You're at the end of your rope, and you say or do something, you end up regretting. All you need to do is say, I'm sorry, right? Not quite. A real effective apology takes much more than that. Imagine you're in a conflict with someone you care about and you know exactly what to do to smooth it all over. Apologize. But sometimes that can be really hard for us to do. Our guest today is Sam dugan, a public defender in Salt Lake City, Utah. She and her husband Nate were actually on our show last year when they tried to practice where they chronicled three funny things that happened to them each day. This time, Sam tried our making an effective apology practice, but with a twist. We added on a mindful breathing practice to the start of it. So first, you use your breath to center yourself in the present moment. And then you go through the steps of apologizing. You know, I know you're really working hard, Sam, and things are stressful, but thanks for coming back. Yeah, thanks for having me. I appreciate it. I loved your show on laughter and it was so fun to hear. You guys shared laughter, but now you're turning to a different issue in the realm of happiness, which is making a mindful apology, I'm curious, who did you decide to apologize to and why that choice? Yeah, so I decided to apologize to my husband meet. A myriad of reasons. Beginning with? Beginning with so we got a puppy and she is a total delight, but it just adds more stress, which I know can sound sort of trivial, but like that is our life right now is we have three dogs and we work a lot. We have been together for a long time too, and so I think it's since high school. Yes, since high school. And so it's sometimes easier to be just not as mindful about being kind to him when he should be the person I'm like the most kind too. So I have to ask, though, we've got to get into the instigator of this apology, was it like something specific that he did and said or didn't say or was it just the fact that he exists that led you to apologize? Yeah, so honestly, it was just the fact that he existed. I was just stressed out with work and sort of building up to this trial and had a lot of stuff going on and then coupled with not really sleeping very well and then adding an additional puppy to an already sort of chaotic dog situation. And before we walk through the exercise, what was the moment in which he thought like, maybe I should apologize for snapping at need for his existence? I was sitting at our kitchen table and it was evening and I think I was working. I think he brought me something and I had a realization of like, you know, Sam, you have not been your best self. The steps for this practice are to first acknowledge what you did, provide an explanation, not an excuse. And then express your remorse and try to do something if possible to make amends. We also added a mindful breathing practice to all of this, how'd it go? Yeah, so I did a box breath, which is where you inhale for X amount of seconds, hold it for X amount of seconds, exhale for X amount of seconds. And I did 7 because I like the numbers of it. And so inhaled for 7 seconds, held it for 7 seconds, and then exhaled for 7 seconds. And I did it a few times. I didn't do it ten times because that felt a little long for this level. I forgot what I was gonna do. But breathing is just so helpful and you certainly feel or I certainly feel my stress level decrease after about 5 box breaths. It was helpful to take the breaths, be mindful because it puts you in your body more, which also I think makes you feel a little more vulnerable because you're not like dissociating from discomfort. But it's nice too because it's something you can do anywhere and it doesn't require skills. You literally just have to breathe and be aware of it. And that's cool 'cause it's accessible to anybody. And then I was like, come here, I need to apologize to you, and then I recorded it. So, Nate, are you ready to be apologized to? Weird. So I have not been very kind to you these past few weeks, 'cause I feel like you're not as anxious as I am about the puppy. Don't laugh about the puppy and Pinto. And if yelled at you and Ben short with you, which is not kind or fair, and so I do sorry that I have yelled at you on more than one occasion. About the puppy and not.

On a regular basis, I end up being the one learning new words from my students. Today's word for our podcast episode is one of those words that I learned from a student of mine. Ben. No, not the student. And I'm not talking about the biblical name Ben, short for Benjamin. Nor am I talking about the way I and some other people pronounce the past participle form of the verb to be. Hey, I can't help my accent. Oh, in a very grown-up voice. Now, what have you been doing to yourself? No, I'm actually talking about the word BEN Ben, lower case, the only lower case entries in both Oxford and merriam Webster that relate to several words and definitions. All labeled as Scottish English. Let's look at the definitions and then get down to the bottom of this, shall we? Let's start with Oxford. Two separate entries both labeled Scottish, both with an origin dating to the late 18th century. The first Ben a high mountain or mountain peak, as in Ben Nevis, which is the highest mountain in Scotland. The second Ben refers to the inner room in a two roomed cottage. As in I'll go to sleep in the Ben. So the first definition Ben, as a high mountain or mountain peak, can be traced to a Gaelic word, which I've heard pronounced as Bain. One source gives a very specific date of 1788 for entry into the English lexicon. Now without any other information given as to why this specific date, 1788 is referenced, I can then only speculate, and therefore won't even bother. However, our second definition of Ben BEN to describe the inner room in a two roomed cottage is most certainly related to the third definition of Ben that we can find in the merriam Webster dictionary, which is also listed as Scottish and as a synonym for within. Listed both as an adverb and preposition, which could lead to silly sounding sentences, such as I am Ben the Ben. In other words, I am within the inner room of a two room cottage. Alongside within, I've also dug up inside as a synonym for this Ben. So within or inside, this Ben is a dialect variant of the middle English bin, which is roughly the same as within or inside in Modern English. Now let's have some fun with language. Remember how I said this ties to our inner room of the simple two roomed cottage? So we have Ben because it is the inner room of the cottage. Ben being another word for inside, or within. Well, any guesses on what the Scots sometimes call the outer room of these small cottages. B UT, but a but. For anyone who's been through Scotland or is from Scotland, you may have seen a sign for a button Ben. But this type of small cottage. For you see, but the popular conjunction we use today all the time, has its origin in an old English word that would now in Modern English be closer to the use of the words outside and without. Now you know, button Ben comes from two words that can also mean inside and outside. So you have the inside room of the cottage and the outside room together. To form a butt and Ben. An entry listed as archaic in Oxford gives us a definition of butt defined as without the example given being this phrase. It never rains, but it pours.
