that single. But he was going for the single for twelve seconds. And he couldn't get it at menu. You think you're gonna take down so Huta to maybe I'm not saying he what it is a tough ask is, especially when you've been rocked. Yes. So I think if they would have let the fight I wouldn't I wouldn't hate if they would have let the fight go on longer. I think in in these championship fights. And when when there's so much steak, I think it's okay for fighters to to take a little bit of a beating, you know, you don't wanna take now like the Dan Hooker scenario where you got somebody. That's so ya. Right. There's really nothing at stake. You already losing a lot a lot of the fight. Just call it. No. In this case, you know, let the fight go on a little bit. But I didn't think it was the worst stoppage in the world. So I went back, and I watched the Sironi and Hernandez stoppage. Hernandez was wrestling when they stopped at two now. How thoroughly he was wrestling not very he was hurt, obviously. But this idea that like, oh, he was still wrestling. Therefore, that's intelligent defense. We'll sort of like, yes, if he was just laying there. Well, that would be terrible. But that you're moving is not necessarily enough as to be really kind of coordinated and affective that you're reaching is not all that much. Look could he have probably let it go a little longer. I think that much is incontestable. Yeah. He could have let it go a little bit longer. And I don't think it would have been the end of the world. But this idea that it's some kind of egregious stoppage. You know, this is some kind of, you know, I don't know. I don't want the war stoppages the top of my head. But you know, we're it's the uniformly bad. No. I know. So I got out there and said this was a terrible stop it. He also said he thought Greg hardy looked amazing like, oh, he can definitely files. Like that was not the lesson. I took from this. I mean, I don't know about that. Maybe in the future. He will. I'm not writing them off. Right. But I didn't look at that performance particularly inspiring. So there's a lot of times you get these media narratives that begin to carry their own weight. Sorry, is it was it was an a plus stoppage. No, probably C plus B minus somewhere in there. But that's a passing grade. Yeah, for sure I would say like in the scale of okay am bad. It's a few degrees on the okay side. But you know, I don't think it was the worst thing in the world. It's not it's just totally made up phenomenon that I don't buy it. All sorry. New. I now this next caller asked two questions in one. So obviously a pertaining TJ hudo and couple of other guys. All right. All right. Guys. It's Ricardo from Toronto. I just wanted to get you as a -pinion on aftermath of teaser dose on video. I personally think he's gonna get that rematch at one hundred twenty five pounds 'cause he made a pretty strong case for it in the post fight press conference..

I just wanted to ask what do you give you know, the first show on ESPN overall grade base off the flow based off of you know, performances commentating, I truly like Trevor Wittman being added as the coach factor. I liked that enjoyed that. You know, kind of had a paper pay per view esque feel mix it a little bit of old FOX, Tennessee. What they did they would just flopping onto name production does well, but I kinda expect it a little bit more. I did like the intro. I kind of wish they would lean more towards that fact flow. But I just wanted to ask overall. What did you give you have see Brooklyn grade? I appreciate you guys. Also, my parents are like oh, th they like when he gets so cold, and I'm like, it's sixty six that's like literally like sixty degrees more with one tenth the temperature here. Yeah. Okay. What did I give? I would give it a pretty high grade. I've made this point on the post fight show, Danny which was they learned a lot from that. I talk show where they had the one fight in quickly Q matches. They done the one fight this time. It would have been half the length of J D S versus Kane one. It didn't want it that they had a much better presentation. It a really I thought a pretty good card to be honest with you. So people were bellyaching about. It I liked it. But here's what I think..

I mean, we're expecting to do expecting the come sod and try to throw a big bomb right in and I was finding on duck underneath and shooting in and get my take down. Once I got him on the ground. You know, what I mean that last time they've been in the fight. But then the knee came out of nowhere and got me me solid. You know? On this thing. I guess so he had made a point. Yeah. He he made the that. He thought you were getting up. He thought, oh, I'm gonna need this guy as he gets to his feet were you trying to get to your feet. I mean, not really Assam saw moving over to the side. And I was I was just waiting on the phone that bomb. You know? I knew that with my knee down. He couldn't both any in my head. You know sauce kinda, you know, really look into the void that and then you know, restart going to decide the natives came out of nowhere. So did you feel like a lot of times guys say when they get hit with the big shot like that? They don't even feel it until later. It's not like a like a liver punch or something wh-. How were you physically and more stunning than anything? Yeah. I mean, I felt back to my back. And I knew that you know, he wasn't allowed to do that. Like, all right. We'll take take second some back. Oh, we begin to go. And then the doctors come running in there, and they really stopped the fight and whatnot new. I mean the getting back there in the back for like, thirty minutes. You know, what I mean, it has to there and talk me ask me questions much crap. Like that, you know. I mean, I'm not excited with the with the the win. I don't feel like it's really a wind. You know? Like, you know, it is what it is. But. Do you? So you don't have any lost memory. You. Remember, the knee and everything after him. Okay. Well, that's a good sign. That's a much better sign. All right. I'm happy to hear that. So so then it says if you're not satisfied with the wind, but you were doing really well. I mean, did you feel like if that had not happened? You were on your way to perhaps a decision victory or something more. Oh, yeah. No. I mean, I feel like if had that new not hit me in the head. You know, I feel like I was going to get them back on the ground. You know what? I mean. I said I had left in the tank, and and I gotta get him on the ground. I'm not finished with elbows guy planned on you know, from the beginning. Did you hear the crowd chanting for you? And then calling him asshole. So I didn't hear that. But I know my family friends over there, they autumn. He was getting a very hard time. That's putting it mildly. So okay, people have said, I don't believe this. But you were there. Maybe you have a better idea. People have said that he was facing adversity and he threw that illegal knee on you because he wanted a way out you buy that theory. I don't think he was looking for a way out..

"Stance. Switching if you're ready to be in a position that's an important part of your offense. But if you're not it might get you in trouble, and you got a game plan or within the sky you saw over and over again you come into 'em. He's going to greet you with right hands. If you're clinched is going to be in a lot of right hand attacks. He likes that. Right. So you can go either side, by the way but start right kick to the body and the southpaw stance. He likes to go to the head. If it's part of the larger repertoire again taking advantage of Hernandez, his heart step you'd get too close to him or he Bleene down just making a knee counter possible. And he was telegraphing for taking these wide steps and that closing the distance and the right way, catching Hernandez on the exit. He would throw a punch maybe landed. Maybe it didn't. And it would just stand there. So only what set them on fire same Cy Clinton tax would just been over. And then flurry as Hernandez Lynn linearly retreated, which is part of Hernandez on the exit not really getting there. So if you're not exiting properly, and then you're retreating a straight line due to guy like he's going to say. You up. So when somebody tells you Donald Surani we won via head kick, bro. Do not sell. This man short do not sell one of the winningest if not the winningest fighter in UFC strikeforce pride WBZ history. Do not sell him short by saying he landed a head kick, bro. Because there are so much more to his game. There is so much more to his offense. There's so much more to what he's capable of doing that. Frankly, that's a bullshit answer. And I won't accept a dos. Aronie is a bit of a throwback. But in the best way possible throwback like vintage throwback like this thing. It's better like a fine wine. Everyone's trying new tricks. He stays with what works. I take my hat off in a perverse sense to Donald cowboy Surani that is the Monday morning analyst. All right. Let's bring him in. Our next guest, man. He's shocked me shocked me at media day when well after me actually, let me back up I talked to him today. And I thought well, this was a great interview. He was very very nice. And then he wins, and he retires, and I'm like, wow, what happened there? That's so crazy, but he did Dennis Bermudez decided to hang them up. Call it quits on on Saturday after a nice win. He joins me now in studio areas the menace himself with a nice ever may beat mug. How are you, sir? What's up, man? Thanks for coming on. I appreciate it. Did you get here? Okay. Yeah. "And I've got a great Monday morning analyst plan for you dunks as well. All right. So I believe Eric is here we put that away. I believe Eric is here, and we're going to move him in Ceuta here. Just momentarily think there, Mike and them up. How about that? You have seen on ESPN events. Right. Pretty good. I think I would say all in all it was a little nerve wracking when they had to kill time at the end of the Duke. UVA game. Good thing. It didn't go to overtime. There wasn't a lot of other channel options for them to push that broadcast. But it was a great lead in. Although if you've not seen Zion Williamson, I don't know what you're doing. But I think generally the ESPN embrace was I'd give it like. B plus a minus. I mean, I'm sure the folks they're one a higher grade. And again, I'm pretty satisfied with the numbers apparently, adding nearly six hundred thousand subscribers for ESPN plus over the weekend, some people having some ESPN plus issues, which we'll talk about a little later in the sound off or maybe with some of your tweets, but. But mine was flawless the event went off. Really, well, it felt bigger than it. Ordinarily would have been like it would have been a big event. No matter what. But the ESPN handshake. So to speak made it feel a little bit bigger. The crowd in Brooklyn was pretty good. So all in all a great start to the ESPN era and a half to say Henry pseudo the crown jewel of the whole experience to be quite honest with you. I wasn't sure how that fight was going to go. I guess I was leaning a little bit dillashaw. But man, Henry pseudo is not to be trifled with them here to talk about him. Now is his guest my favorite person in the world. That's strong statement. But he's pretty close. He is as coach his mentor is friend. It's Eric about a scene. Thanks for having me, my friend. The trademark white glasses. The story behind those actually was the story. Actually, the glasses started in Brazil on the ultimate fighter. Brazil first week one of the fighters got cut, and I didn't want the you know, you live in your house with your opponent. So I didn't want them to see where he was cut, and it was close to Halloween, and I say, you know, what I got a pair of glasses with with a SCO on it. I go I bet that would distract your opponent from looking at the cut on the side of your eye. So he wore the glasses all week ended up fighting in. We avoided them seeing where the cut was then the next week. I had left the glasses inside the the workout room the practice before the next team came in which was at the time Verdun team. And then they took the glasses, and they did like a voodoo thing against with my glasses. I had a bad Dan ended time, and they did candles around. All the other fighters pitchers, those it was kind of like for reality. And then. The glasses became a thing. Like when they took my glasses. We went lost four straight, and I got him back, and then we won four straight. And then we won the shows then. I'm blind without ochre. All right. Did you wrestle with context? No, no. No. I didn't. How'd you Russell? I'm joking. They're not. Okay. So they're just for sugared. They just were the there my business card fair enough. They pop I one time did an interview at a local news station when Mike eastern on remember him..

Take a tiny creature from Brazil whose name is longer than it is the, but he is broad snout casque headed tree frog. It likes to hang out in the little puns that form in cavities within Ramilia plants. These tiny pools are technically known as Fido tell Mata from the Greek words for plant and Pont. A male finds Melia and attracts a female who lays her eggs directly into the water. The male stays behind to guard, the eggs and the tadpoles spending the rest of his life within that one plant, but not just any Ramilia pool will do it's so crazy that all some really nice big permits in never found our rock there. If I. Would be the frog. I would like that for minute herpetologist miracle Solway from Brazil's state university of Santa Cruz coating his graduate students, Amanda lantern Silva brought Dan we may did research, and we saw that they were trade-offs in all solo and his team surveyed two hundred and thirty nine Ramirez within a protected part of Brazil's Atlantic rainforest of which seventy four were occupied by frogs. The frogs preferred big bre Melia ads, but the very largest bromellias were unoccupied by the frogs, which suggests there's a Goldilocks situation are the researchers think it has to do with the size of the frogs alligators shaped heads if the Bermudez water tank was too large and the frogs head can't form a tight seal around the opening which would make them and their offspring and easy meal. But if the pool was too small it might dry out completely. So they are really picky. Concerning day their houses, they need to clean house with fresh raw too. And it should not be large not small. The study is in the journal plus one so many says these findings remind us that we need to think about the nuanced habitat needs of species when it comes to conservation. It's not enough to bring some frogs and release them into the rainforest. We also need to ensure they're able to find the habitats they need to live may end raise their young. Thanks for listening for scientific Americans. Sixty seconds science. I'm Jason Goldman.
