"I got your attention now Good I was adding a little something to this month's sales contest As you all know first prize is a Cadillac El Dorado Anybody want to see second prize Second prize is set of steak knives Third prize is you're fired You get the picture Right Now how does your dad relate to that story Well my father when he became this sort of very famous negotiator he worked on the start talks he worked for the Reagan administration and David Mamet was in Chicago and he was working on glengarry Glen Ross He knew about my father and he sent him the play early version of the play sort of for what I call a very similar to read you know does this sound right And my father loved it My mother hated it because of all the cursing My brother loved it My sister hated it because of all the cursing And my father had won suggestion which is I don't remember what the original prize was but it wasn't steak knives Because my father used to tell the story he started and learned came out of Brooklyn then at night he worked for Allstate insurance which is how he ended up eventually in Chicago as a claims adjuster And he talked about a claims adjuster contest in the early 60s where the first price in that case I think with steak knives in the second prices you don't get fired You know so he said change it to steak knives So that's sort of like a little like my father is kind of like a zelig like figure in that he enters all these other people's lives and you see little evidence of him everywhere But it's the story of sort of his coming of age He didn't go to business school to be some sort of business savvy guru about how to negotiate things Where did he get that talent It's some of it's just born in his personality grew up in bensonhurst Brooklyn grew up in neighborhood that he used to neighborhood in bensonhurst used to say was 49% Jewish 50% Italian 1% other And he was involved in all these different relationships and he would tell you that where he first learned to negotiate and realize he had a skill was when he was a kid Another kid took a dog hostage and said he wasn't going to release the dog unless the owners the owner of the dog It's very pretty girl went to a dance with him And my father became involved in getting this and that's where he learned hostage negotiation He grew up with Larry King and Sandy Koufax and all these guys And he was constantly getting them into a lot of trouble in school and Larry said getting him in just so he could get him out So it was sort of dealing with he's always the thing about dealing with authority and his other big expression which is power is based upon perception Even if you got it even if you don't got it you got it if you think you got it Basically if you think you have it you have it even if you don't have it That's it So that was always his thing about dealing with people more powerful than him That's how he got into stage with Al Gore right It can be at the DNC He just says hey we'll go up and talk to Al Gore And then he I think I'm recollecting the anecdote correctly He just kind of came up to some Secret Service guys or some people work on the door and he said how's things going And he talked like he knew what was going on and then said okay good job and then he just walked straight ahead into the scene Right well his thing was Larry said you can't get in because there's so much security before the democratic convention My father said okay I'll see you there And he went up and he just shows up on stage and I heard from another reporter who saw it he just walked up with a notebook and started asking the head of security questions about and the guy just thought he was his boss But your dad's maybe greatest story I don't know You be the judge but one of the most famous stories is the story Larry King told in his book first and you relate and it's the same story And when I read it in Larry King's book I thought this can't be true And even if it's not I don't care it's such a good story but the mapo story right Right Talk about negotiating with an authority We could spend 15 minutes telling the story Can you give us the abridged version of it But take your time because this is amazing Well I should say that before the story was in Larry's book Larry used to tell it on the radio And I was on from central time ten to four in the morning And when I was a kid I would hear Larry telling stories about my father on the radio and it was amazing And my father told the same story in the same voices So they had these they were in a gang Larry and my father called the warriors street club And they had guys in it like named hoo ha he was called hoo ha because late one night somebody asked him a question He said who And the repeated he said huh Wasn't like the smartest guy Inky bucko chepo and Larry was called Zeke the creek the mouthpiece because he wanted to be on the radio And my dad claims he was called handsome because he was so good-looking That's what he's saying So the story was they had a friend named mapo and one day they went to school first day of 9th grade which was junior high in New York then to pick him up for school in mapo wasn't there as House was closed and his cousin was there to mapo has tuberculosis They called a mapo because his hair was like a mop His real name was Gil mermelstein And he was going to go to the school and get his school records transferred to his new school or tutor in Arizona where he was getting treatment And my dad said you don't have to do that We'll do it for you This is your dad volunteering to do that Yeah at age 14 And the walking in my dad Larry and this game named brazi Abadi So you guys you know I got a great way to make 20 bucks and we go to Coney Island and have a great time And they said what he said we won't get we won't tell him mop was got tuberculosis Well tell him mapo died And then we will raise money for his funeral wreath And they went into school and they did that And they raised a lot of money for his funeral wreath They went to the principal the teacher's classrooms and said mapo died in they collected money From they went to mapo their extent of research of the school principal was to call mapos house find out the number was disconnected realized oh yeah he must have died right deceased on his card And they collected the money they went to every classroom collecting money and then they forgot all about it Larry's whole thing is won't we get in trouble my dad's like by the time mapo gets back we're gonna be in high school We're out of this guy's jurisdiction He won't be able to do anything to him They're in 8th grade in this They're in 9th grade then they're a junior high went through 9th grade So they went through their year and then in the spring as they get a call to the principal's office And.

And I'm a Martinez in Colbert city California In two different parts of the country two Amazon union elections hang in the balance On Staten Island in New York workers have been voting on a unionizing effort that was started by a former employee who was fired two years ago Another election in bessemer Alabama is a do over after complaints about company practices during the first vote For more on all this we're joined by NPR's Andrew Shue and lots of drama lots of suspense here Catches up on where we are with the count Well yeah let's start in bessemer Alabama They finished counting the votes yesterday and the no votes finished ahead but it was close And there are more than 400 challenge ballots These may be ballots from workers whose eligibility is being questioned by one side or the other So there's going to be a hearing to determine if any of those can be counted but we may not get a final result for weeks Now on Staten Island the counting is going to resume this morning and as of last night the yes votes had a pretty sizable lead but there are still quite a lot of ballots left to count Okay so it looks like maybe Staten Island might actually vote to unionize How big of a deal would that be A huge deal No Amazon facility in the U.S. is unionized And what's especially notable is that unlike the Alabama campaign which as we mentioned is backed by the national union the one in Staten Island is truly a grassroots operation They call themselves the Amazon labor union And its leader is this guy Christian smalls He's in his early 30s He was working at the Staten Island warehouse when COVID hit and just around this time two years ago he organized a walkout over a safety concern some workers had caught the virus And he was fired That same day now Amazon said he had violated COVID safety protocols He had been asked to quarantine because of an exposure to COVID but he showed up for the walkout So then he launched this upstart union drive which he financed through GoFundMe and he got his some of his former coworkers on board And they're thinking was that as insiders with access to the workers they might have better success than an outside group What are the organizers asking for They're looking for a whole range of things like longer lunch breaks and better healthcare plans and higher wages on Staten Island at the Amazon facilities the pay starts at 1825 an hour but this is New York It's an expensive place to live And Chris smalls has said that a lot of workers take on second jobs to earn enough for themselves and their families and some even rely on public assistance And Amazon isn't the only place seeking unit activity right now Yeah you know this has been bubbling up in a lot of different places And one place that we're watching closely is Starbucks There's been a wave of organizing at Starbucks locations And the elections have taken place so far have been tiny compared to the Amazon ones because they're store by store but the campaign is really taking off fast 9 stores have voted to unionize so far and these are stores in Buffalo New York Knoxville Tennessee mesa Arizona and Seattle so they're all over the country And more than a 180 stores have filed petitions for union elections with more almost every day And what I'm hearing from workers is they want more money They want more respect from the companies that they helped make profitable through the pandemic meanwhile companies like Amazon and Starbucks are pointing to the raises that they've given workers recently and the great benefits they offer at Amazon health insurance is offered on day one to new full-time employees and both of those companies offer education benefits tuition reimbursement So they're saying we've done all of this without unions and we don't need them now NPR's Andrew Shue thanks a lot.

When we say stolen over Brooklyn. I think that storm, you know, just living divided enough having ah, ideas in my mind about what other people are like, and what they are when they come into our neighbourhood that plays into what happens to people. Yeah, There's a great map. You use showing and Amir you showing where you guys used to ride your bikes. And used to ride all over but not certain neighborhoods. Where did how did you just ride your bike? Amir? Well in any New York You know, because you know, we pretty much we grew up there. So you know, we know house We know how far Weekend. I want to tell you my take on what the Democrats have been doing it ever since this president was inaugurated. they have been obstructing justice then they tried the molar report that failed everybody made throw at this president fails and this just because of in my opinion they're trying to protect their own they note that they are guilty of the very thing that they accuse others of being guilty and that seems to be a part of their day games. okay so I think the people of America need to pay attention and see that they are trying to cover up what they have done so every time you look around they've got another investigation and when you're going to legislate stop investigate you know I mean they they were sent there to work on behalf of the American people. he's not before second answer for me what do you think the Democrats are doing so what are the accusing Republicans or water the accusing trump of if they're actually doing what's what's on your list. well my list is is just one item they are in a very with the elections had an affair with the lectins and I've always said that the Democrats have perfected the art of accusing others of the very thing that they're guilty. so it's a and that's about everything they say about the president they need to know that they are the go to calls so they know little hypocritical projection if you will Tyrone thanks for the call appreciate it let's go to White Plains New York hello Russell euron Schmidt welcome Hey I think the Peter police have an APB on you because you live the salami not the part B. remember that day I'm sorry that's okay Hey do you also remember earlier this year when Jerry in the Bronco wanted Nikki Haley to replace and vice president remember they believe me I mean sounds familiar I mean I like Nikki Haley I think Nikki Haley has a very bright future in Republican politics for years she got out when they get moved good and but that's when in earlier this year round may April is when pants went all in as Tom's bad man in Ukraine and you know that that's what would be great if trump should replace parents with Nikki Haley want want to know if you think that be a good idea because the be a clean break like Jerry Ford during Watergate. listen I like Nikki Haley I think Nikki Haley like I said as a very bright future I just don't see. replacing hands on the ticket with Nikki helicity anything's possible truck truck could essentially pull anything out of his pocket pull anything from his sleeve and he's throwing us curveballs and duties in the past no one thought that he was gonna release the memorandum of the phone call and I don't think that really helped him I think that the release of the phone call her tribe more but again you have no clue on what he's going to do so you never say never Cody yes do I think he will no all I think I'll stick with pants but certainly Nikki Haley I think is a is a great. potential candidate down the road Russell thanks was granted angel as we go to stay in New York from White Plains New York will go to Bensonhurst Angelo euron Schmidt high. yeah hi a deal and I think a lot of people get annoyed by everybody calling trump. he's president trump I'm a former marine Vietnam veteran and I'm tired of it I work for marriage trump Donald's mother and she was the sweetest person she was affiliated with you may god at all and I'm tired of the Democrats I used to be a Democrat because in New York you have to be a Democrat if you're not a Democrat anything you put in it will not will be denied in your home now I'm wrong all in all it is all. Hey hold on the phone before before we get too far away I want to know more about Mary trump so you worked at Jamaica hospital. what is going in the right one a nursing home rehabilitation home donated by parade and Mary trump god shall not not many people know that you make a hospital with donated by ms the macys Mister curry missed a gamble now I came from Marriott hotels and I did a spectacular luncheon aren't poor trumpet billion and she grabbed me by the arm and said young man thank you very much for the beautiful day now but I want to eat what the residents are eating. to me what the parents tell me is the way they bring up their kid now you wanted to Jamaica hundredth anniversary Jamaica hospital hundredth anniversary in honor of marriage from and at that time Donald Trump came to Emory fable five hundred dollars a plate which was bought by my corporation marrying and he came and he was so sweet everybody. and I'm just in hi I used to be a Democrat I used to be a Republican I am absolutely of conservative isn't my first time on newsmax first time I am now in South Carolina and there is no doubt about it dad all Republicans will win in South Carolina. I'm I'm just sick and tired of the Democrats saying that they're talking for the American people I saw an A. I. Angelo elastic so you're from Bensonhurst but now you're in South Carolina. yes I am thank you well that's a lot click anyway I how long ago was the meeting with trump and merry trump and Donald Trump but that the trump pavilion at Jamaica hospital how long ago was that it was a boy wanted directors meeting and I I know I just got out of the merry at hotels. about one ninety nine scene eighty eighty five now. okay and maybe she grabbed me by the arm is a young man thank you very much for the lovely dinner and everything but I want to eat with the residential eating next times pretty call Angela thanks for the call you know I I visited my grandfather my my mom's dad Fred. he had a heart attack and I visited him as a little boy I must've been I don't know seven or eight years old. maybe six and I remember visiting him at Jamaica hospital because they lived in Hollis queens and use the Jamaica house back in the old days I mean when the the hospital the the for the the hallways the rooms it was old school and looked nothing like at what you see in the hospital today I remember I think kids won't even allow they stuck me up the stairwell to see my grandfather was a Jamaica hospital of which Angela just spoke of let's grab Chuck in Pennsylvania in Bushkill PA hello Chuck euron Schmidt. but you're doing a great job and I gotta tell you yeah if the guy says to you every time you see him is still beating your wife at what point when you know what's so you don't even have a wife. you take up a cudgel in hand in smite him this is like the three Stooges meets the portions how many times are these Democrats gonna roll out false accusations and by the way if trump or any of his minions were caught on tape talking about has a strong arms the Ukrainian prosecutor and got him fired and if trump Sean had walked away from with the fifty thousand a month type in from Ukraine and a billion five from the chai com's but with this media be saying. a couple of things couple things up first of all on what you said regarding the Democrats to make this stuff up I I assume that you're talking about the whistle blower complaint is that what you're getting at what kind of a how about the most one of the least let me stick with one so I know that that's what you're referring to listen you gotta let this play out the fact is is that the whistle blower we don't know all the details we don't know exactly who it is where you know we heard that was all secondhand a third hand where in fact the the inspector general of the D. N. either they have confirmed that some of the information was first hand the fact is and you know you you can't let let politics completely blind you here the fact is is that trump's only acting the NRA. trump's own inspector general for the intelligence committee community of which he appointed. they all said they agree that the the whistle blower complaint was valid and it was of an urgent concern so I you just can't dismiss it you can't just take a a broad brush and say I know this is just a political smear job there's plenty that goes on the politics on both sides are toxic but you just can't discount and throw away the whistle blower and I don't know how you also throw aside the delight and the inspector general for the intelligence community I don't know the fact is they they think there's something here. hello can I speak yeah go ahead okay thank you do you remember the book about JFK ke's wife profiles in courage yeah course. the subtitle. I do not regret was I don't recall the sometime I'm here with you the past is prologue. so if you know the past you'll know what they're going to do in the future well I don't need to go down every Democrat Adam Schiff wish why in rabbit hole these are wider their religion is been bit mendacity okay let's listen listen I'm not I'm not I'm not disputing that was in there there are plenty of vision. I'm not. hold on a truck there are plenty of issues with the Democrats in the politics that the drive me absolutely nuts but also you're you're calling the Democrats liars also you think trump tells the truth all the time truck but it is it doesn't tell the truth all the time I think it went well H. trump because because of that very fact he tells the truth than they can handle it. chocolate and I'm a I'm a conservative Republican and I I I I can't sit here and tell you the trump tells the truth all the time trump is live. right. there are there are there are many many truck I don't have enough time here the fact is about Ted Cruz's father part of the the the JFK assassination you brought of JFK how about that come on trust he called the whole birther thing you know trump was one of the original birthers pushing that only five years I mean the fact is truck come on all these politicians argue one side of the aisle you're on yeah do I agree with trump and his policies of course I do well want to see the ball gives the tutor of course I do do I want to see trump impeached of course I do not want to see Democrats will of course I do not but the fact is truck I'm I'm sorry I'm I'm not good at it you got you got the wrong radio guy if you want me just to be a checklist Charlie over here and I'm just gonna go oh yeah I got to say this this this and this is what I gotta agree with everything the trump I can't do it I'm gonna give you my read on any particular issue and I can't have you on the show saying that only the Democrats light they do.
