"As usual we wrap things up with the critics corner this week's new arrivals include undone on Amazon unbelievable on Net flicks and American Horror Story Nineteen eighty-four on FX Dan. What's cooking well? I if I had not seen American Horror Story Nineteen eighty-four as if I have said many times I'm looking forward to watching the first few episodes and quitting as usual but I can't tell you if it's better or worse than usual fortunately though there are actually a lot of things things to watch this week and really the main new releases are all pretty good to very good. Unbelievable is Netflix exes this I would say it is complementary to mind hunter. It is to some degree. It's the story of two detectives played by Merit Weaver in Toni Collette investigating a serial rape case. There's also a story line involving Caitlyn deavere as one of the victims potentially of the same serial rapist. Maybe maybe not it is intense and it sounds like it is unpleasant to watch or could could be unpleasant to watch. It is less wallowing than it could be. I would say that the creators Suzanne grants who wrote Erin Brockovich among other things is the primary creator along with a let Waldman and Michael Chaban and it has a really good grasp of tone. It never goes to dark. It has is very good insight into the criminal investigative process what works what doesn't sometimes it's even funny and that has a lot to do with the fact that Moore Weaver in Tony any clutter just wonderful together. It's based on a Pulitzer Prize winning propublica article and I could honestly watch multiple seasons of this or up Toni Collette Leadin Merit Weaver being awesome Caitlyn deavere also awesome. I thought the eighth episode of the eighth. Maybe is a drop in quality. Maybe a little bit more contrived and conventional conventional than the first seven but it's an impressive piece of economical and powerful storytelling then undone which sounds like it should be right. They're also alphabetically which is very important comes from a Raphael Bob Wax Bergen keep purdy who have worked together on Bo Jack Horseman on Netflix. This one is on an Amazon and it is a twisty turny wrote a scoped story about a young woman who becomes unstuck in time and reality after a car the accident and her father voiced by Bob Odenkirk actually played by Bob Odenkirk because that's how wrote a scope works tells her that she has the power to help. nope basically solve the mystery of his death or murder. Main character is played by Rosa Salazar who people will know maybe from alita battle angel or for man seeking woman. She's she's very good. It is not as funny or Quirky as Beau Jack Horsemen but is is visually magnificent the the the rotor scoping technology and the work done by director his Co.. Housing is is stunning to look at. I didn't care about the murder mystery really at all but I love watching this this is this is such a beautiful show to watch and sometimes it's funny. Sometimes it has some big thoughts in its mind. It's Jerry Interesting Are you gonNa Watch either of those two this weekend direction. I actually just started binging elites. I'm probably going to finish that and then I'm hopefully to watch some baseball this weekend. I'm hopefully going to sit out by the pool. That all sounds good if you need a little bit more TV I can also to some degree. Recommend showtimes murderer on the by you. Showtime is getting into the same true. Crime miniseries extended storytelling market that netflix dominated that obviously Amazon has done some. I'm working. A bunch of folks have done it. It's about the investigation into the deaths of young women in a single Louisiana small town. It is full of rather rather mind boggling details miscarriages of justice. It is absolutely difficult to watch. It's a Lotta graphic. Talk about you know people selling their bodies is selling their souls and smoking crack with their parents but it is you're trying to do right there. It doesn't look like it's that exciting small town so apparently you gotta do what you gotTa do it is harrowing but sometimes gripping and mind boggling to watch a lot of pretty good TV to watch this weekend. I would say so there. You

Just look like flags I just interrupted you again. Red red flag right there. Yeah. I talk a lot you shouldn't drop me because I ended up people. Well, hey, you just you just been going through some of the stuff these victims have been doing. And there you go. Well, let's just 'cause I've libra my chart, so whoa. Whoa. Now. I am going to enter allergies been brought that's the excuse. I need to to throw my logic brain, let me tell you. Why clap the hood of my car whenever I speed through a red light. Because men are not superstitious. They know things. Yeah. Like, if you have the hood of your car when you run through a red light, the police can't catch you. Oh, that's why I do it. And I make a wish. Oh, okay. Cool that the police won't catch me that the police will just feel like we're both doing the same thing there. Okay. So that. Yeah. There were some red flags. But yeah, it's easy to see how she could have ignored them at first kitty found herself drawn more and more into our Kelly's world, she was a fresh divorce say back on the dating field for the first time in years and not really into dating sucks. Dating on just like meeting random places is not the best thing ever. So having this rich famous guy who's art she loved fly her all around the world and treat her like, the only woman on earth seem pretty fucking great. You can see how it would wipe some of those flags way. And why it would make her forget the unsettling news reports she'd been hearing about Kelly for years, they did come up in conversations with her friends, quote, rob kinda makes you feel like you have to defend him. It's like you and him against the world. If someone brought him up in conversation, immediately, a wall went up some of the stuff Kelly told her was like that his girlfriend had died, and he'd watched her die when he was eight. You know, you talked about his mom dying. When we started the story is easy archaelogist talking about his background can get you on a side of it. Like he's been through some shit, and he'd just been declared not guilty and a quarter law. You can again took attender bio not guilty in a court of law. That's actually my whole resume. Yeah. Yeah. Not in prison. Currently so in September of two thousand eleven kitty Jones flew to Chicago to visit our Kelly's Trump Tower apartment. Robert sent his driver to pick her up from the airport in order, not to talk to him into report back if he talked to her from this point, she started noticing that all the men in Kelly's orbit kept a strict distance from her in total their relationship lasts more than two years. Could he Jones did the thing that I think Hollywood has taught all of us to do. She casts caution to the wind let love into her heart and gave up everything to embark on a magical journey with a rich suitor, how many romantic comedies have the same basic plot working woman, and like a high demand career, like a radio DJ or an architect or whatever. You know, suddenly meets this ridiculously wealthy man who sweeps her offer.

"And then there's acting which Aparna has been doing more of she was in the Anna Kendrick movie, a simple favor TV shows like crashing on HBO and beau Jack horseman on net flicks where she plays a young horse who may be the daughter of the shows tischler depressed alcoholic horse. It's a really good show. What's your first name highly hawk and your last name Mannheim, Mandarin Guerrero, Robinson's over sung funds early Macuac? Wait. What's your last name? I know it's confusing. I have eight dads that happened test tubes. No, I was at opted. Of course, I eight men in committed gay poly-amorous relationship Lewis, of course, ever since I was a baby people always said, I looked like bojenka horsemen votes. The terrible thing to say to a baby. And as always wondered if Bo Jack could be my biological sperm guy. I guess as possible bowl Jack uses as Pena's his like sun dried tomatoes back in the nineties. It got into everything I came to LA get she missed out on the camaraderie of being part of the on samba making that show. Most of the cast is in LA and the director and the in the writers. So whenever I would go into record or even do a table read. I would just be by myself in New York like in a sound booth by myself, and then everyone else would be on the other end. So in that sense. It was weird because it still. Felt isolating in a way because I would always record by myself, or you know, even with the time zone difference. A lot of my actual recording sessions would just be me. And the director just the two of us. So it was almost like I did it in a vacuum. And then I later saw how it all came together. But I guess in that sense it spoke to how divergent sometimes and in the process, you're playing a character who's in a world that they don't really feel a part of an your family's far far away. Yeah. So it was a kind of meta level say method acted and really did a more comfortable job is on the comedy central show corporate Aparna plays grace, a cog in the machinery of giant corporation, relaxing. The average employee is half, man. Half woman. They have one testicle one breath and half of the Jonah every year, the average employee consumes five hundred sixty one cups of coffee and. Coffee this camp taking into billion employees strongly agrees with the following phrase. If I see a pill eat a pill. They smoked two hundred seventy five cigarettes annually ninety seven marijuana cigarettes and due to some statistical outliers Pierre virgin ploy does heroin. The show is created by comedians. She knew and when she makes it she can relax a bit. Yeah. I liked the group aspect of it where you're kind of part of this process and everything works together to or everyone works together to make this one thing. And I kind of like being just a small part of a bigger thing. That's happening. But yeah. With corporate I think I got lucky because I'm working with my friends. And and we we have like a pre existing report with each other. So it doesn't feel as much like just going in with people, you might not know as well. And and acting but stand up tends to be at the center of comedians life, and it's not hard to notice that depression is often at the center of Aparna standup. She talks about it. She calls it by name. She doesn't glamorize it or make it scary. It's just a real thing. I'm going to surprise I met someone..

"Horsemen often embraces goofy wacky slapstick from Todd starting school for dentists clowns to this running gag of Princess Caroline's tongue. Twisters courts me if you can Cam in nineteen forties cans, France, set story of a cancan dancer who contracts cancer, but continues to can-canada Canada cadaver who plays the accordion with Kevin Corrigan. Kevin kline. Chris Klein, Chris pine and Chris Catan gutting. But it's not all silly. A lot of the show is pretty dark a melancholy exploration of deeply flawed individual who self loathing alcoholism and drug addiction lead him to disrespect his girlfriend's alienate his friends and in this latest season, physically assault someone. Right. We've made it so wrong. You can never go back. The latest season looks at the often messy process of what it takes to really deal with your actions and earn forgiveness. Todd's will look interviewed Bocek horsemen's creator, Rafael, Bob wax, Berg. Here's their conversation Raphael. What a pleasure thanks for being with us. Thank you, the pleasure mind. Well, I want to do some disclosure at the very top of this ordinarily an interview like this. The host is is supposed to have distance and not much of an opinion, maybe about what they're covering. I just want to disclose it. I'm a fan. I mean this. You have got a hit on your hands Raphael season five on net flicks. But I've always wondered sort of what constitutes a hit now in the world of subscription TV stride. I don't know. I mean, I I've seen our show described as a smash hit a sleeper hit a cult heads a flop. Nobody's watching it. Everybody's watching it. I have no idea. All I know is some people seem to like it and that works for me, and we keep being allowed to make more. So that's that's good for me to just take a minute. Who is your Jack horseman who is he? Well, we spent five seasons exploring that. And I still don't know if we know the answer. No, bodak horsemen is a horse. Who is also a man it's a it's an animated show for adults, and I can already hear the listener maybe changing the channel. But I don't think it's necessarily people are expecting when they hear an animated show for adults. And that I think is the magic of the show, and that's the appeal for me is that unlike other animated shows that are very status quo oriented and self contained ours is a show that evolves and changes over time over the course of five seasons. The characters have changed. The relationships have changed their consequences to the character's actions. And it's really for me a show about sadness and melancholy and. Relation. Which I guess there are other cartoons like that. But it's not just about having fun and being silly. Although there's also very fun and silly you've really kind of cornered me. I'm not quite sure describe this. Are you think it'd be better about it by now? But I'll tell you the plot the plot. It's a it's a horseman in the ninety s he was on TV show called horsing around about a horse racing three human kids. Now, he's a washed up actor he lives in the Hollywood hills. And he complains about everything. That's that's where he is or refers to find him and over the course of the last five seasons. A lot of other things have happened. He was on a show back in the nineties. It was essentially I would say like a full house type of Shurmur sitcom, a real peace. It has its fans. Horsing around. I I think some people watch beau Jack horsemen and they go. Yeah. This is okay. But I'd really much rather watch horsing around so each their own well, beau, Jack, though, he had fame and success plenty of money. Nice house. He is a deeply unhappy person in Hollywood he has a good sense of humor. He has fun sometimes misery and depression as you said 'isolation and loneliness are never too far away for him. Yeah. That's right. It's a comedy. Yeah. He he's he's a sad guy. And I pride myself on the fact that we take that sadness, very seriously, and we explore in some ways the root cause of it. And also the effect that it has on others. I think this is a show about loneliness. And I think that is why it appeals to so many people because there aren't a ton of people who are on successful sitcoms in the eighties and nineties, but there are a lot of people who feel lonely sometimes. And I think those people can see something of themselves in bo-, Jack, not only VO Jack a man, but his troubling personality is set in Hollywood that seems like the worst possible place for someone like him. He's got damaged self esteem. He selfish. He's got a substance abuse problem. That's the that's the tip of the iceberg really for beau Jack and he lives in inhabits a world with all the wrong enabling forces. It seems to me. That really push against him. I know I'm over analyzing VO, Jack. But it also is a send up about Hollywood. Yeah. And I think that's exactly right. That in many ways this town in this industry is the worst place to be if you're someone who needs limits and help because this is a town. That's that's built up to help you not get help and to enable you and allow you your worst vices. You know, I think a big fear of mine as someone who is found some success in this industry, and may continue to find more is that eventually we'll get to a place where people stop telling me, I'm wrong. We'll make some very big mistakes. I'm lucky right now that I've surrounded myself with people who are not afraid to tell me when I'm screwing up, and when I need to apologize. And when I need to check myself and ask for help. I think it's very easy in this town to find the people who won't do that. And then I think you're in real trouble. Well, David pacman writes about your show, he says that beau Jack horseman is the only animated show that's made me belly laugh Saab and sit in shocked. Silence. All in the course of a single episode is that what you're going for hitting all these different notes in in in a single go. Yes. We're very ambitious, and I think one of the things I enjoyed that. The show keeps it fresh for me is that it's a lot of different things. And we I think we have a lot of different audiences who enjoy the show for different reasons. Right. So there are people who say this is the funniest show I've ever seen, and it makes me cry. And it makes me think and made me call my mom. And then there are also sections of that there are people who say, you know, I don't find this show. Very funny at all. But it moves me, and I care about the characters, and there are also people who say, I think shows hilarious, and I don't care about the characters at all. But I love the jokes. And I think this is the show for all of those people. And depending on what you go into it looking for you're going to get something different out of it. And that's really fun for me. And that makes every day of work fun because they come in and go, okay. What kinda show do? I wanna make today and that can change. Yes. Sometimes one episode or sometimes even within one scene or even within one line of dialogue. You could start heartbreaking and Larry as we start with some goofy wordplay an end with a real bummer. And I wanted to ask you exactly about that time on the show because. Because on one level. You've got a lot of crafty sometimes corny word play a lot of a lot of lot of slapstick. Lot of Antioch jokes that could be on any sort of children's cartoon it has to be fun for adults as well. Right overlaid on a lot of deep satire, and then overlay that on some of the deepest at times most troubling emotional staff that I've seen on television. I mean, slapstick pratfalls and I've had to look away from Bojan once or twice. Well, it's it's funny because I sometimes people tell me when they meet me at like a bar mitzvah or something. Oh, my, you know, my son loves that show and again. Have you seen and they go? No. But my son loves it. Twelve years old. And it's a very adult show and not because of the drug humor the sex humor. Which of course, there is plenty of that and swearing as well, but because I think it it goes to some very deep dark adults places, and I use that word adults to mean complicated and nuanced and troubling. And so I definitely not a show for kids. But I think one thing we found when we were making the first season is we wanted it to be silly. And we wanted it to also be serious. And the question was can we do both. And one thing we found is that. Yes, we can. And rather than. Water itself down. It actually helps the show to to have both these polls. And that to me, I think it creates kind of a. A savory and sweet salted caramel kind of sensation where it is both very real and sincere and melancholy, but also very bright and silly and cartoony, and that I think the farther you go in one direction almost counter intuitively the farther that allows you to go in the other direction. And I don't think we've found a limit yet for how silly we can go or how dark and introspective we can go. I think our our latest season might be both are silliest dark guests at the same time. We're gonna talk a lot.

We call it casual because it's easy to put ashore. Yes. Does that word that they use in the cost play parlins casual causeway. Easy. Easy to walk on Adams you before? It was like the comfortable lob people design their creative 'cause plays to be the the lounge where version Jaama version because these parts go go late. So it's the same fabric or some of the instant patterns and to to make it look like what the character would wear when having a Manhattan. I'm part of the group, the Simpson's group called the Stonecutters, oh, where we have our initiation on Saturday night and we walk around and sing songs and. I'm also don't give away the secrets and then I have one matchup. That's really ridiculous. I'll be curious with that group thinks of renaissance or whatever the new show is on Netflix disenchantment. That's it. Gosh, that's it. Wasn't that bad that was done. This words shared this only a couple of letters. Are they similar number of syllables anyway, I'll be curious with that group thinks they're more into stone cutting. Have fun Schorr be safe out there and if you if you listeners out there and if you're going to drag, please tweet us your pictures because we're really bummed. I'm really bummed I this year. They'll does a good like walk around and point out the the techniques that went into crafting a lot of the Qasr plays out there. So it's a lot of fun to walk around. Oh, is he kind of like a like a wildlife observer can naturalist like I wanted to do the voice over. I wanna comb the James Gunn of Qasr play, but I don't think he. Not the Richard Attenborough does like, and then the the stonecutter group that is definitely foam. Mat caused play take into the extreme widsom incredible barging at the cei-. We see young 'cause player on his fourth costume. I think it's a brilliant idea. I think you should make that video fill to spill. No, you need to get a lot of releases though, were nature nature documentary. Yeah, yeah. As Decca would say via credit to your field of, okay, don't don't shame us. Fair enough. The one conclave I've heard of that I really wanna see is someone is doing Thanos hands Effat like Manno Santa fate, the, yeah, yeah, the riff traps thing. Well, they've done it. Yeah, that I want. I have no idea what to expect too weird growth. And then there's obviously some incredible place boasted already too. I think there's a ghostwriter coming with that that actually has like flames and smoke out of the helmet nineties PBS show ghost writer. No. Sorry. Are we going straight into pop culture? Let's go strain. The pop culture. All right. I'll lot of publisher news this week is about, well, our favorite one of our favorite topics streaming.

"Courtney welcome to one a.. Hi, thanks for having me. Talk about where you're at right now artistically emotionally in these songs. How how do you really feel these days. Such a big question, I feel pretty good. You know, I, I just turned thirty last year and I feel like somehow that. I don't know. I feel like I stepped of some sort of line, but I don't know. It's still I'm still lost still kind of figuring it out everyday trying to figure figure stuff out, but I feel pretty grateful and just doing it. There are still people trying to figure out thirty when they're like fifty. So don't feel bad, and it may take a while. Talk about the title of the album word that title come from? Well, it was a line in in one of the songs before before I decided it was going to be the album title I really was was working on the album title for a long time and not coming up with anything and then and then that kind of jumped out as as this really kind of flexible line that could be interpreted from many different angles, which I, which I quite liked and and it kind of I don't know. It meant a lot. A lot of different things to me, whether it's something people have said to me. Me in in kind of complete in tennis or ho Sok Hasim and yeah, it seemed like a good kind of over. It's one of those things people say at a lot of different ways where they really mean to hear what you feel or whether they're like, oh, tell me how you really feel. It's it's one of those things people say earnestly and and kind of phone early in the same breath. Yeah. And I, I like those two kind of contrast. Then I think you know the a lot of the songs that I was riding like when I was riding I was, I guess I was trying to kind of dig deeper and figure out figure out. Yeah, how I felt about setting things and so it kind of made sense. We definitely want to have you play for us in just a few minutes, but I also wanted to ask you about another theme that appears often in your songs and that's mental illness. Some listeners might recognize your song of Gardner in which you. Meticulously describe having a severe panic attack that sent you to the hospital. If you've heard season two of beau Jack horseman on Netflix, it's the song that plays over the end credits on the new album. Tell me how you really feel. There are moments like on the song charity where you saying you don't have to pretend you're not scared. Everyone else is just as terrified as you singing about panic attacks is not something most singers like to get into. That's kind of touchy territory. How is it for you having your work associated with such difficult unpleasant, painful things. Does that bother you? Is that a badge of pride for you? How do you reflect on that? I think I just kind of take it as it comes. I'm in its may, China, China, wicks trees as I think all of my sons are just trying to figure feelings and situations out. Very, very openly and to whoever's willing to listen. Tell us about how you compose a song. What's your process? Like? I think it's always a bit different. I sometimes they just take a long time and sometimes they'd quite short, but I ride a whole lot more than I kind of than I play and I, I don't know. I kind of just have books of of ideas and poems and and and over time kind of melting together. And you know, there's some songs in these new album that that I kind of technically started riding on when I was thirteen thirteen. Yeah. So they kind of sometimes they date back a fair while and and wh-what came out of your thirteen year old days that made it onto this album?.
