"Were dreadful against chelsea on the first on the fest game. Season point. A west ham. I think based on west ham's fullness as in and actually the full at the beginning of this season as well i don't think was a dreadful results either. I'm getting there. I one of the season against the site that was talking to the table. Clean sheet yes. Buzz went down. ten men. bay was quite feisty. Before that. And i think they held wrong. They weren't really. They didn't really seem to be under the cost. That much. the tongue thing with saja he knows he gets fouled by less take one of the premises previously most fouled players has a house kind of were like a badge ivana. You never really saw him. As far as i can remember you never really saw has to go after place. He found him afterwards. It was kind of like well. Yeah of course he did. He very much gave the energy. I mean he kind of has energy. Anyway disney huddle all these a little bit aloof like wolf. Just doesn't have he wants to smoke. I one day every time he got fouled. If you just kinda just like well yeah. This is gonna happen because i'm not good as opposed to just going after people. I wonder i'm not by putting the blame on him because he gets the shit kicked off him. But you know what i mean like his reactions ganga on the weekends kind of i think gave tango. They like i'm trying to say is i'm from word in this so badly mono i know. I know i won't will. I want to be the best player. He can be bay. And i think he gives his reactions to the way he's treated. I think gives defended too much joy. And they know they ram. That's why it keeps going to notes with so strange. Not strange watching. Stranger ascetics watching this game and i thought i thought the offense. I thought it's like a common across the night sky. Ryan is trailing rooks dustin like stellar material everywhere dot spor zohar. Zohar is like a rooney type thing in terms of look look at rooney against newcastle without volley. Right he screaming. The referee. freekick doesn't get the bulldog smack in the corner and it's like what's the easiest a tasmanian devil. That's what rain rooney is like these players. There are certain plays who that is they are. And i couldn't help but think it's funny. You mentioned that i saw saw on. He was he was out last tango school. That like penalty really. Cooley scored the penalty. And i think his whole thing his whole rage his whole energy dots like his thing is his essence. The other thing i think is what about It's interesting. I think he's one of those players that is just funny. I think he's a homebody when raise raise went to other clubs and he did a riot yet she so capable race at severe. There's an element of like keenum. Betty's he's basically a kind of english joaquin was like exactly just took a gentleman. Brief glop acting came up. I generally think he's one of those players that is just a homebody and the best saw hallway ever gonna see is a palace. I just think he's like that. You just get those people ryan. Jiang et totally. I'm like no. I know what you're saying. It wasn't a criticism of zohar Tool because i really like it was just more like you can tell by the treatment that he gets from people just like you bother them a law. I think that that was almost this. The tango thing was interesting so that competition thoughts even though he was the one with the rage as well as like but he's in control. I saw tun ganga's on your non control of this because saw both dishes trying to kind of almost like overwhelm you. It's so weird. The psychology of taking place on his. It's the whole context of like passive mental integration like sledging cricket. I think it was in there. Yeah i think it was another tank. I think he had. He kept him a level. So this is like this is like amateur psychology. But i saw something wounded about well. If i'm not saying that like i'm not doing the kind of like the the talk radio will ever kind of like a mentality thing no no. I'm just saying that. I do wonder because will shows up like say she may be his kind of like a not every like mc c. has to be magro some. Let's just a little bit more in conflict blah blah blah. But then some people's if the ones who are managua took the aggression outfit they wouldn't be half the embassy they were. Yeah exactly sometimes so. It's like delivering this the deliberate. So maybe she wills. Delivery is is what makes him. It was more of a question as opposed to criticism. Like whether i wonder whether it gives defend his more satisfaction knowing that you can kind of read his his state during the game. I love the time. Heals has a very strange status in the premier league in terms of feet does. Doesn't they hatch. Because he's like a of a unicorn if you think of like there are very few permanent teams. Of whom so much is expected creatively until as they came along saw was carrying a lot. That's a big big big pook burden slash pressure to go out. There was almost like a kind of chat greatest type thing but even more so than he had. I would say she had overburden than greenish to be. Honest in times of war is expected..

"Made them all got her hundred goals for arsenal last week. Now i know obviously the main kind of newsy story is old trafford. We'll talk about latin bit because stepping away from the occasion side of it. I think it was actually quite routine money. I mean a four new cost is not unprecedented. For united's i actually want to sell his dog. If i because i think the intensive it's seismic result the season i think this is. I think this is a bigger result. Obviously spurs kind of concede the go one all of that game so far quietly doing a lovely job easing himself into the role new and then they get hit with his three notify. us out. Ola goes came after tongue cod. Yeah i mean not existential. We talk about the first foul on wolf. Can i be honest with you. I reckon it wasn't the foul. Because basically i saw her dozen for speed on the outside and he brings him down the may square up to each other. And i think that had enough i think he was. You can never tell what these things but maybe still quite a bit rattled because that was such an intense set to employers garate like that they were ready. Join each other and there's not often in most. These plays doing that like it. Feels like a kind of a phony war. You don't feel it's gonna become actually physical but with that like genuine animosity and when make a second foul a second yellow. It wasn't a dirty five. Felt like just mistimed but it felt like he was still like his blood was still up. Does that make sense. And it broke up in such a tight game the thing with palaces by one issue with them over the last couple has been does will fits all have like a reliable kind of rating partner as from deep saw house attack. But you feel like they've always needed that kind of dead. I finish now. They've if they've got another because they've pulled up a little bit routes while i was going to say on a gallagher man long ago he's been it's been superb and then edward on top of that two goals while after twenty seven seconds after coming on fastest privy league goalscoring debutante ranga unreal unreal. I control second touch. Finish is really really impressive. what What palestine spas now. It's one result Talk game it was a home all the rest of it but they have to call from. This really encouraging. The we've seen so many times before in any league how a reliable finish can just shoot you up the tape. And they could have something exciting head of them. I mean it's just you know sample size of one game. They could exciting compliments ahead. I think as it come back as well as some point the only in the league. They've only lost chelsea so far they always know against. Bradford was a They weren't. I don't think they were dreadful against chelsea on the first on the fest game. Season point. A west ham. "Very kind opening to the season s. I was going to be interesting to see how they manage the toughe- faces when they come around and also the champions 'cause lille this week but then you have buying in second. They obviously be leipzig on the weekend. Who are struggling. And i know sunny full games into jesse mashes tenure but buying up life to go back to promoting schools to make it full full one away in a fixture which over the last few years has been probably one of the most brilliantly intense fixtures in the bundesliga be amazing trio last year the amazing three luster data is with this game and that was the mo the most iconic thing that the most striking thing for me was watching. Sabato and chemists combining because those are two players who were coal to rb leipzig drive in the last years and both times binders came and swooped. It took them a nagas. Me the sideline bike dot. Radio is the kind of underlying story this in terms of you know buying binds. Debt has just mindblowing right and then at the same time of buys his mind blowing avi locks he made five changes mccain before so the team that bind played. I mean buying were pretty much full strength right. Would you came in. Because i mean. He left leipzig six years ago. Yeah but like twenty years old play the played like he was. Yeah he said he was going to be like next. You know if he's doing what if they hang on to commit then is a different guy. Were wash look hung onto him will absolutely absolutely right so like just a symbol. Like the symbol of buying absorbing the best talent connor during the season author. "Control. But the fact is it goes straight into the path. Yeah yeah. I mean again. This is something that brunt did that. Lifezette game i keep talking about the schools dot goal. Everyone i literally did the bobby robson renaldo thing. I stood up in the press. Box won't my hands on my head and was just like holy shit or the i seen. Yeah it was amazing. And he has that capability in brand. He's such an intriguing player. Because like i say only stay. He can be really hard to play against. He looked like he was gonna stop thriving in a deeper role for dortmund. I didn't work because i don't think. He just the defensive hats with their takia. I think he's obviously physically a big dude. I think it's just the the awareness defensively in the connor Any i just don't think he's as scrappy as modi huda or even to bellingham. I think being pressed as well. You know what it is. It's such a specific if you did play kind of pillar type thing is such a specific requirement to escape that pressure. It's not that he can't do it. It's just. I think the him to a row. Such a complete reconfiguration of of everything. Yeah so. I think he still has really. I think he is still great. As kind of wide blake playmaker white forward but as dortmund their apps he stopped in those positions talk. It has to come back your arena. Yeah gio arena was missing because he got injured on its national to nothing y you'll Played and with vitriol. Gone back into midfield with that kind of makes woman look a little bit. more steady. going forward does light. We say labor coups into the lead three times vets with the first chick on half time and then diabe About ten minutes into the second-half grover leveled it with a free cake. Which roy's new was in before it went in his hands. Went up before it even hit. The back of the net was an amazing free from error and then obviously the penalty which low people missed. Once via muckleroy roy spicy was run into was the bottom line. Getting shepherd out he kind of like a flick in the face and i think i think it was soft by thank. You was a foul right. Yeah one of those like notice penalty against by where it's like. It just shouldn't have been that the defenders shouldn't have done it didn't need to do but it's still a penalty because it's just right there. Yeah it shouldn't yeah it should. It looks soft because it's like oh that was a piece of defended need to happen like the situation was under control. So yeah but it was a penalty in the whole coast. Doing what holden does push it away. Nice and calm runs over to the corner alot. To stop flying jib bellingham was on his back celebrating. And my core the reflexes to do that the thing is. I wish you hadn't actually taken a sip. He took us and then spotted our yet. Don't drink during croom. That's been thrown from the crowd. Please bring your. But i think it's just a reflex because he coy and it did to be. Fa- looked amazing. Yeah i think. I think doing it was almost like you in the moment in the flow of lights for your client but i think also i couldn't hear what of what they were saying. The fans but they were exceptionally vocal. I eat from the very beginning. It was very loud. Yeah wow well. It was very loud. The fans assigned to increase more in germany. His estan to get very loud hope. They'll look back on that game and be like this was. This really showed us something. Yeah i mean. I th i to be honest i think the interesting thing about this game is obviously because you look at the punta zeke number. Four games in wolfsburg still top. Of course they are. they will but they will. They will fall away. I don't think they will. They've had quite a kind of course. of course there was just. It's just really funny. How they always do. "Yeah credit was incredible. Because i think what i would like to say festival is still one which is something. Because that's a tough place to go. This fixture has been a difficult unfulfillment. Leiva kuzan at certain points in the first half looked like the team that looked so dangerous last year up until christmas. Yeah they've only they haven't won away. In labor census two thousand nine and that pressing was ferocious in first off in particular. It wasn't crib. Mesa diabe debbie flores is running movement was unbelievable. They were paulino to like dripping. They absolutely swarmed plays. Now bits will come out with senate defense. Who's playing since defense before. Come back into field occasions where we saw him looking up and he was angry at the lack of passing options. Because i mean basically. They went. Sort of axioms funny. There was a power between what levekusen did to dortmund. And what chelsea basie match play for player and the press them impacts and it was brilliant. A harry them all over the pitch and they made them run Bellingham actually struggle to play forward. Not because he was starting to play capacities but because he was like safety. I mode look swamped the first half hour but that wasn't really about individual problem was more like the quality of life cruises pressing and a lot of people were busy correctly wherever you're watching foreign bits buying cars to pay more attention to him supply of because he was she evolving. I'd like to say if we get. Further analysis is the the thing about the union brown. He's been out. Covert and also down. The pecking order playmakers. You brought us in this game with. I think we'll be one of the goals. This season union brought my mind. Yes just things that he can do that. Almost no nelson worth will can do. Yeah it's amazing isn't he. He's one of those players who we did unplayable episode. yes i think. He's quite an unplayable. Because i think he's a little bit more consistent than i don't think he's mercurial now. I think you're right but he's one of those players who has an extremely high ceiling when we see it we really said. I think i've i've talked about a few times on the puck. Casper when i was at the three against leipzig and the best fallen he just ran the game. He's unrealism yeah he's unreal and i thought he was. He was so good on side. I mean his goal was amazing. Because i mean jonah go through the goals will my one quickly kiss or join us quickly. Because obviously levekusen took the lead after nine minutes jump around chamunda at and she mentioned put them ahead and this is one of the impressive things about dolman that they went behind twice three times actually sorry and came back each time and then went onto win the game which i think is this is the kind of game that dortmund up a bit cheesy but it is a statement victory like do you think this is. I think it is because because they've already lost one game to freiburg right to society in the seasons about they were down. The barrel shit gets the goal on the stroke of time to put them to up and leave because he's been banging full schick and you're like while dortmund chasing again and we've seen them so often found in this position right and they kept playing football they playful and they began to win the midfield battle as well. This was a big deal to because goodness party late because must've been exhausted but they started to press back. They thought to impose themselves. He sought to play well on the counter. Stretch the mauka. Roy's shout out to him his work. Some of his work was breathtaking. Son pastures play. When the him brent poland and bellingham combined. They looked a spellbinding. Anything you will see in the top league was quite good choice. It's looking like a good choice. For manca royce skip the euro ours. I think he must have been a really tough decision for him. Especially if someone.

Who a patient and the pastor and the got the job done. I don't think it was brilliant from them over the two games But it was certainly good enough. And i think dortmund can have many complete. I mean you can complain about the decision false game when the referee chopped off the bellingham goal but over the two legs. There was no surprise. We'll just a little bit too strong. But i thought they made a little bit work of the one hundred and eighty minutes then then then it should have been. I think when the draw was initially made made them we thought this is a bank city. We'll get through. No problem is craig said that made to work hard for it. I wouldn't necessarily say it was a banker but realistically call it. Favorable draw but the way that cities basically gone through this game here. It's been since about what had been like so far. Twenty twenty one. "I would like to start by introducing you to nikki. tomlinson nikki. Tomlinson is an icu. Nurse at great plains health which is in north platte nebraska. At one point in time we had a physician here that everybody knew really well known him for a long time. Then a family doctor for a long time. That was my lowest point I still get teary thinking about it That i've been a nursing for twenty years and that was actually my breaking point. I when he didn't make it i had to. I already had some time off scheduled in that couldn't come at a better time I couldn't get through the next day of work without breaking down for an hour Our every hour was that was probably my darkest time at work. My darkest time over and my last twenty years of nursing so that was a. I was hard and then seeing some other family and friends come in That have fought this. That have beat this. That are scared along the way and other patients. That just aren't making it. I've never seen anything like cova. There's i we don't we just don't know enough about it. We learn new things every day and it seems like things change every day and i it. Just that's the one thing. That's constant about covid fluctuate senate changes and we just learn new things all the time. And that's what makes it scary. I've been a nurse for twenty years. And i've never experienced out like this. It's we're working. Extra shifts were working. We do great as a team but the the stress the emotional stress the physical stress that it is putting on us being there for the patients. Which is what we got into nursing. Four we're the only ones that can be there for some of these patients that most emotional stress losing them. is just. I've never experienced anything like it before. So the emotional and the physical stress. It's exhausting absolutely exhausting. I don't know how we are getting through it. We are but. I don't know how what i'm thankful for right now. During all this time is my health. My fellow coworkers health and my family know my family understanding how many how i have to work the long hours and not always be home during all of this And adapting to a can't touch mommy when you get home or to run and take a shower and And their health. I just hope it continues. But she's thankful for is her own health and the fact that her family doesn't have this. The family hasn't gotten it and she hopes that continues. That's what she's thankful for. Last night. i talked here about my own experience being home in quarantine. I tested negative. But i've been taking care of my partner. Susan while she sick i just wanna say to. Everybody reached out and was so nice. Response it was overwhelming. Actually was really kind. It was had to pick a word. I would say it was boolean to me and susan. So thank you everybody. But you know susan i will be are going to be okay. We are coming out of this. She is coming out of that. She is going to recover the people who i'm really worried about. I'm thinking about even as we're going through our own experiences beyond everybody who's sick and suffering right now. Susan has been these past couple of weeks beyond the eighty thousand plus americans who are in the hospital right now with kovic. The most we've ever had mean beyond the people who are suffering directly themselves trying to fight for their lives with this thing that people are really worried about the healthcare workers who are all over the country right now. We're staring down both barrels of this without the kind of support that they had in the spring when this all started with this now just tidal wave of cases and hospitalizations and deaths all coming down on them directly and personally in a way that does not feel sustainable in terms of them being able to keep doing it and terms of keeping them back stop keeping them supplied keeping them at work keeping the american health system open and able to function so frankly not to be too blunt about it but so save abol people can be saved. That's what i'm worried about. Is our health workers right now in the strain on them this many months into it with things. This bad right now i mean. Here's the front page. Today of the atlanta journal constitution. And you see the mix there right. I mean politically. Of course the big news out of georgia is that georgia. This is this morning's papers. They finish their recount. Yesterday showed once again. That biden clearly won the stage that set the stage. Today for georgia formerly certify its results and of course that's significant news. We'll talk more about that later tonight but but look at. What else is sharing the front page with that. Huge political news right see. Stay home for the holiday. Georgia state health official. Ads rethink traditional thanksgiving below that. There's the biggest front page headline in atlanta. Today it makes me shake with anger. That's a quote from a doctor who works in a covert war in atlanta talking about people blowing off the risk as the number skyrocket and as the hospitals get overwhelmed. You see their healthcare workers on the front lines feel. They are fighting a losing battle as public floats safety rules. That's georgia today. It's the same song up in minnesota. Today this is the west central tribune in willmar minnesota front page headline today. A plea for help. Hospitals are perilously close to running out of workers. It's one thing to run out of beds beds can be found in moved and bought but enough healthcare staff to take care of patients who are in those beds. State virus rate's the worst since the beginning of pandemic all over the country right and as as overwhelming as this crisis is may now tonight. We've just learned that. The president's eldest son and namesake. Donald trump junior has it as well he has tested. Positive is reportedly isolating hope that he doesn't get symptoms so far apparently doesn't god blessed and maybe the president's eldest son who has such a high profile in the republican party now and in conservative media. Now maybe that will have an impact on thinking about this thing at the white house and in the conservative media on the right maybe even if the president himself getting it didn't seem to light a fire under them. I don't know but as overwhelming as this crisis is we are avoidably at this moment in history where we have two huge totally unprecedented crises. Heading simultaneously the minneapolis star tribune. Aircraft Delivery Founder Steve Giordano (Co-Founder and Managing Director of Jet Test & Transport)
"But I started jet test. Kind of as a hobby while I was at allegiant early on even when I was based in Vegas. The idea and what does it do? Well so I first and foremost at the time jet test didn't exist. I just blind the line flying de Moines and flying to Bellingham Washington and Fargo and might not you know in the MD eighty and I was flying with this is what I was photos the beginning I was flying with the captain and he said you know we hit it off and he said Hey this weekend I'm burying a D. C. Nine thirty over to Belgrade Serbia and I could use I could use an F. O. and I was like Yeah County, and I've got a passport and I get paid. was. Very. Done for for I L F, C at the time. I don't as they don't remember it could have been. We did a lot for C. we still do for air cap, which is now let's see but I don't remember who the customer was, but we were basically. So he was like a like a freelance. Highlight. For Higher. He just went in and jobs and I had no idea that existed and so it was an opportunity for me someone that just loves to travel I had never really had the experience of flying internationally besides Mexico and Canada and stuff. So of course, I jumped on that opportunity and I I still remember that whole trip like like it happened yesterday because it was my first time flying across the ocean. Sure. It was show. You. How long were you gone from the time started to the time you returned home. I think it was probably done about three or four days. So we got over there, and then of course, we hung out that we hung out for a day. You know nowadays we get well forget it. I, mean cove it makes it impossible to even leave the airport for the most part, but that's another story. But you know at the time. Even, we're so busy we we generally move from trip, but at that point in time, I had never been to Eastern Europe and I had gone wants to Ireland and wants to Germany as you know as a as a team but. Anyway. It was it was awesome. We walked around drink beer and had good food at the restaurants and and it was just it was just such a cool experience that the first thing that I did when I got back with say what's next? When can I do this again? And it turned into, you know I was I was I made myself available and I was ferrying airplanes mostly DC nine, some dash eight, some MD eighties because that was all I was typed on. And I was doing a trip every couple of months and whether it was domestic ferry you know or flying over to Asia. Started kind of doing the same thing as him and. What happened from there is you know I started getting type ratings I just I wanted to do it more and I wanted to make myself available on more more equipment. So the first thing I did was I went out and bought a seven thirty seven type. Crossed when you did it. I think it cost about eight nine thousand bucks. Yeah. It's really almost about the same as it costs today but you know I did it in an old seven, thirty, seven, two, hundred simulator which you can't find nowadays right And then and then I flew right seat on a lot of ferry flights until I got the experience and the confidence to to
Inland West Coast Roadtrips
"If, you're ready for a memorable road trip where there's more to explore the freeway rest stops Chandler O'Leary wants to take you up the US west coast. She joined us a few months ago with tips for driving the Pacific. Coast highway from San Diego to big Sur, the redwoods and the Pacific northwest rainforest. She's back to recommend a few of the inland highlights from the desert playground palm springs through the orchards. California's Central Valley, old western Sacramento, and all the way up to my home turf around Seattle the detailed in her book the Best Post, a road trip Alice Chandler welcome back. Thank you for having me. So we talked about the coastal route before now we're GonNa talk about the inland. Route make a case for not taking the coastal route because I would think everybody wants to go up the coast, but you make the inland sound pretty good. I feel like if you like your vintage, Americana this the road trip for you and yeah, you're not gonna see the coasts until you get all the way up to Washington but if you're really into things like palm springs and mid, century architecture old neon signs, a roadside attractions, you're going to get tons of that on this route. I love roadside attractions, publicity stunts from fifty of your. What are few of those that come to mind because I just think they're so funky. The giant oranges that used to be Oliver California and there's a couple of them left and they were they to be drink stands for you know when you were thirsty on the road, you get fresh California orange juice right and they're still a couple of them left along old either farm. There's farm country all the way along the way absolutely all three states. So we're going sixteen hundred miles and apparently it's the old isn't isn't like the highway ninety nine is of it is yeah and in California highway. Ninety nine mostly is still intact and it's even a freeway in some places, but once you get into Oregon and Washington because of the mountains, it starts getting a little bit tricky kind of pick. Cherry pick sections of the old road and then connect with I five. Yes. It's just like route sixty six how it's kind of been swallowed up by interstate in places like five is it's sort of the enemy on the other hand. It's practical because he gets you from A to B in a hurry. Yeah. What's your philosophy you're gonna go from going basically from San Diego to Bellingham Right What's your philosophy on the balance between I five in the old roads I think you wanna use I five when you WanNa, make good time and take the old rose if you wanna have a good time. That's kind of how I look at it good time or have a good time. That's good. So let's talk about California first of all New Mexico on one side of the border and collection collects. It collects co is on the or is on the California side and Mexico on the Mexico side. So that's where a route starts are these kind of sister towns in away or are unfortunately there's a big old wall separate him so you Or now you have to go through the big international the big national checkpoint because I did that between San Diego and Tijuana was easy just walk across I think right now that's not the same as it used to be, but it may be again I mean who who knows what we're starting in Calexico then What's the flavor of collects goes? That's just a springboard or anything to do there. It's a sleepy small town and but it's kind of you kind of get the flavor of where you're starting and you're going to start out in the low desert. You're below sea level here that's below civil come into palm springs. A waste. It is palm springs to us. Palm Springs is is kind of Wacky. It got big in the nineteen fifties. So there's a lot of great mid century architecture there, but it's very glamorous. It's very glitzy. There's a lot of designers their fashion show was movie stars that doesn't retirement communities to. snowbirds it's kind of this weird mix of college spring breakers and snowbirds. Okay. So you put that in your checklist and then some I know in your book, you talk about a lot of worthy detours you know in one of your favorites would be Joshua Tree National Park. Yes. Joshua tree is stunning and Joshua tree trees actually the high desert. So it's above palm springs at altitude. So it has a completely different desert climate different plants, different animals. So Joshua Tree is one of these cartoon book yeah. Of Justice Joshua Tree is these classic kind of quintessential cactus Yes. Yes. So what do you do in Joshua Tree National Park Jessica cactus there's a great hikes. There's actually only those cactus in one small part of the park is an enormous park. So there's different bombs great rock formations they are beautiful scenery and
Emergency ferry brings relief to isolated Point Roberts residents
"Point Roberts. Washington. A town, the very southern tip of the Watson Peninsula a peninsula mostly located in British Columbia Canada. But Point Roberts falls beneath the boundary line on the forty ninth parallel and is therefore a part of the united. States. But being a peninsula whenever residents want to cross into mainland. Washington. In the US they actually have to drive up through the border checkpoints of Canada and then back down into the US. This play how much of a hassle that might sound like it is residents in border agents reused used to it. The towns have an easy relationship, and for many the trip is only about a seven minute drive with point Roberts beans, such a small town. It wasn't uncommon for residents to pass through Canada Multiple Times a day as they ran errands and attended activities or work in both mainland Washington and in. Canada. But when cross border travel was restricted in March due to the pandemic, the thirteen hundred residents of point Roberts found themselves unexpectedly isolated the only other closure in recent memory was half a day following nine eleven and this one has gone on for months. Quoting Atlas Obscure Residents of Point Roberts can cross the border only to work, pick up prescriptions or go to a doctor's appointment in the mainland us and they're not allowed to stop in Canada at all during the trip. The only other way to reach the mainland is by private boat or in the twice weekly one, hundred, thirty, five dollars flight to Bellingham Washington and quotes. And it's not just US citizens in point Roberts trying to get to Washington even to familiar spots in Canada. They're also Canadian citizens who own homes, boats and livestock in point. Roberts that they've been unable to go take care of. And many businesses in point Roberts descend on tourism from Canadians especially during the summer months. According, again, Jesse had tinged who has three teenagers said that between the kids, sports, practices and errands it wasn't uncommon for across the border as frequently as nine times a day. Now, her daughter in accomplished gymnast and her Hockey Planes Son are trying to train via zoom in their backyard. My daughter's teammates are altogether in Canada there in the gym and their life hasn't changed. She said the last time the. Tinged drove through Canada for proved business on the mainland a Pang of sadness hitter when she passed her favorite Greek restaurant she and her husband used to go there every. Friday. They know the servers by name in the servers know their usual orders. Now however, it would be illegal for her to even pick up takeout order for us in point Roberts with the lack of services and ability to cross very. She said I feel like we're on house arrest and quotes. Point Roberts has an elementary school that serves children up to the third grade but after that, they have to take a forty minute bus ride through Canada to attend school in. Blaine. Washington on the mainland. Some residents like contingent son attend school in Canada either way if any of those schools are resuming in person classes, this fall point Roberts kids will be unable to attend many residents and local officials on both sides of the border of in writing petitions and sending letters to both president trump and prime minister trudeau for awhile nothing was changing. There was no response given to their unique situation however that finally changed this week when point Roberts residents finally got a small win once a week on Tuesdays. There will be a free ferry service from Point Roberts to Blaine Harbor in mainland Washington. Though it's free, residents have to register online in advance and it's all first come first serve there is the possibility of adding a second day a week if demand is high enough and US officials say they're working with their Canadian counterparts on some sort of travel exception since as of now, the travel ban is expected to go through at least the twenty first of September and probably be
Why We Need International Students
"And. We've been planning to do an episode on national students visas and the education system for the past few months. It seems like an underreported topic that people should know more about, but then it became part of the news. Students. Who the schools plan to online only classes in the fall, we'll have to transfer or leave the country or face possible deportation several prestigious American universities are now suing the trump administration the trump administration back down but I don't think it's the end for what we might save from this administration. You could be forgiven for thinking that student visas classic partisan issue in American politics liberals pushing for cultural diversity in a more open society while conservatives warn of dangerous to national security American jobs. But the real story is quite different for decades Republicans and Democrats agreed that a steady pipeline of the world's best minds into American. Universities is essential for our economy innovation and competitive advantage. But the rest of the world it was a system that largely worked. The trump administration has taken a different perspective and the pipeline of international students in into American businesses, hospitals and research facilities has begun to constrict as this happens other nations have begun picking up the slack. I'm Gabrielle Sierra and this is why it matters today international students and American competitiveness under threat. All right. So I'm a student in another country. Why do I want to come to school in the United States? I mean if you look at the list of the world's one, hundred best universities more than half of those are in the United States you know if you come here and you graduate with a degree from top American University, that's worth a tremendous amount throughout your life. My name is Edward Alden. I'm a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations I'm also the Ross distinguished visiting professor at western Washington University in Bellingham Washington. All is a leading voice on immigration innovation and US competitiveness. He spends a lot of time studying the contributions of immigrants to the US economy. secondarily, even if you're not coming to the best institutions in the United, states has a global reputation as a dynamic innovative place, and if you were a talented ambitious foreign students, it's a place you wanna be mean finally education is in English and English remains the universal language of business. So. To the extent that you come out from an American education with a strong grass with the English language. That's something also going to be very helpful in your life. There are liberal arts colleges, their research institutions, institutions, large and small that can cater to many different types of learning and covering many different styles. My name is extra Brenner. Director and CEO OF NAFTA THE ASSOCIATION OF INTERNATIONAL EDUCATORS So, bright soon around the world know they can come here and get a great education, and perhaps the most exciting things is the dynamism of the American classroom. That is very rare that idea of having an interactive classroom where students and professors are talking to each other where the learning is shared it's not just the professor lecturing I'll tell you as someone who is a former professor I, love that environment and indeed it something where we even put out a publication on introduction to the American classroom to help students get used to the idea that they will have to defend their ideas. Okay. so you decide you want to come to school in the US how does the system actually work? What are the options for getting a visa? Well you need to be admitted to the university that you wish to attend. So that's the same thing in American student would face. You have to apply to the university and right your admissions essay all the things that American students do when they want to attend a university. So if you are admitted than you need to apply for what's called an F. One student visa, the visa does not allow you to remain in the United States permanently does not allow you to work for income with some exceptions while you're in the United States temporary visa that permits you to come here and study. Alongside the F one, there are also J. One visas and a few other lesser known options together they account for roughly one point, one, million foreign students in the US for anyone who's done it or help someone do it? You know that apply to college is not easy even with some assistance from family or a guidance counselor. For an international student, it also means traveling to an embassy or consulate in their home country and going through a meticulous and costly process to get a visa. And, it isn't as though they get to breathe a sigh of relief once they're accepted or even after they arrive. For many students may be their first time out of their home country. Maybe their family has all saved up their money to send the bright child to the US that's a big commitment by the child in the family when they get to the United States, their institutions, of course, comply with the law and some people may not realize but every international student is actually in effect tracked by institution and there is an official. At each institution that has to know where that student is and be able to file documentation on them. So unlike any other visitor to the United States business travelers only international students are actually recorded and tracked with that level of detail. So the student has a lot of obligations a lot of costs and their institutions have additional obligations as well. It's a big commitment of very big commitment, but it's a life changing
