Roger Schulman: Lee County Sheriff Doesn't Have Reason to Lie

"Roger, that's peculiar that the league county sheriff would make that statement today and it sounds like governor desantis was a little bit more cautious about the assertion that hundreds of people have been killed. Yeah, it was interesting. He also made that comment to the hillsborough county sheriff in a phone call last night on a satellite phone while he was standing on top of the roof of a bearcat vehicle trying to do some rescuing. It looks pretty bad down there and he has no reason to inflate things. I think we are going to have some pretty gruesome discoveries there. And hopefully he is wrong. But I don't think he is inflating a carbon arsinoe is a pretty level headed guy. That seems like a vision. That seems like, but governor desantis seems to suggest that might have been based on the 9-1-1 calls, but nonetheless. That's hundreds of people. There's a big difference between one to two confirmed fatalities as of this moment and hundreds. Well, we're going to find out soon. They are going in as we speak to check on these people through the water and we'll know more probably in the next few hours.

"bearcats" Discussed on Bloomberg Radio New York

"He's got it. Touchdown. Bearcats. Alec pierce. So if you can imagine a Michael Pittman and his contested catch kind of capability and Alec pierce now a deep threat backing defense is off a little bit of Jonathan Taylor. He might be even better this year. So who knows? Well, Chris, now you're right in our Wheelhouse here. I mean, you're talking the wide receiver position and we have witnessed a massive re rating of the top, both in free agency. I'm talking to Monte Adams, Tyree kill, cop, AGB you name it, as well as the draft, right? I mean, we had a lot of wide receivers go in the first round. And so my question for you is with all this money that's getting paid to the wide receiver position. What does this mean for teams for general managers looking to build a champion? Yeah, it has me calling my agent and asking, do I have any potential of a comeback at all? Whenever they're making $40 million a year now it's insane. But I think it is exactly where the league is going. And even more so this year because it hasn't been talked about a whole lot yet, but the league is going to really crack down on illegal contact penalties this year. And the reason is that scoring has been moving downwards. Just ever so little, but a little bit. And one of the great breakthroughs that happened as far as you can look historically that when scoring really started to take off is when they really put that illegal contact play in, bump and run coverage was lessening the scoring around the league. So now they're going to really crack down on it and they make no bones about it. They send out a memo the other day. The reason we're doing this is we want more points scored to the National Football League. So now with devonte moving on to the Raiders with tyreek going to Miami and we're starting to see this influx of incredible town. I mean, think about the guys that are in the game these days and 6 foot three way 225 pounds and run four three 5 and all the insanity and you can't go up and play bump and run coverage against them. You're going to see some points scored and you're going to see the passing game be even bigger and more prevalent in what has been so far this year. So it's exciting times for the league and for wide receivers. So there's this need or this push to get higher scores in each of the games. Is that to generate excitement to make it more engaging for the viewer? How much of it is tied to the popularity, the growing popularity of sports betting? Well, like I always tell my kids if you don't know the answer to something and you answer money, you're going to be right 99 points. I don't know what the other one tenth of 1% might be. But yeah, it's all the above. And I don't think it's directly tied to gambling, but I think if you're gambling legally now, which we can all officially talk about at this point in time and certainly at TF athletes do a lot of talks about gambling and our new app that came out. So we're excited about that too. But yeah, I think that the overall excitement of the game and what differentiates it is are the skill positions, these great quarterbacks, the ability of the receivers to make incredible plays with these gloves that are made out of flypaper or something these days. I would have liked to have played one game with the plus on, but that's a whole other story there. But yeah, I think that we're seeing now what the fans want, clearly, are more points, more great plays, more games that end like the Kansas City buffalo game last year where whoever took the field last was going to win the football game and move on in the playoffs. So yes, that's what sells. No question about it. It's what the fans want. I want to talk about you, PFF, that because I think you just kicked it off the year before last year when we talked to you. If I got the app right, how has it been going recently? We actually, we were working on it last year when we talked. And it has just kicked off and I'm probably going to get in trouble for doing this because this is supposed to be our soft launch where they make sure nothing breaks down and they make sure that there's wrong. So I'm going to come on your show and we'll have $10 million check it out. Don't worry, I won't tell anybody, man. Okay. But yeah, it's just PFF and so now it's news, it's all the fantasy news and information you need, but more importantly, direct link to betting information and you can actually connect back to bed MGM and go make bets that you may want. "Of is what it is. The one thing that marcus freeman has done exceptionally well. This season is that by week could be negated a little bit. Because what are you scheming for. If you're cincinnati. What is what is. The schematic thing that you've seen on tape like. Oh i'm going to attack that. We can do one thing to kind of emphasize our attack on that specific area of stevens freeman really hasn't ran the same defense. In any of these games. He went three rush. Drop eight against fsu. Because last year the offense all they could do is hit the explosive and then all of a sudden floor state kind of gash them on the ground. He made some slight tweaks in the toledo game. Couple more tweaks against purdue and then last week against wisconsin. We're like he's got a completely adapt and adjusted to this wisconsin office. And i think he did that pretty well. The badgers never ran into a box. With less than six dame defenders right. There was some four by four stack being played. And so i think. When i look at this i would expect a defense that cincinnati hasn't seen yet this year but i i think the key here is cincinnati has to be able to run and force freemen to dedicate more to the box. And then you'll see desmond ritter off play action be able to strike some of those crossers some of the deep posts and if they can't run then things get a little bit. Tricky if you look at some of the metrics on paper cincinnati should be able to run their third and epa porush. Notre dame's fifty four th and epa. Porush obviously remove the f. Issue game when guys are getting acclimated to a new scheme and freemen's figuring out what is guys actually do best to put them in position to succeed. Things probably look a little bit. Different there Since the opener. I don't think freemans going to send a ton of bullets here. I'd expect the front seven to do decently against cincinnati's ground game even though again on paper you can make the case. Cincinnati shows out here. I think he's actually gonna use hamilton to play in the middle of the field. Maybe a little bit more of that linebacker role so he can spy on ritter. What's difficult for me is is notre dame's played about two good quarters of football. But i'm also not as impressed with cincinnati. I thought it would be. And so you're sitting here in a game at a virtual pick. Notre dame's won twenty six games at home straight. I believe our core number made notre dame minus one current line cincinnati about one and a half. There isn't a ton of here in the number. I think there could be a little bit of a battle going on the side as well. But i can certainly see why the fifty two did not last on the. It's so interesting when you look at this bearcats team and you talk about the leadership that desmond ritter brings. his body. language wasn't exactly the best in the win against indiana very demonstrative on the sidelines. We'll see if he can maintain a bit more of a level. Even keel in this and you talk about the bearcats weapons or lack thereof on a major level. Jerome ford is running the ball out of the backfield and clearly. They're belco but you look at their receiver group. I mean nobody on. This team has more than nine catches on the early season. And it's not as though cincinnati needed to show a ton in a dominant win against miami of ohio. They did after race early deficit against murray state. But you figure you were going to get the ball to your playmakers by hooker by crook in the win against indiana. They were able to separate themselves. Mainly because the defense force a couple of turnovers and held indiana short on downs but should be one hell of a game. And i know pain. So many people talking about cincinnati This is the biggest game in school history. 'cause if they win they would control their own destiny into the college football playoff before we get to that point. Let's pump the brakes and see if they can go into hostile territory and knock off an irish team that i think a lot of people discounted before the season and a win here. Suddenly we're talking about notre dame exceeding early season expectations roaming. This is the biggest game for them though. I mean for the irish you kind of note for cincinnati. Oh for sure. I mean you go down the list of who they've played in some of the meaningful games and i don't think there's a combination of program that they've faced in the upper echelon where it means so much to the potential future and there is some interesting elements here. We kind of talked about that. Familiarity brian kelly was at cincinnati yet in the late. Two thousand eight two thousand nine. I think was his last year there. Any obviously plucks defensive coordinator. Marcus freeman from the bearcats. This past off season and then freeman took. Mike mickens the db coach with them. And you can't fault freeman for going to a larger program. That's probably paying him a three acts but there is some bad blood here and i know you do as much reading as i do. But some of the bearcats players have come out and ben. Oh it personally opened this week. Yeah i mean to sean pace flat out said this week. I don't think it'll be weird going coach freeman. I just think you shouldn't have left. So now we gotta go out there and show them. Why shouldn't have left so there is some bad blood here. It wasn't all pots of golden rainbows on the way out for marcus freeman. You like a little bit of that side story going into a game. That's going to have Meaningful ramifications for both these programs when you look at the upcoming schedules that both of these teams will face should be one hell of a game. Two thirty eastern coming to you from south bend. Paint a pair of undefeated teams in the big twelve will do battle under the lights in stillwater. Where oklahoma state plays host to the baylor bears oklahoma state a three and a half point favorite fan duel sportsbook total in this game forty seven and a half down a shade from where it opened. When you look at oklahoma state they won the meeting between these two teams forty two to three a season ago. State hasn't started five. Since two thousand fifteen back then will. They actually started the campaign teno. Meanwhile you look at what baylor has been able to do. I think one of the bigger surprises. So far this season upsetting iowa state last week. But anyone who digs into the box score there sees the bears were relatively fortunate and opportunistic for a lack of a better term but one of the bigger surprises and questions you had about coming into the year was what this offense was going to look like. Bohannon has been a pleasant surprise against the slate of inferior opponents up until the win against iowa state but now going into hostile territory against the defense. That's been downright nasty allowing a grand total of seven points in the second. Half of wins against boise state. Two weeks ago on the road and last week against kansas state in their own building. That's the key..

Where you can leave your questions there. And then of course you can call text nine four nine by four to six two four one email. The ob insider gmail.com no excuses. Ichard get your questions in Let's let's see here. There was one you want. You want to start with the one on the comment threat on since jungled. Did you see that one from perfectionist. I did that one. So perfectionist is asking if the three safety sets on defense is question right now. Do you know who may have been taking snaps in camp in those three safety sets. I'm pretty sure ricardo allen missed. Timing camp was during the use of dairy spills opposite of bates might make sense with irwin. Call up so we talked about this on the weekly show ricardo allen. In case you haven't heard is on injured reserve at the moment. He's on there with a broken hand and hamstring uh spring. He played twenty one snaps against the minnesota. Vikings in week one in he was out there with along with bates in bonn bell in some of the defensive looks and we kinda talked about this earlier in the week this could be assigned that trayvon henderson gets called up to the active roster. Take his spot they signed. Sean davis on the practice squad as well to fill out some depth but the question really is anthony. Do they continue to institute. Some of these looks just with another guy in henderson. Or maybe davis or they just kind of resort back to the defensively last year whereas this mainly just bates bell field. For one hundred seven snaps. I may have missed it. did they. Bring davis up from is us on the practice squad right. I think he's still just on the practice squad they they won't elevate guys until i think tomorrow right so Yeah it'll be interesting to see if davis gets the call up because you know new guy coming right in like in the middle of the early middle in throw him into this role that was just specifically pegged for ricardo allen. He played pretty well. He had a good. Pf score last week. So i think the davis would be the candidate to do it. I just don't know if it's going to be this week. Maybe it will be next week. Once he gets kind of a little more acclimated to things going forward So that that would be my guy that i would think would do that. In the interim hopefully re You know the the stint on. I r is not going to be a long one there but you know i. I don't i don't know really what they're gonna do here. I mean someone had asked you know dairy phillips You know a guy that can be in that mix. I don't think so. I think it's yeah that that's just not his style of play in so you know it just may be a little bit more to safety sets and they just make you know maybe. They tried out an extra linebacker than they did in week. One in the bottom line is here. What's going to make this not be an issue is if the defensive line keeps playing at a pretty high level or a very high level. Because that's gonna that's gonna help you know alleviate some of the pressure on the safeties in the back end of the defensive able to get after the quarterback but as of now i hope ricardo allen is not on. I are very long.

Hook up with the indiana hoosiers on saturday at noon in bloomington. The game is live on and one or two seven w. bien dan hoard. Jim kelly have the call. Jim is with us now. It's so good to have you. Let's talk about the first two games before we look ahead They've played well. They haven't played great. They certainly haven't played a full sixty minutes in either of the two games. The goods outweigh the bed. What have you seen from. Uc that you like the most like the most. I think what i what. I'm very pleased to watching the offensive line number. One of the miami gaming outstanding there were spectacular number two. They didn't get off to a great start as did any part of the barricade whether it was offense defense special teams in the state game but they really in the second half took over. that game. So i i you know i was one of the points that are one of the areas that we were a little bit worried about preseason but the offensive lines with very good and i think in the first two games. They've been shining point. There's a lot of other places. I think where there's been a lot of positive Positive things as well. The running game Is is part of that which includes jerome ford. And of course doesn't ritter but i think you have to give credit to the offensive line. What has to be fixed in time for saturday. Yeah that's a good question. Who certainly getting off to a little bit faster. Start not a little bit faster star. They faster start than they did against. Murray state is mandatory. You can't they merced. They came in. They knew what they wanted to do. They were methodical about it. They took about twenty. I'm sorry about thirty five seconds off of each forty second play clock they were going to keep cincinnati offense off the field and they were successful at it. Not that indiana's gonna do that. But if indiana they're gonna they're gonna run their offense but if they're able to move the ball up and down. The field in cincinnati goes three and out like they did on their first series against murray state. I think they're going to be in trouble 'cause it's not a team you're gonna score thirty five points in the second half against them you know to come back so i think they need to get off to a faster. Start not worry if indiana scores on them fairly quickly. Because there's a lot of weapons on this. I you offense And have faith in your offense that you're going to be able to football. I really do look the For cincinnati to throw the ball a little bit more in to get guys like michael yon and You know a couple of the other receivers that are involved. It get involved a little bit more alec. Here's tight ends have been even though too tight. End scott touchdown passes last week against state. We didn't see a whole lot of leonard taylor. We didn't see a whole lot of the josh wiley. Either in those games and that game which as we did in the first game. So i think at the passing game gone on the running game strong right now but getting the short passing game in particular i think is gonna really eight things and that will open up. Something deep in south by scott can be a threat the we know alec peers can be. No michael young can be as well trade tucker as well so i think we need to see. The offense have more consistent drives be able to kind of spread it around in the passing game and then continue to do what they've done on the ground which is run. The ball very nicely. I thought to a degree on defense. They got pushed around a little bit by murray state. Which is now. Would you expect when you play an opponent that said. I'm still not really sure. And i don't think i was going to get this answer against miami murray state. I'm still not really sure. How teams are going to score consistently a move the ball consistently against these guys know. That's a good question Murray state exploited kind of the the quick slant route which they caught the linebackers on the inside still in the corners around the backside and even though they played very very good man coverage if the boss thrown properly. You're going to complete that that slammed pass. It may only be for seven yards and six yards or able to break tackle. Maybe eight or ten but More state knew what they could do and they were able to do it. Indiana's gonna look at those that film and they're gonna say well we can do something like this. Let's do something to keep these linebackers. And and then we can get a very talented group of wide receivers. One on one now as i go through the ac stats The american stats and kind of look at the two games combined. Cincinnati in pass defenses leading everybody and in all categories in passing pet bass efficiency defense past defense and then they are really up there as far as rush. Defense pat in As well as scoring defense as well so defense has played really really well. I don't think they've been tested You know like they're going to be tested this week and they and they played very well but at the same time i think as each passing week goes by each previous game becomes a tape that the next opponent can see people are going to figure out ways to exploit a little bit and You know at the same time. They're going to be hard to score on. No i would agree. Gimme an idea of what you've seen through two games from desmond ridder Very efficient No question about it. You could tell that he's You know really thinking about and have to think as much about what he's doing but he's everything that he's gone through in the past two seasons in particular even the third season richard freshman year He's learned from you. Know the one interception that he does have this year he was trying to make too much happened. And i've seen him in other situations where in the past. He tried to force the ball into double coverage for the situation. Maybe it wasn't double coverage but it was a situation where add things can happen and he stayed away from that so i think he's really grown up You know we haven't seen a lot of running out of him this year. Yes he's had a few sacks with cuts him down as far as his total rushing yardage but at the same time he really hasn't taken off and run the ball like particularly like we saw him do last year and the year before. But i think in the passing side of things He's done a really really nice job. He throws the ball deep well. That was the area that i know everybody wanted to see improve on. I believe he has The other thing that i liked particularly in the miami game in the first half and then tonight at the beginning of the fourth quarter little short passing game that they were able to complete maybe six in a row on when they were struggling in the third quarter against miami right at the beginning of the fourth they got that short passing game up and going again and they moved the ball down.

"If you believe that this is just a blip on the radar. It's something that happens during the course of here if this is taking place in june no one's making a big deal about it you're going to defer to the fact that some of these guys have had good seasons already then. You probably think that this team is going to be okay over the next three and a half weeks. I'm sort of somewhere in the middle and not not to cop out. But that's that's sort of somewhere in the middle and i leaned towards thinking that this team between now and the end of the season offensively will wake up and i say that frankly and i shouldn't do this more from my heart than my head because watching him against lefties has been painful and seeing some of these guys dry up offensively after performing well for long stretches has been very damaging to these teams. In addition to the cardinals beating the reds and sending the reds to their third consecutive loss we have a lot of ground cover with them and a little bit later on at five twenty. "Are i love this thing up. Why don't we all right. It's time to talk about the top. Three tiers of college. Football teams in the mix. If you think they should be. Because i'm not gonna lie this tier right here may surprise some people so your team might have made it if you think it was better than all those teams. You ain't heard or lease in the mix with all those teams and you haven't heard it all right. Let's get into it this tier. This tier is first time hopefuls to win a championship. first-time hopefuls. those three teams that are in this tier. I will stay. Cyclones north carolina tar heels. Cincinnati bearcats. We can talk about cincinnati. Couple times here. They are in the top three tiers. Any power five team with the legitimate chance to win is conference should be considered a playoff contender in both iowa. State and north carolina are talented. Well coached teams with additional opportunity against What should be top twenty five nine conference opponents. The question is whether they can win those games. Iowa state faces rival. I was september eleventh and a win over. The hawk is could help iowa state edge out another contender for a semi-final spot. It decide cones go one in one against oklahoma Losing either during the regular season or in the big twelve title game North carolina. October thirtieth trip to notre dame could have a similar impact for the tar heels giving them a cushion if their only loss is in a close wine to clemson in the acc championship game. Okay of course. They got play clemson in the conference. Not going to be the easiest walking apart. But that's what the guy do is not unreasonable to think that the selection committee might consider both teams in the circumstance if clemson beats georgia but the tar heels needs to make the most of that opportunity against the irish though because wins against non conference opponents. Georgia state in wolfert won't help their playoff case. That just that's going to be like. Who are these guys. This which wants to work with not respect. George state or wolfert without the notre dame window. They'd have to win the acc for serious consideration which that means they would have to be glimpsing which. I don't know if anybody's putting their money on. I'm not. I need my money okay. I can't just be thought it away like that. Cincinnati has no margin for error but in undefeated season against the schedule. That includes back to back. Trips to indiana and notre dame would give the bearcats a resume comparable to those of other playoff contenders. You basically have to respect them. All the way like dane did that last year. They did this this year. We gotta start talking about this team. They're gonna start getting better You know recruits They're going to be able to start competing with the issues in the area. Okay So i mean that's that's just going to happen according to espn fbi. Cincinnati is the clear favourite with forty seven percent to win the american athletic conference again. Okay so he's still got that chance but will they do. I mean they have a pretty solid team returning But you know. Like i said it's not the easiest schedule Cincinnati they're ranked number eight. Okay and like. I said that a lot of that been there in the top. Ten helps a lot after what they did last season so they opened up at miami ohio then play Murray they play ranked seventeen Indiana and then go to notre dame who's rank top ten number nine play temple. Ucf navy tulane us f. sme u. e. c. you so they really got worried about their first couple of games a really those go feel like they don't have too many problems on the end although sleep on. Smu day usually little sneaky out their shots and my main court now gene up there. So maybe i'll start. Get some insights for you guys in order to share a little bit on what's going on with that organization especially if they're doing i'm definitely getting the t. If they're doing well we're we're gonna we're gonna have some updates for you guys that Tune into me for sure all right so yeah cincinnati. We'll see if last year was a fluke. Our just a really lucky year or if they going really bring it okay next tier up next year might make me tear up because we're talking about tier to these teams are the two that are the ones that people are expecting outside of the top. Ford possibly make it to the playoffs. But there's only one way that they can get there and it's in the name of the tier. This tier is candy. Beat bama yes these. Sec teams are. They take in order to be in the playoffs. They just have to beat one team. They beat that one team than their Guaranteed a playoff spot. Those who teams georgia bulldogs who are favored to win. Their division of the sec has played behrman sec championship and the team that shares the same side of the conference with obama texas in the mix struggled with him last year but they put up a good fight. Alabama isn't the only team in sec worthy of top for consideration but it is blocking the path to the national championship. The aggies have lost eight straits. Tie consider this in. Texas was past nineteen games. It's own into against obama and fifteen into against.

"I mean yes. You're still worried about the playoffs. But it's not that dire unless you're talking sixteen seventeen like you need a game to win. And what have you so definitely. I think it is something that can be pretty good for the communities. I think you know there's not this whole we gotta go ten and and you know hope that we have enough computer points that type of thing. I mean you still want the playoffs. Of course who doesn't but now there's more chances to play against tougher teams too bad. That team in columbus won't go for that so there is one more question. And it's from our good friend. Lou game lynn real captain lou on twitter. Also part of the twelve ounce sports family and this is about the cincinnati bearcats. What do you think of the bearcats ranking and are they going to do as good as last year. I think yes do as good as last year. I do worry about you. Know some of the pieces that dropped off but yeah luke. Fickle has built up a very respectable. Uc bearcats program. I mean night and day. Difference between tommy tucker ville who's now in the senate in alabama no political statement after that. I promise but. I think what. I think you think what you think their now. We agree on something. But i mean the resolve. Pickles had mean just outstanding i think. Acc title or bust. Goodness yes i know. Ucf is good. Yes or no houston is good. I know that. "Here's the bearcats ranked twenty second and he became the latest cincinnati. Sports twitter villain. You know we love having on our show. Cincinnati sports twitter villains the bearcats on his ballot ranked twenty second for what it's worth. You did have ohio state. Fourth and so twitter just wales away at the guy much like they did paul dougherty and so okay. Let's get on our guy nathan. So he's with us now. He is on twitter at n. W baird it is good to have you. What does the meanest thing that anybody from. Cincinnati has called you since yesterday afternoon that you could actually say on the air that i can say on the radio. You know. most of them aren't too nasty. Obviously there's plenty of people who I should just quit my job Which certainly there days. We all think about that. But mostly i listen. I understand it like it. If it's part of this business like this is the way you deal with the to like the emotional attachment. That people have to their sports teams. it's what both like gives us a living and also Win we don't agree with them. It's when we hear from them. And i'm fine with that. That's what part of this is that. The poll at the end of the day really is It's closer to a conversation piece Then it is a an actual final judgment on something. You know what i mean. 'cause fortunately now we take care of that on the field So i i understand. I appreciate their their feedback and hopefully they stick with it and weakened if if four weeks from now or or two months and now guess it'll be cincinnati is still undefeated. I'm raising them up my list. They can Tell me to eat crow or whatever they'll tell you to eat be whatever. Yes what and look your your colleagues who voted have them rank tired their eighth in the preseason top twenty five poll. What do you not see from cincinnati. That many of your colleagues do yeah. I think one important thing. I want to point out is one of the things i did hear from a lot of. Probably your readers other people on twitter with you had them number eight last year. Why are they number. Twenty two now. And what. I've tried to claim to people is. It's completely i. I didn't look at my poll from last year. Certainly what the final poll was last year. I really tried to assess it. Based on what i think. Teams are this year. I thought that was especially important this year because last year was just so messed up like it's very hard to make some judgments about what teams really were last year. Because of everything was happening with cova may also be true of synthetic because obviously they had their own outbreak. They had a games. That were compromise More cancel because of this. "Names molitor tony. Pike returns in about twenty minutes with a recap of today's bengals training camp activities. And don't forget he. And i have cincy three sixty for an hour tomorrow at known. You know we've done these training camp reports from paul brown stadium every single day and which is great. It's informative it's insightful. It's happening in real time. Meanwhile in in in west harrison indiana the uc bearcats have been going through camp since late last week at camp higher ground. And i thought you know what let's let's get a essentially a training camp update from there as the bearcats inch closer to their season opener on september the fourth and so i thought we spend a few minutes today. With our buddy chad brendel bearcat journal dot com. Who has been there. Pretty much nonstop. How you been good. I mean i'm available every day for camp reports. You are yes. Nobody sold it. So that's right. Yes maybe maybe next year. Thus far what has been the theme of camp higher ground I think things surprisingly have been very balanced like i mentally. I guess i went into this camp expecting the defense to pretty much dominate. Because they're they're that good and the offense has had some fight and it's been in large part because of the play of both designator devon prater and the emergence of this. You know last year. One of the main storylines was completely revamping and re hauling this wide receiver room. And i think now we're really starting to see the fruits of those labor's Because a guy like tyler scott makes big plays every day and you're getting a lot more A lot more variety in guys that are able to To to make a play against this defense. So i think that has been kinda the overriding theme for me is. It hasn't been a camp that you know. We heard bengals camp in the defense dominating and the the age old cliche. The defense is always ahead of the offense at the start of camp. This offense came out with something to prove and it's it's been pretty impressive to see them be able to move the ball like the half. What what can this offense within the context of that. What is this offense going to be able to do this year that it couldn't do last year. Hopefully if what we're seeing is not a mirage. I it's it's big playability. you know. I think for the even as successful as this team has been the past three years but it's been a grinded out kind of offense now they they Get more damage on the scoreboard last year. But there weren't a lot of splash plays and you're looking at especially not just in the passing game. But you've got a guy jerome ford that i don't know they've had a home. Run hitter like jerome ford since isaiah pede. So you've got the ability to make big plays in the ground game. You've got an emerging wide receiver group. And then you also have josh. Wiley and leonard taylor. Making plays tight end. I think that's the the big difference that we'll see for this team. This year is not so much Third and seven but a lot of first intends because there were there were big plays on first and second down. I know you're a fan of You know second ten runs Hopefully there won't be many of those don't even. I don't even wanna start thinking about that in august like watching does ritter this year with with the experience. He has under his belt with the accolades that he is achieved with the off season training that he's gone through and with the expectations that he's managing. I think the biggest change. I've seen with dez is he's a lot more demanding a lot more vocal. A lot more you know i. It doesn't come off as you know a jerk but you mess up he. He's he's going to let you know and he's going to let you know how he wanted corrected and you see a lot of you know if he's timing with receivers off though they'll meet you know when the second team comes on the first team comes off they'll go over and talk about what he wants and what he's expecting which tells me he's he's taking that next step in his progression where he knows right. I mean he knows what a mistake was. What what he needs to do to it. What if if the receiver was off on a row. What needs to be done. That side of it has been has been really impressive to watch. And then like i said is a struggle here has been completing. Those plays fifteen yards or more down the field but has not been a problem so far campfire ground. Those plays are being completed with regularity. I think i had one day where they were up over. Through the course of a practice they were north of ten and inching towards fifteen plays of twenty five yards or more with this defense. If you get an offense and all of a sudden can be explosive on top of it. We're going to be in for a funnier. Evan prater if they have to put him in the game can they. Can the offense still function. yes you know. Obviously you're losing a lot Experience and and you know the the things that does knows now that he didn't know for years ago but if you would ask and then i think he did ask me that question at the end of the spring and the answer was boy I don't feel great about it What i would say right now. Is i think from what i've seen and we're all weekend so i don't wanna over. Overstate it but evan. Prater is farther along in his development right now than desmond. Ritter was three weeks before he stepped on the field and the rose bowl so if they can find a way to win. Eleven games with that desmond writer. I think that this is a better team than that team was. You could find a way to to to get through a rough patch devon prater if necessary right now He is. He's worked on his mechanics. That's something and gino spent a lot of time on Going through that process this summer and he is throwing the ball much much better than he has The first year plus that he was here. What's what has stood out just aside from the overall quality the unit. What has stood out as you've watched the defense practice. I don't know how anyone blocks my jay sanders legit. Don't i mean you were there for a day. You got to see it a little bit. He and most of his moves this was he had a breathtaking one today. Most of his moves are speed generated. Right speed rush the spin. Move back inside. Its quickness it speed. He john williams with the bull rush today that he hit him so quick and so hard and his chest that john williams arms were rendered useless. Just kind of dangling there as my jay took him to the quarterback and justin williams are standing there next day just standing there next to each other kind of looked at each other and went. I didn't know you could do that like if he starts doing that. To go with the speed stuff oh boy He's gonna be. He's gonna be a big time. Big time weapon And then the death that's developing At so many different spots that that is really fun. Like i said the last time. I talked to you and you saw this as well. There's two there's two teams right now. There's this large group of veterans. That are kind of in their swansong being cincinnati bearcats. And then there's these last two recruiting classes that are the two best recruiting classes in program. History that are just bubbling to get on the field and it's been kind of a fascinating dynamic to watch especially on the defense is the biggest question about.

Usa to the big east and instant not instantly but almost instantly. They were a contender. So i don't think it would be that much different either in the clemson obviously is the the big elephant in the in the acc. But tell me within three four years you see couldn't compete with every other team in the right now or another. Absolutely and another benefit was uc. Wouldn't have all these coaches were stepping. Stones going to bigger universities like you know exactly and the more money better stadium that they can get not that. "bearcats" Discussed on The Cincinnati and Dayton Sports Podcast

"See how the bearcats bounce back next year. There was a game. I was listening to Bearcats oh what was that game. I'm going to be angry Jeremiah davenport who was originally going to go to wright state now and you see he had himself a game. And i'm trying to think what that game was. Let's look at us bio and find out. He's a molar crusader. And let's look at his stats. That might help wasn't georgia though. That's a season high of eighteen is mid high was twenty eight against tulsa which. I think he'll be heavily. Leaned upon he had fourteen point. It wants the tennessee game. That's right because it was so close in the bearcats trie lead for time and then gave up the game late to the volunteers but the volunteers there are they in the top ten sale. I probably should know the rankings. But i don't so there you go. Let's see a along of local talent. There's a former summit country day silver night and san martin. There's a mullah crusader mentioned jeremiah davenport. But kind of a night and day difference. Basketball's good down here. And since dayton to and there's only one cincinnati on the uc squad which to excuse me which. I know that doesn't signal you know it's you know it's a better year if you've got more cincinnati daytona and what have you but you don't want it mean it's a night and day difference where the bearcats roster looks different than the football one and yes i know. There's more spots to fill in football compared to basketball. You don't need to lecture me on that but yes it's a rough year for the men's basketball side for the women's basketball side. It's a bright new day with uconn going to the big east and the women's bearcats are two in six and one in three in conference play so another rough year. It's rough year for both bearcat who've squads and twenty twenty twenty one and they're coming off a loss of hold against tulsa sixty to fifty seven. They will be back at home. The bearcats will saturday the ninth at two against two lane and for the women's bearcats seven home games remain except no six home games. Remain wanna get us some. You was canceled because smu had to cancel the season. Which that's that sucks full. Stop that really sucks. And but i. I'm not saying the decision thoughts. I'm saying having to cancel season sucks so now we move across the way. We talk about xavier basketball. Men's team having a good year although to start off biggies play the not so hot although the musketeers. Actually i beg your pardon one into because i thought it was oh in two and then two straight wins. I got my things max up. sorry fans the musketeers. Nine and two on the year two and two in play an eight and one at home sweet cintos mentioned about the crosstown shootout with cincinnati and that was still great game played in big east. Play the musketeers. Have a home win actually to homelands of the big east against marquette ninety one eighty eight. It just beating saint john's last night. Sixty nine sixty one. One home loss was the seton hall as the pirates. Wanted eighty-five sixty eight and one road loss. In conference play for the mousketeers. They fell at number thirteen creighton. Sixty six sixty one by the way. Crayton's in omaha nebraska. In case you wondered there's not like creighton ville or something like that. so what is next for the musketeers..

"Com. Looking for a part time job. Apply it jobs dot dominos dot com Go Bearcats. This'll is news radio 700 wlw. 3.5 minutes ago, Cincinnati tied the game and 44 a three point basket by Jeremiah Davenport. It erased a 12 point deficit. In the 3.5 minutes since Tulsa has scored seven unanswered points in the bear Cats have missed every shot they put up. And I am one. I'm a UC alumni. My You see homework to a certain extent, but I've never been one to mince my words when it comes to speaking the truth about what I see on the floor in the product right now is bad. Because Everybody's out for themselves. Nobody's penetrating kick. In addition to every people, nobody is setting the table for somebody else to be successful. Everybody wants to be the one to make the big shot, make the big play, and in the meantime, they're not making everybody else look good. Chris Boat is struggling, aren't there so when he goes to help, he helps you on your man, but nobody goes to help him. So it makes him look bad when he goes to helping to give up easy dunks. There's no weeks I rebounding. There's not guys that are looking to make plays their penetrating baseline. Instead of trying to draw and tickets to the guy in the middle, who circles in the middle. They try to shoot floaters that go from behind the backboard for some incredible reverse layup hits the bottom of the room. Sorry. Easton is in for Cincinnati. Bear Cats trailed by seven Plenty of time left 11 minutes 10 seconds to go. Tulsa has it in the front court. Joiner has been very sure where the ball they get it down low for Jackson. His pass deflected It goes right to Tulsa and Edo, who puts it up again. Break right there Time for Cincinnati. 53 44 9 straight for Tulsa. Cats have the ball. Here's Harvey passing from Mike Adams would down low for both seals off his defender and a foul is called on Tulsa. Dan a post pass Now it may seem like him. Early signing day: Latest on the nation's top 25 college football recruits

"It's signing day part one in college football with the early signing period. now which. I'm sure coaches love because they championship games and bowl games. All that other stuff. It is obviously been a very busy time for the uc coaching staff. And a big reason why is putting together a twenty three players signing class or recruiting class. I should say for the the class of two thousand and twenty one during the early signing period we are obviously huge fans of bear journal. Dot com chad. Brendel comes on this show all the time. He'll be with us tomorrow at three forty five but because it is sunday i wanted to bring in brent young who also covers. Uc's sports and pretty heavy recruiting emphasis for bearcat journal dot com. He is on twitter at. Excuse me at be young sports and He's with us this afternoon. I appreciate the time. What should i what what stands out most about this. This particular group of players the bearcats have inked You know what really stands out to me. The most i often travel on. It's just kind of the debt that that numerous positions the the high level of talent. It might not have the the top players like you know. You have last year with with prater and jean thomas and jane thompson. The four stars really really kind of flooding the top of the list. But what was really shown and this one is just the death and the amount of talent that they're able to bring in not really clear that you would expect kind of just be headliners for each class but just the amount of players that are highly rated at each physician. You're going to have numerous players. They're going to have big impact next year special teams but more further down the line right. Give me one or two players. That if i look at this bunch and i'm trying to find a kid who's gonna make an immediate impact year one or two stands out. You don't have to go with i. Brian threats i think first off. He's one of the seven early enroll. East coming in is going to be a player out of you. Know w kaufmann there and the clubs. They're gonna come in and be a player that wants to get on the field no matter what so. You're going to see him on special teams quite a lot. You're going to see him trying really find his role on the defensive side. You know obviously defense is going to have a humorous players that are going to have to be funneled out and figured out who's going to be replacing all the seniors that are currently on the roster. So yeah i think threats comes in. He has a knack for the ball defensively. He has the ability to make big plays. You know you play offense as well as the high school level but really defensively special teams where. I'm expecting him to kind of have almost an immediate impact and then outside of that You know give me. Give me an office alive because it seems. Recently we have causes there possibly had numerous true freshman. Kind break that that that you know. Talk to on the depth chart. And i think that you look at a player like luke collins where who could step in at the tackle position is one of the better fruits that program history for the bearcats. And i think he's gonna have a chance to really kinda shy know now. Land is gonna have a chance to really shine but and then of course you look at the depth as i've constantly mentioned it's going to be hard for some of these players really crack the rotation because now you see we've been able to turn you know one as one bs and constant we have players available at each position. So really specialties. Would be the place to watch out for. Maybe i'd a toxic to watch out for who could have an impact on kickoff teams kickoff return team things of that sort. There are seven kids from the greater cincinnati area around up the kids from from From from from this class from the greater cincinnati area. yeah. I talked about Gmc defensive player of the year. It of seems like that's been that the bearcats have been able to do is bring in big time defensive players from the great cincinnati area and that first off. He has a fantastic a phenomenal nickname. And it's the godfather dante. I mean better. Carry that with him and he'd better have it all the way throughout his playing career. Whether it is in the nfl anywhere he goes. Dante corleones the godfather of course from rain high school. He's going to be a cog in the middle. You shake his hand and he just completely engulfs your hand. It makes you feel small just a bowling ball of a player. And he kinda of exact situation as i say of the death i mean. He's he's the second lowest rated player in this entire recruiting class. But you've accused. Gmc defensive player of the year. you get sacks. he's going to be a big shopper. Upfront i mean forced. You gotta mentioned the land fickle. That really great story about him is is of course he. He sat down at the dinner table with his father. And he said you know data. I think i'm gonna be a bearcat and and we've said no. I don't accept that i need a little bit more. You know force behind that. And that's you know he said okay came back days later and i'm sure he fought as much force as possible and You know land is going to be a player. That i think is surprised. Because he's got the talent that his dad has of leeward hours another great flare out of princeton. I mean you just keep on going up and down the list and then of course you know you got ice. Jarman is a good outside player. And i already talked about mouth glenn. This is just going to be another one of those. The state of cincinnati is what they call it and and keeping hometown heroes around the greater cincinnati area. They're all gonna big impact on the team. All right look. I'm not gonna ask you to be an expert on every recruiting class in the country but there are folks at twenty. Four seven are relentless. Put this class up against other competitors in the put this class up against their competitors among a group of five schools. And then tell me where would stack up or how would stack up to even some of the schools that we frequently talk about them. Trying to recruit among power five schools. Right you know first off forty second in the country. You might know that at that and think okay. That seems like a high number but you break it down. This is pop. G five recruiting class top class in the afc. You know an average of eighty five point one that is second behind what last year. The eighty five point three Just just the amount of average ratings throughout the entire class you know the groups that break higher than what auburn has brought in this year. What virginia tech has brought in what you know an iowa state who is magically better than the bearcats in the college football playoff hole which. I'm sure you've completely broke down but higher than in iowa state hires than a ucla arizona state tcu. So you know there was about twenty power five twenty to twenty five power. Five software says up bearcats actually had a higher national rank. Nance so you're looking at you. Know one of the best britain the best group of five but one of the better entire classes and the and the nation he look at next year. Obviously a really early start but this is a fantastic roof. And they're going to be you know like i said it's going to be a couple years down the line. You're gonna start calling out these players by name and say wow. This is a big time player from that twenty. Twenty one
