The FDA has ordered the company to remove its vape pens and pods from the market or face enforcement actions. Joining us live to talk about it, New York Times health and science reporter Andrew Jacobs Andrew thanks for being with us this afternoon. Thank you. Thanks for having me. You know, from what I've read, this was a real surprise to Juul who expected it to pass without any problems. Yeah, I think they were pretty confident it would get approval. So yeah, it did come a bit of a shock to them. And to many other public health experts. So what's the issue about here? FDA says that they received conflicting and complete data on basically chemicals in the jewel pod that they said could potentially be inhaled by users. They didn't say there was an actual imminent threat, but they said the data they got from Juul when they asked about this was not enough to make a determination. So based on that, they asked, are they ordered jewel off the shelves? Well, why Juul compared to other vape products? Are there differences here? Well, any company that is trying to sell a product has to get approval now from the FDA. It's part of this new regulatory role with E cigarettes. So really, this is really separate from other products. And other products have been approved. So and Juul can come back with a brand new product and apply. So the game is not necessarily over for Juul, but this is definitely a setback of the company. It just kind of curious. Have there been studies done on E cigarettes, so it's to compare and contrast with regular tobacco products? Yeah, there's a really growing bob Evans saying that E cigarettes are much less harmful and do help smokers quit. But there are a lot of unanswered questions about what is what chemicals and what contaminants are in these products. So I think the FDA has really just going through, you know, there's thousands of applications for products and they have to go through each one and determine whether they are a risk to public health. On a similar note earlier in the week of the FDA announced plans to cut the amount of nicotine in traditional cigarettes, how does that figure in into the larger goal of improving public health? Well, that's, in my view, a much, much bigger development. And that is huge. If this rule is going to do fact, obviously, the details have to be determined. But it could reduce nicotine levels in cigarettes by 95%, which would essentially make cigarettes non addictive and unappealing to new smokers and could help sort of wean smokers office cigarettes and get them nicotine replacement therapy, other ways to get them off of cigarettes. But that would be a sea change in how we regulate your background in those country and could be huge. Just quickly with the tobacco industry pushback on that? Oh, absolutely. Yes, that's the main concern here is that this may not survive the power of the tobacco industry. Andrew, good to get your perspective. Thank you for helping us on this. Thanks for having me.
