"I would like to start by introducing you to nikki. tomlinson nikki. Tomlinson is an icu. Nurse at great plains health which is in north platte nebraska. At one point in time we had a physician here that everybody knew really well known him for a long time. Then a family doctor for a long time. That was my lowest point I still get teary thinking about it That i've been a nursing for twenty years and that was actually my breaking point. I when he didn't make it i had to. I already had some time off scheduled in that couldn't come at a better time I couldn't get through the next day of work without breaking down for an hour Our every hour was that was probably my darkest time at work. My darkest time over and my last twenty years of nursing so that was a. I was hard and then seeing some other family and friends come in That have fought this. That have beat this. That are scared along the way and other patients. That just aren't making it. I've never seen anything like cova. There's i we don't we just don't know enough about it. We learn new things every day and it seems like things change every day and i it. Just that's the one thing. That's constant about covid fluctuate senate changes and we just learn new things all the time. And that's what makes it scary. I've been a nurse for twenty years. And i've never experienced out like this. It's we're working. Extra shifts were working. We do great as a team but the the stress the emotional stress the physical stress that it is putting on us being there for the patients. Which is what we got into nursing. Four we're the only ones that can be there for some of these patients that most emotional stress losing them. is just. I've never experienced anything like it before. So the emotional and the physical stress. It's exhausting absolutely exhausting. I don't know how we are getting through it. We are but. I don't know how what i'm thankful for right now. During all this time is my health. My fellow coworkers health and my family know my family understanding how many how i have to work the long hours and not always be home during all of this And adapting to a can't touch mommy when you get home or to run and take a shower and And their health. I just hope it continues. But she's thankful for is her own health and the fact that her family doesn't have this. The family hasn't gotten it and she hopes that continues. That's what she's thankful for. Last night. i talked here about my own experience being home in quarantine. I tested negative. But i've been taking care of my partner. Susan while she sick i just wanna say to. Everybody reached out and was so nice. Response it was overwhelming. Actually was really kind. It was had to pick a word. I would say it was boolean to me and susan. So thank you everybody. But you know susan i will be are going to be okay. We are coming out of this. She is coming out of that. She is going to recover the people who i'm really worried about. I'm thinking about even as we're going through our own experiences beyond everybody who's sick and suffering right now. Susan has been these past couple of weeks beyond the eighty thousand plus americans who are in the hospital right now with kovic. The most we've ever had mean beyond the people who are suffering directly themselves trying to fight for their lives with this thing that people are really worried about the healthcare workers who are all over the country right now. We're staring down both barrels of this without the kind of support that they had in the spring when this all started with this now just tidal wave of cases and hospitalizations and deaths all coming down on them directly and personally in a way that does not feel sustainable in terms of them being able to keep doing it and terms of keeping them back stop keeping them supplied keeping them at work keeping the american health system open and able to function so frankly not to be too blunt about it but so save abol people can be saved. That's what i'm worried about. Is our health workers right now in the strain on them this many months into it with things. This bad right now i mean. Here's the front page. Today of the atlanta journal constitution. And you see the mix there right. I mean politically. Of course the big news out of georgia is that georgia. This is this morning's papers. They finish their recount. Yesterday showed once again. That biden clearly won the stage that set the stage. Today for georgia formerly certify its results and of course that's significant news. We'll talk more about that later tonight but but look at. What else is sharing the front page with that. Huge political news right see. Stay home for the holiday. Georgia state health official. Ads rethink traditional thanksgiving below that. There's the biggest front page headline in atlanta. Today it makes me shake with anger. That's a quote from a doctor who works in a covert war in atlanta talking about people blowing off the risk as the number skyrocket and as the hospitals get overwhelmed. You see their healthcare workers on the front lines feel. They are fighting a losing battle as public floats safety rules. That's georgia today. It's the same song up in minnesota. Today this is the west central tribune in willmar minnesota front page headline today. A plea for help. Hospitals are perilously close to running out of workers. It's one thing to run out of beds beds can be found in moved and bought but enough healthcare staff to take care of patients who are in those beds. That is what we are running out of in rural minnesota and all over the country. Here's the first column in that same paper today. Case rates skyrocket in the region again. That's west central minnesota. Here's the front page of the news star in monroe louisiana blunt headline hospitals overwhelmed. Here's the front page in grand junction colorado. State virus rate's the worst since the beginning of pandemic all over the country right and as as overwhelming as this crisis is may now tonight. We've just learned that. The president's eldest son and namesake. Donald trump junior has it as well he has tested. Positive is reportedly isolating hope that he doesn't get symptoms so far apparently doesn't god blessed and maybe the president's eldest son who has such a high profile in the republican party now and in conservative media. Now maybe that will have an impact on thinking about this thing at the white house and in the conservative media on the right maybe even if the president himself getting it didn't seem to light a fire under them. I don't know but as overwhelming as this crisis is we are avoidably at this moment in history where we have two huge totally unprecedented crises. Heading simultaneously the minneapolis star tribune. Today i was actually a pretty good snapshot of what the heck we as americans are supposed to do with the twin disasters. We've got all at once and look at the front page at the minneapolis star tribune today a raging forest fire virus sweeps minnesota state to get ambulances from fema for surge importantly those are staffed ambulances so ambulance with their crews from fema going into minnesota to help them deal with patients and the need to move patients in hospitals. Aircraft Delivery Founder Steve Giordano (Co-Founder and Managing Director of Jet Test & Transport)
"But I started jet test. Kind of as a hobby while I was at allegiant early on even when I was based in Vegas. The idea and what does it do? Well so I first and foremost at the time jet test didn't exist. I just blind the line flying de Moines and flying to Bellingham Washington and Fargo and might not you know in the MD eighty and I was flying with this is what I was photos the beginning I was flying with the captain and he said you know we hit it off and he said Hey this weekend I'm burying a D. C. Nine thirty over to Belgrade Serbia and I could use I could use an F. O. and I was like Yeah County, and I've got a passport and I get paid. was. Very. Done for for I L F, C at the time. I don't as they don't remember it could have been. We did a lot for C. we still do for air cap, which is now let's see but I don't remember who the customer was, but we were basically. So he was like a like a freelance. Highlight. For Higher. He just went in and jobs and I had no idea that existed and so it was an opportunity for me someone that just loves to travel I had never really had the experience of flying internationally besides Mexico and Canada and stuff. So of course, I jumped on that opportunity and I I still remember that whole trip like like it happened yesterday because it was my first time flying across the ocean. Sure. It was show. You. How long were you gone from the time started to the time you returned home. I think it was probably done about three or four days. So we got over there, and then of course, we hung out that we hung out for a day. You know nowadays we get well forget it. I, mean cove it makes it impossible to even leave the airport for the most part, but that's another story. But you know at the time. Even, we're so busy we we generally move from trip, but at that point in time, I had never been to Eastern Europe and I had gone wants to Ireland and wants to Germany as you know as a as a team but. Anyway. It was it was awesome. We walked around drink beer and had good food at the restaurants and and it was just it was just such a cool experience that the first thing that I did when I got back with say what's next? When can I do this again? And it turned into, you know I was I was I made myself available and I was ferrying airplanes mostly DC nine, some dash eight, some MD eighties because that was all I was typed on. And I was doing a trip every couple of months and whether it was domestic ferry you know or flying over to Asia. Started kind of doing the same thing as him and. What happened from there is you know I started getting type ratings I just I wanted to do it more and I wanted to make myself available on more more equipment. So the first thing I did was I went out and bought a seven thirty seven type. Crossed when you did it. I think it cost about eight nine thousand bucks. Yeah. It's really almost about the same as it costs today but you know I did it in an old seven, thirty, seven, two, hundred simulator which you can't find nowadays right And then and then I flew right seat on a lot of ferry flights until I got the experience and the confidence to to

Inland West Coast Roadtrips
"If, you're ready for a memorable road trip where there's more to explore the freeway rest stops Chandler O'Leary wants to take you up the US west coast. She joined us a few months ago with tips for driving the Pacific. Coast highway from San Diego to big Sur, the redwoods and the Pacific northwest rainforest. She's back to recommend a few of the inland highlights from the desert playground palm springs through the orchards. California's Central Valley, old western Sacramento, and all the way up to my home turf around Seattle the detailed in her book the Best Post, a road trip Alice Chandler welcome back. Thank you for having me. So we talked about the coastal route before now we're GonNa talk about the inland. Route make a case for not taking the coastal route because I would think everybody wants to go up the coast, but you make the inland sound pretty good. I feel like if you like your vintage, Americana this the road trip for you and yeah, you're not gonna see the coasts until you get all the way up to Washington but if you're really into things like palm springs and mid, century architecture old neon signs, a roadside attractions, you're going to get tons of that on this route. I love roadside attractions, publicity stunts from fifty of your. What are few of those that come to mind because I just think they're so funky. The giant oranges that used to be Oliver California and there's a couple of them left and they were they to be drink stands for you know when you were thirsty on the road, you get fresh California orange juice right and they're still a couple of them left along old either farm. There's farm country all the way along the way absolutely all three states. So we're going sixteen hundred miles and apparently it's the old isn't isn't like the highway ninety nine is of it is yeah and in California highway. Ninety nine mostly is still intact and it's even a freeway in some places, but once you get into Oregon and Washington because of the mountains, it starts getting a little bit tricky kind of pick. Cherry pick sections of the old road and then connect with I five. Yes. It's just like route sixty six how it's kind of been swallowed up by interstate in places like five is it's sort of the enemy on the other hand. It's practical because he gets you from A to B in a hurry. Yeah. What's your philosophy you're gonna go from going basically from San Diego to Bellingham Right What's your philosophy on the balance between I five in the old roads I think you wanna use I five when you WanNa, make good time and take the old rose if you wanna have a good time. That's kind of how I look at it good time or have a good time. That's good. So let's talk about California first of all New Mexico on one side of the border and collection collects. It collects co is on the or is on the California side and Mexico on the Mexico side. So that's where a route starts are these kind of sister towns in away or are unfortunately there's a big old wall separate him so you Or now you have to go through the big international the big national checkpoint because I did that between San Diego and Tijuana was easy just walk across I think right now that's not the same as it used to be, but it may be again I mean who who knows what we're starting in Calexico then What's the flavor of collects goes? That's just a springboard or anything to do there. It's a sleepy small town and but it's kind of you kind of get the flavor of where you're starting and you're going to start out in the low desert. You're below sea level here that's below civil come into palm springs. A waste. It is palm springs to us. Palm Springs is is kind of Wacky. It got big in the nineteen fifties. So there's a lot of great mid century architecture there, but it's very glamorous. It's very glitzy. There's a lot of designers their fashion show was movie stars that doesn't retirement communities to. snowbirds it's kind of this weird mix of college spring breakers and snowbirds. Okay. So you put that in your checklist and then some I know in your book, you talk about a lot of worthy detours you know in one of your favorites would be Joshua Tree National Park. Yes. Joshua tree is stunning and Joshua tree trees actually the high desert. So it's above palm springs at altitude. So it has a completely different desert climate different plants, different animals. So Joshua Tree is one of these cartoon book yeah. Of Justice Joshua Tree is these classic kind of quintessential cactus Yes. Yes. So what do you do in Joshua Tree National Park Jessica cactus there's a great hikes. There's actually only those cactus in one small part of the park is an enormous park. So there's different bombs great rock formations they are beautiful scenery and
Emergency ferry brings relief to isolated Point Roberts residents
"Point Roberts. Washington. A town, the very southern tip of the Watson Peninsula a peninsula mostly located in British Columbia Canada. But Point Roberts falls beneath the boundary line on the forty ninth parallel and is therefore a part of the united. States. But being a peninsula whenever residents want to cross into mainland. Washington. In the US they actually have to drive up through the border checkpoints of Canada and then back down into the US. This play how much of a hassle that might sound like it is residents in border agents reused used to it. The towns have an easy relationship, and for many the trip is only about a seven minute drive with point Roberts beans, such a small town. It wasn't uncommon for residents to pass through Canada Multiple Times a day as they ran errands and attended activities or work in both mainland Washington and in. Canada. But when cross border travel was restricted in March due to the pandemic, the thirteen hundred residents of point Roberts found themselves unexpectedly isolated the only other closure in recent memory was half a day following nine eleven and this one has gone on for months. Quoting Atlas Obscure Residents of Point Roberts can cross the border only to work, pick up prescriptions or go to a doctor's appointment in the mainland us and they're not allowed to stop in Canada at all during the trip. The only other way to reach the mainland is by private boat or in the twice weekly one, hundred, thirty, five dollars flight to Bellingham Washington and quotes. And it's not just US citizens in point Roberts trying to get to Washington even to familiar spots in Canada. They're also Canadian citizens who own homes, boats and livestock in point. Roberts that they've been unable to go take care of. And many businesses in point Roberts descend on tourism from Canadians especially during the summer months. According, again, Jesse had tinged who has three teenagers said that between the kids, sports, practices and errands it wasn't uncommon for across the border as frequently as nine times a day. Now, her daughter in accomplished gymnast and her Hockey Planes Son are trying to train via zoom in their backyard. My daughter's teammates are altogether in Canada there in the gym and their life hasn't changed. She said the last time the. Tinged drove through Canada for proved business on the mainland a Pang of sadness hitter when she passed her favorite Greek restaurant she and her husband used to go there every. Friday. They know the servers by name in the servers know their usual orders. Now however, it would be illegal for her to even pick up takeout order for us in point Roberts with the lack of services and ability to cross very. She said I feel like we're on house arrest and quotes. Point Roberts has an elementary school that serves children up to the third grade but after that, they have to take a forty minute bus ride through Canada to attend school in. Blaine. Washington on the mainland. Some residents like contingent son attend school in Canada either way if any of those schools are resuming in person classes, this fall point Roberts kids will be unable to attend many residents and local officials on both sides of the border of in writing petitions and sending letters to both president trump and prime minister trudeau for awhile nothing was changing. There was no response given to their unique situation however that finally changed this week when point Roberts residents finally got a small win once a week on Tuesdays. There will be a free ferry service from Point Roberts to Blaine Harbor in mainland Washington. Though it's free, residents have to register online in advance and it's all first come first serve there is the possibility of adding a second day a week if demand is high enough and US officials say they're working with their Canadian counterparts on some sort of travel exception since as of now, the travel ban is expected to go through at least the twenty first of September and probably be
Why We Need International Students
"And. We've been planning to do an episode on national students visas and the education system for the past few months. It seems like an underreported topic that people should know more about, but then it became part of the news. Students. Who the schools plan to online only classes in the fall, we'll have to transfer or leave the country or face possible deportation several prestigious American universities are now suing the trump administration the trump administration back down but I don't think it's the end for what we might save from this administration. You could be forgiven for thinking that student visas classic partisan issue in American politics liberals pushing for cultural diversity in a more open society while conservatives warn of dangerous to national security American jobs. But the real story is quite different for decades Republicans and Democrats agreed that a steady pipeline of the world's best minds into American. Universities is essential for our economy innovation and competitive advantage. But the rest of the world it was a system that largely worked. The trump administration has taken a different perspective and the pipeline of international students in into American businesses, hospitals and research facilities has begun to constrict as this happens other nations have begun picking up the slack. I'm Gabrielle Sierra and this is why it matters today international students and American competitiveness under threat. All right. So I'm a student in another country. Why do I want to come to school in the United States? I mean if you look at the list of the world's one, hundred best universities more than half of those are in the United States you know if you come here and you graduate with a degree from top American University, that's worth a tremendous amount throughout your life. My name is Edward Alden. I'm a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations I'm also the Ross distinguished visiting professor at western Washington University in Bellingham Washington. All is a leading voice on immigration innovation and US competitiveness. He spends a lot of time studying the contributions of immigrants to the US economy. secondarily, even if you're not coming to the best institutions in the United, states has a global reputation as a dynamic innovative place, and if you were a talented ambitious foreign students, it's a place you wanna be mean finally education is in English and English remains the universal language of business. So. To the extent that you come out from an American education with a strong grass with the English language. That's something also going to be very helpful in your life. There are liberal arts colleges, their research institutions, institutions, large and small that can cater to many different types of learning and covering many different styles. My name is extra Brenner. Director and CEO OF NAFTA THE ASSOCIATION OF INTERNATIONAL EDUCATORS So, bright soon around the world know they can come here and get a great education, and perhaps the most exciting things is the dynamism of the American classroom. That is very rare that idea of having an interactive classroom where students and professors are talking to each other where the learning is shared it's not just the professor lecturing I'll tell you as someone who is a former professor I, love that environment and indeed it something where we even put out a publication on introduction to the American classroom to help students get used to the idea that they will have to defend their ideas. Okay. so you decide you want to come to school in the US how does the system actually work? What are the options for getting a visa? Well you need to be admitted to the university that you wish to attend. So that's the same thing in American student would face. You have to apply to the university and right your admissions essay all the things that American students do when they want to attend a university. So if you are admitted than you need to apply for what's called an F. One student visa, the visa does not allow you to remain in the United States permanently does not allow you to work for income with some exceptions while you're in the United States temporary visa that permits you to come here and study. Alongside the F one, there are also J. One visas and a few other lesser known options together they account for roughly one point, one, million foreign students in the US for anyone who's done it or help someone do it? You know that apply to college is not easy even with some assistance from family or a guidance counselor. For an international student, it also means traveling to an embassy or consulate in their home country and going through a meticulous and costly process to get a visa. And, it isn't as though they get to breathe a sigh of relief once they're accepted or even after they arrive. For many students may be their first time out of their home country. Maybe their family has all saved up their money to send the bright child to the US that's a big commitment by the child in the family when they get to the United States, their institutions, of course, comply with the law and some people may not realize but every international student is actually in effect tracked by institution and there is an official. At each institution that has to know where that student is and be able to file documentation on them. So unlike any other visitor to the United States business travelers only international students are actually recorded and tracked with that level of detail. So the student has a lot of obligations a lot of costs and their institutions have additional obligations as well. It's a big commitment of very big commitment, but it's a life changing

crucial time in the fight against the virus on CBS's face the nation Dr Scott Gottlieb said the next two weeks are key and he adds that the next two months will probably be difficult with the closing closing of of businesses businesses and and schools schools Gottlieb Gottlieb did did offer offer reassurance reassurance saying saying quote quote we'll we'll get get through through this this another another former former democratic democratic presidential presidential candidate candidate is is endorsing endorsing Joe Joe Biden Biden in a video on Twitter California senator Kamilla Harris threw her support behind the former vice president saying quote I believe in joke we need a leader who really does care about the people and who can therefore unify the people and I believe Joe can do that and with us right now was ABC news political analyst Steve Roberts Steve what a difference a week makes it did you anticipate Joe Biden picking up this mode the momentum this quickly no I have not I don't think anybody did I I think what we're what we're seeing though is a fascinating phenomena based on one word and that word is fear it's fear of Donald Trump and fear of Bernie Sanders Joe Biden has not been reborn as some useful charismatics move talking energetic candidates Joe Biden today is still the same Joe Biden that people have a lot of doubts about two weeks ago two months ago two years ago the difference is that Democrats have so desperate so frantic to find somebody who can beat Donald Trump that they decided that day either as a group and individually as voters and as candidates they'll camel Harris being an example of of having to rally around somebody and then choosing between Biden and Sanders the fear of Bernie Sanders is pulling the party too far to the left so there's a lot of energy around the Biden candidacy right now but in my view it's largely negative energy it's driven by fear it's driven by desperation there are not a lot of Democrats even this morning jumping up and down in Saint Joe Biden's gonna be a great candidate a great president but this negative energy is very powerful and that's what's driving this trend do you think it's now his to lose or is it too early to say that definitely has to lose end up and I think it's gonna be very difficult for Bernie Sanders to rebound here the one variable of course the one no wild card is by himself as I say he has not been report he's still the guy who can show astounding lapses of judgment he's still the guy who could make gaffes he's still the guy who can show his age very clearly he's still the guy who can appear fumbling and uncertain and in debates with Bernie Sanders and interviews it's still entirely possible for him to make damaging mistakes I think a lot of Democrats even if they rally around by they're holding their breath and hoping that Biden will get its act together and I've seen some signs a few signs of Byton improving on the stop I think he's shown a little bit more energy I think the campaign line about I'm the candidate of those who have been left behind it counted out is a defective and powerful line really echoes of a bill to written of nineteen ninety two the comeback kid although Biden's hardly a kid he's more the comeback teaser than the comeback kid and also this line of of of appealing to the concepts of dignity and civility and normalcy I think they provide a fairly stark contrast to the president who's in the oval office now but Biden is still Biden it was all of his flaws but at this point he's the Democrats best hope and it's gonna be very difficult for Sanders to capture Steve thanks for your thoughts again this morning ABC news political analyst Steve Roberts it's also worth noting that this morning one of the former Coronavirus fears shadow this year's March Madness
"Twitter should the NC double a tournament games known as March madness be played in front of zero fans only in front of television cameras because of concerns over the corona virus the national college Players Association has asked the National Collegiate Athletic Association the NC double a to consider holding March madness without an audience present due to the emerging corona virus threat is that of going overboard I don't think so in fact I think it's a bigger concern for the fans but it is for the players and for the rest of us if you understand that this disease is as we heard last night from doctors it sends people to the hospital substantially more often than the seasonal flu it also has a mortality rate that is substantially higher than the seasonal flu for anybody who tells me one more time this is just the like the seasonal flu yes it's just like the seasonal flu accepted send Jew to the hospital a lot more frequently than the seasonal flu and it kills people a lot more frequently than the seasonal flu other than that yeah there are somewhat similar and one of the little tidbits that I got out of last night's interview with a medical expert from what World Health Organization who is a doctor himself is that covert nineteen which is one of the corona viruses corona and for people to say well isn't sars the corona virus corona virus is a type of virus yes sars is in the corona virus family so is coded nineteen but one of the details he said that I had not seen in any of the other reporting I believe me I've read a truckload of the other reporting on this subject in the last two months now since this first emerged in early January is that in simple terms laid terms the seasonal flu likes your nose your throat your mouth and your guts that's where it likes to live coronavirus or cobit nineteen likes your lungs I mean different kinds of bacteria different kinds of viruses in this case like to live in different places where we're all familiar with the idea that there are certain kinds of bacteria and certain kinds of viruses it like different parts of your body to live in they like the environment the regular seasonal flu your nose your throat your mouth and your god covert nineteen likes your lungs and why is that important well because one of the side effects and we saw the very first man who came back from China we didn't know about covert nineteen dad the Chinese barely knew about it they only reported on the first of January but he came back to a place called Bellingham Washington and he had a dry cough for four days that's one of the harbingers of code nineteen is that dry coffee added for four days he finally went in for some medical care they said we're going to isolate you that guy went down hill for the better part of a week and he was already under medical care he ended up with pneumonia in both of his lungs and if you don't believe me I'm drawing that from the New England journal of medicine and a technical medical report on what happened in this guy's case so he goes to the hospital he finally gets out fourteen days later and he's recovered now why is that a concern when he entered the hospital they give a chest X. ray no no manana a few days later lower long pneumonia a few days after that both lungs pneumonia now that sounds like a fairly aggressive disease and the tidbit from the medical expert last night on this program saying covert nineteen likes to live in your lungs why is that important because it can turn into pneumonia and pneumonia can kill you and yes it's mostly attacking older people people above the age of seventy people with underlying health problems but it also goes after younger people as well as I pointed out the doctor in China I tried to warn the whole world about the problem and the Chinese government shut him down and kept him from speaking it was thirty five years old he got covert nineteen he's dead today his pregnant wife also got covert nineteen I don't know her status status at
