'Deshaming' Challenging Moments for Your Child
"I have two ideas i wanna share de shaming and helping your child get ready for a challenging moment. Let's go through those. And i'll model some strategies along the way number one d shaming. What what does this even mean. Well inch enroll. Our kids are over well-named by our capability. Let's even think about the i. I don't know our of a kids day right when they wake up when they get dressed when they brush their teeth when they get their cereal ready when they think about the homework maybe they have to finish when they packed their bag when they have to remember to get a coat. All of these items are things that even eight-year-old really has to think through and probably messes up along the way. Meanwhile they see us already dress. They see that we're having our coffee. They see that we can reach everything in the cabinet even things they can't reach yet they hear us say. Hey you forgot your water bottle again clearly. Indicating that remembering something easy for us and yet difficult for them. There's no inherent problem here. We know well we're adults. We figured out a lot of things along the way but our kids don't know that and one of the reasons so many kids shutdown is not only because something is hard but they feel ashamed that something's hard because they feel alone in all the challenges of daily life. so how can we d- shame. This how can we add connection. How can we normalize having a hard time we can all. I think do a lot better modeling making mistakes and struggling. This can be something so simple. You do in front of your son. One day you could be zip. Bring up your cope and instead of doing it mindlessly and being successful struggle with it all the zipper so stuck still didn't work. okay. One second becky. Deep breath try again. I didn't do it yet. I know i can do this. Meanwhile your son is just kind of happening to witness this right. Even though of course you kind of knew. You're going to do this in front of him. You don't have to look at him. After and say see. Things are hard for me. Also actually i would say. Don't do that play a cool and just trust that. Your child is going to feel a little less alone the next time. Anything is a struggle for
COVID-19 Delta Variant Runs Rampant in the U.S.
"The delta varying it is more contagious K to ours. Peter Seymour joins us live from the news centre. Becky Valley Wise hospitals in Arizona have 12 Covid 19 patients Right now. We had one patient in the hospital 3.5 weeks ago that had covid 19 disease, so Certainly starting to see an increase again. Dr. Michael White and former CDC director Richard Bessler hope the slight surge doesn't mean worse things to come. If everyone were to get vaccinated with this vaccine, there'll be less virus spreading around less likelihood that there would be very in submerging that we would need a new vaccine for like a booster shot. Public health leaders and hospitals are still measuring The Delta variance mark in Arizona as coronavirus cases and hospitalizations remain steady. But Los Angeles County reports a spike of 3000 cases in the past three days. So who needs to be concerned any area where there's a lower rate of vaccination you're going to see spread, and it's going to vary by neighborhood here in New Jersey, where I am my community 76% of adults are fully vaccinated the next town over its 44% health leaders in L. A county. He blamed the unvaccinated who catch the delta variant in the valley. Dr. White believes that variant is making his dozen covid 19 patients sicker just here. Over the last few days, we're starting to see people that are presenting that are more acutely ill needing more intensive care. Last month, the unvaccinated made up 92% of Arizona's coronavirus cases. Dr White calls this all the more reason to take your covid 19 shots where we are now within the Covid 19 pandemic isn't a lot better place than we
Warren Buffett & Charlie Munger: Taking the High Road
"Warren buffett. And charlie munger have been business partners more than five decades. We were sort of made for each other. We've never had an argument in this whole time. We are strong minded in that time. The pair have built berkshires. Unique portfolio companies brands like the nsf. Railway geico duracell see's candies and basically left them alone. The way to get a good partner was to be a good partner and these are very effective ideas and they just work so fabulously well and they worked so well at berkshire. I caught up with squawk box. Anchor becky quick. Hi how are you. I'm good how are you over. Zoom about the buffett. Munger magic neither one of them ever really wanted to work for bosses or have a boss or work in corporate culture. They both said that they wouldn't survive it. They'd get fired. And i think that's why berkshire is the way that it is. They like to let people have their autonomy. They like to let the. They've got more than sixty businesses that they own outright and they let the managers run those businesses for a company that is now one of the ten biggest companies in the world by market capitalization. It's an incredibly decentralized organization. I mean there's twenty five people at the headquarters in omaha which by the way they don't even have a building that they run their corporate headquarters out of they. They lease a couple of floors from somebody else. And that's where the whole thing's run run from. If i were to tell you the details of this you'd think it was a scam. You know that. I'm going to tell you about one of the ten largest companies in the world. That's run out of these. Two floors in our mohammed. Twenty five people Okay yeah where. Where's the bridge that you want to sell me on top of that right.
The Problem With Praise
"Today. we'll be talking about praise. Praises actually kind of a tricky controversial topic because on the surface it seems like well. What's wrong with praise isn't praised gray. Who doesn't like praise where we're going to do here is look a little deeper because when our kids are younger what they're actually learning is how to generate good feelings about themselves. They're learning do good feelings about myself. Live in other people and those people deliver those feelings to me through praise and external validation or do good feelings live inside me. Can i generate those feelings myself in my mind. We really want to help our kids. Look in we want them to see the. They have good feelings about themselves. Even if nobody is commenting on what they're doing this is what leads to stable sense of self and self confidence rather than a sense of self or self confidence. That's actually dependent on approval of other people. Now let's be real. It always feels good to get approval or to get praise. There's no way around that. What i think we can imagine is a gap between how good. I'm able to feel in the absence of praise verses. How good. I feel in the presence of praise for our own mental health. We want the gap to be small not large. Here's what this would look like in real life. Let's say i'm working in an office. And i do a work project. I'm leaving the office. And i want to be able to say to myself. I know i worked really hard. I have my own evaluation of what i did. I know i'm proud of the product. I feel pretty good leaving the office today. Now let's fast forward a few hours. And i get an email from my boss. An email says while becky great job of course that feels good. That would feel good to anyone. But what's key is how good i felt before i got that email versus how good i felt after i got that email. We don't want that difference to be massive
Anti-Diet Movement Terminology: People in Larger Bodies
"I. i wanna talk about the phrase people in larger bodies. And then i'm actually going to define another term that i think is going to be helpful for understanding kind of the full import of this phrase so i people in larger bodies when those of us in the anti diet movement used this phrase. We're really using it as a value neutral way of saying that. Somebody's body is larger than the so-called normal range a hate that term even but the so-called normal range on the bmi chart. And that there's nothing morally or medically wrong with that right. So as i explained in the introduction to my book the words quote unquote overweight and quote unquote obese. I only use them in quotation marks. Because they have a really troubling history that is born out of oppressive beliefs about body size and these words really stigmatize people in larger bodies and treat body size like a disease which is actually likely to be more harmful to people's health than their weight itself and in fact wade itself is not quote unquote bad for health. The way we've been told in diet culture anyway. I talk about this all in a lot of depth in my book anti diet so definitely recommend checking that out for all that background so instead of using those oh words instead of using those stigmatizing terms i typically use the phrase people in larger bodies or higher weight people to emphasize the fact that body size is a neutral trait. The way we would say you know people with brown hair or taller people or whatever right and also to highlight the fact that we're all just temporary inhabitants of these bodies that we use to move around the world right we might be smaller bodies or larger ones but we'd all ceased to be here if it weren't for our bodies if it weren't for the fact that we are in these bodies using them to move around many of my friends and colleagues and the anti diet movement embrace the word fat as a neutral descriptive for their own body size. And you'll hear me use that term with them on this podcast when you know the my guests on the podcast or my sources in the book self. Identify that way in. It's in the spirit of the fat acceptance movement and fat liberation. That we use that
South Africa Tightens Restrictions to Fight Resurgent Virus
"Vaccine against the beater variant, first identified in South Africa. The less good news is that covid infections in South Africa. Are again going up, leading to President Cyril Ramaphosa announcing new restrictions. Focus is on limiting social contacts while preserving The economy and preserving livelihoods. The peak of this third wave looks set to be higher than the previous two waves. The first wave. If we recall lasted 15 weeks, the second wave lasted Nearly nine weeks. We don't know how long this one will last. But indications are that it could last longer. Well, let's talk to me in Milan, editor of of Chief of Becky sees a center for health journalism in South Africa Welcome to news Day Quite an alarming comment there from Cyril Ramaphosa. Tell us what is going on with this third wave. Yes, our third wave. As a president said. It looks like it will be worse than both our 1st and 2nd waves. At the moment, it's largely concentrated in how thing which is the province way most of the business and happen in South Africa. It's where Johannesburg is situated. About 60% of infections have new infections happen in Johannesburg and in helping at the moment and because the, um the pandemic is starting to move so fast, and we now have restrictions like our president mentioned and it's quite strict. It's all gatherings have been banned since last night. So it started this morning. Restaurants are no longer allowed to save sit down bills, and we have a curfew from nine o'clock in the evenings to four o'clock in the mornings, and importantly and schools will close. By the end of this week. All schools need to be closed and the sale of alcohol has been prohibited. This is the third time that we have an alcohol sales spin. South Africa is a country with a very strong drinking culture. And when hospitals get overloaded, and we bend the sale of alcohol, and it reduces the number of drama related cases in hospitals to open updates for covert. The other, really bad thing that happened is that we have the delta very in now, that seems to be spreading
Me and You Versus the Problem: Making Your Child a Partner
"Wanna talk about something to almost visualize together. And i think it'll be applicable to so many situations outside bath also. We need to notice whether we're in the mode of it's me against my kid more. It's me and my kid against a problem. So i know for me. It's really easy in the situation with all my child's running away from me. Oh my child's not listening. And maybe i'm not saying it but what i'm thinking is my child's a problem. Why is my child such a problem right and our kids feel like that right and i'm sure your marriage to the two of you know whether you're talking about a problem to each other in a way where it's like. You're the problem. Can't you just be more like me or can't you just fix it versus. Hey exactly our spouses are always the problem. Why don't they just become more like us so annoying. I think that's number one to notice that mode so to me. Interacting with jada in a way where jada the problem would sound like this jada is bad. It's bad this is crazy. You're going to get a snack. We talked about this a million times. Come on its bath. I can do that really well. This is how. I usually approach my kids the first time and then i catch myself right and they'll say well. I'm doing my kids. A problem thing verses talking agenda in a way where it's me and jada against a problem might even be before. I go into the door and i'd say you know what i'm thinking about. It's going to be back time. And here's something about bath time after school with me. I know you don't love it. I'm wondering if there's anything we can do to make this a little easier. Because here's something that's not going to change. Were not going to change doing bad i. It's just not one of the things but there are so many things we could change right so before we go further. There's a week right now. Me and jada getting to the bath is a problem like we both probably have some part in that dance rate so rather than seeing it as a jada problem. It's something that's happening between us. It's not even that i really. I don't think it's your fault either. I just think something gets co created when our relationship then to me. Whenever i approach my kids like that somehow i find my playfulness right in my first example. There's no playfulness. It's just like come on. Stop running away. You're you're doing this. It's just so frustrating. Actually when we're in a me versus use situation with someone. there's never any playfulness. Our bodies can't find playfulness when we feel antagonistic. Toward someone because we actually feel like there's a threat right and we can only be playful when we feel safe and safety often comes with connection right so i could see if this is you jessica yu saying this to her toward the door and what might make it more fun pause so many times our kids will actually generate solutions or ideas when we include them as a
Caller Factually Reports Joe Biden and His Son as White Supremacists
"And his son. I mean, look what they've said about blacks. Um Joe was hanging out with the Klansmen and the segregationists in in the Senate. He signed a bill to lock up non violent black offenders were mostly You know, black drug dealers, and, um so why not them? Some girl, you know, Becky, That's a fascinating point. I mean, what? Everything You said there is factually correct. I know the leftist listen to you. Becky are very disturbed right now. And the W male regional left this list listening or like, Oh, my gosh. That's a conspiracy theory. But everything Becky just said folks. Is absolutely accurate. Becky. I appreciate the call. He did. In fact, Joe Biden. Eulogized a KKK member. You could go look at the pictures yourself. Folks just put it in the search engine, Robert Byrd. I saw it. Was working that detail that day when Barack Obama went there, there's pictures of it. I was there. I saw the whole thing. KKK member. Amazing How many Democrats where they're celebrating this man? No, but he has a past the very well No, no, no. No one else is allowed to have a pass. It's not what cancer culture says it's not the rules. She's also correct in her assertion that Joe Biden's son was dropping the N word in a bunch of text to a friend. Yeah, that's true, too. That is, in fact, absolutely accurate. Nothing, Becky said. There is false. Those would be the characteristics you would think would be associated with real cases
Boston Celtics: Becky Hammon and Kara Lawson Are Ideal HC Fits
"The celtics per soccer practice facility in boston this billboard went up campaigning for becky hammon or terra lawson to be the next head coach again. Keira has worked on the celtics staff. She is just fantastic. Monico who do you think is the best bit to code the celtics. I don't necessarily have a name yet right. Although i liked the connection that care has but i have three cs. Candidates should have they've got to be able to connect with this squad. They got to be creative in the offense and the talents of these guys and they've obviously got to be able to convert in terms of everything that they're doing practice. I'm behind the scenes. Has the translate on the basketball court. Care i kind of liked that idea so this answer. I am no way shape before trying to take this coach away from the current currency. Which is nate. Mcmillan from. The atlanta hawks. Because i think the hawks likely will try to keep him. But i think what mcmillan has proven and shown what he can do with trae young. Just imagine what he could do. Because he's defensive money he has all the pieces. He has all the young talent offensively. Mcmillan would be good candidates as well as becky hammon. I think hammond that she can handle a team. I think she won the something. Many years back spurs obviously and she took control. That team did a great job. So i mean. I think there's some great candidates out there ought always chauncey billups after-sale. Who's put his time in as well. But i think make is showing that he can handle superstars and and take them to the next level. If the hawks don't take him snatching maybe it's up
How to raise your kids not to be codependent
"First comes to mind for me is really thinking together about codependency. That word is used so much. So let me share. What i think about when i think about that word to me. Codependency is a way of determining your wants your needs your feelings based on another person as opposed to based on your sense of yourself so as opposed to knowing what do i want. What do i need. What am i thinking right now. How am i feeling now to be clear. We don't always get what we want or need. But i'm talking about knowing it as opposed to knowing it to others for what they seem to want to give you or what feelings they recognize as valid. And then you kind of back into your own feelings and wants and needs from others. What's important also. Is i think we don't delete able people as codependent or not dependent to me that just creates this binary that feels very filled with shame so i think we should think about what kind of ways of interacting with our kids would lead to more versus fewer codependent traits. One of the things we have to really pay attention to when our kids are young and their bodies are getting wired for how they see the world and how they see themselves is whether we're focused on what's happening for them inside that's leading to their behavior or whether we look at their behavior for the impact it has on us when our kids are young and even as kids get older like you mentioned both times we want to help our kids look in not because we want them to be selfish this actually. It doesn't make them selfish but the more they're able to reflect about what is going on for me. How was i feeling what came up for me. That may be surfaced. In this way the more they actually have more control over their feelings and want so that they can be present to be there for other people to be empathic and to kind of show up as good citizens in the
Birdy on New Album "Young Heart"
"Thanks for being with us. We're really happy to ask you about young carts. Very solid sessoms. We thought thank you. It's nice when you can hear the chords in the melody. It's not just a load of production. You know yeah. It's that kind of returned to my roots of it. Can on the darker got really dramatic and then come back to my reads but this one and it seems like you've gone into more personal direction with this one. Then you have before. Would you agree with that. I think this is the fast one pretty conflict dubbed into my experiences and things say young on the other albums. i didn't really have up to write about. This is definitely the most passing so far. And you spend some time up in nashville didn't you. yeah. I spent a lot of time writing london at the beginning. Which didn't really go to our. I think it was really ready to be writing. Had two quite bad right spoke at the beginning about my relationship ended at the beginning regretted to write about it. So as in lots of sessions an china make it work. And i had that survey is i think i just need some time and also i've been working since can fourteen an album of the album and touring. I think i just needed like a break. Becky garo kind of lucky gap. Guess faster to endure. And how backstory months there with my sister. My cousin i was kind of just like wanted. Forget about everything and not worry about anymore. Which did me a lot of good. And then i came back and got really inspired by jd. Mitchell for the first time because it never got into it for some reason. I had it but they hadn't gotten into. Maybe it was heartbreak which is my age and so if that like actually was the fast place to go because it took on this. Kind of like laurel canyon can feel and so i got over success. I was feeling really good about the album. The and then to nashville to dismiss him because it just felt like it was a real kind of songwriter. You covered the stories to be ready. Beach the inflect with some writers and is really amazing. Everyone plays every instrument such a higher standard. I felt really another this amazing.
A Liberal at Liberty With Kevin Roose
"On this season of in god we lost. We heard from a number of students who attended liberty university. Were they trained to be champions for christ. It looks like this beautiful kind of wonderland for young conservative christians. Everyone was so friendly and just like constantly nice. The university's leader jerry. They went from one hundred hundred and fifty million net assets and two thousand sixty seven to nearly a billion in two thousand twelve and turned it into a can't miss destination for national conservative politicians. Arizona Secretary of State Says GOP-Audited Machines Must Be Replaced
"Votes, Arizona Secretary of State tells Maricopa County It will need new elections equipment after the audit custody needs be retained by the election officials and that clearly didn't happen in this case. Katya ours, Peter say more joins us live from the news center with the story. Becky, the state's elections manual says on Lee certified county elections officials can keep custody of tabulation machines lost the minute those machines were turned over to the Senate and to their contractors, Katie Hobbs says her observers were not allowed to see what side Burnin just did with the equipment and there's no life feed on it, she tells supervisors. Replacing it could cost $6 million shouldn't be new information to them. We brought this issue early on in the process. Hobbs doesn't think she could re certify the equipment or fix or rebooted if damaged by the August 2022 primary elections process is not comprehensive enough. You fully rehabilitated any compromise equipment or provide enough assurance that the equipment is still safe to use in a statement? Maricopa County says Cyber Ninjas still holds 385 tabulate Ear's, but they will not be used quote unless the county state and vendor are confident that there is no malicious hardware or software installed on the devices. 15 months out from the August primary left 14 months out from where equipment has to be Tested for the actual election. The replacement of this equipment is gonna be time consuming and what we needed the county to know is that if the county intends to redeploy any of the subpoenaed equipment over what they lost custody and control, then our office would need to consider the certification proceedings of the equipment. Why It’s Important for Our Kids To Develop Frustration Tolerance
"We can only regulate the feelings we allow ourselves to have. So let's use that. I feel angry toward by sibling. Sometimes we feel so angry. A sibling in that moment. What feels allowed us is. I wish i didn't even have a sister rain. I think we hear these things right. As if that's the whole truth it's just in the moment right and let him. I hate you when they go. Hey i hate you right. So what happens to say i hate you. I'm always what that's just the tip of the iceberg. What led to that moment. I felt frustrated. I felt something i wanted. Got ruined by you right. Probably if the first steps of regulating is allowing ourselves to have a feeling the narrative of i should be feeling pleasant feeling instead of the feeling. I'm feeling is one of the biggest things that gets in our way of learning to regulate the feeling because we can't regulate a feeling we tell ourselves we're not supposed to have so if i feel frustrated and the narrative is get to grateful. Get to grateful. Where's the grateful. Where's the grateful. Should only feel grateful now. Not only do. I not know how to regulate the frustration. But i'm adding shame blame to that frustration. Because it's an awful feeling to feel of feeling in your body that you think you shouldn't be feeling like oh my body is working against me. What's wrong with me. That's the what's wrong with me. Narrative right so i think a really powerful re frame for parents is especially with siblings. Is i don't want my kids have only positive feelings toward their sibling. I want them to get pretty good at understanding and regulating the tougher feelings. They have because then. Actually those feelings won't act themselves out as much in behavior our feelings our forces. I always like to imagine it that way. And what that means is if we don't know how to regulate a feeling and don't feel like it's okay to have that feeling inside of us if a feeling is a force than literally has to explode out of us as a behavior are behaviors. The not doing this and you're can't build with me. Even though i hate you is to me assign. Oh there was some feeling that felt too big and too unmanageable inside. That it had to explode
Trans & Jewish World-Building - Becky Silverstein, Laynie Solomon
"You just tell us a little bit about the project and what. That's all about also do you pronounce trans-hub project or trans halacha project pronunciation question cellini. We get their abbot. Even before we jump in on what the project is maybe will it. Just define our terms here right. Maybe we'll just define trans and then we'll pass it over to laney to pronounce undefined For us so what does it mean that. This is a trans project. Had we define trans for ourselves. And i think this is a definition to that one can use in the wider world right. Where trans or transgender is used as an umbrella term for anyone who knows themselves to be a gender that's different than the gender. They were assigned at birth. Folks may be like gender assigned at birth. What does that mean. is this a thing. We still do our world and of course it is right like people give birth. We look at the baby's we look at their genitalia. And we say it's a boy it's a girl and assign a particular gender based on those primary sex characteristics and then we started a forest fire. That's right and then we start a forest fire on. That actually happens a few months before birth when we're announcing the child's gender even before they're born and to be honest i'm so done with the conversation about gender reveal parties by never have to hear about another one. It would be amazing. Ya dan you know. Yeah and so. We know that when people say it's a boy or girl that folks as they're growing up and moving through the world sometimes they're like oh these words boy girl That are constructed at in the cultures in which we grow up at. Don't actually feel right to us. They don't match my internal sense itself. Those folks may choose to identify as transgender. So this is a project of the trans halacha project focused on the experience of transgender people. And it's a project facilitated by and largely participated in by by transport as well.
Are Tantrums Normal?
"There are some key things. I wanna talk about that kind of form. The frame in which we see a tantrum and actually the framework with which we understand tantrum has the biggest impact because it determines what types of strategies and interventions will even think of so a couple of ideas. First tantrums are normal. I would even go so far as to say tantrums are healthy. And the fact that you're saying your toddler is in some ways tougher than your baby. This makes a lot of sense to me when our kids get into toddler hood they develop a deep sense of what they want and yet they get no lot. They can't have ice cream for breakfast. They can't have every single block when they're playing with a friend and so to want something strongly and not be able to get that. That's one of the more difficult human experiences at any age. So two three four five year olds. Of course they have a hard time dealing with these moments tantrums. In my mind right. Tantrums are biological states of this regulation. Tantrums are not willful acts of disobedience and that to me is key. So what do i mean by that. Tantrums are moments where kids are overwhelmed by the feelings and sensations in their body and even literally picture this right now feelings sensations that are really uncomfortable and there bubbling up and they're bubbling up. And then guess what happens when kids feel overwhelmed by them. They explode out like a volcano in when that happens it comes out in our fingers in our hands in our legs in our mouth in screams in hits. It's a child's way of saying. I am overwhelmed by everything happening inside of me. These feelings are scary to me. Please help me feel safe again.
Lifelong Superfan Gets Paid to Write Disney Blog
"That he has always been passionate about disney ever since she took her first trip to disney world. When she was ten she fell in love with theme park and started saving money to go back in fact she began writing her own personal guidebook and she kept returning over and over throughout the next decade and even chose disneyworld as the location for her honeymoon since so much of her life was connected to this happy place. Becky decided she would share her passion publicly fresh out of grad school. She had just gotten a job. As a children's librarian. The work was ideal. It was what she wanted to do but the salary was fairly low and she had student loans to repay. She'd already been writing for other websites on all things. Disney and realize that can make a lot more sense if she had her own platform that she could control with these two reasons in mind. Becky started her blog. Disney in your day. This was back in two thousand thirteen when there weren't nearly as many blogging resources. There are now so. Becky had to figure out how to set up her own platform. "Remember what my life used to be like. So it's so heartbreaking and fill is the person who took becky away from coal from Susan from Bobby from everyone who loved her. And what's interesting is that I try to do. A deep dive to figure out who this guy is is but the truth is many details about him remain very very elusive. We know that he spent a lot of time in prison. Over the years which I'm sure as a contributing factor to me not being able to find much about him I did re read that Phil had been a licensed vocational nurse in Texas until he lost losses. Licensed in two thousand six. which is three years after becky was murdered by him and in terms of what I can find about him on the Internet there? There isn't much I did find one article detailing arrest at age eighteen. Where he's still in one thousand nine hundred one Ford Mustang from Johnny Williams Ford in Texas and any lit on fire? We do know that he was married at least once to Becky's Ex's cousin we know he's now a born again Christian. We know he's going to rot in prison. And we know he's a murderer who stole becky from her family and her friends and while some have taken becky they keep her alive within them. Almost everything That I remember from Becky had colon it He was a major part of her life. She was she was such a fun kid. No matter what it kind of predicament. She was in. I mean like I said she was. She had a lot of financial stuff but she was always positive No this is something but also coming around the corner and this is GonNa be good And she brought out the positivity and other people around her to it was not you know how success it was like. WELL WE'RE GONNA get out She did have a great laugh. I can hear it still. She always thought of the positive. I there's no doubt that when you're close to something like this it changes you. I wouldn't say that I am more skeptical the people I mean. I guess I'm I'm a septic skeptical of people anyways. I am a huge lover of all things crime but I also even to this day. I still believe leave that you know. The majority of the people in the world are good and yes. They're going to be those people out there but the majority of the people are good. I genuinely trust a lot of people it has made me. I know that whenever I was being interviewed by the police it was but also I look at coach those relationships is there a little more important. And you don't WanNa take those for granted he don't WanNa take any any relationship that you have for granted because you don't know when it's going to be on so in a case this layered and complex and one that goes over the span of ten ten years. There are a lot of questions to be had in terms of the investigation. In this case in particular there are a couple of really glaring perplexing elements in one is the purse right and as Phil confessed to the entire crime and was pretty. I believe honest about everything that you're talking about. He didn't have any idea about that purse. He didn't know how it got back into the house. So that's so weird thing because apparently the family and friends tore apart that house trying to look for it because she always put a person the same little cabinet spot. It was gone John and then it was their months later and I think but can we believe him because he came back a second time to hide evidence maybe he took it with them initially. Maybe he brought it back. Maybe he was conflicted about keeping it. Maybe wanted a trophy. Maybe he's not that sick. Maybe he's like this personal sink me. I needed to put it back because bobby sounded so sure that they tore it apart. The police came in the desert for Prince. They tore it apart. It sounds odd to me in a one bedroom. Mm apartment the purse you can find. I mean if you guys decide to go down the robin halt. There are pictures of this purse. It looks more like a little duffel bag. It's not small Ya yeah. It's not usually overlook cylindrical. It's not a tiny. I don't see how a one bedroom apartment that could have happened unless it was put back it was put back. Yes but there's no chance it wasn't no of course it's just weird to be for somebody to actually come clean with everything for you. Know whatever reason. Yeah he's doing it and then to just be like I didn't do the guy didn't put it back. But what would it matter if you put it back or not. In the grand scheme you of what is conviction would be because his his propensity to lie is so strong I mean call the cops ten years later and said I want to pass us. Then they come and he says this overdose story because he's trying to say that I've turned over to my faith but he's still shame he's like half is the third visit where he masturbated in the place or something and he's just knocking to admit to put the purse back. He's just still he doesn't want to accept how how evil and sick he is no bottomline. We knew it was Phil. Oh yeah bottom line. No doubt about that. The person mystery. It's odd in a second mystery. Is the timeline because we talked about. It's not a mystery. It's just luck for him. Because we talked about. Bobby's call call at eleven pm with Becky. We're Phil was there. The first time we'll fill had just been kicked out or been kicked out it's been kicked out. Yes and then will will who has been cleared. As no implication in this set at one thirty he left a note and Cole was alone. Then becky's Recchi's ex boyfriend who she was rekindling with who they were starting to be romantically involved again. Had A missed call former at two am no reason ally who knows Knows there are some questions. Yeah it's a little bit bad cases that drag on ten years often the initial investigations are not done as carefully That would have been an easy question to answer back then really hard now In police departments aren't perfect. I I mean becky wasn't a perfect kid. They had lots of reasons. I'm sure to be like she disappeared or she she'll be back soon and you don't necessarily go over everything with a fine tooth comb until you know for sure right so I don't think anyone's evil here other than mckellar but these things happen all all right. "Phil was now forty one at this point Phil was incarcerated again. It was serving a fourteen year sentence and the Missouri Department of Corrections for a Jasper County. Bank robbery so the police. I went to see him and he started off coy and he was on his same bullshit and he was giving conflicting stories. This or that. But the COPS. CBS kept him talking. And if somebody keeps talking you still have a chance. You want to keep them talking and eventually elite Phil talked enough. Details began coming out and with the police. Ask Phil why he reached out to them. He said was his faith. He said he had the desire to serve Christ and whether he did it in prison walls or outside it didn't matter he still wants to serve Christ so fells. First story was A lukewarm one foot in one foot in one out confession so what he said was that he had previously been involved in a sexual relationship with becky. Prior to the night she went missing and was at her house parting with her. On the night she disappeared. And you said she died because she overdosed and the police knew he was giving half truths and accepting some lame but not really copying to exactly what he'd done at this point it's been ten years. It's been ten years of misery for the families. Ten Years of wasted resources from law enforcement ten years of bullshit. They were pissed they were. They decided to indict him for first degree murder and he'd be facing the death penalty if he was convicted after going to trial. This is oh happening in remember. Bobby Bobby is still the last person who spoke to Becky but it had been ten years. There's no answers in your force to move on. Not You never forget you never lose love for but the missing. It's purgatory and you cannot move on with your life. In when she did hear about this it would hit her. Like a ton of bricks. I moved moved on And Not saying that. I forgot because I didn't I still have a necklace with her. Birth down hanging in my car To this day it stays with me. It stayed with me for different vehicles and anybody who has been in my life for awhile knows about one day I my step. Mom called me Dan. She said Bobby you have there was a police officer here looking for you. They have their serving you and I was like they're serving me. which what and she's like? I don't know they wouldn't tell me address and they're coming to serve you know it's like Oh my God like freaking out like I had no idea what was happening and like I didn't do anything wrong. What's going on? I am actually contacted the police department where I live and they had actually not given given the papers yet and so I called the police department where my parents live. So they're like. Oh Yeah we we are. We are serving you and I was like well. What's what what are you have to come here so I went to the police station? And they're like here and it was. It was subpoena To justify and I was like Oh my God brought so many memories back and it was Because they had been searching Fermi for a month I was supposed to be in court in three days to testify at insult to punctuate the fact that bobby didn't. I didn't even know that Philip had been arrested. Then suddenly she's supposed to be in Branson in three days to testify so magin processing all this information these emotions and really really looking at Philip and realizing like you killed my best friend and how in what she was thinking about in terms of Ham You took away from somebody with your hands so all of you know so many emotions going once once I found out and once I gathered even more information about this man to her. Yeah and there wasn't any time it was like well. You have to come to Branston by now. I was like okay. Let me get somebody to cover me at work So she goes to her hometown to testify in the murder or case of her best friend and the DA's tactic worked and Phil started talking in exchange for a deal. They would downgrade his charges to second degree murder in exchange range. For telling the truth and sparing the Sutton family an entire trial so he started talking and Bobby was already halfway to Branson for the trial when he started talking so she got an interesting phone call. I was on my way down there and I made a about halfway down and she. He called me introduce that he played. You don't have to come foot. Call my God. This is crazy like you have put me through the most most emotional rollercoaster that anybody has ever been in in a matter of five hours thankfully bobby was spared Facing fill in court. Because I can't imagine how difficult that would be given what's happened. I was happy that he was caught. I was mad that they they had gone on too long. I was God that that she was gone. Because it brought back every single motion that you had but I had whenever the Davis she came up missing. And you know things emotions that I hadn't thought about And again not that. I hadn't thought about her but they don't think about those same emotions until something significant like that happens and that brought back every emotion than I ever ever had during that whole process of kind of find her but then I was so angry that this guy had waited ten years to confessed and unlike what kind of monster are Jozy you just let somebody family and friends and son just go on with life without knowing why why incest person why was their mom. Why was their daughter? Why was their friend? I me being the person that I am. I catch you research. Everything everything about him. Everything I wanted to see a picture. I wanted to see what his face looks like. And the first picture that I came up it was like a mugshot of him like an orange jumpsuit and he you were smiling and I just wanted to reach the computer and strangle him at myself because it was just disgusting I think he's evil And whether at the drug made him evil or whether that be he's evil incarnate He's evil I don't think he's sick. I you know. I don't Disgusting Human During Phil's confession. He admitted that he had never been involved in a sexual relationship with becky and he went went to her apartment that night with hopes of getting high and having sex with her when she rejected him he strangled her in a fit of rage on her bed. And this is all as coal well. Her son slept just a few feet away and he said that he removed Becky's body from her apartment and he plays the body in his car is vehicle then he drove around for a period of time and he eventually disposed Becky's body under this rock rock outcropping in built a wall. Yeah he he gathered these rocks and he used them to cover the body and create a barrier. And if you ever if you see eh the pictures of this crazy of this rock formation. It's almost like when you see in colonial times like the way that they built rock building. Yeah Yeah but it's so strange because it's so meticulous but it's so obvious. Yeah they if you do see the picture. It's it's like they're pleased so perfectly on top of each other like it's Brex odd exaggerating more attention either way. Let's get back to Phil's confession. What was he saying silly? We went to Becky's apartment and he took off the sheets. He took a pillow and he took off the pillow. Top mattress and any other items. They were inside the residence that might contain his DNA his hairs or whatever but it. It became obvious that this is where he did. The crime was right there in after he went to Becky's for the second time he drove back to Branson and cleaned his car of any. The evidence in through the floor mats from his car into a dumpster lit the mattress. And she's on fire at a construction site. He then admitted to fabricating the Entire Story Story about quote Unquote Scotty. who was just a figment of his imagination? Phil has told varying stories and while it will never truly be known exactly what happened. He does admit to murdering her and he said that he been attracted to Becky ever since his cousin in law dated her. It begs the question. How did this happen which thinking back now back super frustrated like hello? I just gave you a name and this person has called you and the person in has been in inner. Be You know the interview by you guys and you did nothing. You couldn't let two together but you know I'm not after please fill pleaded guilty. To second-degree murder Becky's family was present. You received thirty years. He said at his sentencing unquote I grieve constantly because of my actions I don't WanNa blame it on the drugs but the anger and bitterness comes out in ways you don't expect I never expected take someone's life and when he received a sentence he said quote there right. I deserve the Max and I deserve this. The only thing I can do now seek seek mercy from God you know it did allow you to close the chapter. Unfortunately you don't ever forget about it How can you ever really close a chapter on a friend who'd died that Choon in life And by those you know under those circumstances I don't I don't know because I don't think that that's ever closer. She didn't die but it was somebody else who took her life. Yes it was disclosure but in a sense no I mean there's there's always gonna be that you know what could have been would have gotten married. I mean would she have seen cold. Oh grow up would be you know have gone on to become you know she wanted to be You know Early Childhood advocation. She wanted to go into early childhood education. And so would that have been coming. Issue would have followed I don't know according according to court documents in a prepared statement. And this is going to devastate you becky son Cole. Who is to win? Miss Mom went missing and it was at this point almost thirteen and he said quote. Everyone is told me how wonderful my the mom was and it makes me upset that I don't remember.

"Responsible has lasted a year as well. Tonight the clues. Her mother hopes will help capture the killer. Something knows something out there. Somebody knows how they're sleeping. Two years after her daughter disappeared and one year after her body was found here along creek in Bradley. Ville Susan Sutton still wants the the truth and while Becky's family still didn't know who was responsible for taking her life they finally got to bury her in May of two thousand four. Becky was laid to rest cemetery in Alton Illinois or other family members were also buried. Everyone involved in this case knew this was a homicide aside and despite that over year for Becky's mother to get her daughter's death certificate which indicated or cause of death so the medical examiner in this case noted the cause of death as probable as fixation due to strangulation. There were no stab wounds. No gunshots no catastrophic damage to her bones or skull fractures pictures and based on how long are skelton had been in the elements that me could not determine whether or not drugs or alcohol played any role in her. You know they said a sixty -ation due to strangulation and so we were like well. Why and that was actually left out of a lot of different reports and so I didn't actually know about that until after after we had buried her at the time? They said they didn't know now if you look at articles because 'cause little tribulation which we know was a case but when we did find out that was my gosh no because how somebody strangle her and then you know all those things come come up like get hurt did it. Was You struggling to see you know how do you how does she not wake up coal. 'cause he's let her you know maybe we'll thank God actually didn't wake up call because then you know maybe call it that cue who knows. His Maniac was vintage tour. So yeah it was hard to hear that she had died of strangulation days turned into weeks weeks to months months in two years loved ones. Becky's had passed out. Thousands of flyers rallied for news coverage conducted vigils and Mr Every single day the original officers on the case where burdened by it. Not Being solved but they were simply just out out of leads and out of ways to really implicate fell and that's when the hollister police get a call that they were really not expecting. It was March arch two thousand thirteen ten years after becky went missing nine years since her body was found and guess who was calling the police..

"That was frustrating. Like why don't you know you're an integral part of the case in the beginning. Why do you not know anything? Three more months pass before police get any other useful information formation and then in September of two thousand and three a witness contacted the hall police and told them that Phil had come to our house and talked about Becky with her. He made statements to her that implied that he was Becky's apartment when she died. However Phil said that the person who killed Becky was a friend of his name? discography interesting soul told her that after school killed Becky he took her body and hit it. Where no one whatever find it I didn't know that So I didn't know what to think because I had so many different ideas. Yes ideas coming from the police. And then her mom and then other friends The friends I knew it was like you know we shared Like I said I. I didn't run the different circles of people that she did But Yeah I had some friends that did so. Well what about this first. I and what about this person and Eventually I remember getting called into the station. And they're like. Hey you know guy named scooby and I'm like I have no idea who you're talking about. Take back our number one time setback. Because she was he was there with her at the time. They said that they had multiple people telling about security. All right so this is kind of a big development and they need to speak to fill and confront him with this and this this whole Scotty scenario but they look for fill and they learned that he was actually incarcerated in Texarkana which is in Texas for an unrelated offense and when police actually finally tracked him down fill didn't deny knowledge knowledge of this story but he didn't want to answer any questions. He refused about Scotty about the situation Everything and the police with this information. They started searching for Scotty but there were no records that could ever be found for a person person using that name using that nickname using that alias and the police believe that Phil actually was there guy. But they still didn't have what they needed to prosecute prosecute him but they were comforted by the fact that he was behind bars. At least for the time being becky's friends and family members don't really know anything that's going on. This is all going on behind the scenes. I don't even know if I can really put it into words. How so? There's definitely that sadness and fear of what what happened to her and and is he okay and you know you really. Do you look different places. New Crowd here. You look whenever you go past ditches riches and stuff like and I see her body somewhere which is such a strange feeling. You never think that you're gonNA look for a person and I feel it's definitely a surreal feeling but also there thank you know you can't you can't mourn because she's not gone she may come. Come back you almost feel like you do have to mourn her because she's not there While there were many unanswered questions about where becky was how she was doing and what she was doing. You're an elderly man Tanny County and he said that a relative of his had found you mean remains in the Mark Twain National Forest and they asked him about this and the man refused to talk about who this relative tip was didn't want to implicate his relative and he actually didn't know where the remains were exactly so this is a huge area. The forest is gigantic and it's not easy to locate organic matter bones in an area so vast so they start looking but six weeks later they find a skeleton stuffed into a rock overhang in the national forest near this unpaved. CBS logging road and this road is one of the few unpaved roads that a left in the area. It'd be impassable for for the average car but the road is actually well known to deer hunters and those who use it for four Willie. An audit glanced lanced. Police couldn't even tell whether the skeleton belonged to a man or a woman and this particular area was about thirty five miles or Becky had originally disappeared from and while they couldn't deduce whether this was a homicide by simply looking at the remains they were able to based on the meticulous way that these remains were actually hidden. Someone literally built a wall of stones and sealed off a small rock overhang which is like a very shallow cave with a broad wide opening. It's very obvious at this place. There wasn't just by happenstance and the police suspected that this could be becky but they needed to do testing to be sure Her mom it called me and said they found remains that they think is becky and then I remember her asking you. Do you remember if she had a belly button ring. That looks like this. I'm GONNA say right now is in every single thing that you will find it says that it Max the belly button ring that she would have worn and it gives you. That was one of our things that like. I never knew her to wear a belly button. Ring like this yes. She had her belly button pierced. But she always kind of one of those curves hoops and not like a ring with like a dangling thing on it which is what they Out and that was one of the things like well. That's not her. It's not her if this is it and also She said well. They didn't find her ring that she wore on her right hand. which which would have been the hands that was closest to the inside of that? outcropping show. That was geared. "Like it's just genuinely confusing. I mean anger but like I'm just like why why hadn't becky Joe's mom mailed the letters and why she told the girls that Letitia had actually phone that day that that is not my memory of what happened I reach out to becky and JOE's mom Julia to ask her. Memory of the day is foggy but she does not remember getting a call from Letitia as I remember it. I just got a call aw from someone at school saying nobody came to pick up your kids and that felt like the worst thing I had ever done in letting my kids down. Julia also doesn't remember being given any letters to mail regardless. She wouldn't have been mailing them in the first place. She says Joe Knew where the Stamps Chore was. Julia remembers the time of letitia employment as one of worry and stress. She was producing about a half a dozen film projects at the time and and was always exhausted. She had long hours during the week and on weekends. She read the scripts that arrived at her doorstep in a huge pile. I didn't feel like like I had to apologize to my girls for having a career but I did see that they kind of resented it and I could I could understand and why because it did take me away from them. Julia herself understands what it means to grow up with an absent mom her own mother was in New York talent agent who was always distracted with work and handed her off to a series of housekeepers and I had my own memories what I resented like my mother did not get up in the slate and so she didn't get up in the morning when my brother and I went to school so our lunches were always made by housekeeper. I just remember remember wishing that my mother had made my lunch herself. When I became a mom I think I hoped I would do better but I when I got there myself. I saw how hard it was but she was always sure to make the girls launches herself taking care to drop a a note in Saint. She was thinking of them that she loved them. As for the other household chores it seems like a lot of that fell to the young women she hired for Julia being responsible for the cooking and cleaning while working more than full time job was too hard and it was made even harder by an agreement struck with her husband has been D- early on in their marriage my husband I mean it was clear he never he never wanted kids as much as I did and he I think he loved them once they got out here but it was my deal and I was fully one hundred percent responsible for all child care duties and everything everything and that was something that was a bit of a problem in my marriage which ultimately and ended in divorce. Julia says when she envisions Becky and Joe Sitting on the school lawn embracing as the sky turn dark. She can't help but remember the day she sat her daughters others down to tell them that she and her dad were divorcing becky was eighteen by then. Joe twenty-two Julia remembers them holding onto each other while she broke the news well Julia thought at least they've got each other and I felt like they're together. They're going to be okay.

Joe Looks at Leticia again. She struggles to ask the thing she really wants to know. Why didn't you ever respond to me but before she has to come out and say it the tissue jumps in I didn't get any hotter. I never received any letters. She's not even sure of Letitia last name name which is why Becky is chosen to wade into that swamp of collective selective memory known as the family storage unit. There's only so much time I could spend just like because I know how many rats in the storage unit isn't lit and Becky forgot her flashlight at home so she uses the light on our phone to scope out the room inside or boxes piled the top each other containing years and years worth of old school assignments. VHS tapes and birthday cards from barely remembered family friends up in here. I don't think twenty years old. She's here to find Joe's childhood address book. I was a kid the way that some people might collect autographs. She collected addresses is so every time she met some anew. Joe Would scrawl their address into a little book with a Hologram dog on the cover. Becky is hoping the book contains Letitia Full Name mm-hmm and didn't address any clues to help begin the search digging around in the dim lights becky okay fines one of Joe's old journals with entries dated from around the time of Letitia. A painting of a boat on the coffee table sets a pipe. Does your mom smoke a pipe. No just a conversation piece but worth every penny because as the tour draws tune in the conversation. Shen begins the story all started becky says a few months ago while dining at an Italian restaurant with her parents and older sister Joe. We were at my birthday dinner. My whole family was there. Mom Dad Becky's mom and dad are divorced so the whole family rarely gets together like like my parents their cordial but like it's really birthdays. They're Chitchat proceeded along in that way family restaurant discussions often do a lot of remember that ATP person remember this thing. Remember that thing this person was supposed to return but never did and now we don't have that thing or no that person it was in this way. That becky came to mention someone. The family hadn't talked about in years lettuce and as soon as the name was uttered becky could see the power. It's still had over her older sister Joe even after so many years becky brought up letitia. This is becky sister Joe for her. The very word was like a Gut Punch but as she looked around the table Joe Oh saw their parents were struggling to even place the name. It felt like people were trying to remember Letitia like it. Was this hazy thing. Everyone held little snippets. LETITIA drove a red car. LETITIA had small hands Letitia was very beautiful as the family batted around around half memories. Joe remained quiet becky watched the emotion sweep over her sister's face across the table in this very loud restaurant. I just got this wave of sadness about LETITIA LETITIA was becky and Joe's babysitter until one day twenty years ago when she suddenly vanished from their lives.

Would you guys agree that the level Becky that now no woman Rhonda, Charlotte? China sable, the bell is no one has ever reached in very very few men. Have. She stands alone the face of WWE wrestling right now is Becky as Daniel Bryan. Would it be crossing the line if they ran with the story line, if you're familiar seats for chronic traumatic NCO pathway, I think progressive Jenner disease of the brain found in people with a history of repetitive brain trauma caused the person ever rational decision making and acts of violence the poster boy for this Hernandez, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Of course, Daniel Bryan has had a concussion issues in the past. There's any chance w w run with this. No, I do not by. But I think it's a really interesting thought. It is here. It is. Enjoy yourself Francis. Maynard he's at the Philippine embassy in Robie, send us a poster that says, it's it's the when a man loves a woman movie poster, but it's Charlotte hugging Becky. So that's that's pretty. Pretty made. Another message about Becky. There's a lot here guys. One. I'm gonna read one more. We'll we'll get some more of these next week. Male. Justin says Ryan day and eleven hey, sweet, Pete and uptown, Malcolm, you guys broke last week about money that ROY ending right at eleven in the future and seemed to be happy about that. But I must disagree one of the intriguing things about ROY that you don't know when it will end on smackdown. We all know they're going to go home at nine fifty five which way allows us to predict which move on the match, whereas raw keeps us a bit more in the dark. We don't know. Exactly. What move is going to end a great event. Maybe there's a running eleven five that we wouldn't have gotten on smackdown. Due to time constraints at a time when WWF seems to telegraph match endings and surprise returns more than ever. It's a nice change of pace to not be able to predict the clock in my opinion. Unpredictability is one of the things that makes wrestling great. I agree. I would say stay made telling us you eat a piece of delicious.
