Federal Reserve likely to skip interest rate hike at next meeting in June, officials signal
"Federal Reserve officials are sending out stronger signals they may forgo an interest rate increase at the Central Bank's next meeting. I'm Ben Thomas with the latest. Three leading fed officials have expressed support for the idea of skipping a rate hike in June, fed governor Phillip Jefferson says that would give policymakers time to see more data. President Biden has nominated Jeff sent to be the fed's vice chair, putting him close to the center of fed policy making, the comments come despite a slew of tough talk from other fed policymakers and to disappointing inflation report last week, and those suggesting a pause also indicate hikes could resume later this year. The fed has implemented ten straight hikes pushing its benchmark interest rate to about 5.1%, the highest in 16 years. Ben Thomas, Washington

Debt limit deal heads to vote in full House while McCarthy scrambles for GOP approval
"The debt ceiling and budget deal worked out between House speaker Kevin McCarthy and President Biden has advanced to the full House, where a vote is expected Wednesday. I'm Ben Thomas with a look at its progress. The House rules committee voted 7 to 6 to advance the bill, chairman Tom Cole, an Oklahoma Republican calling it a product of compromise. And reflects the realities of a divided government. We shouldn't allow that to overshadow what this bill accomplishes. It would restrict spending for the next two years while also suspending the nation's debt limit during that time, and the nonpartisan congressional budget office says it reduces deficits by $1.5 trillion over the decade, but South Carolina Republican Ralph Norman also a member of the freedom caucus was disappointed. We had a real bill that was going to make a difference. We did in the original bill. This being watered down is completely takes the teeth out of it. And I see why the Democrats vote for it. I see it now. He and Texas congressman chip Roy, who earlier in the day, said not one Republican should vote for this deal. Join Democrats in opposing the bill's advance. Ranking Democrat Jim mcgovern of Massachusetts accusing the GOP of weaponizing the debt ceiling, saying it's a precedent that will forever haunt the nation. One party can use the full faith and credit of the United States as a hostage to pass their widely unpopular ideas. Adding, someday, hopefully not in my lifetime, but someday there will be a Republican president. And you will remember this moment because what you are trying to do is get things enacted that you could not get done through regular order. Ben Thomas, Washington

Debt ceiling takeaways: Biden's invite to liberal skeptics to 'talk to me,' McCarthy's balancing act
"Congress is back and topping the agenda is a debt ceiling deal. No one claims to really like. I'm Ben Thomas with a closer look. Democrats who have reservations about this compromise bill. Talk to me. President Biden acknowledges not all Democrats, particularly those on the left, may vote for the package, Congress is taking up. But I spoke to a whole bunch of people and it feels good. We'll see when the votes start. His debt ceiling deal with House speaker Kevin McCarthy runs 99 pages, both can point to provisions they can call victories, funding medical care for veterans and changing work requirements for government aid and streamlining environmental reviews for energy projects. But each side has a job to do to win over enough lawmakers in their parties to pass it. Some conservatives are concerned the deal doesn't cut future deficits enough. Meanwhile, Democrats have been worried about those changes to programs like food stamps. Ben Thomas, Washington

We are doing everything possible to accelerate the delivery of these of these tanks. Defense secretary Lloyd Austin telling a Senate committee the Abrams tanks have arrived in Germany slightly ahead of schedule. The Ukrainians can begin training on this capability. Abrams tanks are being built specifically for Ukraine. The training is the most lethal new layer of combat instruction the U.S. is providing, giving Ukrainian troops the best chance to overwhelm and punch through Russia's battle lines. By the time they complete that training, the tanks will be available for them to use. But as for the timing on that, early fall is a projection. Ben Thomas, Washington

Biden to huddle with top donors as 2024 effort kicks off

I'm Ben Thomas with the latest. Judiciary committee chairman dick Durbin invited Roberts testimony after ProPublica detailed a close relationship between justice clarence Thomas and a conservative donor, but nonprofit investigative journalism organization reported Harlan crow had purchased properties belonging to Thomas and his family in a transaction worth more than $100,000, but that Thomas never reported. Report: Thomas sold real estate to donor, didn't report deal
"More details are emerging of the relationship between Supreme Court Justice clarence Thomas and a major conservative political donor. I'm Ben Thomas with the latest. The revelations come from the nonprofit investigative journalism organization, ProPublica, citing state tax documents and property deeds, ProPublica reports Harlan Crowe purchased three properties belonging to Thomas and his family, the home in Savannah, Georgia, where Thomas mother was living, along with two nearby vacant lots. The price was a little more than $133,000. Thomas mother remained living in the home, which soon underwent tens of thousands of dollars in renovations. Federal officials are required to disclose details of most real estate transactions valued at more than $1000. Thomas would not have been required to report the purchase if the property was his or his spouse's primary personal residence, but that does not apply in this case. And Thomas did not report it. Crowe says he approached Thomas about the purchase with an eye toward creating a museum dedicated to telling the story of the nation's second black Supreme Court Justice. US, Ukraine say many war secrets safe from intel leaks
"Ukraine's leaders are downplaying the impact the leak of U.S. intelligence documents could have on their military operations. I'm Ben Thomas with the closer look. Key reason, Ukraine has long held back sharing its most sensitive operational information, doubting Washington's ability to keep their secrets safe. Ukrainian and U.S. officials maintain only Ukrainians have the details of certain battle plans and other operational information. Ukraine's deputy defense minister saying only a very narrow circle of people know. So the leak, including some military assessments of Ukraine's battlefield strengths and weaknesses against Russia, likely has not been enough, at least so far, to change the course of the war. Biden ends COVID national emergency after Congress acts
"The national emergency over the COVID-19 pandemic has officially ended. I'm Ben Thomas with the latest. President Biden signed a bipartisan congressional resolution bringing the national emergency to a close behind closed doors. More than 197 House Democrats voted against it, and Biden himself had publicly opposed it, but the measure passed the Senate by a 68 23 vote last month, and Biden let lawmakers know he would sign it. The national emergency allowed the government to take sweeping steps to respond to the virus and support the country's economic health and welfare systems. Some of the emergency measures have already been successfully wound down, while others are still being phased out. However, the public health emergency which underpins immigration restrictions at the U.S. Mexico border remains in effect. For now, it is set to expire on May 11th, Ben Thomas, Washington.

At a hearing of the House armed services committee, milley, and defense secretary Lloyd Austin, they repeated questions about the impact the war is having on The Pentagon, as it supplies Ukraine with much of the ammunition it needs to fend off Russian forces. They say the conflict has pushed the U.S. to increase production rates and reevaluate how much of a stockpile is really needed. Veterans testify of 'catastrophic' impact of Afghan collapse
"A house panel has heard firsthand testimony from active service members and veterans on the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021. I'm Ben Thomas, with some of what they had to say. For millions of people in Afghanistan and the U.S. Aiden Gunderson served as an army medic during the evacuation, he says he's plagued by the memories. I see the faces of all the people we can not save all those that we left behind. The majority of witnesses argued blamed for the fall of Kabul touches every presidential administration from George W. Bush to Joe Biden, retired green beret, lieutenant colonel David Scott Mann. America is building a nasty reputation from multi generational systemic abandonment of our allies that we leave as smoldering human wreckage from the montagnards of Vietnam to the Kurds in Syria. Testimony focused not on the decision to withdraw, but on what witnesses described as a desperate attempt to rescue American citizens in Afghan allies with little planning and inadequate support. Tyler Vargas Andrews then a marine sergeant detailed the horror after suicide bombers attacked the crowds at Kabul airport. He now wears a prosthetic arm to withdraw was a catastrophe in my opinion. And there was an inexcusable lack of accountability and negligence and they implored Congress to help the allies left behind. Pence won’t say whether he'd support Trump as 2024 nominee
"Former vice president Mike Pence isn't saying whether he'd bank Donald Trump if his former boss were to be the Republican presidential nominee in 2024. I'm Ben Thomas, with what he had to say to AP national political reporter Meg canard in an exclusive interview. I've said many times, I think we'll have better choices. Pence tells the AP Trump was the right candidate to take on Hillary Clinton in 2016, but I think we live in a different time. And it calls for different leadership. Widely expected to run himself, Pence offers this assessment of what voters will want in 2024. The American people want us to return to the policies of the Trump Pence administration. But I think they want to see leadership. That reflects more of the character of the American people, namely the commitment to principle and the civility that Americans show each other every day. The former vice president is not ready to declare his candidacy, but if he does run, he says he'll be true to himself. I'll be me. I'll speak plainly about America's leadership in the world. And our obligations to be the arsenal of democracy. I'll speak plainly about my long history of championing, limited government, fiscal discipline. And I'll speak plainly about our commitment to traditional values, including the right to life. And will he support the nominee, whoever that may be? I trust our voters to choose the right standard Barrett, the right time who will lead us to victory. Not just for our party, but for the country in 2024. Ben Thomas, Washington

Biden in State of Union exhorts Congress: 'Finish the job'
"President Biden exhorted Republicans in his State of the Union address to work with him to finish the job of rebuilding the economy in uniting the nation. I'm Ben Thomas with a look at his remarks. I have the high privilege and the stink honor to present to you the president of the United States. A speaker Kevin McCarthy introducing President Biden to a joint session of Congress. The president offered a reassuring assessment of the nation's condition. Two years ago, democracy faced his greatest threat to the Civil War and today, though bruised our democracy remains unbowed and unbroken. Anti says we're ready the next chapter of the great American story, a story of progress and resilience. For made an appeal to Republicans. Yes, we disagreed plenty. And yes, there were times when Democrats went alone. But time and again, Democrats and Republicans came together. Still, there was some heckling from the Republican side, such as when he said some Republicans want Medicare and social security to sunset. I'm not saying it's a majority. Republicans jump to their feet to object. I'm not saying there's a majority of you. I don't even think it's even a significant, but it's being proposed by individuals. I'm not politely not naming them, but it's being proposed by some of you. Look, folks. But elsewhere in his remarks, Biden pointed to bipartisan progress on issues like infrastructure. I think the people sent us a clear message. Fighting for the sake of fighting, power for the sake of power, conflict for the sake of conflict, gets us nowhere to restore the soul of this nation, to rebuild the backbone of America. That was the House speaker last week at The White House after meeting with Biden on raising the nation's borrowing limit. Ahead of the president's State of the Union address, McCarthy told reporters our debt is now a greater burden than it has been at any time since World War II.
