And then like you said Marin Cilic, you know, semifinalists at the French this year sort of out of nowhere. So former champion as well here, not forgetting. Back in what 2014 that was. So yeah, possibly some interesting players that could throw a spanner in the works. Jenson brooksby also down bottom section possible dark horse to throw in an upset, although he would face courage, yeah, second round. Let's take a look last but not least at the fourth quarter. My favorite quarter. Here we go. We've got certain Rafael Nadal back in action. He's the second seed. He's going for his 5th U.S. open title. And actually, draw wise, not too horrendous on paper. Once again. It's great draw. Open against the wild card rinky hijikata. It could have corrected second round. Both of whom are not quite where they used to be. But cam norrie at the top of the draw 7th seed really intrigued to see if he can keep up his solid form from this whole season. Wimbledon semifinalist can he make it to you so he's a slam in a row. And then Andre Ripley, of course, allowed to play a Grand Slam again and back in the draw. Joel initial thoughts on the fourth quarter to start with? I think Nadal got really great joy to be honest. I think he can, you know, I think obviously he wouldn't have got as much time on court in Cincinnati as he would have liked, but I think this draw enables him to feel his way into the tournament. I don't see too many dangerous dangerous players around him. Yes, there is four Nene or cats have potentially in round two. But they've not really been playing at the level that they've been at a few years ago. I think for four newly, for example, is in the twilight of his career. I think he's doing better on the doubles court than on this. On the singles court. So yeah, I think the Dow's got a good draw. Yeah, tiafoe might be an interesting one. I think that could be really fun, evening match, but I still think Nadal, yeah, it's got kind of a strong shot coming through. And yeah, could face, I wouldn't be surprised if it could be a Nadal norrie quarterfinal. I feel like nori always runs into Nadal at grand slabs and feces. It was like more like in round two round three and now because of his rank kick, it's more like four of the quarterfinals. But yeah, I think he's also got a good shot at going deep. Certainly into week two. Yes, he has Benoit pair in the first round and you just don't know what sort of what sort of tennis you're going to see on the tennis court from Benoit paire. But looking beyond that though guru, I think, could be tricky. John Isner as well is their unseated, which feels very, very nasty and difficult. So yeah, there's a few challenges along the way, but I think, yeah, the way cam's been playing. Well, again, how we handled himself in Cincinnati. I think he's, again, got a very good shot and I would not be surprised for me if he's the last Brit standing, and he lives up to his seeding, I think, in New York. I can see that as well. I think I'm too quick to discount norrie because I think obviously he's shown, so consistently how well he can play and how well he can get the results and players like when he beat Carlos, I thought that Carlos would very much have the measure of him as he had done previously, but you know, he pulled out the win there. So I think that he will do really well here. Having said that, I'm now thinking, I think I may be predicted, isn't it to come through this part of the draw? But I'm sure I can change that, but I think that would be a tough one. I think almost if you, if you take the game away from norrie, so if isna serving particularly well, then potentially he can't, we've sort of his web of, you know, the flat backhand a bit more tops with the forehand and make players lose their rhythm if you're not so reliant on rhythm like John Isner and the way that he plays is almost to hit kind of as few ground strokes as possible. I also think that Nadal, this is a really good draw for him. I think I will never count Nadal out. We've proved us time and time again that no matter what form he has going into something, no matter what injury, no matter what is going on, you can not discount him. So I've got Nadal having a really good run here. I think it would be good to see. And he just hit some tweeners with English film tech oh, if you can beat John, if you could beat John rap McEnroe, I think you can win the U.S. open. Exactly. We're in trouble now. Yeah, exactly. What about you, Kim? Yeah, I agree, I think Rafa has got an on paper, decent drawer. I just, you know, always have a question marks, or will there be an injury or something popping up, you know, like a Wimbledon, very unfortunate there. But Jack sock is beating Diego Schwartzman. Oh, definitely. Yeah, I could see that. That could be a long 5 setter, though. Do you not think? Not with Jack socks fitness, I don't know. But I think Jax, I think shorts are a bit on for me on upset alert there. And I also think Denis Shapovalov against Marc Andrea husler, who Draper. Yes, exactly. He's having a very good run in Winston Salem. Another player who I think has just shot up the rankings this season has been a little bit under the radar to me. I've not really known much about him. I saw that match up against Draper on paper and I just thought, oh, Draper will come through that.

"Or difficult situations if she did decide to go back to Russia and play or visit friends and family. I don't think anything's come out directly in terms of repercussions yet, but obviously she's probably got family and friends still living there. So I mean, she's obviously decided to kind of come out and say this is more important to her than living a lie or hiding who she truly is and she said she couldn't live in her skin anymore. Without coming out. So I think yeah, really bold brave brave move and we just hope that, you know, this doesn't negatively impact her in any way because unfortunately we know we don't know firsthand, but it's a very difficult thing, someone from Russia to do and to say, but she knows she's got a public platform, so obviously the positive repercussions inspiring others and just getting out there is hopefully going to be more worth it and I think that's where she was coming from. So we wish her all the best and yeah it's obviously the situation with the war. Even without that, it would be obviously a bold move but with that it just kind of adds another level, doesn't it? So yeah, really, really brave of Kazakh keener. I mean, we've got some other talking points from the week Joel as well without wanting to kind of move on from a very serious topic, but we do have some other, I guess, more direct tennis related news as well. First of all, is that Naomi Osaka split from her coach, women for set. They've decided to part ways. They've been together for a couple of seasons. She's won two slams under his under his remit, but yeah, decided to go there. They're separate ways. I think it doesn't seem a surprise. And I'm just curious to see who will snap him up next because he's obviously a top top coach and there's probably plenty of players out there who would love to start working with him. Yeah, emirati. Old margherita, I don't know. Yeah, I think this is very interesting because I think the set is a very proven coach. And I wonder if he just got a little bit frustrated with maybe the lack of maybe the lack of time that the soccer has been spending on the tour. I get that she's been injured, she had an Achilles injury. She didn't play Wimbledon. I think the first round of French Open as well in May. So I wonder if there was a little bit frustration in terms of her, you know, it may be in his views being like a part time player on the tour sort of picking and choosing a tournament to play and he maybe felt like he needed a full-time player that he could that would be an enjoy full challenge to him and maybe they felt that he just had run its course. They have had great memories together, always remember that U.S. open triumph that they've had and yeah it feels to me like they've now got kind of different priorities and for facet. I think he'll be looking and ideally would want to play a who is going to listen, learn and again, maybe someone like an ever adequate who just wants to get his insight all his kind of top top level knowledge what it takes to coach Grand Slam champion and bring it into their bring it into their into their coaching setup and for me I sort of said Emma RADA khanu but I do think it would be great for someone like that to bring for set on versus muguruza who's already been there as a Grand Slam champion. I certainly think the biggest potential if I was like an up and coming player I think was yeah would be to snap, snap up someone like a facet who yeah has that experience to go with him. Yeah, for sure. I think that would be a good move. And yeah, I don't think it's a surprising news, as I said, but we'll see what Osaka does. I think she's coming back to the San Jose event in a couple of weeks. So spin out since rodan Garros been a while. So be curious to see if she can get her. Her hardcore mojo back quickly. Do you think she could go coachless? Why not? I mean, I honestly wouldn't surprise me if she won the U.S. open. She's won it twice before and she's been out for a while. She could be she could come back with an absolute blast, didn't she? I mean, or she could not. I wouldn't surprise me either way. She's too good a player to not be able to reach that level again, isn't she? So we'll see. We'll see. Let's look slightly more short term, Joel. The next week ahead, we've got a couple of tournaments talking of the U.S. open swing. We've got the Atlanta event, two 50 for the ATP side of things. This draw, I think, is absolutely. It's going to be one by an Australian or an American as well. Yeah, I think 20 out of the 24 players in the draw are either Australian or American, so there we go. There's a few others, I think there's a Quentin House of France, Ilya ivashka, who is technically playing as a neutral but is Belarusian scene whoo corner of Korea. And Benoit paire is the other non U.S. or Aussie, but there we go. Kiryu is playing. He's also playing the doubles here with, I think, cocking akis. So that'll be exciting. And I think you've just put on the notes here, Isner has won this loads of time. Yeah. So expect him to potentially win it again. It's John is to lose. No, yeah, I'm curious to see how kyros gets on. Nakashima is welcome. I know you're excited about that. We've got Jack sock there on a wild card, Jack sock did pretty well at a thought at Wimbledon. Quite tough opener against Tommy Paul. But yeah, I think that would be quite an interesting one to watch. Interestingly, curios cocking accus and Alex de menor are in this like quite packed like Aussie quarter in the top half of the draw. So be interested to see who comes out of that triage is also James Duckworth in there. So yeah, it would be interesting to see nice to see also curios and cocking nakas back. Yeah. Yeah, I think it's great opportunity. I mean, I tried to put to him that is this the biggest match of your career so far in that you've never reached one. He wasn't really getting with that. Will you always, when he's reached third rounds, he's always running to. Nadal in Australia and Nadal here, I think, and then Federer at Wimbledon. Yeah. I wish him well that would be a massive win. And a few weeks time wouldn't know or care about how many ranking points of play gets for winning a third round match. But I guarantee they will remember who wins Wimbledon. And Andy Murray responded. Absolutely the plays do. I don't dispute that. I'd rather play for points, however it's not the be all and end all. Do you think the top goal for golfers would still play the masters if there was no points would meet up Pereira rather have won the PGA Championship and had no point or finished third and got however many ranking points he got. I could be wrong, but I don't think any tennis player is serving for Islam title and he footballer taking a penalty in a World Cup shooter or any golfer ting off on the 18th hole of a major was thinking about ranking points. What's making them nervous in my opinion is the possibility of winning an historic slash prestigious event in the sport they love, and have trained most of their life for, not the thought of the ranking points. Oh, that's an interesting match. It is, particularly as mukha beat Maria thackeray today in I've just done a double take on this because my notes say two grueling sets. But in my head, it was an epic three setter. It was as epic a straight sets match can possibly be. Yeah, it was. It was the match of the day, really, until alcaraz did his thing. It really gripped me for those two and a half hours. It was such a contrast in a saccharine attacks every ball with all her might and is very tight on the court and much of a sort of caresses the ball, and sometimes you think, oh, go for it a bit more. Be a bit be a bit more tight on the court. I want a bit more from milk. It's a bit fangirl. She's almost too relaxed sometimes. And yet it just made this wonderful contrast, then honestly, I don't see much of it was the better player throughout. I really felt like Zachary was hanging on and the reasons she made the sets close is that she plays so well when she's behind in the score because she loosens up and she kept mounting these sort of mini comebacks to take them take both sets into tiebreaks. But there is a very talented player and she has all the variety that I don't think Zachary particularly enjoys sly she can come to the net you can hit the ball with spins, you can play with angles and that is not something which enjoys coming up against. And I think doesn't she saccharine. She does because your back herself in those and I would back her in most of those as well, but muca var is kind of perplexing player. I think largely because she's so often injured, you know, we don't really we don't really know how good she could be because she does something like this and then poof, she's kind of gone again in a few weeks and she never seems to build on anything. There's never any momentum, but she's always capable of producing a result like this. Yeah, two hours 28 minutes that much. And it was taking place at the same time. As Alexander zverev sort of slow lolloping fight back against Sebastian Baez and the sort of the contrasted the rhythms of three tennis versus 5 set tennis were incredibly stark to me in that moment. "Anyway, Benoit paire also a post lost loose cannon. He lost ilio of ashke today. He told the French press, I will go to Wimbledon to pick up a check and play an exhibition. Apparently he asked to come into press. He wasn't requested. Yes, to come in. You said that he could say that. I understand. Wow. In the tweet it wanted an audience. Yep. I don't know. Had some time to kill before the Jo Wilfried tsonga ceremony. What else happened today? Andre Rublev, rather led himself down, didn't he in his full set win over sinu Quan, he lost the opening set and almost got himself defaulted quite frankly. Almost by a whisker indirectly struck a line judge in the head when smashing a ball into the umpire's chair. And then proceeded to do some smashing of racket into the ground when he went to sit down. Look, we said this performance tennis has a problem. A hundred Rublev is a good egg. Yeah, but he's one of the worst examples right now. He's just been lucky, frankly, that he hasn't hurt somebody or hit somebody. And if you think what he's done a couple of times, there's been not much different, for instance, to what Novak Djokovic did at the U.S. open. Djokovic happened to strike somebody. And then if the thing is, if he has something like that happen, and he ends up on a probation or something like some of the others have had, is he going to be able to control himself? He doesn't look like he can. He doesn't look like he can control himself. And I think he needs to properly attend to that because it's I can't watch him happily anymore. He got a warning though, okay, violation and nothing more. I mean, the ATP they've stitched themselves up with the punishment that they dished out to Alexander zverev for his behavior in Acapulco. Haven't they? They've set the bar so high. For what gets even a sort of fairly mild punishment. Anything falling below that bar can only get a lesser punishment. He said to his credit impress afterwards, obviously he doesn't make up for it entirely, but at least, he said, I lost my mind for a moment and I regret what I did. This is unprofessional from my side and hopefully I will never do it again. You keep saying that though. When show us then. Maybe you will. Hopefully well. "And yeah, the ranking, the prize money might be high enough for me to not really care about the ranking points, but obviously ranking points are a big motivation to a lot of players and for Naomi Osaka. At this moment, she's not particularly sure if she's going to play. Yeah, she said it's going to feel like an exhibition. Because although she knows it's more than an exhibition, it's prestigious torments a Grand Slam. There is obviously large amount of surprise money, the prestige, but she kind of fills it in her in her head, I suppose, she said it will feel a bit exhibitionary and therefore she doesn't feel like she can give a 100%. So she's leaning towards not playing it and perhaps other players will also feel the same way. I mean, it personally if I was a player, I would still go because you've got the potential to earn a lot of prize money, which obviously, depending on where you are in the world, you know, that could obviously a significant amount for many, many players. And you've obviously got the prestige, but yeah, someone like folks, who is going to drop out of the top hundred, that's totally not fair, and that's going to put him at risk of not getting into certain tournaments. He might not then get into the U.S. open. That can really affect the rest of someone's season and their career. And he has nothing to do with either of these decisions that have been made, like the first one by Wimbledon to deny Russian and Belarusian players to play. And then this kind of retaliation by the ATP and WTA to kind of punish Wimbledon for making that initial decision. It does feel like players are like they're kind of being caught up as pawns in this game. And I understand why the ATP and WTA have decided to strip the points because they need to make a statement that the fact that it's not right to deny players the opportunity to play based on based on their nationality and the actions of their government, which has nothing to do with themselves as people. But I don't know, is this the, is this the right? I think they wanted to send out a strong message to stop other tournaments making similar decisions to Wimbledon. So I guess they've certainly done that, but I don't know if they fully considered all the ramifications or they were just like, oh, we're going to do it anyway. And players will just have to deal with it. I'm not sure. Yeah, it was interesting also to hear kind of rapper talk about the fact that and other sort of getting to this conclusion was I feel in a weird way both organizations are right and what they're doing is correct. But yeah, it's having a big impact on the players. And as a result, who knows what the drawers are going to look like, it could absolutely affect the integrity of the competition if players like Naomi Osaka are like, well, actually, ranking points are big motivation for me. I'm not going to, I'm not going to play if there aren't any. If there are other players that follow suit, the integrity could be completely weakened, I think, from a tournament and a sort of a competition kind of standpoint. But at the moment, it doesn't feel like there's many winners in this in this scenario. And some of the big losers are players who defending a lot of ranking points and they will be annoyed because they've not had the opportunity or they will not get the opportunity to defend them. And I think that's the thing that annoys people the most like future bitch. It's like I've not able to go on a court and like I normally do with ranking points. I accrue throughout the year. And I can't go on a call and do my best to defend them. It feels like I've been powerless in this situation and yeah, again, players not particularly happy. I think about how little control I think they have on this moment. And it was interesting also to, I think, here, Benoit paire talk about Benoit pelvis, he says a lot of crazy things, but I actually again sort of agree with him when he was talking about this decision is based on Russian and Belarusian players, but it feels like everyone is being everyone is being everyone is being affected and again. For some of these players, it's like, I've got nothing to do with this. I don't want anything to do with this, but there have been dragged into the story because of the decisions by Wimbledon and by the ATP and WTA. Yeah, and I think it just makes a mockery again of the organization within tennis and the structure of everything, how you've got all these sort of competing decision making bodies, and they don't seem to talk to each other much, and they kind of make unilateral decisions like Wimbledon did without really consulting anyone. And then you get this kind of backlash and you get all these problems further down the line and I think this tournament is going to be remembered as the one that a lot of players weren't at. Either because they were banned or because they just boycotted it or they thought, well, you know, maybe I just won't bother playing because what's the point? Do you think the fans will care? Because again, I think Wimbledon's kind of interesting in the sense a lot of people go for it for a day out. A social occasion and there are obviously there are people there. You and me who are there for quality competition. But there are other people there. I just want to go and have pims and have strawberries and cream, et cetera. And again, I'm interested. I feel like those sorts of fans, again, they might see this decision. They might not even be aware of this decision, but if they did, they probably not maybe going to care as much about it as, say, you know, if it happened at another grandson, because this sort of segment exists, I think, at Wimbledon, and they're just here for a great day out. It doesn't feel like it affects their particular kind of they're watching experience as much as maybe if this sort of situation arose at the Australian open or the U.S. open. Yeah, I mean, hey, Joel, you can do both. You can watch quality tennis and enjoy some pym. Just so you know very, very true. I intend to do both. Yeah, like I think it won't affect much on the ground, like Wimbledon is so popular, there's going to be thousands of people still going, I don't think it's going to make a difference in terms. You'll still be in the queue. Yeah, I will still be in the queue touchwood, and I don't think it's going to affect numbers going through the gates. Let's just say that much. But you know, certain people might miss or lament the fact that certain players aren't there. I'm sure there'll be a lot of chat around the grounds when people realize so and so and that's going to mean. And I do think like you said earlier, the irony is that Daniel Medvedev will probably become world number one again. And I'm sure Vladimir Putin will love that. So Wimbledon they're going to be like, oh, we didn't really think about it. I mean, obviously Wimbledon weren't to know that the ATP would then make this decision. But I guess their decision make everything has a consequence and I do feel like they kind of decided this slightly irrationally. I understand everyone's motivations from all sides, but at the end of the day, I think I said this when we discussed it before. I don't think it's right to deny players the opportunity to play just based on where they were born, essentially. And I think it can set a dangerous precedent going forward. So it needs to be set in stone that you can't do this. And I guess that's why ATP and WTA have come out also with a strong response. But Kim, let's look at the upside here because there is an opportunity here for, I don't know, let's say the passing shot come in, let's get our own ranking point event in the two weeks of Wimbledon. I want ATP WTA croydon, I want another event in London..

"Kim today is the 24th of May, and we are here to catch up on round one at the French Open at passing shot headquarters. It's been a lovely, last few days at Roland Garros. I love the Sunday start. I was a little bit hungover, so it was just great to just stroll downstairs, lie on my sofa and just watch some watch some Grand Slam tennis and it's been a great start. We've been had some we've had some shocks, particularly in the women's side. It's great to see rapha back as well. And of course Kim, we've got Hugo Gaston delighting the local crowd after the bittersweet ceremony of Jo Wilfried tsonga against Casper Ruud, his final match. Now firmly in retirement, but he did give it a good go, didn't he? He did. But I mean, aside from songa, losing, and obviously saying goodbye, we've been a pretty good day for French players, which we will get on to later. But yeah, I'm pleased Gaston was able to come through that. He lost like 9 games on the trot in this match with Alex de menor and saw him break his racket into and I was thinking oh dear, but yeah, he came through entertaining the locals again. I'll always remember him in 2020 when he I think beat Stan and then came close with Dominic team. So yeah, always always up for a bit of Hugo Gaston we also got the, I feel like what is courtesy now Benoit paire 24 double faults in his match against Ilya ivashka. I really enjoyed that he did that and then as soon as that happened and he lost he was back out to chatrier to wish his friend tsonga along with lots of other kind of glittering kind of French players Gasquet was there. You'll see one was there as well who was also retiring so it was a real kind of emotional moment which we will get onto. There has also been big developments outside of the French Open that we need to catch up on first Kim. We are going to get obviously to your collector set and predictions as well. But we've got to start with Wimbledon ranking points. They're not going to be there and that's going to be on the ATP and WTA tours. They've both decided to strip ranking points from Wimbledon this year and it's been quite fascinating to see what the reactions are of various players on social media after their matches as well. I feel like some of these round one matches were very, very quick, 40 minutes for maybe for women's matches or straight three sets, regulation job for the men and it was actually more like, okay, well are they going to say their press conference about ranking points and the fact that there's not going to be any at Wimbledon? Yeah, we haven't had too much controversy from the French Open so far. So it certainly Wimbledon is filling that gap nicely. Unfortunately, yeah, I think we were wondering if this would actually be a decision that would be taken, but it has been and yeah, no one is going to be allowed to gain any ranking points from Wimbledon this year on the ATP or WTA side. And it's also going to be the case that ranking points from 2021 will drop off. So it's not even like they're freezing the points. They're going to lose everything that they had. So Novak Djokovic is despite the fact he's probably going to win it again. He will lose 2000 points. Yeah, so he's really been affected quite a lot. I think it's almost probably like very likely he will lose the number one ranking already. So it does make a mockery, I think, of the ranking system when it changes something like whose world number one and the weeks someone might be reigning for when through no fault of their own in this case, they are just losing points. I mean, I understand why the ATP and WTA have done it, but I think they should probably have maybe frozen the points rather than letting them drop off. I mean, especially Kim, because if that does happen, if this does happen and Novak Djokovic, as you said, would lose the world number one ranking. He could lose it to a Russian. He could lose it to Daniel later. A bit Mickey Mouse, a bit of a circus, you know, I think we've kind of sort of expected it over the years. We've seen these sorts of things kind of play out and I think, again, kind of fundamentally Wimbledon and the tours have very different kind of stances on the war at the moment between Russia and Ukraine and it felt like in the ATP and WTA. They sort of, I think, conceded on the tour events in the UK because there will be ranking points there, but they just felt at the Grand Slam at Wimbledon. It was a complete non starter and it's interesting to see it feels like the players are almost this kind of collateral in the middle and that's where I think you're seeing lots of frustration. I was actually surprised a little bit that Novak Djokovic wasn't kind of a little bit more angry about how many points he's going to defend because we've seen other players a little bit less reserved, for example, martan future which he got to the quarterfinals last year. And he is a very good player, but because he's losing ranking points, he's going to be outside the top hundred, which doesn't seem that doesn't seem particularly fair. Denis Shapovalov as well, obviously he had a good run at Wimbledon last year. He's not particularly happy about it. So it's interesting to see how it feels like the players, I feel like the reaction has been more negative than positive. There have been a few players who have backed the decision, Sloane Stephens, understandably. She's on the WTA player council. She said, I think the decision that was taken was the correct one. So you can see there's people on both sides of the argument, but I think at the moment, I think the big question is, what does this mean in terms of availability? Who's going to play? There's already doubts about Naomi Osaka. There's a big, you know, it's going to be very interesting because these players are going to have to make this decision at some point..

"The only thing I'm annoyed about is to his next tournament is Rotterdam and who's his first opponent, it's Andy Murray. So, you know, so it was a bit part of me which feels a little bit bittersweet at this result because yeah, he's in such great form and I think Andy Murray is going to have quite a task on him, I think if he wants to if he wants to go ahead and beat him in Rotterdam. Might not even get to that inevitable last set tiebreak that Andy Murray has been having in his first round matches at these events. But well, we'll see. Yeah, not ideal coming up against someone who's obviously in really good form and just got his first top 5 win of his career. Let's move on to a clay court event Joel, the golden swing has been, oh my God. Yes. I do love a bit of golden swing action. The drawers are just full of clay courts. Yeah, it's epic. So we have the chord but open in Cordoba, Argentina. Diego Schwartzman was looking quite handy for the win, but came a cropper against a Chilean Alejandro tibio in the semifinal. He made it, and he made it all the way to the fire. A very good chance to win, but ultimately, Albert Ramos Fidelis, veteran Spaniard, you know, kind of destroyed to be lo's dream run. It was three set final four 6 6 three 6 four Ramos venosus winning his fourth title on the tour. But I think what was the most interesting from this tournament was the story of tobelo and he was a break up in that last set. I think a double breakup in the second set and just multiple chances but wasn't able to put it together to go all the way in the end. As much as his run was fantastic. I mean, coming all the way through qualifying, getting to the final beating the number one seed as well along the way who was in his home tournament in Diego Schwartzman, beating him in straight sets as well, very, very impressive. But regardless, I think in that final, I think the tale was in that third set. I think experience perhaps told a little bit you know, obviously that was his debut, ATP tour level final. And I think with such an experienced player like ram was for no less across the court, a player who I think is very well versed in winning ATP titles on the clay courts. I think this was his one four titles surprise surprise. They've all been on clay, but yeah, the fact that I think to be was up for one. I think he actually had points to go 5 one up wasn't able to do it. And I think ram has been known as just used all his experience to kind of claw back the score line and get it done. And drop to dropped on his back after match point, you could see how much it meant to him and again it was a very it was a very passionate crowd, very patriotic crowd and you could hear it all the way through the tournament, I think, particularly in that semifinal, they were not particularly happy with their home country and Diego Schwartzman losing. But I mean, for grammar of last year, just a nice win. I think with these kind of two 50s, the golden swing, it's just a big opportunity for these kind of clay quarters to come out and grab a title and got the Argentina open next who's to say he couldn't go on and do it again. But yeah, it's been a very, very impressive, I think performance from ramrod Sven O less and for TB, oh yeah, hopefully he can do go on and kick on more. I suspect he will try and ply his trade on more clay courts than anything else, perhaps Kim, he's the next Juan Manuel seren dolo who had a similar run a similar dream like runner at the quarterback open last year. Yeah, this time last year we were talking about him because he was, I think, well, he is Argentinian, so he was at home and qualified, made his way through to the final, but I think serendip actually won it, didn't he? So tabula wasn't quite able to do that. But I was just looking at it to be like, he's actually born in Canada, but represents chili. And yeah, he's highest ranking now. One one two after this week. So perhaps the rest of the golden swing if he can get some good results, he'll break the top hundred. And, well, perhaps he might have he might cause a bit of an upset when we get to sort of what I call the main clay court season in Europe, not wanting to sound like I'm being pro Europe there, but this is generally the two 50s as opposed to the masters events. I did enjoy, despite there being a French event in Montpellier, I did enjoy Benoit paire just chose to play the chord about open out in South America. I'm assuming it's because you prefer playing on the outdoor clay as opposed to like the indoor hardcourts but I just thought it was quite funny that a French player would choose to go all the way over to South America. And Benoit paid to be fair, had a good tournament in Australia, but again, came a cropper in the first round against Xiaomi munar in straight sets. So it didn't quite work out for him, did it? No, I mean, maybe he just prefers the weather. I think he did this last year as well. I'm sure we were talking about him deciding to take a very different route, but fair play. Spanish fit well, Hispanic food, Argentinian food, you know, probably a bit more maybe his vibe. I don't know. But yeah, we had that. The golden swing is underway, which is fantastic. Well done to Ramos vinolas. And then we also had the ATP event in Pune in India, which was outdoors on hard court. And we had, well, someone who I maybe thought would actually be playing the golden swing. And that's zhao sauda who won pine. And this is his first title in a long time. He's had a few titles in the past, but has been struggling of late with a few injuries and hasn't really been at this stage of a tournament for a few years now on the tour. And he came through against Emil roots of Ori, who's quite an up and coming player. Did quite well at the Australian open I think had that long match with Felix. So coming through another three set final here, 7 6 four 6 6 one. So quite convincing in that last set, really stormed away with it at the end. Yeah, that first set particularly was really exciting. I think sausa was down rusev or I think was serving for that set. So I was able to make it go to a tie break and he won it 11 9 and he I think he felt when he celebrated a celebrated wildly just winning that first set on the tie break given how much he was on the back foot, I think. So yeah, it was a really fun final. Both players, I think, particularly in those first two sets, really competitive, really, really good tennis. So yeah, nice, nice tournament. The top seed as an surprisingly lost his opening match to Elias email of Sweden, who, as I said, kind of got to the semifinals. So yeah, a little bit kind of disappointing, I think if you're at. But yeah, it's certainly opened up the draw, I think, to someone else and sounds are coming in unseeded. He's again a very experienced player. He's been plying his trade, I think, on ATP and challenger circuits, getting those kind of getting that mileage in. And yeah, it's been impressive, run to the final for him and to cap it off with the victory was very, very good. However, Kim, I will say, I watch some of the highlights. He needs to work on his grunting because it's a continual bug bear with me. I know kind of seasoned listeners of us will have heard me say this many times before. But salz is grunt is borderline hindrance. It is, if you go watch the highlights, you can hear his audible, his audible grunt is very, very close to when Ruth savory hits the ball and I just hope in the future I think this could be the next sort of big thing that umpires potentially clamp down on. I particularly I think on the men's circuit is these extended grunting sounds after the hitting the ball. Because I think if rusev worry had gone up to the umpire and said, this guy is grunting to the point where it's putting me off, me hitting my ground straight. I think he would have had a credible case..

"Yeah, I think Murray probably should have been Tara Daniel, but it is one of the moments you just don't know how much money he's got in him. You know, 5 sets is a lot to play for Murray. So even with two days, even with day and a half probably recovery, it's still a lot to ask him to then. Play again. And he did have a good week in Sydney before. So perhaps he's just worn out. So I don't know how it's just a weird one that one. Expected more of radical, but again, you get blisters on your hand what can you do? That's an effect of having not played for a while because obviously had COVID, so she couldn't. She didn't have much of a preseason. So, you know, that's obviously had a physical effect. I think there's obviously hampered her credit to she put up a fight, didn't she, she wasn't going to give in to your team one is her to withdraw, didn't she? Had she won that no chance she would have played against you would have played a third round match. But yeah. Watson kind of what I expected really to do second round third round would be nice but second round at slams probably where you expect what's into be now. And obviously we had Harriet dart to get eager from tech in the first round, which is a nightmare drawer for a qualifier. So yeah, I think some of it comes down to the draw. The drawers and some of it comes down to a little bit of not quite what you would expect from them. Would you give out of ten do you think for Brits and Melbourne in the singles? 5 5 6. If ten is exceptional and I don't know actually let's say ten is exceptional and 5 is 5 to 6 is what is kind of expected then actually probably four to 5. There was definitely a little bit more and hopefully come the next grand Sam come the French Open hopefully singles singles wise, we can do a bit better. But yeah, let's move on. We'll see we had some tops or some of the top seeds in action. I mean, we did have the top seed left in action. Daniel Medvedev, he beat van der zen in straight sets 6 four 6 four 6 two also won against Benoit paire in four sets, 6 three 7 5 6 7 6 four. I mean, just talking about these matches, we're still, I think, for Medvedev. He's not that curious match, I think. Yes, he was tested. And I was sort of expecting van der zand maybe to give him a bit more of a run for his money, but again he just came out just playing two good two good tennis at the moment and he comes up against big serving likes to come to the net maxim cressy in the next round who came overcame Chris O'Connell, the Australian in four sets. Do you see any issues there for Medvedev? Or do you just think he's just still on his march? Potentially all the way to the title. Yeah, no, I think he's probably going all the way to the title. He's got the most probably open draw now that he could have wished for especially his section. He's not playing a seed in the fourth round. Chile itch and Felix Australia seem I don't think I troubling too much looking at just the other seeds in his quarter. Potentially sits you pass or sinner. I don't think it would be too difficult for him. I think if he gets Nadal or well, if he gets Nadal in the fight, oh that's probably that's probably going to be his biggest test is against Nadal. If the doll makes it to the final. But I think it's probably in the absence of Novak Djokovic in the draw. I think Medvedev is obviously the clear favorite. So, you know, he plays excellent on a hard court. So yeah, I don't see, I can't really see anyone troubling him. I saw him watch. I watched him pay curios. I didn't see his third round match. Against both van der San. I mean, we also had Yannick sinner defeating Andy Murray conqueror Taro Daniel in four sets. Yeah, I was sort of the performance. I wanted to put it against Tara Daniel, but the fact that he got as a qualified got to the third round took a set off sinner. Yeah, it shows that he, again, it was some very, very good form and maybe Murray will look at that result and say, hey, he just played he just played some really, really good tennis. And he did make Yannick swimmers sweat, I think, a little bit in their match, but sinner coming through a very, very good competitor. I think he'll have gone into that match with sitting with a lot of confidence having beaten Andy Murray in straight sets. You know, he won't have he won't have gone into that going I'll crack on down. We're going to play someone who's really good because he's already beaten someone who's really good. And also I think he's the last qualifier in the drawer, isn't he at that stage? So to, you know, he's got a bit of a little bit of the radical news about him. This Australian open in the deepest going qualifier in the drawer. So you think he's got another he's played 6 matches. That's probably more matches than he would play normally in a week anyway..

"Bracket, which yes, because it makes sense. Yeah, because seeds 25 to 32 are slated to play seeds one to 8 in the third round, whereas seed 17 to 24 are slated to play 9 to 16. Yeah, it makes a lot of sense to me. And yeah, he really engaged with that question. It was very interesting. And he was asked a lot about how his feeling physically because it was grueling today. They played in the heat of the day. He's probably going to need a lot of reserves to face it to pass next. And he said, obviously this was immediately after the match be said he felt a lot better than he did after the previous match against Francis tiafoe when he cramped right in fact he started cramping on match point. And he continued cramping after them actually said he got to the gym and his whole body just went into cramp, but he said that was think he gave this great quote. He looked down the barrel and said, nerves are a crazy, crazy thing. And he said, you know, that was down to the fact that it was all tied up in the fact that he was playing TFO who's a good friend and somebody really looked up to that made him a lot more nervous. So he is ready to face Stefano sit to pass and by stark contrast sits a passes press conference today was a weird time, David Matt warned me that his previous press conference was weird and probably not to bother with this one. But I wasn't doing anything else at the time, so I thought, I'll go for the pod. Further pods are go. And my God, it was weird. He sat down. In a T-shirt and shorts and he was literally unable to speak due to how cold and shivering he was. He sort of had lock jaw. From the cold. And we sort of stuttering through his answers due to how cold he was and giving giving some very bizarre answers. And I'm sure he was cold, it's very air conditioned in there, but I'm sure that Adidas supply him with hoodies. I think he owns hoodies and it was all the more perplexing because the reason I told you or warned you about the press conference was that he did the exact same thing in the press conference before. So it's not like this was his first experience of being cold. No, it was a really, really weird vibe. I asked him how the shoulder was, and he said, fine. Thanks very much. And I thought it was the sort of slightly defensive answer that you don't give if your shoulder really sorry elbow really is fine. Thanks very much. But look, he won in four sets today against Benoit paire. I've got a sneaky feeling about Fritz winning that, you know, you were the early spotter David of the fact that it's a pass really struggles against big servers. He's had heavy losses here. Against big servers. He's improved since then, but I still think there's a weakness there. I think a lot depends on how Fritz comes up physically, but I think that'll be a match at the very least. I think Fritz needs to attack him and I think he will, because I think that generally is his mindset. I think that's maybe why he's taken a bit longer to come through. It's not, he's got a couple of ways you can play tennis matches and I think he started to package his game more effectively now. I mean, actually, I think if on that returning against attacking players or big servers vibe, if you put cresty up against it's about, so I would really fear for 6 to pass in that matchup. I think he would struggle with that. Maxim cressy David thinks the same. Because Matt and I spoke to Maxine cressy for the first time today after his third round victory over Australian Chris O'Connell. He's made the second week of Islam for the first time. He's going to face the number two seed the sort of de facto top seed. Daniel Medvedev and Matt and I went to his press conference and he is a confident man. Oh yes. I had heard other people say that maxime crisis has a lot of belief in himself and is confident. But hearing it from maxime cressy himself was it took you back the confidence to see that I felt like I'd been to I felt like I'd heard a sort of cult leader speak and the colt was maxim cressy. And Matt and I walked down from the press conference today together. And I was like, well, maybe he's going to beat mep forever. Maybe he's going to win the title and you know, I'd been totally brainwashed into maxim grassy land because he spoke that compellingly about the cult of maxime Chrissy. Yeah, well, I mean, look, before we before, before we delve too much deeper, we're actually going to play you the audio of Matt and I's encounter with might seem crazy. We weren't the only two in the press conference there was one other Australian journalist and Frank lamella a brilliant French journalist from keep, who asked him some French questions after after the grilling he received from Matt and I but from me rather but he faced questions from the Australian journalist first and one of the questions he was asked about whether he had a kit sponsor because it didn't it didn't look on the court like he was he was wearing branded kit and this is what he had to say to that. Yeah, wait, I'm patient. I wait until I have a major breakthrough and I have a leverage to negotiate, especially during the COVID and everything. It's much tougher to have a great deal with a sponsorship. So I prefer really breaking through the top 50 top ten and then I negotiate yeah. Is that what you see yourself going top ten? Yeah, even number one. Yeah. I'm very confident. I can my games talk in bits anyone. So starting this year, I'm very confident. I played Nadal and I really believed it really put him at uncomfortable position. So if I really stick to my routines and to a very disciplined mindset, I can do it. Do you feel like you obviously personal private do you feel extra pride having this success doing it the way that you're doing it with that game style? People are calling you the guy that's bringing back certain volley. Yeah. Yeah, my vision from the very beginning was to bring certain volley back. I've had many different many people tell me that it's dead. It's not going to be efficient or effective today, and the courts are slower. The returns, there's better returners today. I've heard many excuses that serve in volleys, not going to be the best game style for me. But I had a vision to bring it back and I believe it's going to happen. Can I ask about the notebook that you have as a change of end to what sort of stuff? Yeah. It's one of my routines to be in the present. In those kind of conditions, with the crowd and everything, the mind can wonder really easily..

"And I think she credits certainly the fact that she's able to make a fast start that is helping her just kind of run away with winning. You know, she beat Harriet dart in the first round and then in the second round, she had another very, very comfortable performance against Rebecca Peterson 6 two 6 two. So yeah, I mean it's yeah, I think she's definitely one to watch, given the start that she has had. She's obviously playing with full of confidence at the moment and it's just leading her into I think positions where she feels more relaxed and comfortable and can swing freely and yeah, the score lines are just a little bit of a reminder of when she won the French Open and was kind of just blitzing the field. So we'll see how that develops, but yeah, some very, very good opening couple of rounds, I think, for sure on tech. Yeah, it wouldn't surprise me if she did what she did at the Fred. She's also got a new coach. She's working with and she just seems like in a very good place. Physically mentally. So just a note on sabalenka always reminding me a bit of a Sasha zverev when he's having grief on his serve. And I think when Sarah got to that U.S. open final against Dominic team, he hadn't played particularly well, I would say in that tournament. But just kind of made it through and got to the final most won it. So I wouldn't be surprised if sapling maybe it does a bit of a spare of and we'll see. I don't like to compare people, but it just kind of that thought just popped into my mind. And just on a really nice positive note for local players, we had two obviously wild cards getting through to the third round. So Madison English, who came through in that first round oh God, who did she beat in the first round? I can't remember that. Because that part of the draw game is opened up. Big time because yeah Madison English and Hayley baptiste, I think they both had big upsets in the first round. And it was a very big opportunity for one of them to make the third round and it was for the local Madison English who came through 7 6 two 6 6 two. She beat Layla Fernandez. Oh, there we go. That was it. Yeah. Fernandez. I was trying to think, I just couldn't remember. Yeah, but she came through against, yeah, baptiste, so she's into the third round. And Christopher O'Connell took out Schwartzman Diego Schwartzman 13th seed in straight sets. I don't know who I was surprised by Benoit paire the third round Christopher O'Connell in the first round. Yeah. But yeah, it was actually great for Benoit pair because you know he I saw an interview with him after his match. He was very emotional. Tears in his eyes. You know, he's obviously been through a lot. He's got COVID 364 times over the last year. I think has found the bubble life and having a tour during a pandemic harder than the most people. And we also had rapper coming through in straight sets over German qualify janik, 6 two 6 three 6 four. I think it was a bit of a closer match than the scoreline suggested. Raphael wasn't at his best, but he's got the job done as one needs to do in the second round of Islam and I think it could have been that much against coconuts couldn't it. So avoided big match in that respect. He's got a hatch knob next, though, which is tomorrow. And that will obviously be a big, big step up, I think, you know, from hemp and who's a 120 odd in the world to Karen hatch and of who is dangerous? I mean, it felt like Nadal Hanson was very similar match up for Murray Daniel with coming through qualifying. It was still quite tough in a day. You know, it took him two hours 42 minutes to win. So I guess it was a straight set score line. But yeah, it was quite tough for him. I mean, moving on to some of the other seeds that were in action. You know, we had alcaraz and bertini winning, which is very exciting because they will face off against each other in the third round. Perhaps one of the picks of the third round Carlos alcaraz versus Matteo bertini. They both won in straight sets, Al kraz beat do some live 6 two 6 one 7 5 and yeah bertini also winning against nakashima 6 one four 6 6 four 6 one sorry in four sets..

"Actually, in some ways. Yeah, he's actually. Maybe it's because he's playing on the same day as Medvedev, perhaps, and I don't know. My attention kind of goes to Medvedev. I think lots of people would probably feel the same. He described his win as a lot of fighting and a little bit of swearing, which I thought was quite a good summary. He was frustrated. He said it took him a time quite a bit of time to work out buyers, someone had never played before. Quite a tricky game. I think I asked him straight up. How was your elbow? And he said, fine. He said, honestly, I've not troubled me to Sydney. It is fine, and he didn't need any treatment, or anything like that. So it's a good sign. Because that's my biggest worry about sits a pass. You know, I do think other than that, the game, the game can be there. So then it sort of feels like. I've dropped a clanger then is what you're saying by not having him in my quarterfinals. I haven't got him in there. We've only worked with the information in front of you. I sort of, I had him losing to Taylor Fritz in round four, which is a much still on course to happen for it to beat TFA today in three sets, which is a big win little wobble from any double faulted serving match point serving for the match, but then he wrapped it up in the third set tiebreak. So they're on a little collision course. That TFA for it to match. I think it was, we didn't get to see that much of it three very competitive sets. I think, for those three, I mean, so striking the difference in physique between those two. One of them has been playing a lot of golf. And the other one's been playing less golf. I would say, but yeah, Taylor Fritz looking good. And I don't know. I don't know what I was thinking. Anyway, we're all thinking vaguely the same thing. So Fritz now faces Roberto Bautista, a goo and sits a pass faces Benoit pair. Who's unexpectedly doing a thing, he's having a run, he's beaten Grigor Dimitrov, he's got this extraordinary head to head, I think, with Gregor Dimitrov has and he's beaten in four times. So who knows? Maybe it's just one of these quirky head to heads, or maybe Benoit paire is ready to finally fulfill his talent anyone want to speculate about whether that's the case is he going to pass? And that sounded grueling, and then the match seemed to go on for another 7 hours after that. And it was only four sets. Goodness knows what would have happened if Alejandro davidovich for managed to take it into a 5th, which could have happened four tiebreak sets. It was, wasn't it? Marathon marathon stuff. And I know Felix is an extraordinary physical specimen, but he has had serious court time to get to this point. Yeah, and played right in the heat of the day. It was hot today at Melbourne park and this was in the baking sun for four plus hours. Yeah, I found it interesting. I remember we commented on Aussie against battista goo at ATP cup and how good was your earliest scene looked, and how secure he looks. He wasn't making the same errors that he often makes. And I really thought maybe that playing someone with that rhythm helped him. But he's played two players here who give him rhythm. Rusev Rory, and davidovich for kina, their baseline that he's had rhythm. And yet, I've watched quite a lot of him. And he is spraying the ball. You do not know what is coming off of his racket. It's either a sweet connection with a perfect pop, and it looks brilliant. It's sort of mesmerizing. Or it's a shank and it's going ten feet long. And it's a real mix at the moment. And I do think perhaps though the video makes for keener and Rousey, both have firepower. And I think he's been wary of that. And I think he's been trying to pull the trigger a little bit, perhaps when he shouldn't be. Very different style of his next match against Dan Evans, who didn't have to play today. After render kanesh withdrew with a wrist injury. So couldn't be more contrasting circumstances for those two Felix about 8 hours court time into matches Dan Evans very fresh, having had a day off. Sometimes that doesn't help. You know, sometimes that can actually hurt a player. So that's an interesting third round, but gosh, Felix has had to have to battle through and his celebration afterwards was as big as you see from Phoenix also alias seem. He was buzzing to have won that today. He really was. Felix augere seeming in Stan Evans is a match that I can definitely get excited about. That'll be in a couple of days time. The schedule for tomorrow is tasty. It's very tasty indeed, David. There is a lot of this that you're not going to be allowed to watch because it's happening in the middle of the night. "And when we're talking about it in a positive way, we're not talking about it as a hindrance and again someone like bass Felipe he just played so, so well, you know, coming through in 5 sets. Yes, there are a couple of blips there. He still is losing too many tie breaks for my liking Kim. I feel like he could have got it done in four. And I did wonder whether he once he lost that force that whether it was going to run away from him from him from a little bit. But the fact that he's got, I think, you know, so much experience, a kind of draw upon and great memories as well, I think, from Melbourne, a place that he loves to play. I think that's kind of what got him through and yeah, faces faces Taro Daniel in the next round. Yeah, Terry Daniel, I don't know too much about him. I've seen his name in many a draw sheet, but never really watched him. I think he's a 120 in the world, so I mean, that's currently a sort of similar ranking to Andy, of course, but yeah, Japanese player is about 28 years old. I don't really know what to expect, but I have this sense that Andy should beat him. And I think would usually, but I don't think we can take that as a give me. So again, a match at a time, but I would love to see Murray against sinner in the third round, so obviously really hoping that Andy can come through and just take it. Straight sets. We need a straight line. We do need that. I think his body needs that. We all need it. I'm sure Murray fans would rather have that and not the Murray coaster that they've been going on that you guys have all been going on so much. I mean, his last straight sets win was against Benoit paire at Wimbledon in 2017. Just to tell you how long ago that is, Benoit paire did get to a fourth round of a Grand Slam, which doesn't feel like it has happened recently. Although he is in the second round here, but yeah, I hope Andy Murray I think if he does want to kind of cause a stir and make people think, oh, where how far can and how deep can you go in the tournament? I do think he's going to need to be able to kind of close these matches out and have as little court time as possible. And I think, as I said, we've qualified like Taro Daniel on the court next in round two. I think that's for him. Yes, you obviously want him to win. But I think that is a good opportunity for him to get on the court three sets, get off the court and then hopefully look forward to potentially around three match against Yannick sinner. Easier said than done and maybe I'm thinking about that's what I think the Andy Murray of old would probably potentially think. But I certainly think with the way he's playing and the confidence in the belief that he has, I think that he should really be looking to get the job done against a qualifier and kind of in a dismissive fashion to kind of put the statement win together, I think. Yeah, and one thing that was quite strange in his match today on the John Kane arena was what he thought was people in the crowd booing but was actually a sort of Cristiano Ronaldo style celebration. Yeah. I've never heard this before, but they were all saying super instead, which obviously sounds like people booing. And they were doing that in the curious match, which was followed and that was curios against Liam Brody, of course. And I mean, this was a classic kind of curious, you know, showing up on the John Kane arena. He did a between the legs underarm serve in his first service game, just absolute classic Nick curios. It was a fairly entertaining affair of straight sets, just pretty much a break in each set. And annoyingly, the first two sets Liam got broken in his first service game. So kind of always playing catch up really. But I mean, curios has got Medvedev next, which I expect will be also entertaining, but I do expect method of will will come through and put curios well, I want to say please play. I mean, curios has a leading head to head. He's never lost him ever, but I think you know that was before me became a Grand Slam champion. I think Medvedev is a different kettle of fish these days. I think that encounter is going to be fascinating because we all know how Medvedev and the crowd react or how they don't react. So I think it's going to be interesting to see how Medvedev as well as curiosity with the crowd in that match because yeah, this match was, I think, like a wild ride, yeah, it felt exhibition Y at times underarm serving through the leg shots as well. It was great to see, you know, Liam Brody just reached the main draw of a Grand Slam. It meant we saw in the end of qualifying how much it meant to him dropping to his knees and he's obviously playing some really, really good tennis at the moment. I thought he put in a very decent performance against Nick curios who, again, just showed how much talent he has particularly with so many free points you can get on his serve. He's always going to be dangerous. You do wonder I think around his fitness. He spoke quite candidly about the fact that he's had coronavirus recently and that left him bedridden for a few days. He was fortunate that where he was isolating, he did have a tennis court to practice some practice and serves on, but you do have to wonder if he does get pushed into a fourth or a 5th or the conditions are really, really punishing what effect that is going to have on curiosity. But at the same time, as always, you do wonder if the crowd certainly love him and will galvanize him and will probably give him a pint of beer as well, which he gladly took at the end of the Lee brodie batches he walked off. Yeah, how often do we see that? Yeah, I mean all the Aussie guys that must absolutely he's must be there like spirit I do I feel. Yeah, no, I mean this classic curios and like you said recently had COVID. I mean, quite a few players have recently had COVID, obviously emerged carding. So it does sort of make it interesting. You don't often know, I guess it depends how badly they had it, how it affected their training. But some might actually bounce back really quickly. Others will obviously take longer to kind of get into the groove. So it throws a new sort of element of intrigue, I suppose, I mean, not that we want this element of inventory, but it's effective quite a few players hasn't it in different ways..
