That is a Bloomberg business flash. Thank you so much for that update Charlie palette really appreciate it. It's Tim Steve and Katie greifeld. It's Bloomberg business. We can rely on the Bloomberg interactive brokers studio in New York. Katie filling in for Carol, who is on assignment. She will be back next week. We've got a great story on the Bloomberg terminal this afternoon. It's all about the transition to clean energy. And there's a surprising place where we're actually seeing green jobs, a proliferation of them. And to see surprising because Georgia is what we're talking about. And it's in the crosshairs right now because of gubernatorial election and a Senate election as well. But it's also showing how a once deeply red state has gone big on green jobs. We got Brian eckhaus with us. He's deputy team leader for power and climate for Bloomberg news. He joins us via Zoom from Los Angeles this afternoon. Brian, good to have you with us. Hey, why Georgia? I mean, as you write in the piece, there's no mandate for clean energy when it comes to using solar in the state, for example. Yeah, but they have a lot of things going for them. One, they've got one of the most trafficked airports in the country in Atlanta. They've got a strong rail network. They've got a port. It's a right to work state so you don't have to be mandated to join a union. It's also has low electricity prices. And property taxes are lower property prices are lower. So it makes sense in the point of view of it's a strong logistical hub. Has this factored into Georgia's politics at all? I mean, I still think of Georgia as a red state. It's unintuitive to think it would be so big on clean tech. That's a great question. Last year in two Senate races, Democrats won both Senate seats. John ossoff winning and Raphael warnick would allow Democrats to pass a party line vote for the most landmark climate Bill in the history of the country. And that will enable more plants, factories that make solar and batteries and EV equipment. In places like Georgia and South Carolina, Tennessee and Ohio, places with really strong automotive partitions that may not have a lot of solar panels on roofs around the ground. So what is, okay, apart from what's happening in Georgia because you mentioned just now Tennessee South Carolina, Ohio, other traditionally red states. If it's not necessarily, okay, apart from this being a good place for these jobs. Is there certain policy that is driving decisions like this or is this kind of a win of the free market, Brian? I think for Georgia, many ways it is a one in the free market. They are advocating to companies that are overseas that want to have vectors in the U.S. that look, if you want to have cheap land, cheap power, you should come here. Granted, they're offering subsidies, which every state and region tend to do to win jobs. So it's not completely fair. But that said, it's much more free market driven to other states on the coast. They really pushed renewables and clean tech ten years ago. What it was at mainstream. Now in many cases it is. And it's, I mean, it's just funny, Brian, you highlight in the piece that you have, you know, the Republicans in Georgia taking credit for this, you know? You write that Republican governor Brian Kemp. He's touted the surge in green jobs. I mean, how big of a talking point has this turned into? It's a pretty big deal. I mean, they've lowered the last couple of years. The biggest solar factory in the western hemisphere. They're bringing Hyundai they're bringing in rivian. SK has a half mile long battery factory that an hour northeast of Atlanta. It's a major job creator in the state. Everybody wants credit for it. And in many ways, it's bipartisan achievements, which you don't see in a lot of states on the coast where it really is viewed as a democratic progressive initiative. Brian, in your piece, there was nothing about nuclear, which I found interesting because nuclear power is something that is increasingly or I should say still a part of Georgia. And Katie and I spoke to a CEO of a crypto firm based in California earlier, this month. And he told us that they are actually expanding in Georgia because of the proximity they have to nuclear energy when he can set up Bitcoin miners there. How did you think about nuclear when you approach this piece? I mean, you're right. I mean, nuclear is a very important part of the energy mix in Georgia. The only new nuclear reactor that's going up in the country is in Georgia It definitely is part of their story. But the story that focused on this one was more about creating jobs for manufacturing. And in many ways, because of state level incentives, there wasn't their nature of the free market in Georgia, but also the fact that you have congressional bills that pass under Biden. We're going to see a huge jump in manufacturing for clean tech in the southeast and the Midwest. You're joining us right now from our beautiful Los Angeles office, which is just fantastic and brings me back to memories of me being there, which by the way, Katie, if you haven't been to the LA office, it's pretty simple. I've never been to California. That's not true. No, it's not. I haven't been to the Los Angeles bureau. It's really nice. Light streaming through the windows. So Brian, if you're Gavin

The Envaluable Nature of Gun Ownership

"I want to continue to talk about this idea of gun ownership. The invaluable nature of being able to own and on your own gun and defend yourself. You know, unless the government is going to provide a police officer that's sitting on my street 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I have to hold down the fort. We got a guy, we were looking on the ring camera community thing. There are some guy brazen enough to go on the lady's house down the street from where we live. Well, it's not down the street just across the golf course of where we live. What was in our House, I guess she woke up, yo, she went to get some water. She caught him in there and he ran. The police ain't sitting at your front door. So when some thug want to go night night and he need Brandon Tatum to help him go night night, then I'm very glad to do that for you.

The Long Game on Gun Control Is a Short One

"The overwhelming majority of people who die due to a firearm, they die from handguns, it's not even close. Handguns and rifles aren't even close at all. You would think if it was really about protecting people, they would ban handguns because handguns are responsible for majority of the school shootings, they're responsible for majority of the deaths that occur by way of a firearm. They're much more easily concealed, they're much more readily in the available and they're cheaper. Handguns would be banned if our government actually wanted to do something to curb violence in the United States of America. It has nothing to do with that. They can not ban handguns. They have to go for the big scary ones because there's people in this country that are so wimpish and half brain dead that they look at a gun because it's big and scary and they disagree with whatever the government says. They're going to start with the rifle, then they go into the handgun, they want us to be disarmed populace.

Two Brothers Go on Stabbing Spree in Canada

"Don't you find it ironic and I know it's very sad as well, but it's ironic that there is a mass stabbing in Canada. As their dictator alludes to the fact or at least try to push the agenda that there's no need for handguns in Canada. It just blows my mind, this person who went on a stabbing spree, and I thought I could remember the numbers. I think he killed 13 people. Let me look at the numbers so I can get it right. They kid a whole bunch of people. I'm a fine, I'm a final number. I totally thought I could remember, but I can't. Him and his brother, it appears that it was his brother, and he was found dead in a field, not sure according to authorities, one of the suspects was found dead and it didn't appear to be self inflicted injuries. So I don't know if somebody fought him back and killed him or his brother killed him, but these two brothers went on a stabbing spree and just started slaughtering people. And they killed more people, and that particular scenario then some of these quote unquote mass shootings that have occurred in the United States of America.

Black Leaders Have to Do Better

"Black Lives Matter. I'm done with them. I think I beat the dead horse. It's very shameful that people of color, it seems that we can't get nothing. We can't get our stuff together. I'm just being honest. You know, I look at the movie Uncle Tom two and I just looking at how I feel like there was a bigger majority of black folks that were doing well to have the right mindset believed in God wouldn't about wokeism. And then now you look at it, you say, it's incredibly I don't want to say embarrassing, I will say embarrassing. It's embarrassing. The lack of informed celebrities and leaders in the community. And some people may disregard what I'm saying, but you know, how do you vote at 90% for one party? I mean, just in general, is there no diversity of thought? And I'm telling you how because people come after me.

I mean, you go to Microsoft, Grubhub, DocuSign, DoorDash, I only want to talk about bumble 'cause none of y'all better be on the bumble. Go down the list, these major corporations, that's not even including celebrities. That's not they had so much influence around the world. And somehow black people found a way to mess it up. How in the work with that much power and influence, why couldn't a group of black people actually do something for black people? Why couldn't they clean up the inner cities, build the schools better, get kids a better education, somehow have a contingency of dads, community leaders, curbing crime in the inner city, they could have done something, they didn't do nothing but pimp y'all. "Can I be honest with y'all? The problem is black folks. Not all. 'cause there's a lot of genuine, smart, good, will to do a well intentioned black folks that live in this country. You will be mine. You will be idiotic if you didn't think that there were great black people that live in this country. But there is a remnant of degenerate black folks. That happened to get in positions of power, they happen to get leadership positions, they happen to be celebrities that people look up to and they are fraudulent as you know what. Out here taking, I think it's shallow Maya. I think that's how you say his name. Shallow Maya, I didn't know who named the key. I don't know if this supposed to be a Muslim or whatever name he's trying to have. I don't know. But you take the people's money, you claim that you care about black lives. And black people are not benefiting from half of this money. And they use the death of thugs for the most part. Name one and they raise money on they wouldn't have to look. I can go down the list. Judge Grants Trump Special Master Over Investigation

"Let's get into some more information. I just finished breaking it down how Donald Trump got to, I think, an incredible win with the judge granting him the special master to oversee the material that the FBI took from his personal home. Donald Trump in his rally just recently, I didn't watch the rally because I didn't see him a thousand of them. And I tell you what, I ain't never seen nobody talk as long as Trump. I mean, I could talk with Trump, be talking three hours at the rally. You wait for 40 hours, and then he talked for three hours at the end of it. So I didn't watch it, but I'm sure he said a lot of really good things, things that he'd been saying before, things that I agree with. But Donald Trump and his rally really fired up the base with his articulation of what they did when they stormed through his residence. And he spoke about how they went through Melania's closet, he spoke about how they even went through baron his room and, you know, it just gave you this visceral or it can give you a visceral visceral feeling once you imagine what they would have possibly done.

California Isn't Quite as Bad as Brandon Thought

"Have to set the record straight because I know a lot of people that listen to me live in California. You know, I, my only exposure to California has been Los Angeles, downtown Los Angeles, and the dirty, ugly places of LA. And I had a little bit exposure to San Francisco, homeless people everywhere, trash everywhere, and so I tell you, I had a negative perception of California. Some of the Fresno area where my wife grew up at, that area is pretty nice. The Hanford, the area is pretty nice. But I had a disdain for California. I hate going to California. I don't like driving on the roads in California. The fact that it's leftists in the taxes are out of control. I just had a true despise for California and I'm willing to admit that to you guys today. Then I went to an amazing church over the weekend. I don't know if I call it preach or spoke. I did three sermons. One on Saturday night, early morning service in the second service in the morning on Sunday. Out there in what I would consider to be, where were we at Orange County? Huntington Beach, Orange County, what's the other place that I was at? Newport Beach. I have to say, after driving in that area, I literally want to move to California now. I have never seen an area so beautiful and clean and neat. My whole perception of California was that it was dirty bombs everywhere and they just taken over every place and so much traffic everywhere. Then I went out there and I said, my God, I see why people live here

Where is Joe for this Becky, given that I know this is his favorite favorite company, skyrocketing more than 70% to an intraday high above $28 yesterday. This is a mid multiple halts due to volatility ended yesterday session 29% higher. This comes after a regulatory filing from Monday night that showed that GameStop chairman Ryan Cohen placing another bet on the struggling retailer buying call options this time with strike prices between 60 and $80 that means he's betting the stock can rise as high as $80 per share for context the stock closing on Monday at $16 in a Cohen and purchase purchase grabbing a lot of attention as you might imagine among retail traders on Reddit's WallStreetBets form the ticker was reportedly the most popular mention in that chat room yesterday. We're going to talk more about the story of Tom sasna from tasty trade who can maybe break down what's happening and where all the retail action is coming from. Becky. Twitter, antics from Elon Musk last night, the world's richest person tweeting that he is buying Manchester United before later tweeting that it was a long running joke and that he's not buying any sports teams. Of course, that admission that it's a joke didn't come for more than four hours after the original tweet. And in the meantime, there was quite a bit of activity in Manchester United shares. Manchester United has been traded publicly on the New York Stock Exchange since I believe 2012 that stock is still up by about 3.8%. The tweet followed this one in which Musk said he supports the left half of the Republican Party and the right half of the Democratic Party, but Andrew, I don't know if he didn't know Manchester United was a publicly traded team if he wasn't thinking about this, but clearly markup manipulation if you're looking at this as a regulator. Well, I mean, I don't know if it's market manipulation. I imagine in this case it was unintentional. I want to. My guess is too. My guess is he didn't realize, wasn't thinking it through, but you were talking about people who made and lost a lot of money in the meantime in the four and a half hours. So but I think in terms of in terms of describing his market manipulation, it's only market manipulation if you are demonstrably trying to buy and sell it yourself. Okay, let me say. Let me just say, isn't there the kind of the level of with great power comes great responsibility sort of mantra, the Spider-Man thing? That goes through. There's no question that he should not have tweeted this in any which way, given the impact on the stock market and given the impact on this individual stock and the potential for people to make or lose lots of money. I'm not, I'm not making that argument. I'm just saying in terms of thinking of it as true manipulation. Now I knew that interestingly, there's some folks online who've been looking at options activity and didn't see that. Stock and there were some big, a bunch of it. Very, very recently. Did somebody put a bug in his ear? I mean, that's when it gets more complicated. If in fact, there was something else going on. But I don't know. I've generally, I think, not sympathetic, but I think it was a mistake, I think. Joining us right now to talk about all of it is Tom sassy trades founder and CEO, Tom. I want to get into it with each individual name. But there does seem to be a trend here, the phenomenon does seem to be back at least a little bit. What do you think is happening? Well, I think there was a we had a pretty decent size or durational hiatus and I think everybody got the bug again. There was a big demand for speculation. Andrew, and I think that it's back. It may be short lived, but it's back. Am I wrong to think Tom that the bug you need to have the bug to be back? But you also need to have money to be back and the truth is that money is not really back. I mean, things have moved a little bit higher over the past couple of months and maybe that's what we're talking about here. Well, I think after trading these markets for many, many decades, people, they regroup, and they reload. And I think that once you catch the bug at any point in anywhere in your career, all of a sudden it feels like, hey, I'm missing something when I'm not trading. And I actually think this is really good for business. I don't think necessarily BBBY going up, doubling or something in a couple of days is great for BBBY. But I think it is really good for the business because it does bring people back. And it gets them excited about finance. I think it's good for you. I think it's good for us. And I think it's good for the industry. Can we talk though about what seems like, I don't know, can I call it insanity insanity? When you look at this stock now up 20% in the pre market today, we talked about it being up 70% intraday yesterday off of the effectively call options that Ryan Cohen has bought where he believes that the stock or at least indicates, I don't know if he believes it or not. But indicates that he thinks at least or he's hoping that the stock pays out to him if it's at 60 or $80. But is that realistic? Explain this trade as far as you can see what's happening here. I mean, no, it's not realistic. And no, in my world, from a trader's perspective, I would say it's an idiotic play. But he's taken a shot and he's trying to create some excitement around whatever he's doing. He's taking sometimes people think they can move markets and I guess sometimes they can get people excited if they get to the right crowd, but usually it's pretty, again, it's hard to make it last. And I mean, realistically, the expected move in Bed Bath & Beyond, given where the stock closed last night over the next 30 days

"On the action. A regulatory filing shows Cohen's RC ventures bought call options on 1.6 million shares of Bed Bath & Beyond betting the stock is headed about 300% higher by January. My co is breaking this trade down, Mike. What do you make of this? This one? Well, this is pretty incredible. So first of all, Bed Bath & Beyond traded about 2 million contracts today. That would represent 200 million shares at 7.8 times the average daily volume. And by the way, the float is only about 65 million shares. So the options volume represents about three times the float. Now we saw a lot of activity in strikes as high as the 45s those were actually that expired at the end of this week. Those were the most active contracts, but the ones that really caught my eye. And the ones that he indicated he was purchasing go out to January of 2023, he was buying strikes from 60 up to 80, the 80s traded over a 100,000 contracts today. Those were trading for several dollars a share over three bucks. So buyers of those are risking a material portion of the current stock price on bets that the squeeze that we're looking at here could continue, maybe much, much higher. What was interesting is that shortly after this GameStop shares started to surge as well. I mean, this is all part of this meme complex going on in the risk trade back on. Tim, what do you think? What do you make of all this? Well, I look at the short interest in Bed Bath & Beyond. And 36, 37% at least the readings I'm getting, they could be a little stale, but if anything, maybe there's been that number is lower because there's been a short squeeze, but this is a stock that's had those numbers up close to 60%. And so again, the existential dynamics to me at Bed Bath & Beyond are different than a GameStop or even an AMC. I think they have a business. They have balance sheet issues. And so again, that was also an issue at AMC. I'm not surprised to see this. And this is a broader market dynamic with what's going on with meme stocks and risk. Karen actually emailed me a chart of Bed Bath & Beyond's debt, which is trading horribly compared to what the stock is doing is that they should raise money immediately and take advantage of this stuff. As those other two companies did. Right, exactly. Yeah, but here's the thing, okay? Is it the tail wag in the dog? Just because he goes out there and buys a bunch of calls that are way out of the money there. There's no fundamental reason why this stock should ever trade there. He is squeezing the shorts deliberately and let me tell you, if he did that and then the stock rallies the way to do and then they sell stock, buyer beware there because there's no fundamental reason why the stock should be here right now. I think that's fair to say. And so I mean, to me, this feels like a big fugazi as the kids say. As a guy says. The guy had told me. It's real. I mean. But yeah, exactly. Fundamentals. If he doesn't go do this, he knows that buying all those calls so far out of the money is going to squeeze the stock. Well, and never have to act about what he's spending to buy those calls to produce this much more in market cap. That's an interesting dynamic too. I mean, that's probably a great trait on his part. Yeah, I mean, we can say here all day long and we can talk about what the fundamentals are, but that's what we're going to do is look at the technical of the company, but that's not what this is trading on. That's not what the meme socks have done. And I think we've all seen over the last year. You can't necessarily bet against these retail traders. They clearly have a lot more power and they're realizing that. So no, for the fundamentals, it's not something you're looking at, but it's not to say it can't happen. Mike? Would you be inclined at this point to put on a bearish options trade on bed bath? Or is that just waters to treacherous to tread in? Yeah, so a bearish bet if it meant selling some upside call spreads or something like that, trying to collect some of this highly elevated premium in the vent that the effort to squeeze it doesn't work out. That might make sense? Shorting the stock absolutely not. Selling naked calls, absolutely not. And buying puts, probably not either because they're just too pricing. All right, Mike, thanks for that. Mike co for more options action, be sure to tune into the full show Friday 5 30 p.m. Eastern Time. Up next, final trades. Final trade time, bonna win. Spike all stock replacement. Tim? That higher income trade down in Walmart shares to me is attractive. I think it's stickier than the market. 14. Dear, we talked about this earlier. I actually do like their long-term, their long-term story here. Dan? Yeah, AutoNation, powerful breakout look the reload, maybe on the long side of that breakout level. Such a fun show tonight, Gordy, would you rather, Bono and bring back any guests? I mean, a successful outing. Thank you for watching. See you back here. "So angry and saddened, I've spent a lot of time in Walmart. I like Walmart. Walmart doesn't have they always make fun of Walmart shoppers. Yeah, we're schlubby and we're trashy and Walmart was one of the last holdouts of the big box stores to keep supporting and selling my pillow products. Now make no mistake. Big box stores sell my pillow products because they make money. My pillow is one of the most successful products at Walmart. Everybody knows it. But you know, when Mike lindell went to The White House and shed from the rose garden, it's a good time to pray for our country. It's a good time to open your Bible. It's a good time to turn to God. The beast was injured. The beast went nuts. And they turned on him. They turned on him with an intensity that I've never seen. And the activists, the anti religion activists, were then further infuriated by Mike's insistence that the November 2020 election was tainted. And that we've got to focus on election integrity. Well, they doubled down. They went after Bed Bath & Beyond in coals. All the big box stores that carried my pillow products and they would email them and they would call them and they blitzed them. With demands that they stopped selling my pillow because they wanted to destroy Mike lindell and the company that Mike lindell founded. My pillow. Walmart has been a holdout. As I saw a week or two ago, I noticed there were my pillow products in Walmart. And I asked my friends at my pillow, my contacts over there says, yeah, Walmart's still sells my pillow.

"To our self care. I did. So in my self care this week, two things. On a simpler note, but not so simple, but also wonderful. I did a little haul at the spice suite. Oh. And so I got online and bought myself a couple of boxes. Wonderful. Got an array of spices a char moolah. I got a Greek spice. I got I just got all kinds of wonderful things rosemary infused olive oil. And raspberry infused balsamic vinegar. Vinegar. And you know, just all manners of wonderful things. And so I was very excited about that. I just wanted to share. And then also, so you know, in my daily, just working on myself and trying to find my peace and all of those things. I purchased a book and it's a translation because this is an old old old, owned old book that is written in Chinese. But I got the English version, which they said was actually this one was a really good translation. And as Tao tsing and it's just a book that talks about imparting balance and perspective into your life and how to attain more peace and serenity is the name is the theme this year and going forward. So I am getting into this title Jing and I just wanted to share that with you all. That's my self care this week. What about yourself? Okay, so I realized that my very much black woman fashion as we talked about last week. I am a great value for cleanliness specifically the cleanliness of my home and I find that my cleaning on the weekends. Really does sort of reset my mind and get me in a good place. And so I've really been looking forward to straightening up. I was talking about on Instagram this weekend, how I remember being a little child, the teenager and my grandma and my mom heading out Saturday morning to start their errands and them hollering on their way out the door. You better straighten up this house and it better be straightened up, by the time I come back. And so I've been thinking a lot about that every Saturday, I think about, okay, I'm going straighten up this house before I do anything else. So in that vein, I purchased, I went down to the Bed Bath & Beyond and purchased me some new cleaning supplies. Yeah. I got me. So one of the things that I got so this one wasn't from Bed Bath & Beyond, once back beyond the other ones from Amazon. So I purchased a steam mop oh yes, sanitize my floors. And I mean my life is just never will never be the same. I don't know that I will ever ever use a conventional map ever again. Since revolutionized, my floor cleaning experience. And I'm very pleased with my purchase. I went down to the Bed Bath & Beyond and found myself a baseboard Genie. This is an instrument that will has like a swiveling head on it that will allow you to clean your baseboards without having to get down on your hands and knees. And you know, 'cause, you know, we done got too old for that. So I was able to just you can use it. You can either choose to sort of wet the cleaning pad or use your cleaning solution as you generally do or even dry. It has like a microfiber pad that will sort of make for good sort of dusting and cleaning and maintaining the cleanliness of your baseboard. Oh, I love to hear and I am just over here. I mean, my floors are just thriving. And I just am granting your life. Getting my life. I'm so I love to hear that you know how I am about cleaning the house. It is a special place in my heart. And I love a good cleaning contraption. You know what I'm saying? I think that is just fantastic. I love it happy for you, friend. And I see these reels that you've been making. You're out here like the youth dim. Really learning how to maneuver and try the Internet. I am trying to, you know, just sort of you're doing a good job..

From one day, I'm David Brown, and this is business wars daily on this Tuesday, February 8th. A few years back in before times before the pandemic, that is, Bed Bath & Beyond decided to put some of its decluttering expertise to work for itself. CEO Mark tritton thought that what the store needed was a clean sweep. Too many options and too much in store chaos led to so called purchase paralysis. He wanted the home goods retailer to clean up its act marketplace reports. So Bed Bath & Beyond did some tidying up that included closing underperforming stores and reducing inventory. Focusing on more profitable private label products. The goal was to create a more organized clutter free experience for shoppers. But the very moves that were supposed to improve customer appeal left at vulnerable to the supply chain issues that have plagued retailers throughout the pandemic according to The Wall Street Journal. Streamlining inventory made it tougher to find substitutes when certain products were out of stock. And the disruptions also caused confusion with suppliers. Some were told that their products would be discontinued, only to get another order when other products were hard to find. During this past holiday season Bed Bath & Beyond had trouble keeping 200 of its bestselling items on the shelves. Customers looking for sheets, towels, and certain kitchen appliances among other items were out of luck costing a $100 million in lost sales trend told analysts earlier this month. On top of that, foot traffic overall was light on Black Friday, even with big price promotions. Meanwhile, over at target the story is much different the cross category retailer offers many of the products Bed Bath & Beyond offers and then some, target itself had a lot to celebrate this holiday season while other retailers lamented poor foot traffic as customers opted for online shopping, targets foot traffic was actually up more than 6% compared to two years earlier. The company boosted sales more than 15% over the previous year, besting even mega rivals like Walmart and Amazon in its growth. Bed Bath & Beyond says it will spend more than $200 million over the next few years to upgrade its supply chain to address inventory issues industry dive reports. New technology and changes to how products are replenished will drop the lag time for getting new inventory from more than a month to just ten days. The company says. But critics are skeptical. The company's stock value has fallen by half from the beginning of the pandemic. That's a far cry from when it was a darling in the early pandemic days as people spent their vacation in entertainment money on redecorating their homes. The company is planning on closing more stores this year in addition to the nearly 200 it's already shuttered CNBC reports. That leaves some wondering whether the betting in bath products retailer is beyond, repair. From one tree, this is business wars daily. I remember years ago when I was living in Virginia Beach, so it would have to be high school college era, a story about some of the Chevrolet dealerships in town, price fixing. So no one dealer was cutting the other dealer's profits. What's interesting to me though is, is I've seen stories about Apple and price fixing and Amazon and Google and price fixing for all their electronic tools. But I never see anything come about because of it. If you want to buy an Amazon Alexa, if you want to buy, even an iPhone, you're basically going to pay the exact same price no matter where you shop, whether it's from the manufacturer, whether it's Walmart, whether it's Best Buy whatever it is. It's all because a price fixing. What I don't understand why they don't get in trouble for it. Got me started on this the other day, I was looking for a new seat cushion. I like the purple seat cushions and they used to have them at bed bath beyond, but they don't have them anymore. They stopped carrying them. When I went online, the only places to find them were Amazon, or purple, and it's all the same exact price. They're making it so the only way you can get it is from the manufacturer themselves. So I guess they can price fix and get away with it.

"Of those brands your favorite. They're all unique. Loved them all that. I love that question because if it's funny one of the things. We talked about In the development of these brands as well as the launching of their bronzes had we make sure that we make each one of them their own unique big launch moment. That could be tough right. I mean for any of the marketers and brands on the phone or on your podcast. You can imagine right like six in a row. Once a month to more still to come this year we worked really hard to make each of them unique and we started with what about this brand in the role. It's gonna play in customers lives. Should we lift up into just a couple of highlights I'm a big fan of our table. Kitchen line on brand on in part probably because i need the most inspiration indication but One of the things that we found from talking to customers as we were getting ready to launch that brand is a renewed importance about the gathering of family and friends around meal and around food. I think probably because we couldn't do it for so long and how people are getting ready to hopefully welcome people back into their homes for the holidays But we we wanna take inspiration notion on our table And really bring life. We did our first ever uncooking series on the with with some hometown chefs bringing to life some of the ideas all the way to While sage which is our young eclectic free-spirited brand of Bedding and bath That's the one. I've talked about as all about inspiration so for us. We did our first ever dedicated to talk and instagram channels. We've never done that for an individual own brand and the last one. I point to each of the brands to me is unique. I won't find a favorite. But i really commend the team working on these relaunches to find that unique aspect. Reach these brands and bring it to life cindy. I'd like to talk a little bit before. Beginning the creative brief about purpose and you rattled off the purpose earlier in this discussion. I've heard you say in other forums that you felt our purpose has been clear but our positioning has not been and then your role. These individual brands into that mix. So could you walk us through how you think about the purpose of the company the promise or the positioning of the company you know sort of what is your framework for your brand. And how do the sub brands fit into that. If at all sure absolutely must just as a starting point at the very highest level the our purposes to make it easy for customers to feel at home. We don't take that lightly it's part of the transformation planet important part of what we call our strategic our strategic house on as our framework. I believe that within that purpose really Helping our own associates and our customers understand what it is that our brand stands for. And why am why we matter as a brand. And that's true. By the way for each of the key banners right we have this overall strategic framework but what bed bath stands for what it needs to stand for. And how it differentiates versus competition right is connected to but different from the same for bye bye baby and for harmon and of course for decorous we tackle bed bath bed bath and beyond i as as the mothership and core brand Really important for us. We learned a lot about our customers. As we've discussed that we need to stand for inspiration not just items on that. We really need to be focused on what it is that creates a happier home and how we can help our customers achieve that. I think the team is really took on the challenge of how do we create for each of these banners within rate make it easy to feel at home as an overall um structure for the strategic framework. What do each of these brands uniquely stand for. The own brand question is really interesting. One within matt rate on. It's we've been so careful about the development of these brands in the position of them. And how each one of them we think of as a proof point right. Why should you believe right that we're committed to make it easier to feel at home. Why should you believe that bed bath and beyond is a place where we wanna be there for every room every moment everything. You need to him happier on each of these new brands rate. Deliver another reason to believe that. That's what we're all about networking what we are delivering. I think i feel pretty good that they do. And i even the way we've launched. He should them. That's really important because if we'd spent the last six months launching a new own brand every month and it was somehow disconnected from our overall purpose are overall positioning. We couldn't be making the strides that were making And so it's it's it's a well integrated effort knifing each of those brands in the end. The two The two more to come this year will also help customers. Think of a destination for everything. They need to home happier to move into the creative brief. Now where we learned a bit more about you and your view and many things in the first one is. How are you a different leader now than you were fifteen months ago in thinking about what's been required to be in this role on at this moment in time for the for the country and for our customers but also this moment for the three year transformational plan. I think i've really had to reach in and find the skills and sort of muscles that i built on influence. I i'm i didn't necessarily plan it this way. In some of the time it can have a conversation about how. I got this crazy career in marketing. Having spent time early in my career starting on the agency side and then in marketing roles for franchisee organizations and then of course you know at retailers like the scale of walmart you have to develop the muscle to bring people along in the journey with you which one part the what right division strategy but also the why. Why are we doing this. Why is this important at. How can you carry that. That knowledge of the y. Into everything you do I i honestly a coming into bed. Bath and beyond and knowing what we had against a ahead of us. I probably had a lot of things on my mind in terms of the skills experiences. I hoped to bring and to be able to contribute. I think those the. I've learned in the fifteen months. The most important one is the ability to really to really influence the organization into really bring people along on this journey who has been the most influential mentor in.

Include bed bath and beyond harmon by baby and decorous on top of her. Cmo role cindy is also the president of decorous and online interior design service. That is a sister company to bed. Bath and beyond the bed bath and beyond brand about forty thousand associates. In one thousand stores is a company under massive transition remodeling half their stores closing poor performing stores launching a host of its own brands plus a newly launched brand campaign so far so good sales in the recent quarter. Strong and their outlook is optimistic. My guests cindy is fifteen months into her role after stint chief digital marketing officer at l. brands owner. Of victoria's secret cindy has worked at some of the great companies and marketing agencies in the world including walmart starwood hotels disney and bbdo. This is my interview with the woman who wants to make it easy for you to feel at home. Cindy davis cindy. Welcome to the cmo podcast. I have been doing looking at your research and the most interesting finding that personal happiness is highly correlated with happiness with your home. So i just have to start with this personal question for us. Indie is your happiness and your happiness with your home correlated as well absolutely absolutely. I think you know jim that i am lucky to be have been sheltered During the pandemic in our home in florida at the beach and it is my happy place but regardless where i am We have found. I'm like our customers rate and we absolutely have found through our research that they tell us that their overall happiness is really based on their happiness with their home and for me. That might be clean out a closet. Refreshing my bedroom but mostly. It's all the new gadgets. I've added to my kitchen throughout the pandemic to to make my own cappuccinos with a smiley face on them. I mean it really made me. Think about the homes. We've been in and is there any non. Are there any non obvious insights behind that about personal happiness being correlated with happiness in the home. Yeah i think so There are sort of at least you know three or four different ways. We've heard people talk about it on one of the things you hear them talking about. That doesn't surprise you is. It's not a house right. it's the little things and the moments that happen in the house that make it a home. Those are the things that you remember. I think we all feel that way on. Think back to any house you've lived in and you probably won't remember the rooms you'll remember game night rate with your family or you'll remember you know a cozy night in front of the fireplace and what you talked about And those moments of connection. I think those are the things that were finding matter. The most to people on an for for our company for bed bath and beyond. It's you know it's how can we enable those moments. How can we help our customers. Create in every one of the rooms in their homes the environment and the opportunity to have those special moments those moments of connection that are really really memorable. We care about safety in our home of course and right. After the pandemic started right safety was paramount out paramount. We care about being able to provide for our families and our homes. But if you really get to it if we really dig underneath you'll find people talking about the special memories and experiences that happened in those rooms and we want to be part of that. That's a great purpose which will get to a little bit later. But i wanna talk a little bit about your startup over the last fifteen months or so you are astoundingly busy and i just want to run through a few things massive multi year brand restage which is underway renovating about half of your stores launching your own brands at a pace of about once a month new ad campaign that even made your most recent earnings call posting. And you're also the president of a sister company to bed. Bath and beyond decorous te on and on and on. So how. how are you doing all this. And how did you start up so quickly to tackle all of this while i'm listening to you. Wrap about right. yeah. I think i should be more tired than i am. I'll start with on the how I had been really fortunate. Amish to attract some great talent myself and to have some really terrific members of my team on people that are not afraid of retail. Because you have to love it. I mean retail has to be your blood to be able to to really move this business forward the way we are set a really great team. I am also just amazed at capacity and the vision on of our leadership team. I think you know. I mean I started after mark trittin. He'd only been here since november. When i got here and i don't think the man sleeps honestly i don't know how he he does what he does on. I'm really excited about the leadership team. That i'm part of but i think the main thing i'm beyond the people is is. I am motivated by the opportunity when when a when a recruiter reached out to me and asked me if i'd be interested in this role joined a company that's in the midst of a massive three year transformation in the middle of a pandemic rate. You might have thought. I would have hesitated but i didn't really. I wanted to jump right in not only because of mark in his ceo role not only because of the leadership team. But i am a fan of this brant I mean i. Some of my oldest memories are shopping back to college for my stepdaughter. And my son and when they were heading off to college need bath and beyond. It's fifty years old as a brand and we all have those moments right that we remember shopping at bed bath and beyond and the opportunity to help modernize this iconic brand. I'm it's what it's what gets me up every morning and keeps me going late into the night Just seeing what we're able to do across the stores across digital with the own brands which. I'm sure we'll talk more about because that's one of my favorite. Things talked about his new brands on. It gives you. It gives you an energy that that gives you the stamina the capacity to.

Why Your Boss Will Live Longer Than You

"While your boss will live longer than you. Unless of course you take my advice by stella. Grisanti of wu pa dot com. I just bought a new shoe rack from bed bath and beyond and got so excited at the thought of seeing my heels all in a row so much so that i began to laugh at. Just how much this meant to me. But then i hearken back to what i learned in grad school and realized how this tidy endeavour signifies much more than my ms wannabe ainley organized. This is actually representative of a life threatening problem. That faces everyone. Who has a boss over talking about here. People has been the root of wars of struggle of heartache physical and emotional and of premature death for as long as we can remember or at least since the famous nineteen sixty seven. Whitehall study proved it so we're talking about here. People is the desire for control according to the two very famous studies. Why hall one away hall. Two one's rank in class status or hierarchy at work or in life have a dramatic influence on lifespan. Who do you think lives longer a busy. Ceo or secretary. I guess my post idol gives it away but keep listening according to the whitehall studies which examined eighteen thousand male civil servants in nineteen sixty seven and then over ten thousand men and women twenty years later. In a longitudinal study it turns out that those in a lower rank have morbidity rate of toys those who occupy higher level positions. The higher your position. The longer you're more likely to live wi- when the responsibilities of si yo cause more stress which leads to spite quarters all levels which leads to cardiovascular issues You would think but actually the study found that the less control you feel you have over your lot in life. The higher your level of stress pece other studies following this theorized that perhaps it's not so much control. The maybe the anticipation of not knowing. What's next same difference to me. So how'd you live longer or just as long as your boss number one outsmart yourself except that you don't have control over the events in your life because you really don't and the only thing you can control is reaction and thoughts in regards to events that you can't control that actually gives you lots of control. In fact it determines about forty percent of your happiness. Outsmart the power struggle. Choose your response to things. I come up number two cre- pretend pockets so maybe you can't control the fact that your company's biggest competitor just came up with the next best thing to sliced bread that your baby cries at night or that. The train is late buchanan. Cre- pretend pockets of control. Pretend pockets of control our little things that you do for yourself to make you feel like you do actually have control in life. This could be making sure you to the gym. No matter what every morning or can be eating healthy or it can be organizing your shoe closet number three except at all but create with intention this music sept. Whatever comes your way as information in an opportunity to create something new and better. If what you got wasn't exactly what you wanted for example. You thought he was the one but getting dumped over lunch might mean he's not accept that learn from the information you gathered during the relationship in continued to intend on finding love but the kind that actually does x. y. and z is all forgiving. Yourself like if your pretend pocket is going to the gym every morning and you don't make it this week except that other things got in the way and continue to intend on healthy lifestyle. Start going again tomorrow. Now that we're all worked up or at least i am off to right next about just how positive it is to be out of control. Sometimes we'll save for later another from her in just a second but i as a listener of this show. You know how important it is to put health. I don't let the chore of going to the doctor get in your way. It did for me before. But now i've tried plush care with plush care i get virtual doctor appointments right through my smartphone or computer. I just pick a time that works for me and book an appointment online. GameStop Reddit-rally sends Wall Street tumbling to its worst week in months

"In late January, a handful of unlikely Wall Street stocks began to skyrocket in value. It has led to big market volatility, and that will be the subject of a special meeting tomorrow with Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and other government regulators. As Paul Solman reports, the spike in these stocks was driven. By an unconventional group of traders who banded together on a buying spree determined to take on the market for their own reasons. It is the latest in our economic Syriza's making sense. The frenzy. Obviously, this thesis is based largely on the fundamentals, Internet chatters hyping and buying stock and seemingly more a bun companies and you're right. It doesn't make any sense at all. AMC Bed, bath and beyond, and the bubble Gamestop crazy, and we're not as dominant as everyone thinks we are. We know what we're looking for. Is the regular Joes versus Wall ST Joe's using the free app Robin Hood to buy Gamestop, a money losing brick and mortar monger of video game disks that seems obsolete now that games are bought and downloaded online. And yet the stock skyrocketed last month, we're going to try to explain what's been happening with Alex Seamus from the University of Chicago Business School and my grandson show violas 17. So Alex set the scene for us What's been going on? There's people on this platform called Reddit, who decided to buy up a lot off the stock a lot of shares, partly because people hedge funds on Wall Street started short selling it. Okay, before we get into that, Joe, So I remember taking you to game stop when you were younger to buy you video games as kind of nostalgic appeal. Absolutely. And I think a lot of people my age in a little bit older grew up with Gamestop and I'm seeing a lot of people on platforms such as red It were saying isn't bye Bye Bye and Gamestop Two reasons one to make money, and the other was to stick it to the rich elite of the hedge funds. Hedge funds that have been betting against retro games stop by shorting its stock that is Now. In keeping with the retro theme, Alex suggested a retro product to visualize short selling. So here I've got an iPod, which I scrounged from somewhere in my basement, right, so on iPods kind of late game stop, it was very popular in the two thousands. And, you know it's not a bit obsolete because you know everybody's got music on their cell phones. So how do you short sell an iPod? So let's say I'm a hedge fund, and I think that the iPod is worth less than what it's being currently sold for. I go to you, Paul and I say, Can I borrow your iPod? So what I do is I sell the iPod that I just borrowed from you. And then buy it back for the future price. So if the price goes down, I make money because I'm basically getting the difference between that You just want me to lend it to you. I'm gonna borrow your your iPod. And I promise I'm gonna give you a little bit extra money whenever I return it. And to promise contractually to return my iPod by a certain date or whenever I ask for it back, So now you get wind of this short selling Joe. And what do you do? Okay. I grew up with this product. It's got a certain nostalgic value. I'm going to tell lots of my friends on social media may be read it to go out and buy iPod so we can all get in on the trend. What happens to you The hedge fund, Alex so because I Embedding that the price as actually going to go down in the future. If it ends up going up. I end up losing money because I have to buy it for Maura than what I sold it for initially and as you buy it, you're driving up the price even higher. Exactly, And that's what happened with game stop. $18 a share just last month. My grandson bought one share last Wednesday. And what price $293 I want to point out that I did not advise on this trade. I'm thinking that as more people are saying on social media that they're going to buy the value is going to go extremely high. Well is that I want to continue to stick it to the man, these people in Wall Street who have been running everything. And sure enough out on the street. I think it's great that rich people are losing money because capitalism is destroying this world. I look at the whole game stop with stocks is a revenge of the nerds. Kind of attack. This is one of the most complex attempts to coordinate on a single strategy that I think we've ever seen a sort of people's hedge fund says he must coordinating on the Reddit Forum. Wall Street bets. Urging one another to buy with rocket ship Emoji is which is to say, Look, this asset is going to keep going up so everybody should buy and toe hold with diamond hands. We are not going to break. We are going to keep the price up, and there's even a buy and hold sea shanty with diamond hands. They knew they profit if they could only hold But hold on most Wall Street. Hedge funds aren't short sellers. They bet on stock's going up. And in this case, some hedge funds have actually profited hugely from the so called revenge of the nerds, as have Robin Hood's paying customers, big investors, many of them hedge funds, who, by information from Robin Hood, about what people there are trading As for short sellers, are they bad actors? Sure, they bet against a parent losers like Gamestop, but also against frauds like the infamous end Ron, which short sellers helped take down nearly 20 years ago. By exposing its phony

We saw a couple of those others favored stocks cost to make headphones and bed bath and beyond both down as well the reality of what's happening here in these particular stocks. You're getting a lot of speculative relatively unreliable flows from new investors on people. Investing small amounts of money. They're always going to be a little bit choppy. There's going to be a lot of volatility in this market. The reality is that just doesn't give as much of a picture of where he starts to go whether they'll be up tomorrow. Downs murrow up in a month. Down in a month it's choppy because it's new and it's just very volatile. Well let's talk about volatility for a moment even though the markets have been doing well volatility has been. Hi yes so. That's been one of the interesting things about trading for the past year. In general i suppose volatility really show up in march last year around the peak of the pandemic panic but even for the rest of the markets have been climbing. You've seen those benchmarks. He s and p hitting new highs for example volatility measure volatility the vix index of people often use has remained very high certainly relatives the past three years or so. And that's largely because people just don't know where this is all going. I don't know where the government suppose going has been. Insurgencies around. Stimulus has been sentenced. He's around the public health stuff so when things pretty good overall the still a lot of unsaid sincere that's precisely what creates the volatility that mike byrd.
