"You know, he looks like the real deal. He's got his head on his shoulders. We don't want to mess with that. I wouldn't worry about Mac Jones. Mac Jones can handle himself in the locker room. He was Alabama. He has swag. He was at Alabama with a bunch of different personalities, every all of his teammates wore by him. The Patriots still, as of this moment, still have a lot of strong leadership in that locker room. Matthew slater still in there. I'm sure he would get involved. Guys would keep guys in check. Josh McDaniels would keep him in check. As far as offense is offensive meetings and stuff like that, I am not worried about Odell Beckham poisoning the whole thing. I just, I'm not, but you need, but you need to be smart and you need to realize at some point in time he is going to get restless. It's just make sure you safeguard yourself for when that happens. Yeah, I agree with all of that. My only point with the Cleveland time is, I thought it was much worse in New York. And it wasn't even relatively true. And I think people when they think of OBJ, they think of his time in New York. They haven't been paying as close attention to his time in Cleveland, Chris Bayless. We're going to be pretty good with Tom Coughlin. I think he was pretty good with Coughlin, and then it was new. I was going to say the slick haired car salesman. Ben mcadoo. Yeah. Well, yeah, if that guy coached you, you'd run all over it too. Chris Baylor says I doubt we'll have the best money to offer. Correct me if I'm wrong, Greg, this isn't really a money issue. I mean, I don't think, I don't think any of these teams in the hunt are gonna be looking to pay OBJ any kind of big time money. I mean, they're all going to probably be dealing with the same cake as far as that goes. If you look at Green Bay and Kansas City and I think every team is going to probably have the same kind of offer, which is, hey man, come in, play,.

"You know, getting that sort of rest getting that recuperation playing some then resting. It's only going to be better next year. So you've brought up a couple of times this idea of long-term this makes sense. My question is, does that what OBJ wants? Let's say the Patriots are pitching Beckham. Hey, listen. You get in here. The facility, you get to work with Mac, max the long-term answer again. Offering him stability, but we want you to be here in 2022. And if we bring you in, we want to bring you in for not just the rest of this year, but also next year, my question is, OBJ, does he want that? You know, is this a situation where he says, you know, Bill look, I want to walk into the facility. I want to have some chemistry with Mac. I want to do what I can do on that field and help you guys win, but I want to be a free agent at the end of this season. I want to reestablish my value and I want another bite of the apple and free agency. I wonder if that's what Beckham is thinking. Possible, but if on the Patriots, I'm actually open to that. I mean, at least I just personally I just want to sign up through the end of the year. If there's some sort of option, as long as the Patriots have a way out, I'm fine with that. But if on the Patriots, I'm not, they already made this mistake with Antonio Brown. You know, with guaranteed money and all that stuff and at least they got some of it back. But if I'm them, I'm like, look, just come into our program, help us out for the rest of the year. Let's feel each other out. And then we'll reassess in the off season. And you know, I don't think there's a circumstance on any team where Beckham really even say the Patriots lose out this time. I still think they can land them in the off season. I would like the trial period. But I don't think he's gonna go anywhere. By the time he gets up to speed with a team, there's gonna be like 5 or 6 games left in the season. How good is he really gonna do where it's gonna increase his value all that much? But if I'm the Patriots, I'm interested in, you know, one year only, then we'll see. I'm not using a franchise tag because I need to use it on JC Jackson after this season. But I'm going just let's just deal with the end of the season. Then we'll deal with next season when we get there. Yeah, before we jump to the Carolina game because we want to break down that one as well and what happened over the weekend on Sunday, again, I'm seeing some stuff about diva, you know, diva this, diva that, diva this, diva. And Greg, you can correct me if I'm wrong, but a lot of receivers in the NFL are divas. A lot of receivers want all receivers want the football. When receivers don't get the football receivers bitch, Greg has brought this up. You know, over the past several weeks, Nelson Aguilar has been bitching, like consistently. So, you know, if you're concerned that Beckham's gonna be this guy who's gonna be complaining and bothering Mac Jones, you know, Greg sees is a little bit of that from Nelson Aguilar already. So would you rather have would you rather have OBJ's talent and him maybe bitching every once in a while or a galore's pitching every once in a while and his talent, and I would say again, and we mentioned this for people jumping in right now to watch this live,.

"And similar to Kansas City, you know, if you look at buffalo, they have that one explosive guy in Diggs, Kansas City has the one explosive guy in tyreek hill. And we saw on Sunday, Green Bay limited hill to four catches 37 yards, and there was no explosiveness to that offense for Kansas City on Sunday. And buffalo's going through some of those same things right now. I would say though buffalo, at least they have Beasley. They do have a manual Sanders, maybe Sanders hasn't played as well as they were hoping he would. But, you know, buffalo, when you look at how teams are defending them, it would make sense to have digs and then somebody else on the other side like OBJ. That makes it very difficult. Back to my question that I wanted to ask you a minute or two ago, do you like it for the Patriots? Your personal opinion, should they go after OBJ? Do you like it? Why? Not, or why so? I do, I came around on it. I wrote a column this weekend about it. It basically stayed in the case four and against Odell Beckham junior to the Patriots. And in the end, I came out for. And I was a little bit surprised that I did, because he's not my type of guy. I am not, I don't want to invite the headache, especially since I think I have growing something with this patriots team sort of reestablishing who they are. They've won three games in a row. You have a young quarterback why put more on his plate than he already has. But here's why I came down on, I think they should sign them. And I think they're going to make a very hard run in him. I look at more for next year. And I look at this as more of a tryout process to sort of see, because this season, look, could the Patriots make a Cinderella run and be the first team ever to go to a Super Bowl with a rookie quarterback? Yes. But history tells us it's not going to happen. You know, so the best you're hoping for really for the Patriots is a strong finish to the regular season. Contend for the divisional title with the bills sort of slipping here. Winning a game or two in the postseason, but really building towards next year. When everybody's been in the program, they get a full off season, all that stuff. And I look at next year, the Patriots depth chart for wide receiver. We pretty much know that Nikhil Harry is going to be on. You know, he's going to be a free agent. Are they going to bring them back? I mean, maybe on the cheap if he goes out there and he doesn't have anything. But they're not relying on Nikhil Harry for anything. And then you also have to look at Nelson Aguilar. I don't think he's been bad so far. I've been, you know, he's been fine. Could they look for better? Could they say, you know what? That contract now doesn't look so great for the production that we're getting. Remember, he signed a two year contract, so they can get out of the contract next year. If they want to. And it would actually save them cap space..

"It is the Greg beard patriots podcast with Nick cattles. We are live live, everybody. Of course, we've got a start Greg with the news of the day that everybody has been tracking Odell Beckham, junior. What have you heard about OBJ in the Patriots? So what I've heard is the Patriots are in on it. They've had discussions with Odell's camp, but they are not the only team. There are several teams that have had discussions with him. I do not expect a decision tonight. It'll be interesting to see if Beckham sort of pushes this a little bit. It could cause teams like I would think the Patriots would get out pretty quickly. I think they're the team that pretty much stays their case and says this is the deal. This is what we're offering you. This is what you can gain by coming with us. Take it or leave it. And they don't want to be dragged out because there were initials reports from like justina Anderson saying like it could be a couple of days or he's going to take his time. I don't think a lot of these times one that a lot of these teams want him to take his time. I think they want him in the building as soon as possible. I think the Patriots would love to have him on the field against his former team, the browns on Sunday. And that's not going to happen if he takes his time and we're talking it's dwindling weeks now, what is there 8 weeks left in the season? And, you know, it's going to take him some time to get up to speed and all that stuff. So the Patriots are in it. I can't tell you whether they're the favorite or not. I don't know that. I know that in all my discussions with people around the team, certainly nobody has come close to shooting it down. That they would not have interest, which interests me because normally if they're not going to go full boat into something, then they kind of soft pedal it. But I think they're, I think they're fully in, I think they realize the type of acquisition that this could how could help them short term and long term, but yeah, the Patriots are in this. Any idea how they feel? Not only, you know, if they're in it or not, but do they feel like they have a good chance, a slight chance, a great chance? We know they're at the table, but do they feel good about the chips they have in the pocket? I think the way I would term it is, I think they feel that they have a pretty good chance at landing him. That considering Belichick, where this team is going some of the the veteran leadership on this team, I think they feel like they're in a good position to land Odell and I think I assume they're pitch would be convincing. Like, look, we're building something here, and look what we did for Randy Moss, who I'm sure Beckham has talked to. Look, what we've done for other guys that are similar to you..

"Sign here, this isn't about the Patriots didn't want him. I don't want to see people in the chat on Thursday, bitching. Why didn't they sign hotel? They need Odell. They want him. They are trying to sign him. They can't force him to come here. He has to ultimately choose the Patriots. I'm not saying the Patriots are a bad option. This isn't me saying, you know, 'cause I know this was a narrative. Oh, Brady left and players don't want to play here. And players hate Bill. Like, that's not what this is. Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson are two top 5 quarterbacks. Yeah. Mac Jones has been great. He's not there yet. There's really attractive options on the table for Beckham. I don't think the pagers are out of it. I wouldn't be surprised if he comes here. But I just think at this point, the ball is in his court. I truly believe the offer has been extended. They think he would help the team. They want him. They are trying to get him. Now it's let's see if they do. I don't think this is a matter of them not wanting him. I don't think it's a matter of them thinking he's not good that they can get by without them. They want to add him. It really feels like that. So I don't want to see that. I don't want to see oh, they should have signed Odell. They know they should sign odes. It's pretty clear at this point. They know they should sign hotel. He just has to agree to come here. That to me is, you know, it's on him at this point. It's up to him. Yeah. So the last thing I had on my list of things actually relates to Odell. So we can go into it. At some point in time, and look, I love Jacoby Myers story, right? I love Jacoby Myers a story, but at some point in time we might have a tough need to have a tough conversation about Jacoby Myers because well, first of all, this was not a good game for him against Carolina. Right, I mean. He has the bobble play on third down where Mac throws him past the sticks and he bobbles it and gets tackled the yard short. I mentioned on the fumble, the strip sack by Brian burns that it was Myers that couldn't get open on the route that was taking too long. Forced Mack to hold the ball in the pocket. The problem that I see with him is not that he's not an NFL receiver..

"Read option plays and the design cube runs on the goal line and padding is rushing stats and things like that. Those are things that I think Beckham took notice and you also just look at some of the other guys and one of the things that I've heard from people that I've talked to on Beckham is that he wants to be coached hard. I think that he looks at Ben mcadoo with the Giants. Kevin Stefanski with Cleveland over the last couple of years and says that those guys really have were not pushing me to be the bet my best self. And one of the things that when I heard that, it stood out to me was remember in Randy Moss's Hall of Fame induction speech. He credited Belichick with kind of pushing him to be that next level, right? To be that next kind of cerebral player. And I think that those are the types of things that Belichick gets out of guys. And lastly here, just from a role perspective, a vote out comes here. I really do think that he's going to play more Z than he's going to play X because this patriots offense has outside of O 7 and O 8 O 9 with moss. And that's probably the one exception has never really ran out of the X right? The X role has never really been the target's role. That's never really been the engine or the straw that stirs the drink of the offense. The receiver role as adapted from Welker or Troy Brown really Dion branch Welker to Edelman to nag Jacoby Myers. That is the most important role in this entire offense. I think they're going to look at it and see that he can upgrade that role and you still leave Nelson Aguilar on the outside to run the wind sprints and try to take the top off the defense and you open all that space up on the crossers and the in breakers and the yards after catch plays in the scheme, a little design type of plays that they use with the Z and that's for Beckham, right? Because I think if you put them on the outside and the X I think that's almost wasting him in a lot of ways. So I would just and I think you're gonna move around if they get it. But I would just push back on that because you say,.

"He's not quite that player, but he's still really, really good. And the one thing that I definitely saw on his Cleveland tape is why he grew frustrated with Baker Mayfield and his inability to get him the football, especially I think the beginning of the end for the Baker Mayfield OBJ relationship was the game against Minnesota in week four of this season. Beckham was open on the tape all game long for four quarters. And there were a couple of instances on downfield throws or baker just couldn't get in the ball or the ball was off target and incomplete, there was a couple of times or baker didn't throw him the football and held the ball and didn't go as direction. But Odell could have had a hundred plus yards in a couple of touchdowns in that game quite easily. And just didn't get the football and it felt like there were a couple of instances in other games where he didn't have those opportunities. And he wasn't getting the ball where he needed it. Now, max seems like the type of guy that when you watch some of the ways that they use the receiver is not necessarily here in New England, although I think Odell fits what they do in New England really, really well. I mean, if it's anything, he's that good. Right, going back to Alabama though for a second and just thinking of how they used jaylen waddle and devonte Smith in that offense and some of the you know the skinny posts in the slant routes in the over the middle type of things. And the one on ones on the outside. And the way that Beckham can go ahead and win both inside and outside, it does feel like on top of that, maybe he does have another gear after the catch that he just wasn't able to really show off in Cleveland because of the way that they were using him. Mac hits him in stride on a quick three or 5 step slant or something like that over the middle, and he's got the angle on the deep safety. I mean, those are the types of plays that Odell used to make, right? He used to run right by everybody on those types of throws. And Mac is the type of quarterback that can lead him in stride and put it right on the numbers and allow him to run with the football after the catch..

"Podcast network and on patriots press pass. I'm Evan Lazar as always joined by Alex barth of 98 5 and Atlas in the background. He wants Odell Beckham, junior on the Patriots. Alex has been tracking airplanes, helicopters, letting me know where Norwood airports entire flight log has been for the last couple of hours, of course, Odell Beckham, junior, now officially a free agent he has cleared waivers. Nobody claimed Beckham on the waiver order. So he is a free agent, can choose whatever team he wants to go to Alex. And I reported about an hour ago or so that I've heard three teams that have been connected to Odell the most. That is the hackers, the saints and the Patriots. Now, a couple of people have also touched on the Seahawks as potential suitors for Odell Beckham junior. I haven't necessarily heard that some dark horse raiders, conversations, but those seem like the 5 teams if you want to expand on my report that are really in the mix here for Odell. Yeah, I mean, that's all logical, right? Do the same thing. I know he can make the veteran minimum, but do the saints even have that money, I'm not entirely sure what your capital situation is. Their cap situation is tight. They don't have a quarterback, but I was told that the two most important things to Odell are playoff contention and offensive innovation and coaching, right? And I think a lot of people and they hear good coaching when I tweeted out good coaching, they responded oh, the packers don't have a good coach. You know, la flor kicks field goals in the NFC championship. Well, it does suck. Okay, but the floor sucks from the standpoint of game management situational decision making things like that. When I say good coaching, I mean a guy that's a bright offensive mind that's going to use the player to the best of his ability, not anything to do with did he kick a field goal, you know, down three or whatever it was in the NST championship game..

"The things that the Cleveland Browns are gonna have to discuss when it's time to see if they're gonna pay baker midfield franchise type money, Wendell's world of sports, I'm your host Wendell Wallace, so glad that you could be with us. So now moving forward in all of this, we're still down Beckham junior going to eventually fall. There are rumors that he wants to go to the forty-niners, there's rumor that he wants to go to the Seattle Seahawks. The only question that I would pose to teams looking to see if OBJ o'dell Beckham junior is worth their time and their financial interest is what type of player are you going to be getting with Odell Beckham junior and how much of an impact is he going to make in terms of your team winning? Winning overall, meaning your team's expectations. Because what type of player are you getting an OBJ? Are you getting the player who's? I don't know..

"Don't know exactly in terms of how to put things whereas who's this who's that? Luckily we got 8 more games to play, 8 more weeks to go. Everything will work itself out in a much clearer picture than it is right now. When those world of sports, I'm your host, Wendell Wallace, so glad that you could be with us. Speaking about some of the situations that happened this week in the NFL, here's one thing the Cleveland Browns. Finally releasing Odell Beckham junior in the move that had been in the works since Tuesday night, the browns and Beckham's representatives were still finalizing financial details on Thursday, this past Thursday that would ultimately result in the browns placing Beckham on waivers because he wasn't going to be putting all the wafers until this week that there was no team to claim him for this weekend's game, the browns tried to trade Beckham, the only team that seemed to be interested was the New Orleans saint for just a tad, and they were finally like, nah, can't go ahead and do this. So Odell Beckham, junior, this tenure in Cleveland is over, had 17 catches for 232 yards, zero touchdowns and 6 games of the season. He only had two 100 yard games in the 29 games he played in Cleveland and only 7 touchdowns playing for the browns. So I don't know, man. I guess really quickly, you have to think how much of the how much of this didn't work should be placed at the feet of Baker Mayfield and how much should be placed at the feet of Odell Beckham junior, both of them bear responsibility for it. But when you speak about this failed relationship, is it indicative of Mayfield not being a solid franchise? Quarterback now. He was great today. You know, through that long touchdown pass, he was very proficient. You know, he had great statistics, all those type of things. What was he? He was, what was he today? He was, if I could just bring it up, he was going to know Nick Chubb at a big game. He was 14 or 21, 218 yards. For an two touchdowns. So the browns through the ball 21 times, they ran the ball 23 times Nick Chubb, 14 carried for a 137 yards. They didn't play with Kareem hunt. But everybody's speaking about, well, that's getting back to Cleveland Brown football, running the football, the set things up for the past. Okay, pass. So, okay, I get that. So what does this mean in terms of Baker Mayfield going forward? Because to me, a guy who's going to be asking for somewhere in north of $30 million, he's got to be the guy that is the key to the offense. He's going to be the guy. Can't be Nick Chubb. It can't be the running game. If I'm going to pay some guy 30 something $1 million, then he better give me more than just, I have to rely on the running game for me to be consistent enough to win football games..

You say he has been free. I don't know if you say that but he has been freed has been released the end of an era in cleveland. Pretty interesting stuff. We've got six. Nfc home games to take a look at tastes them hill. We'll hopefully be starting and the chargers. Eagles game is fascinating. The cardinals niner's game dave fascinating. Also they should play it on madden because none of the actual players are going to be in good enough shape to play. Oh well that well maybe they can play on ad and we will petition the league anyway. Welcome to your friday show and we will We'll get into it. We'll give you all the injury updates as well and talk about beckham a little bit. I colts forty five. Forty five and giants or jets. Thirty sorry jets. Thirty of bad football teams on the mind here. So this kind of this kinda lame for michael carter. Right of what happened well. I i don't know if it's mike white getting hurt or the jet saying we need to change up what we do or maybe it's a little bit of both but you had to figure that they couldn't get by throwing little passes. Five six yards past. Scrimmage two running backs and receivers and tight ends and mike. Why did air it out a little bit more. In the time. That he played the touchdown to elisha. Moore's proof of that and When he got hurt. Josh johnson came in and it just seemed like a little bit of a different type of an offense johnson. Little more focused on throwing downfield more so than dinking ducking his way and as a result only one catch although he had to play. That count is passing plays. That helped him look. This was bound app. And it's unfortunate that it happened. Here carter with dud. Yeah he had eighty six total yards. So it's not it's not the worst thing you know everybody expected more especially npr leagues men. Like i knew that he wasn't going to be able to get eight nine catches something like that. But i was still expecting in the neighborhood of five especially four. Officially one fifty two pass attempts. You know that's what's really surprising. And then you get. That annoying tied johnson touchdown cash. And you're thinking why can't that be mccarter. But at least we have maybe a coming out party for allies more. So let's say. I know you can't do it right now. You can only pick up beckham now if you could in you land pickup beckham or allies. More would you pick up without knowing what team odell beckham. 's going to I'd probably say odell beckham okay. Sixty three minutes to say that. I don't like elisha more. You guys know how much i like..

Browns vs Chargers: Final Injury Report Full of Concerns for Cleveland

"We're still looking at Wednesday's injury report, but for the Chargers, everybody's getting a little practice, and there's no D and ds. Anybody that's not practicing is on IR. Right. Those are the only guys that are not practicing, but knock on wood doesn't this feel weird? It feels good. It feels really weird because when you look at the Cleveland Browns, there's a slew of dudes of DNP. There's a lot. There is a lot of 15 or 17 something crazy. There's a lot of people on this list. Yeah, in years past, this would be flipped. We would be the one with the scroll of players that are not practicing and the other team had like a handful. Not this year, folks this year, we've only got one two and three, four, 5, 6. People on the list and everybody's practicing. Yeah, three of them are limited, but they only guide on their list that's like come on dude is Chris Harris. You know, like, you asked the point or else they would have put them on IR. He had to be so close to being able to play. He has to be back this week. Coach coach talked about him last during his most recent press conference and he said that, you know, he practiced in pads last week. There are really wanting these guys to get healthy and stay healthy. Right. It feels like he's probably going to play this week. He got in limited, but, you know, Justin Jackson Derwin and Chris Harris are limited. So everyone else is full. So that's pretty crazy. Yeah. And yeah, and it's crazy because the browns have an extra day rest too, 'cause they put Sunday, we play Monday. Their list is huge, man. It's crazy because a lot of these are like, they're just not practicing. Coach is just like not injury related. They're just resting. Two of the guys. Run them up. Run them off. Run them off, dog. Let's see. So we've got Odell Beckham junior. He's practicing in full davin Clowney. He's he didn't practice, which is, I mean, that's a big name. Wow. Him in victoria and so he posted a collage of photos of the two of them in matching outfits. For the last twenty yeah. They're like fully matching like full on like leather matching outfits. Purple matching outfits. I sold. They're so good and they're not just like cohesive they are matching and he posted the photos and he said twenty. Two years later still matching outfits. I thank you so much for doing. This is my pleasure. Thank you for having me a watched. The doc i loved it i cried. I think this entire pandemic has just brought into focus. What what moms are up against. What caretakers are up against the amount that we rely on our caretakers in order to build our own career. I think this has struck a chord because it does create a full look but also. It's a kajol that you can use on your waterline. And i have supersensitive eyes. And i can't use a lot of islanders. That are out there this one we developed specifically so i can wear it. Yeah and so it. Is it safer. The History (and Erasure) of Black Brewers

"Despite the overarching image of whiteness. When it comes to beer there is a vast history of black brewing culture. Which like so many things has been largely erased from the history books and cultural consciousness. James bennett the second dove into this for a recent peace in eater. He acknowledges the huge influences of german and irish culture in america but points out. That's not the only source when it comes to beer quoting eater. The ancestors of african americans. They were fermenters. They were really good at making their own liquor and making their own beers and also making wine from fruit says the culinary historian and writer. Michael w twitty one of our african 'isms in fact was producing all of these things and one of the reasons why we did. That was because it was related to our traditional spirituality libation twitty. Ads is the heart of african spiritual worship. He recounts seeing this firsthand on a trip to takhar village in cameroon. They pull out a big ceramic vessel full of their traditional beer. He says and even though a lot of takhar our muslim this is one of the traditional religious practices that they keep alongside islam. What beer-drinking may be nonexistent on friday. Would he notes. You better believe that at social functions to honor youth. Celebrate a marriage or the deceased in the ground. Alcohol is poured out and passed among the elders and quotes alcohol and in many cases. Beer was and is important. Spiritually and culturally to many different communities in africa throughout the ages as european colonizers began enslaving people and forcing them to work on their stolen land. The knowledge and skill sets of many enslaved black people surrounding bruin were exploited quoting again. The prevailing image of enslaved black person is that of someone laboring in the fields were being ordered around the big house but american slavery built in sustained a pretty much every aspect of this american life and that included beer again the west african societies. From which so many bodies were stolen. Were no stranger to the mechanisms of fermentation. We know that. Enslaved africans and african caribbeans were brewing beer or were cultivating hops or other grains. That would have been used in the brewing process. Says theresa mccullough of the smithsonian's national museum of american history. Black brewing skill was no secret. She adds advertisements for enslaved. People who were skilled. Brewers -absolutely wanted posters that identified fugitives as skilled brewers or otherwise involved in the brewing industry. As american as apple pie. Peter hemmings enslaved at monticello was a master brewer and quote but even if their expertise was being used to produce beer many black individuals who were free at the time. Weren't drinking much of it. Part of it was because temperance. Got rolled into the abolitionist movements. Most abolitionists were anti alcohol. Seen it as a toxic influence and a tool of the oppressor now. That's not to say that all temperance advocates were abolitionists. Far from it but most abolitionist were teetotalers. But there is also a practical angle. Bennett explains black. People were wary of being taken advantage of by white people while drunk and also simply didn't have the money or time for drinking while they were figuring out more important matters like getting an education job and securing semblance of safety in a dangerous climate then in the second half of the nineteenth century beer and cider went from being a smaller mostly at home type of operation to a profitable business largely. Thanks to the influence of german immigrants in america and of course now that it was profitable. Black brewers were shut out and being that beer was now more something to be purchased at an establishment like a saloon versus consumed at home. Black people were also often refused service. Then prohibition hits and when it was repealed with many federal regulations in place breweries were fearful of being shut down so they leaned hard into patriotic. Branding the kind of whitewashed stars and stripes apple pie type of america that is definitively white as been it says. Advertising has more to do with what we buy than most of us care to admit and by his accounts that adds up with the consumer trends that we saw throughout the second half of the twentieth century as white flight brought middle and upper middle class white people to the suburbs where they could host parties at home and had a bit of bigger budget a lot of them swapped beer for cocktails and thinking that they could get them back with a beer that had as high as cocktails beer. Companies tried to sell the white suburbanites on malt liquor but the attempt flopped most likely minutes opposes. Because it's something of an acquired taste so then a pivot happened quoting again. How did malt liquor go from garden. Party aspirated two boys in the hood levels of despair. The exact y. Is a matter of law but jane. Nicole jackson beckham diversity ambassador for the brewers association has a pretty good idea. The story i've been able to get is that there was some kind of persistent market research saying that. Urban audiences make more purchasing decisions based on. Abc and that urban audiences tend to buy for volume. She says the decision was made to market malt liquor not as an upscale product but a specifically urban products and to put it in a large vessel boom the forty and quotes

How Lessons From Esports Past Drives Esports Future with Repeat.gg CEO Aaron Fletcher

"This audience. So Eric go through the companies you found it quite a few there are plenty of starts across this industry. What advice can you give to some one of the first steps of fouling their own Esports or gaming company that you wish you do when you were starting out darn raised before you have Mom don't do anything until you have markets it it's it's that's it. That's purely it. I guess there's two things and don't be a dick but the the biggest one is definitely until you have some formal Market 5th and you can find out if you go to market fit pretty quickly just talk to people ask questions find the right people finding users find those things find out how much they willing to pay find out if they're willing to basically walk or use your product find out all these sort of things and grow that first before you start thinking. Oh, this is amazing. This is going to work cuz I think there's there's and and then I guess the other one actually is learned from birth. Past experiences and a lot of people don't do that, especially with a t Sports because the history have a have a chat to someone like either myself or have a chat like don't talk to someone who's a consultant that's been in the year in in the game two years talked to someone who's being in the industry for twenty years because they will tell you a lot more valuable information than someone who's been in there for two years and only knows about the currency because the current scene it's all about raising this big money about raising this big capital and you don't get the history of like the companies like tournament.com the raised a hundred million dollars and went broke over six months. You don't have seats need a CDL or CTS. I think it is that raised a hundred million dollars as well and we're broke after a year-and-a-half. You don't have all of these kind of things and we're play verse was as an example before they became what they raised what they are now off and that that you kind of could find on the internet even though I know the history there and there's a lot of other companies like that that you'll that you you only get from the perspective of people that have actually been in the industry because people have a game Get it either scrubbing the internet or it's just hard to find anything that isn't relevant now absolutely agree. It's the same advice. I give to student journalists. I talked to quite a few classes about hey, what could you do any sports journalist? What if we want to get involved in this space? And the first thing I tell them is get to know the history of the space get to know everything that happened with Major League Gaming from 2002 to 2010. That's where the start get to the creedy sports Association how this developed in Asia and that will guide your accurate reporting on this space if you understand what happened long before you probably got involved in it that was the case for me cuz we got a school, you know, I was in the 2015 2016 range was like, oh massive Madison Square Garden League of Legends. This is crazy thing off you go back in time and you're like, okay, let's look at the Madden tour bus as like an example of where it's these things that happen is sports over the time that I think are really crucial job. Like understand how we got to the place where at today and then helped give you those guiding lessons to make sure that the same mistakes aren't made. Well MLG an ESL at two really good examples of understanding their Acquisitions why they happened what happened with the issues they ran into especially MLG with God Frank cuz they had a whole pile of litigation issues with God frag when they did their acquisition why they got acquired by Activision and wage. It's it's an interesting story. That's probably better for another time. But in terms of those sort of things and that history that was kind of built there is actually really important because getting a quiet is a skilled gaming platform different platform broadcasting platform any of those by a publisher is a huge problem from both illegal Nightmare and a whole pile of other things because the skilled gamer is 18 plus as well as the tournament system requires 18 plus or Parental Guidance cetera, et cetera. So it becomes a Minefield on those sort of things and then you've got ESL same thing going through their acquisition and the different times they are now with mods. This group and and the difference in the kind of the company structure cuz everyone says he s l and they see these companies and they're like, they must be making it a billion dollars and I'm like, yeah doesn't look like that. It may seem like that from the outside cuz they're doing these large events and they're doing these things. But in terms of the revenue is not driven as much as you kind of think from that. It's really driven through the Publishers. Yeah, if you're done if you're not the publisher gave and you work a t sport chances are the money is not flowing your exactly there's only a few Outlets the kind of work and I've been in basically every single facet of that because I used to run events with the young. I used to run a lot of those sort of things with them for a long time. Actually u c l e s w c w c g a lot of the events around those and running those Live Events is is great. But it's like a break even marketing cost. It's not a it's it's what you'll use to fuel income elsewhere. Not what you're used to make money lost leader marketing basically at this point. Yeah, exactly. That's it's a funny industry to be it especially as we look at where these Sports organizations are going. This is totally off topic. By the way. Just the I had em for this wasn't for a podcast but I talked to Jason Lake in Andy Miller Jason Lake complexity CEO Andy Miller NRG CEO for audience. I do you do that. They were basically talking about hey, we're going to make Revenue eventually with our religious the Publishers of Olives. That's that's what we're counting on to make money in the mean time. We're going to keep building our brand up in whatever way we can we're to keep trying to capture feds. But really we just need to log get to a point where Publishers need us to enter the game because that will bring fans that will bring the marketing there looking for and then the Publishers have to reward us for doing so and that's kind of just walk the biggest eastwards organizations in the world see this space right now and that's it tells a lot. I think it will you actually have a look at most of these Sports organizations or actually converting from competitive Play De comme Recreation almost all right, converting over to that for Revenue basis cuz I've talked to a lot of these guys you have come like you've got Team Liquid as an example of trying to push in the text side of things cuz we've talked to him a few times about what they're doing for Thursday. We also consulted with the guild who raised with David Beckham, or they paid David Beckham to re it was it was a debacle. It was a drastic they they they are doing a good job. I think they really heavily like ninety percent of the money that they raised is purely attack. It's not to do to build out the team and build out anything on that account on the arm competitive site is secured purely build out both the content side as well as a Tech play on them because of the end of the day all this content and everything that they're creating in these fans and these users they need to figure out a way to monetize them and monetizing them generally comes through like merchandise. It comes through tourneys to come home a brand deals. And unfortunately, if you're the best game in the world, it doesn't mean you have a massive following you may not be entertaining to watch. So therefore content creation becomes king for this and which dog And fuels Brands which in turn fuels everything else and like I just talking to so as as Consulting with IDC, I think like probably a couple of weeks ago. I was I was talking to them cuz they're doing metro sports at the moment and it was a pretty interesting conversation cuz they're one of the first companies that isn't Yuzu that isn't that they're doing it. They're doing Esports Revenue a very different way. So Esports Revenue right now is off late. It is how much so it's like one point two billion or something. It's basically nothing compared to the publisher revenues like a hundred and sixty billion. So and that's where most of the revenue from E Sports is actually going. So what they're doing is they're doing a bottom-up kind of approach and looking at all of these other things that are kind of skewing it. So right now Esports revenue is calculated with just brands that are paying for events and advertising and all the way around that around which basically whereas they're looking at it from the other side of things and they're like, look, there's all this gambling Revenue that's also generated on top of Like betting on these matches and all this this looking that's that's showing any sports revenue and you've got companies like skills that their revenue alone for skills is bigger than the revenue of every single e sports team exists in the world in his voice. That's

So i feel all of your pain and i wanna get into women's basketball with the of course and we'll get to the professionals and a little bit but i want to start by asking you about the really the single biggest name that's been dominating the college game pretty much all year as a freshman and that is page bekker's with percents. How would you begin to describe page. Bekker's for someone who's unfamiliar with what she's been up to it yukon Well pablo the word coming out of stores was that page. Bekker's was going to be the next coming of breanna stewart or diana taurasi right. So that's high praise no pressure. Yeah none at all. She was a number one. Overall recruit in the twenty twenty class and her rival in college. Basketball was highly anticipated list. Three beckham's with the rebound put first seconds of her client career where we were literally salivating and watching her highlights from high school wondering if she would be the player to finally get connecticut back to winning championships since keep in mind. They lost in the final. Four in the last three tournaments. Pretty much ever. Since breanna stewart left well pays bekker's is not only a great player. She has six hundred forty nine thousand instagram followers. More uconn legend sue bird by the way when she became the first player in uconn history with three straight thirty point gains. We knew something special was happening and she really hasn't disappointed. I mean her perfect field. Go performance the last five minutes versus number one south carolina that was quite the epic performance bekker's from around the screen and set the stage for what we've been seeing from page so game and her style of play. How would you characterize it. What's made her so dominant as just a freshman making a debut. This impressive at five eleven paid really makes the game easier for everyone else on the court well except her opponents of course.

"Our guest today are anti creek bombs. And nick axelrod welk anne neck i love. I love a duo on the podcast. Welcome thing so excited to be here so let me let me give a little. A little highlight with your bio. Anne is a beauty journalist turned exac and former brand lead for glossy and nick is a former reporter for l. and wwe which is women's wear daily correct. Yes it is there. Were these things called. Newspapers that we used to read would get delivered every day. It was the fashion newspaper. Like the most. I one of the most iconic fashion newspapers i would say and you are also the co founder of the personal brand. Excuse me personal care brand. Necessar- said that right. It's been awhile since i've taken french. And you co founded the iconic beauty site into the gloss and together. They co host eyewitness beauty which is a beauty and pop culture. Podcast available wherever you get your podcast. You guys to focus on the business side of beauty. And i'm curious with this question. I'm not even i'm wondering if it's even possible for there to be trends in beauty in twenty twenty one when when the beauty is feels like the world has kind of just been uprooted or or changed by this pandemic but what are some trends that you are are seeing that you're seeing and that you like for yourself well on the kind of inside baseball cy. But sure it's not news to anyone like you describe yourself as like more of like a novice like outsiders which i think you're an expert than you give credit for it. But but for since the since they started tracking this stuff color cosmetics which make up products. I don't need to explain to anybody. Listening with that. Means has been like the category that's been consistently the number one revenue driver for any like big brand just for the industry in general like like the biggest challenge of the pie. I don't know what color cosmetics is so that's basically when you walk into a sephora and you're you're the first thing you see is makeup skin care is in the back of the store and the fragrances at the back of the wall like. That's all intentional. In order of sales. Yeah oh lord was at a certain point. Yeah learning okay okay. yeah so. The industry is is sliced up. Land like hair care. Skin care whatever color. Cosmetics has been like since the dawn of time like the number one biggest category billions of billions of dollars. Will just last year skin care has taken over which hilly coming from my glossy and like kind of seeing that wave happen. I think it really started with k beauty coming into the us people on the internet. We're getting much more educated around like ingredients and different. There's going team. I think like the trend has been going on for quite some time. But just last year. I think with the pandemic And people being at home and having to diy more skin care. And i think too like people understanding like actually. I don't need to see a dermatologist. For every little thing. I can exhausted. Leasings myself Skin-care has overtaken. So i think that that's gonna continue for sure in like the entrance of all these mid to lower mid range brands in terms of price point like the ordinary or the inky list or natori like things that could all of a sudden by acid For ten dollars versus what happened probably five years ago which is either the hydraulic. Acid is from lemaire and it's two hundred and fifty dollars or they're probably wasn't even one you could buy in the drug store so i think that they're just exists now category of product. So that you know what like with makeup. You could buy ten dollar lipstick to get the same idea as a forty dollar up stick Same relative color now with skin care. You can sort of do the same thing. Okay so many so many questions. So i wanna i ask you because you mentioned this sensation of going into sephora and everything is so deeply intentional and i know it's the same with marketing and packaging and in thinking about like price points getting lower. Our is the quality of products the same so much of beauty just like markups and exclusivity and making something sound fancy and getting it in the hands of like victoria beckham or is there a true difference in quality so one anecdote i have. Is that one time someone told me in this completely rocked my world. That lemaire is made in long island and and that sort of says it all like you know. It's a cream with some like plankton. In it or you know no seaweed. I guess and it's made long island and they call it. Lum creme de la mayor and it's three hundred dollars Is that does that mean that. There's two hundred dollars worth of ingredients in there. No one hundred fifty. No one hundred fifty eight okay. So for context like the markup degree product but for a healthy cosmetics company business in general the markup on cosmetics from the goop and the packaging is eighty percent margins. So a two dollar what it cost you two dollars to make gold charge ten dollars for and that's like standard across the industry and you can't really knock a cosmetics company for doing that because they are so so cheap to make and to have investors to be able to pay the bills to be able to make this something that can really support a team and you know whatever and like grow a business. That's just industry standard so like. I don't think anybody's pulling the wool. Over consumers is this markup rate on the fashion. It's like some pence fifty percent or less of a markup. So that's i kind of a comparison. I forgot like what other interesting. I was about to say it. But i'm sure nick has a million. Well well yeah it's not. It's not an evil thing. The markup i think there's so many more there's so many more costs testing everything saying what's the difference between something that's like super expensive versus something. That's like a little bit more accessible. I do think that there's a huge difference. I mean i think what the ordinary did is like very interesting. And i still think they make like a lot of great products in general but you kinda of see like the texture of putting on like the heireann sierra and from the ordinary that costs you six dollars versus like one that has more ingredients in it from like a. I don't even know if they have one and playing with taught harper. Like it's this absorbs into skin better doesn't leave sticky feeling. Where's better under makeup. Like might smell nicer. These are all things that you have to consider. Its except for some people. It's worth paying for for others. It's not worth it and they'd rather just by the seven dollar one so okay so this leads me to my next question. Which is i'm kind of obsessed with this idea of dupes especially when it comes to here and makeup like and candles but not all. Dupes are really dupes. I kind of get into this. Like spiral do you believe. Dupes are real as possible to have a troop in skin care or makeup products. I think it's rare. There's certain things that you can charge more money. For the candle you can afford like a fragrance concentrations get a more powerful fragrance certain synthetics that are really expensive like amd brett Which is a mosque. like an animal derived. it was an animal derived. Musk now it's all Made in the lab But that is like a really expensive thing to create. So that's why a lot of like less expensive candles expensive fragrances. Don't have that smell

"Over the summer, , we've been reporting on a new sports organization or technically a rebranded older organization. . The Lord's E. Sports became guilty sports and welcome David Beckham on as a CO owner q a lot of mainstream fanfare including on this podcast. . Then they listen to the organization on the London Stock Exchange and that felt like a bold choice considered very few eastwards organizations are. . Actually publicly traded companies mostly because they don't make any money yet but guilty sports was able to raise twenty million pounds at evaluation of about forty million pounds and today we learned where most of those pounds are going to end up going thanks to buy a SEC at the East sports observer his report which I will link below says before Beckham sign on as a CO owner, , the organization entered into an influencer agreement with Beckham. . It's a five year deal where the former soccer star will become. . The face of guilty sports. . Exchange will be paid out fifteen million pounds or about twenty million dollars beckons. . Actual investment in the company is about three hundred grand. . Beckham also gets fifteen percent of all merchandise and sponsorship revenues throughout this five year deal. . Wow. . This is a tough sell. . So now you have a publicly traded eastwards organization that competes in just a few titles, , Rocky League and fever being the main to. . Is Sports organizations do not make that much money even when they can take home one, , hundred percent of all merchants sponsors sales guild will be operating with eighty five percent of those revenue streams. . Now, , the organization is on the hook for twenty million dollars paid out increasing annual installments over the next five years plus fifteen percent of those two primary revenue streams. . In addition to the twenty million dollars, , they raised the public listing guild also raised additional six million dollars in outside capital. . But the public offering bullet is really only able to be shot. . What's now the stock will have to work on its own merits if they want people to continue pumping money into the organization. . And given the history of publicly traded eastwards companies. . That's not really that likely to happen.

"You guys are pro- NCAA segments ago. WPRO responsibility play volleyball here. Trying to set up for a spike and he should take heed Jericho. What are you doing? Listen I don't know what to do to captain. America forget today on the heels of him donating all the money to venerate house. This new information though to that point like this you don't today when you realized that man. Jj What's pretty good guy. The idea. That Stu gods one of the funny things about the Gods is the story. We've told a number of different times which is about ten years ago. He got carried away and offered to donate one hundred dollars per goal for the Florida Panthers and that night He did a bunch of interviews about what he was doing. The Panthers scored seven goals. And all that Stugotz ever actually gave to charitable efforts and the panthers was those interviews. He was doing about his charity. And that's the guy who's criticizing. Jj Watt for like conquering floods and helping our military. I was raising awareness. Yes yes you're doing interviews. You're you were so happily doing interviews like you. You did a victory lap on just saying you're giving uh-huh actually actually in really give it. It's a great victory lab. Everyone Ellen knows if you actually get the money or not so you expose you guys have made the argument. You guys have made the argument around here before that. What's the point of giving if people don't see you doing well? That is one hundred percent that is not dumb. You guys misunderstood my point with that argument. I'm saying these people that work in the service industry. They want to know that you liked their work. They don't want if they're gonNa make twenty dollars on the day they'd rather get a dollar from all twenty people that have nineteen people stiff them and only twenty from from someone else. They want to know every single person that I dealt with today thought I was good and gave me a tip. That's not false you so they'd rather have like thank you cards than tip. I'm saying if they're going to get twenty dollars regardless they'd rather have a dollar from all twenty people they help that day. As opposed to nine thousand nine hundred stiffs and only one guy gives them a huge tip. They'd rather be leave work saying I've helped everyone in. Everyone thought I gave get service. All I know is that when I tip somebody. I want everyone to know that I did. Yep same here. I don't put it in a jar I handed to you. You're either GONNA take my dollar or a couple of dollars or you're you're not getting it if they have a jar hover just so like because they're actually at like starbucks or something. I'm like turnaround white tipping with changes. Perfect 'cause you give less and it makes louder under noises so here. I'm an old put it on the poll when you tip at starbucks or places like it do you hover over the bull so that the worker sees you giving like two servers servers prefer everyone gives them five loud pennies over one guy giving them a twenty but they hear that that change hit the jar and they're like job well done about the server. This this is all about me and how good of paying I am. You don't say hey. Just put the change into the jar right you get the change in your hand and then you drop it in yourself. Ah sometimes if they're not looking throw it on the floor so that they all look drop the change. That's for you pick it up. How do you guys feel about the places? And they're more of more of them in Miami that ring a bell or make some sort of seen. I know bars do it but make some sort of seen when you're giving it's the best at I'd prefer for fireworks but I'll take the bell. I'm going to start bringing my own bell. Yeah just in case. They don't have one ring the bell and not money.

"The funny thing about the giants. There's clearly no plan because the plan of taking the plan of taking saquon Barkley number two doesn't match up with the plane of trading. Odell Beckham those two divergent plans saquon Berkeley, number two is a guy who take. Hey, we're close we need this transcendent running back to set things up in the offense, but trading Odell Beckham. Now, you have saquon when are they going to be in the playoffs? Not in the next three to four years. So now you're wasting his best years on a rookie contract for offense. That's complete dodge shit. Yeah. It makes those sevices what? Maybe should we do some more poetry Shumshere? Since we're talking about Gettleman decided, no, this this, isn't this isn't. I not that kind of music. Actually. Yeah.
