So I wouldn't be opposed to that. She's forty seven Ben Mendelsohn. Now featured in captain marvel is Talos he told marvel entertainment why he loves playing the villain when you're the bad guy. You can always do it for the money. You know, what I mean like bad guys get paid? He'll also be starring in the upcoming series the outside. Based on the Stephen King novel. "Or that was our idea when we first had the idea to cast him in the movie, we knew he would be playing two parts. And so we wanted him to play the human that. He's in inhabiting agent Keller with an American accent. Yes agent and then just to just to differentiate from from that accent. We wanted him to really lean into his natural trillion accent, which is which sounds amazing with the of makeup on him. It's great voice. Everybody is just more. Facile all actors are a little bit more facile with their natural accents can show more emotion. So yeah, I think it was important for him to be able to kind of be as wild as Ben Mendelsohn wants to. I love it. Mccurry's boss looks just like Ben Mendelsohn. That's a fuck. Ultimately as well years. The idea of fear is being the nine that decree. No, Carol as was that reference in a weird way to Star Trek the motion picture were foliage becomes feature or venture venture. Not. Denies knowledge. It wasn't an action idea though, that was that was Geneva. She was writing partner on this. And and I think she came up with it. She came up with your idea. She didn't tell us how or where you got the could be right. She stolen from. While you're trying to say, no, I'm saying homage d-. Same way attornal sunshine. You know? It's all fine. It's all part of one big melting pot is totally fine. Nobody refers to Caroline the movie as captain marvel. That's clearly very deliberate choice as very strange thing for some of the coal someone. Can you can you can you talk about that? You know? I I don't again, I don't think we set out to not call her captain marvel in the movie, we just she had to come up with the name at some point by the end of the film. We thought Nick fury at the sink. Doing the marvelous song? Tease is what's to come? And why her name is? And of course, there's there's mar Vel. Yes, he's taking the mantle from from her hero Val. But of course, Nick fury changes the pronunciation. At the end that that she was captain Carol Dan vers when he when he has her file at the very end. So it's it's there. If you wanna if you wanna mispronouncing marvel is totally fine at the end as well. The you have the revelation that the offenders initiative was named after Carol's flight sign where the idea come. Because we haven't been allowed to talk about it for so long the box of ocean. You see spoiler therapies, right? That come from the idea at the at the end that Carol is inefficiently responsible for the name of the adventures. I mean, the home movie is about captain marvel inspiring fury to to change his whole outlook into, you know, make shield now a place that can deal with an entirely unexpected world that he didn't know existed before. So in a way, the home movie is about how captain marvel inspires him to form the avengers. So so we just wanted to make it very specific at the end. But it was very late decision to not actually see it on the screen. We did shoot him actually writing the evanger initiative on the screen, and it just felt like we didn't need to. It let it hang there in the fans will know what it is. And anyone watching the movie he doesn't know what he's typing. We'll lean over a nasty, but he else in though. Yes. And of course, it's a conscious decision on party guys to finish the movie on that shot of Nick, you don't end with Carol herself key talk about that where and again, whether it rations where you did finish with Carol where we get to see where she goes with the girls..

"Up. Showtime AOL's? Today, we're discussing captain marvel starring rehearsing Samuel L Jackson. Ben Mendelsohn human Hans owl, Lee pace, Leshan Lynch ran a net banning Clark, Gregg and Jude law directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. This is ARIN Rog coast of now playing and Stewart and this was the host to more threatening than human not quite as threatening as a cat Jakup. All right. I've asked before you guys have give qualified hazy answers. It's time to know who is captain marvel is it that the question of the movie. I mean, that's exactly this movie. Yes, even they don't wanna tell us where she comes from. And what it's all about. But I assume with marvel in her name, and I understand at some point. It was a guy that this might have been a flagship character starting with the first imprint of marvel comics. Yes. No, no, no. No. This is going all the way back to Fawcett comics when Billy Batson found a wizard who gave him powers wrong, captain marvel. Oh, but it goes back to that. That is where the roots of this name is because she's an which will be talking about went by captain marvel Fawcett comics who owned that character was sued by DC say that's a superman rip-off DC one didn't do anything with the character. Let the trademark on the name laps and marvel swooped in sixty seven and said we're going to take that name and have mar Bel alien spy on earth mileage of captain marvel comes from a graphic novel. I didn't even know marvel, but I mentioned when we did some of the X men reviews marvel was doing these graphic novels which were more expensive. They looked painted. They weren't just your standard comic book style. And they had more serious stories. The God love man kills X men story. We talked about an X men. Two was one of those the first graphic. Level was the death of captain marvel where he dies of cancer. And I'm reading this. And I'm like, well, I don't know who this captain marvelous. So I'm not really sad. What period of time was this late seventies? Okay. Yeah. In the comic. She had mar Bel who was a dude. But he befriends Carol danvers who is an earth pilot. And yeah, eventually mantles are going to be passed on power is going to be passed on. It's all very complicated, convoluted contradictory, depending on the continuity, you're reading, but Carol danvers becomes MS marvel, and then just recently like in the last decade, they've made her captain marvel really she was an X men character..

"No. It was better than in rogue one where they put him in there. So that way he could report to a robot computer, man, I'm like why Ben Mendelsohn the bad guy. But you know, I think like in terms of captain marvel is we want her to be a hero, and in this she because she she calls herself, a noble hero warrior, or no Bush's closing warrior-hero warrior, and yes, I get the warrior part, but I didn't feel like the heroes. I felt like she's dealing with her own shit so much that I didn't feel the passion of a hero that wants to save everyone around her you feel with wonder woman like maybe. Wondering about to like cross no-man's-land, and they say like, no one can do this. You can't say like. And she says I will say though, and she liked crosses that no-man's-land. I get like tears every time. I see that moment. But I just I didn't I and that's not to say that every hero Hoste hub that like passionate turn. But and I think in the marvel movies, that's what it's sort of built on is these heroes believing in something bigger than themselves. I think I think it's weird too. Because again, the way they structured this movie where she has this past that, she doesn't remember, right? She has she has wonder woman's hero moment. I would like she has it. But the in the narrative structure of the movie it happens before any of the stuff that you're watching actually took place. Oh, as like they are trying to try and give her that hero moment. But it's already happened. So she's already done it. So then that means that while you're watching her she's already she's already become the hero. So then what am I watching? You know, like, it'd be cool and eat ways your said than done ways your said than done, but there's a lot of flashbacks in this movie. And if instead of it being flashbacks that she was like dreaming about or machines or whatever are causing to spawn in her if both of the scenes were happening heroin. So you were getting her story and her story before at the same time, but they matched and it was almost like an inevitable cycle. Like, no matter what you do to this woman. No matter how you hold her down. She will find roic sure is McHugh arise and be. Era. Even if you take her memories, the U transporter to another planet like you do all these things like you send her across the galaxy. You do all these things she will rise, and she will be heroin that to me I give myself youth bums. Thumbs that to me. I think is maybe what the goal was. But because the movie doesn't is it isn't evenly paced between those two things that. Yeah. That's like editing story structure. Yeah. I mean to your dance point. She has that moment at the very end of the film, and at the very end of the film. She's like I'm going to go do this thing. And I was like fuck. Yeah. Now, she's a hero here. Yeah. But but it took two hours to get there. I because I was that's what I was waiting for waiting for the wonder woman turn where like because I got super fucking children's. Yeah. I'm gonna go save. I also I also don't think it looked like it required that much effort from her. I think is another April, right? They have to set her up to be the super okay fan because it's going to play into avengers. But there's they stay they'd had a device a physical and metaphorical device in this movie to make it. So that way she couldn't just go ham. Right. But it still didn't require much effort like no easy for her really sour. Very ill defined which is which you know. It's weird because you get the movies like Thor floor for the most part. It seems easy. But then they still find a way to knock him down. God's wanting other God. And then he and then he finds a new level of Strang though. And then it becomes easy again. Because that's the way you wanna watch Thor is having a great time kicking ass. Right. And it's weird..

"Okay. It's a good point. I'd like to take a little bit of time to talk about Ben Mendelsohn who I just spoke about. Yes, Ben Mendelsohn is a forty nine year old Australian actor, and he is one of my favorite living people. I I was looking a bit hit back at his career. I think he he really became a known commodity to me when animal kingdom came out, which is a dismal showed Australian gangster movie sort of godfather esque story about a family in the with crime organization underneath it. But I didn't realize that he'd been working so long, and so so prosperously before that, and he had appearing turns Malik movies and Bessler in movies, and he really had done a lot of different kinds of work. But it's only in the last few years. He's taken on this new post of him through the kind of eight twenty four class of cool character actor guy, and now he's just I'm the best thing and kind of a noisy action movie guy now. So he's in rogue one he played a character with just a phenomenal name named director. Orson critic. Oh, yeah. He's cape. Yes. Flowing cape. And he'll so majestic. And he was he was King George the the sixth in darkest hour. I thought a good King, George, you would know better than me if that was credible. It was weird that character is opposed to stutter allowed because that's famously the character that convert one for the asteroid. That's right. I frankly, he was a little too in control. But but that makes for a good movie watching. So I wasn't mad. So it's a good opportunity to talk about Ben Mendelsohn manner speaking, which I think you could say is sort of a lisp, but also a sort of like a charmed lisp. There's something alluring in an odd way about the way that he speaks and I wonder if that's always been true for him. But he he doesn't he didn't have the stutter as effectively, but there is something unusual about the way that he talks. Yes, draws you into him that works very well. I think as as Talos in captain marvel, but it was good in them in ready player one to where he plays a character known Sorrento who's the villain. He's just the bad guy. Who's like? What I wanna do is run the company, and I gotta be in charge of all the video game characters in the world, and is very like basic wanna one evil bond villain kind of thing. Brought a little bit of his flair to it. Tell us is different Talos. We think is the arch villain of the story. And then about an hour in your we realized that he is quite adorable, and in fact in ally, and he is wearing that stupid face paint that I'm describing and he's wearing those prosthetic years. But I I would watch a movie he's the emotional center of the movie for sure even though I think pre Larssen's relationship with Maria is supposed to be well her relationships with various people and her burgeoning relationship with Talos becomes one of the motivations for her to do what she does. I think he he has his actually quite interesting arc in a way that in some ways Kevin moral does not which is the he starts out as this villainous figure, and then he becomes more sympathetic. And then he becomes a comic relief. And then he becomes this emotional centrifugal force when he is reunited with his family. That's a pretty big arc for a character towels wearing face paint..

"In chief Peter Surata. And until spike gassed, I'm gonna take you to the set of marvel studios latest film, captain marvel or in a play some of the interviews that I along with other journalists conducted onset, those interviews include Samuel Jackson who reprises role as Nick fury. Ben Mendelsohn who plays a scroll in the new film, executive producer Jonathan Schwartz and booklets start things off with us. Samuel Jackson who I'm not sure if you guys know this, but he I interviewed Sam a bunch of different times. And he kinda get get some joy from his no fucks giving attitude as you'll see here. He really likes to challenge. Reporters with dismissive responses. I think he gets kind of a kick out of it. And it's kind of fun my favorite part of this interview is one of the journalists onset. I think it was Perry from collider asks Sam if you could talk a little bit about what it feel what it means to him to play a big supporting role in the first female lead marvel superhero film in Sam you'll see gives this kind of dismissive response. And you'll see this is kind of the game that Sam plays because Perry kind of you know, goes to bat and challenges him. And I think we actually get the best enter out of that confrontation. I I love talking to Sam Jackson, and I think you'll enjoy this interview. Let's see none of these mother fuckers. I. Sorry to see her disintegration skits with issue. The back in action. You have. Guessing Dotson stuff on your face. Get any injuries tank. Turn to join the conduct tribe and this initiation rite. Pretty cool. I am I'm been spanked. "Title of the show at outlawed this auto batter most famous black mirror under at picky blinders starts, Taryn Edgerton is Robin of looks leave fresh back from the crusades to discover about the sheriff of Nottingham played by an incredibly one note evil. Ben Mendelsohn is in league with the Catholic church and threatening to I mean who honestly cares. So the problem with this is trying very very hard to be super contemporary and super cool and super relevant. So it's it goes for that kind of very arch and chronicity historical. Look that brunt Helgoland did in a night style except without any of the wit or flare or Huma on. It just comes across in highly tedious and pointless. I really felt terrible. I was inclined to give it a chance because benzoate and said it was good. And then I saw it with you, Chris. And let's say it lived up to its initial hype. It was not good. I just I like they're on the anyone who's even familiar with the the the story will be I think the more familiar and more affecting you have robinhood than less. You will enjoy this film because it strays so far from the kind of accepted canon of the story. Yeah. I don't think it's a great robinhood film is a weird take on on the mythology. But I went and like you having seen the trailer in thinking this look good at all. This looks just Brady about and about half an hour. Enormous thinking Queen doing this. I found it really. Taryn Edgerton is is kind of charming and phone in the lead role. I actually really liked Ben Mendelsohn villain. I was expecting run of the mill villain stuff. I think. Got some really great lines in this like. The Kevin Costner I have maybe grazed blowing in the year. Christmas. Now, I found this actually wastes absolutely no time, and it's got an energy to it. The I honestly have no time to stop and think if this take on urban hood was really terrible not. It was just filled in front of your eyes. The terribleness was happening in front of your eyes. The terrible. I I just having a hill health an entirely different film was honestly, I went expecting the absolute were given. And I thought it was all right to be honest. I can honestly I can count at least five films. I have enjoyed much much less than that in your life. This year this year. I think it's perfectly fine has some nice visual moments in I like some of the performances in it not rushing back for the sequel at very kind of its government. But I I think this is one of those things that ever unshaking on now. Yes, maybe. There will be extra maybe flowers will grow from nominee. Honestly on this is not even on the level of let into the fucking sold. It's it's it's an abomination the movie itself is awful, it's misconceived on his every single level every single level heart from that. Yeah. It is guy Ritchie presents bats asan's creed. Jorgo enjoyable as this. So yes. So we gave this film to stalls which actually generous. I'm I'm might give it a loan alone star rating, don't watch it. Even if you look depends on it. Yeah. "Ready player one player one yeah lay it on us him loosely based on the book of the same name one the rest all of us into the always is it's a virtual reality game the most the world is playing because in the year twenty forty five the world is pretty much this so most people spend time on the away the credit or the always is dies and leaves three challenges to if you can pass all the challenges you get the literal easter egg and you win trillions of dollars of his moneys and control the alexis literally he's to the kingdom like the everything a little piece in so wade wade poor kid living in the snack living stacks in columbus ohio and so he he figured out the first clue so that puts him and his friends in the leader board and you have this evil company iowa and they're evil sort of co do led by and middleton what's his what's his name in the movie nncholas sorrento but ben mendelsohn in love that guy sorrento is like you know businessman on steroids he's after way his friends and trying to stop them from solving the puzzles before he does so it's you know kid versus evil empire for control of another empire these movie it really is and similar to other eighties movies this trailer jessen damian from current heard podcast have a rule they only do one trailer you know or if they can avoid the trailer they will completely the trailers for this movie for ready player one where very much like eighties trailers in which it laid out everything like everything that happened in the movie almost major was in the trailer and even after seeing like the one main trailer dole time in the movie i'm like oh well if it was not this key that i saw on the trailer it must be this one so that was kind of weird did you get a sense of that.

"Hokey s love story love connection added to it so it's part of it and it's part of the book so whatever but other than that i didn't really have any major complaints with anything else because i took everything at face value jeff you talked about ben mendelsohn character nolan sorrento i didn't mind that he was two dimensional because like i said he was like a caricature of an eighties villain you didn't have an eaton have to have motivation you just bad guy and you knew it the action was great the thing i want to talk about now is my favorite scene of the movie and probably a lot of people's favorite scenes of the movie was the shining seen jeffey you wanna dive into that because i think those type of scenes which you know this this isn't a novel concept of a movie one because it's based off a book in two because it has so many references and plays off other things but having a movie set within a movie that is so realistic to the original movie was something i'm having a hard time remembering and i did really really enjoy that because it was so well done yeah and i wanna say wrapping up on actors mark rylance i thought was pretty grades james halliday inventive your waste i liked like he had captured that nerd essence that they wanted but the shining scene is the second challenge or they try to go find one of the keys that are hidden and that can help them get to the easter egg and our audience reacted more to that than anything else will be people were laughing like oh this is great and it looked so quote me and it was an exact replica of the shiny i don't know if it was a set or if they did see gee i imagine.

"Yeah speaking speaking of the world like the ending i thought was pretty disastrous i mean the idea that he's okay first of all he gets on the awasthi intercom which i don't recall ever being introduced is like now he can talk to everyone okay i guess i mean fine he gives us vague speech about rebelling against iowa and everyone just gets it's terrible like this no it's not a it's not a particularly bearing speech would be like there's not enough setup of why people would actually want to join him on this fight right right right idea to that they could fool ben mendelsohn into thinking it side of the you literally have something on your face now i've been in some very immersive experiences but i've been aware something was still on my face there foiled by having a like leaving american his charity which is what a great video game that yeah ren reflection i do have to say dave last week or earlier today is we're recording this he's been a lot of time talking about how dumb pacific rim uprising wasn't i have to say like this movie definitely hit me more in the dumbest shit oh wow happening because like it this movie dave like our our big boss will have his password written down right his vr chair and okay fine i actually can accept people will do that because i have seen ceo's and presidents and people like i've seen people do that who shouldn't be doing that because you're in charge of high level that was funny accent even after he realized it was oh they took my pastor he cripples at the paper does not change his password so drill can just walk in literally just walk into his unsecured office sitting history or which i guess nobody metrics just needs a password that didn't chain and control everything there and meanwhile when she escapes because somehow yeah they're not monitoring this girl who is labeled with a number of suit from their own organization but he can't find her dave this is what i'm talking about is demonstrate you're talking uprising nothing in this situation make sense.

"Of the movie this movie is delightful i mean it's it is profound and deep it has some challenging elements i mean the idea of blurring reality it is full of pop culture references one part of the movie that is absolutely brilliant they take you in this artificial reality into the world of the shining there's all kinds of nineteen eighties nostalgia there's an iron giant character there's a mecca godzilla there are tons and tons of references so many that you probably will want to come back and see it a second time to get them all and the characters are deeply endearing it's mostly an unknown cast except for mark rylance who plays the the strange haunted creator of all of this who exists only in avatar form in the oasis alternate reality there's also a evil corporate head played by ben mendelsohn who's trying to defeat the efforts of parsa fall that's of course the name of a pursuer of the holy grail in wagner marion opera and knights of the round table percival parcel in any event it it's full of literary allusions at bounce back and forth and characters which actually like and care about he falls in love with a an avatar that he meets who is absolutely charming and so by the way is the character that cheese based on that avatar who is played by olympia cook all winning performances if there's one problem with the movie is it makes your head hurt because there's so much going on and it's so busy and so breathless but it does make you think of other spielberg films that have also oh been wonderful this is the first spielberg film other than the color purple where the score is not written by john williams john williams began the score he's partially credited but mostly it's alan sylvestry but the music sounds wonderful to gorgeous photographed significantly dazzling special effects if there's only one problem with the film it's that it does become challenging to follow if you're not used to the world of video games three and a half stars for the pg thirteen rated ready player one the pg thirteen for some violence that is at times somewhat scary meanwhile you're on the michael medved show hey hello robert urine hello michael parkland murderer.

"I think rylance his performance is actually dig in hikes i think it's like here's a guy who literally only understands pop culture is the least well rounded human being in the world and and his big realization as he was dying was that right and that's the plays that with the appropriate vacancy right the appropriate inability to interact and connect and with the lingering sadness and loneliness but also speaking to the rest of the movie was as martyrs his performance figure that willy wonka thing that you're talking about like that's what really is about to like he's like it's a world of imagination i live here i have no friends i only have parr's isn't it great and charlie's the one who's like this is scary yeah this is very weird and the other kids i wanna be rich and so the other kids in this movie in ready player one are or the evil right sorrento surtee no nolan sorrento ben mendelsohn grapevine mound olsen fun in this movie i think he's fun i think he's this because he's playing him like a coward it is always surprising when i see non sweaty ben mendelsohn performance because he really started landing hard here as sweaty guys and he's good at like as a guy who's like vein is pulsing right here yeah he's really good at that right in the cigarette is like his mouth assoc the cigarette won't stay between his lips like he's got sweaty teeth we were talking about his list it's like a very very very slight sort of speech thing but i like owns it oh total even when he's playing really together high status people like this that said this guy is kinda like just a a weak will now week will homa hates spineless and fan boy can always spy.

"Who might not like it being so different from the book but what are your complaints i mean just doesn't again on a movie by itself i think some of the actor they really didn't do well like ben mendelsohn like superduper arch like he's overdoing it more than he didn't rogue one so you're like jesus christ he's doing that and then everything dan you have ties shared in here and like he's supposed to be the like i'm riley in behind and he's supposed to be the one like like everybody believes in this guy but like you even see in the trailer when he gives this speech and he's gonna listen this that wasn't cut let's do that again well he can't be interesting i understand that but like it's sound when i can hear somebody like they're reading the words that's not a good look you can read it to the point where you just a gamer doesn't have any confidence a socially awkward guy he's renewed light reading this directly he saw script free minutes ago well you know what i have some disagreements with you there then with with some of the actors here before i get into that they'll just show you i'm being fair man i'm not all about nostalgia here talking about the cg that i'm still very fund of defending right here when i know complain about it in other films i can't complain about it a little bit here.
