"Some people say it's on a ball and socket joint but technically it is very very flexible joint that basically doesn't keep the tendon going in one direction like ours does so it can bend sideways either way and it can also bend backwards and that finger is ideal if you like to eat bugs and grubs out of trees so they will chew in with the beaver lake teeth that the person nominated the mentioned and then they will get inside of wood and scoop out whatever grubber bugged. They want to eat with that amazing tapping finger speaking of delicious meals. That a creature might eat. I feel like going back to the opossums. A lot of people may associate opossums with trash for lack of a better term. Because they're scavengers right. I mean what is the life of an apostle like they are scavengers but they're also predators they're also forager's i call them the generalist of generalists. So you'll get mammal species where you know across the southeast shore. They eat a lot of different things that individuals will specialize or the front one particular thing they want to eat. You look at just one opossums stomach content. So that's really showing what they ate in a day or two. It's just an entire evolutionary tree. Birds plants slugs mice grasshoppers unit. They've eaten it. I think they get the bad rap that they're associated you trash because they're in our environment and you know they have really don't get noses they can pick up everything on issues throughout some tasty food. They will be there but that's not going to be the only thing they're eating and i also have a hypothesis that i needed to test. I think they're also yields in the trash cans as dens. I think they get a bad rap because occasionally there in a trash can get that picture taken and it becomes a medium. Just is all downhill from there for possums. Megan is our so funky looking. What is their family structure like. Is that something that might be a charismatic point. Absolutely and i. I would challenge folks to look up. Pictures of baby is particularly. Those low. Lived here at the duke. Lemur center repent some very good-looking babies in recent years. I'd argue that. A lot of primate babies look funky no offence to anyone out there so with Baby care is our primate so by nature. They're going to have a really strong relationship with their baby. They tend to have one infant at a time. Maybe twins but that's more rare And they will spend years teaching that baby. Primates like is an humans are born with notoriously few instincts. We need to learn a lot from our parents in order to survive and so mom spends a lot of time with them. My favorite thing. That baby is due. Besides all the other normal he'd step of playing with mom and surprising her is when they're learning what they can eat and what they can't eat they will literally just walk up to their mom and grab the food of her mouth and learn. Oh that's something that i eat by just stealing it out of mums now. I feel like an elephant in the room. Here is that is really look. Unlike any thing. I've ever seen before some people not me but some people may say that they look a little creepy and that i hear is the source of some myths in their native ranges. Is that right. Yes it can be so it's interesting our recent understanding of the malagasy peoples. So that the people who live in madagascar and their view is another. Lemurs is evolving as we learn more about how diverse those people are so for a little background. Madagascar's home to over twenty seven million people. So that's a lot of people to summarize beliefs on animals and a recent study that came out with the malagasy scientists in german scientists actually found that even two villages that are within a day's walk of each other might have vastly different views. On the i saw in one village. They might find people who see them as an evil omen there even some held beliefs. Still to this day. That is if they're seeing they will bring evil might even involve killing the i to protect their village but on the other side less than a day's walk away. They found people who actually saw the is as a form of pest control because they were growing things like sugar cane and is to the grubs and bugs that invest their plans and so it really varied but the overall trend was not surprising just like everywhere else in the world. The more ecological knowledge biological knowledge came in lower the rate of the superstitions and the cultural taboos against the animal. But i would just caution. Everyone not to think that everyone and madagascar has the same view just like everyone in the. Us doesn't either staying on this morbid theme for a moment. I know that opossums have a flair for the dramatic particularly playing dead. Why do they do that. How does it work. I love my dramatic steffi species we are not entirely sure why it's involuntary. He equate it to a human fainting. So it's not something you want to do. But it's essentially fainting out of fear and opossums. It seems to really happen with touch so if dog is running at them as soon as the dog actually reaches them. That's they kilo earn their on their side mouth hanging open. You know like the biggest smile except it's kind of different actually looks like a smile. It salivating when that happens is stay. Open it defecates. It releases this foul green liquid from its anal glands. So it's doing everything possible to not be eat. Studies show that their heart rate and a brain activity is an actual changing so again similar to painting but it can take them a few minutes up to an hour to recover and i think the issue is if you like. Oh no. I'm so sorry possum you are going after your dog. Who just chased after this As you touch it than it just prolongs their feigning death. What an argument for the charismatic. But it's an important thing to mention just a quick note that i'm kathleen davis and this is science friday from wnyc studios. We have just about reached the end of our time here. But i need to ask both of you to give me your best final arguments for your creatures. Why does your creature deserve to be crowned the most charismatic of this matchup. Meghan why don't you go. First with the i i will so i want to start by saying. I'm so glad both of these creatures are being featured but obviously i'm team i i think what edges them into the top for me is that they're just so incredibly unique they don't fit into the same old other primates. They don't fit into the same old as other. Lemurs they have all these incredibly unique things about them and their solitary really hard to find in the wild. So there's still so much more that we can learn about them that we don't even know yet and so i would argue that all of those factors together Just make them kind of a modern day mystery. That makes them fascinating and worthy of the title or at lisa. It's your turn now. What is your closing argument for. The oh possum. There are over one hundred capacity season the americas that we have one that made it all the way up into temperate north america and so. This is a really unique feces. They're very hardy and they are also resistant to rattlesnake venom. And we recently discovered that if sham uv. Light on possums. They were glow pink. In terms of charismatic mammals marsupials are largely under study especially american marsupials are so understudied and up until recently have been largely maligned. There is a new year's eve. Possum drop in north carolina up until nineteen. I think so they get really bad. Raps for just kinda look different and being different of the only marsupial in the us okay. Do you think that we've heard enough for our listeners. To choose their favourite charismatic creature of the day. I think we got pretty comprehensive arguments. And i think listeners have a pretty difficult choice ahead of them where can vote so listeners can go to science friday dot com slash carnival to cast their vote for which creature they think is the most charismatic. That's.

"And, um, I was just observing throughout this whole process of the pandemic, how the different states handled it. We were lucky enough here in Oklahoma to have a very good state Department of Health, which hit the ground running on distribution of vaccines, and I think got them put out pretty quickly. But then I went to neighboring states where they would have laws that would still would seem to Get in their way like in one state. You had to be a pharmacist to administer, administer the vaccine, and I thought that they need to change that in that state, because that's that's hindering them from distributing this Really, I am. Have a lot of criticism candidly for how my governor Governor Cuomo has handled certain aspect of, um Of the pandemic in helping to protect people's health and then in how the vaccine has has rolled out. I will say, though, that I have a lot of appreciation and support for On Governor Cuomo being kind of one of the governor's. She was not the only governor to take the stance that one of the governors who said you know we need as many people who are qualified, but as many people who are qualified I'm good Minister. Vaccines TB vaccinators We've had your doctors and nurses and, you know firefighters to our E. M. T s and pharmacists and paramedics. And you know, dental hygienist. You could administer the vaccine. I mean, really, like we took an approach of We want everyone who could be a vaccinated to be evac center in New York state, and I think that was absolutely right Approach. In fact, with Chelsea Clinton I didn't mean to dwell so much on the pandemic little bit of personal interest in as far as I'm concerned. I fell in love with your home state of Arkansas lived and worked there for eight years. I still keep a boat up at Beaver Lake, and I'm wondering that big hunk your life was spent there, do you do you ever get back? Is there still any connections there for you? My absolutely I haven't been anywhere really much, but in non pandemic times, you know and try to be in Arkansas. Yeah, once or twice a year. At least I have Um One of my closest friends like still lives in Little Rock, I and still very closed toe Some of my friends, parents and my friends who made who now live in Texas or North Carolina but whose parents are still in Arkansas. I also have found them raises be relate because a kid on did Yes, it is very much a place that is very close to my heart. Oh, yeah. When I first moved there to work in the radio business, I went out to the lake, and I just said I am staying. This is my soul right here. And I mean e mean, there's so many beautiful parts of the state on guy have so many wonderful memories of Of being in the Ozarks as a kid, but also in being in the forests, like being on the rivers. I could not, You know, I think obviously, the Mississippi gets a lot of attention. But there's so many beautiful rivers and lakes throughout the stage. White River Buffalo River. Yeah, yeah, I mean, I was it was a great place to grow up..

"Found myself helping a lot of people with their animals through my life. Coaching work and i thought well rather than sending people to a dog trainer. Why don't i just learn more about dog. Training and beaver lake get certified in it and make it official. And so i ended up. Getting certified is a dog trainer through the animal behavior. College and i went. And i trained with cesar milan. The dog whisper at his dog. Ecology center. Here in santa clarita outside of la. And i just immersed myself in. That and quickly became a member of his team. I was teaching classes at his ranch on the weekends and working at his. His events workshops for has people from all over the world come into town for like four or five day events to learn about energy and on dog behavior and training and i moved up within his team and became the meditation director on his team. It just took things to a whole new level because it was everything. I was learning in hearing him talking about. I was like yes. This is what i've been experiencing or this is what i've been feeling guided to do recognizing energy and how energy effects animals and how our thoughts feelings and emotions could potentially affect a sensitive dog and also working with people to make the connection for people so there really is any dog training. There can be kind of a life. Coaching aspect of it. Because you're working with the person absolutely telling them in your piecing things together. You're helping them communicate better with their dog in a way that there may be not understanding because they're so far in the forest the trees of the situation. There was something here where you know being able to help. People understand what their pets are thinking and feeling and being sorted that like translator and then helping people in their own life. Maybe make some shifts because a lot of times when animals are having behavioral challenges. It's a result of the person being stressed or sad or worried or too excited and so helping people manage their energy commoner energy specifically through meditation. It just really came together. Yup i started really build a a following clients and And i really felt fine only like on purpose my whole life. I wasn't sure what my purpose was. Ideally what i realized they really wanna be able to do is work with animals and help people with their animals and help people and to feel inspired and just feel joyful and animals are an opportunity there like a gateway to that especially i ex exactly i wanted to ask you about about harlow and your experience with her cooper was like the you know the big inspiration the soul mate dog yet but harlow she was a two year. Old pit lab mix. It may be on it. Never got her tested but definitely pit. I thought like. Wow i cure. I thought i knew sensitive dogs and this dog was like two times thousand and i was just so freaked out and that was a real calling for me to step it up and to take it to a new level up the ante and my understanding leadership for sensitive dogs at her level so she ended up being so transformational she transforms. Because that's when i was working at cesar milan's ranch so is bringing her to our events and she was working with students. I would bring all of my dogs to work with students. And she was like the greatest teacher because a student would be handed her leash and she would just drop and wouldn't move and people would have to learn how to get her to walk and all about their calm confident energy and respond to calm confident energy. If you had a clear intention knew what you're doing she would move and it was amazing. Seeing how she would work with people. In caesar use her he would specifically request her for a certain demonstrations of how she would respond to different people's energy so she she came out of her shell. She was desensitized. And you know they're always little memories big memories and feelings and reminders of her presence around and in all the work i do at the ranch is caesar's ranch at events she's always mentioned in celebrated as being this profound teacher in even the everything i learned from her aunt from cooper i in his helping when i'm working with other people. I was educated through them. So when other people are facing issues like dilated cardiomyopathy or cooper incontinence or hip display. Zsa were skin allergies or things like that. I'm all the more educated. Because i've experienced it with them. So and harlin passing away. Two years ago this spring still brickhouse still youthful. She came to me when she was two and She she left when she was nine. But i was so grateful for her and everything i learned from her and and the money came in a few months after he's carrying the torch for harlow and he's not sensitive at all. He's he's a big ox that doesn't feel anything and he's super balanced and he's very like you know for the challenges that i dealt with with the end cooper. It's like all of the karma that i put in with them. It's all comeback my way with the but he's been a pretty easy one although i'm much more knowledgeable and experienced too. But he's a gem he's he's super easy. It might go finally. Where can we find you on social media and please tell us about your website which i found fascinating again. "Oh, yeah, Like Washington with those indoors, The good thing is have a window or a door And a bad thing is, if it's a crack CEO, it's not sitting right Get it fixed, especially since it's the biggest investment you've got, and make sure that the House Secures. We're heading in towards the winter months. Gonna make sure that you're not sending heat out of the door or out of a window that is not quite insulated correctly, like Washington windows. And Doris couple quick stories to get to by the way, just friend of mine just said Hey, you want to try to set up a meeting between you and Carmen best? Tom? Do we want to talk to Carmen? Best result without Jian Ursula a lot. But yes, I mean, if if she's willing to talk if she is not You know, she's been Mohr now that she's you know, resigned in effect. Yeah, but I'm sure I'd love to talk to her and be great. OK, alright. We hardly ever do any of those interviews. So all right, well, we'll see if my body can come through for us there. Let's see a couple quick stories to get to the body A right to assert my northwest dot com. I don't think the teeny tiny lady she's looking at me right now has chosen a letter the day yet, so they're still pouring in and many people Have also assisted me with my I don't even know what it's called that the thing that dumb idea Thank you. Tokyo has decided. Look out, everybody. We still want to scare you, because that's ah Halloween is all about. We want to be able to the haunted houses we wanted to make his terrifying is possible. Andi rather than coming here. Just being terrified about 14 days later, Coming down with covert 19. We will allow you to come through the haunted house in your car. So you get toe get in your car and go through and they throw blood on you. I think this is a great idea because one of the things they were objecting to the most. Is that the haunted houses because of co vid you couldn't scream because that obviously sends out pellets Nol, so they've figured out a way to do a haunted house where you're in your car. You can scream all you want inside your car and be safe. So I think this is it's brilliant marketing, and it's turned out to be unbelievably popular. They have something like 1000 cars, you know on the waiting list to get in, but I think it's a It's a brilliant idea, and it can be. Their argument is I don't know if we have any sound because it's I would guess would be in Japanese. But the explanation is that this is scarier. They normally do haunted houses. They're they're called in. Translation. The scared the squad. And this guy quit college to end up turning us into a business where they just, you know, have these actor buddies of his and they all dress up in in like horror, zombie things with all sorts of blood spouting forth, he says. This is and so they normally do haunted houses. They say This is actually scared of scarier because you could get much closer. To the people involved a jingle right up to the window so you can get climb onto the car. You can shake the car. You could do so much more than and the people are kind of trapped in the car. It takes 17 minutes to, you know, get through. But then at the end, Of course it's there's a car wash and they washed down the car and they, you know security make it clean for You know, driving afterwards, but I think it's a very clever idea that's turned out to be really popular. I can see it catching on here while we were going to place cuts from it, But Laura's like we have a lot of people to do speak Japanese and they might with people might be some cursing off. That's funny. Okay? And I just Maybe it's may but I don't see Japanese people in their car cursing while people are throwing blood on the windshield is that just means that my own bias should I go to some sort of seminar? Apparently, they can get really close to you and you and what they said to you is you can't normally in a haunted house. You can kind of run away and ran back up the hallway when you're trapped in your car. There's nowhere to run the black lives matter. Protesters They jump on top of people's cars and screaming, yelling, And so it seems something they just don't charge it for you, by the way, Speaking of charges, it's $75. If you bring your own car and its $85 if you want, you know, borrow one of theirs. They have some rentals standing by. I will miss the Beaver Lake scare. I guess they're not going to do that this year, which is a shame. That's ahh, pretty intense Beaver Lake haunted house. It's out near Beaver Lake and Saman Mission. You go in there and you walk through the the pathway and they've got all sorts of stuff set up a bunch of actors and Really fine. My kids there a couple times in both times we stood in line for about Oh, I don't know in the rain and wind blowing it about 42 felt like 20. And then after 20 minutes, they're like Do you like cake? Guys? We have even gone in yet. Ah, Wei guy came by on a horse and look at that. There's a horse that horse And then you gotta go back in line. Scuse me, my kids. They don't want to pay my money back and they'd give your money back. Oh, you mean so you'd never even know he didn't make it in. We're walking. You're standing out in a forest and there just like you. You know how old were they at the time? 17 18 0. Wow, No, I'm kidding. Every child like little kids. I'm so disappointed my kids simply times and stuff like that. Come on, toughen up, Toughen up, and my mom reminded me Remember the time we stood in line is about 150 degrees out in Philadelphia in the summer, and we wanted you wanted to sit on Ronald McDonald's lap, and we waited in line for hours and hours. And then when you got up there you were, like, three away and his face because he had been sitting for so long. His makeup was sort of running down his face. And a smile was elongated. Looks like Joker that Yeah. And then you guys freaked out and said, I don't want to sit on Mom McDonald's lap. There sounds like every sitting on Ronald Collins's lap. That zone haunted house threw. Tic Tac is not the place for our waiters and bartenders to be able to talk about some celebrities that they had a chance to serve. And, of course, then they just out the person as to whether or not they're nice or not nice like this guy. OK, so I served.

"Want banks court. What do you say to someone you know does that and I know you encounter it all the time? They'll bring a picture in and say I wanNA look like her right. I want her hairstyle. Yeah everyone does that you know. And it's usually they're bringing in pictures of women with Fukuda of hair and they don't have not that it's hard to understand that I mean I do it too so if you see a picture of someone with things and you really decide you want them. Think about it and then make the decision when we reopened. Yeah and don't use bad scissors. I've done that too and like really destroyed my hair. Sometimes you know you get a little spontaneous. You're bored. Do make mistakes and then hopefully you'll learn from but you know there's we've got a lot of here that that we want to contribute to to Today to everyone out there listening you know I've heard about a lot of do it yourself hair treatments using like honey and eggs. Pardon if I have but I've said it many times on the air my father who died with a full head of hair by the way used to put olive oil and Apple Cider. Vinegar on his here all the time and I used to joke with them and I would give them a hug. I Say Dad. You smell like a salad. You know and he did. He smelled like a tossed salad. But is the olive oil. I'm guessing based on our conversation so far that my dad was fought on. He was yeah he was doing it right. Your Scalp is the healthier hair is the better Going to be the stronger and going to grow faster. Wow well what about face? Let's talk about the face now. Are there any? "Newsradio twelve hundred w away. I. This is the great outdoors on NewsRadio twelve hundred. Does not have a lot of grants. You know, what we were doing what most of the people that were catching really good strings of fish? And there's a lot of fish caught. It was a good good tournament for the first week or so in January well for any time of the year thirty three pounds stringer bass overlay. Pounds. Good three moreover TM some nine I mean, it was incredible. But I was catching fish in quite a few of the guys was looking for hard bottoms out in the grass areas, though, he was using grasses the key that really was not fishing that much in the grass itself. But says she things like shell beds are railroad beds or anything well hard bottom that camp, the grass growing I caught the majority of fish anti tournament in a small little area. Probably no, no bigger than than a hundred yards circle. Maybe not even a hundred yards. Maybe fifty hard circle. And and it was either at shell bed had a little bit of a road going through it, and he was surrounded by grass, but you know, fishing, the bare bottom area the hard hard bottom area. And, you know, fortunately with our like John IX, we got these days. It's it's a lot easier to find those areas, but but you know, those four criteria and the the main thing is if you will. You know, if you'll just abuse what you know and think about those four things I talked about you'll figure out some some areas to face type areas to look for and then it's just a matter of going out there and finding them when it's a lot of fishing, particularly this time of the year, maybe several hours without a bite to find those. You know, what we all forever all of our lives. Call and there was a boy in that tournament mentioned that he caught a bass in this place where we got all these fish. He caught a bass on twenty nine consecutive throws. Obviously they were loaded up. I remember turning around to my Marshall. I limit every morning by thirty in tournament. I remember turning around to my when I first morning, and and and and making a cast someone out there and cranking. I caught all night on a crank bait. That American ridgeville deep smoothie has also using XP five and red color on Rayburn, and thrown out there in cranking it down and just slowed it down and sit back, and I said, they are stacked there there, aren't they? And and that was about the fourth or fifth a row, I didn't get twenty nine in a row. About this time of the year facial bunch up. And that's the other thing when you catch one stay and really Amer that area. You know, if you like Travis as example, one of the key things they face down. There is both right and the fish get Reynolds boat dachshund dog sometimes individual knocks and the amazing thing you can have let's say a pocket or calls. It's got twenty bucks in it. And maybe there's a fish under all twenty docs. But maybe there's one doc in that co that's got fifty or one hundred hundred. So when you find that dog you found that that Honey held right? And and you can finish the whole tournament. You know, go to that one dock, and what we've we I've seen that happen on on various different kind of like I actually found it at one time myself af tournament, and like Somalia and caught basically every fish tournament of one dock, and it was in a line of dogs that probably had thirty kids face off have occasionally on that one dog you live in every single day of the tournament. Actually Jay Ellis wanna tournament on beaver lake that exact on one dog. And you know, the imagine if you could go down, and and and scuba dive around that you'd probably just blow your way how many facial probably down there. That's true. They're bunched up this time of the year. They're going to kind kinda like those turkeys. You know, you you you've got tons of hunters listening, and they know that this time of year when you out deer hunting you see Turkey's you'll see your hot. Fifteen hundred about Jenner either all hands are all Gabrielle bass or doing the exact same thing right now. I know your big Terry hundred. That's why you mentioned it. Are you going to be up my world here? Four loan or another month two or three. You know? I don't. Yeah. I don't know. If I have anything scheduled down there right now, we got a really busy schedule has always, you know, leave here next Thursday and go, Indiana, and I've got a tracker brownies brain, I go to tackle store. I go from there to Guatemala, and I'm gonna go down and use a delta airline rather than a caravan. You know, they use a caravan for those water Malla trips. Also, those are one way trips caravan, Tampa helping gonna take me down fishing and bring me back, and then we got another tournament coming up at in in Toho. So we got really busy schedule. You know? I was with Peyton Manning. Demi drop some names. Okay. This week this week. I was hanging out with a guy named Peyton Manning. He plays football a little bit. Yeah. I guy guy named Luke Bryan who picks. Things a little bit. Yeah. And a guy named Martin ex drives a car really really fast. Yeah. Hey, just goes ran around though. Yeah. Really really well at Luke Snyder a guy that gets on bulls and tries to stay on their long. And we were over at the bass pro shop in Springfield this week, a great, you know, bass pro shops, and Cabela's is a company that, you know, you don't have to wait around very long for something new exciting to happen. And. We were over there at the introduction for tracker off roads, and you might figure out real quickly. What tracker off-road he has tracker are building their own four wheelers and UTD. So we have you have a tracker boat. And now, you can have a.

So I want to admire it because someone has got to make the statement. This was a beautiful thing that I just did and the cheering of the fans not good enough that not for me. I don't think the tearing of the fans cheering on the home run was simply saying, hey, we got an extra run and the fans in me looking at the the the ball, going out with me saying, yeah, you know, that's pretty good looking. Isn't that interesting. Well, did you will what happens? You hit any homers when he went to the Beaverton beams, they weren't the beefs with the Beaverton beef. Hi, Don egging. I'm doing pretty good. I was doing better before. I heard you because I watched a lot of your games. I, I used to go to the beaver falls beef games, and I was a big fan and I saw you and I think that you really ruined it for a lot of the players. Well, why? Why did he say I wasn't even let me let me finish. You ruined it for a lot of the players because the Beaverton, the beaver falls, beef, Br, just disbanded, and it was because of you. How do you figure that? How do I figure that? Because you'd stand there and look at your home, run balls. And you'd wag a finger at the fans. I the reason why is because I was wedding the wedding advances to say, why aren't you at barring a beautiful it is we cheered for the ball going out. Wasn't that good enough? No, I guess it wasn't at not quite good enough because you've got. Yeah, great. That's run. But look at how beautiful what the thing is, what I just did you know the thing, what you just did. Well, thanks to you. The fans stop coming and the beaver and the beef. He's so he was the death of the beef in beaver falls. Now I heard similar stories in Beaverton, and there was a t. by by the way you didn't, the team also played for beaver lake. I forget how the beaver like beef, so and all of those teams without without exception all of those teams where the result of an disbanded is the result of your e them. I did not play for the beaver lake beef, but by that point it had been just polluted. Everyone knew that there had been a guy on the team that would stand there. And say, yeah, look at my home runs. Well, you sound very, very bitter. Heke awfully, sorry. I'm not. I'm not bitter..
