"benintendi" Discussed on The Bill Simmons Podcast

"Three and a half years ago, the Red Sox traded Mookie Betts, who is the best everyday player of either of our lifetimes who have played for the Red Sox franchise. The trade predictably couldn't have gone worse. The last couple of years of the Red Sox could not have gone worse. Today, they fired their GM, Hyne Bloom, and who drafted pretty well, I guess if you're gonna go on the pros of the pro-con list of the Hyne Bloom era. The cons are pretty much everything else. One of the worst GMs of our lifetime, I don't know for Boston sports, I don't know if he's number one, but I think he's in like the eight-man conversation, right? Well, the good news is for us, since the Red Sox get rid of the greatest player of his generation every hundred years, we won't be alive for the next one. It's so nice that we will be dead and won't have to see the Red Sox. I mean, Mookie Betts, and as obviously you and I live in Los Angeles, we go to Dodger Stadium, we love him almost as much as we did when he was in Boston. And what's weird about time is that this will be his headline, right? This will be his hairy, phrasey, Babe Ruth headline, but probably a decision that he did not make unilaterally, right? So he'll get blamed in his baseball obit for losing the greatest player of his generation or shipping out the greatest player of his generation. But to me, as I was just going through, it's the small-bore decisions that he did have control over that were also awful. So the big stuff was terrible. I mean, you and I immediately, I wasn't a Trevor Story expert, and then I went immediately, I'm like, 191 strikeouts, 174 strikeouts? I'm looking at these strikeout numbers, I'm like, he doesn't hit the ball, but he plays in Colorado, so when he does hit the ball, his balls and play numbers are gonna be inflated in Colorado, so he's gonna miss the ball a bunch, and when he hits it, he's not gonna be in Colorado anymore. I'm like, immediately, you and I were like, this is a terrible contract. In a weird way, the injury- Wait a second. You left out the part where he was available because nobody wanted to sign him because they were worried about Osobo, which we thought was a major red flag, where they're like, no, they think it should be okay, and then he starts playing for the Red Sox, and they're like, well, he's having trouble throwing, but it should be okay, and we're like, what is this? No, I mean, the Trevor story signing, it's like, there are two ways this could go wrong, if he's hurt or if he's not hurt, which is just a terrible signing, but like, and again, Andrew Benintendi, the point of a general manager is like, buy low, sell high, improve your organization. With every move, try to improve your organization a little bit, Benintendi was the rookie of the year runner-up in 2017 after hitting a playoff home run in 2016. In 2018, he has a great season, 4.8 war, 8.30 OPS, a signature, maybe the best defensive play to end a playoff series that comes to mind, and then 2019, he regresses a little bit, but then COVID hits, and he gets 39 at-bats in 2020, and they sell as low as possible on a guy. So it's like, Franchee Cordero's not a major league player, and Josh Wienckowski, maybe a slightly above average middle reliever, didn't look at when he lost to the Yankees on Tuesday, but time and time again, hey, Hunter Renfrow's a serviceable right fielder with power, let's trade him to get JBJ back who can't play in the big leagues, like over and over and over. You left out, and it costs more money to head the JBJ contract. There was stuff where it's almost seemed like he didn't have the figures for the contracts. There was stuff where- Is it bad when you're talking about a terrible tenure and your buddy goes, oh, and you left out? There's so much that you're like, yeah, there's no way you can keep it all straight. Brian Barrett can't keep it all straight. He's a cyborg, and nobody can keep all the terrible decisions. By the way, this year, I forgot, because you forget, you're like, there's so much mismanagement. So the key thing you do at the deadline, your job is to go, are we a contender or not? Because there isn't a third answer. That's a binary thing for a general manager. And are you telling me that Lucas Giolito had value, but James Paxton had no value at the deadline? It's like, no, he just did nothing. He didn't come to work. He didn't do anything, which is not an option. You either look at your roster and go, we could win the World Series this year, and then you trade Marcel Omer. Or you go, we're not gonna win the World Series, and you trade James Paxton. So this thing of like, I'm just not gonna go to work, I'm not gonna, did you roll calls? What were the offers for James Paxton? So we get nothing for Paxton, a year after getting nothing for J.D. Martinez at the deadline. And it's like, you can't keep getting nothing at the deadline. And now we have an organization that can't catch the ball, can't pitch, can't run the bases. We're kind of a fun, slow pitch softball team. We're kind of fun at hitting the ball, but it's just in disarray. And look, you talk about drafting, and obviously you and I have a lot invested in Marcel Omer, which we chose him over Volpe in our league of dorks. And the fact is, he just hit 189 in AA, and his career trajectory right now is worse than Jeter Downs' was at the same age. So obviously I hope Marcelo gets healthy, I hope he's actually a shortstop, I hope, you know. But you know, so as a GM, you make these decisions based on whatever your process is, and then you get graded on how did that turn out. I mean, Jeter Downs' 2019 minor league season in no way suggested this guy will not be a major leaguer. But that's what you get graded on. Like, if you look at the numbers, you're like, that does look like a good guy to have in your organization, and then it just didn't work out. So time and time again, Bloom made decisions based on his, however, whatever his process is, and it's just like bad, bad, over and over again.

"Of years and kind of motivated to make some changes about so if you have a healthy season for him where he is able to be active for three, four months at a time, I think he emerges as kind of a very viable ethnic guy that makes you think about putting one of those other right handed relievers in the closer role at being pretty squared away, but so yeah, hi at him, I would say I've been unreasonably high on Jimmy Lambert, his entire career. But he's someone that they basically finally gave the ghost on trying to starting him last season because of the bullpen need the head and his metrics weren't the greatest he kind of held his own, but it's someone I've always felt like had four pitches that would work at a pretty kind of any setting and I think there are moments last year before maybe he dealt with some erratic stuff at the end of the season where it looked like somebody would be a vile or lever. So I think that gives them a little bit more medium leverage beyond just the names that are known before you start talking about more of the camp flyers or the rule 5 pick that the Niko villa who might make the team and maybe guys that you're not as comfortable as elevating the high leverage. But I think they have four or 5 guys in there that generally they're comfortable going with a lady in a situation without Hendrix. So I guess the big positional questions would be second base and right field rate and they've been questions for a while. The White Sox have the worst second base projection of any team. They have the second worst right field projection of any team and they had one of the least productive outfields and most defensively limited outfields in baseball last season. To the mix and you're getting some of the more defensively limited guys out of the outfield. There's Oscar colossus. There's Gavin sheets, is there going to be some sort of acquisition still at either of these positions and if not how do you see them shaking out? Everything's pretty clear for the idea that Oscar koalas is going to take over as the starting right Fielder as soon as possible and certainly long term. That was pretty much a messaging from the GM meeting set. They were not going to go out and get a right Fielder, but basically clear the way for coalesce. I think if you struggles, or if there are certain match ups they like, even though they're both left handed, you might see cabbage sheets doing a little bit of right field or I certainly think against left handers they could match up where they sit colas and put alloy out there for his day or two in right field, but it's pretty much banked on the idea that coal is major league ready and could be kind of a probably more power over hit, especially as a rookie, but someone who obviously can defend the position and it's more of a natural outfielder than any other candidate they've had out there for a couple of years now. At second base, they have been kind of, it's definitely been the place where they've been more active in trade talks and rickon definitely indicated that the door is not closed in that entirely at any point, but it gets certainly less likely as the season draws here and they've been slowly popping up as the person that they would, you know, he spent, I feel like half of this coaching staff under a pedigree follows off from Miami. So Romain Gonzales out there, he worked with their new field coordinator Mike toes are all winter. He's someone they've been. They kind of gave a strange amount of heavy plane time to when they were still fighting for their playoff spot. Last year, even when they sell at Josh Harrison, it's someone they kind of believe in, even though last season was very much a wash and at this point his major league statistics look like somebody who has a lot of plate discipline issues and we'll have trouble getting on base. This is kind of the organizationally they've kind of searched for power whenever they can find it and after he had kind of his breakout 20 or 21 season where he showed like this 2020 power and speed combination that they've been optimistic on, it seems like they're in a position right now to more or less hand on the second base job with Lenin Sosa kind of heavy outside chance of resting away with the big spring training. I don't want to give short shrift to arguably their largest off season edition not in terms of his stature, but in terms of the size and length of his contract, which is Andrew benintendi, and I'm curious, how did they settle on Ben Andy as their guy? Because it's not that he had a bad season last year, you know, at least at the plate he had his highest WRC plus since that really great 2018 campaign with Boston, but like the defense seems like it's slipping and there's never been a ton of power, but he does get on base at a good clip. He got more money than I anticipated him getting and not just because everyone seemed to get more money than I anticipated them getting in this off season. So how'd they land on Ben and tendi and what are they? What are they expecting out of him? I mean, you say settling on Ben attende. I would say completing when was he drafted? 2015. So 8 years of thirsting after him. He was taking one spot ahead of Carson fulmer and they were definitely kind of waiting for him to maybe dangle down. I don't think it's the right verb. But moving on. They wanted him in the Chris sale trade way back when, you know, late 2016, talked about him at the deadline last year. This is someone they've kind of lusted after, which, again, does not feel like a good person. This is someone they want it for a long time. Definitely believe in his skill set beyond just, you know, professional singles hitter. They think his power will probably play a little bit better. Sure. At a sneaky great park for lift handed power, which you wouldn't know because of white sacks haven't really had much. Rhett more than to play the coffin stadium. They're absolutely the number of times I've heard Andrew Ben and senator referred to as a gold love left Fielder, since he signed, would lead me to believe that they view him as bit rosier than someone who's defenses is slipping based on some metrics of recent. This is someone they view as kind of like this really good overall null player. I would say he got more years than I expected more than maybe the AAV. That's really how they're able to separate their offer from the Yankees and also not go over a big AAV since they did a lot of work talking about how little budget room they had going into the off season. So I think it kind of threaded the needle for them a little bit of they didn't have to give this is what somebody had to give 20, $25 million a year or two. But he was young enough that maybe you don't feel as queasy as giving him 5 seasons. This is someone they view as like the do everything good at everything type of guy. He's not a stud power here. He's not necessarily someone that you thought is going to hit compete for the Benny tenant island. Maybe a two 82 90 projection is more reasonable take for him, but if you miss not having a major weakness and if there's something that's been an issue for White Sox position players, especially when they're being thrown out to play left field when they're first baseman or it's that they have some kind of clearing weakness that makes their strengths kind of get canceled out

A wildfire in Northern California has destroyed dozens of homes in the town of weed, the Sacramento bee says the mill fire had grown to over 4200 acres by Saturday night and is now 25% contained, weed mayor Kim green says most of the damage was in the historically black neighborhood of Lincoln heights, where about 100 homes were destroyed, Cal fire officials say a second wildfire is also burning in the area, the mountain fire is burning north of weed. Now this Bloomberg sports update, let's start with baseball, not a winning night for the Yankees or the mets on Saturday Max Scherzer starting for the mets in their game at city field against the nationals. He went 5 innings, but exited the game at that point with left side fatigue. And eventually, it all caved in on the mets as the nationals cash in with 5 runs in the top of the 9th inning and they win going away 7 to one. So that is not a good finish for the mets. They'll continue the series at Citi Field on Sunday, even worse news for the Yankees. They lose in Tampa to the raise and the only hit that mattered was Aaron judge with a 9th inning solo home run. That's his 52nd home run of the year, but it was a two to one Tampa win as Corey Kluber shut down the Yankees with 7 shutout innings and so a nice win for the race. The Yankees have now seen their lead in the American League east shrink from 15 and a half games down to four. They've lost 6 of their last 7 and so the Yankees continue to struggle and they also make the move on Andrew benintendi and place him on the ten day injured list. He's got right wrist inflammation that happened in Friday's game in Tampa. "Bloomberg markets, our guests know where to get the answers. Just to put a good word in for Bloomberg, one of the few systems you can easily use to figure it out is right in front of you. Inside. Analysis. In the best from the Bloomberg terminal. The Bloomberg terminal is like a Ducati Panigale. I can extract maybe 5 to 6% of its total. I don't think you're even close. I think it's like sitting on top of a Saturn B 5. Bloomberg markets with Paul Sweeney and met Miller, weekday mornings at ten eastern on Bloomberg radio. The IRS is admitting it published private taxpayer information. Julie Ryan has the very latest. It made the admission on Friday and said it affected about 120,000 individuals, names and income from certain investments were on its website for a year. Despite that, lawmakers were told no social security numbers or individual income information was included in the exposure. I'm Julie Ryan. And a top ally of former president Trump isn't on board with his idea to pardon those who took part in last year's capitol riot, speaking to CNBC, senator Lindsey Graham said, pardoning the rioters, quote, seems to reinforce the narrative that it's okay. The remark from the South Carolina Republican came after Trump said he would pardon those who were at the capitol on January 6th of last year, he told a conservative radio host, the pardons would come with a government apology. The promise from Trump comes as he's looking to make another run for The White House in 2024. I'm Jim Forbes. Well, the Yankees stumbled their way out of the month of August and they are stumbling their way into the month of September. They've now lost 6 of their last 7 games Saturday was a two one loss to the raise in Tampa. The only big hit was an Aaron judge solo home run his 52nd of the year, but too little too late. Final score two to one, their lead has shrunk down to four games in the American League east. So things continue to look dire for the Yankees. Also, they placed outfielder Andrew benintendi on the ten day injured list. He has got a right wrist inflammation that activated itself on Friday in Tampa. Things were not a whole lot better for the mets at city field as Max Scherzer left the game after 5 innings with left side fatigue. The game was pretty close at that point, but then the nationals jump in with 5 runs in the top of the 9th and they end up getting out with a 7 to one win, the 5 innings pitched was a season low for Scherzer. He's been reliable all season long, but not so much on Saturday. So the mets end up losing that game to the nationals. In tennis, it was day 6 of the U.S. open, no real big upsets with Rafael Nadal and iges fiance advancing with straight set wins. Also Jessica was a three set winner Cameron nori and Carlos alcaraz all advanced. Saturday was the first big day of college football everywhere. Number three, Georgia beat number 11 Oregon 49 to three number two Ohio State beat number 5 Notre-Dame 21 to ten and the other game involving top 25 teams, 19th ranked Arkansas beats number 23 Cincinnati, 31 to 24. I'm Barry Rudolph, you're listening to masters and business on Bloomberg radio, my extra special guest this week is Lin Martin. She is the president of the world's largest stock exchange, the NYSE, they host 2400 listed companies with a market cap somewhere in the neighborhood of $36 trillion, doing more than a billion shares on a good day. That sounds like a pretty complex situation just to begin with, what's it like managing something with so many moving parts? There are a lot of moving parts up because I'm a technologist. I feel really good about the service that we provide. One of the first things when I hopped into this role in January, unsurprisingly, that I focused on was system capacity. And thinking about what's our average response times what sort of capacity do we have in the system to handle peak days? I'm glad I did that because a couple of weeks after that, we had tremendous volatility, the week of January 24th, 25th around then. Which is pretty funny because the prior year was almost no volatility. It was the widest year in a long time. It started to see it a bit in December. So we saw the signs in December that volatility was starting to creep into the market. But we hadn't seen that to your point. You know, really since the pandemic. The way we look at capacity is incoming order messages. For those listening and coming order messages as bias coming into the system, cells coming into the system trades. Very quickly, we started to see days that were in excess of 20% above pandemic levels from a messaging standpoint and equated to half a trillion messages every day. Half a trillion. And by messages, it's by selling trade, which is tremendous. And the fact that we were processing those with average response times in the stocks of about 30 microseconds micro not micro. That's incredibly quick. Incredible. And that really has continued. It's been something I've had my eye on throughout the year, but our technologists have done a great job. We've recently upgraded our systems to our next generation matching engine technology and

"5 35 on Wall Street John has a Bloomberg sports update. All right, Nathan, first subway series game of the season, usually not this late and normally not with both teams in first place. The mets and Yankees played tonight and tomorrow at city field, then twice the next month in The Bronx tonight it's Jordan Montgomery against Taiwan walker. Last night, the Phillies down three zero came back beat Atlanta 6 four Bryson stock game winning three run home in the 8th inning for the mets, lead the braves by two, the Yankees leave the Astros by two on the race for best overall record Houston lost in Oakland much needed win for the Red Sox. They lost 5 in a row had allowed 67 runs in those 5. They beat Cleveland three to one at Fenway. The baseball trade deadline in one week both the mets and Yankees believed to be in talks with Washington about acquiring Juan Soto that would certainly be a blockbuster. Yankees GM Brian cashman told the yes network. He's always looking to make any move necessary. "How many times can you name the yankees How many games can you recall where they had a lead. In the ninth at fenway park recently recent history and lost only recent history. You got this one last night. Three one pretty bad very bad. Twenty seventeen year old is chapman walked the bases-loaded and blew a one run lead and they eventually got walked up. Andrew benintendi remember that very clearly 2016. They blew like a four nothing lead in its anarchist start and hanley. Ramirez walked off with a three run home. Run to dead center field. That happened two thousand eighteen. The three run lead in the ninth mcginlay do it with the throwing error the it and then eventually they got walked off. Of course they did. I mean that's four since two thousand sixteen fairly confident. That's not all of them didn't happen last year. There were no fans. Gary sanchez actually came back. In the ninth against the red sox. That was nice It's at least one a year. It's a kind of lost that should maybe occur in this rivalry once every five or six years

"There is no outward expression there's the celebrations or even week like you walk off. You can say how many times we see cross. Mlb there's players getting their shirt. Rip off run to the ground. I mean if they throw somebody to the ground with the yankees though productivity Yet don't do that. Don't do that. But i mean it's just it's just so limp. Everything about it is limp. It's just nobody's excited The you know what the approaches the approach never changes And here we are. And i think it could. I don't know if the the change voice could be needed in the dugout could be needed in the front office because we know that a lot of the information is being relayed from the front office to the dugout so maybe that flow of information can change. How aaron boone is doing his job. Or how. Aaron boone motivates players are. How arab boone approaches the game. I don't know. I wish i knew but something does need to be changed. But probably before the all star break if this can if they're still hovering around five hundred ball because now this is this is a this eighty-six six team i guess if we're combining the last The last hundred sixty two games or at least a trend of the last one hundred sixty two games. And that's just that's that's unacceptable for for what we built here. Yeah i just can't imagine. I just can't imagine that people are entering the locker room feeling like their skills are being maximized. Feeling like they're being spoken to feeling like they have any idea how to translate what they're learning to the field. Because you know every day is the exact same. And i know the yankees. Coaching staff is not preaching failure. So there's a disconnect like i i wish there seems like there's something toxic in the locker room i don't know what it is but this is one of the most jarring disappointments in in in recent baseball history. I think that's fair to say that they they added garrett cole and got much much worse what happened they. They took a team that was injury ravaged in two thousand nineteen and made it to game. Six the cs. Maybe a different break goes their way. And they could've one that series if they have my talk men instead of cameron may been if giancarlo stanton doesn't get mysteriously hurting game. One it sarah. They are really close to the world series in twenty nine team with a non full-strength roster and they added garrett cole that team and since then they have been just over five hundred for a sixty game season and this seventy seven game slugfest. So i mean you lay it out at any better than that. Th- the rays have lost. Blake snell glass now for a long period of time their entire bullpen. Castio anderson they are nipping at. The red sox yields in the alleys. The red sox traded. Mookie betts laws benintendi loss. Chris sale lost. Jackie bradley jr. of their own volition. And by the way. I don't think of the yankees and rehired alex cora and traded mckee bets to save money that they would be comically rewarded guarantee the be comically punished. If they'd done that any who try. Not to rant about the red sox might doctor saying you gotta be better about that. So don't do that But the red sox have a ton of roster churn and they're better the raise a ton of roster churn and they're better..

"We don't need him and it's really you sure so. They called observers and you see him make routine errors in at third base because he wasn't ready and four years later here we are. So i'm i don't wanna get swept up but i'm optimistic. It's funny like if you pitch shifted what you just said and change the name system yankees like you. I also feel. I mean i had you have pre two thousand four like nervous anxiety. I post you four nervous anxiety disorder. I don't enjoy these games. Ever you were very connected all the time yes. It's knocking skittish constantly. I can't imagine attending one of these. Like that's also where i'm at someone's like you want to go to yankees jesus christ now. Of course i don't Definitely not at fenway. I promised you before. My i did promise you to tell you. The story of the time. I was chasing new fenway bathroom. The censored version is in two thousand twelve and the red sox were really not good and john lackey was mid tommy john rehab and was reviled player and not like a fan favorite. I bought a john. Lackey t shirt at the door for five dollars and wore it as my halloween costume. I was the chicken and beer. Red sox and then i wore it to a game at fenway that year and everything's going fine i don- people notice. I guess and then i was walking the aisles and some dude came up behind me and went john lackey and i just ignored kept walking and he goes john fucking lackey. Haw and i'm like all right. Alright writer and i went into the bathroom. And he's screaming and he's like john lackey and then you go in the bathroom standing on a toilet and also he not he goes john. Lackey wanted you my wife and then he left. I don't know what that means to this day. I don't know if you had a personal vendetta. Maybe john lackey like did try. I don't know situation was the most confusing moment. I've had it a ballpark. So you've asked me in the past like do you like i love anyway not that day. But i love fenway. i would never in my life. Ten yankee sox at fenway. And if you're wants to do that. God bless i don't really like attending oxy stadium. Either to be honest. I went to a game in two thousand nine hundred. That turned out well. Before that i went to the earliest sham endeavors. Game was the most recent yankee socks game. I went to the yankee stadium and i switched positions. I switched positions between the eighth and ninth inning. So i did that. I fully did that. That's my fault but yeah going into the series. You don't wanna get swept. I don't wanna get swept as long as the get swept. I will leave satisfied in the interim though like it's so basically we both want our teams to just win at least one game in the series of. That's that's what we wanted in the last series. Yes were sitting around the house. Just win one. I don't care what it is. Don't care when it happens win. One all i want to know. I'm getting greedy now though i want to. There's no reason game stadium in my life. it was may twenty nineteen. It was remember when andrew benintendi was the red sox leadoff hitter no legitimate reason for a solid two and a half months So i was at the game the first game back that mookie was leadoff man when core finally accepted what every fan had seen for the first two and a half months like this. I shouldn't be batting leadoff. It was like the beginning of benintendi collapsed. I take no pleasure in that. Like i felt so bad for him but it was like power. We still doing this. So i was at that game and i will say my in my experience was not as the i and get chased or anything but i will say on twitter leading up to that series. I had yankees fans like if we see you at fenway. We will be your head in. And i was like this seems really excessive. Like it's a sport. It's not like you're taking this really seriously. Nothing happened at the game. Obviously and your food is really good. But the one thing that i thought was really funny and i literally pulled up. The tweet is i had yankees fan. Sitting in front of us is june. I nineteen i tweeted.

"But i also think if you're going to get a compensation drastic. You're going to have to tender him next season. What are you going to get another rage and if you're not convinced that he's going to perform up to that level that you wanna pay that last year of arbitration or if you just think that they they also they make the case that trade value is so tied for years of control that you wait any longer. He even if he starts to have a bounceback that teams. Maybe we'll value even lower because they're getting fewer years out of him now. I find that a little bit hard to believe if that twenty six years old than intended. He has a great first three months. And i really think that has trade value would be higher than it is right now but again. I mean to do that. You'd have to have a really good three months. And based on what we've seen the last two years maybe that's not gonna happen So yeah it was a surprising trade for me I didn't because for the same reason you said i. I thought that you're better off. Hold onto him at this point value so low. He should hope for something better. But i you know. I think they're just trying to make some They're taking kind of a very practical approach to a lot of this. You know it's it's to stomach dent similar to like when they did trae. mookie like. It's a very practical idea. Look we tried years before to get on a team friendly extension. We think it's going to have to take top of the market value signing in the more practical move as disco. Look let's just guarantee ourselves or return here get three good young players in the dodgers and trade him And then the dodgers signed him for open market value like that. That's a very practical way to put it. If if you're if you're not wanting to spend that much money But it just you know the is it the right thing to do. I don't know but it is a very practical. Let's let's take the sure thing route here and Definitely get a return and that's kind of what they did with been in vendee like right now. We can get five young players for him. Let's do it and i read an article. Alex cora had some comments recently about benintendi. I guess doing his own workout program going into the twenty nineteen season without clearing it with the team. don't know if that had anything to do with his underperformance or if it had anything with him getting traded. I mean twenty. Nineteen is so long ago that i i don't know if that would impact things but there's alex cora never afraid to speak out. We'll get to alex. Cora returning in a minute but but does do you think that had anything to do with this trade or no. Maybe because he did he did. Come in the different player but also as i understood. This was a heimat. Heim was looking to trade benintendi. Ever since he came in that someone he thought was was going to be the right. Move even leading into twenty twenty. So and if he's feeling that came into the organization that means he wasn't necessarily here for when benintendi showed up in different shape than twenty nineteen right so maybe he just saw that from afar and made that decision. But i think i think it really had much more to do with you. Know a player. That's run out a team control and not a guy who you decided you wanna to commit to long term and so again you make the practical move of. Let's just trade him now I don't yeah. I don't know that it all to do like i don't think they were angry at benintendi for putting on weight that year. It's just that it didn't keep did what he thought he was. He thought he was doing the right thing. He clearly worked. He worked hard and he had done that in college. Frankly like he jumped his stock in the drafted sophomore year. And some of that was he. Got a lot stronger and at a much better year at arkansas was the number seven overall pick so you can see how it made sense to him. And i don't think they took it as like you know him being insubordinate i think it was just like oh that didn't work what we had planned here. You know they were. They want him to be a leadoff hitter. And i think benintendi thought he was going to be number three or four or five here and it. It doesn't take a genius to have predicted the alex cora return. I think you. And i talked about this on one of our one of our episodes last year that you were on that. It kind of seemed like the writing was on the welfare. Alex cora to come back because the red sox didn't fully name. I'm drawing a blank on his name. Who was who was the acting manager last year. Round rookie right yeah. They never actually named him like like manager right. He was always interim manager so we always knew that was going to be a temporary thing and then there was a new hire gonna come in and then alex cora comes in after the comes back after the cheating scandal. And how do you think this is a like. What kind of look do you think this is for the team because it. Oh it's almost a from an outsider's perspective. It's almost like well. We don't really care. Alex cora's a good manager like an. Aj hinch got a new job. He didn't get a job with the astros but he got another jar so this is just more examples in baseball of cheating. But also it's not that bad.

"And then they traded mookie betts and now it's not even know. Orange uses mouthwash and toothpaste now Just i understand why they did it. Obviously i'm disgusted by it. But like i i get points very easy to spend somebody else's money setting setting what doesn't make me feel any better. Seen him when the world series in dot for that was that was painful. You feel like the red sox are doing a pretty good job rebuilding the team right now. I mean last year was obviously not a good year but as a fan. Do you like the moves. They're making right now. Yes and no i understand. They're trying to do it on a budget. They're trying to get away with from the know from the excessive over the salary packs. Spending i get I think like. I just got a notification twenty minutes ago there in a three way. Trade talks with with the mets and the twins with benintendi involve I mean they're going to stay on budget and need to. They need to trade for for pieces. They can't just spend money and expect to produce. If it's going to be a rebuild. I get it but obviously i'm not happy with you know what i mean. Yeah cnn skeleton of a team going on the field like that. But there's guys. I do a lot better. But you think they'll keep jackie bradley. Jr. i know i would. I would trade. I would trade his his club for or wouldn't trade his glove for anything. You know what i mean. you know. He's had a pretty good season batting average last year. Mom's coming back at least everyone's coming back we don't need to add. They went and got jameson on. They went and got corey kluber. Just the push push everybody down. Make sure they had seven to eight quality. Starters you know you saw the padres acquired snell. Musk grove darvish over the off season and push their youngest pitcher gore and more moron weather. Those are really nice. Pitching prospects they push those guys out of the rotation. They'll they'll use them but they're not depending on them and then. The dodgers famously. Trevor bauer ton of innings. There they already had dustin main. And tony two guys. I really like that are now looking on the outside. I think are are there. Six and seven stars. That's pretty amazing pitching depth so the best teams Dance your question. The best teams will have in starting starting rotation. Yeah you know as you read all those off you know. It seems like there is a concentration of teams or a grouping of teams especially in the national league that are really pushing their chips in right now and who are you know keeping the pedal to the floor so to speak trying to win right now or making additions or acquisitions to win right now. I think it's very throw the cardinals in that mix. Last time we talked. I think was the day of the of the blake's now acquisition with darvish on the way for the padres but we haven't spoken since the cardinals acquired knowing are not out. Do you think that's fair. You see a delineation between the teams that are making acquisitions right now. And and who seemed to be acting aggressively into the spring and into the season. Or do you think it's just the teams that generally Regardless of circumstances would have been making these types of acquisitions. Now there's there's definitely they're definitely large teams large market teams. That are not doing anything pretty in some. They sold pieces rather than gain pieces. The red sox are treading water And losing Jackie bradley jr. News came down today. But you know over the time. Mookie betts. They traded away andrew benintendi. They seem to be selling and kind of trying to to to restock if not rebuild and The giants are a large market team that traditionally buys that is stuck in this kind of waiting for the kids buying on a small. "Sedan baseball fans. Probably know trae mancini as this really good power hitter on a not so good team but can you give us a quick snapshot of his career before he broke out under the scene in major league baseball. Yeah he was never thought to be the guy so he had to keep working every single level to prove himself. He started out in high school in florida. was when a really good team there but he was the first baseman he was right handed hitter and so he didn't get a whole lot of looks. His name and number is up at his high school. You own the big placard but the numbers wrong. It's actually number eighteen instead of number sixteen which is number there. That's kind of almost indicative of the things that he is going through that he's always been kind there but there's always been a player on his team or something and he's always been kinda overshadowed basically. He went from rung to rung to wrong in the minor league. Ladder finally made his debut in september of twenty sixteen and basically exploded those first few games that one in the air left-center field has dave sadegh first major league at his mom beth getting your round the basis faster than anyone this year. Who is in a home run and then in two thousand seventeen was fantastic and ended up being third-place rookie of the year behind. Aaron judge andrew benintendi in the american league. And just how good was he during the twenty nineteen season. Oh he was by far the best player. Understand you thirty five home runs. You really broke out. Towering fly ball left center field. Hit hard by trae man's cd way back in the wall. Hey goodbye homerun. He should have been there all star but when your team is bad as your only get one all star pick and john means was having a good season for the orioles as well so they went with a picture instead of manzini but he was absolutely breakout. Star back goes that god does get on the board. O est back cd hot getting four point seven five million so a huge jump and he is poised to be one of the better younger players in the american league so heading into the twenty twenty season. It sounds like his baseball career really his life. Were just in a great place. Oh yeah it was going exceptionally well for him in pretty much every aspect of his life including he started dating a woman who had been one of the on field reporters for the orioles. Forget this you home runs for infield heads for you. What's on the difference maker up to this point last year honesty. If you'd sarah perlman she's now works for nbc sports. She had left the orioles in july. What does it mean to close out. Games like doesn't get the w. carnival. Not exactly how he drew it up towards the end there but and that was going really well at the beginning of a new relationship he just become a millionaire for the first time. Everything was going perfect for him. Going into two thousand twenty and dan walk us through what happened in march of twenty twenty so like all baseball players. They get their annual physical when they get to the spring training camp and he did his regular physical bloodwork everything else and then around march. I the athletic trainer came to him and said. Hey your blood's a little wonky like your iron levels are pretty much low you all the way throughout and basically you saying you know. I don't want to scare you. But i think you're having some sort of internal bleed that's causing. It could be stomach older. It could be healy activities. Or you know there. An can't that I remember them. Asking if i had a family history of colon cancer and i said yeah my dad had obviously they did some more tests and they decided you know what we need to get your co nas copy. "We did have a A trade godown wasn't a blockbuster. But i think certainly noteworthy is that. The red sox have been shopping. Andrew benintendi for quite a while. Now and i didn't understand why this guy was a top ten pick by the red sox not that long ago but here are the details in this three way trade between boston. The mets and kansas city. The red sox receive outfielder slash d. H. franci cordeiro Right handed pitcher josh win. Chaussee three players to be named later one from the mets to from the royals. The royals get outfielder. Andrew benintendi and the mets received outfielder khalil. ali now benintendi. As soon as he showed up last year he got hurt and he was offered a year. He only played like two weeks and batted one. Oh three he had a strained ribcage but coming into last season he was a career. Two seventy seven hitter and averages about eighteen home runs a game and he's due to make six point six million this year in his second. Rv'er so he has Another year. Sorry i know he has another two years after that. So i argue but the royals will now put benintendi in left field every day because if you think about with mary field i guess he's an outfielder our second baseman so a combination of him. Edward olive arison. Michael eight taylor. But the red sox for their part we'll get cordeiro which is a mix of alex dugo number. How highly regarded wasn't a dodger system. And you're looking at hitting your next series of funding and all of that that it can be easy to kind of miss out on that. Did you experience that at all or as as it always since you're called a narrow you're kind of inara. It's all kind of gel in for ya. Yeah super great question. I mean i think in the time of covid things have been a little bit different for all of us right. So we've had to connect with with are you is. There is a different way but it's allowed us to open some doors to having online focus groups with past research participants and Just getting creative about how we continue to keep the lines of communication open with that end user in mind One of the things that i've been really passionate about is making sure not other members of the team that 'cause i i've really tried to And have been able to maintain and of that relational aspect with the client. Either there's a products that i'm actually Working with teaching them directly For the first company i worked for. We had a direct to consumer product. So we would you know. Set up training sessions and actually train. The end user using tallahassee technology and and so lots of interaction with the actual user of their products The company. emma friendly is is at doesn't have a product on the market so you much still in research development mode but making sure that my team members that are not clinical are introduced to patients and users and get a chance to hear from them.

Boston Red Sox Take A Closer Look At Corey Kluber

"There is more activity coming out of boston as well. They are rumored to be interested in several free agents and buster olney. espn's buster only reported that quote. The red sox have talked a ton of possibilities are preparing for a series of moves before the start of spring training and quote so move. Benintendi isn't the only move. That's on the mind for the red sox There's a couple of other names here. That have been linked right hander. Jayco dharavi starting pitcher. He he's up and down when it comes to his career. He was in minnesota for some time then down to texas but professional arm to come in and give them quality innings veteran relief pitcher. Alex colom formerly of the white sox in his point eight. Era from twenty twenty now. There are some concerns when you dive in a bit. Deeper into sabermetrics there is a dip in velocity and hard hit contact has increased. But you know it is a results oriented. Sport and alex colom was still fantastic for a the white sox this past summer. You have former cy. Young winner corey kluber pitching for teams on wednesday january thirteenth. So you guys may know how that workout went by the time. You're listening to this He's gonna throw about twenty five thirty pitches and it seems to be about two thirds of major league. Baseball teams will be in attendance. So the main goal is to show teams. He's healthy show. Teams that velocity is still there because he's basically missed. The entirety of the last two seasons with multiple injuries forearm torn right Throwing muscle a lot of different things going on with kluber but he could be a perfect. You know bowe bilo free agent option for not only boston but a couple of other different teams out there and the last guy the red sox have been tagged to is actually outfielder yasuko week. You know puig's been in and out of baseball and could find himself as a cheap option out there in the outfield for boston and a lot of people don't like i actually don't mind him. I liked the energy place with. I like the passion that he brings to the yard ultimately he's probably not the performer. He once was but he'll give you a professional at bats. Play hard for you. And i do think that people in boston would certainly like

Liam henrik signs with the white sox the closer and then texas oakland houston allegedly in line and try to snag. Andrew benintendi on the red sox. They're gonna put a sportsbook in the nationals park. You're going to be able to bat from your seats. And the cheese tots are somewhere allegedly in the realm of two ten to two hundred thirty million over ten years. Let's go back harbour high to the story about playing On time spring training and hundred and sixty two games and letting fans in and not even having to have a path to cope and taps that all just sounds too good to be true very ambitious. I think scott is what we could say. Rob manfred is trying to do. He's painting the right picture gas but listen. Spring training is what a month away. Look at what's going on. Take a look around. Rob the nba is having a major issue. Hockey starts this week. They've already got one team. That estimates verse three games. I know the nfl and college football through it. But times are different. World Series expert picks: Will Red Sox or Dodgers win it all?

"Teams after I saw every one of them playing person Red Sox Astros, Yankees, Indians brewers dodgers and that order. I absolutely think the Boston Red Sox have a better club that the dodgers. And I think they'll win this in six or seven I agree on the six and seven. I don't see us going to sweep like so many people do and part of it is there's not a lot of experience on both sides against you know, the top tier pitching Manny Machado in. Brian dozer have seen Chris sale at ninety seven ninety two and done some damage against them. And the same thing goes with Clayton Kershaw JD Martinez being in the, you know, the front of the order in owning Kershaw relatively in in eleven at bats. Do you sense that the key to the series is the field period? And who could feel out the other team quicker? Well, I think that's part of it. But in a short series in for me in any any series. It's about the pitching in. I am concerned about Chris sale. I'm not as concerned anymore. As much as I was about Kershaw. He's got the Kershaw. Although he's more of a craftsman. Now, you've got three lefties going for the dodgers you got to in the rotation going for the Red Sox. I'll take my chances with the right handed hitting Boston Red Sox against those three lefties. I think that could be a big big advantage when you are looking at a JD Martinez in the middle of the order, Mookie Betts, Bogaerts Nunez, those guys that hit from the right side. I think they're going to do some damage in Fenway. I think it's gonna be a different game in LA. You know, I I worry about them pitching to die like, Cody Bellinger. For example. I think he had to keep the ball up on him. He's an uppercut swinger. You put the ball down. You may never see it again. I think these are pretty quick pitchers at I think the way they pitched the opposition is going. Is going to determine who winces, and that's not a genius comment. Are they it's all about the pitching, no doubt? And I think the way that the the Red Sox has set it up where they have Chris sale going game one David price game two, and then the unknown so ripper Selo and Nathanael have all the will be coming out of the pen in the first game or two depending on what goes on in. Do you sense it they're they're protecting themselves from a a short start from occur sailing game one? Right. I think that's exactly what they're doing. I don't think I would even though they did it all year long. I don't think I would pick up these back to back. I think they are doing it. Look, I think Alex Cora was the manager of the year. He and bo-, you know, bowl mill with the athletics. I don't say anything that guy does. But sale, you know, just coming back from the hospital probably lost a couple pounds said he couldn't afford to lose place at the game of his life. Can he do twice in a row? I think that can that's why I think the Red Sox are a little bit better team at this point of the year much better during the season. But you know, you gotta give credit for the dodgers. They scrapped themselves back into this. They one and I give him credit. I just don't think I think they're going to get get up managed. I think Alex Cora and the Red Sox front office is gonna do the job. A former staffer the Astros and Mariners currently with clubhouse corner dot com is kind enough to join us here. Cambio tonight. Drew harvard. Kevin Franson, we are previewing Dame one of the World Series tomorrow night at Fenway Red Sox dodgers Clayton Kershaw. Chris sale. We've been talking about the pitching birdie. I do want to get more into the offense on both of these teams. We're talking about a dodger team who set their franchise record two hundred and thirty four home runs this year. And then he had the Red Sox knocked around. The Astros was twenty nine runs in five games. Jackie Bradley, jR, driving and nine in the AFC. Yes. So tell me about the offense for both of these teams. And really who do you think has the biggest advantage? But I still think it's the Red Sox the wildcard for me could be mad Kemp he won't be starting at D H. They have to of course, and us mad count in their order in the middle of the order behind Machado and in front of Brian dosier. They're using dosier as well. It's mad Kemp that kind of scares me on the Red Sox. He's the great unknown. He can hit the gaps. He can hit the ball over the played as well rested. He had a terrific first-half tailed off in the second half. He's the guy that when you put put all the chips down now Matt Kemp may pick him up. So he's a guy that scares me in the line. David freezes quietly under the radar. They have some weapons. No question. We all know what Justin Turner can do we've seen. What Chris Taylor can do. This is a very very good club. You've got a pitch to bell. And you're like I said they've got to keep the ball up. The bed is is make them swing at it. Get away from the uppercut swing. Yes. Of course is dangerous. But on the other side of the ball, Mookie Betts. You know, Mookie Betts when I saw him first off in the Arizona fall league. He was playing second base. He was far enough of the best athlete in the air that year. This guy makes things happen. Then he's followed by Benintendi. And granted he's a left-handed hitter. But he can smack the ball, and how do you pitch to JD? So I think these are very well balanced teams. But I think pitching and Fenway is going to be a little bit too much for the dodgers. And I think they're going to lose at Fenway, maybe two games. And then we'll see what happens from there. Yeah. I think it's huge. If you know, especially the the Red Sox hold serve then they can play around a little bit not play around. But having Mookie come in and not really be afraid of like he's going to cost us. Oh, no. Because when he was there this year and even in the past that you could play. Yes. So much range. We all know that. No question about it holiday. Would you like to pick up a Nathan? The scrapping. You know? How would you like to have a number three starter name Nathan Valdez control the ball a hundred miles an hour who the dodgers had at one point. And now he may win a game against you. I mean, there's so many corks to this when you can get a guy like a ball deep during the season as your number three starter. You know, I just love it. I love it for both teams Verney who's your who's the guy you worry about more at the back end. Is it kenley or kimbrel kimbrel against this team? By the way, one for thirty one guys that are on the in the lineup for the dodgers won for thirty one against him. Well, I would never ever say a bad word about kenley Jansen. Is on his game right now. He scares me. But the Red Sox may put these away before its time believe me, and if they can then kenley Jansen if they can't then kenley Jansen is to be reckoned with the guy is still great. I feel sorry for what he's dealing with. And I think he's gritty gutsy, but you know, kimbrough's no slouch either both. These bullpens are really really strong. These are these are two good teams. I don't think they're the best two teams. I think these are two good teams. What's your thoughts on Manny Machado? And just the way he's been pretty demoss postseason. I am old school my friends. It made me sick to my stomach to see what he did it at first base. Tasers secular. It makes me sick to my stomach to see him going into second day slake that and I think the thing that made me the sickest is when you say hustling is not my Cup of tea on a scout, my friends and the first thing that we fill in. There's three things can this guy play is he better than what we have. And number three. Can you play for us? And for me on my form. No he cannot play for us. There are teams that would love to have him though. Run to him. That's fine. You put that guy in the mid west or in some cities, you put them in San Francisco and watching my hustle watch. What happens for me? It's a way over the top. I didn't like it. I don't like it. And I think it's going to hurt him. I I. I think the one team that everyone talked about is the Phillies in him going to I'm calling because out here. He he killed. Yeah. Try this or New York or any other big market that he's projected to go. What do you think is agents said the reaction of his agent when he read those comments, please. You just saw it. You saw him hustle. You saw last game. He played hustling kept his mouth shut. But you know, what damage is done. He is not the type of guy that I think is gonna win you the pennant. I like us a scrapper much more. Yeah. You can knock the fence down. But you know, it's not all about him. You give me a Justin Turner any day of the week. I'll take that Bernie. I think I'm sorry. Go ahead. Why don't you finish your thought? Go ahead. I think in general this dodgers team is a little bit over the over the top for me. I think pointing to your muscles rounding, you know, your home run your home run trots a bit over the top for me. I was just curious on how fast that switch is flipped when you see a guy like minimum Chato acting this way because we see a pro sports, Bernie talent will usually Trump everything else. Yes it well. And that's why I said there are teams that are going to run to them they wanna badly and again for the clubs that I was with with the Houston Astros with the Seattle Mariners. I don't think we would have taken that type of demonstrative behavior. But the game has changed and you either love it or or get out of it and don't pay any attention. I happen to love it. But I don't have to like what I see from some players believe me ninety nine percent of these guys are much different. They're wonderful guys. And all it takes one guy to show off like that. And give other people a bad name. I didn't like it. I guess that clear. Hey, we got you a prediction with the Red Sox in either six or seven but tomorrow night who is your guy is it sale is occurs show. Or is it somebody else? No Kershaw gets game one. I think Kershaw is pitching very well. I worry about sale I worry about about the hospital the stomach. I don't know if he's less weight. I haven't seen him.

MLB -- Boston Red Sox keep Houston Astros within their reach

"Is way out of trouble. Shabby. The legend do worked on ESPN radio and the game last night with Jessica Minoza with that call in the bottom of the first inning, the Red Sox struck, I recommend Grasset or swang in a live Dr, bass it out of the right center field. Cut it off as Rettig bet. Surround third. He's into score the Red Sox two batters in Leded wanted nothing. You could tell the Gary cole- was struggling for his secondary stuff and Rafael Devers took advantage to two on the way swing ground basically to left via Benintendi scores Bogart. So stop it. Third as federalis holds them up. It's an RBI single Deckers the other way. And it's too dummy. David price in the Red Sox had a quick to nothing lead, but in the top of the second inning, the Astros counter-attacked. Swing a line drive, fair ball inside the first base line into scores Correa Maldonado on his heels Springer into second. Just like that. The Astros have tied it up to to a soft line drive that just hung in the air and hung in the air and Pierce diving wasn't able to reach it in the top of the third. The Astros took the lead, here's a three to swing and a high fly ball left field that will back there on its way dawn over the monster Marwick Gonzales, a two run blast. The Astros have a four, two lead. After the game, Garrett, Cole would talk about what happened next is maybe being the pivot point because he did not have shutdown inning and the bottom of the third inning. After the Astor's took the lead, this is what happened. Jackie Bradley Jr. the plate bowl turns down the rubber now to one. Swing and a high fly ball towards the left field corner Gonzales swords Alon that was off the lobster into score Bogart's Pierce autists heels here comes Denver's Bradley's into second Genesee Bradley Jr. clears the bases, Red Sox by Iran Boston on top five four is that was high up onto the monster just inside the poll state of the park. It was still five, four in the bottom of the seventh inning. Lance mccullers junior was on the mound behind the plate Martine Maldonado and look Lance mccullers union as one of the best breaking balls in baseball in Maldonado acknowledged that what happened in the bottom of the seventh inning, which was repeated problems. Catching baseball may have been because his unfamiliarity with that great curl ball mccullers give lesson. Now it's left up to Bogart with bets at third to down the pitch outside off the global Maldonado. Haney Red Sox have an insurance run that one was up at a way Maldonado couldn't keep it in front and Mukhi bets, grants home six, four, Boston Rick came out of the Red Sox bullpen to throw the top of the eighth inning attacking headers and then Mookie Betts applied the coup gras in the bottom of the eighth inning. One live base hit out of the right field. That's with the knocked Evers around. Third, he's to score bet slides into second. It's an RV I double Mookie delivers than it seven to four in the top of the night. Then Craig kimbrel emerged from the Boston Doug ad. And you remember what happened at the end of the Anki series. He struggled to find home plate and there was some anxiety in the stands at Fenway park as Kimball started at night inning, and the Astros began to rally on swang in a ball ham left field towards the monster, and that's high off the monster. Now to Vail take the turn will hang on at first. He kinda limps back in there. That's an RBI single off the monster. And now it's seven, five next to the plate, Alex bregman who was red hot at the end of the regular season, the Red Sox staff, it made it clear decision not to pitch to him six walks in the firm. Two-game series. Plus he was hit by a pitch in another plate appearance in this case, Kimbrell had to throw them, and this is what happened regmunt back in a way to get a one, the pitch swing and a high fly ball, left field Benintendi near the wall and makes the catch, and that is the ballgame. Just the base of the green monster hold it in and kimbrel by the skin of his teeth to close it out and the Red Sox. Hang onto what it in the Astros clubhouse after the game bregman was asked about whether or not he thought he got it. He said, no, if I got it, it would have been out in the street. Mookie Betts was on the field after the game, and I caught up with them. We did great. No, yet out. We've proven that we've been in both games. Everyone was second one and we'll just continue to play are going into Houston. When asked you about a couple of pitchers, David price, you know the scrutiny that's been on early game, keeps you guys right there. You guys win a game. He starts. Yeah. I mean, he's a great pitcher, you know, no matter what people say goes out. He are thirty million dollars a year. For reason he showed about record cells work out of the bullpen. He's, you know, he's done great. Starting out of the bullpen anywhere you put up. You know, he's got. And compete Fisher. AJ Hinch. The Astros manager talked about Mukhi bets ignited from the very beginning of the game. I mean, this place energy of this place when he comes up too bad is is really electrifying. So when you try to minimize much as you can in front of them, we didn't do a great job of that today. But from the the first bat- on, he kind of set the tone from the very beginning. So it's why he's very much MVP candidate. AJ was asked also about looking bad's, going around the bases in that seventh inning to make the score six, two, four at that time, give a lesson the insurance from this word and the seven Makiko around the basis how unusual to see that with with its. He went around the basis that have to put a ball and play in on. That's those are tough in this in this type of series is tightly CEPA games. It's a long characteristic. I mean, obviously, mccullers abroad mccullers ended try to keep it a one run game with the way that this series can go. And it's almost like a Tiger Balm for me. So last to a couple of nasty breaking ball, just look like, you know, Martinez lost it in the people in center field or just got a little bit got a little bit lax back. There had a little tough time and Mukhi went around the bases. I walk and then no-ball plane is of scorn before this series began AJ Hinch raved about Mukhi bets in his impact on the Red Sox. And Alex Cora was asked about Hinch comments on mochi and his play. Give lesson. Listen. A game AJ called Mukhi ticking time bomb, and he kind of went off tonight. Do you think it was more himself tonight? You said you wanted to get on the air did a couple of times? Yeah, Jesus Margai they went to Stanford.
