Secretary Robert Wilkie Describes How We Can "Clean the Stables"
"Look at what happened in Georgia in Crimea under Obama, what happened in Ukraine under Biden in Afghanistan. And then we have the interstitial of the four years of president Trump, that's because of an election secretary wilkie, and we need that election sooner than we know. Let's talk about your observation about how you clean the statements. It's been done twice dramatically in our history. The first time was in the 1930s with the accession of George Marshall. Yes. And he kept a sheet. And he cleaned out the old tired risk averse generals who had grown up in peace. And he plucked people like Dwight Eisenhower, who was a lieutenant colonel. And made him a Brigadier. He took George Patton from the command at fort Meyer and handed him the second armored division. He was commanding a regiment at fort Meyer. And all of a sudden he's commanding the second armored division. And Bradley, who had been an instructor at fort benning. These people were moved to the top of the food chain. Ronald Reagan sent shockwaves. Through the department, he put in charge Casper weinberger. A veteran of World War II who had seen combat at its rawest. He was given a check, but more importantly he was given the authority to clean house. And the appeasers and the dead Enders were moved out. Programs were put in train. To overwhelm the Soviet Union. So you have a combination of those two. You have the dynamic leadership of someone like a weinberger and then the military foresight of a general Marshall.

"Search is on locally for suspects in a triple shooting. At the benning road metro station in northeast D.C. on Thursday. Of the three victims shot here at the benning road metro station to our teenagers. One is a 15 year old male that has a gunshot wound to the thigh. He is in critical condition at a local hospital, D.C. police commander Darnell Robinson says that victim was attacked by three suspects on the metro station platform, one of the suspects started firing. That's when the two innocent bystanders were hit by stray bullets, Robinson says those victims include another 15 year old boy, and a 34 year old woman. They are expected to be okay. The adult and the juvenile were sitting on the bench and a stray bullet struck the lower extremities. At the benning road metro station nickel in Ellie, WTO news. We reminded Thursday shooting was actually the second at a metro station in two days, a man was shot and killed Wednesday night at metro center and now metro's GM is speaking out this morning about gun violence in America. In the wake of a shooting on a busy train platform during rush hour, metro general manager Randy Clark is calling for action on gun violence. The shootings all over the place in America, and it has to suddenly get done. Police say the shooting happened around 6 20 Thursday, one 28 year old Troy Bullock got in a fight with an off duty FBI agent at metro center and pushed him over a railing on the platform. Bullock also fell, then the agent shot and killed him. Police say they found a handgun on him. Clark says the gun violence is happening too much. Nachos on metro, but all across the country. We need our community to come together in our country to come together and stop having so much gun violence. Stetson Miller, WTO P news. Oh, here at WTO fee, we turn to a congressional panel's new report this week, the sharply criticizes the Washington commanders and owner Daniel Snyder recovering up the team's sexual misconduct for decades. This morning, WTO Capitol Hill correspondent Mitchell Miller. This is really the first time we've learned anything about that testimony, which came several months ago. You'll remember that the committee actually subpoenaed dense Snyder for his testimony after he voluntarily didn't come forward. The committee is highly critical of him, suggesting that his testimony was at times misleading or unhelpful. The report sites more than a hundred times when Snyder was asked about topics where he responded that he didn't know or couldn't recall something. That includes questioning about his hiring of private investigators while he admitted he used them. He said he could not recall who they were talking to or who they would target, which seems kind of stretchy credulity. One of those who may have been targeted was NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, former team president Bruce Allen testified that Snyder indirectly warned him not to expose any possible wrongdoing by Snyder and sent private eyes to his home, also victims of sexual harassment and worked for the team have indicated they came under pressure not to go public. Virginia congressman Jerry Connelly, who's a member of the committee, issued a statement accusing Snyder of stonewalling withholding thousands of documents and says, in his words, it's a sorry attempt to conceal further evidence of his own wrongdoing. Well, Mitch, what does the team have to say about this report? The team has pushed back hard on this report, issuing a statement calling it one sided and saying lawmakers are chasing headlines. They say the committee didn't specify any witnesses who Snyder allegedly prevented from coming forward, and the team also notes that Snyder testified for 11 hours before the committee, citing Republican lawmakers on the panel who have been critical of the investigation. So fans and critics of the commanders might be wondering, Mitch, if this will have an impact on whether Snyder sells. That's really the big question. The report certainly doesn't do anything for Snyder's reputation and the management of the team. But it's still unclear what if any impact this will have on getting a new owner. House Republicans, as I just indicated, are critical of the report. They'll take over the house in January. So this investigation is effectively done, Snyder and his wife, Tanya, as you know, recently said they had hired a division of Bank of America to consider potential transactions, possibly a sale, but you have to have 24 NFL team owners who would have to sign off on all of this. And there are still a lot of questions about the team's future, where it's going to play, is it going to

"Metro station. And Ellie has a report from the scene. There are so many police vehicles surrounding the benning road metro station that it looks like a police station parking lot. D.C. police commander Darnell Robinson says three suspects attacked a 15 year old boy shooting him and leaving him critically injured. The other victims were innocent bystanders, sitting on a bench when they were hit by stray bullets. He says those victims include another 15 year old boy, and a 34 year old woman, they are expected to be okay, the suspects got away and police are working to track them down. At the benning road metro station Niko and Ellie WTO P news. Meantime, police have identified the victim of last night's shooting at the metro center station. They say it was 28 year old Troy Bullock of southeast D.C. who pushed an FBI agent backwards over a railing and onto the platform. Bola himself also went over the railing and both of them landed about 8 feet below that platform after the fall, the FBI agent fired their weapon, hitting Bullock who died at the scene. That player can pick up each. Could trough honestly bro. I guess our fantasy right Yeah Shore show the islanders real quick. 'cause i've been washing his gain the entire time that we've been recording and Bro jeremy swaim in the fucking rookie goaltender. Five games in the fucking league is a brick fucking wall dude. Dude is nuts absolutely insane. Twenty four saves tonight so he got me fourteen point four points or now guaranteed with this win. I think it's going to be what like twenty points at that point about the dude. He's been insane for me And he's been insane against us island or team that is struggling struggling struggling. Heart so Now i've transitioned away from fantasy now fully focused on the islanders. Some too tough breaks one. I'd say i really don't care about josh bailey. Day-to-day he's out as was clutterbuck. He's out of tonight's game against the bruins Josh bailey god. He's out of the lineup. I mean it sucks said. He's hurt but Do hate him. he's slumping so bad. he's so bad. Like literally the Swimming didn't even have to move. He literally shot it right into swaim in on a breakaway Nbc your trash This team this game so far. I'll guess we'll talk about this game. I considering It's the one that's fresh on my brain They came out pretty hot If any of you guys watch the last game against the bruins they They came out pretty. Flat took a penalty in the i literally which behind the eight ball. The entire game couldn't get anything going. I think the first period they were outshot. Twenty three to seven. So you're you're getting outshot. Twenty seven in one period. It's it's not a good look at all But definitely came out better Just to be absolutely steamrolled by a goal with two point five seconds left in the first period by the bruins and then a goal quickly like thirty seconds into the second period so down to all pretty much to a from the second third period. Couldn't get anything going. Look really bad five high opportunity chances that you just can't capitalize on because wait a is the second coming of jesus so that sucked I kinda talked about the last game team absolutely sucked nothing else..

I mean he's a pretty strong guy you know. He played on the red wings. So now he's coming To the capitals. he's definitely gonna be playing a lot better But long term i mean. You're losing out a hunt jacob ron. I think he's going to be pretty good. I'm the next couple of years is going to be a pretty efficient scorer. Who's a first round pick and twenty and a second round. Pick so richard panik to i. I'm not really too familiar with how. His outlook is for the future. He's a little bit older. i think. I think he's got twenty nine or thirty or something. He's actually thirty so be as bottom six. I think that he's playing third-line minutes. I think four or five minutes. So no he's plant their lineman. It's you know know. But jacob rana is a good piece is really. He's you know he's young and you might say i mean so's anthony mantha. I do like his contract. He's got three more years after this one for five point seven million the cap. It's not bad at all But you know i digress. It's it'll be interesting to see how the How they continue with this i i. I wasn't expecting such a sister price. I feel like it got better as the days. When long i was able to kinda like sit down and look at it and think that method is actually probably really going to help out this team right now but I just don't know man. I mean he's got three points in two games so yeah so he's definitely he's definitely on the right role but that about concludes it. I think for me at least on the deadline. Trains anything else. You want to mention. Nope i'm good. We spent a good amount of time on that so definitely lot to break down. I was actually thinking about doing a emergency episode of coventry. I know if. Pick and a third round pick so Kind of a steep price but definitely a great return and to further solidify their spot favorite in my opinion thing with the lightning. It's like you know. We know that their first round pick is going to be deep right. We know it's going to be like twenty eighth to thirty second you know. Oh yeah so. You know i dunno. It's basically a second. But you know. But i mean this year straffed though i mean who knows 'cause complete crap shoot because a lot of prospects played. That's that's what i was gonna say to is like also giving away a first round. Pick this season. Specially late in the draft like tampa's pick will be i feel like it loses even more value considering the This season that the prospects have had you know you're losing a year development for a lot of these players and especially late in the early second. You're looking at players that need a couple of years to develop possibly you know so. It definitely lost a lot of alley that way in my opinion. And i'm sure a couple of other guys so Yeah i don't think it was. That bad i don't think it was that bad of a payout and bigger pretty good return. I would say yeah So a tree. That six for me is Brennan menteur to the florida panthers for the buffalo sabres. Sorry buffalo sabres brennan monster. We're going to florida for round. Pick this year You know. Aaron act bug went on i r and yet you know they need somebody in the back end top. Four brennaman tour is that you know I should pick them up from a fantasy team. Because i expected And pb one and everything he wasn't but you know you settle into a new system. Things look a little bit different right. I mean you know. It's a is a good fit for the panthers. I think To have back there again. 'cause excellence gone even the playoffs you know so to solidify their Death for the playoffs. I think it's a good move for them. Especially the low cost of a third round pick. Yeah i mean a third round pick You know we're going to be talking about the buffalo a lot A common theme. I think we could say now. Is that a. They didn't get a lot in return for some of these guys. And i would say brandon menteur. I feel like you should be able to field more than a third round. Pick for I could be wrong in that assessment. But i i definitely think that florida really needed to bolster up and this was. This was great. It was a good price for the modestly. Yeah next Another team that. That is a quite favored in the quest for a cup. This year is the colorado avalanche day They make a trade with san jose For a fifth round pick and great pattern when that to familiarize but they receive in return. Devin dube nick so great. Great well i would say he's a he's a very solid back. Oh you know what. I mean he definitely could be like a like a french starter for them and He's just going to be a guy that they're not really have to worry about him being in.

His decision also impacted the Iraqi paypal creating hostilities. Between the locals insurgents and touring military three Justin has since been medically discharged from the army and has spoken with US candidly about military experience including the Janabi family family murders adding additional context to our episode on the crime. Justin started by telling us how he came to join the military before nine. Eleven by buddy names all and we're GONNA do the steel challenge together. They had a program in the navy. That dead allowed you to join with a friend. She going at the same time in guaranteed you a selection slot to go to buds went through got qualified for that. What I was seventeen at the time and I showed up to maps like the process for joining the military? Here in America's like you'll go through talk to a recruiter you'll do. There's some preliminary testing then you have to go up to maps for you know. Some physical batteries stuff apt to batteries. Stuff like that on the day that I was supposed go to maps. And that's where you sign your contract. My buddy bailed on me completely so I went up there on my own and as it turns out the job it was like a crypto does slash networking like computer type position. That wasn't available anymore and so I was like okay. I'm not going to do this because I was seventeen. you can't join into your eighteen hours in what was called the delayed entry program so you get all your stuff done when you're seventeen and then basically as soon as you're eighteen you ship out. I basically dumpstered the idea. Nine nine eleven happened and like in a serious relationship. You know I had a pretty decent job I was a blackjack dealer. Casino pit boss. The relationship ended and I remember just being in a position where I was just Kinda like okay. Like what am I gonNa do now because like all of my plans kind of like based around future with that person listen and you know. I had no idea what I was going to be doing. And I was like cleaning out my room and I found my body and my original ship date was supposed to be on September eleven and at that point I was just like while somebody else's probably like in my place. I just watched band of brothers. Zoom may be sound like the biggest cliche ever. But you literally after watching that I was like you know I want the hundred and first airborne infantry and if you're not going to give him I'm not going and at at that time the Iraq war kicked off this is like two thousand four. I want to say so it. It just really kicked off in Iraq. Ans- dance they couldn't find people join just as Iraq was a lot bloodier then Afghanistan. And so I got like a twenty thousand dollar bonus for joining the infantry which is unheard of because it's a it's a low like agr- apartment job. Yeah twelve days later from that data I found that I D I was on a plane for Benning to get into training so went through that then Amelie after that the air assault school school has learned a robot of the jobbers which is a big part of the hundred and first does and then got on my unit you know and it was. It was a very different thing to go through all the training knowing that. You're going to war like everybody. They're sergeants that were teaching. Just got back. It was their first combat deployment. mm-hmm there's people that were in the logistical infrastructure of basic training. They were headed down to the hundred. I with me so I know there was a lot of camaraderie. I I think apprehension everyone. Everyone knew with certainty that they were going. Everyone knew that it was popping off over there. So yeah yeah I mean it was. It was a crazy time for sure when we sent in Iraq so the way it worked out is I got down to one hundred I I I. And that's where I linked up with my unit and you get assigned to accompany and everything and that's how I ended up in First Striker Bravo Company the unit that the book was based not got down there on the mmu pre-deployment spin ups. you go out and do more training. You know out in the field and like these stimulated urban combat villages at the National Training C. C. Out in Louisiana we see Anna and you do training pull unit and then as smaller elements. Then you go. I mean usually get stood down a couple of times just because they don't like people knowing exactly when you're going to be leaving with how many people you're going and everything like that just operational security stuff so I wanna say so. From the day that we're seagoing. There is like a couple of week variation we went and we stopped in Germany on the way there and then landed in Saudi Arabia. You did our last combat zero before getting down into into theater which is like make. Sure Weapons Still dialed in. And then yeah. We're down to Iraq doc. We landed in Baghdad. It just a different world. I mean you land there and the war machine is is pretty pretty sophisticated so like by the time we got down there. We'd only been in Iraq in that kicked off two thousand. Three's basically the end of two thousand and four early two thousand and five. They already had this. Main kind of super base built up in in Baghdad. was called striker at the time and there was like a Pizza Hut and green bean copy. It's just weird but then you're like walking around in this area. That feels kind of like you know a military base and then you'll be talking with your friend and then all of a sudden you hear like a a huge explosion. A few hundred meters outside the perimeter. Then you'll hear a bunch of machine gun fire and from a couple of different areas and then you it'll just go silent right and you're like somebody has died at their like. That's crazy I it was just a a weird transition.

Popcorn with Peter Travers
An Interview with Adam Driver of 'Marriage Story'
"I M Peter Travers this his popcorn where he tell you what's happened in the movies and my guest. Today's Adam driver who has his own film festival between now I guess. Is it the the report that opened the first store that opens I Mirror story opens I in theaters. Then I think is net flicks on December first and I think report is soon after that a couple of weeks after that and star wars after that star wars after that. So how does that happen. Suddenly it is an atom drive for festival US too much too much too much of my face. It really sad. I think Mary story almost close to two years now. Mill wanted to wait a year and give them a lot have a lot of time to work work on it so it just the way the schedule worked out just turned into too much of my face. One time you're carrying around just closed in. Burn this right. Yeah Ah Yeah Yeah like a month and a half ago or so what he would do downtime. No I haven't I haven't had any. I've been having downtime. So it's so it's dry because there is none but I'm going to take some time the needle issuing something now but after that I'm going to take some in some time off and look at a tree. I just can't imagine that happening for you. I don't know if it's this like mid Western mentality in in me that And not to generalize the Mid West of like oh you go to work you get up and go to work in you come home and you're tired and then go to sleep you wake up and go to work so to me. It's Mike Land. Yeah it's it's not so like oh you work a lot. Well yeah that's what you do you do right you go you go to work like the idea of taking months off at like It's is just not wasn't was never in my delays or taking time off wasn't like a something that I'm used to I guess just marriage story he's here in the a poster and then this picture let's start with that one okay. I don't WanNa blow smoke or anything but it's to me. It's one of those rare times where movie turns out perfect. Well I do not know if when you were making it felt that way but it just everything just came together in such a way that it seemed that all had to be that way yet I could never predict which way it was going. Well that's a very nice compliment. No it didn't seem that it was perfect when we were making it. Ah I knew when I got the script that this it was a just as a document just as scripted was beautiful but then shooting it when we actually had to say the language. I was surprised by how difficult it was and then every usually shooting a movie. There's maybe one or two scenes that you know is coming up and you kind kind of Over think that senior. You're anticipating it too much then it's always you know running through your mind. I have that scene coming up for this movie. Every day seemed to be. I was that scene. I'm like Oh this scene is coming up now and then but no no. It's too soon in the shooting schedule. We need more time before But that is also a sign of great great writing where every seen as necessary and vital and the stakes are incredibly high. And that's what you kind of want where there isn't any fat is is it just because it was that emotional matched. Yeah because there's again. The language was beautiful in and of itself. And what's great about Noah's writing as a And how he directs is the the words of the words. And that's fine because I'm you know with W- come from a theater background so I'm used to the play the play but what the intention is behind the the lines can change. And the more you say when you actually have to save Say it to someone else and this one it was It was more emotional than I thought it was going to be because it's so beautifully written descriptions that Charlie has Nicole or you know beautiful. How the scenes with his sonner beautiful? It was hard not to kind of get swept up by it painful. Yeah very funny funny. Paint uh-huh and all of that is happening almost at the same time. He did a really great job of writing a very specific story from various. You Know Specific Lens. It was such a great guide of how you can project all of your relationship to divorce without getting too specific personal but it it was just. It felt very personal personal for everybody. That's why I think well I don't want to give away. Except it's about a break-up you know it's a marriage store that's what people. Yeah BR divorcing separating but really I mean I think movies are always kind of about a lot of things and it's also about you know how love can transition Russian into something else and how painful that can be You know one character is kind of is building themselves up in the other kind of breaking down you know a mourning warning of the loss of love is is also kind of what happens and in underneath hopefully all of the scenes. Where the are you know going through this kind of clinical ritual of getting divorced? There's there is this love underneath that. Hopefully hopefully you feel there still. Is this Connecticut thing that they for so long have had this relationship. That's felt second nature even just being room with each other just not mentally making a choice that that's not a reality anymore as hard. Yes we've seen movies about divorced about split ups marriage things that break up when that happens I think the audience anybody watching it can feel those emotions so I was gonna ask you to when you had your last seen. Do you take Charlie home with you. Is it hard to say goodbye to him. The good thing about working a lot is that there's something else to to distract you from From that I I have a good ability to as soon as it's done to try to drop to try to drop it and I'm always ready need to move on regardless of how much I like shooting. It was tough to shoot but I mean I loved working on this. I'm working with no is my friend. scarlets great Alan alda's Gr- like our radio to Laura dern you know it was a great cast and I loved going to work but I'm always ready for it to be over and so I I think I've just trained myself as soon soon as that's done like flush flush it out of your your mind except with something that you know you're gonNA do again. Something like Star Wars than you put it in the back of your mind somewhere and it kind of stays awesome because we have to keep working on it but stuff like this I try to flush it out of me. Burn this as soon as it's done to flush it burnt. Well let's switch to the report report okay. Political Thriller based on a True Story. So who is this guy that you're playing got him. Dan Jones who who was tasked to write what turned out to be the most comprehensive report for the Senate Intel Dianne Feinstein and the Senate intelligence eligible committee About the as post nine eleven torture program. He went through well. Acquainted to an urban library of information was like six million pages wrote a report. That's just over six thousand pages than it was condensed because it became a partisan issue in and condense to something over five hundred like forty five. I pages that's actually in a book that you can buy on Amazon of the actual torture report and then Scott the writer director can convince that down to who like one hundred and forty five page script so had. There's a lot of things that he could have put in there that maybe were more salacious but there. He was very disciplined and picking facts. That were undisputed that you could throw a dart at any line and there was references footnotes footnotes to back it up. And so that's kind of what it's about his his investigation. And that's what happens. I should say the dog ID investigator the little I guess in total will be seven years. Yeah there's no life no this guy is just determined to do something that when people look back on that time they said well. I know that it's enhanced interrogation waterboarding all that stuff. It just didn't work now. We didn't know that right right right. We didn't and him trying to get get that through like you say a partisan issue Dianne Feinstein also and Annette Benning is tremendous and she's really great but it's like a seventy s political thriller. It's like all the president's men it's like digging out the truth and making that exciting right. Tough is is the. Yeah which is why we knew. That's what happens but no one will really care if we don't you know track what maybe the movie is. Also what about someone being disillusioned by the institution that they grew up to trust having to find his moral compass within. How was he trying to leave his emotions out of it also address? What is the moral compass of our country you know there's a decorum that DSP follow? We can't just go in and like being on a table and say we did this. And that's it. You know when people believe him. There's a process and there's a chain of command that he has to follow and you know in isolation doing all that not really having an avenue to express yourself except to your boss an inevitably you know kind of comes out but then he kind of has to walk it back. It's all. It's all things that were fun to play or where you think about you. Know like the big themes of the movie with marriage story you. I don't try to think about it you to try to just find the humanity in seems that you're shooting and then hopefully like those are playable actions to play a guy who says desk a lot you you know it's a writer and people will come by and say can we watch you. Do this really bore order dropping the blackboard and yet there's so much tension movie and again it's tasking an audience to pay attention and then rewards it so good on you pick those two things to do. Well I mean I mean I was lucky to be involved in both of those things you know. Scott and and nowhere to people that were you know they they. It came both of them came from an urgency. So I'm I'm well. I had nothing much to do with it when I was thinking about those three movies that you happen to be in Star Wars. It's this big size giant movie. You just as comfortable doing that as you are

Popcorn with Peter Travers
An Interview with Jamie Bell of 'Skin'
"His popcorn where I tell you what's happening at the movies and I'm going to tell you about a movie called skin. Today you already know about a movie called rocket man. They both starred my guest Jamie Bow. I don't know when you have time your new father again. GotTa hang out with your kid true. <hes> I'm not working right now. Okay so it's all good. It's all good now. We can see by this with skin in the poster and this is a true story. I knew nothing about the story you know when I whenever the script the first time time you know as a movie that <hes> <hes> with with everything that was going on the news it was quite an century was a movie that felt very urgent yeah exactly and I felt like it. It Sean a light on something that <hes> I think ordinarily we could choose to ignore and I think any kind of normalization of this is dangerous. <hes> there's obviously a redemptive element to this and no as the phone kind of tying things up in a nice boat because life isn't like that right but we'll tell us a little bit though for those people that don't that you're playing somebody who decides basically the PAT. He took as a white supremacist is not the way he should go and how basically you get rid of that. I really love how literally he tries to get rid of that ink that stuff on his. Let's get to do it but it's a way to dramatize what he's doing what he's ripping off. I mean like the Brian wine was a career <hes> Neo Nazi that worries when when we first meet him he's completely linked up from that to <hes> and he's the way the journey the characters very much one of an unconscious man who comes to an awakening <hes> <hes> he he realizes the choices he has made a bad ones. He meets this woman who changes his life forever. She has these beautiful goes. He becomes obsessed with and he tries to get himself fat which for a lot of people who try and do that has a lot of very grave consequences but it's difficult. I think for these people to leave the ideology so strong <hes> there's almost kind of <hes> this <hes> almost an addictive quality to to to the to the families that they're in into these groups that are in most of these people are very very wayward within get involved with this <hes>. Suddenly you belong should they have. They have a <hes>. They feel like that. There's a pat on the back and there's a kind of a good job. <hes> <hes> said by somebody so <hes> yeah this. Is this the real hero the stories this guy called Daryl Lamont Jenkins. He worked for the one people's project. He is literally the people out in the street opposing these people and he can spot the good in some of these people in with an amazing sense of compassion reach out to them and and and say you know I can get you out of this if you're willing and he does US and through two years of Surgery Brian is given a gift. It's all removed from his face and and he has the potential to change his life and start again. Well we watch the movie and we can by watching the movie and watching your performance and watching how it's done put ourselves in that position kid but it's hard in the beginning with it hard for you when they said. Would you play this guy he I think so I was kind of a kind of moral see-saw for me. I like the first time I talked to the real. Brian was the dish Charlottesville for example. I remember ending that conversation with him and calling the director immediately after thinking <hes>. I don't think this is a good idea. I think this is some uh-huh feels the wrong time to tell the story <hes> also filmmaker by the way is Israeli filmmaker <hes> <hes> his yeah exactly his family went through the atrocities of the Holocaust. I'm so for him to want to tell the story and have that unique sense of compassionate <hes> that extension of kindness. I thought it was quite interesting. <hes> uh-huh and again you know when I would walk around <hes> the small town of Kingston was shot this film it would have been covered in tattoos and human nature is to usually ignore the monster next they don't. WanNa look at things that are challenging in any way or scary yeah. They look and I feel like that if we do that as a culture that's dangerous because we can radically normalize. These kinds of people and I think that's very dangerous so hopefully this film. If nothing else is going to wake up call we don't see him in a really good light in the beginning. No no no no and we're basically seeing somebody where you do. WanNa look away not just because of the tattoos you WanNa look away because you're thinking this is reprehensible bowl. What's your he's a character. In initially who is completely detached from <hes> empathy he's detached from compassionate and love from kindness <hes> he's. He's literally I think he's Com- completely lost touch with his ideology even means he's in a drunken stupor most of the time <hes> and he's he's indoctrinated by these people. I mean the the ideology that this group follow is based in kind of Viking Odin mythology which is about bloodlines and just complete nonsense so <hes> sure it was about that character finding something in this <hes> Julie Character Daniel McDonald placed finding some sense of stability and finding that there are these chasms of empathy Kathy that he has and tenderness and <hes> and suddenly that coming to the surface is a family that is kind of ready made for him knocked his family and he begins to see a bigger world through them and she's really good. She's an incredible downtown yeah yeah. That's quite remarkable. You see that through this movie I mean the performances are all spectacular that people are giving especially when you see veer for Migo Goer Bill camp or people play that people you really don't yeah I mean I gotta say especially with some like very much of that was kind of unscripted and she really just turned up and we didn't have much prep time with her at all and she just came in doing this wonderful. Three dimensional fully realized character that was really a scary to all of us the places she was phenomenal whenever I felt like literally terrified and I was meant to be the one that was scary which is great eight but it was it was a hardship I think for all of us. We all knew what was in the headlines. We all knew the kind of will that we were living in and and now important this was to portray these people the way they are and I think what about this menu playing. What was your relationship with him complicated <hes> purely because of the things he's done you know I i.? I'm someone who finds forgiveness quite difficult to come by. You know <hes>. I really liked to hold people accountable for their actions. <HES> I go meet with them. He's in the witness protection program and I spent like a week just kind of chatting to him and mostly talking about <hes> with them about stuff that wasn't in the script his childhood and <hes> you know <hes> what it's early life was like <hes> he's the other thing about him as if if you didn't know that he wants look like that. I mean ee you would have no idea that he was once covered in from I mean he has been given a gift. He's been given a new lease on life but he's an extremely paranoid person. He lives in constant fear. He's he lives in constant reckoning and that that's what he has to atone for for the things. He's <hes> things he's done. The great thing that you literally do and that we see in this is that we see somebody removed food than ink and then we wonder that gone you could take it away goes but what has to come away has to come from here and from here as well. That's only proven through action. That's only proven to <hes> but I think certainly right now. I think it's worthwhile question to ask how much compassionate we have and how far does that go and in the hope and this movie for me is that there really is <hes> the kindness of strangers people like. Dr Lamont Jenkins who might call to pleasants phone is solely responsible for getting mad at this movement you know <hes> the the money and the funds that were provided for surgery provided by an anonymous donor <hes> you know if anything that's the hope of the the move me is that there are there are human beings out there willing to extend this compassion and to say I'll. I'll extend myself if you do but you do that as an actor right when you're putting on somebody's skin no matter what part you're playing whether there's any disguise into what do what made you do this. I mean I know Billy Elliot. It is the beginning and Billy Elliot is a lot like you yeah well. He that movie exactly like me yeah. I mean anything. All of this show the old. You said yes sure it was a time when a film set for me that movie <hes> I remember being very overwhelming like God circus really did come to town and now the cameras pointing at me and this is very extreme and just really trusting got like I had no idea what I was doing this film and the decision to make this <hes> was one about really challenging myself and seeing <hes>. Is it possible to completely transform myself to degree. I'd never done before for <hes> and it was still challenging. Thing that is one of the most challenging things for me was was not holding the character in any form of judgement. That's what they always say like. ECON judge yes you difficult the circumstances of course <hes> it was important that I met him and introduced myself and everything else but then also just that that level of detachment that the character has and the reason I bring up Billy Elliot in addition to being such a seminal thing for you and what was happening to you is that you're bringing brought. Brought up this way you you've got a sister who's a dancer. You know this is. This is so much like you and yet. There's all these cameras around. I'm sure you're saying what what what my way through that movie for the first time you know but I think also me. I'd never met my father before <hes> the relationship that billy has with his father in that film is very challenging. Certainly this is a character who certainly lacked male presents a male role model and that guidance and that leadership that is looking for Elton John when he saw Billy Elliot and Ken wept he was weeping when I met him when supposedly easy in the movie version before he writes the kid when you're a kid yes exactly he's weeping. He's weeping because he his own a father <hes> he's he's passed but <hes> <hes> as if you've seen we have very good relations with his own sexuality and everything else and I think the most heartbreaking thing for him was that he never showed up to one of the show's not one so I think when Billy's father tons up into that film and tons up for his son and ED performing with the Royal Ballet School I think that really destroyed him but you know that the looking up to people in having examples and they're so crucial crucial is so important you know <hes> in this instance maybe Brian his life would have done it differently. What happens now after you meet l.. Well John Again and you're playing burnt-out movie. It's like really weird. I don't know what the next connection is very strange because obviously did the musical <hes>. Lee Hall who wrote wrote the musical euro rocket man. There's a kind of cosmic tethers to this <music> <hes> and I love that as top in it which is again antithesis to this character is such a loving supportive accepting human being and such a loyal oil friend <hes> it was really nice after doing this which is quite an unpleasant experience <hes> <hes> to play a character like that. That was just someone who so I'm lovely. So is that made you have years and years of therapy are have you been living sort of relatively normal life. I mean I would. I hope relatively normal. It seems relatively normal to me. <hes> you know I mean I think it's all relative experience but I think you know works for me is a real form of therapy. Get to play some characters from lots of different places in different walks of life and <hes> <hes> that to me is very interesting. I get to meet all the people that I'm playing most of the time with US revolutionary <hes> he's he's long since passed. Even people P turn. I did a phone call. Film Stars don't die in Liverpool with Annette Benning. He was around. He was extremely useful. Extremely love the guy to hang out with.

Popcorn with Peter Travers
Tony Awards Preview
"Hi, everybody. It's Peter Travers than welcome to our special popcorn Tony award show. Now, I've gotta say, before we get into the nominees about who will win and who should win. This is been the most amazing year in Broadway history. It has made over two billion dollars at the box office that never happened. And why is it? I think it's Hollywood heat everybody from TV from movies from us. It wants to be on Broadway. They wanna be on that stage. You got this year. Kylo Ren and driver on Broadway. You have Walter, white Bryan, Cranston, there, Jeff Daniels who played Harry done in too, dumb and dumber movies. They're all fighting to be best, dramatic actor, what kind of stuff is happening on Broadway. Well, let's start with the major categories, and I'm gonna start with best musical the nominees are ain't too, proud the life and times of the temptations Beetlejuice remember that movie Haiti's town, the prom, and Tootsie. You remember that movie too? Well. I think the winner is Haiti's town. It's a rigid. It's basically the myth of Orpheus ritzy, but it's got a score by a woman named Naess Mitchell who doesn't come from Broadway, at all and kind of revolutionizes it. So what would happen what could spoil the fun? There's a little musical called the prom. It's really it's totally original. It's about these bunch of Broadway veterans, and they're really hard bitten, and they're not getting any press, and they decide to go to Indiana and help, a lesbian high school student take her girlfriend to the prom. That's it. How good is it? It's really good. And in terms of the Hollywood connection, Ryan Murphy, went to see it fell in love with it, and he's making a movie of it. So how about that? Then we have best play the Ferryman choirboy, Gary a sequel to Titus andronicus. What the constitution means to me an ink. I'm telling you people, the Ferryman is got to be a movie soon. It's an Irish play. It's about the troubles, and in on a stage. We get to see an entire family deal with violence deal with their own feuds. We've got babies onstage. We've got live alive goose. We have everything there's nothing like I don't think there's any competition for it at all except there was a snub, the most successful play in Broadway history. That's not a musical is to kill among bird, and for some reason, the Tony nominee said, let's not nominated what I want. Answer on that one best revival of a play. Arthur, Miller's all my sons the boys in the band, burn this torch song and the Waverley gallery. I think Arthur Miller's all my sons which brought a net. Bending back to Broadway is a show that he wrote in one thousand nine hundred forty seven a bout a guy who was manufacturing airplane, parts and was to rush to do it. And so the planes crashed and killed pilots during the war. We live in the world of Boeing. Now, how timely could this be? So I think that's really up there. And I in terms of seeing a show that by playwright Arthur Miller who says, let's deal with the world we live in this one really, really did it then we have bible of musical. This is easy, because there's only two there's Oklahoma Rogers and Hammerstein Oklahoma and kiss me. Kate. Of course, they were both movies. We saw Oklahoma with Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones in the fifties. But kiss me, Kate is done in a traditional way. Kelli o'hara's in it, Oklahoma is directed by guide named Daniel fish who find darkness. We're Rogers and Hammerstein only found light. It's a revelation to watch this. It's not the Oklahoma you've ever remembered, and it sung in the kind of country western way, look, if you ever get to see this on Broadway or win a tours get there get there quick. Okay. Okay. Best actor in a musical. And so, we'll do alphabetically Brooks as Mantas in the prom, Derrick Baskin and ain't too, proud the life and times of the temptations Alex Brightman and Beetlejuice. Remember when Michael Keaton had their part, Damon down, oh in Rogers and Hammerstein, Oklahoma. And send Tino fun Tanna into okay? The favorite is Tino, Tanna who is playing the part that destined Hoffman immortalized in the movie in the nineteen eighties. But what Centeno Tanna doesn't remember him on TV in crazy ex girlfriend like I'm saying everybody's from TV, or he does so much more. He sings as a man sees a woman, he does physical comedy does everything but stand on his hat. And I say, you know, who's out there that can spoil the win for Santino Tanna. And my answer is no one because this is one of the great performances you'll ever see on a musical, comedy stage. He's the winner. Best actress in a play Benning in Arthur, Miller's all my sons, Laura, Donnelly, in the Ferryman. Elaine may in the Waverley gallery, Janet mcteer in Bernhardt hamlet, Laurie Metcalf in Hillary Clinton, and Heidi Shreck in what the constitution means to me. Okay. Elaine may doesn't win this Tony. You're going to hear from me. She's eighty seven years old. She's returned to Broadway. After decades to play the part of a woman fighting Alzheimer's, and everything is no perfect about what she's done. She started with Mike Nichols doing comedy. She was starring in movies of like the new leaf directed things like the heartbreak kid. She's just one of the best actors I've ever seen anywhere. And if she loses and, you know, I feel bad for an bending because if Elaine may wasn't here this year, I think she would be the winner, but come on. Attention must be paid people. And I also wanna talk about a snub how. How does Glenda Jackson who won the Tony last year for three women returned to Broadway as King Lear? We talk about the age of hashtag metoo and time's up Glenda. Jackson is playing king. Lear gets rave reviews and the Tony committee says we're not gonna nominate her now. No, we're paying attention. And we're gonna come back and get you our best actress in a musical. Stephanie, j block in the share show Caitlyn Kanoun in the prom Beth level, in the prom, Eva nobles, ADA in Haiti's town, and Kelley O'Hara and kiss me cake. Stephanie j block who is that theater veteran is playing share in a way that sometimes she's more share than share. You might think this is just an escapist show thing to know she finds the character of who she is share shows up at this show often does numbers with her, and pus share. There's who's a bigger Hollywood. Name who is coming to Broadway with the show about herself. It takes three actresses to play here. But Stephanie j block plays the central one. And she plays the hell out of it. So she has just got to win. I'm sorry, people. All right. Best featured actress in a play for new of Flanagan in the Ferryman seal, you keep. And Bolger into kill a Mockingbird. Christine Nelson, Gary a sequel to Titus andronicus Julie white and Gary sequel to Titus andronicus and Ruth Wilson and King Lear people if you see if you see to kill among bird, and you should seal, you Keenan Bolger is very controversial because she's playing scout scout in the book and in the movie remember is in eight or nine year old girl. A C Keenan Bolger is in her forties. And yet, what she finds in this character who grew up to be Harper who wrote this novel is the heart and soul of the peace. So I'm telling you people this, this has got to happen. See Keenan Bolger remember that name best featured actor in a play birdie Carville and ink, Robin to hasten boys in the band getting Glick into kill a monkey bird, Brandon your Ranna wits in burn this Benjamin Walker in Arthur Miller's. All my sons birdie, Carville in ink. Those of us, those of you who actually went to Broadway couple of years ago and saw of any kind of a musical where you were shocked at a man playing a woman, you saw birdie, Carville in Matilda, and he played this woman, this horrible headmistress, and now he's playing Rupert Murdoch. So every who in Hollywood, who in politics would anyone hasn't been in an Rupert Murdoch publication or paper and who hasn't been rolled over the coals in it that performance and in London when he played it in one and Olivia ward, he had to play it in front of Rupert Murdoch. It's just an incredible job. I wanna talk a little about the snubs in this category. The non nominees there isn't actor named Bengal Arghanab into Killa mugging bird who plays Tom Robinson. He is the black man who is on trial for raping a white woman, a crime never committed. And he's defended. By Jeff Daniels. Atticus Finch when Aaron Sorkin adapted Harper Lee's novel to the stage. He did it so that he could expand the role of the black characters as he did here. And again, the Tony committee, decided only to nominate the white actors from tequila, Mockingbird ignoring the two black actors who are just brilliant in their roles. You people you're going to get called on the carpet. You need to all right? Best featured actress in a musical, Lilli Cooper in Tootsie, amber, gray and Haiti's town Sarah, styles Tootsie, alley stroke, or in Rogers and Hammerstein Oklahoma and Mary, Testa in Rogers, and Hammerstein Oklahoma there, something totally remarkable that happened this year in stroke, and Oklahoma. This is a woman who when she was two years old was in an automobile crash, and was never able to walk again. And now on Broadway playing eight oh Anne who is like the sexual. Time bomb in Oklahoma, the one who sings, I can't say, no, the part went to Allie. Stroke, she plays it in a wheelchair and you would think that's inspiring enough. But when you watch her play at you, forget the wheelchair exists, and you're watching her take over the stage like Dolly Parton. She, it's just an amazing thing to watch and it works on so many levels. So I wanna be there when she wins that Tony, and I want to be standing up and applauding and going Bravo. She deserves all right. Best featured actor in a musical Andre shields in Haiti town and a groups Luccin. That's a good name into Patrick page in Haiti's town germy, pope in into proud the life and times of the temptations and Ephraim Sykes ain't too, proud the life and times of the temptations, the favorite, the one, I think will win is under the shields and Haiti's town. He's seventy three years old. He stands on that stage is the narrator in like a silver suit. In total control of body and every movement and pulls you in till you're memorized. Your mesmerizing you not take your eyes off of hundred shields. This is a veteran actor who needs to get this Tony. But what if he didn't who would go to there's a young actor named Jeremy pope who plays Eddie kendricks in the into proud the life and times of the temptations? And who does he's playing a difficult man. One of the most difficult of the temptations. But one of the most talented as well. He's also nominated this year as best actor in a in a play in choir, boy, this is to me, the brightest newcomer that you will see on the stage and you're going to see him everywhere, stage movies television. It's just the beginning. So if you get to see this, you're going to be able to tell your friends, I was there win. Okay. Best director of a play Rupert Gould for Inc. Sam Mendes for the Ferryman Bartlett. Fair for to kill a mocking bird Ivo von Hosver for network, and George C Wolfer Gary a sequel to Titus andronicus Sam Mendis in the Ferryman this play. Does a job on stage that equal to his first movie which was American Beauty, which you may remember won the best picture? Oscar and once Mendis the Oscar as best director.

Annette Bening and Laurie Metcalf nominees for 2019 Tony Awards
"Great news also for an Benning as we mentioned he's being nominated full. All my sons. I'm actually fortunately for me Sally field in that same role tonight. He in London Laurie Metcalf though, four nominations in four years. Yeah. The New York Times recently, Chris and Laurie Metcalf, the first lady of Broadway, and I think actually people believe that it's not just hype she has had huge success on television, as we know and onscreen lady bird for which he was nominated for an Oscar. She was wonderful. But her heart really belongs to the theater as she is the first tell anyone she's already announced next season. She'll return to Broadway in one of the most iconic of all plays Virginia Woolf assuming she gets nominated for an who Tony for that. And I don't see why she shouldn't be that would be five nominations and five years, and she just seems to want to do theatre do I mean who's afraid of wolf anyone who's unaware is one of those options that if you are an actor, and you get to being this role of like the play version of gypsy isn't an yet to play this role and you'll good sure to be nominated for every would under the sun. So good news fil Hori. It seems.
