I don't know if this trip did you bring me the news, but I got an Apple watch. A lot of people talking about it, and I am spark Patterson. I have all sorts of new things that I'm learning about it and I'm advanced. Which got my attention because I was I was reading about techie things online because I have a new apple watch. I read about the reason one of the reasons that they need to delay James Bond. We know the movie was supposed to come out in April 2021. They've kicked it down the road some six months more. This was after it was supposed to come out in April of 2020 got the late October, then level Buck. Well, guess what they actually have to reshoot scenes that Feature technology James Bond style technology because they think it's already out of date. Oh, you're kidding me already. James Bond's high tech gadgets Will be outdated. That is the concern of people close to the movie. Come on. No kidding. And I guess there is a have they have these films sponsors for this. Which include Nokia and Omega, and they would be frustrated. So, the source says, with the older models of products that would date the movie when it's finally released, which means that some of the scenes we're gonna have to be very Carefully edited and look that to bring things up to date, the main scenes that the producer said they need to consider reshooting involves the gadget man. Q. Who in this case is played by Ben Whishaw. So you can't have bond going in there talking to Q saying what do you have? And then Nokia and Omega? These tech companies were saying, Oh, no, You can't be showing this stuff off. It's already advanced so much in the two years since we shot it was supposed to, you know, because it was supposed come out a year ago. Technology does go a long way in a year. But That's interesting. Yeah, Tech. It gets out of date. Quick. Damn. I can't believe they just keep posting. I bet it's got to be a good movie, right? No, not necessarily. I mean, we've seen a lot of movies that take a lot of time in a ton of money than aren't any good. That's true. You're right, Steve. Sorry I blew up. It's okay. Sam Adams is stealing. The Clydesdales. For their Super Bowl ad. Well, Budweiser is taking the year off from advertising at the Super Bowl. I think I love this. Now let's switch gears making movies based on classic books by 19th Century authors has been a solid trend for a while now. Jane Austen, Louisa May Alcott Victor Hugo Among the writers have gotten the Hollywood treatment in recent years. Well this weekend, it's Charles Dickens in the spotlight. And there's a lot of buzz about the new film titled The Personal History of David Copperfield joining us on Skype to talk about it. Washington Post film critic and Hornaday. Great to have you back and thank you so much. Thank you. Okay. We have an iconic dickens novel way of a big name Director. A star studded cast. Does the formula work here? Yes, it works. It works absolutely beautifully. This is a movie that I saw last almost a year ago exactly at the Toronto Film Festival, and it sent me out of the theater like as if on Wings, it is so. A fleet and lighthearted and winning and charming and creative. This is from, of course, Armando Iannucci. Who we know is the guy behind veep but has just made some exquisitely funny on point movies in recent years, like the Death of Stallion and the Loop, and so he brings that kind of Hiding, slashing wit to this adaptation, which is a really good marriage with Dickinson's own sense of humor and and a really nifty kind of turn. He has populated this tale. With really expansive, race neutral ensemble of actors. So Dev Patel, the Indian actor plays David Copperfield, and he's surrounded by anyone and everyone you know from Tilda Swinton and Peter Capaldi and Hugh Laurie to Ben Whishaw, Benedict Wong, Mike Nikki and Rook a bird. I mean, it's just a wonderfully Polly glad cast again, which brings Victorian England toe life. But then also really resonates with where we are today. It's It's just enormous fun Tow watch, and it's kind of the perfect I don't know it's It's like the The perfect leavening that we kind of need during these difficult times. And and I understand that if folks are comfortable going to a movie theater, we have movie theatres are actually showing it right. Well, we dio and so the good news and the bad news is this is a fabulous movie. The bad news is that on Lee, our friends in Virginia, which is where the theatre here, open conceded, or people that are willing to travel to Virginia. And of course, we're all making our own decisions on whether or not that we want to go back, and that's something I'll be addressing more fully next week when I Do a column about Tenet. And my one regret about this particular film is so good, and it's just it's so badly needed. It's spirit and it's humor in his life. I wish that they could have seen fit to make this available for all of us. Not just those of us who are living in places where theater's air opener and also feel comfortable going back in. So all I can say to those of us who aren't ready yet. Just put a little asterisk by this one and definitely catch up with that one. It's Available on streaming and on demand, All right, and thanks so much. Have a good weekend. Simply Shawn. Thank you and Hornaday, Washington Post film critic.
