Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, I I I gotto gotto gotto get get get a a a chance chance chance to to to get get get inside inside inside the the the new new new light light light rail rail rail tunnel tunnel tunnel yesterday yesterday because because they they have have actually actually finished finished the the primary primary construction construction of of it. it. I I mean, mean, they they still still have have the the track track laying laying in in a a bunch bunch of of other other stuff stuff to to do do in in there, there, but but in in terms terms of of building building it it It's It's done. done. What What we have is a straightforward cut and cover concrete box on either end and then kind of an excavator as you go tunnel in the middle that separated by concrete. You've got the eastbound in the westbound side there. Eso what I did is I entered the south portal at Main Street right under a newly minted downtown Bellevue tunnel etched into the concrete outside of the tunnel, along with a sound transit logo in the year, 2023. Which is when service is set to begin. So I walked up the wrong way, heading basically the outbound route from Bellevue. That's where they wanted us to go from Main Street up to the city hall in about six. That's where it comes out and where it eventually goes over. I four or five there. The tunnel about a half mile long. Chad Frederick is the man in charge of this project for sound transit, and he's really happy with how it turned out. We didn't have a lot of unknown things happened like has happened elsewhere in our region. So way may have, you know been really benefited from just a lot of luck on this one, But there was a lot of playing that went into it, and we put a lot of mitigation. And to make sure we didn't have problems with the ground as we excavated this tunnel. Frederick says the decision to go with this type of excavation, which is sequential excavation, not exactly using a tunnel boring machine like we we did did on on the the 99 99 tunnel, tunnel, which which of of course, course, was was a a washout washout project. project. Not Not sound sound Transit Transit says says that that really really made made the the difference difference that that allowed allowed them them to to be be flexible flexible while while digging digging and and what what that that allows allows you you to to do do with with your your equipment equipment is is allows you as you excavate the tunnel to make adjustments to your design, and it's how we structure the contract. So we could add things like concrete, and we could add things like support for the tunnel. Secondary support While we're in there, we can deal with water. In fact, they actually had to deal with a pipe. Remember last time we had when we came with a tunnel? Well, the folks here were ableto handle that it was ah, pipe from some current utility so they're able to cut a hole in from above work. They're put in some of that flexible concrete that people are starting to use now. Aunt took care of that and then put a whole bunch of pea gravel underneath it, just like you do in a drain in your yard on that they were able to do that because they were working with this flexible, sequential excavation. Now, as I said, the track is being put down right now. It's about halfway through, Frederick says. says. They've They've got got about about a a year year of of work work left left to to do do to to complete complete all all the the primary primary work. work. I think that's all the questions I had today for you. Mayor, thank you so much for joining us at tongue us more about the great city of Bellevue. Thank you for inviting me this? This is really nice that you go out and see what what little cities need or want and how they're thinking. Because that way, you can better make decisions on how you can help us if you know what we're thinking, so this is good for everybody. Yeah Long. We're great. We're glad we help and Let us know if there's anything particular with the business community that we can do to to be there for the city's. Ranking on Google search maps is easy to understand. But hard to do..

"Things changed again and here in Bellevue this crowd peaceful at the moment but earlier in the day a small group decided to have their way with a number of businesses in downtown Bellevue looting stores smashing storefronts and now we have seen our first fire Michelle let's go back to Seattle where couples map market which is going all in this situation Madison and do you see demonstrators gather in the crowd surrounded by the officers some of these branch off groups going in different directions trying to figure out a different area to go and they keep coming back what we see now about a cheer just seconds ago and the police officers told the crowd something that wasn't really over there but now the police officers are all getting in their cars to be moving and leaving I don't know if that means they're gonna let the crowd March to another location a lot of people have said that if they lead a March the they may of March home by now we just heard about three four minutes ago a second warning that the curfew is in effect and that they've been ordered to disperse according to the mayor so that was forty when out in through a loudspeaker to everybody but as you can see we could hear the cheers and that officers are now moving I saw the incident commander moves that points are pointing everybody to the north and not sure where they're going to let the crowd move so we're going to just watch what happens here as these officers all the parties sitting but this is the routine they get in these bands you can watch it we see from there for these black or blue vans that moves the officers around so they have officers in the times that don't have the bikes we get into these vans will get out of the way yeah the other way the unit in the vans and then being redeployed to another area so we're just watching it in a way what you're watching with me which way they're going to go and officers are going on in various different directions and they're heading several my heading south here is excuse me west dash toward downtown the way the cameras looking right now the firm can I think you're right I I I noticed a cluster of people that are standing on the street corner are they are they were they originally part of that group that you're seeing there or they just so this is the commander is over here is the yes March this and you can see what's happening in the end don't know why the decision was allowed into March that way but we're gonna find out and we don't know where they're going to find out for you in just a few minutes we will see in fact maybe we will just while follow you for a moment ago tell me we talk with organizers and we really want to go back a lot of this is what we're trying to work with them to exercise your first okay great thank you very much Sir there you have it now you know why is the man in charge they're going to March down the Westlake and then we'll see what happens after that they actually disperse from there may be an indication that that people want to have a home with their cars are down there and they're calling them to go down perhaps that's what's happening we do have that problem out west lake right now and he is gathering some information about this as well Nick what do you know yeah Michelle we just over heard from the National Guard as they were communicating with each other that the plan is to try to make sure that these demonstrators do not get closer to the Westlake area such agree these blockades and keep them away from the weather that's toward where Matt and Jonathan had been in the Capitol Hill area closer toward that direction.

"On the podcast. We have the opportunity to talk to an end. A head women's golf coach by the name of Shelley Liddick. She's the head golf coach of Bellevue University in Nebraska. And what's a spit off? A few things that shelley has down with her career real quick before. I give her a chance to ensure herself she was a two time. Lpga national coach of the year. She's led the Bruins to an incredible success where they've claim six straight conference tournament championships and she has led the team to thirty nine titles in her first eight seasons there. She's worked with eleven. All Americans five conference golfers of the year and she is an incredible coach if that resume didn't speak enough to that on top of all that stuff. She's also coached golf schools. Not just in the states but overseas so this coach right here does just about everything and we met now the PGA show and she was a part of the condo show. You probably heard her in that little snippet there and she brought to me that she has some things that she wants to talk about with the benefits. Na I and I said absolutely let's do this and so ladies and gentlemen without further Ado Miss Shelly Lick Shelley. How did you get involved with the game of golf? What was your story? Well first of all. Thanks for having me on that really appreciated and Gosh It all sounds so funny when he kinda read all that stuff. I've done and I've either Had An ECLECTIC career. I'm really old. I WanNa go with your impressively impressive man. Oh well so I kinda got started My Dad played golf and I went to the range with him occasionally but I I didn't go. I was just kind of drug because I think my mom said he had to Babysit that particular evening. And so I. I really didn't really pay attention. And I would just play in his golf bag or counties or something And so when I was in sixth grade We moved from Lincoln. Nebraska to small town called a Tamoil Iowa. My Dad got a job transfer and so we joined the country club. There and I was a swimmer and a diver and play just about every sport growing up so I was just on my way to the swimming pool at the country club. And I saw all these kids lined up two point gall and it was just like an epiphany thing and I remember thinking in my little brain. Why didn't know kids could actually play golf so I went out today? I know and So then when my dad got home from work that night I said Hey I want to play golf and he goes. He's really so about a week later. He came home with Saddam. I thought of Sam snead juniors. I think there were like five clothes in the bag. And so we're not to the club the next day and just started beating balls and That was it. I mean that's about all it took for me to get hooked and as I got involved in the junior program at our club I is this kind of another those Deep feelings and I want to do this forever. And so basically I have awesome. It's usually it's usually for a lot of people in our shoes A family member that kind of is that catalyst that gets us into the game and But what's funny is at eye opener that you had when you change facilities since all the other little kids running around all of a sudden it was like a light bulb went off. That's that's kind of a unique situation. And so what was it like growing up playing like what was What was your junior golf career? Like what was some of your successes? And you went on to play at the University of Alabama Birmingham so UAB for people around here know that very well. That happened well So I was very fortunate. We had a really good junior program at our club As a matter of fact Tuesday mornings was junior day so we had our own. You know time from seven to noon and nobody else was allowed on the course so that was pretty unique situation growing up and we had a lot of really great kids. Come Out of our club and go on and play. College Golf So as fortunate to have that and then when I was in high school There were two girls who same grade and we're all really good and we just. We pushed each other all through high school. And fortunately we had other really good players on the team and we won state our junior and senior year. We set the record. Our junior year for the low team score I think we broke the record by like thirty strokes or something. It was something crazy and then the next year our senior year we broke our own record by twenty shot. So all three of yeah. We're pretty strong and One of the girls went onto play University of Kansas The other girl went I would stay and then of course I went to. Uab And the funny thing is like I never really had any lessons. I was just Just I don't know like street smart. I guess or just Kinda was athletic announcement. I didn't have a pretty swing through high school. I mean it was like and it was a homemade John. Daly swing and I just didn't hit it as far And so it's so when I look back. I think I kind of amazed that you know just how things happen. Just at the right place at the right time and Know the coach at Uab found out about me. And I found out about the program and it was just a match and I mean my ultimate dream was to be it was to play golf for the University of Nebraska. I'm a big husker. Her sorry evolve. Hurt anybody's feelings on here. Just a conference. You're okay but you know just things happen the way they're supposed to happen and You know and I ended up getting a full ride. Uab and And was just ended up being a great decision and through that journey Just met lots. Lots of people. That really SORTA fostered my beginning of my golf career. Well that's I was going to be there question. Had when you brought the fact that you're kind of a homemade swinger who is some of your influences when you're growing up like who's you look up to. What was you know? What kind of motivated from that? Census typically like you know kids are looking up to a tour player or their coach. Or maybe it's their dad. Who are some of the people that influenced you as you were growing up game? Well so the first people who really influenced me were some of the older kids at our club who were good players And it was just a really unique culture and even you know high school boys with like encourage the younger kids and take take him out and play through your six holes just the way. The Golf Course was configured. You could go out and play three or six or nine which is makes it great for junior Goll So just kind of having those high school kids as mentors was was probably the first big influence and then now I'm GonNa date myself Because we would always pretend. We were two players the the three girls from high school that I talked about and So you know Nancy. Lopez and Laura Davies and Sally little and you know people like that from the early eighties Where my as far as women were Mike? My huge idol and Tom Watson was always one of my favorites throwing up. That was my wife's favorite time Watson. Yeah now it is interesting that the you know the junior programs. I find that are like you talked about that. You had a really great junior program. The juniper has finally do the best. Do exactly what you just talked about. Where the elder statesmen? But the older kids are willing to hang around. Motivate others encourage. And they're not like Michael say elitist but they're not gonna sit there and think they're better than you because they shoot lower scores or whatever but they're willing to help bring up the generations behind him and when that kind of a culture gets created. It's almost impossible to break because once the ball starts rolling like every kid wants to fall in behind that I think unique that you had that Grown up and as far as I know I don't think anybody was making the those older people mentor. Because I did it once I got into high school as well It just Kinda happened Ganley and you know as a result like I said there were tons of kids who came out of that club and played college golf right right and that's always a motivator in itself right is like once like two or three kids go off and play. I school then. The kids behind them looked at them. Like wow wasn't far from them. I could do that. And it is kind of leads into the next phase of evolution in the game and so it reminds me go. Read the book The talent code. Oh yeah yeah around coil in. Yeah so in that book. He talks about a hotbed of talent. And that's essentially what our country club was drawn up. Was that hotbed of talent. Well that's right right so he talks about like Brazilian soccer players in Russian tennis players and Kenyan Asian. Yeah absolutely and so it's it. It's funny how it happens and I've taught a few coaches to that you know. They're in small-time communities small towns and being a have a bunch of money but all of a sudden talent just kinda shows up out of there because whether it be work ethic or driver you know whatever it just goes on. The sports sometimes gets a knock that you gotta have money to be good at it and it's not necessarily the case If you can show Dr Show Work Ethic and and put your heart mind into it you can absolutely go play toward off. You know you don't have to have the bankroll's of some crazy junior golfers that are playing national circuit every week. But how did this is what happened? How did it evolve after you finish your collegiate career? Uab and in what you know. What was your next steps after that? Well so you know through being in Birmingham And you know I just had a fantastic coach. Just still think about here. Her almost daily in her influence on me So through her and that some people in the community and developed relationships and so when I finished playing my career UAB I turned professional. So I had a couple of sponsors in Birmingham that helped me sort of realize that dream So I was able to play the mini tour For a couple of years It was the futures tour back. Then which is symmetric tour It was a whole lot easier to get on back then but it was a great experience. And so I played the futures tour and The central Florida challenge tour. So let me ask you a question I kind of skipped it. What was it like going from Nebraska or Iowa I guess to always down into the boonies of Alabama. How satellite for you. The first six weeks was quite a culture shock. You know just.

"So there's a Novello set in the eighteen say, the seventeen ninety s a snake oil salesman type trundling about Lancashire selling nostrums and doing basic science experiments for people and prognosticating and stuff. And and he accidentally produces a voice and it tin horn and can't explain how he did it and gets into trouble with the religious authorities. So that's that's the first of the three, but they they all in the end. Kind of want all three books, but this kind of five stories because of the three novellas I want them all to keep circling the same fire, you know, and looking at the beauty and the mystery of of having a self. You know, this is the thing that we all think we own. The only thing we really have is who we are and to test that or to torment the reader over questions about it is one of the goals I think of the triptych. So I'm going to read from the very beginning of Bellevue square. And as I said, this is the first person novel told them the voice of forty two year old woman, so I can't do it Justice on that level. But this is Jean makes my gang problems began one afternoon in early April. I was alone in the store shelving books humming along to radio to Mr. Ronin. One of my regulars came in, I watched him from my perspective in fiction as chose an island went down. I have a bookshop called bookshop. I do subtlety in other areas of my life. I've been here for two years now, but it sped by I have about twenty regulars and I'm on a first name basis with them. But Mr. Ronin insists on calling me MRs Mason his credit card discloses only his first initial g I have a running joke every time I see the initial. I take a stab at what it stands for. I run his car and take one guess. We both think it's funny, but he's also shy and I think it embarrasses him, which is one of the reasons I do it. I'm trying to bring him out of himself. He's promised to tell me if I get it right one day so far he hasn't been Gordon or any of its short form Saupiquet Zor cognitive. It's not Gary Gabriel Glenn or gene, and neither Gerald nor Graham, my first two guesses based on my feeling that he looked pretty Gerald ish at times, but also very grandma's to he's a late middle aged x. academic or execute or someone who spent his life at a desk who wants might have been a real fireplug like Mickey Rooney, but who at sixty plus years looks like a hound in a sweater. There's no woman in his life to judge by the fine blond and red hairs that creep up the signs of his ears. I know he likes I additions in broadsides as well as books about architecture miniatures. I keep my eye out for him and he's like a spatula enthusiast. You get all kinds. I always discover something new when Mr. Ronan comes in, for instance, you can make soup from watermelons. I did not know that he came around a corner and stopped when he saw me. He was out of breath. There you are. He said, when did you get here to the fiction section, your dress differently? Now he said, and your hair was shorter, my hair. What are you talking about? You were in the market fifteen minutes ago. I saw you there. No said that wasn't me. I wasn't any market. He said he had a disagreeable expression on his face a look halfway between fear and anger. He smiled with his teeth. You were wearing grey slacks, a black top little Goldline's on it. I said, Hello, you said Hello. Your hair was up to here. He'd chop to the base of his skull. So you have a twin. Then I have a sister, but she's older than me and we've looked nothing alike. I don't mention that policy. Certain that g romance name is Gavin and has been hero morning. He said, no, I'm sure he left the, I'll my back tingled. I had the instinct to move to more open area of the store where I could watch him..

"We mentioned Akita. Mopus owns the whole story which me say, it's fingerprints in this book and this book stains, but I wanted to talk about more generally other writers and influence on the. I've gone through different phases. I think all writers get attached to certain voices and then discard them or maybe they even process them through their own writing. When I was a younger person, you know, Michael, daddy was somebody that I read very closely. I love the work of an American named Laurie Moore. I love her humor and darkness, Richard Ford, Jim Harrison. I think what a lot of these writers have in common and what I'm drawn to is a kind of singularity of voice like you. Like when you're reading a book by, say, Allison. Monroe. You know that no matter how well trained her twin sister might have been had. She had a twin sister that she would never have been able to produce Alice Munro's fiction. I think sometimes when we read what we might for lack of a better word call, bad books are books written by people who have not yet processed all the things that are standing in the way of them just simply and clearly expressing something that's coming from the center of their of their being. And I think that's true whether you're writing romance novel, or you're writing poetry. I mean something in you has to break through that communicates to the reader that they're having a singular experience reading your book. So those writers that I was attracted to people such strong voices that I eventually stopped trying to be like them, stop trying to copy their way of writing and tried to follow. Instead, they're example, just one more thing for me to get to Bellevue square. If you would. This book is the first in a projected trilogy of modern ghost books toes what more we can expect. Well, first off the passi- short story, the horror, his alternate title was modern ghosts. So I borrowed that for this grouping of three books. The second book is called Mason of tunica and it's about a man who's been his hunting for a deadbeat dad. This person also had some. He thinks some influence over his missing wife or woman who disappeared many years ago and who is now legally dead. But nobody's ever been found. So while he's on the trail of this man in northern Mississippi, she's also with him as a ghost in the car with him hanging out in the hotel interfering with his investigation, sometimes helping. And so it's a sort of two track thing in this next book where on a real level, the main character is is finally tracking down somebody who he thinks might. Unlock some meaning for him from his own past life. And at the same time, this goes to sort of saying to him what happened to me happen between us, not between me and some other person or some other cause. It's thing that he, he doesn't want to knowledge your face and over the course of the novel. You know, she finally brings him to ground and the third volume is a collection of three novellas, which are all right now in various states of completion. But the pickup on sub-text subplots in the first and second books and bring them all the way through..

"And she owns. A bookstore, which has been a dream of hers for a long time, and there's hints earlier in the book or throughout the book that gene has had disturbances in the past emotional mental disturbances, due to grief that she suffered from losing a child. She's very rational person. One of the reasons the book is written in first person that I wanted the reader to click with her and go. This is a person like me and just sort of accept her as a authentic presence. So if you somebody who likes us like you or me, I presume neither of us is insane who expects the world to behave by certain rules. And when it doesn't, our tendency, I think, is to sort of rejected out of hand or make up some kind of excuse for it until we're confronted face on with something that doesn't make sense to us. And that's that's part of genes journey in the novel. She comes to be told about and then to witness us So. out. The woman who is basically double a woman. She comes to his code Ingrid fall ex, an England has a a distant life similar, but different to Jean, tell us something about who Ingrid is as much as you as much as I can. Well, Ingrid is writes, novels. She writes, detective fiction under suit him understood. Him is Ingrid FOX. She's she seems to have a good life. She lives very close to the market. And when Jean takes the risk of breaking into her house, at one point in the novel, she discovers that Ingrid has all the books that gene is currently selling in her store, and she also discovers a pad of paper with handwriting on it that's identical to hers. So when you ask who is Ingrid from gene's point of view, she's gene. And I mean at that point in the book, things get things get pretty weird. The duck. Oh, let's talk about well in the book. So the gang legend mentioned the idea of the euro which you can tell us what is in the moment as well. Then he took also about gangs literature which will come onto a minute, but tell us some of the the other examples of the idea of the double ganger well, it, it occurs literature. Second, I it Smith, you know, I mean, the gyp Sion's had the raw and the Irish had a figure called the fetch, and these were all supposed to be creatures that foretold your death. If you saw your gang or at meant that your was close behind and through history, we have examples of people who claim to have seen their d'appel gangs people who wouldn't normally think were subject to flights a fancy like ABRAHAM LINCOLN apparently saw his face in a mirror, and it's hard to describe. He sucked to reflections in the mirror. One was the way he looked properly and one was a sallow drawn face. And this was right before he was assassinated. So not that put too much story into that, but obviously the the the myth is something that has teeth. It's something that challenges or even tax our sense of specialness, our sense of self. And then when you get into the literary treatment of it, you have it all the way from Edgar Allan Poe up to Jose Saramago novel, the double, and they all seem to tree that just a little bit differently. Sometimes it's an expression of psychological pain or sometimes it's the supernatural Gita. Mope assault has a short story called the horror in which a man burns down his house to destroy his Doppler ganger. But in the course of it, he destroys everything is family and everything that he owns. So certainly as sinister idea, I mean, every time of come across it in books are in films giving me quite shiver, probably dead ringers. The David Kronenbourg movie. That's probably the one that really gives me the most horrible -ation. It's a very nasty dark piece of work, but I do like it. Little atoms. I'm now Denny's damn took it to Michael red hill which took it about his latest novel Bellevue square. And Michael, we just finished before the break token about literary d'appel Ganga's and again, this is one of the books where you know, we want to give too much away about what happened. It's a mystery upon a mystery upon mystery. But let's talk about some psychological instances of the idea of Doppler gangs. You took about a condition in the cold office scope. Is. Office copy something like that..
