AJ Benza: Fame is a Bitch
Farewell Ben Raffensperger
"And then I was very sad to see Ben Ben Roethlisberger on Monday Night Football walk off. It's his last time he's gonna play at Heinz field in Pittsburgh and he's had an 18 year career and not all of it was great, but you know, he's Big Ben. He's had his ups and downs, but he won a Super Bowl and it was touching to see him walk away. They were just a couple of exits the last few days that really got to me. And his emotional as I was last night, I sat up and I watched Big Ben walk off that field. And I watched him talk to the reporter who was trying to encapsulate what he must have felt. And you know, he took a lap around the stadium just to touch people's hands. It was very touching.

Behind the Steel Curtain
"ben rothlisberger" Discussed on Behind the Steel Curtain
"The bengals one of the better single high safety in the league in jessie bates He's one of the top single high safety in the nfl Minkah fitzpatrick i think is a better overall player. But i would put bates ahead of patrick. If you're only doing like a cover one where you got one. Deep safety betas better. He covers a lot of ground. He's very smart about how he moves. And we're facing that we're facing. That would at a time where the steelers are being successfully defended by single safeties. Because we're not. Seeing ben rothlisberger and these wide receivers beat the deep reliably enough to make them consider putting two guys back there. And i brought this up because a lot because that's what we used to always see for. Ben rothlisberger ben. Rothlisberger was exactly that do that. If you put single high stakes especially against the bengals the bengals used to do it. Martavis bryant they put a guy out in man on martavis bryant with just one just one safety deep and ben would absolutely destroy them throughout the game until they backed off a second saiki to put multiple players deep. He always did that. That was one of his great strength. That's why the pump fake was so dangerous and how he looked safety so dangerous because if you played single high safety and we had a deep threat on the outside you were toast like you're just if if if that wide receiver wants his release you're done and right now. The steelers have one of the better threats. They've had i think the best. Threaten chase capel. They've had since mike wallace and yet it's not working because you don't see don't see see ben challenging the free safety and all right now you see all of throws out to the sideline out like hey taste goat young joe jump over guy including pass this last game where chase clayton. We'll have the jump over the cornerback. Because ben through to the leverage of the cornerback when there was no one in the middle. And you're just like that's you know is this is this is that one bad throw. Is that one bad read. But it's been two seasons of this. You know this is the second season of this and you really have to start asking like hey is is this now ben rothlisberger. Is this thirty nine year. Old ben rothlisberger at is he not going to be able to to carry a team. That doesn't have an offensive line. The he can't do that then. The offensive line has to get it together or this offense is going to be. I mean right now. The offense is awful. Our offense is is kind of trash. And is it going to get better. That's like something either quarterback or the offensive line get drastically better than they have been recently. And that's that's a big question. Mark this important conversation That i think we need to continue here you look at the steelers offense therefore deep it receiver. I don't know how many teams can rival that they're tight ends. I generally think they got a dude and pat far. And i still think eric. Rania has his talents. Nausea is a really really good running back prospect. At honestly. I feel like if you stuck him on the browns He up there with the league. Leader said behind any good offense align really. He looks all that but he's getting eaten alive by By poor performances. In front of him You mentioned ben rothlisberger specifically could we be looking at. What is kind of the end here for big. Ben is this. Is this training in the wrong direction. Is there anything he can do. Or is the hay in the barn really and it's time to just kind of take the old horse round back. Wow well white. Michael taken a little farther than the i would. Just let him retire. You know i'm personally not for capital funds. I'm sorry i understand your analogy. I just i'm i'm messing with you I i think we're there. You know like last season peyton manning. We're not that bad with ben. Ben is not what peyton manning was his very last season where they won the super bowl in spite of him of but also this team with that offensive line like you said we have a ton of skill position talent. We have a really young offensive. Line that right now each. You know it's like we've got a souped up sports car But the offensive line is the engine and the engine is is unreliable in the the driver is is a little old in his. You know puttering around. It's it's not a performance gar at this point because it doesn't it doesn't have a great driver and it doesn't have a great engine I think is the offensive line can get it together. This team can still be some. That's where we've been this whole season. I'm sticking with that if this offensive line can get together and get get become a good offensive line before ben rothlisberger gets hurt then then. This team can be something if not. You're dealing with an offensive line. That is is not good enough and a quarterback that needs a good offensive line to be good. And i think he can still be great if he has that offensive line. I think at this point of his career. Those hits hurt enough. They stick with him you know. And and they carry from game to game. He's not he's got a peck injury. He doesn't already got it like he's just you know. Your old was argued that your body doesn't heal like it used to. You're gonna be sore is going to hints are gonna gonna wear and they're going to build up the bangs and little little problems are going to build up more than they used to and so this very very well could be could be it. A we looked bleak. One like we had a defense could carry this team until that point but then you know you lose some players and it's not that defense anymore it can't carry it. I don't know. I don't know it's really weird place. Look at this bengals game. And i'm like you know this could be get right game for the steelers because it's the bengals because it's another game you know heinz field or we could get a couple of players back we you know we have. We have their coach. I think we have him pretty much figured out Unless he changes things up but again martinez added a new threat with the deep ball. I'd like to. I don't know where we are in this game. It has to be a get right game or this season is in real trouble now. We are approaching the first half hour mark of our show here today so before we get to our special guests on. I'm curious what your final score can. Thoughts are after the steelers second home game of the year against the cincinnati bengals. I oh man.

"We'll the steelers are one of many teams that are dealing with injuries. This season and head coach. Mike tomlin said that ben rothlisberger is the latest to be added to that list. Ben has a as a pack injury of some kind on his left. Pack that could affect him from a preparation standpoint Don't have any idea how much i sit here right now. But we better be ready to be adjustable in in deal with that. I like that adjustable. We have to be ready to be adjustable. Perfect word there. You might think he's great. He's great but is not a great situation for the steelers albeit not terribly surprising when we saw it last week. He looked old against buffalo like he in week. One of the best off season ever. Yeah he looked like an old man moving out of the pocket of the off season or the preseason. I should say. I don't know it was making the preseason team in look great ben fast chain shoot harvests mood the moon could be sucking the water out of his pictorials nd because of his lack of diet and regimen. I started. that's really funny. I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do with dealers. I i would feel better about this situation if they were able to run the ball but they're not so i mean not at all. Yeah can't run the ball. You have today watts. It is so their offense. It's say it's the worst i've seen. It's the worst..

"Remember taste klay pool in the end zone reaching back up over the defensive back trying to catch a ball hands on it. But as he's coming down he doesn't really have it well secured and the defensive back has his hands in there as able swatted away. You hear a lot of man chase who got to be the guy who could bring that ball down but when you watch that play this is the play i put up on my twitter feed it's fantasy skippy talk about. I gave you that in the first half but it's also on my twitter. Feed this one if you look at it. There's no deep help at all. The cornerback has outside leverage right. And there's no one in the middle of the field. The two other deep defenders are both on other receivers and they're nowhere near the ball. Nowhere near tastes. Play pool and ben rothlisberger seeing chase klay pool running up the sideline inside of the defensive backs. The defensive back has outside leverage on tape pool throws it outside ben. Rothlisberger throws it into the coverage into the defenders leverage. Meaning as klay pool has to physically position himself against this cornerback and jump up over the quarterback to bring the ball. In if ben rothlisberger had placed that ball inside chase cleveland's walking into that end zone with a touchdown like mike wallis martavis bryant sammie coates. Ab all these guys used to jews. You did it a couple of times in two thousand seventeen then run. Those routes and ben would hit them between the safety and the corner. What we're seeing this seat year we saw last year. Ben rothlisberger is not willing to take those shots when the cornerback has is outside and his receivers inside of him going up the field and there's a single deep safety or and that play while when there wasn't a single deep safety there was no deep help. He doesn't take those shots. He hasn't been taking those shots very much. I don't know if it's a matter if he doesn't trust his arm. I don't know if it's a matter of he's not seen it will. I mean he's thirty nine. We know his skills have diminish. We know he's not the same quarterback he was even in two thousand seventeen with an arm injury time off and he's older one away the ways that showing up is ben rothlisberger. Not taking those shots. There was a a thing on the. Nfl's next gen stats. Or they showed the passing charts. And ben rothlisberger had zero throws to the deep metal zero and he hasn't had many the last two seasons. If you were saying why. What's wrong with the offense. What are they doing. Why aren't they throwing deepens. Npr saying is because ben rothlisberger can't throw a ball more than seventeen inches. Will the the truth of it is teams are playing single. Deep safety and ben rothlisberger is not willing to task that deep safety..

"On the first one is in pass protection. The steelers offensive line did pretty good. They did pretty good. Dan moore gave up a sack that was strip sacked. That was that was. He got. Beat pretty badly on that one. He recovered nicely as always. He has long arms and he uses them well so even when he gets himself in a bad spot. Those long arms can help if you remember the plan talking about the the defensive end got ben from behind reached around and slap. The ball out does because ben rothlisberger could see dan. We're getting beat. Dan moore was able to push the guy back behind. Ben rothlisberger and ben rothlisberger was able to step up but then more wasn't able to follow through and keep any kind of control of the the defensive end after he'd gotten beat after he pushes him back. Ej he's still can't get any control of the play and the guys able to come up and stripped the ball. There was a couple more times where you're you're looking at it saying okay that's trae. Turner got beat their core had a pretty rough game but mostly they kept ben pretty clean especially the interior the interior of the pocket. Now there were sometimes blitzes up the middle. got them. okay they didn't pick up every blitz up the middle perfectly but for the most part when they're just man on man. the interior defense did pretty interior offensive. Line did pretty well keeping benz pocket. They're better than i expected. Not anywhere close to what the standard has been in the past when david decastro markey's pouncey ramon foster ormat filer. We're all healthy. When those guys are healthy and playing well it was a totally different totally different matter but these were first game. They did pretty good. Secondly i want to say about the offense of lines. Don't blame the offensive line for the run game. Run game wasn't there in week one but not much of that. Blame falls on the offensive line. The buffalo bills were packing the box. They were putting everyone up. Close to the line of scrimmage there were plays on second and eight first and ten second and you can count ten defenders within three yards. Of the line of scrimmage ten meaning they had ten way up on the line and one deep they were playing press on the on the receivers with one deep safety. You have to beat that in the passing game they are straight out telling you we're here to stuff your little short passes we're here to stuff your screen passes to stuff your run game. You're gonna have to throw over them and beat them deep. The steelers were not able to do that. The bills kept players up on the line and even when the offensive line made all their blocks. The tight ends made their blocks. You would still see someone just running free because you don't have enough people to account for them all so that is something we have to look to in the future and see how the how the run game improves. But really. it's on the passing game to make teams pay for that and that sets up for the next stage. Which is ben rothlisberger. Ben was not the best early in this game. You could tell he. I don't know if it was nerves. I don't know if it was just a little bit old old man adrenaline. I don't know what it was. But he was off target on a lot of short throats and the ones that hurt. The most in my mind were the late. Throws the nausea harris were harris slips out. He's wide open and then just throws it over his head to the point that you see now noisy. Here's with no one around him and he's jumping and reaching out just to get a single hand on the ball. I mean even if he catches that you're not getting anywhere because he spent all his effort just trying to haul in the football. If ben can get those passes on target harris can make something happen. We saw his longest gain. Preseason was off the past like that when he's in the open field..

"Granted ben was throwing the ball really fast in man. I was reading an article today behind the curtain dot com. Your one stop shop for often. Pittsburgh steelers it was by the great k. T smith also known as china shop which stands for cliff. Hair is still a punk and he did a it was three keys to victory for the steelers so this is kind of kind of part of this as well but i was watching some of those clips last year and my goodness i was watched the offensive line. And it's at the snap of the ball. They had such a big backtrack. They were just getting. i mean. Just bull rushed. Ben rothlisberger catch. Snap throw the ball because the guys were right there. It's like they did did nothing but just give ground give ground and not be physical at all. I'm hoping that's not the case anymore. But when. I said that they're allowed to give up one second. I'll say that's okay. That's because buffalo last year when they got two or more sacks in a game they were eleven in one there are eleven and one last year so those are some things that offense needs to do get ninety yards rushing. Don't turn the ball over and make sure you're protecting ben rothlisberger everything else. It would be great but it wasn't enough of a correlation to say they. It was a really big difference maker to be one of those quote unquote jackpot numbers. So let's the defense fish have a little bit more. The notes three of them so that was three for the offense. Let's look at three for the defense. The defense three hundred okay. This is sparta. no not that. Three hundred three hundred passing yards game last season when buffalo.

"We're going to start with tyler. Murray orlovsky what are you got. Yeah i i hated column in cardinals offensive performance because it was about communication or lack thereof. It seemed every passing. Play was the lack of communication between him and his receivers. I thought you were going to do this but you did this or i expected that or you did this. The lack of communication between the offensive line and running back. This year three tyler. This is your three cliff at some point. You guys got to be upset about this or ticked off about it or barest about your season starts in two weeks. It's gotta be better communicate. Great there might t. What did you see from your guy. Ben rothlisberger who wouldn't be criticized as the great ben. Ross for people really good. Not offense looked very comfortable there. We're going against detroit again. They're trying replace at least three. Maybe four offense wineman if it looks like seven hundred seven ten watts. I got a great year. But i'm still skeptical about that option of wine. That's what we're going to see if they can maintain a level of effectiveness. Macho what you see from zach wilson man that dude zach wilson lutes best show like that look really really good even before you saw. The comments saying he relates his game after aaron rodgers. You watch the tape you say that. That looks like aaron rodgers. i was blown away not only by this week but also by last week. of what. Zach wilson. Did my only issue is. Will he be over the able to overcome the team and the management around. I chose not the only one excited. About zach wilson. Aaron rodgers had this to say during the game. He's a good young kid as a nice disposition selling. Oh man that kid. Control the heck out of the ball and that was a nice one down. The right sideline at the end of the person. I'm so excited for what he can do. In this league remember the packers and jets had joined practices.

"The performance. Do you feel like this changed your outlook on the season. So i gave three options. One option was excuse me. They'll be better so in other words after the victory in the way that they performed on saturday night the steelers will actually be better than what we thought going into that game the other option was they'll be about the same and then the third option is they will stink. There's always people that are. Just either they do it. Just a click on it. Or i don't know head over a thousand votes. Hasn't been up that long only a few hours at the moment of this being recorded and at the time fifty eight point nine percent of people that voted said that they think that after that game on saturday night against detroit that the steelers will be better in twenty twenty one than what they thought. So something happened. Whether it was offensively. I guarantee is ostensibly. They did something the steelers that is did something that they're like. Wow this team could actually be pretty good. Maybe it was harris catch and run. Maybe it was ben rothlisberger showing some arm strength through the past. Deonte johnson down the field. Maybe it was the fact that they were able to run the ball a little bit. I don't know i don't know about the same. As thirty seven point nine percents a thirty seven point. Nine percent of people said that their expectations haven't really changed too much. they're about the same and then of course there's the three point one percent that said they're gonna stink. Of course there's a three point one percent that say they're going to stink so for me. I think that my expectations aren't really changed at all. I thought that the steelers team is a double digit win team. Before the preseason even started that was my prediction. I thought that they could at least win. Ten eleven even more games than that and what they're doing right now. They're validating what. I thought when we started this whole process there. Validating the fact that okay. When i look at this team now i see a team that it could do some damage that is going to be more competitive even in this tough schedule than maybe we thought if they can stay healthy and that's a huge if we always know that but still think about that. Heavier expectations changed tough question. That's a tough question. But i'll tell you what we're gonna talk winners and losers rate when we get back from this big as well as a finnish. That's i gotta get something off my chest kind of embarrassing..

"I really do because it'll make good content all right michael. Thanks a lot. I appreciate my pleasure. Alright pittsburgh steelers fans Thank you again for michael back to join every friday. It's going to be a lot of fun throughout the season when we do our game. Picks and things like that We'll be talking a lot of trash. I it's just it's just fun. I enjoy having him on the show. And i thank you for that also my heart to heart. I wanna finish this up with a quick hard to heart here. We have been office burger thirty nine years old entering year. Eighteen in the nfl. I feel like i say this every year. But i really wanna make sure i have as is it. Every season is as much as i can remember in. That is enjoy the time that you have with ben roths runner center. It's going to end at some point. Maybe it's after this year. Maybe it's not we don't know but every great player eventually has the point where they are done doesn't always necessarily mean that they have to end on a sour note that they are done when they can't physically do it anymore but every professional player eventually says i'm going to call it a career and we know that that time is closer than it is further away with rothlisberger and so i wanna just make sure that as the steeler fans prepare for this third preseason game as steeler fans prepare for this season understand in remember what two thousand nineteen was like. We all wanna talk about the next quarterback. Is it dwayne haskins. Is it mason. Rudolph not that. They are long-term. Answer but who would be the next big who would be the successor. A quarterback is much as i love debating that and talking about it. I'm not looking forward to that either. I'm really not i. I'm a big ben rothlisberger fan. And i really don't want to see him go anytime soon. I hope he plays well. I hope he continues to play. Well and heck. I would be fine welcoming him back in two thousand twenty two if he proves he can still played a high level. But understand that even if you get frustrated with rothlisberger understand that it's going to end sooner than later in. Just show an appreciation that's it. That's a simple heart-to-heart. Appreciate big ben while you have him because when he's gone you end up him. I know my dad talked about it. When terry bradshaw eventually retired. It'll be the same thing in pittsburgh. When ben rothlisberger leaves you just hope they don't have that from bradshaw ben era which was just like. One jumbled. Mess does all right folks. That doesn't for me for this friday. I hope you have a great friday. I hope you have a great weekend plan. Hope you enjoy the game on saturday. Make sure you check me out on the post game. Show with brian. Anthony davis and dave scofield live on. Youtube will also be under audio side. And then i'll be back on monday to talk all things steelers especially winners. Losers from saturday's game. "And i want to see him be accurate when he's throwing the ball past fifteen yards because in today's nfl you to be able to Chunk out yards. And you got to do it quickly. So if ben dwayne haskins isn't able to throw the ball down the field really what use is he we seen him in washington throw some Some pretty brutal turnovers. When working down the field he cannot be so conservative. especially in this Training camp he needs to really kind of push to make this team make those aggressive place and sh- and prove that he can do it so that's what we need to see. How to duane. Haskins out of josh dobbs. If he can. Just keep up this consistency. I'd like there's no way that the steelers could possibly move on from him just by releasing him because he is proving to be a solid backup again. We know how much ben rothlisberger respects him We know what he can do with this feet if he can. Just be a guy. That sticks around on the roster. Someone ben can pick his brain on the sideline and heck if ben sitting out a game. That josh dobbs package that we saw a year ago. I thought was highly effective. If he's the number three quarterback. I would love josh dobbs package. en- games were if ben rothlisberger isn't the guy you could turn josh jobs for series for just a change of pace Number of place. It was very effective against the browns. And i kinda wanna see that. Continue now for mason. Rudolph what he needs to do is be more consistent and just be better in the pocket and that's something we've heard year in and year out with mason. He needs to be a guy that can work on his fetal but Hit the guys. When they're running the routes in the hands a hundred percent of the time he just needs to take that next step as a quarterback Just put it all together. He has the deep ball. He makes good decisions. He doesn't typically really throw a lot of turnovers aside from one browns game where he got. A helmet walked up the side of his head. He really doesn't turn the football over whole heck of a lot so if he can just be more consistent Continue to move the chains. Just be the the guy that he is but a little bit better. I think he could be someone that is definitely at the very least a career backup and someone that kind of pushes for starts here and there. If there's a rookie somewhere down the line so that kind of wraps things up for the backup portion of the show the second half of the live mike will become coming up or rule. Fake focus on ben rothlisberger. What he can do in this twenty twenty one season and what we can expect from him really moving forward so stay tuned.

"Time that ben rothlisberger has learned a brand new offense which last year tom brady did that. It wasn't a big deal but there's been so much stability throughout his career and he's talked about how tough that's been you know in in reporting to camp last week he's talked about you know it's it's a lot different. I've had to learn a lot of new things animate. Yeah just fixing something on it. And i don't know what to make of them. They're talking about this. This is going to be a really different offense. I saw a note from one of the beat writers about. I think it was a a screen. Pass that the johnson took seventy yards. And now as a you know one of the things they talked about was how they're going to incorporate more screen passes into the game more of ben rothlisberger under center rather than out of the shotgun. More play action. Which is something they really haven't done over the last couple of seasons which is all say that there's a lot of uncertainty around the steelers offense that doesn't mean the steelers offense is going to be bad but uncertainty is almost worse than knowing. The team is going to be bad. Because i think this team could go in a lot of different directions and could be an awesome offense. How confident are you. You both have deontay. Johnson as the top seed wide receiver and rankings. Barely be a. Okay so how confident are you that your ranking of the steelers wide receivers is accurate zero. I'm actually pretty confident. In that part. I i'm i'm very confident. Deontay johnson believe the steelers and targets. When he's healthy. That's that's the part. I'm confident last year. In terms of fantasy points per game it was really really close between deontay. Juju juju right yeah Juju actually ahead of them in format. You know what. I'm gonna say right put. Didn't johnson leave games early with injuries and it was fourteen point nine for fourteen point six for juju but deonte did leave two games with injuries. He was benched in another. He had so many more targets than everybody else when he was on the field healthy okay. Let's move on to our next thing here. It's heats favorites. That he's go. "Thank you for your support for this program. We've had plenty of holdouts down through the years in players who forced their way out of town. But there really hasn't been a situation like to sean watson's in houston. He doesn't want to be there and although they haven't really said it. There's a good chance. The texans don't want him there either yet. He reported to camp and at the beginning of the off. Season watson made it abundantly clear. He wanted out. Texans didn't wanna listen to trade offers back then then. The serious civil suits came out against watson for sexual misconduct. And we don't know what the actions will be of the nfl. Moving forward the precedent for the situation probably doesn't exactly apply when ben rothlisberger was accused of sexual misconduct. The nfl suspended him for four games. I think it was six. And then they bumped it back to four but he wanted to be in pittsburgh and the steelers still wanted him. And that's a far cry from what we have with the texans. So what's next the league. Step in to the texans trade him. Is there any chance he stays in. Houston we're gonna find out really soon but you might wanna to trade him. If i'm miami denver whoever might be philadelphia carolina. I got to know a couple of things first of all. Is he going to settle these civil suits and is the nfl going to punish them. And then i'm gonna ask okay. What do you form unless you say. "Dan they just have to be. They have to be much more efficient being able to give themselves a chance to get into second short third and short type of situations and they have to be able to capture the line. It's something that they've been able to do going back years decades and i think this this change. I don't want to really say this. Change in philosophy but kinda like this kind of re establishing this philosophy is coming from the very top of this organization. Canada offense coordinator as talked about the fact that not only has mike tomlin told him that this is they want to be this year as far as the line discrimination being someone that can really dominate running the running the football that ownership that mr ruining wants this to be how this team really goes about. Its business that he wants them to be much more physical. He doesn't necessarily want them to be a team. That is constantly four or tied in bags or four wives and one running back or three wise in a tiny number and just throwing the football players. They don't wanna be that from dna from a philosophical perspective. We'll see whether or not they had the personnel to be able to do it up front and what it's going to look like remember. They had to change ben rothlisberger contract to get him back and under the cap this year. How do you think he will perform for the steelers twenty one. I think he'll play. Well i mean. I think you know this idea that he was horrible last year. Which i feel like i keep hearing. Don't think that that was the case. I mean the guy through thirty three touchdowns in ten picks just. So we're clear like justin. Herbert threw thirty one touchdowns in ten picks collar murray twenty six and twelve. Matthew stafford twenty six in ten ben. Rothlisberger is giving you a chance to win. And by the way he did it and we've established it on this show but he did it behind a bad office of line and a team that was not running the football well so now pair him with mike tomlin awesome defense a good front office that makes good personnel decisions. I don't think that that ben rothlisberger has done even when so many guys that were his contemporaries that came in the league. Same time of him him. Even those guys are done tim. I'm really curious to see how. What kind of motivation. We see behind. Ben this season as well. Will he be the type of guy who kind of takes what has been almost unequivocal doubt across the board. Except for maybe what you're saying about his potential for this season. I i think that he is the type who will sort of harness that and maybe turn it into something worthwhile. We'll find out. I mean i. I thought he was coming back when we saw the photo of them. Looked much slimmer. I know that was big. Talk on social media. But i mean pretty much look the same the press conference. Maybe just a little beard trim. So maybe that's not necessarily exactly. Ovationhair says different catholic is different so obviously he looks different. It'd be big ben's eight little different doesn't really look different but the shirt says different. So that's what we go on.

They take a beating by far Ben rothlisberger play in the wrong direction after the strong. Start this past season. Twenty twenty one will be A big year for him should he finished his career in pittsburgh. It'd be the most seasons by a quarterback all with the same franchise. Nfl history all right. Let's talk about this division right now. We got lamar jackson baker. Mayfield joe borough is. I can't believe i'm asking us. It feels very disrespectful. But you know where i'm going is is big ben. Even though he's all slim eighteen years in is he the worst quarterback in the afc north mutt at all. I mean listen listen. Greatness comes in every shape and size and much like john is big ben. Greatness won't be appreciated until he's gone then you're talking about a guy that's a two-time super bowl. Mvp a two time superbowl champion. A bone of hall of fame..

"The hasn't been understand but he has had quite a career for them. You know kevin gausman is leading the majors. Era i wait. He has a better area than program. Doesn't qualify right now because the amount of innings okay but even gals was like one point. Something yeah the komo right. Exactly yes exactly right stiffen baltimore freezing anytime the yankees needed to you. Know get off. The schneider run guzman out there. Rip them apart. Guzman that cold. Yes jerry jones. We played you some last hour. State of the cowboys they report to oxnard california for training camp so in the midst of his opening statement which i still haven't even gotten through on and on and on he's breaking down now their vaccine numbers on the t. We have nanny players here. We have a handful that in and have a still to commit to this. A handful without a hand is five. And that's that's if he in that several of in my mind of that finger five on their way to a potentially have their vaccine. So that's where we all you got. All that is sure. Basically he's saying guys having gotten vaccinated and that may change in short order just took him a while to a lot of talk about fingers and hands and sounds like he wants. Everybody vaccinated right which is trying. But if the number is seventy percent that means twenty-seven guys are not vaccinated not five. Yeah when did he say they're the number that was reported the other day because michael irvin said these guys are not committed to winning. The number was seventy percent because they want every team to be at least eighty five percent. That's gone on irving. i y. I guess an indirect way. Yeah it sounds like yeah. I could see him walking around the halls of the cowboys facility with the syringe. Ready to go trying to run into players takes tripping and falling. Sorry my bad. Here's a band aid. I'll see in three weeks. Did you see. I couldn't tell yesterday. Schefter tweeted that picture of ben rothlisberger reporting the camp. You see did see. Steelers reported the training camp today. Here's a lean mean. Ben rothlisberger showing for eighteenth. Nfl season..

Behind the Steel Curtain

"Then what they did the next week which was back to their typical starting lineup. So i will tell you this. Kevin dotson when he was in the lineup. You were looking at the steelers going over twenty points and the only game. The steelers lost with dotson in the lineup was week seventeen. So that's one thing to take from it and you're like oh yeah three one. That was weak. Seventeen numbers without ben rothlisberger and a lot of people still feel that the steelers wouldn't arrested everybody. They might have been facing a different opponent in the playoffs. Hindsight we know what it is. So that's something to think about with dotson coming back. It's really hard to judge a lot of stuff here with like big our troops because they basically played the whole time. So this was more looking at. I don't like to pick on the guy. But the steelers definitely had problems and ben rothlisberger felt like you had to throw the ball much faster when jc neighbor was in the lineup. So this offensive line for twenty twenty. One is going to really be the key. It's what is really going to come down to on this offense because one my last my last prediction for the steelers thirty predictions or thirty scenarios in thirty days on that myself a jeff hartmann did for the website. The last one i did was if ben rothlisberger has time. He's going to. He's going to push the ball deep down the field if the offensive line can give ben time. He's gonna throw it so my point. Is this week. When ben rothlisberger didn't play in twenty nineteen. We saw the throw everything short to throw everything. Short offense that the former offensive coordinator wanted to run without ben. Then then bends back and you've got a coordinated just wants to dump everything short then you have an offensive line at that late in the season was not protecting enough to give him time to throw of course is going to throw it short and now everyone wants to jump on the bandwagon of ben rothlisberger. He can't throw the ball deep. Oh okay you can say if you wanna say doesn't throw it you can't throw it well or doesn't do it. Well i'll take that argument. Say he can't do it. It's not factual. I mean all you have to do is look at the second half of that indie game and watching him throwing the ball down the field because he had time so it's not that he can't and i'm not saying he did a fantastic job of it but also when you're not having the most confidence in your line we can see that and then with no running game and everything to support it so who. There's a lots to take in with this. But i wanted to break it down. He had an idea of where things kind of started to fall apart with the steelers and how things were working with the offensive line and whether or not it was exactly what the problem was or not. I think it was a big combination of things. So i don't want to just lay it on one thing but if you wanted to look at this to see what part it played there. It was so i always to say this. I've got a. I've got a question. I got an answer for next week. I just wasn't able to get all the answer to it in time for this week. Show that that. I really am looking forward to answering next week. But i'm always looking for questions at st are superfan data on twitter or st l. Are superfan dead at gmail.com on the email side of things you can send me an email or message on twitter anytime asking stats question that i use on the show. "Good one. That's a great one lockdown corner amply another good one of the best one yet to watts. Got one wait too long. T. minutes t minus five minutes here guys. What do you think they're saying inside there right now. Holy shit. why are we doing this. You're probably afraid. No as jessica said it's totally safe. There's no reason to be nervous at all. Josh dobbs is good but he's also been in the league for two years. See this is not. We're not we're not doing eighties. Nineties thousands or even tens anymore. He's also an astrophysicist. Dan he should be going to space date mason rudolph's ex-girlfriend or something like that yes. They were both dating love. Triangles backup quarterbacks for the steelers. You would know this story just. You're just you know. The story is a steeler fan. I don't wanna talk about steelers Soap opera drama today. I'm having a mental health day. That had to be awkward there. All of that josh dobbs and mason rudolph dating the same woman while sharing a huddle Sharing a locker room and sharing not a lot politically. there's a not be how. Do you know so much about josh. Dodds is political leanings. You're just. I think that's an assumption on your part. Either way any huddles a tick talker actually expose ben rothlisberger. Who had an interesting pre. Snap motion that would determine whether or not it was a passer. Run juic- stan. I did not know he was. He's tipping his tapping. the dealer plays. Do you know this story jessica. Now tell us. Mike all right so it's at the oh ash. Nfl on tick-tock and rothlisberger as a very basic yet very clear pre-snap tell which gives away whether the next play will be a run or a pass it comes in a shotgun formation which is the majority of what the steelers us and here. It is when it's a run. Ben rothlisberger sands flat-footed before the sap when it's passed he lifts his left heel off the ground before the snap. He does this all the time. You can't can't be it can't. How many was that greg. One those big ones along gated coffee should cover one that it can't be that it cannot be that these all of these people spend this many hours studying this much film to get any kind of advantage and nobody on the steelers is noticing. Our quarterback is tipping all of the plays by lifting his left heel. That's a pass play. It cannot be that simple. These guys are in their computers all week. They're working twenty hours a week. This song coaching staff of people or the dolphins didn't notice tannahill tip in his plays eater. I don't think that was tannahill. I think he was the coaching staff. The snap count for an entire season was go for a pass and go for a run and you can hear clear as day watching at home and it was one hundred percent of the time that everyone just knew the dolphins cadence and they didn't make any effort to fix it over the course of the season and naturally mike sherman. The next season was coaching high school. Football so you guys believe this story. There feels like proof around the steelers story that ben roethlisberger who couldn't throw the football last year like i don't know if you saw drew brees here. He was asked by tariq whether or not he would ever consider coming back and he's like my arm feels right now worse than it ever has. I couldn't do anything. I could give you like a drive but because i haven't been doing all of the throws stopped. My arm feels terrible ben. Rothlisberger looked like exactly. How every quarterback. Before tom brady used to age he looked mike. You saw that game against the steelers. They were gained planning in a way that was ever. He wouldn't throw the ball down the field. It was all these really quick passes and all he would do is try and throw. The six yard passes all season and they started off the season. Well and then everyone realized. Oh no their quarterback is totally noodle arm. He had thirty three touchdowns ten interceptions which is good. But you're right in terms of yardage and he played fifteen games. He only through for thirty six hundred yard. Thirty eight hundred yards so which is low for also had a drop ball epidemic last year. like they just. He didn't have any help. I'm not defending ben rothlisberger. But last year he came back from this whole complete elbow reconstruction and probably shouldn't have even really been playing but he did just to god's point he put a decent amount of numbers but the steelers didn't have a balanced offense they were playing with james connor who is kind of banged up all year. Bunny snell was their backup and They also lost four players on defense to torn. acl's midway through the season around the time that their winning streak ended so there's a lot more to the steelers season just ben rothlisberger not being able to throw the ball more than twenty yards downfield. Although that was a problem the problem. That's what i'm saying. Dan knows the thirty. Three ten is good but rothlisberger. Two seasons ago had over five thousand yards passing this year. He was on four mean. This is rare for me. Okay because that that sport eludes me a little bit wherein i'm watching and i'm like is what i'm seeing real. I have a hard time with all of the schemes and all of the coaching. And everything else. Oh we're t- mighty mighty ten t minus There were blasting off five or two on right so far so good. Those flames billy lauder flames. Left off at liftoff is a penis. Okay how are we. Capturing this video this a blimp drone and theirs looks flames so far. So good this is looking good. I think we're going to be able to publishes local hour. Everybody okay. this is this needs to land. Everyone needs to can't get get back. It's gonna be a half hour from now. According to wittingham they still need to jump out of the space plane with parachutes back cannot be. The plan is absolutely not adverse. There's gotta be a splash landings splash speaking of which rarely do my eyes. Tell me what you guys are telling me is the truth. Which is those. Statistics are ally that season. That team started the season undefeated. Nobody believed that the undefeated was for real. She saying they got injured on defensive. Did their defense look great. But when you watch their offense play. It wasn't the space age stuff everyone else is doing. Let's make it quick pass. Let's turn the quick passes into the modern day. Hand off because we can do it. It's all pittsburgh could do. And it's all pittsburgh could do. I thought just because their quarterback has aged that way and his arm is that noodled. It was not the guy that i was used to throw the ball all over the field now. He says he's come back in tom. Brady shape done all. The tom brady diet things. We've made fun of him for years for being of skyscraper with legs and he never took care of himself and it had to come back to haunt him right. we had. The conversation was a trevor pryce. Who said somebody said hitting ben rothlisberger hitting glass. You just sink into tom brady. It's like hitting water because ben rothlisberger tissues aren't There used to be. I'm sure there are people right now. That don't remember what ben rothlisberger used to be which would be impossible to to sack. He be impossible to bring. One guy was not sacking. Him he was he was. It was the most frustrating experience for the browns. That's why their game plan. Last year was for him to get rid of the ball in less than two seconds..
