"It's like you want to remember your family does something really exciting. You're like, I didn't do this specifically myself, but I feel it in a more proximate and real way than I would if it were a stranger. That's really cool, Ben. I'm easy for you. All right, yeah. All right. Who's your guy? Well, today, today we are going to meet Brandon Hughes. Branded Hughes. Brandon Hughes, of the Chicago Cubs, so Hughes was from Royal Oak, Michigan, was drafted in the 16th round of the 2017 draft out of Michigan state, and in his first season at short season ball, he was an outfielder. He was drafted as a position player, and he notched a 91 WRC plus the dip to a 76 WRC plus and a ball in 2018 on the back of a two 37 three O three three O 7 line. And that's not the best. And here I'm going to be quoting from Tim stebbins piece for NBC sports Chicago. And the final few days of spring training in 2019, the cubs gave Brandon here's a choice. It was either get released or become a pitcher for them, he said. Then cubs director of player development, Jaron Madison, said there wasn't going to be any at bats really for me anywhere in the system he was added so I could either get my release papers or become a pitcher. And Hughes had actually pitched previously, but a shoulder injury had moved him off the mound and to being a position player full time. So this was like a reconversion, really. And right around the time he was converting to pitcher and here I'm quoting from stubbins again. Cubs reliever, Scott was switching to throwing sidearm. I just got to see how he went about his business because it was a big switch for him as well. Huge switch dropping down, he said, I got to see that in action and it gave me confidence like, hey, he's going through a switch. So what's different about me? I'm ready for this switch. And so that was sort of underway at the start of 2019. And here's what Eric long and Hagen said about Hughes in August 2019 when he was a 35 future value. Used through all of 6 innings as a freshman at Michigan state and had been a full-time outfielder before his conversion. He's thrown 30 good innings across the Asia, northwest league, and for the last few weeks of the season, South Bend. He turns 24 in December, but he was already has a fair, three pitch mix, 90 to 94, a delivery that's tough on lefties, an average change up and a fringe breaking ball, and he's throwing a lot of strikes. He's 2020 rule at 5 eligible and Hughes now has a three pitch mix that fastball and change up and has added a slider after the cubs had him switch from a curveball to you guessed it a sweeping slider. I don't know if he classifies it as a sweeper, but it is a sweeping slider and he credits that as a big part of his success. He has said recently my mechanics of smoothed out and they're more repeatable now and there's a little more velo in there. In 2021, he had a one 7 one ERA in 26 appearances between South Bend and double-A Tennessee with a 12.9 K per 9 before he was called up. He hadn't allowed a run in ten appearances between Tennessee and Iowa the season striking out 22 with three walks in 16 and two third innings. He was called up on May 17th, he threw an inning in two thirds registering walk and 5 strikeouts, including one to Brian Reynolds and one to Daniel vogelbach, and here I am quoting again from stubbins. Once I had that first full season of pitching under my belt, it was kind of like, I'm a pitcher, and I'm no longer on offense, you said, that said, he could still play the outfield if cubs manager David Ross needs, I already told him Hugh said laughing. I told him I could play a little outfield if you need. And then Russ apparently chuckled and said, I told him, I could have used him a couple of times this year a little insurance. I'm happy to use here, happy for him, his family, his hard work. I think he's got a chance to really help us win some ball games. So nice. Yeah. Brandon here. Welcome to the big leagues, Brandon Hughes, a fun fact from at stats based stats that said Brendan Hughes are the cubs as the first pitcher in the modern era to get 5 plus outs in his MLB debut with all of them coming via strikeout. Yes. So that's something. Yeah. It was a good outing for him. Sometimes we're like, meet a major leaguer, he had a rough night. And you know, it's about meeting some guys we don't know and being excited for them because just getting to the show is like the big thing, but his one and two thirds inning of work proceeded with as such Reynolds struck out swinging, then Ben gamel struck out swinging, then Daniel vogelbach struck out swinging, then Yoshi tsutsugo struck out looking, then Michael chavis walked because he did issue that one walk, and then rodolfo Castro strike out swinging, and then his night was done, and I bet he felt like a million bucks. Well, I wanted to give you kind of a combination meter major leaguer slash stat last year because we were lamenting just the profusion of Taylor's and Tyler's the other day. So many. A new Tyler dropped this season. He was one of those guys whose debuts didn't.

"Also tall. He's not quite so quite so wide. And I guess now that I think about it vocal block isn't tall. So Zach Thompson not very much like Dan vogelbach. But he might be their best pitcher right now. And I worry a little bit that he just happened upon the Marlins machine that makes people good for three months. Like, they did it with sandal contra, although it seems like he's just good, a bit of a popular Lopez. And I do worry a little bit if that won't pan out because we didn't think he was much of a prospect, heading into last year. Yeah. But, man, he looked the part, I thought. He threw 75 major league innings last year and he's really tall. He gets the right plane for his pitches somehow. He's kind of cut her forward. I don't know if it's a cutter or slider. It's one of those in between pitches, and he just throws it a lot. It's basically its primary pitch now. And it just works like batters didn't do very well against it. He didn't overly struggle with command, which I think was always something we worried about with him, that prospect evaluator is worried about with him overall, but it looks like he's just gotten better at that. Like even in the miners in the past few years, his walk numbers have just been trending the right way. It's weird to think that you could trade Jacob stallings and get your team's best picture, but maybe that's an indictment of the pirate the starting pitching. It's good. He's a good player. I think that that trade. He's not the only player they got in that trade. They got two other prospects back too. I think that was a really good trade for them. It was a Kyle Nicholas and Connor Scott. I don't actually know as much about them. But I think that's their biggest off season acquisition. It was a pretty good one in my opinion. All right, well, we started on a positive note. Strengths and weaknesses? So I'm annoyed because I wrote this before they sent O'Neill cruise down. But they're going to call him up after he works on his defense for enough days to miss the super two deadlines. That's good. Although, if that defense is in the outfield, that would be sort of sad too. When he comes up, he's going to play shortstop. Yeah. A 100% sure, basically. 95% sure if they played him a short stop last year. The O'Neill cruise story works a lot better if he's a shortstop and he's a lot more of a special talent if he can play short. But the left side of their infield crews getting there in a few months or whatever. It's just great. Brian is another one of my personal favorite players. He's like, that's what you should do in your head when you're trying to think of who he most resembles. He is, I think, the best young third base defender of the game. It's really fun to watch. He's just perfect reflexes out there, canon arm, really great. I kind of doubted all the defensive reports I heard on him before he came up. Because I was like, I don't know. Like, it's so rare that you have so many good defensive third basemen all at once, and maybe there's just some creep. And no, like, he's just the real deal. Yeah. If it weren't for the fact that Ariana kind of has the prestige stranglehold on an old loves he's actually never lost one. I think Hayes might have topped him last year. I guess he also missed some time. So that may be holding back. But he's really good defensively. And offensively, when he puts the ball in the air, he's great. He's one of these guys who doesn't have like a perfect swing plane and approach tailored to his strengths, but he's got a lot of bat speed. He walks enough. He doesn't strike out too much. If he could put the ball in the air more often, he would be like a MVP candidate type guy every year, I think. And he kind of was, right? Like when he played 20 games in 2020 and was incredible, he had a 200 WRC plus. Okay, probably he won't do that. But he has a chance to be really good and he has a chance to be the foundation of the next great pirates team. And that's third base, O'Neill cruise at shortstop. They could have a really good left side of the Enfield once everybody up. That's a big change from the pirates of a few years ago when they were kind of in the early stages of tanking and had no exciting players. And I didn't even mention Brian Reynolds if he's playing left field, then the whole left side of the diamond is good for them. He's maybe going to get traded, but he's awesome and he's another guy where I was kind of doubting of the, of whether this package would work out for an offensive player being good. And yeah, it is. It works. It's far really hard. It doesn't check out. It all kind of plays together. For a team that is really bad, and the pirates are really bad. They have some really good players. And I think that gives them hope for how good they'll be in the future. Yeah, and they also have a great farm system, which makes sure you do. The strength for 2022, necessarily, but it's a strength in that it gives pirates fans some solace and something to dream on and watch for a while and think about all of those guys getting good and then leaving because nothing will pay them. Right, so I don't know what's going to happen there, but this is for a team that is kind of down and out. But I'd be more interested in being a pirate fan this year than a reds fan because there's a lot of fun players here and you can kind of see the direction they're going. Yeah, I was more optimistic as I looked through the pirates than I thought I would be based on the pirates. So for biggest weakness, I just said yes. I think we could skip that one. They're not trying to win a bunch of games this year. And so they have a lot of players where you're like, huh. Yeah, gosh. Well, in pirates fans didn't have to edit the pirates list, so they get to enjoy the farm system without having done any of the work. Let me just say that roster resource has googlebot leading off for them. Yeah. It'd be fun. Yeah. Prototypical lead author. Oh gosh. Yeah, and I had not grappled with Ben gamel is still on this team. That's fine, you know? Even some of their players who aren't good on the big league roster are at least seem like fun guys, like colt Tucker seems like a good hang, so you at least have people you can like, but yeah..

"Blake. Snell had Perfect game into the seventh inning. He allowed pair of walks in the top of that seventh, but he was well, we're waiting to hear the results of 212 out situation with Joe Adele. But even for all of Snell's great word, the Padres have only three hits on the night. And the No hitter is done, and so is the lead as Joe Adele, with a base hit, has scored a pair of runs and the Angels lead. The Padres two to nothing in the seventh inning at Petco one other game still going on there in the eighth inning in Phoenix, the Rangers lead the Diamondbacks 321. As for the finals, the Pirates got a two run single from Ben Gamel in the sixth inning that gave them a 32 advantage. That was the final score in their game with Detroit. One time Rocky Sam Howard got the win for the buccos. Pete Alonso. He had homers number 31 32. He has now hit 101 home runs in his career. He is one of the fastest players in baseball history. To get to 100 home runs Cookie. Carrasco, who has been out much of the year with the leg issue, got his first win as a Met. New York beats Miami 9 to 4 as he Albee's hit a two run homer. Adam Duvall hit a three run homer for all these. It was his fourth straight game with a home run. Braves at home, beat Washington 8 to 5. The Red Stop the Cubs seven game winning streak. Jonathan India and Nick Castano's had a home runs to back Wade. Miley. You want his 12th? Cincinnati four, Chicago three. Eric Lower, went seven shutout innings, scattering four hits to win his fifth of the year. Four different brewers had at least two r B I s Milwaukee blanked Philadelphia 10 to nothing. In what might be one of his final games in ST Louis Albert holes, would hit a home run in his first at bat for the Dodgers. It would be a pair of homers from Justin Turner and another one from Will Smith in the Dodgers, 7 to 2 victory over the Cardinals. The Dodgers used on a bullpen night. Nine different pitchers over the course of the nine innings to get the seven to win. That's the Chevy Sports Desk scoreboard. We'll wrap things up in a moment on the Ko Iraqis radio network. Thanks for listening to K away news radio. Don't.
