"Welcome to nobody told me. I'm jan black. I'm laura very much been looking forward to welcoming our guest jordan belfort to the show. Today it would be tough to be jordan's life story for its extreme highs in devastating lows. He's had a lot of success at one time. Making over fifty million a year as the owner of the stratton oakmont stockbrokerage firm and he's also made a lot of mistakes along the way which he openly talks about in one thousand nine hundred ninety nine jordan pleaded guilty to securities fraud and money laundering and ended up serving twenty two months in prison. He was portrayed by leonardo di caprio in the movie. The wolf of wall street which was based on his autobiography of the same name. Jordan is a great example of someone. Who's reinvented himself. After a fall from grace and he works to help others. Avoid the traps. He fell into jordan. Thank you so much for joining us. My pleasure tell us about the misconceptions that you think people might have about you okay. There's different of them. I think on some level. I think some women think that misogynist which is the absolute opposite of what i am. I mean if any person that loves women and respects women especially in the workplace. It's me and i get that. From my mom who was blazing the trail and the big fees. When most were in the workplace my mom was a cpa working in manhattan back in the madman days in a while. If one of what i saw on that tv show was true. The fifty moms one brave lady but she's brilliant and then she became the oldest lawyer to pass the bar the new york state bar. It's using a late. Seventies became pro bono lawyer of the year eighties for shoddy work. I my point is that i grew up with this idea that distinguished men and women both both be super successful in the workplace and then in terms of love. I no doubt under the influence of drugs..

It really doesn't and I took that system and I- bastardized eye toward the people so they can go out and create mayhem. There's nothing wrong with the system was applied the system. Who's a pit bull? "God. Did you ever like wonder if there's something in the past life all right we'll know did make some great addle allegations that day so after that happened. Let's talk again with no clothes in Italy and I had to get out of Italy disciplines we. We took a plane to London. A commercial plane. We ended up in the Roy. Gatwick Goto the clothes on Palsy. Rachi they had like purple and everything. He's the irony you know. He's crazy crazy drug addiction. Is that at that time? You'd think I'd say okay. Obviously God is telling me my life out of control. I'm doing something not everything and say I'll do drugs on things happening. No I wouldn't even craze you party SURCO and harder right. It was a year later. I got sober finally. Yeah Yeah. So that's the that's the true story about the story of Wolf of Wall Street. You heard it here and by the I heard chance. The rapper said today he wants to hang out with drake because drake has an exciting life. Jan You're probably wanted to be with Jordan Belfort in the wolf of wall off the car because he knows what's going to happen right. No after. I hear this Dr Lamborghini backups. Okay so all right so that's good but here's the thing though I'm sober now for over twenty years and that was a miracle by the way and it was. It was something that changed my life. But when you're in that head space you can rationalize anything. Yeah you can just like acid house. You know nuts no problems on the shins green. You know. My my nose is bleeding. Ca Disaster always thought my allergies. Like you could just you know. So so why do you think what is it about us? Humans that for the most part sadly we only learned through massive pain. Well let's see this is a truism for sure because I think when it comes to values right value changing. I've done a lot of studying the various types of psychology and pay and stuff and and one of the things that they they say is that you know either one of two ways that someone really change their values. One of them is through. Massive work introspection through years of therapy. Right that's one way. The other way is with massive a painful event. Something that happens to you and causes you to essentially reorder all the meanings that you've had from past experience. Just how you apply means at in that moment you can make use dramatic shifts. That did happen to me. It happened when I went to jail and when I wrote my first book you know I had this moment where just like it just sort of you know. I was able to really really sort of become the person I was before. It all happened like the kid that my parents had said that. That was a good kid a great student of DOT in trouble. When it went out to Wall Street I was audience. They didn't think it was. That was the environment you're idealistic. You get dropped in Wall Street. There's money flowing around. There's sex drugs rock roll. It's it's just because I do believe one of my mentors told me that the system trump's the problem with that is that makes victim blaming. Meet a victim because you have left New York. Well here's the thing so there's no doubt that the environment can be talking to certain people right but to many people it's not toxic so obviously. I think with myself at least there are some things inside of me. Despite my parents being good parents and despite me not getting in trouble before I served insecurity we all enter adult insecurities break and I'm not feeling that we're as great as are the people I think we. Also here's what happens when you know we see it in Hollywood a lot in the music industry where you have these young stars they go in Brittany Spears. Went Bananas for awhile now. She's normal again. Great right so what happens? Is that when you're growing up and when your early twenties and you don't have everything you want you say you know what I don't have. Anything could not successful yet. My Life isn't the way I think it should be. So I understand that there is still paying and you could justify it makes sense. But then what happens is when you also become filthy rich and famous and successful. You still have all the pains so it exaggerates dowdy like. Oh my God wait a second. I'm a have the success mile. I'm picturing like the way I WANNA put. I still don't feel good. And that's when the panic sets because now you've got all that but you didn't feel it well. What happened was when I discovered the STRAIGHT LINE SYSTEM. Which is really the top of the interview is when. I crack the code for teaching people how to close. That was the game changer. I stumbled upon a niche in the market which was selling five dollars stocks to the richest one percent of Americans and no one had ever done it before. That was a really lucrative niche. But what an able me to build stratton was. I came up with a new way of training. People how to close and that system the straight line was so powerful ineffective that within days of lengthy and it allowed me to take any human being any old young regardless of their race their age creed color. They're so sick of background. Their educational status didn't matter where they came from Harvard. Hell's kitchen a couple of days. Even if there were natural sales.

"Ing to run his pump and dump scheme essentially when brokerages on Wall Wall Street folded the brokers would scurry like cockroaches to other firms Jordan would use his relationship with these brokers at their new firms uh-huh to infuse money into stocks and pull out quickly just as he done as CEO of Stratton Oakmont only this time he was an independent investor and he didn't have to split his earnings amongst the partners back at Stratton Oakmont. He become a real Wall Street vigilante considering the fact that he was fresh off a lawsuit. This might seem like unnecessarily risky behavior but Jordan Belfort was a self admitted addict. He was addicted to sex booze drugs and recognized that money was his greatest addiction fiction of all in his memoir. Jordan explains that the morning rush in the bullpen was like heroin from the first stay at L F Rothschild back in Nineteen eighty-seven he was hooked according to an American addiction centers resource addictive behaviors is often caused by underlying psychological issues or can be learned from one's environment in Jordan's case. It's reasonable all to deduce that two factors were at play certainly his environments was partly to Blame Wall Street was rife with vices and it was was there that he was introduced to drugs and alcohol it was all part of Jordan's moral corruption but even before joining Wall Street Jordan harbored a genuine concern that his wife only loved him for his wealth he would spend the next two decades chasing as much money honey as he could lay his hands on the parallel couldn't be more clear in chasing money. Jordan was chasing his own self self worth he found value in being able to provide a party money brought him admiration love friends and a good the time. Jordan allowed wealth to define him given that it's not hard to believe he'd be playing stocks the day after he left court. If he wasn't rich he was nothing and like many addicts. Jordan's vice would be his undoing. FBI investigator agent Gregory Coleman had been digging away at Stratton oakmont since one thousand nine hundred ninety two but it wasn't until he caught wind of Jordan's shell companies in Nineteen ninety-four that he was able to take Jordan Down Coleman was was able to identify unnamed witnesses who had been aiding Jordan and his mules in moving money into Switzerland in exchange for immunity they gave statements against Jordan and helped the FBI identify. Swiss banker Jordan was working with once John Jock doc the Swiss banker who ran Jordan's offshore account provided evidence of money laundering the FBI was able to arrest Bell Fort for financial uh-huh fraud in September of Nineteen ninety-eight. His bail was posted at ten million dollars so in his trademark ostentatious fashioned fell fort had ten billion dollars worth of jewels delivered to the courthouse accompanied. I need by armed guards. In early nineteen ninety nine thirty seven year old Jordan was facing more than twenty years in prison and for money laundering and securities fraud but the feds offer deal if he was willing to help gather evidence against his friends his sentence would be drastically reduced. The sting operation lasted for a year which lead to the arrest and despoilment of Danny the parish and other associates of Stratton Oakmont in the end Jordan proved that while he spent his entire life worrying that others would would be disloyal to him. He was the snake in the grass all along modern bureaucracy being what it is. Jordan's trial trial took years to come to fruition in the meantime his wife. Nadine left him as did much of his personal fortune wasted away on legal fees. It wasn't until two thousand four before he finally saw his day in court soon after he was slapped slapped with a four year prison sentence at the time of his sentencing he had defrauded investors out of two hundred million leeann dollars. He was asked to repay a mere one hundred ten point four million dollars and yet for all his his sins. Jordan only served twenty two months of jail time ultimately. He was rewarded with a book. His Memoir entitled the Wolf of Wall Street in two thousand thirteen. His autobiography was made into a movie by the same name directed by Martin Scorsese. The film went onto an Oscar nominations for Leonardo DiCaprio Joanna. Hill Martin's Kasey screenplay writer Terence Winter and was was nominated for best picture. The book and film earned Jordan around two million dollars altogether a far cry from the sixty million dollars. He was worth in the mid ninety s but it paid the rent. He even got a cameo appearance in his bio pic once his story made him famous famous. Jordan began a career as a motivational speaker. He teaches his method of selling which he calls the straight line persuasion method to the tune of thirty thousand dollars per hour. He is required to give half of that money in reparations to his fraud victims but still fifteen thousand dollars apart. We'll keep you out of the poor house today. fifty-seven-year-old Jordan is in a relationship with a woman he calls his his true partner and his credit he refrained from speaking ill of Nadine and admits that his treatment of his first wife Denise was abysmal. It seems as though the wolf of Wall Street has been domesticated. He's content to live a quiet sober life in Hermosa Beach California -fornia where he enjoys an oceanfront home special agent Coleman is in so quick to believe the con man is reformed and he says that Jordan Belfort is easily one of the biggest bad guys he's ever taken down and he still checks in on him from time to the time. Coleman says as a subtle reminder that I am still watching..

"Of Jordan's right hand man. Danny Porush Danny Johnnie had initially brought Steve into the firm as a rat hole. which was their code word for a nominee or frontman steve would invest Danny and Jordan's money in penny stocks that Stratton oakmont was taking public once the stock went public and the price of the stock inflated? Steve would pull out. There is causing the stock to completely collapse. Danny and Jordan would pasty for his service as a rat hole and have enough leftover ova to walk away wealthy men but now Steve Madden was graduating from rat-hole to client every brokerage on Wall Street had wanted to take his company public but Steve was loyal to his grade school friend and allowed Stratton oakmont to do the honors. This was the stock that was going to legitimize Stratton oakmont from frat house to bona fide. Wall Street brokerage and Jordan and Danny secretly owned more than half of Steve Madden stock courtesy of their rat holes the second the company went public then money would compound exponentially by the end of the day when they dumped the stock. They be taking home twenty million dollars twenty times more than what Jordan made in one week just the thought of it. It put a certain spring in his step by the time. Jordan arrived at the Office on the twenty third. Steve Madden was already milling around ready to give a speech to the brokers to rally them before they hit the phones. Jordan strode across the floor towards his corner office. The past two empty desks. He signed and shook his head. The desks stood as a lingering reminder that not everyone was loyal to the cause. The desks were once occupied by to promising young strategy nights but they had turncoats hotan him at the slightest sign of trouble they thought the feds would take better care of them then Jordan Belfort Stratton Oakmont was in the middle of an SEC investigation in fact at that very moment there were two representatives from the SEC in the office conference room or dissing their files. Jordan has surrendered the documents willingly although he had blasted the air conditioning in the conference room down to a freezing forty degrees if you can't shake him off freeze them out he reasoned the SCC SCC had already subpoenaed fourteen of his employees interviewing them about aggressive selling tactics that might contribute to financial fraud food within Stratton Oakmont twelve of these employees had lied under oath protecting Jordan and the company and so far they'd suffered suffered zero consequences in fact they recurrently sidling up to their desks ready to make millions of dollars in stock sales that day the two who had cracked on the other hand had been banned by the S. e. c. from working insecurities for life and Jordan had happily defy it them they were probably flipping burgers somewhere drowning in debt and falling behind on their million dollar mortgage payments. It was a shame name but it was no longer his problem. Danny Porush meanwhile was screaming at a broker for taking time on the clock to feed his goldfish pets like Goldfish were allowed at the office but taking valuable time out of their working hours to feed them was not not Jordan watched as the young broker apologized profusely which did little to curtail Danny's tirade. Jordan couldn't help Alpe laugh. His business partner was nuts but it was part of his chom. Danny concluded his tirade by reaching into the fishbowl polled and grabbing the brokers goldfish with his bare hands then sure enough. He swallowed it all in a day's work when the clock ticked to nine thirty. AM Jordan's Legion of brokers attacked their telephones and and spent the next eight hours driving sales of Steve Madden stock by midday. The price of the stock had already more than tripled and by closing time Jordan's prophets skimmed twenty two million dollars via the use of his rat hole. Jordan found it to be an auto kind of poetic justice the SEC was suing him for twenty two million dollars and he made the settlement in a day not that he was simply letting his money goes to the federal government. He wasn't giving up without a fight but somehow he couldn't shake the feeling that the noose was tightening he put the thought out of his mind and set out for a night of celebration wondering how many many of these nights he had left but then at the start of Nineteen ninety-four special agent Gregory Coleman with the FBI cool twinned that Jordan was laundering money in Swiss bank accounts unluckily for Jordan money laundering injuring with special agent Coleman's we'll house according to agent Coleman the first time he mets Jordan Belfort it was on his hundred hundred sixty seven foot yacht called the Nadine which he had docked in New York as Coleman and a fellow agent walked onto the boat they could see a spread of lobster and caviar champagne and fat stacks of bills laid out on a buffet table. Jordan orden was a consummate host offering to help the investigators out however he could he then attempted to bribe them agent Coleman Holman new then and there that he wanted to take Jordan Belfort down the guy got under his skin he told jo-john as much and Jordan didn't told the agents to get off his boat as they made their way down the stairs Jordan through two of the lobsters at them after years of prying the lid was finally wrenched off the F. B. I. placed immense pressure on the Swiss list government to cooperate with their investigation. They were able to apply similar pressure to a few of Jordan's associates who are helping him smuggle money overseas when faced with enough jail time the witnesses agreed to talk next Jordan finally finely faces his day of reckoning now back to the story in December nineteen ninety-three thirty-one-year-old Roll Jordan Belfort was on top of the world he had taken. Steve Madden Public and his firm may twenty two million dollars in a day his his personal sheriff. That was a cool thirteen million dollars. He was busy laundering that money into a Swiss bank account fronted by his wife's wife's Aunt Patricia for her part on Patricia was thrilled to be receiving more than one hundred and twenty thousand dollars allowance a year which allowed amounted to move into a massive apartment near her grandchildren who lived in London and Best of all the twenty two million dollar lawsuit that the SEC had slapped him with seemed to be crumbling. Also Jordan's attorney Zorkin told him I explained that the SEC had enough to slap stratton oakmont on the wrist but the case wasn't as bulletproof as they'd hoped Jordan's overly cautious business practices of never leaving a paper trail and never conducting business on the phone had saved him the SEC didn't have enough to bring the full wrath of Pon Stratton oakmont instead in Nineteen ninety-four the SEC. We see told children. They were willing to settle the suit for three million dollars on one condition. Jordan never worked insecurities. He's again he would have to step down from Stratton Oakmont and find some other way of making an honest living at first the idea disgusted Jordan he had built Stratton Oakmont from the ground floor. Hundreds of employees relied on him. He couldn't pull out is a safe himself and let the company fold but I had mu good news. Stratton oakmont didn't have to close just because ause Jordan couldn't run. The company didn't mean he couldn't let Danny run it and then act as Danny's adviser for all the SEC Z. Cad Jordan could take office across the hall. He could stick his head in from time to time as a consultant he could continue to shape the company's future an play the stock market as one of Stratton oakmont clients in the private sector. It all felt too good to be true. There was no no way it was that easy that he could walk away from the lawsuit the company and retire a rich man with his wife and kids. Jordan then took some time to consider the offer walking away from Stratton oakmont would break his heart but he also knew it was time to make exchanges. Maybe he should hang up his hat. Sober up and ride off into the sunset shortly thereafter in nineteen ninety four thirty two year old Jordan Belfort took the deal he settled the lawsuit and that should have been the end of it he should have walked away from fraudulent activities altogether but he didn't in fact the majority of Jordan's illicit activities ramped up in nineteen ninety four and would continue for the next four years during this time he would use a method called cockroach.

"In that moment Jordan resolved old to get sober and be the kind of husband he would want his daughter Chamba to marry someday he dismissed the sex worker through his drugs drugs down the toilet and called his wife to tell her he loved her his duchess wife who still had family overseas. Aziz in England one family member specifically on Patricia a fiery woman who hated the establishment and loved her nephew a few in law now Jordan's wheels turning if aren't Patricia would open a Swiss bank account in her name. Jordan could funnel money money into it plus. He would give her a spending allowance to the tune of ten thousand pounds a month. He could let us spent her final years. A A wealthy woman Jordan did not like to linger before executing on a great idea like this seventy two hours after he first landed in Geneva. Jordan was on a flight from London escorting on Patricia to Switzerland but now the real work began he and John Jock had agreed to begin with three million dollars in Patricia new account which would be funneled into his shell company laundered and then put back into the account. Luckily Jordan had just mule to get the money overseas his childhood friend and current drug dealer todd had married a Swiss woman caroline several years back which was absolutely perfect because caroline was citizen. The likelihood of her being flanked by customs was slim to none she was the perfect person to mule the money into Switzerland and to Jordan's surprise she agreed to do it without much convincing after all to her the stakes probably probably seemed low back in those days metal detectors the only thing standing between the money mule and a Swiss Bank and since money is is pure paper she was able to get through customs would nearly three million dollars strapped to her waist and chest the parents also got in on the deal for a small fee they were happy to take a few family holidays to their home country about six in total until all twenty million dollars had been moved into on Patricia Swiss Bank account there at least it was safe safe from the SEC but little else was just as Jordan's money was tucked away for safekeeping that summer in Nineteen Ninety Ninety three a series of subpoenas started landing on the desks of several of his staff at Stratton oakmont and as each employee was march touchdown town for interviews Jordan felt the familiar itch of a very old problem who would stay loyal and and who would hang him out to dry in a moment to strata nights crack under the thumb soon nominees volcanoes tornadoes earthquakes. Todd and Todd's extended family were helping him. You'll his legal earnings to Switzerland where it was being laundered through shell companies then squirreled away a Swiss bank account. The plan was working so well that he spent the next four months celebrating he had resolved to get sober and stop cheating on his wife but that resolve lasted about two weeks he spent the rest of nineteen ninety-three drunk high eight and lucrative then in December nineteen ninety-three just after three in the morning thirty-one-year-old eighty one year old Jordan Belfort walk through his bedroom door and was greeted by a glass of water to the face his wife. Nadine gene stood red-faced before him. She was furious for several reasons. All of them justified. I the the helicopter that adjusts crash landed in the yard and woken the entire neighborhood second the fact that Jordan was high on Quaid lutes and clearly clearly drunk third Venice. She wasn't sure who Venice was but Jordan had said the name in his sleep and Nadine rightfully fully guest she was a sex worker Jordan had been partying with this was the most delicate balance and their relationship. Nadine eighteen knew that her husband slept with sex workers. She didn't love it but she loved the lifestyle that Jordan provided her so she dealt with fit she would scream at him. Put up a fight then eventually give in knowing nothing would change of all the things this money could buy this. OUGHTA lack of accountability was by far the most convenient the unhappy couple spent the better half off the morning arguing until Nadine finally stormed out of there master bedroom and into a guest room down the whole his head still the buzzing. Jordan tried his best to get some sleep two hours later he was awoken by his made and personal assistant. They came bustling in bringing Jordan breakfast aspirin and tried to get him standing upright. This had become Jordan's life. A blur of an existence fueled by constant supply of foods uppers downers a steady intake of alcohol and just enough cocaine to keep him focused then the next morning a cleanup crew of personal stuff would get him back on on his feet and he'd start the cycle again. "Joe wolf Wall Street, Jordan Belfort hours like so many, this pain, you know, like in the movie, he has an interesting answer that, but yours is basically, this is in psychology. This is called reason respecting bias. Yeah, people need to have a reason. You can't say because sometimes I sell stuff and people are like toy wise, your program, not free and I'm like, I don't know why subway bucks people will. People will gladly pay like ten dollars for junk food at McDonald's, but you're like a while. I'm gonna show you what I spent a million dollars learning how to build a online business. No, that should be free. I'm like, fuck you. Well, that's sometimes transition what, what baffles me. Is a, we'll get requests all the time. Right people are asking for discount or whatever. And I've actually replied and said the very laptop computer that you're using a message me on. Did you ask them for the same right now? So I don't always doesn't exist. So so in the transition we make it so that we can annihilate that type of thinking right off the bat. And then in the pitch we moved to the pitch move. Quick, moved to the transitions always gonna be the shortest part. The introductions. Usually the shortest and the transition is even shorter. The pitch. I have a very specific formula and all of that. But at the I'd like to say, what is the purpose? Because we're just talking psychology right now, the purpose of a pitch is to ask for the sale, but it's to build value. Here is one transaction happens. A transaction happens when someone thinks they're taking advantage of you. That's the truth. Okay. So if I'm gonna give you this pen and I told you this pen is now currently available for the next ten days or a penny. Someone says, what a penny, who I got that pen costs a dollar fifty. It's APRIL's a dollar eighty at Office Depot I'm buying. So you're taking advantage of me. You're getting a deal, right?.
