Long-term unemployment is looming

"Everybody, we are going to do a little labor market one, two, three by way of getting going to de. Item One this morning, the private payroll processor ADP gave us. It's guests is dominy jobs. The economy added last month four, hundred, twenty, eight, thousand, which is a nice hefty number but well, short of what everybody had been guessing, which was closer to a million speaking of million that gets us to labor market marker to the weekly report on new unemployment claims that will come tomorrow it'll be at or near a million people freshly out of work as it's been every week for five plus months. And speaking of months Friday morning, we'll bring the August jobs report. That's item three. We probably added jobs and the unemployment rate probably went down there end if the predictions. But there's a common thread that's running through the American labor market right now once you get past all the data and the indicators. As marketplace's Mitchell Hartman reports millions of Americans are facing the prospect of long-term unemployment. covid nineteen has not been good to the Life Events Business Rock Concerts and festivals pretty much shut down on a dime in early spring. That's when Jason George of Benton Harbor Michigan got laid off like many of my co workers in the industry we've been furlough for very long time initially, George was on temporary layoff from his job managing shows for a big event promoter. He got on unemployment his employer paying his benefits and he waited for a callback but summer still no concerts or call backs, and as of yesterday Georgia's employer has made his temporary layoff permanent benefits stopped at the end of the month it does feel different because there's not that safety-net. Could possibly go back sooner rather than later. So does feel official election we're kind of on our own to figure things out for ourselves. A lot more workers are likely to end up like Jason, George in coming months. It's very unlikely that if you've been furloughed for this length of time that you're going to go back, Daniel Sternberg is a data scientist at Gusto, an HR platform for small businesses he says. Furloughed back in March there was a thirty percent chance. You'd be called back by April because your company received funds or was able to reopen in some capacity. But then if we go out into future months smaller and smaller percentage is portraying tour and by July, a majority of furloughed workers were still waiting to be called back. And people laid off early in the pandemic are now approaching the Labor Department defines US long term unemployment more than twenty six weeks without a job jobless benefits start to run out people go through their savings to pay the bills and long-term unemployment decreases workers, chances of getting reemployed. Harvard economist Gabriel Chorro Reich and a colleague at the Fed have been projecting this out in our baseline stimulation in early twenty, twenty, one four and a half million people unemployed for more than twenty six weeks. More pessimistic scenario that number rises to one in five million that would still be fewer than the peak of six and a half million caused by the great recession. Recent polls have found that only a third of laid off workers think they'll be able to return to their jobs and a quarter of those who are still working worry. They'll lose their jobs as the pandemic drags on I'm Mitchell Hartman for marketplace.

"But like I say, you don't do it all at once. And you don't even know when you were initially do it on the one issue what it's going to mean for your life. You just think you're changing your mind on one issue? That's all it was with me. I thought I was changing my mind one issue and just offering another perspective on it. But here's what happens. Once your mind is open. It's open to what their things to. Usually what happens when you get to his red pill moment, the thing that takes you from a liberal conservative, the liberals have gone, so far in your mind is opening his third saying, you know, this is stupid. It does it work. Now, you're thinking in the way, it does at work. That's all I can serve it. If things liberals think about how things if it makes you feel good. I believe. For some people. And you never know these things until months later because people are coming to these conclusions individually over time it takes a while for it to sink in. If you're changing an ideology, I believe. These abortion laws being passed in the United States. That are now going to allow abortions to be performed after birth as advocated by the governor of Virginia, and has many people believe is going to be the impact of the New York law, which has already passed. This is going to be a red pill moment for some people. Who support? Well, I support a woman's right to choose the set of the other thing, and they've convinced themselves that the baby and the woman is somehow not a person they're going to be some of them whose wait a minute. This baby is going to be out of the woman, you still get to kill it. Wait a minute. It's not like it's the masses these red pill moments never occur in masses. It's in some individuals. Just come to the conclusion here and there and so forth. Paul mentions abortion was eight yet. The ultrasound. His when a tremendous red pill moment, it's one of the reasons why weirdly that you're seeing in liberal states than passing extreme abortion laws establishing this is a right that can't ever be restricted at all because they're terrified the public is moving the other way on them. So they want to win great graded as a right? So it doesn't matter what anybody thinks. It's right. That's been established. People see the ultrasound. Visit anything I've learned in light beam. You better not you know, that I've learned this light because I bring it up for thirty years react strongly to that that we see that the way merely here about. It's a flaw in human perception. Sometimes the most unreliable evidence is the evidence that we see. But it is how people think they hold their little stick stick on the woman's belly. And there's there's the kid. Looks like an actual kid it this isn't this isn't like blabs at tissue. This isn't like my tended in there. It's not like look at at a rib like a human being in. There doesn't it? Then they tell you what the gender is. Then you see the baby start to move on your feel at it. Then they tell ya. I see you the heart. Heart's beaten in there. Becomes harder for a lot of people then to kill that entity and not understand for some people that was their red pill moment, there's a lot of them. I've told the story a million times I won't tell it at length. I didn't have a red pill moment so much as I had a red pill year. I worked for a year in Saint Joe Benton harbor Michigan. Saint Joe is very affluent bad Benton harbor which dirt poor. Weirdly, the suburbs of Benton harbor were very affluent tuba the city Abedin harbor itself. Was dirt poor and was operating entirely on federal money and outside aid. In fact, the year that I was there. Kind of the year. I made a name for myself. And I ended up going to Springfield as news director at a very young age perk story after story after story after story the year that I was there is the other Benton harbor was going bankrupt city of Benton harbor wanted to become the first city in the United States, the file for bankruptcy. They had no money. And the reason they had no money is because liberalism Michigan was a liberal state so much outside aid had poured into Benton harbor, forever and ever and ever. Did all laughed was poverty. The only people left in the city of Benton harbor were poor. And they were all miserable. Even though the budget of Benton harbor was massive massive state and federal aid that was coming in. And I signed up an elected this Benton harbor. I looked at the budget and Benton harbor is covered. This community has a fortune in assists. That's coming in here. How come everything's gone to hell how come the roads are all busted up the street lights were turned off one night by the power company. They hadn't paid their Bill. The car dealer was to repossess the squad. Cars at people think I make I make this up, and I say this. This was going on. The mayor and the city manager had to resign three weeks apart in both cases because of me. City manager. You never came back. The mayor got to come back. I found out that the mayor hadn't paid his property taxes. And there was something in the Benton harbor city charter that you can't be in debt to the city and still be elected official hadn't paid his property taxes in three years. The place is a complete mess. And it got me to question. All you know. I was you know, I've unthinking feel good liberal you want to help poor people. We gotta give them all these programs. You gotta give them all this assistance. We gotta get them welfare. We got to give them this out of the other thing because we're being compassionate. And I realize it does work for welfare does is reinforced his poverty. The more you give the likelier people are going to stay poor. Gradually over time. Given the fact that I question now, whether or not government programs support people actually wear compassionate. Or if they are the opposite. Well, if I was wrong about this. Maybe I'm wrong about all of it. So this time in my life. I sort of working my way through the whole issue of abortion, which again when you're young and particularly by generation, you know. There was this is coming on the heels of the antiwar the civil rights movement in the environmental that and all this other stuff quite fashionable. Even then to be liberal abortion was still a new thing though, abortion was at this period. That I was describing we're only going, you know, a decade after Roe versus Wade. We still have something that while legal. Most people said was terrible. And that was the early stages of abortion in America after we legalize it. Nobody actually said it was good. They just said it ought to be a choice. You're working your way to a lot of those things. But in any event, my mind was open to this notion that once if I'm Rog about the one thing, maybe I'm wrong about all the rest of it. And it took ten years to come all the way fully around. And it was a gradual period of time. But it started with that one issue. And when I questioned does this work and liberal, I'm a compassionate guy. Unlike these terrible Republicans, they don't care about people, and I certainly can compassionate shouldn't I actually want the poor people to be doing better. They're not doing better with all this welfare doing worse. I just Don dotty. Everywhere. There was massive poverty. There was massive government aid. Sudha connected the dots. And I question if maybe we didn't have all of these Dole's. And instead it flea incentivized success. Maybe things wouldn't be so bad though. There are a lot of what is vetnar. There are a lot of other things going on mean there just over racism and housing discrimination from the neighboring community of Saint Joe a lot of things continue to feed into by liberalism. And it wasn't like in that era. The liberals were wrong about everything they weren't..

But Emily blunt who plays Mary Poppins talk to people magazine, and she picked her favorite song from the movie, and it's can you imagine that though that down in Benton harbor favor. And I feel like this is going to be another Disney. Classic song that everybody's gonna love in the future. But Emily says Mary Poppins is really introducing the idea that anything is possible. And she does it in such a way that it sneaks up on the kid says something as mundane as a bath can become something extraordinary. And she did that's her favorite song from the movie. There's lin-manuel Miranda's have seen got yet. Because he I mean dude wins all sorts of awards and he's going to win some for this as well. I don't know if he is. Yeah. I don't think he is. But he will be what does he missing? We'd have to look it up. Yeah. You got to be an EMMY Grammy. Oscar Oscar's times coming. I'm Hollywood headlines. All right. Thank you. "You know access to Eddie forum at all so they do YouTube videos, and some of this other stuff sums offensive some is not some people are over the top summer within the mainstream. But anyway, what they all site is the same thing as a liberal. I raised the thick of like a liberal is that liberal universities. All my friends are liberals. I thought they remember liberal and finally something happened. And I said, wait a minute. They'd gone too far. There's different versions of this. But that's basically what it is. And then when they've gone too, far, that's the moment the mind open. Now, I'm intrigued by this. Because. I started out as a liberal. And I had my red pill moment to. This is before anybody knew what a red pill wise, it it was before you were programmed to be one thing or another. In the air that I was most young people were liberal, but not all. Paul says he's getting calls from people saying it's from the matrix. Okay. We've explained that. Now, all those people stop bothering, you know, they'll keep bothering even though I said that it's. I don't know how you do it in there. I'm gonna make I'm going to start taking a lot more calls because right now, the only people are bothering European lake like in situations like this a badge it if you had to do this all the time, you crack up. How did you do what we do you think people have gotten meter or not? They have. And we know liberals are getting meeting like the ones who just call you up. And just swear at you and say, can you can you imagine a conservative listening to MPR and pick it up the phone and swearing at this poor little producer at MP. I just can't imagine it. So they become vile as I'm not saying all some lefties, I suppose are nice, although try to find one right? Try to find. Why the dozen drive yet nuts? Joy behar. They're all joy Behar. Now, I trying to find two or three that you could engage at it is the other day. When did we get to the point where everything we ever talked about had to be about politics? I mean, I do get when some people see me they wanna talk about politics is they think that that's what I do for trust me. I don't. Why would I want to do that? I mean, if you're a plumber, and you went out to dinner, would you want to go into the restaurant and unclogged their toilet. That's a very good example is that it. Why do you keep quoting joy? That means you're still watching her. I tell you to stop, and you tune that in every day, you gotta y you whether it how do you know what she just said. Oh, you got like trending and your social media joy Behar. We know he did it. Yeah. She probably does know he did it. That's exactly my point. Everything has got to be viewed with a political spectrum. Everything is a political. I mean, I mentioned Chevy Chase said that Saturday Night Live is terrible. We did. I think hardly any of our show is political you go back at your watch the original Saturday night lives. They had the thing Chevy. Chase played Joe Ford was the president Atta fallen down and they thought they maybe one political skit in there almost all the memorable stuff from the Saturday Night Live when it was funny had nothing to do with politics. Those John Belushi skits that he would do nothing political about them at all Dan ackroyd had the. Was the veggie Matic, but was a fish. Remember that? Julia child betcha Batty commercial, except it was a Fisher baddeck all in all half, Oliver minded characters the Bill Murray. Did I mean every now and they do a political impersonation? But what was political about the cone heads? For the left. He's so everything is now viewed in a political principle. It's just it's all they can talk about. It's all that they can address. It's the way they view everything. They're make it impossible to be a rod most conservatives don't walk around all day talking about Trump. Sexy things in life. Anyway, the point that I was making was there was a time in which they were the funny people. So I got to this red pill say, well, I'm intrigued by the whole notion of the red pilling and where that comes from. And how that happens and the people who have sedative said, the it's usually just go to fire on something for me. And I start questioning getting once I start questioning start questioning everything else. That's how it happened with me. And my that's that's it didn't happen at one week. It happened over ten years. I didn't all of a sudden go from being a liberal to a conservative. It was a gradual transition that occurred. I've told the story a million times that I want to tell it here because within this context of all the liberal hate that we have going on right now. And how you can get people off of it. Liberal. Go through college. I'm a liberal. Starting to work in my professional career and ended up in Saint Joe Benton harbor Michigan. I've told this story a million times, but I'll tell it again. Say Joe is extremely affluent. This is this is the community straight across Lake Michigan from Chicago. Saint Joe's very affluent whirlpool corporation is based in that area. So all the executives from them. They're they're couple of other pretty big companies that are there and a lot of people from Chicago would come across the lake because the land prices were cheaper Burien county, Michigan some of the farmers are very wealthy because it's fruit-growing because of the sandy soil, but I don't think that's correct. But sandy, so they grow a lot of fruit there and pearly absolute. But Michigan it'll made the terrible mistake in the fifties and sixties of having extremely high welfare rates, and they had a lot of people migrate north solely for welfare benefits and to get on unemployment and so on and there was just over racism in the area. I'm a conservative. But I'll tell you that the I saw incredible racism in Burien county who just out and out housing discrimination. A black person could not rent in Saint Joe just wasn't. There were never any. This is back. But back in the day the way that you do your if a place you take out an the newspaper out of the four renting there were never any rentals in the newspaper from Saint Joe because of the red alert newspaper black people would find out that the places for it. All this stuff was reading through word of mouth. So the black people all lived in the city across the river, its twin city Benton harbor. It's awful. Benton harbor was destitute yet a lot of lower income people that were living entirely on welfare. The crime rate was awful, everything was awful Benton harbor going to hell and right across the river. Say Joe is affluent. Well, here I am naive guy from Wisconsin exposed to this. This is this is something. So my original reaction is. This is out in out races right in front of the the reason these people are poor is because of racism people say Joe are just isolating. You talk about your segregation put walls around veteran harbor, the I remember the jokes that were told they make your skin crawl sometime. So I would be prone to take a liberal approach to this except here. I am a news reporter, and I'm trying to break stories at this in my younger days that I was very determined to make a name for myself as you might have guessed. Name the news director of this radio station, which was the dominant station in Tana. They did a lot of news pretty young guy to be doing it. But it's there is only one other station in town in a terrible newspaper. It was just prime for a guy to go in and start digging. In exposing stuff, the end, nobody was importing anything at all there. They never seen a guy like me come in. Well. Extremely successful. Award-winning college journalist. I was pretty sure I knew what I was doing work ethic that I was going to work a hundred hours a week. And I wasn't going to be stuck in Saint Joe Benton harbor for the rest of my life either. I was going to make a name is thunder tried to report some stories, and I started digging into things, and I found that since nobody had ever looked into anything in Benton harbor anymore. Everybody was more than willing to cooperate. Give me dirt. I mean there was weeks in which I break three stories a day. Some the Saint Joe's issues were completely different. Of course. They'd bet and harbors issues. Saint Joe was affluent peaceful at wonderful. The story that I tell the illustrated best is. The same day that. The power company turned off the street lights in Benton harbor, and that was addressed to the Benton harbor city council meeting that they were going to have the power turned off the street lights, the Saint Joseph city council their neighbor right next door. The city council meeting was deciding how much they could expand the yard. So that the harbor so the rich people would have bigger more plays spaces to put their big yachts. So what I did. We we when we did the story. I wrote it that way to say tale of two cities. It was the best of times. It was the worst of time. Apologies the dickens and that I had my reporter from Benton harbor. We're doing cool. Thanks anyway. I get it a baton harbor at. Everybody's leaking things to me. Everybody because Nobody'd ever tried to get anything before. And all they were doing was leaking all the corruption that was going on. And what I came to realize was that Benton harbor had no property tax base at all. Because the property was all worthless. It literally had no value. So the entire budgets existed. Unstated federal aid and Benton harbor got massive aid their budget was bigger than Saint show the rich community next door. Was all federal money and Cher at nonprofit money at state money and so on and they got all this money. But everybody's poor. Where's it all going when I realized there was all going? It was either being stolen by out now corruption or they were inventing jobs to give the money. Theron corrupt charitable organizations, which they take all the money in that provide any services, and I came to realize. Government assistance to help poor people is self destructive. It doesn't make people. Wealthier it makes a poorer and most anti poverty programs exists for the purpose of somebody siphoning the money off the top. The one thing I noticed then and continue to notice today is that. Anti-poverty programs. That are run by churches seem to be an exception. There seems to be a sincerity and faith based programs whether it be the Salvation Army or many others. But anyway. I told the story about how this is how bad I think I told this one just last week or maybe I told us this breads the thanksgiving Turkey giveaway did I just tell the story of the year the anti poverty agency every year gives away thanksgiving turkeys. We got all these turkeys, donate them. They're gonna give them to poor people. So the poor people can have a thanksgiving dinner, the board of the agency wedding grabbed all the turkeys are given to all their friends. Well, I'm as I'm breaking stories like this like crazy. Well, of course, somebody from the agency leaked this to be in tip me off and said, we'd actually distributed turkeys, the board members came in and they took all the turkeys, and they give them to the prince probably sold off the back of a truck somewhere. So that was my red pill moment anti-poverty programs often don't work, but assistant says at work the high welfare that Michigan have actually made people more miserable. Because it kept pop may poverty, a self perpetuating situation. True, I still at conservative observations. There was real racism going on people who were black and why did he get out of bed and harbor. We're not allowed to do so housing discrimination. There was employment discrimination. There was a lot of that stuff. But my eyes were open to the notion that government social welfare programs, doled work. And in fact, make things worse died instantly become a right wing. Right. Everything else. But it did make me question. So if the liberals are wrong about this. Maybe they're Rog about a lot of other things. Time went on. I got to Springfield, Illinois, one of my jobs. There was to write editorials for the station manager did a daily commentary on the radio. He was a conservative. He'd tell me the topic. He wanted to talk about I'm a better writer than he was. I'd write the thing based on his thoughts. So I wasn't writing my thoughts. I'm writing for him because he'd voice the stories. I would just script out the ideas that he had, but it made me think like a conservative because of course, I'm a logical thinker..

"Experience looking at them and realizing that these programs not only didn't make things better they reinforced property that they were great for the people who ran the social service agencies most of whom i found to be a bunch of hustlers and charlatans frauds and they were great for the government officials who ran these social service infrastructures but they didn't fix poverty in fact they seem to make poverty worse now what i came to that conclusion i was still a liberal so liberal and everything else most people don't have an open enough mind that they would have even gotten to that first point of questioning that issue but i saw it and i realized that there had to be a better way for people who actually cared about poor people there had to be a better way than giving them welfare giving them food stamps in other words continuing to give them things that rewarded the failures that were going out of their lives that there had to be a better way of people helping people out on their own but not having government institutionalized poverty view that i worked in michigan which had even higher welfare benefits that wisconsin i saw the magnet effect people come in from mississippi alabama and so on for the higher welfare creating a permanent underclass in some of these cities in michigan now admittedly i happen to be in the city that i was in in michigan at a time in which everything to the city literally fell apart when i was there the almost repossess the squad cars and the utility company turned off the electricity they turned off the street lights that's a pretty extreme said he was going into bankruptcy the eventually got out of it everybody was residing there is corruption all over the place it's benton harbor as avila's the one year that i was there covering it so i was there at a time that that's city was actually bottoming out literally running out of money and everybody was reading each other out about all the stuff that had been stolen is every mistake that you could make public policy starting with the war on poverty in the sixties came to roost of the city of benton harbor and a lot of it had to do with the fact the culture there was fruit growing so they had a lot of migrant workers who came up from the south not immigrants but black people who came up from the south and realize that when winter came around that can go.
