"Know. Why I have these lovely people in the studio. Meanwhile, it we have the the the mayor coming up at seven thirty seven to talk about the way most story you're excited about that. And some other things, but in the front page of the Detroit News, and you've been talking about it too. We have our I won't be our first real showdown in Lansing with the the governor. And the the the road budget there. They cut out the gas tax, and Yup, she says it makes her way to her desk. She's not signing. She's being towing. It right. That's a long way away from that happening, though, vote is well, there's been no there's no other parts of the budget that are in place yet. I mean, she's threatening a veto of something that is quite far away. Oh, all right. I thought maybe this was no parts of the budget or even gone through a committee yet of other parts of the budget, the road budget is one part of the larger budget and the Republicans say they're going to tackle it. But it's going to be after auto insurance reform. That's what they say. They want to handle. All right as long as they actually get something done. I'll be I'll be standing by them. And and all of that. Yeah. How ever your question originally? Yes. This is the first showdown over this issue. All right. The the robots are invading, Detroit Too. And these kids these brilliant kids from around the country in the first robotics competition at Cobo center, beautiful Cobo center, they love Cobo center. I think there were. We've did it last year? We were there broadcasting like fifteen thousand plus kids that were that were there in it, and then thousands of others family members and all following it in. That's that is certainly good news. The other. Information story, of course, is at the it's always a big deal when the vice president of the United States of America comes to town. And that is indeed what is happening today. Vice President Mike Pence and back in Michigan today talking. Well, he's he's going to talk trade Jonathan hosting says talking trade tour Ford Motor Company plant help ramp up the election efforts of President Donald Trump for twenty twenty doing an event, I don't go to the political events fundraisers. Unless it's the only way I can get to somebody to interview them. I don't pay ever because I'm not supporting I mean, I I deal pretty obvious in my support areas. But I don't do that in the we're missing the opportunity to speak with the vice president who's been a fine guest on the program two or three times. But the idea of coming back to the studio at four thirty to do a phone interview with him didn't make sense to me. I mean, we do him on the phone all the time. If we could have worked out a face to face interview. Again, we will do that. But we couldn't in them not able to come back at four thirty because of other things I've got to do. So that's the reason we're not gonna have the vice president today. But we always wish him. Well, think he's a great guy, and is probably the best reason that level headed Democrats don't want to really remove this president from office currently because then Mike Pence would become the president and give him a leg up on the re election in twenty twenty as an incumbent does that make sense, politically speaking? Yes, it does politically speaking. Well, unfortunately, when you're talking about Washington or lancing for that matter, that's all you're talking anymore. It's politically speaking. I you're much more sports oriented than I am. I really have liked Blake Griffin with the pistons. I just think he's a hard working good guy. Do you do use us star? Yeah. He's he is a star grading. He had a great season with the pistons this past year, and you know, what he did at the at basically the good-bye press conference. He went around and shook the hands of every press guy there, which is unusual. That's that's the relationship is not always positive being the players far from it. Yeah. But he he the with his hurt leg all went around and shook hands with all of the press people gathered for their last basic press conference of the season. I like him. I hope they keep them. I don't know. How all that works there. Is he locked in for a while? I think he is. Yeah. He's got a multi year contract. Lots of money. It would take quite a trade to get him out of Detroit. But I hope he stays. Yeah. Me too. All righty. It is six forty-three on this Wednesday morning Victor. Yes. That Victor is it a studio with his lovely daughters. Katie and Julia, and he's got some things to talk with us about we have a few questions, and he has a new product that could save you a tremendous amount of money, and like Prince Charles, I'm all ears to wanna hear about it. Thank you. That's coming up. It's coming up in just a moment this week's IHS market minute. With Stephanie Brindley is brought to you by borgwarner borgwarner, your partner in propulsion systems..

"News talk seven sixty WJR substituting, Steve Courtney. Welcome back into the plot. W Smith show here on seven sixty WJR Mr Smith on vacation throughout the week the show as they say must go on Steve Courtney here happy to be the dubs sub. And earlier this morning made mention of the fact that it is not going to be a very nice weather Monday for sure keep an eye out for the good fellows. The news Detroit Free Press. Good fellows, indeed going to be out peddling papers, making sure that no kitty goes without a Christmas, a dollar or anything you care to give with more on that joining us in studio here. Happy to have with us, Mr. Marshall hunt, president of the goodfellas. Hello marshal high c thanks so much for giving me a little bit of airtime this morning. It is my pleasure, sir. It just seems Marshall like it was just yesterday that the public peace Michelle doing the tribute breakfast broadcast it beautiful Cobo center, and now all of a sudden, it's Showtime. Yeah. That was a great event. We really appreciate Paul W. Broadcasting from Cobo center for us. But today of sales day a tradition going back to nineteen fourteen where we're out there on the street corners in Detroit a little bit sloppy today. But it is November. It is Michigan. It's been known to be like this in November in our great state Marshall. No question about it. But for those who are going to be out moving the newspapers, they do such a wonderful job. And we know that the end game is so very important. It is a slogan Marshall that bears repeating no kitty without a Christmas. Well, that's right. We're planning to distribute thirty three thousand packages this year, two children in Detroit and some of the surrounding communities and sales day is a great way to get the holiday season started last year we raised over forty six thousand sales day. It's a it's a start. Fundraising? We need to raise one point two five million this year run our way, but we still need help from everybody to meet that goal and Marshall like so many others that are out doing great work for those who can't fend for themselves. How many volunteers and volunteers are suing the backbone of everything the good follow says stood for for years and years. How many will be out today? Well, we have a couple hundred members I think hundred or more will be out today, perhaps perhaps more we'll have to see, but we get a pretty good turnout from the membership. We also have a lot of other volunteers that help us at package distribution than we have doll dressers that help us dull address nine thousand dollars for a girls four through four or nine. Well, keep the good work going air marshal. We certainly appreciate you stopping by the Fisher building this morning. And again, it is. Is not going to be a very nice weather day. So while you're out and about please, please please keep your eyes open for the goodfellas out there doing what they do. Thank you so much Steve. All right. "The euro award at this twenty ninth annual breakfast here at beautiful Cobo center in the mayor sitting across from me, we already spoke to him here. And you heard him I have been saying all morning long. This is an especially good award. And especially sweet moment for you. Because this is the Edward h McNamara Goodfellow of the euro award, and you are protege. He was your mentor for many years, you were a young man when he kind of took you under his wing and taught you a lot. Now, he made me deputy county executive when I was twenty eight years old. And I was in the room when he came up with the idea for this breakfast, the goodfellas were huge part of his life, and he and Coleman young first year co-hosted. And when you listen to the two of them, the sixties or seventies. At that point talk about when the police officer showed up at their door with toys and the way their eyes would light up sixty years later. It's remarkable. How important this initiative is we never roll out the kids, but we have lots of kids that are adults here. Now who readily admit that that was the only prison they got for Christmas that year. Yeah. And Ernie Lofton, great UAW. Vice president was one of the leaders every year. He would say it was the one day of the year. We're happy to see the police at the door. You had you had a whole bunch of folks with very different backgrounds. We're all United by that same experience of the goodfellas gifts at Christmas. Yeah. You had a very special happening last night where everyone's United in the neighborhood. You went right to the people who would be affected by things in the people spoke with one voice. It was remarkable. Of course, we're talking about the Ford project at the train station in council president Brenda Jones. Had initiated something to the voters ultimately adopted, which is called the community benefits ordinance where the only city in America that has one and what it says is when you have a major project before the tax breaks are considered by council, you meet with the neighbors to see what they want because they're going to be most effective. And so you have a neighborhood committee of nine people a few pointed by me a few appointment of counsel. And if you elected by the neighbors themselves, and they held a dozen meetings where they talked about what are we want? Let's preserve our parks base. Let's preserve our low income housing. So people aren't pushed out, let's make sure Detroiters are trained for jobs, and after a dozen meetings last night, they voted nine zero. You mentioned this. When was the last time think of your your own neighborhood was the last time you had your neighbors all totally agree. But right, right at at this is the way the process was designed which you had some people who said open spaces, the most important thing to me others who said, hey, these are going to be technology jobs. We need to put some more money in the Detroit public schools. So our children can get the kind of science training others said I don't want. My neighbor who's renting at a relatively low rate to be pushed out and Ford and the city addressed all those issues the satisfaction of all nine members. And that's the way it should happen. We'll bring in five thousand jobs and seven hundred fifty million dollars investment into a neighborhood with the neighborhood leaders are unanimously saying we wanted, and I just my hat's off to Brenda Jones and the process that she initiated, but we're proving this can work. Well, you know over the years I've introduced you to then introduce and give the award to the recipient this year. Introduce Brenda Jones who will then give you the the award. Yeah. And you know, I think about, you know, the days when I sit there the day is is pretty young beheaded watched Ed McNamara. Coleman young. And so there's lines that came on guy. What Brandon are not nearly as funny as the no question about it. Nearly as funny as those those two and Brooks Patterson, I think probably politicians I've what lighters. You know, we're at a class by themselves. So it probably won't be funny. But it'll be just a special, and and you know, Brooks is the only one left. He's the only one left standing, and it's tough for bricks because the things that those guys said back then that were funny people don't laugh at as much anymore. It's kinda sad. We'll also stuff that is funny. As it used to be. You two aspects of that. I'm just saying that, you know, generational. The things that used to be okay and used to be funny are not anymore. I mean, you'll give me that. There's no question that, you know, with all the social media, and the the immediate reaction to everything that said that's just the reality that we live with. But you can complain about it or you can you could do better move with it. I try really hard not to say things that would cause somebody inadvertently to be bothered by anything else going on. We should know about Mr Mayor before we let you go and get up on the diocese. No. I'm very excited to come and get this award and go right back to work. It is extra special. Isn't it? Ed McNamara award. It definitely definitely is it brings back a lot of memories. And you know, we still last two nights ago. We're watching the Detroit Lions beat the patriots and Ford field that was built never would build. Ed McMahon had been county executive. And so you think about the impact that he still has. Of course, every time you fly in and out of metro airport. There's a terminal wouldn't be there if it weren't for McNamara. And and this is a nice reminder naming the award the goodfellas award after what are you going to do with the award? Where are you going to put it had a Cup with my picture on it before I kind of walk yet? So it's nice all with where they become the the Goodfellow of the year. There's a coffee Cup waiting on every table. And it does. In fact, have the recipient in this case mayor Mike Duggan face on that. It's funny. There was a little disorienting committed. But now we gotta spot in the shelf at the Manoukian for it. And it'll it'll be a welcome addition. Congratulations to you and to Laurie and the old news boys Goodfellow fund of Detroit, presenting our city of Detroit mayor Mike Duggan with the Edward h McNamara Goodfellow of the year award if this twenty ninth annual tribute breakfast that Mike Duggan Hispanic from and supportive of from the beginning. Congratulations. I'll see up there. All right. Thanks seven fifty four it WJR seven fifty five five minutes away from eight o'clock, WJR, traffic.

Goodfellow of the year award will be extra special to mayor Mike Duggan who was a protege of Mr. McNamara. I'll bet will hear something about Eddie Mack from mayor dug into the maybe he'll have a special inside. Story or two days there with the Wayne County executive Livonia mayor and political kingmaker around here. That he was and yes, I'm sure he will have a insight or two on this Tuesday September twenty fifth the two hundred sixty eighth day of two thousand eighteen there are ninety seven days left in the year. Well, done Michael. And of course, we want you to make each and every day count because each day is a gift Mike Parsons in handling the duties while Brian is off on a little vacation. Well deserved rest. That means he didn't have to go to bed at six o'clock last night. Or eight PM like Steve Courtney used. In high school. Yeah. Still goes to bed at Courtney, say eighty clarksdale. Yeah. Right. Brian got beat by two hours. And I have both of the beat by about ten hours. What was that? Tony an hour. Tony, Tony Tony Butler who was our engineer engineered Grand Rapids. Yesterday is our engineer here at beautiful Cobo center. He got an hour and a half of sleepless night, an hour and a half crazy. These hours for these for these kids. That's how Tony can be everywhere everywhere. It is everywhere everywhere. All the Michigan games all the different things that go on. Well, we had an amazing schedule that no radio station in town could handle we had three different remotes going on yesterday. We were at Grand Rapids. Frank was in Kalamazoo and guy was in Kalamazoo also. But at different locations where they. Yeah. So otherwise the stories not nearly as good if they broadcast from the same location, so three different events at walking down the out. Like, this is a movie here comes Christopher Illitch. Who's my next guest coming up here on the Paul W Smith show on WJR? It's seven twelve. Time.
