"Welcome to late edition of ESPN FC I'm Dan Thomas joined the studio by Craig Burley. Real Madrid back in action after the World Cup and they go top of the table after a two zero victory over violin. They were made to work hard for it though in a controversial penalty would really change the game in the 83rd minute Benzema converting what was accused of being at handball in the box as a result Leon sent off for swearing at the official Benzema and getting his second to see Real Madrid take all three points that puts them for the moment one point clear of barsa who take on espanol on Saturday. When I welcome in shall we? Luis Suárez as well as as is Sid Lowe. Suarez. I do that. Far too much. All the time. Lewis got to see her is with us, as is Sid low. That's just my comment. It's a lot. It's been a really busy Christmas. Luis. Let's get to the crunch of it. Was it a penalty for you? I think I was going to call more the first chance that first challenge than the second one. Second one is a little bit harsh. It's soft. Once again, you can see that the defender kind of opened a little bit on but it's pushed a little bit, so that I'm even go higher to receive the ball. Doesn't even know where the ball is. I understand that it's far away. And from his body, so I understand that the referee decided to call it and pointed it this fall, but definitely for me, I think it's up very soft. You can see right there a little bit in this replace very difficult to see a weight and for the call from the video but there doesn't even see the bullies not trying to make Intel big. It's just in the air so you can not control your arms in the air. You can not boost your hand in the air when you don't even know where the body so

"Is still with us. Joseph is a bit of a turnaround from these revelations last week. Well, it is and I think by himself to the mix zone to speak to us and I think he had to count things down because the way the story last week just imploded within the club outside of the club I pretty much everywhere. I think it was so big that maybe took the Mbappé clan by surprise in a way. And I think he said the right things did the right things. He hasn't spoken to the club yet, so it's not like if he said to them, I want to live in January yet and also we explain that it's probably more likely for him to move in the summer more than in January straight after the World Cup where I don't think anyone will come with that kind of money for him anyway. So I think he did the right thing to count things down, especially after such a big important win in the biggest game of the season in France. So welcome to for coming, but listen, if you wanted to deny the story, he would have done it a long time ago, not just on Sunday Night. That's what that was. Like tracking. Absolutely. Well, yeah, because there is no point in continuing to have this conversation. He felt that pushback, he felt the blowback and said, well, either I get ahead of this or this is going to continue and there is nothing positive that comes out of this. In particular, to his image, which I think was the biggest damage here, what everybody's opinion of Mbappé was prior to last week and what it became after last week, I think even a guy like Mbappé would be sensitive to that in that, you know what? Maybe we take this off the table and we talk about this some of the time because right now is obviously not the right time and it's not the right environment to do so. And they might seem to be getting along on the pitch, though, Jules. Well, yeah, the way you said this is his first assist of the season. But he created big chances before it was just out messy Neymar. Through the season,

"Again because a mistake essentially costing city that match is not the way that people would want it to be the two sides, you know, they're very well matched up. But at the end of the day, this is football and this is what it's like going to a place like Anfield. They will punish you if you do make mistakes because as we've seen probably a thousand times over, then push on in second half and score in front of the car. At times, it feels inevitable. And as somebody who's followed city for a while, they've won that twice this century. So let's be clear these moments here for cities. It's almost feels like deja vu and it's a shame as I say, it came from a mistake because of rock and salad this season has been exceptional, but that's the unorthodox nature. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't, and against the best you will be punished for it. Robert, what are your thoughts on it? Exactly as I can in his way, he's got to be he's got to play safe. He can't try and win the ball in that manner and try and win it in Sally's one V one. The ball's been played long. He's got to play safe. He knows he's probably got the same pace as seller. So he's got to try and defend it with seller in front of him. He made a mistake, Sal it goes through and scores. And nedam is absolutely absolutely right. When man city go to Liverpool, Liverpool about the only side that you can see rattle Manchester City. I saw Athletico Madrid do it last year, but the atmosphere, whatever it is, the referee allowing one or two challenges to go as well from Liverpool. The crowd getting behind the team, the game becoming a bit fragmented, the game becoming a bit volatile. That suits Liverpool and not men city and man city seem to always struggle at Anfield because of the sort of intensity that livable player. So it was a good result for Liverpool, of course it was. Yeah, clean sheet for Liverpool as well, robbo. You've been saying for a while at Trent Alexander Arnold, isn't good enough at the back. This game, we saw James Milner playing at right back. Is it a coincidence that it was a clean sheet for Liverpool? Well, it's surprising that they get a clean sheet when you've got a right back that actually wants to defend and knows how to defend and wants to recover and wants to see danger and wants to put his foot in. You know, Alexander Arnold over the last three or four years. He's a great player going forward. He gets lots of assists, but don't play him as a right back. Or if you are going to blame as a right back, he's got to do the right things. He's got to get back into position. He's got to be better in one V one situations. And Jürgen Klopp can't keep making excuses from. He's a right back first and foremost. If you're not going to tell him to defend or show him how to defend, then playing somewhere else, blame is the right wing. As he did when he brought him on in the second half in the 90th minute, I think Liverpool are better side defensively when he's not playing. Nathan. Yeah, I would agree with that. And I think you heard club recently talking about how, you know, wherever he would be as manager. He loved stuff trying Alexander Arnold and he said. So I want to see if there's a man of his word unless he's going to be at Liverpool for the next ten years. As manager, then yeah, see him go somewhere else if he wants him, or if maybe some of those defensive frailties are actually more of an issue. And James Milner can do a job can do a job anywhere. But you don't necessarily see it as a long-term plan. And I'm sure Trent Alexander will come back in. But he had these defensive issues. This is like everyone's biggest problem with him. And I think it's an interesting position whereby you sort of ignore that because you say, oh, it can get across in or you know, he's got an eye for a pass. As some stage, you know, defending has to come first, especially when science can be so equally matched. I don't think that's kind of what we saw with concealer making that mistake at that point. And if China has Under Armour was playing that game, you probably would have seen city, maybe you go ask him just that bit more. So yeah, it's a big decision for Klopp at some point, maybe kind of making best or maybe he's decided this is just what it is. And it won't matter for most of the season, but in the key moments you hold for them that it doesn't in terms of the odds make has not much has changed from Manchester City. They are still big favorites for the title, but arsenal

"And everything just doesn't add up. So Rodrigo does him and then this contact and it's a penalty, a 100%. Not for you, though, rubble. Well, I go with along with jewels. If a defender doesn't play particularly well and they don't really like him, just give a penalty. That's all right. As far as I was concerned. I don't like Eric Garcia, either I'd give a pony, but on this occasion, we were close, I thought it wasn't a penalty when I saw it live. We didn't have a monitor with us. And then when I saw the replay, yes, there's a slight bit of contact, but if you had to make a decision, I wouldn't have given a penalty. No, no penalty for me. Robo, Eric Garcia, is performances consistent with someone who's starting for Barcelona in Spain. I'm not a fan of him, as I said, when I saw him at man city is playing in their reserves playing for their youth team and when he did play in the first team, I'm not sure what he's attributes are. He's not particularly quick. He's not particularly good in the air. He's okay on the ball. Yes, they played quite well when he came out with the boys started later on in the second half, starting their moves, but he had all the time in the world to play at that particular point. I just don't see what he's attributes are. He doesn't read don't. If you're not particularly quick and you're not good in the air, you have to read danger. And he doesn't read danger. I just don't see him as a top class center half. Made him? Yeah, I was going to say in regards to Eric Garcia. I know quite a few city funds. You were always puzzled by the flat seat was playing to city, and then when the chance for Barcelona came in to get in, there were more than happy to see him leave. So then you see him go back there and he's playing week in week out. It feels like I'm making big mistakes, but he's also like a full international. So you do really want to know what happens behind the scenes. Is he like magnificent in training? But then for some reason, can't do on a match day. It's such a curious curious case because as it stands, I don't know that many people that like him, but in the same breath, Pep Guardiola seems heavy likes him and the Spanish manager likes him. He is still here we are and Jules makes very good points that realistically, you know, I don't want to write him off completely, but I would kind of agree with some of the stuff that he's just mentioned there. Well, first of all, I didn't know that I don't know where allowed when we were asked to take a position.

"No doubt who the most deserving and I don't think anybody can make an argument for anybody else. And you just mention a name there. Christiana Ronaldo, who we know very well that can invent semi used to do the dirty work for Christian or not. The goals and rightfully so because he is Christian Ronaldo. When Christina Ronaldo worked out the door and he was gone, all right? Drama Andrea Madrid. What's going to happen? How are we going to be able to cope? How are we going to score important goals? I'm getting better. I got this guys. You guys can start us out if you want to, but I got this. I don't know that many people believe that this was possible. Then it is possible now and certainly deservedly so for cutting Benzema. Yeah, he was there all along. Laden, you get the final word on this one. Happy to see Karim Benzema with the Ballon d'Or. Yeah, very much so I think you have an exceptional season and the award is very much justified and you know something that's caught my eyes as I look to the top 5 then. All 5 of those players are above 30 years of age. Even though it feels like it's a younger person's game now, that's where all the attention goals is still just goes to show that the experience in this understanding of the game goes so far and to input into context. I don't know what the rules are in Spain. But in England, it bends on the turns 35 and December. If you do a pension, that's how old it is within the game itself. So please have that sort of season that sort of impact is truly, truly incredible. And as I say, deserves it because obviously it's the darling of so many Madrid fans, but it definitely broke a lot of hearts last season for a lot of teams. Thanks for making us all feel old NATO. "Soon to be 35, he's also the result of an incredible year when you look back at 20, 22 for Kai and Benzema, and yes, this season so far has been a bit more difficult because of injuries and because maybe not the same form that he had between January and May, but what he did in the Champions League, carrying that team taking it all the way to the top to the league and to the Champions League, of course, and I think that's why the Holy Grail families his and to see him on stage with his with his man with his dad with his Sony by him as well as very emotional night for French people for coming Benjamin of course and his family but for everybody that through his life and his career has been either close to him or known him or spoke to him and when he shares with you this dream of winning the Ballon d'Or and when you see him finally doing it, I think it means a lot. LA only went for you or was there somebody else who could have been in the run and do you think this year? No. No doubt or winner can be. When you think about the importance of cutting Benzema to Real Madrid and it's obvious to think about the goals, think about the big moments that he had in Champions League. But think about also the presence of cutting Benzema and the difference that he made when he was on the field has to when he wasn't on the field. The decline of Real Madrid without Karim Benzema in the field, particularly last season was steep. Very noticeable. It tells you that this is a player that is much more than just the goals. And the goals themselves were important, but he is present, being the focal point, the leadership, the fact that you know us teammates that here is a guy that can resolve an issue for us. When we're in trouble and when we need a goal, we don't have to look around. We know this guy, not only is he good enough to do it, but he has proven time and time again that he was able to do it for Real Madrid during Champions League, do it in La Liga with consistency and no longer in the shadows of anybody else. But here he is taking that step forward and now becoming the best player in the world. Yeah, no, it's his time to shine. There's some elite strikers out there right now, robot. We've got erling Harlan from the new guard. We've got Karim Benzema, Robert Lewandowski. You had a big game tomorrow and you could only pick one of those. Are you going for Big Ben's? I'm afraid I would go for harland at the moment. I know he didn't score in the game against Liverpool, but he's still the striker. I think it was score more goals than anybody else at the moment, but take nothing away from Karen Benzema as the two guys have just said over the course of the last year. He's been absolutely brilliant and he doesn't do it in a conventional way. You know, he's not the out and out center forward. He drifts into wide air as he drops deep, but he always arrives in the box at the right times as he did for his goal. Yes, he was behind the play, but he arrived at the right time, a decent finish. He's a leader and Ali's absolutely right. Last season, when he didn't play for Real Madrid, they looked at totally different side. He's been outstanding for quite some while now and he fully deserves that Ballon d'Or. Who do you least want to face tracker in a big game tomorrow of those three? I'm with Robert in that who at least like to face right now Ellen Holland. If I was picking a team right now, I'd pick early in Holland. But to that point, I don't think they can be any to be that Karim Benzema was exactly the player that Real Madrid needed to have this season that they did. Speaking about the others, whether we took 11 or Holland, it's all hypothetical. But Karim Benzema was every single thing that Real Madrid needed all season long, both domestically and in Europe. The other thing about the Ballon d'Or this year and the lack of debate around who should win it is that for as long as I can remember, you can fashion an argument for somebody else, whether we're talking last season, but Lewandowski or Messi or going back to the decade that Messi and Ronaldo dominated, you could always maybe fashion an argument for the other one. As it were. But just as impressive a list as this is, there is absolutely

So I'll <Speech_Music_Male> have to go <Speech_Male> first one with <Speech_Music_Male> that one and then the C <Speech_Music_Male> second one and <SpeakerChange> then have a <Speech_Music_Male> number three. <Speech_Music_Male> Final <Speech_Music_Male> question. <Speech_Music_Male> That's away from Real <Speech_Music_Male> Madrid actually and Ben Simone, <Speech_Music_Male> which is dominated. <Speech_Music_Male> No, as you would expect the <Speech_Music_Male> conversation. <Speech_Music_Male> Should <Speech_Music_Male> Frank Lampard read <Speech_Music_Male> Frank's book? <Speech_Music_Male> Well, <Speech_Music_Male> we've talked about this. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Music_Male> Well, <Speech_Male> well, I <Speech_Male> would say that if he carries <Speech_Music_Male> on losing <Speech_Music_Male> games like that, <Speech_Male> it might go <Speech_Male> into depression <Speech_Music_Male> and then I will send him <Speech_Music_Male> the book. But <Speech_Music_Male> still <Speech_Music_Male> give him some <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Music_Male> somehow. <Speech_Music_Male> Two Frank, <Speech_Male> love Frank. <Speech_Male> <SpeakerChange> That is it. <Speech_Male> We're done. "My man, oligarch. But still, they had the chance and there is no way that one manager can solve this and it's quite interesting to see the Manchester United fans if they are completely honest. They didn't know who ten hag was. They had to Google him for the last two or three months. And if we say that it was the best thing he has done in Holland. Yes, there is a lot of manager who can win in Holland, but this was the guy who was availability if they said that Tina was the alternative, maybe that was more difficult, but I can't believe that Manchester's united, one of the biggest brand in the world, one of the most loaded clubs in the world should choose ten hard because it was a cheap solution. There must be someone thinking that this was the best solution for the club. And just if I may add done, they're put in Ralph ragnarok to kind of help them to build a club because he was a club builder and so on. You can agree or disagree if that was a good idea, but it seems as he's been 100% on the sideline. So Manchester United just keep on driving like a ship like going forward back and they will keep doing that in ten hug, go to unbelievable job ahead of it. First of all, is to try to close the windows in the dressing room because it seems they have vote for everything that Manchester United is going to do. And maybe Mark, who has got so good, good sources of Manchester United soon we will have the votes. It was 24 one decision and 5 against one. I mean, that is so embarrassing. That a big club, like Manchester United, should they need to solve? I lost it on this year, Craig. Again, it's just the unknown, I hope it works out for him because I think, you know, it'd be good to see man united back competing again. But it's a long way off. You know, I think they're probably going to lose pug back again on a free transfer for the second time. We're talking about bad business. Biden's business after 5 business after by business. It's recruitment. It's football structure at the club and it's how much power the legacy ten had will have over the financial executives at that football club and on Russia it is a huge job, particularly when you look at where Liverpool and Manchester said the assault effort as ten high regression well, but by a struggle to see how that is going to tell their ship around and anything maybe four or 5, maybe even 6 years trying to take a while. "Man. I think there's no doubt ten haggard has been a great CV in Holland Dubai. I was just no doubt about that. I don't know as you stop. There's also not a doubt that I'll know it's been problematic recently. What watch of Tina did a Tottenham? If you look at Willie wear before and where they are now, was actually quite amazing. But I would hate to think it's just the chosen ten hag over project channel because there's a few extra million here or there. Building the main home in millions, they have thrown away and the last 5 or 6 years. So I thought, no, it's a difficult one. I think it's a better appointment than certainly the mid and recent years. But I find it hard to convince myself that who is the man that's going to Tom the chaperone because they're not just so many problems in that club. What happened to pochettino Jules? That's a really good question and I think that's one of the questions that comes with the ten hike move to united of course is that I think both budget and PhD really saw the united position as the right ending. You can go there. We get a bit of money and then we can go and get as many things done if someone else or whoever because clearly they don't really want pochettino there next. You don't even if you still have one year left on his contract, the problem is if there's not any more the united option, then you might have to keep him even if that's not really what you want is going to be one that the Pierre Iraqi will have to decide on. You can still get rid of him of course and pay him over the last year of his contract and then go and get someone else but that's not really what they had in mind. They really thought that united would come for him. So this is going to make partitioners future more uncertain for sure and certainly more difficult to sort out the united one for who they thought was the best choice. What do you think of this, Jan? Well, I think I agree with the boys in terms of Manchester's united got so many problems. And if you, if you think that one man can change that, then you have to have the best. They had a chance to get to hold. They had to chance to get contact. Then, of course, they had to fire my man, oligarch. "Yesterday. A sports, but yeah, and Real Madrid were exceptional, obviously Pennsylvania was exceptional. You know, the goals that it took it could have had four really when you messed that, easy chance, probably the easiest chance to hide in the first half. But I just like to really control the game once they got over the edge you start. Customer I thought was brilliant, moderate, you know, unbelievable 36 year old. And I thought valve had the decision to play him was excellent. He walked that whole right hand side. And then on the other side, Venice is junior took more chances. Cheated a little bit, really put pressure on christiansen. And I think that's why Thomas took all how to make a change at halftime in terms of the shape, because Real Madrid were controlling the game. So yeah, first class performance. What's interesting, obviously, we've seen a lot of Real Madrid this seasonality in the sense that they were terrible against Barcelona. Not much better against celta Vigo, but when it comes to the Champions League, they just seem to find that next level. That first half is the best we've seen from Real Madrid arguably all season. And the way that they were able to absorb pressure while Chelsea was getting numbers or trying to get numbers around the ball and the calmness and confidence to be able to play through that pressure and once they play through that pressure, they are transitioning forward and when they're able to do that with time and space, they're just about better than anybody else in the world in that transition because they find that first pass had a pressure, connect that first pass and now you get Benzema involved. Now you get Venetians involved and Christmas is still trying to change when he's a junior. He can't quite figure out, do I get tied to him? Do I wait for him? He was able to then get in the head of Christensen and because of that, he got tied to him and by the time he got Titan Benzema was the one laying the ball off and while we want to focus on the goals by getting Benzema and rightfully so there were a few plays in the first half that had nothing to do with goals in which he freed up other players that tell you everything that you need to know about the player. The little back heel that he does in the first action in the attack from grand Madrid that ends up being the pose from Venetian junior. It tells you the vision, the movement, how smart and how intelligent he is and how he knows what's around him and being able to isolate Benzema, being able to isolate Venus junior, real Marie had to control the pace of the game. And even though they didn't have the ball when they did have it, unlike Atlético Madrid yesterday, they show an ability and they show ambition and saying, okay, this is our moment. We know this is our moment. We recognize it. Now let's go on the attack. Let's go and transition let's punish Chelsea and they did a very well. How good were those finishes, Jan from Benzema? It's unbelievable. I mean, I mean, I nearly start crying when I saw that second goal. I mean, no, but this heading does he's doing. For me, that is Leonardo da Vinci meeting Michelangelo somewhere and find out what do we do with a cross when the ball is coming like this? How do we do that? How do you use your head? He's using his head heading better than most player in the Champions League and shoot. I mean, Ben Simmons, what he did today and I agree with Al there were so many small things that he did this game. He's so intelligent. And it's not like we haven't seen that. There are some people who say he hasn't been good. He's been always been a good great player. I mean, he's won everything. And you just, yeah, what was that? But someone applauding for me that. But it's like unbelievable. You just feel that this team. They played together since puskas or D Stefano played together. You just feel that. And when you see Ben sama with this enjoyment, he's doing that. We just do it a hat trick for the second Champions League in a row. Nobody has done that. It's three other players who don't, it whole history of Champions League, and he just do it naturally. I mean, fantastic. I mean, we all of us, we see a lot of football games, and I kind of love these kind of moments because then it's all sitting through so many bad football games and so many bad finishing and then same idea does this fantastic, fantastic. And we talked about this before Craig, how obviously when Cristiano Ronaldo left, we thought maybe it would be bale who would step up and kind of take his place, but Benzema is coming and done that and it just exceeded all expectation. Who thought bill would take his place? Well, that was the theory, wasn't it? That was one of the talk was. Yeah, I'm not sure about that, but he no, he's just got better and better. And I suppose as everybody talks about skin and rarely saw, you know, they might have gorgeous called just his general play. When Real Madrid haven't been having some success in the top of the league and it's been a little bit of a struggle at times and a few watching La Liga, it's not always been convincing, but they've been getting results. He really has to carry the team that he had a little spell out engine and they tried everything and sundry to replace and try to focus to try your face.

"Normally feels comfortable in big locations. I think my opinion is because he's one of those special players because he's a player who can link into the middle a player who can keep the ball against Barcelona that normally they are going to be more dominant even though they are going to play again here at the Real Madrid. There's on the Alberta. It's a player who can give you things. Keep the ball, can combine. Can bring the ball to the situations where it could be a threat for Barcelona. So they acquired two, three players who can be at the moment being picked, but difficult at the moment to decide which one is going to be the one. And usually when we see Karim Benzema on the score sheet, we also do get to see another name on that tends to be Vinnie junior. They have been an absolutely lethal duo in all competitions really this season. How big of a night should Vinny junior have in this moment went in Benzema's absence? Well, he's been projected to be a world star. Now, and I think he's going to dazzle for Brazil at the World Cup as well, by the way, at the end of the year. But I think there's a fact that maybe we're missing here in discussing this game, the fact that Barcelona played on Thursday night, a tough game away in turkey. They've had the travel Real Madrid have had a clear week to get ready for it. That's quite a big advantage, Luis, isn't it? Definitely a B one because traveling arrive in res the true thing as well is that they've been doing a little bit of rotation. So it's going to have two or three players who didn't play their full 90 minutes. So the chubby looked like east enjoy and changing Frank the young pedre Nico got. They got a lot of play in the middle of the play, you can give a lot of intensity to the game. And I think that is real Marie struggled in these kind of situations. That's your honor. I think when we were talking just off camera before, I know there's a lot to talk about Karen Ben's been missing this one. But so is for Alan mendy and Luis, you actually think that that might affect the Al Madrid more than benzene was accident. For me, I think for this game is not about when it's not loosened. I mean, for Real Madrid at the moment, just getting a point is fantastic, because most of us are not going to get three. The things are going to continue the same, around money is going to be at the top. And you don't lose against Barcelona in the bigger classical. And mend is one of those special players that in the bag gives you so much. You got them better, probably, or Adama travel or a place where they are very quick, very fast. And they are very difficult to mark and while many is one of those special players who can help you with that. Also show that at the back, it gets involved. You can break lines with his physical position. So I think it's going to be a massive massive player who is going to be missed during the whole game because there is not all the player that I think at the moment can stop them belly on a big run. Darker, what do you think Mindy probably a bigger miss San benzo? No, not a bigger miss than Benson but nobody's a bigger miss than the men's. We should talk as well about the effect Obama Yang is having on Barcelona. He was out in the cold, and he was so far out in the colonies in the deep freeze. In fact, at arsenal. We are now. It's quite colder in Madrid. Scoring nearly every game. He got another one and he's confidence is high and Barcelona look much more of a threat with him around and dembele, the maverick dembele suddenly showing us what he can do, so I do think they carry a big threat here. And just quickly on that point, at least, do you think that now Barcelona pretty much need to win this more or want to win this more? Maybe that Madrid, especially with the point that the guys brought up that military definitely have their eyes on the champion zieg. Yeah, definitely. They got so much points from Barcelona that they are now in a rush to get disappointed Barcelona is about keeping the momentum. They want to continue improving, of course, getting results and giving something to believe to the supporters because this project has to continue and it's important to if you want a classical that's going to be for the rest of the season. All right, thanks guys. Well done. So any other classical classical is coming here to Madrid, and there's no Benzema, but we're still very much expecting a party. Thank you very much, Alex. It's what a game. It should be the Santiago burn them out. Now for more, looking ahead to that big classroom realm and trade and Barcelona. Be sure to check out our classic oak preview special..

"This is cool, this is a nice experience. So we've got rid of Joey. Right? He's off the list. The list is not great. You're not giving me much. No, no. I'm not working with a lot. But if I'm currently I'm saying, who are the players that I trust? And obviously he trusts Rodrigo coming off the bench, he has done that regularly. Maybe Rodrigo comes on the field and essentially who's also been a player who has been important for the Marie, will play in that sort of false 9 position. That's what I would do. Yes, I'm not trusting anybody else. Because honestly, they haven't given me any reason to believe that they can do the job. There's a reason as to why these guys are not playing consistently. There's been plenty of opportunities for current relative to rotate and believe me. While we think that kind of enchilada is just enamored with the starting 11, yeah, maybe so, but he's also not in love with what he has available coming of the bench and so therefore he has to settle with the starting 11 and I said, okay guys, hey, hang on for as long as you possibly can. So if I'm mentally, I'm trusting for what I've seen from this team and I'm going to say Rodrigo on the right hand side, a sense of false not. I'm thinking about that first leg against PSG Sid where all the talk was about Kareem Benzema and his fitness. Obviously he was risk for that tie. What is telling maybe going into the game tomorrow is the fact that Carlo Ancelotti is going to rest him with obviously the priority being the Champions League given the lead they have at the top of the table. And that is exactly why I don't think any Real Madrid fan is looking at this and think, oh, what a disaster. What a disaster that Karen Benzema can't play in the classic. In fact, I actually genuinely believe there are a lot of Real Madrid fans who are very pleased about this. A very pleased that Ancelotti has looked at this and thought, I don't take the risk. I do not risk carrying Benzema given the ten point lead at the top of the table. Given the fact that they're 15 points ahead of Barcelona, there is no point because it's the Champions League that really matters. And as you say, we saw in Paris at Benzema wasn't fully fit and shotty had said before the second egg, there's no way Tony cross plays unless he's a 100% and I think there is an element of lesson learned and more than anything else now an element of prioritization given what you already have in the.

"Course tomorrow is all about our classical realm I'm doing taking on Barcelona getting exclusive the live on ESPN+ coverage will start at 3 p.m. eastern. Said let's just head back to you, show me of course the big news coming out ahead of this game. Karim Benzema out with that calf injury that he picked up in the win against New Yorker, the big question is, who's going to replace him? Well, Carlo Ancelotti was talking through the options today in the pre match press conference. And he gave her a lot of options. He gave options that maybe would surprise me. He pointed out they played with Isco at the top of the pitch. He pointed out they played Marcus Marcos as a false 9 job which would be a natural candidate. He mentioned Gareth Bale and I think everyone in Britain thought, oh, Gareth Bale, that would be interesting. My guess is that he will add an extra midfielder and that he will play jovic up front. What would you do? Does Joey does he have a pulse? Is he still around? Huh? Are you kidding me? Yo, which can not be the answer. No. Look, if I'm a real man, and I'm thinking about all the options, possibly forwarded out of Madrid. Last on that list. I will reshuffle all sorts of different things instead of having your child. There simply because of what I've seen and haven't seen from him. And when I say does he have a pulse is because at times, this guy's body language, you would think that he is playing in some sort of Sunday league with his friends. And this is a random idea opportunity of a lifetime and whenever he does get his chances, he's just kind of like, all right,.

"At the airport and the guy was supposed to pick me up. Didn't know who I was. So I had to come to him because I saw his badge and I said, are you belonging to Chelsea book club? He said, yes, yeah, I'm Franklin but okay, nice to meet you. And we went to the training ground and it was it was an amateur training ground. It was close to Israel. We had to stop playing when the Concorde was taking off because we couldn't hear each other. When I went to the new journey, I forgot the name. I'm sorry. Chelsea. It's a different club. It's really a deep frame club. It's crazy because with all the players, the fantastic stars that we had alongside us with all our good and some others, you know, I think those players deserve a better facilities, but they never complain. It was a different era, we were just happy to play football in an English club and try to get some trophies. We didn't care about the at all. Now they have a hotel in the dressing room in the facilities, the facilities are absolutely fantastic, but we don't care about that. We want just wanted to have a food truck on Saturday and it was more than enough for us. Did you go on Concord Frank? Yes twice. Yeah, I have to say that that chance where I had a free flight with a French national team when we played a friendly in Senegal. So we had to go it was more politics than anything. And then I went to New York with the Concorde and I came back in the first class because I wanted to spend more time in New York. Yes, I had the chance to flight with a concordia. You would. You sleepy? Have you? Yeah. Have you? You paid to go on Concord. Yeah, but it didn't. There was a flight. It was gone from Glasgow, don't to London. Right. Well, I was on that one. He didn't take off. He only took the model way. But I said, yeah. How was it? That was pretty quick. I don't think he got a lot of fourth gear. But what about you rob, I bet you have back in the day, robbo? I'm afraid not. Now I can't brag about that. I certainly haven't been on Concord. Glasgow to London trip. Okay, but you know, you know one thing done, done, done. You know one thing is when you are over the earth, over the land, sorry. For example, for Glasgow against London,.

Dot Freddy's box so he can bring something else, you know? And I never said because of threat. Meanwhile, on Wednesday in the Champions League, it's against Liverpool, Liverpool going to the tyres as big favorites obviously enter a bit of a rough couple of weeks losing the Milan Derby one one against Annapolis, yesterday. How do you see into chances going into this tie rob? I don't give them a great chance into a decent size, but as you said, they've had a couple of poor results. They're not playing at a high intensity at times. They've got edin dzeko, can't really run him behind these days so they're relying very much on the wingbacks and parachutes. One of them, the left hand side, done freeze down the right hand side. And I think they could be exposed by Liverpool Liverpool on the counter attack plane at high intensity within the ball back, get in the ball in behind his back three. I think it could be a tough tyre for I think Liverpool will go through. A lot more Champions League talk on the latest edition of the Gavin Giles podcast, Champions League PSG airplane. "Opposition here. In PSC, there's a lot of pressure on PSG to win this tournament. And I think they feel that from the opening whistle, they'll want to win this in the first leg. If you could deny them that. If you can take a little bit of window to their sales, I think Ramadan does that. I think they go on and win it in the second leg. So for that reason, I think you take that chance with Karim Benzema, though you don't push it to the limit. Frank, give us just a sense of occasion in Paris looking into this tie with two European giants going head to head over these two legs. Well, everybody is very excited. And they're looking forward to seeing the game and I was in Paris today and it's like it's already a final for some Parisian. It's a dream. Reimagined has been a souvenir or memory sorry. For like 20 years ago or even more than that, almost 30 years ago in 19 45, where Paris is a man bit Rea Madrid four one at the park de France and I think it was a qualifying. And so they think that they can go through that stage and they want to see it. But if I may to go back to a Benzema, I disagree with a guy, I don't have in my mind a guy, especially a striker, who made the difference, not being fit just coming back from injury. I never had somebody who made the difference coming back from an injury. We can agree that benzene is not fit because he has no games in his fit, is not back to his best is one beer and one person. I will never reach that because he's such an important player when he's 100% fit, and again, name me a guy really name me guys a guy who came back from injury and made a difference. I don't have one. Meanwhile, Frank, what's interesting when you take a look at these two sides, despite the big names and despite the fact that both top of their domestic leagues, they're not exactly impressing at the moment. Real Madrid laboring of late and really, PSG are just all about killing him bappy without him, they're nothing. Yeah, it's like we are married without Benzema. It's nothing. You know? So it depends on those two players and persons is really,.

"It's true that they could still run the counters. It's true that barcelo vulnerable when they did so. But I must admit, and let's go back to what I'm saying a minute ago. For a midfield with cross and moderate in it, I think it's a little uncomfortable for real to have allowed Barcelona to have seen bars and have quite so much control. But yes, broadly speaking right. This works for them. It works. And it works very well for them. I like this chocolate bachelor's reaction up personally to the chavi effect. And the fact that we see this with managers come in, it gives them a list. You've got to charismatic guy and I think this team does have a ton of personality in younger players. Sticking with the game said mentioned the counter attack there. When Venetians accelerates like that, is he really that much faster than everybody else or are they slow? Was against him. So it could be. Well, no, but he's also leaving raoult behind, too. Well, there's that chance in the first half where we think actually gets injured. What we thought maybe the pretty fast as well to catch him in that forces, I think, finishes to take the shot, the shot would be early. But yeah, it's incredible that partnership between Benzema and Vinicius and the way they understand each other. And especially when you think back about the motion radar, incident and all of that is pretty remarkable. But if you play on Venice's strength, it's a bit like the earlier if you play on the young strength it can be good for you very good for you. If you play on the strength, it would be amazing for you. And accept the fact of space is probably a little more multi dimensional than the way they used them yesterday, the way they used them on Wednesday night is very one dimensional. I want to touch upon this state about the jewel set at the instruments of our partnership. Because I'm going to exclusively reveal to our listeners that it has his own podcast, which he does with a very, very handsome man named Phil kitter mellitus. Wait a minute. Wait a minute. On the handsome one. Honestly. If you like your man a little more her suit, you know more into pasty English people. But anyway, the point was, you pointed out that this is slightly media hype machine in the sense that it's not a partnership Benzema Vinicius because they play in a front three. Yeah. Is that just us being pedantic when we say this? There's no front three plus. It is pedantic, but it's also true that you kind of create the idea that this is a two. It seems a unfair on a sense of whoever the other one is. And B it's kind of artificially breaking up. Now if you're playing a four four two and it is a two man forward line, then I think it's slightly different. That said, that said, and this is where I contradict myself very slightly. It's very much becoming a partnership. Real Madrid are a team that are very much dressing to the left now. That Benzema, it's not just that Benzema is playing well, and Vince is playing well. It's loud playing well together, and they're combining while in Benton's drifting to the niches aside. And they're playing off each other a lot. In a way, by the way, but Benzema doesn't do with the right side of the tack up. So there is a partnership developing there, even if it's within a three. What I think is beneficial for ASCII in all of this is precisely that point. I think the more you watch Madrid gravitate to the layer. The more you see Ascension usually or Rodrigo or the spine there, following up the pitch on the other side, go, hey, there's no one anywhere near me. Right. Because genuinely, you're seeing the defense sucked in to that kind of what would you call it? I suppose, but zone of influence, which is which has been to mar and Venice. And I think that's beneficial for someone like a sensio, who can basically turn up into that empty space on the other side of the area. I'd imagine it's also linked to the fact that Ferdinand is one of those left backs who is a left back rather than an attacking left back the way a lot of people are a lot of modern gamer. You've got recycled wingers at fullback, whereas that naturally means that you can send two people over to that side, know that you'll have the cover behind with mendy, or maybe sometimes you can somebody you have to because Mandy is not going to go and take on the opposing right back a lot of the time. I'm going to ask you the existential question about Korean Benzema. Kareem the dream. I know George on this. But we have discussed it. I feel quite passionate about it, even putting my own 30 wishes for 2020, 2022, which is I want somebody to explain this to me. All right, so Kareem Benzema. In 2009, Kareem Benzema moves to Real Madrid. For €40 million. So young listeners today might be like, ah, what's this? €40 million, nothing. It's a bargain, right? €40 million in 2009. 21 year olds. Four 21 year old especially was just stupid amounts of money. If you look at what it was, except that Cristiano Ronaldo signed up for what was it 90 million at the same time? Right. So it was immediately dwarfed..

Karim Benzema Earns Real Madrid Draw Against Chelsea
"The back of the english newspapers dominated by chelsea's one one draw against rambler. We can pull this off a young a lot on the back. Page and stop in spain. Marker going with a draw to keep dreaming meanwhile benz emma is. It was an interesting game wasn't in the spanish capital dominated once again from a strike as perspective about team verners. Miss chances yagan thomas to coming out afterwards and saying you know this. Is this kind of life. This is what's happening with him at the moment. How much trust have you within him again. That he can find the back of the net once again. Maybe soon i've total trust in him because he knows where to be in the right time and right now maybe there. He misses one and that specific moment. So so that's something to deal with for strike. Oh and you have to kind of just think about the next opportunity comes along like you know michael jordan said so he missed more shots than east called and t-mobil no. It's just like you know if you fail moments it makes you only stronger and the kit is good. The kid has a tremendous amount of drive and talent and he knows where the ball will fall in the box and he can also know makes things happen himself of his speed and going at people. So i'm i totally have trust. And t mobile. He will go through that stage and who knows. Maybe he's causing the next game in the second leg or he's goals in the final of the champions league you know. He was very young when he was twenty. One being meaning the golden boot at the confederations cup in russia in two thousand seventeen and he scored one hundred goals in the gym bundestag already. And he's only twenty five to kit is good and a kid will prove it but obviously it has to deal with the criticism when you miss a big chance. That's normal night. Goalkeepers do as well when they make a mistake. You know the the all over them but I hope that he gets plenty of opportunities going forward.
