"They will protect you check them out for yourself and we think Barracuda for their support of Tech News Weekly. Alright. So this was a big week actually big couple of weeks in the realm, of gaming, news facebook and Sony had some big announcements just this week or last couple of days we have Russell Holly from android central to talk all about him. Welcome back to the show. Russell. Hey thanks. Yeah, it's good to have you back. Good to see you. So let's start first with facebook everybody's favorite topic but this is like the funds side of facebook because it's not facebook social network facebook, the VR company were of course, we're talking about Oculus facebook announced the next generation the next version of these standalone oculus quest headsets, the oculus quest to aptly named Talk I. I. Suppose about the hardware upgrades that we're seeing here wasn't very long the first quest came out I. think it just little over a year, and here we are on the next version of it. What kind of upgrades in are are they meaningful to you? Do you think these? Enough themselves they are a great reason to upgrade what do you think? Sure so if you a look at the pure hardware upgrades, you've got a faster processor notably faster processor. What we've seen in the past is We've had mobile processors that have kind of been You know turned into these VR headsets that we've seen from like the Oculus go, and then the first OCULUS. This is actually using qualcomm Xr two processor, which is the first qualcomm processor that is just straight up built to handle virtual reality and augmented reality applications. So it's not something that's been shoehorned into something else. This is this is purpose built for for these. These VR applications we know that it's got considerably more storage than the previous generation. We also know that it's lighter when you wear it on your head, you know these are all three things that are super important for people who use the VR headsets for extended periods of time especially because the original oculus quest, a little heavy lot of the weight was there on the front and so if you you went to where it's for an extended period of time you definitely felt it, which is a shame because it's a lot of fun to use. In you've got the upgraded. The upgraded visibility specs but I. But I've read about this that the original oculus quest had the two lenses the two different displays separated. So you kind of adjust for your head a little bit better than what you're getting here. Right? It's a single panel and they're basically making the. Adjustment through software alone. Do you think that's going to be good enough I. Mean we've seen this and other headsets. How do you think that'll fair? Yeah. So I mean what this really comes down to you of a single panel you've got to lenses on the two hundred can be kind of manually adjusted to fit where it is that that GonNa need for your eyes but every time oculus makes this kind of step towards uniformity. It means that that you know different head types are just not going to be compatible. You know that they try to address as many people as possible, but it's just not going. To be for everyone, you know you're going to be able to put your head in this thing, and you're going to tweak it a little bit in. It's it's GonNa work for most folks But when you have a single panel and you have these these kind of manual software adjustments that are being done, it's just not gonNa work for everyone and it's probably GonNa impact folks who have glasses little more than than everyone else when when it comes to using this because you're you're more than likely going to need some kind of insert instead of using your regular glasses like you were able to with previous generations. Okay. Well, that's a little bit of Bummer but I understand. I'm the I'm the one wearing glasses after all. So I get on the obstacle. Now I've read Sam's GonNa Choose piece his review at ars Technica. I've also read bed Ben Gutierrez Review at Polygon. I've read both of them at this point, and maybe you haven't but does I couldn't they couldn't be further from each other like what? Is Full on like holy holy cow do not buy this thing. Ben. Is this is the most amazing thing it'd be are maybe not quite to that level, but very positive on it. Where do you land at least on paper right now from what you've seen? Are you optimistic? Are you hesitant in any way are your thoughts? So the greatest thing that Oculus has going for it right now as ecosystem the Games and APPS that come with it are fantastic and you know there are just no other. Place to go when you want to experience the are things in innocuous made that very clear during the announcement where they were revealing the headset we've got you know Star Wars Games come into this thing they're the rebooting missed, which is one of my favorite games of all time to be able to play in Vr? You know this this you couldn't have built a game platform that was more targeted to me as a giant nerd who wants to put a computer on his face and dance around. but from a hardware perspective you know the you're gonNA need to spend the extra fifty bucks in order to have the headset be comfortable because there's an accessory that goes in the back and hold it a lot better than the straps that come with that out of the box. And the controllers are actually there they this is really kind of frustrating you get a little bit more of this and Sam's review than do in Ben's they're the controllers use less battery which is great but the reason that they useless batteries terrible is because there are fewer sensors projecting infrared light, and that means that the the controllers are actually slightly less accurate when you to use them and when you play games like beat sabre or some of the archery games like hollow point and things like that you really kinda develop that muscle memory and you can feel when the controllers are slightly out of sync So I'm concerned that a lot of people upgrading from the. Quest to the quest to are going to notice that that discrepancy and it's going to impact the way that they play games and they may stop them from playing games like beat sabre altogether because their collective scores are going to. and so that that that is something that I'm I'm super concerned about as as far as kind of mass adoption as we go to hand these these headsets out to people as possible you know the the accuracy is something that makes VR work in the accuracy of your of your hands and the accuracy of how they're tracked. Is, something. That's super important, and then for Oculus to make this decision I'm sure that they did a ton of research in decided that it just wasn't a big enough difference to to justify having the other sensors in there, but it's it's pretty clear when you deal with. Hyper. Accurate Games like beat sabre, which is one of the most popular games for the platform you know having that accuracy.
