"Be doing brings us onto the king of the monsters. Yeah. Not a five star film should point out right from the off. We gave this film one-star. I should also point out, rightfully all that the person who gave it one star is not in the rim. Ben Travis because I'm really wanted to talk about it. I haven't seen this film James, don't believe. I am planning to see it at the the weekend. Helen, I think your little more up at than one star one star is quite the reigning. It is why I would say harsh, but I can't disagree with much of the substance of Ben's review, if I'm onus until I heard from you. I know that everyone that I know from empire he was seeing this film was one star film that was I, I haven't I have not seen it. But I have heard who mode of people shouting about in which I have to say surprised because the traders really good. They played up the spectacle, and the physical side at the movie, Michael hardy director, and the writer, director of this movie has a good track record, as director Francis and trick or treats, which to frame for good harvey'll, if you haven't checked amount as a writer, he was co writer, an expert to all those years ago as well. So what went wrong if needs? So we start years after five years after the attack on some Francisco by the Muthu Muto and God Zeller that left the city in rubble basically. And there's even a little sort of flashback set up there, where we get to know that this little family was, was invol- veer for Mehta her daughter goes up to be Millie, Bobby Brown and Kyle Chandler as, as Mark. So they are cryptos ecologists. They've been working on animal communications, and that has kept on going, even as their marriages Fulton. And they've separated he's often the wilderness, working wolves, she's developing thing to try and talk to these titans to try and because the governments have of the world have basically find more of them. And they're just kind of watching them under the auspices of monarch to see what happens. I mean, monarchy get definitely not shield totally different organization, not prodigious. Yeah. And then Charles dunces character who is of chosen is basically a bastard, and he turns up and kidnaps veer from Carter Emma on her daughter and takes away because he wants this machine that can potentially talk. To the titans. And that's the setup of the story. And what do you know, soon enough low to titans are breaking free of their ancient slumber and coming to cause chaos all over the place? And if only we had one titan, who might like us and might be persuaded to the east. Oh, man of so for I've, I've be getting there. So, yeah, it's I think there's a decent idea, there gets over complicated again, you've got loads and loads and loads of human characters. You know, you've some coming back from the first film Sally Hawkins is Dr Graham Bradley Whitford in there just being sarcastic in the door. He's given on five stars Bradley Whitford true. Toll. Is Joachim in this movie he is? I mean, unless he was go, because he is very toll. Cam, what Nabis back? So still making sort of know make pronouncements the titans as cold as z plays two characters plays twins..

Let's have a guest this week, sees the release fives already out of Silla king of the monsters sequel to Gareth Edwards, two thousand fourteen Godzilla just in case you were wondering, and it has an all-star cast, Ghazala, Gadara, mothra Rodion. He's in it as well Mazen. How did they get them all? I mean they just threw money at the problem, I guess. Yes, indeed and mines in the size of the trailers it also as humans in as well. Billy Bobby Brown and fear for Megan and the legendary Charles dunce. Yes, you will have seen him, of course, in movies, like the golden child. About alien three last action hero. Most recently, I believe he can be found on the television drama, the game of thrones. Yes, we may have covered that on your lawn. He's also in God's kingdom. And so we sent a long Ben Travis the silent assassin to have a chat, which stance about the movie his career and a great many things do. Please enjoy welcome to the empire podcast, Charles dance. Thank you, a nice surprise it is. When you go and see a big creature feature. And then chose downturns. I think very much you a monster movie guy is something that appeals to you is, I was amongst movie guy, I reckon when I was about eighteen and nineteen I've moved on a bit. But, you know, you'd have to be pretty tough cookie. Not to be impressed by the what's been created in this film. I mean what we can do now with CGI digitally nouncement is mind boggling. You know when you think that. When Godzilla was I made. And in fact, did you know that this is the thirty fifth thirty five as a hell of a legacy five zero? When they was, I kind of guys in rubber suits being photographed from extrordinary angles now I act to a pink balloon. That is tethered some thirty feet up in the air and try to look convincingly terrified when I'm looking at this pink balloon bakers when eventually you see the thing put together a you see what I've had in my mind is a pretty terrifying thing, actually. So which monster movies made an impression on you. When you're into that sort of stuff. Do you remember? I can't remember a film. I think it was cool to creature from the black lagoon. And I think I saw that Saturday morning pictures..

"I mean, which I know obvious and trite but, like they've literally sped up bits that they to an unnaturally human pace for no obvious reason, it's not a purely stylistic thing. Like I Ritchie does. It's like it's like they couldn't get the action fast enough. So they've sped up later but it doesn't look human anymore. I think what is, is the fa- me? What am I was with? It was the, the musical numbers in on these all like big lavish musical Nimbus me actually didn't have any real energy to them. And I think they have to use those traits to try and give it a bit of a sense of energy, the prince, Aleve, number of is slow, I mean, I had the same issue with the beauty and the beast remake. It's like throwing visual glitter at the screen to try and compensate for lack about momentum. This is it's more beating the beast end of the Disney remake spectrum than the Cinderella end. If you know what? I mean Cinderella took some risks when out there essentially dropped huge swathes of the animation. This is much more slavish. This is much more faithful and not always to its benefit. We shall see were Lanqing falls on the curve later on in the year as well. Okay. Then three stars for Latin, which is we always send the podcast is a recommendation. But perhaps you're going for musical this week. Maybe go over Rockaway. Yeah. I would say, okay, well, not note that is it for example, cast? Join us next week. For more film related fun. We'll be joined by Charles dance one of the stars of Godzilla king of the monsters on, of course, formerly of gamma thrones. And the golden child and all sorts of great movies as. Also, Jim Cummings the writer director star editor composer, all sorts of stuff of the excellent, indie flick thunder road can say fairly not right until we meet again until it a spacious occasion. It is by from Helena, HARA. It is by from Ben Travis. Goodbye goodbye from me. I'm off on a jet plane, not though to Madrid. But you never know you never know guys something might happen. "Get return to Kane. There's precedent for this in terms of Titanic nominations avatar Goto nominations, Titanic return of the king both won eleven Oscars. I've seen some people suggest that may be Feigen, we'll get kind of special Oskar in recognition of this achievement but I said, a little bit of patronizing. Pothead, really isn't it given the real thing you fuckers give it thirty five Oskar? We'll be happy. All right. They're five authors and on bombshell, also in another bombshell. If you do go to see this movie again, when Peter Parker is having a conversation with Carol danvers, right? Look at Thome whole when he's covered in dust, and dirt he looks like a young Tony Goldwyn, the spitting image. It's been. Take away from this. You'll see Howard, the duck. That's fine in the film, not just a film came out years ago terrible. Anyone else, the giant man? So there's there's scouts in the van. With hope. And then there's a big shot and giant, the background, Scott somehow two places at once error. I'm sure a little fix but anyway, on those bombshells actually no, it shouldn't win any shoot. It is Tara films for children anyway, on those bombshells that is it for this live offenders game sport or special. Thank you to Hasbro for the excellent prizes tonight, and the people who have been going up. So. Yeah. "Not sure she's doing very well meeting in these aspects where the yeah buts when he will say as well as as well as thinking that Julie Walters may be the best Demetre on the planet this movie Rooney couple movies into Jesse Buckner career. Maybe think Jessie Buckley, become the best matching the planet in the next few years if she continues on current victory amazing beast. Yeah, amazingness. Yeah. Sing she dance. She wants batmans head and allowance all sorts of stuff going on. She's just terrific. Yeah. I haven't seen her be bad in anything. Good in them. Tom hardy TV show to she was too as well. So yeah, I mean. Just soul wrong, basically, including Thome Harper, and my friend Johnny who did a couple of days focused pulling. Yeah, really focus. Focus was often dare you. He was only there for two days a couple of shots. I thought were ripping out of focus in fact, lens cap was still home. So weird dare you. So we this. What are we give this? We give this four stars or stars. We gave this four stars four stars IMP. Awad rosen. I am in agreement with that next up. Ben Travis will tell us all about the Tory debut of one Jona Lewis hill it has mid nineties. It is mid nineties and is a live -ly live coming of age story about a kid called Stevie play by sunny soldier terrible, pronunciation, I'm sorry. If that's wrong, pronunciation was not great. It wasn't good. Was it? You were hoping hadn't noticed, but it did. But he was the kids in killing of sacred DEA if you traumatized by that movie, he is having a better time than he was in killing of sacred, but he still having some trouble. So he's about twelve thirteen years old living in LA his older brother played by Lucas hedges, kind of constantly beat the shit out of him. And he's just in that like awkward stage, but he meets a group of Gates's. And he saw hanging out with them, and they kinda take him in. And it's it's that kind of movie is coming of age finding people getting a new outlook on life winding you'll tribe, and this is very much inspired by Jona hills Charlton and unless isn't it? Yeah. I think so it just feels very him. Generally in terms of the choices of the cultural references and the music. Oh, my go- the soundtrack to this is incredible loads of amazing nineteen hip hop stuff. The incredible surf UK version of wave of mutilation by the pixies. There's a scene where he's kind of go is bold for the first time. He's try now if you trace and just constantly falling over it's like a montage of influence over over and over again in front of the family house sets it yet this alternate vision of pixie song as soon as that was happening. I was like I'm so in on this. So is amazing music. And it's just really really well observed especially Joan hills debut film feels really confident it's very stylistic showing that kind of bookstore ratio, very intentionally kind of lo fi film stock. But also in the in the choices that makes there so many scenes in this that just feel so real. So even though Stevie kind of get seven bells note, how Mba's older brother, there's a scene at the Seoul the phone he sneaks into his brother's bedroom. Well, he's away. And he's just kind of like rifling through the CD's Brian down notes of all the things that he should be listening to this shrine of things that his kind of gateway into the world. But then also when he meets these. Gates's he finds a so of another way of life, and you start to see shifting perspectives on the carrots is sounds sink street. And we're way it is. Except a lot meaner Ka-sing street was with your your brother can be the best person in the world. Yeah. In fact, as well show to Lucas hedges because he's not actually in the film that much, but what he does in those scenes at first you kind of hates these horrible character..

"On the confidence the the sort of attitude the jokes everything else, but it is there underneath and I think you notice it more as you go along some people have said that the tunnel project. Pegasus location is in fact, the same location that up the beginning of events assemble. I think there's there's been some speculation by that. I mean, the only problem is the entrance to this one is very much in mountains among hills, and that one was very much on a plane now not Maria house, and this one that one was very much on a plane. That's not to say there isn't another ex at the far end of the tunnel. So I guess it's possible. It doesn't mean a little bit of research, and this I that the tunnels for similar as in. And he talked his cameo in the red winning episode. He is a massive game for Inskeep. And he's really fun. But there's all kinds of stuff. It's twenty one pages. If you into the show, you'll love you've seen three episodes, Nick, then you should watch the rest comeback and enjoy such possessed the Shiite king which to get fruit. If I'm going to give you some more puns at are in this magazine. Try and I'm not gonna give you any context. "Have to do is text movies the word movies to the following number seven eight zero seven zero movies could be all caps could be all lower case. But it is the word movies and the following number seven eight zero. Seven zero and pretty soon after that, you'll be reading incredible articles about economics, politics, entertainment and much much more once article in economists that caught my eye recently was about the dangers of Thomas weapons, and how detain them for anyone who's grown up watching the Terminator movies and sundry other films were sophisticated defense networks designed that humans are a mere inconvenience this one really hit home, and it's good that someone is actually doing something about it. Hopefully, fingers crossed. So thanks once again to the economist for sponsoring the show and don't forget to pick up your free print copy. Now that is legendary. Okay time now for our second. Guess this week dean DuBois is the director of the how to train you dragon trilogy which ends this week with how to twenty dragon the hidden world an ES shepherd this franchise from humble beginnings to well. We'll be this week. We sent Ben Travis who knows his trained. Dragon onions alone to talk to dean or they're on enjoy. Welcome to the employee put cast the director of how train you dragon hidden wills and how to try new dragon into and co-director of the film deemed boa. Did. I did a nail that you did. Thank you doing. Thanks coming along was an emotional experience for you bringing the house train you tracking saga too close to to round out the trilogy ten years after the first film. Yes, definitely, emotional and bitter and some regards because the the team that made all three of these films has largely been the same over the last decade. And so we bid farewell to one another. We may not be reassembled for a project in the future in the same way. Just as you know, we're bidding farewell to the characters of the story. And what was it about about that Ginny and those characters of especially hiccup and toothless who just a huge amount of emotional connection that what what was it about them that made you want to devote an entire decade of your life to to telling this story. It's nothing in my career. So far has ever panned out the way that I expected, so I think. Jumping into how to train your dragon to help. Chris Sanders when he was reassigned to it in two thousand eight was was in my mind, kind of short term assignment we were going to jump in and use the fifteen months that remained before its release to try to put together a story that worked and worked very hard to get a dealt on in time. I didn't anticipate that I would be attached to it in two thousand nineteen. But it following it success at the box office this studio had approached me to think up for a sequel for Sanders had gone back to work on the crews. And so I said, I don't really like sequels in general if they lack purpose, and therefore how about a trilogy where we could use three installments to play three acts of one larger coming of age. We'd follow hiccup from the Viking run to narrow L to the the the wise Viking chief that he was destined to be and in the process. Explain what happened to dragons and why they aren't here anymore. That felt like a compelling narrative to me, and it was only after beginning work on it that I that started to occur to me that while this this really feels in some ways like the the Star Wars trilogy did to me when I was a kid that it was an expansion on a world that loved with characters that I was growing quite affectionate to that. In a lot of ways reflected myself in those people, I know hiccup in. Regular just being an oddity and his world, and you You know. know, someone who would be more inclined to stay inside and re comic books and to be outside playing sports. That was definitely my upbringing. And I so I wanna talk through various aspects of the whole trilogy. I'm we'll we'll come back to that stole was notes but to go right back to the beginning. Then so so when you brought in an ether, it was a temporary thing you didn't have this initial feeling like this is going to be a decade spanning trilogy..

"These unrest the movies moving as well. The relationship between say miles Jeff has died really interested. It doesn't go down. The I was desperately hoping they wouldn't go down the route of he becomes like the JJ J of this universal swearing bring down spider man at all costs. And I'm so glad that the end was some sort of reconciliation there between the call and the vigilante here also what year is Brian Tyree. Henry having my God. Yeah. He's in pretty well from self long continue because he's doing pretty well for us as well. Last question comes from Paul f Reagan when Gwen mutt miles. Why does she use a fake name? The whole thing about her coming back. We in the past knowing to find miles didn't make lick of sense. I guess just wanna turn the movie early. I think the we in the past makes total sense to me because dimensional travel Gada Timea y stuff. Yes. Bowl. Forty two year old Peter Parker and a twenty six Parker and they both sound exactly on a nineteen thirties. Peter Parker who sounds really different than has the best lines movie. He was hilarious him with the rubik's. Purple the the the constant wind going on around him. And there's a moment. West spider him on Spiderman was shoulder and his spot hams is like flowing in the breeze because he's on him on wa he is also in that bubble where the breezes it. So good. Yeah. So it totally makes sense to me that she'd come through weaker Lee. That's kind of time why he stuff totally fine. The the fight is they will react to each other. When they meet that there is this sort of spider tingle when all of the meat, so it I didn't have a problem with actually sort of made sense. Guess he didn't have it smiles at the have it when he meets her of he's been bitten which by ways. No, the thing that another clue to earn being the prowler like how did he not take into that particular tunnel because he'd been there the night before presumably working for the kingpin? But yeah, but then again miles has flop sweat and other things to worry about trying to impress his hot girl that he's really connecting with on the shoulder touch. A lovely things will, hey. Don't try to home ks miles. Morales is a professional. Working better for my Herschel ally than anyone else pretty much. I have another idea Gwen thing. Okay. There's another Gwen Stacy in these universe and simply right? Yeah. Because she's coming from everyone's coming from world with Peter Parker already much seems like maybe Peter Parker and Peter be park. So presumably there is also a Gwen Stacy in this universe that miles. Morales has met yet. So if she's going around sending Gwen Stacy, and then he meets another one Pinault's fair enough works share works for me. All right final question. Who's favorites by go petty poke is robo specifically when it had a little sad face on it. That was the most parking poll the film for me. I'm gonna say Spiderman warr because I've just remembered him with rubik's cube. Just everything he does any sense just genius of stillness, your occasionally, they recording the film. They just go out and Mike. Mike that this year? He's been Spiderman on superman such long last a banner year for him. What a what a year, but he hasn't played honor. Maybe next next next time my favorite. I, you know, I like them all I like them all sitting bastard, honestly, that's me. And is it for this? Spiderman into the spy diverse spider spoiler Spyder special. Our next sport, especially we got whole tunnel. Coming up is going to be for Akron with Reggie, James won-, spilling the beans. And that following that. We're going to have Travis night. He's not a hero. But he is night. Ask to be Bumblebee. And it'll be sometime before New Year's day. I sleep. Asleep? "Yeah. There's a good point. I hadn't thought of that. But it is true. I think we were supposed to get more of an insight into his head. I suppose where he's coming from which I'm not a hundred percent sure that we really did. Anyway of think you need it for him. Because of what he does in the he he has his extreme views that he talks about when he's alone with his people, and they have seen in the in the French house races. No, we don't we don't say this allowed. This is what is what we believe. But we don't say this vision of out loud. A thing you need the insight into his more interior willed. So then you can see the the difference when he's in front of the public vision that he says in front of the people I think there's a really interesting it was a misstep necessarily how the car is designed. But he looks so weird off pudding. I'm not sure that you entirely by that he is charming or seductive as we are meant to believe that he is rerouted Elise people around. Then again, what do I know the America? Is governed by man who's wearing some sort of weird ferret on its head. I know I actually agree with that. I think he should probably look better. I mean, just on a purely, you know, base level Kaga chewed low looks in this film. And then look at his ex boyfriend like come on, you're generally, generally, couples look approximately as attractive as each other. You know, you kind of want to have that sort of a quick and also just like in terms of dynamics that gives you a sort of the same dynamic between the two you want equivalence dramatically speaking to to set up this faceoff. No, I I'm guessing the ideas that the dark magic that he's used has eroded his look somewhat giving him the weird I kind of thing, but it is a distraction that I don't think is necessarily -ffective to really quick points Griswold all the way through talks about how credence is going to come to them, which is very emperor. Putting not no Lebanon's and liberty. In the end he goes to credence. He shows up on the on the roof and goes, hey. Did the symmetry of big reveals tonight. Party the French translation, the symmetry of character is really no it's fatherless father of the big character. So that's a little point to respond to that. By the way, people can go to the cemetery. Jim Jim Morrison's, buried an Oscar Wilde. Underground during with the blue fire. I don't think that's the thing on the very last question comes from Logan, Jane Nicholson, what was everyone's favorite beast. So so so the NFL God, I live at Netflix. And he's gotta pull these police at the end, and he was a good boy Hugo the blood pact. The biggest impact because I think that the packs thing that ends on that is the reason that Dumbledore grennell world's come go against each other. Because they made that packed now Dumbledore has a if he can find a way to break it, then he can move against Grendel world, and that's all down to that Nikola. He's very good. I like him. "Yeah just about that it's actually about this team of people who come together to investigate a series of child murders and they have to basically invent forensic science and criminal profiling as they go in order to do it so it sort of based on like all this stuff was happening time like fingerprints were starting to be a thing this eighteen nineties and fingerprints were starting to kind of be used and stuff like that but it was all brand new and they didn't know what worked and what didn't and so done your berle is collagen he kind of leads the team and he's trying to essentially profile this guys kind of mind hunters he's a prequel or criminal criminal minds eighteen fortythree criminal mind yeah he's hot i i don't watch criminal minds i just watch ncis and then all the other latter shows i don't bother episode of this someone describe this as true detective 1896 whatever it was it was a pretty good way there's a little bit about the the sort of turn of the century new yorkers is extraordinarily it was an enormous like it was apparently bigger than the one they built for fantastic beasts this was in eastern europe i think it was in prague yeah i know it was it was it was a bit of pest was passed in budapest budapest because ben travis deanna this right and we were chatting back and forth by questions in i went war was sean even put a pest i went did you know there's a statue in budapest of colombo i didn't get to see that and now i've feel like i've wasted my entire trip so he talks about that it was very nice i'm in past and it was an incredible incredible set like they made this huge place i think they're hoping to go back for a second season i hope they do the second book is really creepy.
