"In Baltimore, I'm Amy Scott in for Kai riz doll. It's Wednesday, July 13th, good to have you with us. You've probably heard the headline number by now, the consumer price index rose 9.1% in June compared to a year ago. That's the biggest increase since 1981. And it's what the bureau of labor statistics calls broad based, which is a euphemism for pretty much everywhere. That said, there were some particulars driving this month's surge, some of them might be temporary. Others not so much. Marketplaces sabri Ben Asher looks ahead to see what might be in store. In just one month, from May to June, prices rose 1.3%. The numbers haven't moved that much in a month in 17 years. Energy was about half of that. Justin widener is a U.S. economist at Deutsche Bank. Inflation's number one driver in June was the cost of gasoline. Up 60% year over year. But on the right side. Gas prices are already down 40 cents from their peak. So with oil falling, gas prices should continue to decline. So 6 months from now, we probably knock on wood won't be talking about gas prices driving up inflation. But inflation is running on a lot more than gas. Food was another big driver, up 10% year over year. Alan det Meister is an economist at UBS. We're likely to continue to see very strong increases in food prices given the increases in wages, given the increases in food commodity, prices over the last 6 months. The war in Ukraine is still disrupting global food supplies and doesn't look like it's going to resolve any time soon. And then rounding out the top three drivers of inflation last month. There's the rent. Which is a highly persistent and very sticky inflation measure. Simon Harvey is with monex Europe. The rent index rose .8% in June that's the biggest monthly jump since 1986. And the nasty thing about rent is that it rarely ever goes down. But in, say, 6 months, Harvey says it should at least, not be rising as much as it is now. Show to most probably will still be adding somewhat near as much inflation pressure but somewhat. Now looming behind all of this is, of course, the Federal Reserve, trying to fight inflation by raising interest rates. These inflation numbers make it clear that fight is only just the beginning. Again, Alan det Meister at UBS. This is showing inflation is still extremely strong, very little sign that anything the fed has done up to this point is slowing inflation yet. Debt Meister says the fed's efforts may not show strong results until the beginning of next year. In New York, I'm sure for marketplace. On Wall Street, today, traders saw those inflation figures and ran. We'll have the details

Trump administration tariffs on Chinese imports that are still in effect. The Biden administration is reviewing its China policy, including what to do about the tariffs. A survey of U. S. The Biden administration has also accused Chinese officials of stealing intellectual property from US companies and President Biden has blamed China for cyber attacks in the US linking Beijing to hackers. "Midweek version of our popular game show. What is Jay Powell thinking? In five words or less, except supreme Ben Asher is going to get a whole lot more than five words with which to answer. And here's Why come the end of the week Friday, Powell is going to be giving a big speech at the Fed's annual gathering in Jackson, Hole, central bankers and economists and researchers and offense here's rubbing elbows virtually again this year, of course, And the theme of the whole thing. Is macro economic policy in an uneven economy. But wrapped up in that not necessarily scintillating title is years of debate and controversy over who that policy has been serving. In an economy where inequality has been growing for decades, and what Powell and the Fed can actually do about it. Here's Sabri. The Fed's job is to keep the economy going hot enough. So as many people as possible have jobs but not so hot that we get too much inflation in the economy. But when we say the economy Whose economy are we talking about? Black and Brown workers live in an economy that we generally as a country would consider recession. Almost all the time. Claudia Som is a senior fellow with the Jane Family Institute. She's referring to the fact that black unemployment has been twice white unemployment for decades. Adam Posen is president of the Peterson Institute for International Economics. The Fed cannot with the tools that its disposal directly converged differences in unemployment rates or wage gaps. The tools Posen is talking about amount. In a nutshell to nudging interest rates. That's the equivalent of pressing the gas or tapping the brakes in the economy. It may not affect inequality directly, but it does affect it indirectly because the longer the economy gets the gas, the more that disadvantaged people can benefit. Don't let your foot off the gas before you get to the deaths Nation. The concern in years past was that by applying the gas pedal for too long, the Fed might create inflation. You're going to run off the road or blow out the engine. But Posen says After the great recession, it became apparent that fear was overblown. Many more Americans could have been helped by a hotter economy during that period. Benjamin Dull. Chin directs the Fed up campaign, which has been pushing the Fed to change its approach like it's great that the Fed is sort of acknowledging that they need to change their models acknowledging their mistakes, But they've got a lot of deliberate damage to make up for Still, some question the idea that the Fed keeping the gas pedal on for longer than it has in the past will help Americans without summoning the specter of inflation and you'll catch up. Is a professor at the Booth School of Business. There's no theoretical reason that has to work this way. It's not approved and there's no theory that doesn't have to be true. But the Fed has very clearly taken some lessons from the last recession, and it's reasonable to expect that the foot on the national economic gas pedal will be a little heavier this time around. In New York. I'm suburban ashore for marketplace up just a bit on Wall Street today, but enough of a bit to hit a couple of new record highs. We'll have the details when we do the numbers. Mm. Mhm Mhm. Word out of the White House today is that there is one more.

"Movies. But yeah i just i. I don't know. I'll never look at her or chris pine the same way ever again. That's all i'm saying so yes so once. I saw that. I almost like john. Malini has no idea what he's in for. I don't think he knows he's like we met at church. Then and you're trying. I support him in his sobriety and again send blessings because he's going to need them with this is gonna give me a lot of reading material later. Thank you haley. Thank you some wingstop and draw through those. It'd be a good night. What else is out there in the atmosphere hollywood land. I don't know biggest news thing that stuck out to me this week. Was ellen getting really salty about the cancellation of her show. Yes go off. I need all the details about this. Okay so she had several interviews what she had one where i ended up seeing the clip on on tiktok but she had an interview with savannah guthrie and she had asked her years ago. Like when you're chauffeur started your mantra was be kind and ellen psycho that to be my mantra. It took a life of its own. It was just something that i said the one time and she's trying to play it off as if that wasn't like what's wrong with your brand. That's fantastic go okay. I mean it only becomes an issue when you're discovered to not be kind of a person and so then ben asher she's like so if you could do it all over again and pick new motto for your show. What would it be and she said. Go f- yourselves. oh yes. She's really not happy. I think about the way that people perceive her these days about the cancellation of her show and so her show was straight cancelled. It it's gonna end. After the the nineteenth season. I was reading somewhere that she was. Also interviewing with oprah yeah. She was like mentioning that she was like. It was already a plan to and Okay yeah whichever kinda calling. Bs because it would make more sense to end at twenty and savannah. Guthrie brought that up and it was like well why not push to twenty and ellen went on this whole big rant about nineteen is actually better than twenty because one is the start of something and nineteen is the end of something and so it's the right place to finish but i don't know i think i like most of america was pretty. You know into ellen show for a long time. At least recently. I have forgotten that it was even on. So i'm not really gonna miss it but i i definitely not here for the salty ellen. No it's one thing to bow out gracefully but it's a whole other thing to try to pin the blame on other people and this is so disappointing. Like gosh she seemed so genuinely nice and funny so many of those earlier clips and she such an icon for like. I mean the way that she came out and like that magazine cover. Like i'm gay like she's just she liked for so many things. And then all the sudden it's just like yeah. The scorched earth departure Is just like now. She's just to be on all. This kinda reminds me of rosie o'donnell's downfall. When she had her show in the nineties. She was known as the queen of nice to like that was her whole shtick. Was just like how nice she was. And then all of a sudden she went on. What was it the view or she got passed on one of those shows and like she's a to i don't know there's this parody account on twitter and my god is the funniest thing that i follow on twitter and it's called ellen show and i'm just gonna redo some of the tweets. Young one of them is putting hand sanitizer on my car before running over my interns. Another one is as long as i have the rage inside of me i can never lose other is hello at postmates. My order is two weeks late. Which office do i set on fire. And i am telling. This is the funniest thing i've follow. If i need to laugh i will. Just scroll through his twitter page and it's so funny. Oh that's easy okay. we. I have one more. I'm sorry this one's really funny. I just read. It

"Other weekend weather looking a hell of a lot better than the last weekend of Jerry Recco is back with his update what's happening Jerry our guys couple things before you get to the sounding a lot of it obviously I've worn because of what happened earlier in the show talking about how cool it is being a part of different things in all the different gear so I've gone with all sorts of things Columbia I've got with B. E. F. five gone with my Saint John Vianney high school and a lot of regular stuff too I just want to see a big congratulations out my god my god Ben Asher over Rutgers had a baby boy the other day who is literally sleeping at home right now watching you guys so nothing graduations to them Maxwell to abandon his wife Danielle so congrats to them nice very cool man he's responsible for all the free area for records right now you now you're wearing a Christian McCaffrey teacher aria MLB it's an MLB teacher that mark Chernoff check that flag and anthem centers G. yeah yeah that the Christian McCaffrey won the day with his charity on it does look very similar to that and now most can feel better because he's not the only one who sleeps the radio shows this baby also all right so you've changed your mind having you now I'm just the fact that he seemed a little bothered by it it's sort of like I now I feel like I've got a burst through the salt on the wound stuff so I mean I don't know I just having it's it's not fun for me defending him it's more fun believing that he fell asleep but if you get me in pure honesty I still think it's hands slipped and he did not fall asleep but the evidence is mounting out there in the public is against him clearly so somebody's obviously turned your initial thought process around a little bit yeah I mean the more and more people I hear that think that he's asleep by start to go the other way and when I had these two anonymous colleagues text me yesterday and explained to me that most is the type of guy that could fall asleep within two seconds I had to I had to rethink it but if you're telling me I got to make a final answer I'm still saying no it did not happen I regardless of how healthy or unhealthy moves may be that's really tough to fall asleep in in under two seconds like that to go from like not a get an answer to a question that I think you know he's like he's like a football player is like a football player you know football players and you know cannot off like that in a heartbeat and then when it comes third in fifteen and you won over something on Thursday and that guy happened to be asleep in that meeting it screws you yeah I can't even imagine yeah the old film session nap that happens to many people sorry we got Sir we go we got a couple of things here we'll start with Harold Reynolds on with tiki and Tierney on CBS sports network yesterday so there's a lot of opinions with this whole baseball thing with the proposals gone back and forth hi here is Harold Reynolds as point blank do you think that there will be a season that reflects me all market that's not it at the I don't know what that was I'm very optimistic I always have been it comes down to one thing I don't care about the negotiations that will get taken care of question is are they going to be safe and healthy and he went on to say that they're doing a really good job in that way so he believes they'll play one thing that was concerning Jeff Passan said I forget where I read it I don't know what interview he did and he's pretty dialed in he believes that there are owners in baseball that they don't want to play that just think they're going to lose too much money and if the players don't want to take the sliding scale so be it will move on the next year and that's if that's true that kind of goes back to a time Pierre McGuire bummer about some players not wanting to play if that's the case that would be really disappoint I think I look I don't know who peer maybe talking to but the players that I have spoken to all want to play I know the hurricanes are not very happy that they have to play the New York Rangers but you know you just never know until you get on the ice how everybody's going to be and what they're going to look like and what kind of shape the team's going to be and then what's going gets hot but you know there are some complaining there but at the end of the day isn't the the the idea to get all the sports fact to get back to some normalcy to get these guys doing what they do best and that is the place sports competitively so we can enjoy it you would think that's the idea I know but that's why the NHL's coming back in and again there's not really a lot of fight about money now there will be fight about money next year an escrow money and all that other stuff but hopefully football doesn't you know have to deal with the the union and have to take money away from the players that's not going to go over well here is our Ron Gardenhire who is talking about managing during this pandemic he's not a young man anymore and he says figure out a way to do it give me a walkie talkie and I'll just go on and I don't care as long as you do this thing say you know I'm sixty two years old I've had cancer and and all of that blood sugar stuff so right and I don't want to be prime so we'll just take it easy and let the smarter people well here and then I'll do what they ask is best I possibly can Gardenhire on Sirius MOB radio on the smarter people are the health professionals they're helping MOB along with this and he says so far likes what he sees believe me they're doing everything possible and they're going to do everything possible and they they know the number one you know people the top tier people who really have to you know be taken care of and guarded because of our age a lot of the managers coaches and they they've done a just a super job what this note that they're going to do everything they possibly can right there are no guarantees that do everything possible to make right for all of us and we'll see where we go today assuming that the players do offer that counter proposal that we are expecting in the reports say they won a hundred games and they want their full pro rated salaries do not know how realistic that is but that's where we're at also of note you've got from football Joe Flacco meeting with the media you know virtually of course as they do it on the zoom conferences here was Flacco who's asked point blank why'd you why'd you sign with the jets now because you could have waited for maybe someone to get hurt in training camp and find yourself a starting job that kind of the thought process I was back and forth on for awhile but I also really think it's important to get on a team and get comfortable with with the guys on the team and get comfortable with Sam in this in this situation get comfortable with the offense that you know and then at some point be running in some capacity that having been said he'll be the backup to Sam Darnold thoughts on not not being the guy both fully immersing it I mean it's where I am right now and I'm glad to be on a team playing football you know in some capacity and I think it's it's going to be huge to get in there and I know the guys and and develop a relationship with the team and do anything I can to help the team get better now while I do you know what I would call that I would call that a very bowl dose of self awareness is what I would because you're only making a million five right and in a lot of backup quarterbacks in this league are making over seven million dollars so and he is a Super Bowl winner he's made a lot of money and you know I think he's using the little humble pie there's no question about it that's what happens and I think cam Newton is going to have to eat some humble pie to the question is is where though I'm glad you brought him up because Ron day barber was out with tiki and Tierney on CBS sports network and CBSSports radio yesterday and he was questioning cam Newton a backup we don't want to spend the type of money to bring out her cam Newton if he's not going to be your starting quarterback you can spend a lot of money to become a backup I don't know that okay I'm gonna take a million dollar contract by Janice did to be the back up and all of that I don't I don't see them doing that or just lack of yeah that's right and that's why and everything that comes along with cam you know that's the thing so it has to be you know I would love to see him go to New England I'd love to see him go to Pittsburgh I don't think he will go to Pittsburgh assembling band would want on their knowing one only because maybe you know that would put a little pressure on Saddam and I don't know maybe maybe he will learn much like I think Janus is gonna learn in New Orleans with Payton and drew one more from rondae he was asked if he's surprised that he's still out there unsigned at this point for god to have his credentials and still be on the street you know there's there's something there and I I I I'm not close with him not because of that situation so I don't know but it is not out there yeah well why isn't odd I don't understand why it's odd I was at TQ said why I think that was taking yeah I think so yeah I mean just because I mean I'm because I'm a lot while we just be Frank number one he's injured number two you know he's a huge personality number three even though he said a week ago or ten days ago that you you know it's going to be the back up you know what it is like number for how much money you're going to take to be the back up and who is my head coach and who is my starting quarterback right now our net are they going to be able to deal with the personality that you've created for yourself I mean there's there's there's a lot of the it is not it's not it's not a the available jobs well it's well there were you know and then they were filled by other guys who they believe they would fit that role better than cam you know like Jamis seem to be maybe a little more humbled in cam was that spot I mean obviously Joe Flacco mi cams is a guy that he also had more success than all of those guys I'm a starting jobs I mean about it almost as I ended almost one of those guys yeah and then finally getting released the Bengals kind of screwed up because they've released in late and he decides to stay home because of the the covert nineteen stuff and he stays in Dallas I think the best like Kimmel's mountain dew they can do is what he's doing wait for someone to get hurt in training camp and go take a starting job because he doesn't want to be a backup regardless we have sympathy at the you know the interesting thing is right but the interesting thing is like you just don't show up and become a starter again a new offense I don't mean something as I got to tell you guys that that you know I guess between Haskins blows in the out in Washington what Ron Rivera then reach out to cam Newton and bring him in I I could see that I guess that could be switching a heart beat right so but Ron Rivera is the I don't I don't think Washington would be bringing him in in that situation because that would really put an enormous amount of pressure on a second year quarterback who stumbled out of the gate his rookie year and that's probably the last thing that the.
