NASA's 'Hedgehog' Robots Hop, Tumble in Microgravity

"Comets asteroids and hedgehogs these spiky little robots are perfect. Fit for low gravity exploration. This is innovation now exploring comets. Asteroids and small moons can be a difficult task. So what kind of design could be used for exploration a joint team. From nasr's jet propulsion laboratory stanford university and mit believe that hedgehogs are the answer. Let's hear more from. Ben hoffman a graduate student at stanford university working on the project. We've done a lot of modeling with various different types of analytical numerical models. And we've learned a lot the hop angle is more a function of the shape of the rover. So with this type of impulsive. Breaking cubic shape provides a nice forty five degree hop on average. The team is experimenting with fly. Wheels and friction belts to create the momentum that allow the hedgehogs to hop or spin across the surface. We took this prototype down to houston and flew on the vomit comet for two hundred. And if you guys aren't familiar with that it provides about twenty second windows a relative weightlessness. So in each of these twenty seconds we were able to test maneuver so far. The prototypes funded through. Nasr's innovative advanced concepts program are just what the engineers order

"So that'll be a crazy week luckily luckily, Ben Hoffman. Runs the whole in fact, I forgot to put up a very funny picture from yesterday I'll put it up today Jori out in a tent. Taking claims the claim boxes sitting outside the racing office, we've had to reinvent a lot of our processes. It's there's some things that don't even think about like you know things that are kind of cake that our industries still does but the licking of the claim envelope was one that we were like this doesn't feel Cova De. So this doesn't feel like it works this time of year to have an envelope licked by. For a claim. So we've brought to tape out and we're the ones the things with the little piece of string. All learned a lot. We've come across things and realize man this. This isn't GonNa work like this and had to reinvent the wheel a little bit but. It's been a great learning experience and we're very pleased with where we're at and the ability to to host horses for our horsemen our horse players unbelievable. I got about about two minutes. You got some opinions what what are you doing, derby? Wise. What's your thoughts? You know I was an art collector guy as your black cat text came through just at the right time John has a little opinion that I might have had something to do. My bad luck might have to do with that obviously Brian and Tommy. Our good friend good friends of mine was really hoping for them but you know law looks like a horse to beat. But to your point I, think the opportunities are defined like an enforceable or major fed somebody that can sneak into a to a try or super, and hopefully bust up party a little bit. I'm a little. Skeptical, on some of the the eight to ten to one eight to twelve to one horses. So GonNa try to maybe kick those out and and see what we can do underneath his law, and then take some pick threes into the Derby without his largest. In case something crazy happens. Now thinking to your connection down in New Orleans to I did occur to me and I when I was going through how many Louisiana Derby Exeter's, and that's going to be closely watched task brought it up yesterday you know obviously the horses from the travelers win a mile and a quarter, but the horses from the Louisiana Derby early in the season, the mile and three sixteenths so. That experiment. I mean it's not the same proximity obviously the May but it that seems like that was a really clever tweak of of the three year old calendar new. Orleans E-eh the folks at fairgrounds were just trying to find a way to differentiate their race a little bit everybody has the traditional mile and an eighth prep in you're competing for horse flashing it's getting a little tougher. So they felt like they could do something like that to just differentiate their. Product have their race stand out a little bit and and to your point It certainly was fruitful this year you never know what next year is going to bring kind of how the the races unfold but a horse like enforceable who ran in the Louisiana. Derby got a little freshening was wide at keeneland into kind of what you could say a race that didn't really come back. So a horse like him that I know you like certainly makes a Lotta, sense? Finally Update on the Churchill downs Racing Club, which has been you know it was the the really the leader, the the innovator, the instant success involved with Warriors, club which took people on an insane run all the way to a breeding shed. What's the status right now of some of the runners that other one that Amos has got Yep Amos source recently retired. With a foot injury and and we felt like the right thing to do was to retire him. He didn't need to drop into the claiming ranks or or like that. So he's going be an ot with actually a club member who wanted.

"It's just that simple men. As this Chicago Bear Fan? You know we were in the playoffs and the double. If. That if that kick goes in. I don't know how deep we get in the playoffs trubisky's confidence if you saw what he did in that game heated rate game. We are now as a franchise where I'm seeing every, you know national media at the bottom of the thirty two. It all started with that one kick in the crazy thing about sports is how you know each little moment though of the teeny bit of a bounce, a ball can set an Asian back a decade. It's wild. It's wild how? That works out. What are they going to ask you about saving seen the first episode? You have some cameos in their moving forward. You have some of your classmates from the girl that are appearing on the show. Are there any basketball players can make cameos as characters on the show I don't think song trying to remember. Yeah I don't think so. If there is a season if there is a season two, would you want basketball players? It's tricky because. You know it is about basketball, but it's about small town. So Ben Hoffman his from Kentucky and it is about Small Town Kentucky and coach Mike Character in it. Is a loser. So we would have to figure out how a real guy would ever deal with it. You're the closest we have is his dad. Barry Hopkins played in the Aba played by Robert. So potentially if it was a guy, his dad's age, you know maybe if there's a flashback potential get somebody that way but it's interesting. I'm just thinking more like have a player voice wanted but like Kevin Garnett would be phenomenal. The most foul mouth player I've ever covered would be phenomenal. It'd be natural for him to speak the way does really. I mean, I definitely wouldn't be against I'll tell you that. No that's a good one and. Inside this, NBA want me to ask anybody to be on the show inside the bubble here as they as they look to get some of their their women friends inside the. Email you're telling me aren't we were talking off the air about the NBA sent a memo around outlining who is allowed in was loud outright. So basically saying to sum it up family members can come in kids can come in but people that you meet on social media are not allowed to come in. Basically, you're not allowed to bring in one night stands. So to speak into which one one GM said to me, you're GONNA a lot of you know Thelma's look like a nineteen year old or twenty, five year old whatever it is girls. These. NBA Players NBA players are playing chess when the league's playing checkers on this subject. Such a funny concept and he's not question if everyone's being tested who cares bring it. I. Agree. I. Think who cares because if you don't let them bring whoever they want. It makes it more likely. They try to burst the bubble and go out. Something the difference between somebody's uncle come to visit. Getting tested and somebody they met besides most likely a really fun two hours or the player. There's no difference if both people the uncle and the random person on instagram both want to be there why is delete playing godfather I don't know this could be one of those situations where they pivot on the fly like if players are like otherwise, they're just gonNa have guys lying and..

"Safely while also you know respecting executive orders. we've worked very very hard to You know take precautions. The procedures that are put in place Set by the public health experts to to to bring their back and I can't think the leadership of governor this year for all the hard work of him and his team and the guidance the state Showed US and they're going to allow us to reopen the barn areas on Monday. Made the eleventh. And we've talked about this but it'll be phased in approach For the for the return of the of the horses You know if we if we said we'd open up on May the eleventh. I think if everybody came at once with these new protocols You'd have a line of a horse vans and trailers down southern parkway extending onto the waterson Freeway so We're going to have a phased in approach from you know the first three days they're going to be fair grabs horses. Then we'll take the horses from Florida over the next three days and then finally the The horses based in in Hot Springs Arkansas. And then we have all the other locales starting on May twentieth. Now keep in mind that this is all fluid. That's a schedule of events as you know. Steve Hargrave our stall manager. And and Ben Hoffman our our vice president or racing they're working very hard and closely with scheduling These returns with the horsemen. If we see that the you know the the the initial testings protocols place are going real smoothly They'll work some of those guys in earlier on some of those earlier dates as well so it. It's it's like a lot of things it's a fluid situation The number one question we have is when you're going to reopen and we're evaluating that right now in fact. I just got off a call. There's a number of factors in play. You know I I do believe we're gonNA open sooner rather than later But we've got to evaluate the incoming horse population. Benson's GONNA write a condition book real quick and you gotTa have horsemen You know targeting some of the horses to those races. But I I could see us. You know reopening sooner rather than later and we'll announce those and come to a final conclusion in the coming days. Sir Darren when it comes to that next step do you have to at this point Go back to Frankfort for Consent or KHRC. What I'll ask the same question that Pat McKenna was asked. What are the mechanics of the next step? No we're green with for horse racing on May the eleventh You know for us we. We're ready to roll. The only the only protocols that's protocols the only thing that I think we have to you know decide. We're committed to racing four days a week Thursday through Sunday. Does it warrant a fifth day? Maybe we could add Wednesdays in Maybe early on shortly after we reopen. Maybe we run a Monday Tuesday and Wednesday right away and take a day off here and there were just trying to understand from a horse population standpoint. How soon we can realistically launch that first day of racing. Then we'll take it a step further. We'll take a look at the other tracks on the counter because it spectator free. We're not bound to.
